Well, I have two, actually:

http://www.sugarpants.net/archives/Pumpkin%20Head.jpg

http://www.sugarpants.net/archives/redhead.jpg

The first is of Drake Beardo and our robot jack-o-lantern. The other is me. It is a glorious picture of the back of my head. I just like them because they happened to turn out better than I expected them to.

Share your personal favorites from your personal collection. I LIKE PICTURE THREADS.

obv you mean from behind the lens?

LaToya JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

I have better candidates in pictures I've taken on disposable cameras from my 2002 U.S. road trip...

but here are two series of pics that I think contain some of the best ones I've taken..

Graffiti in Reykjavík, Iceland Interior, and the party pics in the London link -- respectively.

The Tracer/Gareth pic may be the best of all of them...

The Tracer/Gareth pic may be the best of all of them...

I must agree. :-)

I hope to finally get a digital camera later this year. Of the pictures I've taken in my life, I like quite a few but none ever have truly captured the moment as it stood.

I don't know what the best is. I like this one, though:

Maybe you are Gareth and you stare quizzically at pay phones.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

RJG's body language in Cathy's photo is utterly brilliant.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

I really like RJG's ear in my picture, and how he looks jaunty and the green hatted child and woman poking herself in the eye just ignore him. My favourite photo on this thread is Douglas', by a mile.

Grth what camera do you have that produces that grainy effect?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 24 February 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

kate, what is the story behind that photo? very cool.

sugarpants (sugarpants), Thursday, 24 February 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

Grainy? I dunno. I took it at the highest res. so maybe resizing it and changing the res affected it somehow, unless you're talking about the background which is Tulle and gives the appearance of being grainy when it's really just the grain of the material.

kate/papa november (papa november), Thursday, 24 February 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm....the story. None really. I'm still working on making up that part.

Last Sat I got myself a model and shot off all my ideas I haven't been able to realise without one :)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 24 February 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

http://www.memorygongs.com/davemccomb.jpg

I am very proud of this photo, of Dave McComb fronting the Triffids at a gig in 1989 (I think). I was holding the camera above my head all gig, and only a few shots worked but this one worked beautifully.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 24 February 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

Wow, thats really cool with the cold coloured background and hard warm light on his face!

kate/papa november (papa november), Thursday, 24 February 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the contrast btwn the slide projection and his face lit a diff colour, thats totally why it works, its fab. Sometimes I miss taking proper 35mm SLR photos.

And whats the story behind the third one?

LaToya JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 24 February 2005 02:52 (twenty years ago)

so many good ones but Curious George's is my favourite just ahead of Gareth's carousel pic which is fab too.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 24 February 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

I still like this picture, partly because I think it turned out really well, but mostly because I took this backwards over my shoulder, really quickly without looking, and didn't expect it to be anything but a blurry shot of something like the sidewalk:

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 24 February 2005 02:55 (twenty years ago)

That first one is amazing, where was it taken?

In a strange inflatable art installation thing in dulwich last summer.

And whats the story behind the third one?

It's The Angel of the North, an Anthony Gormley sculpture just outside Newcastle. The shot was a quick snap from the window of a moving car, which just happened to turn out well.

put on some clothes, dude. this isn't the underwear thread!

Heh, the nakedness is illusory. :)

Ooh, I LOVE that wing mirror shot.

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 24 February 2005 02:55 (twenty years ago)

That shot means a lot to me, because I was taking photojournalism at the time, and developed the film and made the print as well. I left the scan in RGB so you could see the spots where I didn't fix it perfectly. I shot it 20 years ago this summer.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 24 February 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I noticed that. It's nice to see a hand-developed shot.

kate/papa november (papa november), Thursday, 24 February 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

It's beautiful. It makes me want to buy a proper camera and actually get good at this stuff, rather than just occasionally lucky.

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 24 February 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

JimD, I'm a big fan of SEEING EVERYTHING, but that last one you posted is unbearably sexy. (Even with you in it.)

When I first got my camera, I thought about doing a series of side-mirror and rearview-mirror shots. Why didn't I? Speaking of lucky, I was steering with my knees, going over a blind hill.

