First of all, who all in this bee-yotch lives there?

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

Second, Comfort is the best goddamn soul food I've ever had. Creole Shrimp was the bomb tonight.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 04:19 (twenty years ago)

I THINK WE HAVE TOKYO ROSEMARY COULD CONFIRM BUT SHE"S GOING TO BED.

PS SOUL FOOD NORTH OF MASON-DIXON SUCKS DUDE

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

HAHAHAHAHAHA YOU ARE SO WRONG.

Seriously, Comfort is better than any place I've tried in the South, including the "legendary" Mama Dip's in Chapel Hill.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

i had astonishingly great barbecue in brooklyn last week. that's not jersey city tho. carry on.

I sense East Coast madness in the wee hours of the night!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

JC is not quite chock-full of good places to eat, but a couple of others I've found:

1) Lombardi's -- seems like sort of a best kept secret. AMAZING italian deli and gourmet pizza

2) Dosa Hut -- in the little India section, very tasty dosas, (as featured in The Voice)

3) Rasoi -- a good standard Indian restaurant

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 04:27 (twenty years ago)

dude, HURTING, ever hear of TEH GREAT MIGRATION?

-- hstencil (hstenc!...), April 12th, 2005.

Uh, YAH. That's why there's good soul food here.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 04:27 (twenty years ago)

WATERED DOWN

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 04:29 (twenty years ago)

Actually no.

Actually my guess is that the people that run this restaurant are actually from the south.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

Take one Path train to Jersey and try one meal at comfort. K thx bye.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

ACTUALLY TRY ONE SERCH FUNCTION

Hoboken vs. Jersey City FAJCP?

ACTUALLY CHAPEL HILL IS ABOUT AS "SOUTH" AS MEMPHIS IS NORTH

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

One search function was tried. One thread is mainly about Hoboken, the other about a long past FAP.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 04:37 (twenty years ago)

I R IN HOBOKEN

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 05:08 (twenty years ago)

Bro-boken isn't bad for some things. It's a very pleasant town to walk around on a nice day, many good restaurants, but the bro factor makes it suck at night.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 05:35 (twenty years ago)

the "bro factor"?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 05:38 (twenty years ago)

You know, the *dudes* that clog the streets at night.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 05:40 (twenty years ago)

I live here. Great Indian food and markets on Newark Ave., Mulu Baltena (Ethiopian) and the new Vietnamese place both on Bergen Ave. are good, rent is cheap and my neighbors are nice. Other than that Dirty City is just that.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 06:21 (twenty years ago)

but I have the same initials!

-- Hurting (Hurtingchie...), April 12th, 2005.

That asshole proprietor of Dosa Hut kicked me out last Sunday because - in his words - "you are taking too long to eat and I need your table". Mind you, I had my dosa all of five minutes and the place wasn't even full. I had been a steady customer of the place since they opened, but the fool decided to single me out. Never again. I left my food and walked.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 06:25 (twenty years ago)

Mulu Baltena (Ethiopian) and the new Vietnamese place both on Bergen Ave. are good,

Snap. I've never tried those places.

Madame Claude (French) and Marco and Pepe are both pretty good, but they're not cheap and everyone already knows about them. Ibby's Falafel is ok if you're looking to eat for 3-4 bucks. La Congajuita (Cuban) on Manilla is better than Hard Grove but kind of uneven.

That story about Dosa Hut is ridiculous.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, and Kitchen Cafe (kind of near the waterfront area, but I forget what street) has good breakfast.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

Once I was reading in Hamilton Park and this middle aged guy came up and started talkign to me. he went ont he racist rant for half hour. I was all 'uhhhh" Then the next day I was in the city and saw this guy on Allen St!

It's pretty meh. If you want late night diner, the one by the Holland Tunnel is probably a better bet. I haven't tried the diner on Grand St. yet.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

Best coffee I've had in town is at a place that just opened on Grand St. called Legal Grounds.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

WFMU. Enough said.

