Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox Zen Extra whatever the fuck it's called

Sorry to have to post it there, but their support forums are beyond a joke. I've registered like 4 times and it still refuses to recognise me whatever login I use.

Right. On about one in 5 of the MP3s I try to play, it now suddenly stops halfway through and announces a 'Playback Error'. This is on MP3s that have always played perfectly before.

Has anyone else had this? Could it possibly be because of space? On the 30GB player I now have about 1.5 Gigas of space left.

rwillmsen (rwillmsen), Thursday, 7 April 2005 07:57 (twenty years ago)

Sounds like your mp3s are scratched.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 7 April 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

I think the problem is that you're using the Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox Zen Extra or whatever the fuck it's called. Stick w/ WinAmp, or Quintissential (thanks Dang!) or whatever else is available FOR FREE on the interweb.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 7 April 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

?

I think he's talking about his portable mp3 player.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 7 April 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

I've got a 60GB Xtra and have had no problems with it whatsoever. A friend had to remove and replace the battery on his after getting a firmware error.

Is it the same files failing every time? Sounds like the hard disk might be damaged.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 7 April 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

From other people experiencing that error, the standard answer seems to be:
"It's probably down to the audio tracks. What are the specs of the audio?
Forum Moderator
Creative Labs"

.. When you get the error. After you reset everything & start playing again, see if you can play the song that you got the error on. Make note of the file specs.

I'll post your question on the support forums for you. I may change the title though.

Duplicate post but different username.

Rumbled!

Huey (Huey), Thursday, 7 April 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Thanks very much. I reloaded the something or other and it is no longer fucked.

Sounds like the hard disk might be damaged.

I'd know exactly what to do in that case. I'd kill myself.

rwillmsen (rwillmsen), Friday, 8 April 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

Should I get a mini ipod or a Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox Zen Extra or whatever the fuck it's called?
I want something pink.

Nellie (nellskies), Friday, 8 April 2005 06:09 (twenty years ago)

Do you like the iTunes software, if so buy the iPod.

Ed (dali), Friday, 8 April 2005 06:26 (twenty years ago)

this has happened with my zen a couple times, it was always a problem with certain tracks. i just reset my zen and deleted the tracks taht were causing problems and everything was dandy.

latebloomer: strawman knockdowner (latebloomer), Friday, 8 April 2005 09:41 (twenty years ago)

The Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox Zen Extra or whatever the fuck it's called is 50% bigger than the biggest iPod in terms of capacity and is much cheaper (£189 inc. VAT for the 60GB one from pixmania).

It is however, quite chunky, and it isn't an iPod.

I'm perfectly happy with mine but iPods do look nice.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 8 April 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

best I can find for the 60GB one is £259 and it doesn't come in pink.

I believe nellie is in the market for either a Zen Micro (5GB, £149)or iPod mini (4GB, £139; 6GB £159)

Ed (dali), Friday, 8 April 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/35132/art/creative/jukebox-zen-xtra-60-gb.html

But no, not pink.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 8 April 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

that is cheap.

Ed (dali), Friday, 8 April 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

One warning - the transformer/charger will come with a European power lead so you will need to find a UK one (but it's a standard lead so there's no problem).

I bought mine through them, they shipped it from France via DHL - 24 hour delivery. No complaints at all.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 8 April 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

I think I'm just going to get the ipod, but I'm kind of shitty cause I want the FM transmitter. But I also want the trashy trashy pink 6GB. Is it true with ipods you have to keep itunes in exactly the same order?

Nellie (nellskies), Friday, 8 April 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

no you can have the ipod sync to only specific playlists instead of your whole music folder. i just have a playlist called @IPOD SYNC and put things there

ronny longjohns (ronny longjohns), Saturday, 9 April 2005 03:13 (twenty years ago)

four months pass...
Hi folks, sorry if this is against ILX protocol or something, but those fuXors at Amaz0n won't let me list this on Marketplace, cos it's one of their best-sellers and I might piss off their Big Scary Clients by undercutting them with my One Solitary Fucking Listing.

Anyway. For reasons too dull to go into, I have a spanking new, still sealed and very pretty silver Creative Zen Micro 5gb for sale.

http://media.venda.com/btshop/ebiz/btshop/invt/cch171/cch171_f.jpg

The only reason I don't want it is because its not enough memory for me; the only reason I've got it is because I'm an idiot who didn't read the small print properly.

