Huk-L, Friday, 6 May 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

(This is gonna sound a bit out of sorts, but suddenly I'm reminded of our own Chris V and his long desire now for kiddom with his wife. I hope he has good news to announce soon. :-) )

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Congrats! STL is a great place to have kids, Teeny; there's lots of cool and free stuff to keep them entertained. And be thankful you don't have to go through the third trimester during a hot St. Louis summer (oy, my wife can tell you stories).

I've always planned to call my kid "Phantom", but since it's unclear when, if ever, I'm gonna have one, you can take the name. It's a gift.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 6 May 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

The progress bar up top seems to suggest that your baby is the size of a flower. Does it up date as it goes along and the baby grows, like (baby's face on mobile phone) -> (baby's face on football) -> (baby's face on small turkey)?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 6 May 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

oh here's the pregnancy test story (on april 1 no less!)--

the test says it's SO EASY, you pee on a stick, and it gives you a symbol...

- if you're not pregnant
+ if you're pregnant

guess what I got?

haha, teeny, that sucks. did you redo it or just go to the doc?

(congrats again btw)

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 6 May 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

"WTF??? LOL U R PGZ"

For an unwanted pregnancy, that seems rather in bad form.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Friday, 6 May 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

I freaked out all day and then bought another DIFFERENT test and did it that night. I was already pretty sure. The second one said it would take two minutes to show the results and it took about 15 seconds, I must be chock full of preggo hormones.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 6 May 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

Heck, we went through 3 or 4 separate brands of pregnancy tests before we believed the results. Next time this is an issue, we're getting that new one that actually says "Pregnant" or "Not Pregnant" in plain English.

mike a, Friday, 6 May 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

yeah that's the one I got the second time. Digital! (Jeanne recommended it to me, I was all like OMG what do I do and she's like WTF it's april fool's day, get out and I'm like no really etc)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

I just read a fantasy book that described the sensatio of childbirth as feeling like you have to take the largest shit of your life. Is that at all accurate?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

sensatio? That sounds like fun!

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

believe it or not, when I was like five and asked my mom what it feels like to give birth, THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT SHE SAID.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

I just read a fantasy book that described the sensatio of childbirth as feeling like you have to take the largest shit of your life. Is that at all accurate?

Yeah, it's that kind of pressure. And then you get scared when you realize that the shit is gonna weigh at LEAST six pounds.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

Well, from my experience, it feels like an agonising pain low in the back. (I started to explain that thinking, then realised it would just make things worse.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

I'd be more scared that the shit is gonna start crying and sucking on me.

()ops (()()ps), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

You've clearly never taken a 6 pound shit.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

My mom said something to the effect of, "Well, you know the worst cramps you've ever had in your whole life? It's much much much worse than that."

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

I was actually referring only to the word "sensatio" and not the description that followed.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

You know the cramps you get when diarrhea is imminent? Those gut wrenching stomach cramps? Labor pains feel a lot like those. They just last longer and hurt more.

haha okay that figure wasn't really accurate after we got married. Apparently having a vacuum job in your ears is even worse than having kids!?! I can hardly believe that's the case, but then I only had the vacuum job. Hopefully soon I'll be able to compare.

Anyway, congratulations! :-)

yay! that is fantastic teeny! having just popped a small person out myself, i have to say that the pain is worth it. oh, and enjoy the pregnancy.......i still wish that i were pregnant sometimes when i am around a heavy object that needs to be lifted!

Emilymv (Emilymv), Saturday, 7 May 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

haha excellent! luckily so far I am having an enjoyable pregnancy, no morning sickness to really speak of. I hope you find time to post more, I'd love to hear how you're doing with Clementine!

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 7 May 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

You've got a child now, Emily - make her lift it!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 7 May 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

ha! it is about time that she started earning her keep. she is currently mastering the art of rolling over. which has caused some jealousy with the dog, who attempts to gain our attention by rolling over each time she does. poor baxter, it just isn't as thrilling when he does it. although i have to say he is much better at it.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Saturday, 7 May 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Old enough to crawl is old enough to dust the low furniture, right?

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 7 May 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

That wouldn't be obnoxious at all! I really like seeing photos of ILXers' kids.

Oh my goodness, it's Clementine!! I love baby-face expressions!!

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Saturday, 7 May 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

i was going to say that clementine sure is a pretty name but then i realized that henry fonda already said that at the end of "my darling clementine." but it is a really pretty name. maybe she'll take "clem" as a nickname like the girl in the movie?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 7 May 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

Congrats, teeny!

I'm scheduled for a C-section in 9 days, but I feel like my water could break ANY MINUTE. It just feels like he's ready to get out of there. He'll probably wait. I'm sure Scott will start a "we just had a baby" thread when it happens. If all goes well with both of us, we'll have kids more or less the same age! Cyber-playdate, anyone?

Maria :D (Maria D.), Sunday, 8 May 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

Make that 8 days according to the ILX date.

Maria :D (Maria D.), Sunday, 8 May 2005 02:14 (twenty years ago)

That's right! I had forgotten new small one was due. :-) Hope all is well leading up to that, I assume you're a bit less nervous than before given this is number two.

Teeny, I'm so happy for you! YAY! A boy!

I'll be finding out in about three weeks. But alas we won't be giving away the gender to anyone (unless I blab of course). Everyone's convinced I'm having a girl. Why I don't know. My belly's growing slightly but only on the left side. ha! I'm still worried. As my gyno said I would start to feel movement (but need not worry if I didn't), I am now worried cause I don't feel it yet. I realize it's much too early but ah I'm a constant worrier. :-)

nathalie sans denouement (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

YAY ON THE GREAT NEWS, TEENY!!!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

I have a home movie of my mother, pregnant with me, holding a pink outfit up to the camera. She shakes her head (no sound on these movies) and throws it over her shoulder. She then picks up a blue outfit, shakes her head again, and then tosses it away to the side.