Random factoid I was recently surprised to learn: PM Dawn were from Jersey City.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Is the Newport Mall considered part of Jersey City? I like the Target over there. (I live in Hoboken.)

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Yes, it is.

So I guess the majority of you live in the Grove St. area? Lucky. I love Hamilton Park (that's what that little park surrounded by brownstones is called, right?) and wish I could afford to live down thereabouts.

Hey, Hurting - if ever up in this neighborhood (Journal Sq. area) and want to try the Viet or Ethiopian joints drop email me. I'll join ya.

Hey, Hurting - if ever up in this neighborhood (Journal Sq. area) and want to try the Viet or Ethiopian joints drop email me. I'll join ya.

-- Jay Vee (ziut...), April 12th, 2005.

Definitely.

Is the Vietnamese place over there better than the one on Newark Ave. more towards downtown? Cause that one was a little disappointing -- food was ok but everything was a bit sweet and bland.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

I've never tried the Viet place on Newark, but this one is fairly delicious. Lemongrass dishes actually have lemongrass in them and spicy dishes are spicy.

The Ethiopian cafe I also mentioned is tiny but theirs is the best Ethiopian I've had yet. And hella spicy.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

Lemongrass dishes actually have lemongrass in them and spicy dishes are spicy.

That is so key. The waiter at Wild Fusion (Thai) on Grove admitted to me that they don't actually use lemongrass.

I dig Ethiopian too -- Makeda in New Brunswick was pretty awesome, so I'll be impressed if it beats that.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

I forgot you live in Hoboken too, Eisbar. We should go grab a beer sometime.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 02:24 (twenty years ago)

Jay, anytime you want to try the soul food, give me a holler. The prices are moderate: 10-12 bucks gets you an entree, which is big and comes with two generous sides. Food is very good, especially for the price, atmosphere is very nice, and deserts are off the chain.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:32 (twenty years ago)

So I guess the majority of you live in the Grove St. area? Lucky. I love Hamilton Park (that's what that little park surrounded by brownstones is called, right?) and wish I could afford to live down thereabouts.

Yes, I have a rather unusual/unorthodox living situation and the rent is much cheaper than market for the area. The Grove area is ok but seems a little deader than it should be. Bars close too early (12pm in some parts).

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

Dude, I live on the same block as Comfort and eat there on the regular. We should meet up and talk music.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 05:16 (twenty years ago)

I'm out of town this weekend, unfortunately.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to try that soul food place sometime. This weekend's not so good, but maybe next.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

I went to the Ethiopian place tonight with the gf -- sorry I didn't lget in touch with you, but it was a last minute decision. I'd definitely go again sometime. The food was not as good as Makeda in New Brunswick, but considering it's about half the price ...

Has anyone ever been to Casa Dante? I read lots of rave reviews on various dining sites.

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 23 April 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

Meanwhile, I had din dins at Comfort and watched the first five episodes of the Wire with the girl over good mac+cheese.
It helps the heartbreak.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 23 April 2005 03:37 (twenty years ago)

Heartbreak?

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 23 April 2005 03:47 (twenty years ago)

Or was the mac and cheese just heartbreakingly good? Or is The Wire a heartbreaking work of staggering heartbreak?

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 23 April 2005 03:52 (twenty years ago)

how about we just have a new jersey thread? i feel this wonderful state is overlooked.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Saturday, 23 April 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)

There was this one:

defend the indefensible: new jersey

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 23 April 2005 04:17 (twenty years ago)

yeah, but thats a different kind of thread. you have to defend jersey on that one. here, there's no need to defend. its all appreciation and good vibes.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Saturday, 23 April 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

we can ask things like, "whats your favorite mall?"

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Saturday, 23 April 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

I have something to say. Marco & Pepe is wack. I've eaten there a couple of times, it was always ok but a little disappointing, and tonight was the corker.