Wow, thats the best shot i've seen of the gates since they opened.

kate/papa november (papa november), Thursday, 24 February 2005 03:07 (twenty years ago)

Yeah Rock thats a fantastic shot :)

I used to do B&W photos and hand-develop my negs and my prints, but all that equipment is at my parents place and the enlarger is so old and clunky (its from the 70s I think) that I dont think it is worth trying to bring interstate. Besides which I've nowhere practical in a small flat to use as a darkroom.

this is the best picture I've taken lately, I'm under no illusions as to my talent wrt photography. I have to tell you the story behind it though, recently this beautiful old abandoned building a block away from me was torn down to make room for a damn parking garage and it was a big huge traumatic deal for everyone involved. And the destruction is done now, no more trying to sleep through the wrecking ball and seeing the building come down bit by bit. But I walked by and saw that the weight and motion of the crane wielding the wrecking ball had torn up the asphalt on the street, exposing the old brick surface and the streetcar tracks, and it was lovely somehow.

The mist/fog is actually a sculpture itself, would you believe. This is the sculpture garden at the Australian National Gallery in Canberra - the wooden (actually bronze) boatthingy in water, the mist and the henry moore are all sculptures... it makes for some amazing picutres when the fog is "on".

Sven Bastard (blueski), Thursday, 24 February 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

Sadly, the best photo I have ever taken is no longer in my possession. It was of my wife on a crumbling stone wall at the Alhambra in Granada, with that making a nice frame for the backdrop of rocky hills and trees. I think she took it with her when we separated. I've only taken a handful as an adult, oddly.

the other kate (ffs!) (papa november), Friday, 25 February 2005 07:35 (twenty years ago)

kate, i too am a fan of your photos. they always stood out in the "what do you look like" threads. they've got a really Lachapelle character about them, and i've been really into his stuff lately

LaToya JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 25 February 2005 07:46 (twenty years ago)

Ooooo thanks! I'm fairly new to studio type photography but I like making things larger than life, a little over the top. It's my inner drag queen trying to bust out I think.

the other kate (ffs!) (papa november), Friday, 25 February 2005 08:06 (twenty years ago)

i really miss taking pictures. i was partially employed for a few years during the dot com bomb and i spent my free time in city college taking classes and walking the city taking pix. i even considered getting into photo as a profession, but starting as a 10$/hr intern didn't sound to appealing.

kate, what did you do to make the first model so smooth? is it makeup/lighting or was there some photoshop/post processing involved?

LaToya JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 25 February 2005 08:17 (twenty years ago)

First one?

Hmmm....i can post the original for you, I think that might make it easier to explain.

http://www.eyecandyforthebrokenhearted.com/leonieclean.jpg

so anyhow, that should give you a better idea of what I changed, I put more highlights down her face, deleted her mole, airbrushed the background so it was all pink, put more highlights on the roses and lightened the whites of her eyes and her teeth.

I used to feel bad about digitally altering my work, but now I just see it as part of the work itself. Most fashion photography is airbrushed and as I mentioned, I kind of like the glossy, over-the-top look :)

the other kate (ffs!) (papa november), Friday, 25 February 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, stevem and jocelyn. That reflection photo was really hard to get with my crappy camera, I'm surprised that it worked out so well.

...Kate, may I use your photo as an LJ icon?

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 25 February 2005 08:26 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and obviously I changed the colour of her eyes considerably (I actually think the eyes let down the work, might change them back to a slightly more natural colour.

xpost

Yeah for sure. My work is to share, not to lock up with a key. Would kind of defeat the purpose eh?

If you want to keep updated with my photos, my user name on LJ is phntmpwrsource but don't feel obliged.

the other kate (ffs!) (papa november), Friday, 25 February 2005 08:28 (twenty years ago)

wow, that's great to see the before and after. i've been doing a bunch of "airbrushing" at work lately. it's such a fun feeling making photos all smooth and "fake".

LaToya JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 25 February 2005 08:37 (twenty years ago)

Kate, what kind of camera do you use?

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 25 February 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

Exactly.

xpost

A Canon Powershot Pro1. 8MP digital. Regarding the model, I was lucky because she has flawless skin, so I didn't need to use any foundation or concealer to get the smoothness, just a crappy worklight I bought from a hardware shop and luck :)

the other kate (ffs!) (papa november), Friday, 25 February 2005 08:40 (twenty years ago)

your pictures are wonderful, kate, as are all here.