I'm thinking £150 is about right. Anyone?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 5 September 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

i'll take 5 of them for £2.50

ken c (ken c), Monday, 5 September 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

...aaand I've just noticed that the above-mentioned Pixmania site is offering it for and extremely reasonable £128,50...pah. guess I'd better match that then!

xpost very bloody funny ken.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 5 September 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

And of course you'll have to include the same kind of warranty and returns policy that Pixmania offer. Maybe a simple £100?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 5 September 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Is that a sort of back-handed haggle, or have you appointed yourself ILX ombudsman and gatekeeper of electronic standards and practices?

It's still sealed. It came from Dell, with whom it has a three-year warranty. If it breaks, I'll send it to Dell and they'll repair or replace it. It's not like I'm hard to track down if necessary!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 5 September 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

and that was perhaps more curt than necessary. apologies.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 5 September 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

No, I'm just saying that if I bought an electronic device off a person I'd want it to be cheaper than if I bopught it from a retailer who have a legal obligation to provide warranties yadda yadda. £100 seems a decent price that's not too far below market value, but might still be a bargain to someone. After all, you wouldn't want to rip off your friends, right?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 5 September 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

Well, to be fair, before i'd seen that uncharacteristically low price on Pixmania, all of my research had uncovered an average price hovering around £145-£155; as such, selling a completely new, still sealed piece of kit - which is but a phone call (to me) away from a 3-year warranty - for 2/3 of its average retail value seems like I'm selling myself short.

There's absolutely no question of ripping anyone off - my cards are on the table...but I can't afford not to get as close to the price I paid as possible: £120 +VAT + delivery = £150.40 (Dell don't sell any other models of MP3 player, but won't give me a refund). I think my reasoning is fair, even if it scares everyone off!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 5 September 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

I think markelby assumed you got 8 for 49p

RJG (RJG), Monday, 5 September 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

naah, than I'd just flog them for a fiver each and have done with it! this is just me, trying vainly to claw back some ground from a daft and hasty buying choice.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 5 September 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

sounds fair enough, to me!

RJG (RJG), Monday, 5 September 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Charlie can't you just return the product to where you purchased it, exchanging it for the model you did want in the process (and paying the diff.)? Threaten to bitch about them on ILX if they say you can't do this at no extra charge.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 5 September 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

(Dell don't sell any other models of MP3 player, but won't give me a refund)

RJG (RJG), Monday, 5 September 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 5 September 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Literally, the Zen Micro (admittedly in various colours) is all they sell, MP3 player-wise. I bought it as part of a laptop package, and for some reason (fuckwittery/forgetfulness, most likely) neglected to check the spec of the player before clicking the "yes" button. Even 20gb would be ok, but 5? Not for me. Pah. I should've smelt a rat when they told me they couldn't guarantee which colour it'd be!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 5 September 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

jeffrey (johnson), Monday, 5 September 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

http://www.pixmania.co.uk have a 20gb iPod Photo for under £200, it seems. If that's any help. They also seem to have a million international sites - click on the link above, scroll to the bottom of the homepage and click on your flag of choice!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 5 September 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

cheeky bump. anyone?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 08:14 (twenty years ago)

if no one on here is interested you might want to look into ebay - there are quite a few bids on the zen micros they have there..

(although the brand new ones i can see so far are only going for like £50 but with 4 days more of bidding to go - and they usually only bump up on the last day)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 08:24 (twenty years ago)

Threaten to bitch about them on ILX

Watch them crumble.

Huey (Huey), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

Keep it Chuck, it's fantastic.

Huey (Huey), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

Amazon wouldn't let me sell my Sony thing either. Bunch of gay bummers. You have to be "approved".

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

what's wrong with ebay though?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

Cheapest eBay Zen Micro at £87.99. Though they do charge an astonishing £26.99 for postage.

Huey (Huey), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

yeah it's all the way from singapore (although it's a ZEN NEON MICRO!)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 10:20 (twenty years ago)

oops NEEON

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 10:21 (twenty years ago)

wow!
http://images.sg.creative.com/images/inline/products/zenneeon/4-1.jpg

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

dude, they look rockin'.

what's wrong with eBay? it's so bloody fiddly! it takes fuckin' ages to list anything, and you have to input every bloody tiny bit of information yourself. it's a full-time job!

amazon, on the other hand, is a five-clicks-and-you're-done service - no buggering about with setting minimum auction prices or describing your product, just pick a price and a condition-of-product setting, and you're done.

huey, what's so amazing about the micro? i mean, it sure looks pretty (haha, can you tell i'm watching Gene Kelly's "Anchors Away" right now? Swell!) but isn't 5gb a bit crappy for my needs?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

okay then, new game - convince me to keep my silver Zen Micro 5gb MP3 player!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

No, 5 gig is not crappy for anyone's "needs". (NB: no-one "needs" any of this. 3 years ago you'd be lucky to carry a few 7"s around with you, now look at you spoilt bastards).