My $10 burger was over-charred on the outside, and you idjuts even burned the bun! Maybe that's why it took so long -- you forgot it on the grill. Spinach was way too oily. Cake was dry and boring. Lavazza coffee is not worth $2. And that little cheese sample you passed out tasted like kraft parmesan. The steak and fish I've had have been mediocre. The mac and cheese and the chocolate torte are the only things I've ever been satisfied with. Way overpriced -- there are about 10,000 better meals to be had for the money in the area.

ps A friend of mine refers to the new coffee place across the street as "Marco & Pepe Lite" which is OTMFM.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 28 April 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

xxxxxxxxxxpost: The heartbreak was about a job I lusted for that I don't think I got.
Hurting, again, you're working on my block. Dins was Shrimp creole, yams and mac from the Comfort again. I always seem to be eating there when this thread comes up. Creepy.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 28 April 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

I almost went to Comfort instead -- wish we did. Shrimp Creole is the bomb.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 28 April 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

At least M&P has a good beer selection.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 28 April 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

I agree on the fact that it's too expensive.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 28 April 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

If everything was like 20% cheaper it'd be a charming little place with decent food. But it's overpriced for what it is and the food is not that special.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 28 April 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

Where is Comfort located, guys? Think I'll check it out tomorrow.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 28 April 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

Grove Street. Between Montgomery and something else I think? It's a basement restaurant, so it's easy to miss.

What's the Vietnamese place on Bergen called? I'll probably try that next.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 28 April 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

Pho Thang Long. Get there soon, though, because I think their quality's slipping.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 28 April 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

Twixt Montgomery and Wayne, on Grove, across the street from the mosque.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 28 April 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, and make sure you don't mistakenly go to Comfort BISTRO on Washington Blvd. That's a totally different animal.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 28 April 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

Thanks! Looking forward to Shrimp Creole & Mac/Cheese.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 28 April 2005 01:18 (twenty years ago)

Speaking of the waterfront -- there's a storefront by newport that says something about a video store called "Kim's" coming soon. Anyone know if this is connected to Kim's Underground in NYC?

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 28 April 2005 01:18 (twenty years ago)

Incidentally, I'd recommend the scampi over the creole. And get the red velvet cake if they have it!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 28 April 2005 01:20 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'd recommend the apple cobler over the red velvet cake, while we're at it.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 28 April 2005 01:20 (twenty years ago)

Hurting, are you a Pink Teacup fan? I prefer them, really.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 28 April 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

Sorry?

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 28 April 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

The Pink Teacup.
My fave soul food in the city, but then I never get up to Harlem, so...

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 28 April 2005 01:24 (twenty years ago)

Oh snap. I'll have to try that.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 28 April 2005 01:24 (twenty years ago)

I never bothered to make the trip to Sylvia's. I kind of doubt it's been able to maintain quality while becoming such a brand name.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 28 April 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

In business for 50 Years plus.
The walls are COVERED in autographed celebrity photos, many of the antique variety; the jukebox has lotsa Prince, Stevie and Marvin Gaye; the sweet potato pie is fuckin' great; the food is cheap; the chicken is kickin'; they gots pigs feet; the bathroom is accessible through what amounts to a batpole... it's got it all!

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 28 April 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone seen this magazine/journal called "Take"? It's realatively new -- the issue I have says volume one, issue two. Surprisingy good for a local mag -- miles above Chilltown for sure. The issue includes a fairly well-researched explanation of how public housing project towers came to be (though it kind of fails at its mission to actually tell us something about the ones in Jersey City), an excellent feature/explanation of the architectural styles found in JC houses, a visual essay by a pretty interesting local artist, some mediocre poems, some nice photos, and a "memoir" which I didn't bother to read. The design and layout are quite good.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

"Surprisingly" rather.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

Dude, we really should meet up Hurting; you clearly live down the street from me. You don't play ball do ya? I'm looking for somebody to throw down some hoops...