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 3 March 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

Whoa phil! I'm flattered, thats the nicest question anyones ever asked me. I'm just an amateur. I'm doing a fine art degree but I didn't major in photography even though I kind of regret not doing so now. I'd love to be a fashion photographer but I'm terrible at promoting myself which is potentially the biggest thing holding me back.

Stevie, thankyou so much. I worry people get the impression I'm showing off when i post my photos which is certainly not the case. I live for people telling me my work is good because I simply don't believe it myself.

Stevie: no filter - just an old 1970s Canon SLR and magical SE London light.

Really extraordinary stuff on this thread. I still find Gareth's pix chilling.

Your name is also the bomb. I went through a phase where everything was "baby loves headrub." I'm pretty obnoxious.

sugarpants (sugarpants), Friday, 4 March 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

Hey, you should post that one where Chris spelled his name with a sparkler!

Thanks sugarpants, as i was saying to someone else on here, that particular program never screened in australia, so i've had to do my catching up in the last 6 months via the DVD's.

and Girrol is really onto something. so much movement going on there. and i ve made the protestor w/bear hat my backround for weekend.

photos i take are all similar to gareth. minus a few time zones, ok many time zones. i dont go for digital photos much. sort of fell out of love with cameras a few years back.

Whoa phil! I'm flattered, thats the nicest question anyones ever asked me. I'm just an amateur. I'm doing a fine art degree but I didn't major in photography even though I kind of regret not doing so now. I'd love to be a fashion photographer but I'm terrible at promoting myself which is potentially the biggest thing holding me back.

hey kate, you should put a book together and get out there. if you really want to do fashion photography, its really all about who you know. i vaguely know this stylist from australia who moved to nyc with a good book, and one phone number, and 2 months later she was assisting for shoots for vogue. wtf. anyhow, i know some model bookers, designers, fashion people in australia i could show it to when you have a good book together.

Okay, I forgot about this picture, it's the best I've ever taken. Extra points for being extremely drunk at the time. The blur is perfect with the focus on the gay mexican's face. I love the girls in the back ground that were unwilling participants in this moment of debauchery.

Jim, I swear I will take it. I did a pass through that stretch of highway with my camera in hand and my wife steering, but a lot of the right-of-way had been deforested to make room for utility lines and it was so fucking depressing. Plus I was in my truck, a few feet higher off the ground, so the angle wasn't right. It'll get done, esp. now that the trees are in full leaf.

Okay, here goes.

http://kateobriencreative.com/fragonard.gif
Here's the original image by Fragonard

http://kateobriencreative.com/figure1.jpg
I started by painting a backdrop, nothing special just a lot of mottled paint on board.

http://kateobriencreative.com/figure2.jpg
This is the basic setup without the model in the shot. You can see how gaudy and gross it looks before I processed it. That's about $15 worth of artificial roses and Spanish moss.

This is the unedited image. When I took it into processing, basically I made the contrast really low and adjusted the colour temp a lot higher than usual. I also messed the with luminance channel, which is why her skin has that porcelain look about it.

Cropped, processed.

There's a lighting diagram.

The end.

Oh no, Guadalajara won't do. (Kate.), Thursday, 9 October 2008 05:47 (sixteen years ago)

Hmmm...image limit.

I'll try again.

Bloody well done, my dear. Bloody well done.

crusty but benign (kenan), Thursday, 9 October 2008 06:04 (sixteen years ago)

Love the way you got the same effect from a flower as the original did from a flying bird. Better, almost -- what is the bird doing in that original painting? Is it going to kiss her? Unlikely. It's about to smash pointy-beak-first into her face, looks like. Is this a blind bird?

crusty but benign (kenan), Thursday, 9 October 2008 06:19 (sixteen years ago)

Anyway, the flower makes more sense.

crusty but benign (kenan), Thursday, 9 October 2008 06:19 (sixteen years ago)

The "after" photo of that painting:

http://www.cnn.com/resources/potd/1999/03/31/top.fabio.bird.jpg

crusty but benign (kenan), Thursday, 9 October 2008 06:22 (sixteen years ago)

Heh. The name of the original is, "Jeune Fille délivrant un oiseau de sa cage" which I think roughly translates as Young Girl putting her bird back in it's cage :)

Oh no, Guadalajara won't do. (Kate.), Thursday, 9 October 2008 06:22 (sixteen years ago)

Isn't that an artificial bird in the photo?