5 gig really good for paring down all the crap. I've had a 60 gig Zen for over 2 years, and whilst it's obviously amazing to carry every piece of music I've ever wanted around in my trousers, it's not like I listen to every track over and over again.

Being limited is the new black in the respect of MP3s, as it means you are forced to evaluate the music that means the most to you, whilst keeping everything else on other media (i.e. a PC).

Having too much portable music = overload of choice. Do I really need 98 Serge fucking Gainsberg tracks, 60-odd dustbowl blues recordings from the 30s, ancient US advert jungles, multiple volumes of road music from Vietnam, or hundreds of qawallis, ragas, employee training tapes, audiobooks, sound effects, alternate versions of barely listenable albums and some Steven Wright bootlegs?

Yes, but not in my pocket. Tell you what, I'll take it off your hands for, say, a joy division boxset.

Huey (Huey), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

that's a highly convincing and erudite argument. i'm virtually convinced.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

Huey is right. I find it dispiriting to have some much music at my disposal, yet still find I don't want to listen to any of it. It is best, I think, to use it as a fancy compilation tape.

I would however, like to explore those ancient US advert jungles.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

"Come to the Amazon, it's SWELLtering!"

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

what's wrong with eBay? it's so bloody fiddly! it takes fuckin' ages to list anything, and you have to input every bloody tiny bit of information yourself. it's a full-time job!

but at least you wouldn't have to defend the ethicality like you had to and be accused of possibly ripping off your friends and had to provide guarentee of return and repair policies like here!!!!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

PJ, I'll YSI those jingles to you when I get a chance. Also available: KPC employee training tapes.

Huey (Huey), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

eBay's so not fiddly Charlie, especially if you've a nice, easily packaged product to sell. Plus, what's wrong with putting a little effort into these things? Sounds like you expect everything on a plate to me...

Huey (Huey), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

haha very funny.

Sorry huey, remind me, was it you who wanted me to list all your unwanted CDs on Amazon for you, because YOU DON'T HAVE THE TIME to do it yourself?

And there's the rub...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

Time and inclination are two very different beasts, you know?

Huey (Huey), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

but both result in cold hard cash innit!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Charlie, would you want to swap your 5 GB Zen Doo-dah for a 20 GB Sony NW HD-3? 20 GB is too much for me. You can read all about its pros and cons elsewhere, and I'll give you an honest answer to any questions. It is used, but not abused. Original packaging intact, etc.

Just a thought. One that came to me in the night.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 07:14 (twenty years ago)

You can't say fairer than that Chuck, that's a great machine.

If you do this deal with PJ, I might give even send you some good music to load on it, to counterbalance all the fey indie nonsense that's going to immediately take up at least 10 gig*.

(*Just using up my insult quota before I leave the country, I hope you understand.)

Huey (Huey), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 07:47 (twenty years ago)

PJM's got that Sony packed with top-notch classical blockbusters - the kind of fiery shit that's too hott for Classic FM.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 07:50 (twenty years ago)

Are you trying to talk me into keeping it, Michael? You make me sound like quite the dandy. I took all the Stravinsky off, but Vaughan's Scott of the Antarctic soundtrack is still there, unlistened to and forgotten.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 08:01 (twenty years ago)

Take PJ's Vaughan, I'll add a bunch of Satie, Clara Rockmore, and yes, my own score to Gogol's Madman, and you're in classical heaven.

Huey (Huey), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 08:06 (twenty years ago)

crikey. and just as i was about to crack open the box...there are too many persuasive people round here!

the thing is, i've kinda come around to huey's way of thinking re: space, and i already know the Zen Micro is a beautiful and functionally impressive, pocket piece of kit.

pj, surely having *too much* memory is a problem any man can handle without actually jettisoning some? or is it niggling you that you might never use it all? i can imagine...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

I can use it all, I have had it full, or almost full. It's just that I don't want to listen to it all, or even very much of it. I think it's just me being daft and mentally unstable. I find it - untidy.