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

I do not. I wish I did, but I haven't played in about 10 years. I'm in bad shape, and I'd embarass not only myself but everyone in sighting distance.

That said, we should meet up. We should go to Comfort or some other local place -- maybe the Vietnamese place recommended above. My girlfriend and I are somewhat attached at the hip lately, but I don't think we're too cutesy and annoying to hang out with if you don't mind going with both of us.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

We're going to throw a big party/art show/music thing sometime in June -- I'll definitely give you, and everyone else here, the heads up.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

Oh, actually, if you want to meet up, I think my friend's band is playing at Uncle Joe's tomorrow night. Her name is Kate Sikora, and I think her band is called Red Sonja now, though she was uncertain about it. I'll try to find the info.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:48 (twenty years ago)

Red Sonja on first, 9:30 pm $5, other two bands are The Spaces In Between and The Multi-Purpose Solution. Terrible, terrible names, but I don't know the bands. We could always go somewhere else if it's lame.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:55 (twenty years ago)

My girlfriend is also joined at the hip, but she's a WFMU geek; I imagine she'll get along just fine. We're thinkin' about doin' Hitchhikers tomorrow night; I'm headed to the Met to see the Max Ernst exhibition during the day. So Metropolitan.
Dude, I can take that spare tire off. Could use a training partner...
In any case, I'll holla atcha. Hit me up on the email, eh?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:57 (twenty years ago)

I am seriously considering moving here. I work in Newark and currently live in NYC. I hate how fucking expensive it is (especially the fucking food. Ever buy bread here? God damn), and I've head Hoboken isn't much better price wise so so so so what say you? Is it worth it? Is it fun? Good places to live?

FajiMoney, Friday, 29 April 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

I've been here since September. I'll do the best to give you the lowedown. It's still cheaper than Hoboken, and the closeness to NYC is VERY convenient -- in that sense it's not much different than living in Brooklyn, and the PATH is cheaper than the Subway.

I live downtown, which is the most expensive part (and closest to NYC), but I have sort of a lucky deal. Apartments in this part of town are still cheaper than Hoboken to rent, but not always cheap. You can find a deal sometimes if you walk the streets and look for something being rented by some old owner who doesn't care or isn't up on the times. Friends of ours have a one bedroom for 900 in this area, and I've seen occasional two-bedrooms for under $1400, but usually that or more.

We live by the Grove St. and Pavonia PATH stops. The next one further in is Journal Square. I don't know that area as well, but I think there are some nice places and it's a little cheaper than downtown. There's a nice little Indian district near there.

I can't say Jersey City is as alive as Williamsburg or Park Slope. There are a few bars I go to but nothing I love. Uncle Joe's is the only place that really has bands. There does seem to be a Jersey City "scene" that I'm not really part of -- people who have been here a lot longer than I have. Even since I've been here, I've seen the downtown start to get more gentrified. There are a few very good restaurants both on the cheap ethnic end and the nice end.

I think it's still up in the air whether JC develops into some kind of thriving, fun, artsy place or just a yuppie bedroom community, but there are still a lot of people here trying to make the former happen. Worst comes to worst, you can always go to NYC, which we do pretty much every weekend.

Why laundry and drugs do not mix

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 2 May 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

I'd offer half of my two bedroom for seven hundred flat, utilities included for somebody who's planning on spending most of their time in the city.
I live where Hurting lives; the apartments incredible, enquire within.
yeah yeah i know ILM != craigslist, but I'd prefer an ilxor...

It is indeed. I was there for the last night and drank some free whiskey. Fight For Your Right To Party never sounded so poignant before (or for that matter, poignant at all.)