Kerm, Thursday, 9 October 2008 06:28 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah. I was kind of disorganized with that shoot and had to rely on what could be found down at the mall which was...not exactly what I had in mind. If I'd planned ahead, I could've bought a taxidermy canary on ebay :)

Oh no, Guadalajara won't do. (Kate.), Thursday, 9 October 2008 06:29 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, I thought it was just a wonky white rose.

crusty but benign (kenan), Thursday, 9 October 2008 06:37 (sixteen years ago)

Nah, just a retarded plastic bird with a feather stuck on it.

Kind of kills the mood right?

quickly, I'm gonna guess

crusty but benign (kenan), Thursday, 9 October 2008 12:09 (sixteen years ago)

All I did was have the match on the end of a pin, (which I removed in PS as that's all I can do with it) a lighter underneath the head of match to ignite without striking it out of shot, all against a black background.

Simple really ;)

not_goodwin, Thursday, 9 October 2008 13:00 (sixteen years ago)

you've been added libcrypt, sneakily steal away!

not_goodwin, Thursday, 9 October 2008 15:03 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks, but you don't upload the big versions to Flickr, do you?

(libcrypt) (libcrypt) (libcrypt), Thursday, 9 October 2008 15:14 (sixteen years ago)

Kate's got the lot, really - the compositional sense, the lighting, the costume and set design, rapport with the subjects, PS skills. It puts us poor snappers to shame!

Funny how I was falling over myself to contribute to this thread 2-3 years ago before I had any idea what I was doing (or while I didn't really have access to my old film stuff). And I wish I hadn't chosen photos of Ava either, cos I should probably keep that to the Parenting thread. And yet, all the best pictures remain those of the kids...

Never mind.

Here's a little macro shot (cheap extension tubes and a £5 zoom lens) from about a year ago:

Kate's photos always amaze me.

And Kenan, I can't see your Big Dipper, but I have a lot of lint on my monitor.

The Big Dipper is really what makes that photo.

I still love that, even though I never did follow up on my initial impulse to get an IR filter.

I took a lot of amazing pictures in Egypt a few years ago with this digital camera that made everything look like old photos from the 70s, but I ran out of space on flickr and dont have the funds to renew my account this year...

Adam Bruneau, Thursday, 9 October 2008 19:24 (sixteen years ago)

The Big Dipper is really what makes that photo.

Well... I'll say this. Once you see it, you can't un-see it. It adds.

goodwin/libcrypt: sometimes you can only download larger sizes if you are mutually friended - are you?

mineminefusic (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 9 October 2008 19:33 (sixteen years ago)

I think we are mutually friended. Who do you have set for being allowed to download yr stuff, under account -> privacy and permissions?

(libcrypt) (libcrypt) (libcrypt), Thursday, 9 October 2008 19:49 (sixteen years ago)

I'll add you as a friend, even though you've never bought me a drink!

four years pass...

This was taken towards the end of the day at Columbiabad outdoor pool in Berlin. There's a long queue to get up to the 10m board and the next person isn't allowed to climb until the person on the board has jumped. Some people climb up with bravado or hope but change their minds when they get there. Some take two or three minutes to jump when they do arrive at the edge eliciting groans from those waiting. Watching people jump off the 10m board becomes both addictive and hypnotic. This being Germany, on the whole people are not particularly kind to those that take a long time. On the other hand, this being Neukolln it doesn't feel particularly German. At least half of the people at this pool are not German and most of those are middle eastern. This wee guy (maybe 10 or 12) took longer than anyone and spent a good 4-5 minutes walking to the board-edge and back then back to the edge. Finally (but not) he decides to climb back down the ladder eliciting a massive groan from the crowd. The groan makes him change his mind and he walks to the edge, has one wobble then goes for it. I can't believe I managed to actually capture him in mid-air.
