Martin says he’ll address Canadians on sponsorship on Thursday
OTTAWA (CP) — Prime Minister Paul Martin will make an extraordinary nationally broadcast address to Canadians on Thursday on the sponsorship program and the paralysis in Parliament.

PS for the non-Canadians who might be interested:

Opposition pounds Liberals over Martin decision to bypass House
OTTAWA (CP) — The Liberal refrain “wait for Justice John Gomery” did nothing Thursday to quell opposition outrage in the House of Commons after Prime Minister Paul Martin chose to bypass his critics and speak directly to Canadians.
Allegations by a former Quebec Liberal party chief about Liberal interference in appointing judges provided fresh ammunition for Martin’s critics.
Benoit Corbeil, who is scheduled to testify at the sponsorship inquiry, is quoted in published reports saying said fake Liberal party “volunteers” were given cash, contracts, sponsorship deals and judicial appointments in exchange for working on election campaigns.
Deputy Prime Minister Anne McLellan called the allegations “serious and disturbing.” She said if they are found to be true, the actions are worthy of universal condemnation.
But her response ended with what has become a steady Liberal refrain in the House: . . . “which is why Mr. Justice Gomery needs to be allowed to finish his work”.
Conservative Leader Stephen Harper chided the absent prime minister for scheduling a nationally broadcast statement for Thursday evening to address Canadians directly about the sponsorship scandal.
Harper says Martin should be standing in the Commons to make his remarks, instead of issuing a statement from his den, “like some kind of fugitive leader.”
The prime minister has taken the highly unusual step of bypassing Parliament and speaking directly to voters with a broadcast appearance at 7:02 p.m. ET.
Last year he appointed Gomery to head an inquiry into the now-disgraced sponsorship program that saw millions of dollars go to Liberal-friendly advertising firms for little or no work.
Just hours before he was to deliver his extraordinary address, Martin said it’s important that he speak directly to Canadians about the scandal.
“I think it’s a question of accountability, of responsibility,” Martin said after a cabinet meeting.
His staff has said he has no plans to announce his resignation or call an election.
Martin aide Melanie Gruer said there will be two statements — seven minutes in English, nine in French — both with the same content.
She said they are being pre-recorded so they can play simultaneously on the main networks.
The prime minister said earlier Thursday he’ll also speak about getting things done in a Commons made fractious by the daily dose of scandal coming from the Gomery inquiry.
The speech was originally scheduled for 7:45 p.m., but was moved up at the request of the networks, the Prime Minister’s Office said.

Huk-L, Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

Wow. Well, "extraordinary" isn't exactly the word I would have used.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

It is outside the ordinary, though, surely?

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

How is anybody going to understand the announcement if they play the French and English versions simultaneously?

Nemo (JND), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

Those bastards at the U.N. will understand.

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Thursday, 21 April 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

Unless we have an election before that.: was it to my comment? I know it can happen before that but the thing is people are annoyed by elections, so now he look like his thinking is more mature , wanting the people to vote when they are in the know

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Thursday, 21 April 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

Seriously, no matter what the Gomery commission comes up with, in ten years, people are going to look back on this like they do on the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky scandal. In short: much ado about nothing.

The "issues", (nobody in or out of parliament knows what they are anymore) are taking a backseat to political wrangling with all sides endlessly repeating the same talking points in order to pimp their own sorry asses.

POXY FULE

Jack Layton: everyone is so busy stoking the fires of the sponsorship scandal in parliament, that the Liberals don't have time to fight the forest fires in BC! Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha, and they say I'm a smug person.

Sym Sym (sym), Thursday, 21 April 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

The comment was meant for MIR, Sébastien.

I don't know if it's "much ado about nothing" tho. I think we're all underestimating, in the rest of Canada, the impact this is having in Quebec. I'm frightened to think of the damage to federalism it's having there.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 21 April 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if it's "much ado about nothing" tho.

Perhaps that statement was too strong. I do think that it hindsight, we won't view this as nearly as big a deal as we do now. We'll view it the way we view the Lewinsky scandal -- i.e. as a relatively minor scandal blown up huge by other parties who don't give a crap about "accountability" and "letting Canadians know the truth", they just want to do anything they can to wrangle power for themselves after years of not being able to grasp national power in any other way.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 21 April 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

If Quebec is still in Canada in 20 years - sure, not a big deal. It is being blown out of proportion but what results from that is what's important.

'Unstable political enviroment' doesn't usually refer to federalists. With Quebec's wonderful handling of health care you'd think they'd want to hang on to what hospitals they already have.

"Quebec's wonderful handling of health care", right, as if we are worse than others (are we? I would like to see some comparative charts or something): health is a problem because it's an issue where there is always unlimited needs for limited ressources; there is bound to have complaints.

Even a few right-wing columnists have mentioned it.
This sorta thing woulda never happened on Jean Chretien's watch. He woulda yelled at someone long enough and said something bafflingly threatening and terse, and people would say, "Oh, I understand now that Chretien led his party and friends to the graft trough not out of greed but out of a deep and profound love for humanity and universal daycare."

Paul Martin on the other hand, it's fun to watch the rich kid squirm.

This whole situation with Parliament is starting to piss me off.
I could live with or without Paul Martin but this unholy union between the Conservatives and the Bloc is starting to piss me off. Basically they're doing everything they can do to to disrupt things and are calling for an election based on the fact parliament cannot function. Before Thursday that is. When there's an actual confidence vote. When they might not be able to successfully stall things.
So in essence they're asking to dissolve parliament before something might actually get accomplished!
PLUS. The the conservatives still seem able to show up for one Commons committee. Just one - the committee debating same sex marriage - which we all know they just love. What a bunch of messed up priorities. AND if we have an election now the ONLY GUARANTEED winner will be the FUCKING BLOC.
Fuck one Stephen Harper.