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

I didn't hear about it until this morning (and I didn't see the other thread first, hence my redundant post above - sorry about that) so I missed the big goodbye. I hope they are willing and able to re-open somewhere else - any news on that front?

krimur (louizah), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

oh, wait, AND I missed free whiskey - jeesus, this really hurts!

krimur (louizah), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

The bartender told me they're "looking for another location." I've heard that one before, hence the quotes. They did say they'd at least look into the old Rascal's location, but my guess is that it's too expensive. I'm also not sure whether or not they can transfer their liquor license to another place. Jersey City = shitty town for bars.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

forksclove are you just subletting it for the summer or renting it out? if the former, i might be interested

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

There's a new burrito place called Buddy's on Jersey Ave. somewhere around Grand. I've long felt that Jersey City needs a good burrito place, but this one doesn't quite deliver.

I ordered a spicy blackened chicken burrito, which, first of all, was overpriced at $7.50. The ingredients themselves were very fresh and tasty, so I think the place has potential, but the burrito was too bland. The "blackened chicken" was actually just plain grilled chicken. The rice and black beans were very good, but mild, and the only thing making it spicy was some pieces of jalapeno. No sour cream, pico, cheese, or anything else really to add flavor. Order also took a shitload of time, but I think they were struggling to fill a huge group order for a school Cinco De Mayo program.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

Dude, I'm a little bummed about Jersey City lately. I've been here seven or eight months now. Haven't really met folks, and there have been a couple of major developments for the worse -- 111 First St. getting shut down, Uncle Joe's closing. It feels like there's nowhere to hang out, the streets are dead.

I used to hate Williamsburg because it's so fucking trendy, but I was there last night and I was honestly just happy to see people my age flooding the streets. At least there is some life there.

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 7 May 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

A couple of food updates:

1) Rachel, the new place on Grove, is pretty good and has very pleasant atmosphere. Sort of Israeli/Mid-East food -- mainly sandwiches, salads, hummus type stuff, etc. Excellent mint lemonade.

2) We went to Comfort a couple days ago and it was downright nasty. I don't know what happened, but the quality had sharply dropped.

So who wants some sort of meet up next month or so? Now that I am soon to be UNEMPLOYED I will have weekends off!

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

I'd be up for it it -- a mini FAP or FAC(offee) or something like that.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

a JERSEY CITY or a HOBOKEN fap?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

By the way, breakfasts at Kitchen Cafe are very, very good. And sometimes if the chef is feeling generous at dinner they'll make fresh potato chips as the daily special. Like, thick-cut, fresh-out-of-the-fryer chips. Never tasted the like.

But please, please behave yourselves and tip well (I'm friends with most of the waitstaff).

Also, I would be delighted to come to a JC FAP where I could SMOKE AND DRINK SIMULTANEOUSLY. Imagine that. But where??

Laurel, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, Kitchen Cafe is good.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

I'm curious to try the new wine bar on Grove. I hear it's good.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

kitchen cafe is a GO if anyone wants to -- it's not that far from exchange place, right?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

It's v close to Exchange, but they don't serve any alkyhol there, Tad, and there's no smoking. So, no. Unless you're talking about a brunch meet-up in which case count me out; I love JC but these days I don't take the PATH before 2pm.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

I'm all about trying new bidnisses, and we recently got two might good ones:

1) Legal Grounds (Grand St. btw. Marin and Warren) - This guy roasts his own coffee beans on the premises. Best coffee in town, hands down.

2) Janam Tea (Manilla, one block from First St.) - This girl imports and blends her own teas. Plus they have a sweet super-deluxe scrabble board. Anyone up for scrabble?

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 11 August 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

How long is the PATH ride from Journal Sq to midtown?

15-17 minutes?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 11 August 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

From JSQ all the way to 33rd might be like 20 mins.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 11 August 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

22 mins exactly according to the PATH timetables.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 11 August 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

Was down at the Post Office on Montgomery yesterday and afterwards stopped by The Merchant for a beer. Best tap pint I've had in ages. Seriously. It was super clean and fresh tasting. I've never savored a pint of beer for 45 minutes in my life! New favorite afternoon bar.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 18 August 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

Did I miss th' fap?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 August 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

The Merchant ain't bad. That wine bar (The Majestic) next door is pretty nice too.