I will just use it as a big C90.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

I've been making C90s for the car. It's not tremendously liberating in its real-time restrictiveness or anything like that, it's mainly a pain in the arse. Running a stopwatch on the end of one side to see which remix off that CD-single you can fit and so on. (44 Pipas songs on one tape, though - whoo-hoo!)

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 09:27 (twenty years ago)

Maybe I will just duff myself up.

I no longer get much pleasure from music.

So it is not the dream gadget I thought it was.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

i had to skip about 30 songs on my ipod this morning on the way to work

but then slipknot came on and all was well in the world again.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)

see, part of the reason i've never had an mp3 player until now - i've been happy with minidisc, cd walkman and a burner - is the PH34R that the stupendous choice i'll suddenly face will be too much for me to bear and i'll just...shut down and never listen to anything else again.

i mean, life's full enough as it is, y'know? so perhaps 5gb is a better plan for me.

oh it's so hard!

i think i should just shut up and use thed bloody thing, to be honest. not exploding with love for that sony one either, phatter though it is.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 10:09 (twenty years ago)

right, decision made. unusually, i'm going to take huey's advice and keep the majority of my music on my pc, while putting all my mimsy indie drivel wonderfully eclectic current stuff onto the Zen.

Thanks for watching, folks! And PJ, thanks for the offer, but you'll just have to pretend you've only got 5gb...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

You are a wise man, Charlie. There is nothing to love about the Sony.

I will use NO COMPRESSION files to make it feel smaller, yet more throbbing.

That's another thing - I tend to imagine it sounds bad when it probably doesn't, and I wouldn't notice anyway.

The two Greek members of staff have just passed me on the stairs and they didn't even see me.

That last bit was for Michael.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

So I opened it...and it's not even bloody silver! the box, he LIE! it's white. still pretty fucking cool though. and so, so very tiny!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

Your character arc on this thread is fascinating Charlie.

Huey (Huey), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

What happened next?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

Did you find a Golden Ticket?

Huey (Huey), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

"character arc"? are you a channel 4 drama commissioning editor? just wondering. and i don't know what you mean.

so...i already hate my new toy. why does it take so long to upload stuff onto it? for some reason i was expecting to be ablt to drag and drop and album in a couple of seconds, but it's taking FOREVER. i think i might be doing it wrong.

bring back wax cylinders etc.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

the software that comes with creative mp3 players is terrible. i use something called notmad explorer which is much, much better

jimmy glass (electricsound), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

Charlie, maybe you need USB 2? Which is about another 20 quid, I think :-(

If it is any consolation, the Sony software is bad too.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 8 September 2005 06:43 (twenty years ago)

and now this: http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/

http://images.apple.com/ipodnano/images/indextop20050907.jpg

my timing suXor!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

I think I already have USB2...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:37 (twenty years ago)

It really shouldn't be that slow. Transferring a standard track via USB2 - even using Creative's software (which I do) - takes a couple of seconds, at most. A whole album should take about 30 seconds. Are you using Creative MediaPlayer or Creative MediaSource?

Huey (Huey), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

Hye, the iPod Nano doubles as a plectrum!

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

that thing is gorgeous

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

I might get a 4gb black iPod Nano.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

While it's clearly tiny, "Nano" is overstating it a bit isn't it? In a couple of years time we'll all be laughing that it dared call itself "Nano" when we'll have proper tiny bots in our bloodstream feeding us sounds from the ether. Which pretty much makes this "Nano" dated already.

Huey (Huey), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm using musicmatch, cos the creative software made no sense to me whatsoever. the zen instruction book (yes, i actually read it!) told me to "simply drag and drop" so i was expecting a pretty straightforward windows-based interface, but what faced me was completely confusing and bore no resemblance to any dragging and dropping i've done before.

i don't understand why the folders i keep my albums in, on my pc, all bloody disappear as soon as i upload them onto my player! it creates "albums" i never had (ie if i have one track off an album, it kids me that the whole album's there) and loses the ones i have.

will i really - as i fear - have to create smart tags for every single mp3 i own, for it to work properly?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

It's the tags that are creating the 'albums', you can remove them and have a big album named 'unknown album'

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 8 September 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

i'm waiting for the Pico

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 8 September 2005 10:09 (twenty years ago)

so do i need one of these?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004Z5T2/qid=1126178595/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_3_3/202-8484126-8420658

i don't have a usb2, it turns out.

re: tagging - once my mp3s are on the machine, i can't dick about with the tags, can i? this is a lot more involved than i was expecting!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 8 September 2005 10:33 (twenty years ago)

you can with notmad

jimmy glass (electricsound), Thursday, 8 September 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

Is a USB 2 not the same as a USB 1, but with a different lead? I haven't got one anyway.

