Why are vegans such tedious control freaks?

Really. I've yet to meet a vegan who has anything like a healthy relationship with food. Everything is fraught with them, they talk about what they're eating and when constantly, they're pale and runny-nosey, and I swear up to half of them are using veganism as a vehicle for their various eating disorders.

I was vegan for 6 years, andI just started eating meat this month. I don't think I can goback. I feel SO HEALTHY and awake all the time, I stopped passing out when my period starts, or just about any other time.

I think there's a certain amount of paranoia that goes along with being vegan; this can perhaps translate into excessively controlling behavior, or maybe it's just perceived that way ("OMG WTF ARE YOU ***SURE*** THERE'S NO BUTTER IN THIS?!??!?!?!")

Vegans aren't necessarily skinny, so I don't know why they would be mean to fatties in general.

Am I the only one who's felt more relieved for checking ingredients, as opposed to feeling more paranoid? I mean, it's not just for determining if an item is vegan or not. It's a generally useful thing that I think most should do when buying groceries. (That said, you can't easily ask for the ingredients when you eat out.)

Donut: Ingredient checking doesn't play a large role in all peoples lives. For example, if my average trip to the grocery store yields cheese, fruit, meat, bread and pretzels, what have I to worry about? Maybe I'll buy some cookies with some preservative, but exercising common sense and avoiding bizarre frozen foods and pre-packaged meal components goes a long way towards healthy eating.

My big problem is people asking me if I'm vegetarian and then quizzing me on if it's healthy. I simply say "seems to be" and "works for me" until they shut up. Yet, I don't classify all non-vegan eaters as annoying assholes who are tedious jerks.

FYI, when I was NON-vegan was when I looked pale, runny-nosed and sickly.

recently a girl told me she was losing motivation about being vegan. I thought using the word "motivation" was a sign her eating habits = an over-important part of her id, didn't thought about the "paranoia" idea thanks Ian, so I just said yeh I'm a vegetarian/honorary vegan I guess; when everything is easy I don't eat animals but when it would be too much trouble otherwise I go along whatever. I just don't think about it too much. She decided to understand this as being mildly condescending so in retort she turned a phrase accordingly. Everything seems fraught allright,maybe, but I don't think it's related with your other observations, shookout, in this case I think it's because resentment is big in her view of the world, thanks to crummy "anarchists", into "crimez!"

I don't know, I've known a lot of vegans and I think most of them were pretty alright, no more or less dickish than anyone else. Maybe a bit smug, but whatever. I'm overweight, and I don't remember ever being bullied by any vegans or vegetarians, though I always feel a little uncomfortable around them, like I'm being judged. But honestly, I feel that way around almost everyone. I don't want to date a vegetarian or vegan again, but you know, it's not a deal breaker or anything. Frankly I don't mind having a good dietary influence around me.

FWIW the only problems I have with vegans are that I typically don't cook vegan food, but I like to have my friends over for dinner once in a while (which reminds me, maybe it's time for NOISE DINNER soon) and so I specifically have to cook vegan stuff for people DDB and my friend Joe. And HPENCIL now too, I guess.

I understand why someone might feel a little bit uncomfortable being around a vegetarian, but I hate it when I'm going out to eat people and they freak out with, "Oh no! I forgot you're vegetarian? What are we going to do??!" as if it excludes all regular restaurants entirely and means they'll have to eat at a hippie cafe.

I think I've said this on about 6 other vegan/vegetarian threads, but I've been one or the other for most of my life, have known at least dozens if not hundreds of vegans and vegetarians, and have never met a single one of these obnoxious, obsessive, evangelical "how dare you eat meat in my presence" types. I'm not saying they don't exist. I have heard anecdotal reports from reliable sources. But still. The stereotype to me seems to arise much more from some kind of anxiety induced in non-vegetarians by the mere theoretical existence of vegetarianism -- like, just being around a vegetarian or vegan causes some kind of defensive angst in some omnivores. Like they feel an implied judgment even if there isn't one.

the whole thing mystifies me. shookout, if your vegan friends are such weird douchebags then it says as much about your and your taste in people as it does about vegans as a whole. if they're not your friends, rather people you've encountered in passing, then forget about it. why waste such time and energy on psychologising and worrying and second-guessing?

I don't really see what the big deal is about vegetarians or vegans. I am not one, but no one has ever given me a hard time about it. I guess I'm just not getting where the animosity towards them is coming from.

It made me feel self conscious when a friend's girlfriend who was vegan said "I'd rather have cancer than be fat. And that's why I'm vegan." Now that's issues.

i am omnivorous but have lots of vegan friends and several of them are the nicest, gentlest, least judgemental people i know (none of them match the rather silly characterisation in the thread title, but then i don't hang around fictional student unions circa 1987).

i always order vegan food if we have lunch together but that's cos i feel personally guilty for not being a vegan, or at least not investigating properly where my food comes from. I have this inbuilt feeling that it's kinda gauche, uncool to eat meat.

poster 1: why would anyone be vegan/own a pitbull? not eating meat/owning a potentially vicious animal is downright screwy.

poster 2: i have a pitbull/know a vegan/am a vegan and it's lovable/he's normal/i'm healthy and don't have issues.

poster 3: i think pitbulls/vegans should be banned and destroyed.

They both don't seem to realize that many of us who don't pay such close attention to what we eat are perfectly healthy and live to ripe old ages.
I've only known one or two vegans who annoyed me, but really they would have had an annoying personality, vegan or not. Veganism seems to attract a certain sort of grating, my-body-is-a-temple new-age hyper-sensitive very neurotic personality type, though. (which by no means, uh, means that all or even a majority of vegans fit this)

I'm not completely sure what vegan objections to locally-sources eggs are, unless they're pretty high-ideology "we don't have the right to avail ourselves of other creatures' work" - hens lay eggs, yes? or not yes? I'm veg since 1995, that creatures shouldn't have to suffer/die to feed me seems self-evident, but local cheese/eggs don't seem at all problematic to me unless the hens/cows/goats are slated for slaughter

can post more on this later, but obviously the production of eggs and dairy on whatever sort of scale only requires the female chicken or cow or goat. you'd always need to bring new chickens or cows into the world to replace older ones as their productivity drops off (and what happens to these older chickens and cows then?), but all the male chicks and calves that are born are pretty much redundant, so it would be exceptional if they were allowed to grow to maturity. and obviously dairy production relies on a constant cycle of enforced pregnancy and birth to bring the cows into lactation, they don't just start producing milk for no reason. you're going to end up with lots of unwanted calves or goat kids there of either sex.