Oh yeah, another food thing:

Edward's Steakhouse sucks. I asked for my Sirloin Steak medium rare and they burned it. Considering it was the most I ever paid for a steak ($30) I expected a little better.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 18 August 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

Whoever's around tomorrow afternoon -- wanna meet up for Happy Hour?

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 19 August 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, could do. I'm supposed to be at birthday drinks for someone, but that's flexible. Where do you suggest? I'm not sure where to gather, now that we're sans Uncl3 J03's. Lucky 7s?

Laurel, Friday, 19 August 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

Late afternoon?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 19 August 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 19 August 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

I have a dirty secret about Merchants.
I've avoided the place ever since.. well, it's not that dirty. But I might try it just this once.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 19 August 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

Merchants has happy hour starting at 4 p.m. , I think.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 19 August 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 19 August 2005 02:14 (twenty years ago)

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 19 August 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

So is deez drinks happening?

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, now it's supposed to rain all afternoon and it looks like blazes outside. Sorry to be lame, but I don't think I'm crossing the state line in a thunderstorm.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm passing, also, unless the weather lets up.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

What we really need is a bar where I can drink fancy Belgian beer but in a laid back environment. The Majestic and Marco & Pepe are too swanky.

Hurting (Hurting), Sunday, 21 August 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

Revive for Oetgen. I'm not sure if I've been to Tanya's or not - is that the one at Grove and Grand St.?

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 25 August 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

Every time this thread pops up I wonder why I haven't met Hurting yet. Dude, you live down the block!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 25 August 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

I wonder too! Wanna go see Dungen at Maxwell's on September 14th? Wanna grab a beer some time this week?

BTW, I just saw that Bright Eyes is going to play the Loew's Theater in Journal Square. I'm not a particular fan, but this is great for JC. I really want that Loews to become a full-fledged concert venue. Apparently Bright Eyes did this once before and it was a big success.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 25 August 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

Hi Hurting:

I don't live in JC, I work in JC.

Where exactly is Comfort? It sounds good.

Have you ever tried Tanya's on Grove Street? Supposed to be good.

Now over at the Square we have Casa Dante on Newark Ave. First class Italian restaurant. If you've never tried it, by all means make a reservation some evening.

We also have the VIP diner on Kennedy Blvd. For a cheap, but good red sauce Italian, try the Parmigiana House. This place is in the basement of a bar on Kennedy Blvd next to Boulevard Drinks and the police annex. It can be a little intimidating when you first come upon it, but the people are friendly enough.

Oetgen

Oetgen, Friday, 26 August 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

I've eaten at Comfort a bunch of times. It's soul food - usually it's good but the last time I was there it was really bad and I'm a bit traumatized.

There's a younger black man and woman and and older black woman, who I think are the family that own it, that usually do the cooking. The one bad experience I had was when this young white guy with a crazy goatee and a young white woman were cooking, so you might want to avoid going if those two are there.

Anyway, prices are reasonable, service is slow, and if you don't get unlucky the food can be fantastic.

I don't think I've tried Tanya's, no.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 26 August 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

Hurt, that theater is amazing, I saw a Pharmacists show there a few years ago and it was only about half-restored but nothing was roped off so when I got bored with Calvin Johnson (which took about 15 minutes), I wandered around the place and drooled. Have you been to the movies there? I never went but they've had film nights, apparently.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 26 August 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

Laurel:

There is a volunteer group that is working on the restoration of the theater. It's been a slow process but it continues. If you have the time you might want to join them. They do a lot of their work on weekends.

Oetgen

Oetgen, Friday, 26 August 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

I saw, appropriately, "Forbidden Planet" at Loews Jersey. How is the music sound there tho? The movie speakers were pretty dicey (tho they did have "FP" in its tri-stereo Perspecta glory).

http://www.loewsjersey.org/

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 26 August 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

The show I saw was held in the front lobby, because the proper auditorium was mid-restoration. The fact that they could hold a Pharmacists/Calvin Johnson show in the lobby should be an indication of the size of the place, it's like a train station in there. I imagine the acoustics in the main audit. are fairly good since it was built to accomodate the live orchestral accompaniment to silent films (I spose that doesn't prove anything, it could still be crap, but I have hope).