All these little niggles are what annoys me about the current 'music on the move' market, apart from the things mentioned above. Unless you like endless dicking about on computers, it is a chore. Its choreness makes the music less pleasurable once you have got all the dicking about over and done with and have settled down for some top tunes.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 8 September 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

Charlie, are you using a laptop or a desktop? PC or mac? If a desktop, you need one of these.

P.S. Just got your message by the way. Sorry wasn't around last night.

Huey (Huey), Thursday, 8 September 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

hey, notmad looks great. is the trial version any cop, or ought i really to shell out some cash?

http://www.redchairsoftware.com/notmad/getnotmad.php

(I'm using a laptop)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 8 September 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

Is a USB 2 not the same as a USB 1, but with a different lead?

USB2 is different from USB1, but with the same lead.

You can pick up a USB2 card for less than a tenner.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 8 September 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

so that thing i linked to above, is rubbish/inappropriate then?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 8 September 2005 10:56 (twenty years ago)

Do you have a PCMCIA slot(s) on the side of your laptop?

Huey (Huey), Thursday, 8 September 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

If so, buy this instead. You need USB 2.0 in your life, not just for Zens.

I installed a new USB2 card and use my old USB cable. I didn't know there was such a thing as a USB2 cable. I assume they must be rated in some way but my bog standard one works fine for me.

Still, it's got gold connectors, it's nice and long, and it's only £3, I say buy it.

PCMCIA? I don't know! What does it look like?

it's fun to slot in the PCMCIA

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 8 September 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it feels quite 80s.

Huey (Huey), Thursday, 8 September 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

I remember standing with colleagues staring in wonder at a 120MB PCMCIA hard drive and thinking technology really had minituarised to its limits.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 8 September 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

yeah i think i've got one of those. it's like a fat credit card slot, right?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 8 September 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Problem solved, then! PCMCIA you later!

Huey (Huey), Thursday, 8 September 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

hmmm. except...next to the socket on my Zen it actually says USB 2.0, leading me to assume that the cable it came with is a USB 2.0 cable. Surely my spanking new laptop would already have the most up-to-date gizmos inside it?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 9 September 2005 06:11 (twenty years ago)

I have reduced my music content to 5 GB. It was surprisingly difficult. All that Vladimir Horowitz down the pan! Up yours, Bruckner! I still haven't reached the massive compilation state of grace that I desire, but it's a start. However, it in no way resembles a C 90 tape.

(My laptop does not have USB 2, or the means to install it.)

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 9 September 2005 06:31 (twenty years ago)

Ipod nano says it "displays the color album art for the song you’re listening to right now"! How?

I need to come home and get a job so I can buy a new computer with xp, to play AOE III and have an ipod :(

What, wait, you've got a new laptop? In that case you need to buy nothing. There's probably another issue here. I'm not aware that USB2 cables are any different from USB1, but a new cable is incredibly cheap, pennies even. Hell, I've got loads of spares.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:14 (twenty years ago)

ah, thanks ken, looks useful - will check it all out when i get home.

so if my new laptop is equipped with USB 2.0 capabilities, and assuming the cable which came with my Zen is indeed the USB 2.0 cable it seems to be trying to tell me it is...then why is the transfer rate so frickin' slow???

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

how slow is it? like approximately how long does it take to move each song?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:26 (twenty years ago)

ummm. maybe 10-15 seconds a song? which doesn't sound like much but it's a lot when you're doing 900 songs in one pop. maybe i overloaded the poor thing.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:56 (twenty years ago)

It might have to "think about it" before doing a big job lot. Mine does.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

*thinks*, yep, it took about four hours to move everything from my laptop onto the machine. i was expecting to be able to use it like a flash drive, ie just move files over and have done with it. i am obviously expecting too much.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

It has to think abouit it before deleting them to, whereas I expected it to be like musical Etch-a-Sketch.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 9 September 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

It is a Zen, after all. Perhaps it's just reverencing the Sangha.

Huey (Huey), Friday, 9 September 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

i must say, i really, really enjoy my zen.