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 26 August 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

It's a big ol' palace awright, but seeing movies in Radio City Music Hall as a kid spoiled me for everything else.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 26 August 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

Well then, Mr Lah Di Dah, I won't expect to find you heading up the volunteer committe, then. ;)

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 26 August 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

Hah! they'll get it done faster without me. (and too long acommute from Brooklyn -- WFMU's lucky to get me 4 days a year)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 26 August 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

There's an Italian place in the basement of that bar next to the McCrory's? Wow.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 26 August 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

I've never actually been inside the theater. Are there ever tours or times you can just go in on your own?

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 26 August 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

I expect so, since they want to encourage volunteer involvement -- you should call or email and ask! Phone # and addy are on that website Morbius linked.

Laurel, Friday, 26 August 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

And WHEN ARE WE GOING TO HAVE A FAP???

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 26 August 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

Uh, and is anyone doing anything tonight? I'm plan-less!

Also, seriously, does anyone wanna go see Dungen at Maxwell's? What about Helmet? Whoa, Helmet! At Maxwell's!

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 26 August 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

Hurt, I'm sure my ex would love to go see Helmet with you (in fact, I'm positive he'll be there). I will be as far away as I can possibly get, drinking something poncey and generally submerging myself in twee to repair the damage. :)

-- Jay Vee (ziut...), August 26th, 2005.

It's called the Parmigiana House. Lunch specials are about $6.00 and they have heroes and salads. Nothing fancy, but inexpensive good Italian food. It's not McCrory's BTW, it's C H Martin's.

Hey, do any of you folks have landlords that you would recommend that have other places available? Might be looking to move in town.

Also, for those that live in JSQ, do you recommend it? What's it like there?

Recent weeks have seen the opening of not one but two gourmet food stores in town -- GO at fifth and Jersey, and Hourglass on Jersey between Columbus and Newark. Hourglass seems to be the better of the two. At last, a place to get decent cheese.

Abbadabba Berman (Hurting), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

Hourglass is INSANELY expensive. More so by a longshot than even Manhattan. My question is whether or not it's jumping the gun; I don't know if this neighborhood's gentrified enough to keep it afloat yet.
3.25 for ginger soda? Meanwhile, at the bodega across the street that gets you lunch and at the Polish grocery a half block down, that equals a big ol' carton of sour cherry juice with change even.

Was able to get some of my gift-shopping done at Janam Tea. Can't really say how it runs price-wise, because there isn't much to compare it to (not a lot of Indian tea shops around). The tea itself seems pretty fairly priced for what it is. Some of the other items, pots and mugs and whatnot are a bit pricy. Anyway, it was really nice to be able to get a couple of people in my family unique, aesthetically-pleasing and good tasting things while avoiding the mall.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 09:02 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone ever been to the record shop on Bergen Ave.? I think it's called Stan's -- somehow I never knew it was there even though I've driven past it. Anyway, seems like a funny little JC institution -- the guy seems to specialize in old soul and doo-wop and stuff like that and mainly carries records. He had some kids coming in to buy hip-hop though and knew what was what when they asked him questions. I bought a couple little posters off him -- a Modern Jazz Quartet and a Lightin' Hopkins that are both pretty cool lookin.

Is Jersey City expensive? To own property? Like a condo? Thanks, I do no research myself ever on anything because I'm a...

Lazy Idiot, Sunday, 29 January 2006 04:33 (twenty years ago)

Jersey City has been very expensive to buy for the last few years, especially the area near the Grove St. PATH station. The cost of purchasing has way outpaced the cost of renting though. I rent. Which is not to say rents are cheap, but there are still reasonable deals out there. As far as buying, I'd recommend waiting to see if things cool down a little, because they've been absurdly hot here, and the hype has even inflated the prices in other JC neighborhoods that have less to offer.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 29 January 2006 04:36 (twenty years ago)

Gracias. That's what I thought. :-( Where will I settle down to own me some shit?

Lazy Idiot, Sunday, 29 January 2006 05:33 (twenty years ago)

The NYC area is all pretty absurd. But I don't know your price range. My friend's 2-bedroom condo in the Grove area that he bought a few years ago would now go for about $400,000. There are a bunch of nu-construction high rises going in that I've seen advertising condos for as little as 2 or 300,000.

By contrast my friend bought a rowhouse in South Philly, in sort of a working class neighborhood, for under $100,000. His mortgage and taxes are like my rent.

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 01:06 (twenty years ago)

xpost Taqueria is at the corner of Grand and Grove. I really recommend it, especially the brunch. Pretty much all the brunch entrees are under $8 - chilaquiles, huevos mexicanos, pozole, etc. It's BYO so if you want your mimosa you have to bring the champagne.

Good tacos during the week too - especially the carnitas and nopales.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 01:07 (twenty years ago)

Rosemary won at bingo the first time I went and the old people were crazy happy for her, although they did check the board extra carefully in case she was mistaken, you know how bad those young whipper-snappers are with the finer points. RZ took us out for creeps at Madame Claude's on her winnings, it was very nice of her -- and delicious!

Oh bah, Grand and Grove? I never get down there anymore.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 17:52 (twenty years ago)

Taqueria is okay, but excepting the flan, not great.
I've been all up on wild fusion lately; the nicest sushi bar in JC fer my money.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 17 February 2006 01:15 (twenty years ago)

Hurting 2, Saturday, 9 June 2007 03:46 (eighteen years ago)

As disappointing as Jersey City is in terms of music, nightlife, etc., the food situation has become really good.

Within walking distance of my place now I have very good Vietnamese, taqueria Mexican, Italian deli, and decent Greek, Cuban, and falafel/shawarma, all cheap, plus a couple of good coffee places, an excellent tea shop, and two mid to higher price-range places I like (Marco & Pepe, Madame Claude). One PATH stop away (Journal Square) there are a bunch of good Indian restaurants, both Northern and Southern, as well as the Egyptian fish place, and in the other direction (by the waterfront) there are a couple of very good, not-too-expensive sushi places. I don't really like the one thai place near me, but another one is about to open a few blocks from my apartment.

Hurting 2, Sunday, 10 June 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

The area from Grove Street to the water is getting more and hideous every day. I kind of assumed as more money poured into the area they'd at least build nicer buildings, but the whole thing just looks like a mid-level finance worker storage area (which I guess is what it is) - like I expect the buildings to be full of cryo-freeze compartments instead of actual dwellings.

JERSEY CITY (CN) - Parents say an Alcorr Transit bus driver showed hardcore pornography to 28 preschoolers on a field trip to the Land of Make Believe. Apparently it was inadvertent, but it continued "for several minutes" until the driver responded to "the screams and shouts of the parents."
The preschool, PRR Corp., says it hired Alcorr to take 28 children, ages 3 to 8, on a field trip. Apparently the bus driver watched the movie while the kids and parents were at the park, then left it on after the children returned for the ride home.
"As the bus was traveling, the children and adults were subjected to the graphic images and sound of said hardcore pornographic movie," according to the complaint in Hudson County Court. "The passengers were subjected to this for several minutes before the driver turned it off as a result of the screams and shouts of the parents.
"As a result of this incident, numerous parents removed their children from plaintiff's preschool, causing plaintiff a severe loss of income. Further, as a result of word of the incident spreading throughout the community, plaintiff suffered numerous cancellations in its enrollment and a great decrease in the number of applications for future enrollment, resulting in a severe loss of income."
Plaintiff is represented by Lonny Hirsch.