Finally, she holds up a yellow outfit. She smiles and then makes the outfit do a little dance in front of the camera.

Not knowing the gender of your child may have been charming back in the day, but I can easily see the advantage to not having to come up with two wardrobes, two names, two sets of anxieties....

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

oh man I dunno nicka, I wanna be prepared for a natural childbirth but if circumstances dictate that I need some heavy meds and/or a c-section, so be it, whatever. I don't think you can plan a childbirth, you can only be as prepared as you can manage. Poor mr teeny is kinda squeamish, I'm more worried about him.

oh, nath, that's funny about the asymmetrical growth, I kinda notice that sometimes on me too. I'm only getting kicked on my right side so far! And I started feeling movement very very early. And the movement is so small at first, it's easy to miss. At today's ultrasound, the technician kept poking at the baby, trying to get him to move, and he was having none of it (even though he was kicking up a storm in the waiting room). We got to see his little mouth open and close though, he looked like the Cryptkeeper.

My last ultrasound was amazingly clear. It's the latest machine, I think, so everyone's amazed at the details. We immediately thought of Geiger (sp?) because it resembles his style. hah! I do feel something, but I'm not sure if it's really movement. But I saw that he/she's moving around, so I'm happy.

Ned, Kerr came up with Nedwyna for my baby. I don't think so but heck maybe for a second name? ;-)

How're you feeling, teens?

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 23:14 (nineteen years ago)

Still feeling great, thanks! Honestly I think I might prefer being pregnant to not overall--I've had no mood swing issues and it's really nice not having a period. I do miss wearing cute clothes though. But I was so nervous about pregnancy making me miserable, it's been a pleasant surprise.

The baby is superactive and I really enjoy feeling him move, part of me wishes I could just tote him around in my belly forever. I'm sure I'll be wanting to get him out in a few weeks though. I can't believe my due date is only 7 weeks away. Also I have gained 40 pounds! But you can't really tell, I'm carrying way out in front and have only put a little of that weight on my ass. That's what mr teeny says anyway. He's been great, he's excited and supportive and even watched the scary video in lamaze class last week.

even watched the scary video in lamaze class last week.

Did you see the actual delivery? I saw a program on delivery - both caesarian and natural - and it freaked me out. I of course realized that the baby has to be pushed through your vagina but actually SEEING it on a screen. Eek. :-) My gyno thinks I'll probably have a natural delivery which is fine with me. :-)

We attended one lecture about delivery and breastfeeding but the next one is up for the 27th of december, a mere two weeks before my delivery. If all goes as planned. heh. The midwife was funny:" Don't have any romantic expectations about the first few weeks!" She was also adamant about breastfeeding and only keeping the baby for three weeks in your bedroom. After that it's out of the room and into her/his babyroom.

My baby's hyperactive as well. It has a sleep cycle which is mostly sleeping during hte day and being awake at night. Every few hours it'll start kicking and moving about. My husband and I have a *feeling session* every night: we play some music, put a light on my belly and then wait for the baby to move.

I already gained about 20 pounds which is a bit much. :-( I love being pregnant. I already start mourning the day s/he'll pop out. But not really, I wanna see our baby. :-)

People lay down all kinds of laws. Don't be bullied. Our babies slept in a bassinet right beside our bed—I don't remember how long, but longer than that. They turned out fine. After all, most people on the planet don't have a separate room for the baby.

baby i'm waiting (cis), Sunday, 11 December 2005 23:51 (nineteen years ago)

2 am Thursday morning wake up with some pretty good contractions.
5 am they start getting close together, wake mr teeny up, we sit around for a while, they start getting further apart. He calls in to work anyway to say he's not going to come in.
11 am contractions have pretty much stopped, go to previously scheduled dr appt at the hospital, he confirms I'm not in labor, go home, take nap.
4pm sit up in bed, water breaks. Leap out of bed before a drop hits it, yeah! It's an unbelievable amount of fluid, it just keeps coming. I stip off my long underwear and stuff a towel between my legs before I put on sweat pants, it almost lasts all the way to the hospital. (They always want you to come in asap when your water breaks because the risk of infection goes way up 24 hours afterward if you haven't delivered in that time.)

Here the timeline gets a little fuzzy, we get to the hospital around 5 maybe (it is snowing and rush hour of course), they check me in, confirm that my water's broken, get me all hooked up to an IV and get me up to my labor and delivery room. The contractions are about five minutes apart, they hurt but it's not too horrible. Because my water has already broken, they don't want me moving around a bunch. Since I can't move around and deal with the pain that way, there's not a lot of upside to me going through this w/o pain relief (which I wasn't really planning on anyway but hey anything's possible)...I wait until I think the time is right (a couple of hours of contractions) and then request the epidural. I'm only at about 2 or 3 centimeters dilated at this point, but apparently that's far enough along to get an epidural.

I'm glad I went through some contractions unmedicated because it gave me a really good idea of how everything was working in there. But indeed the epidural is an incredible thing, they gave me the perfect amount of painkiller. I really couldn't feel anything unless I was really concentrating. They gave me a bit of pitocin to make sure the labor didn't stall and then checked my progress every so often. Again, the timeline is fuzzy, but I was at 4 cm for a while and getting concerned about lack of progress, and then all of a sudden I started feeling some new pressure--I mentioned it to the doc, he checked me out and said I was fully dilated and ready to go! I pushed for about an hour and a half and only felt pain for the last couple of pushes. No episiotomy but I did have a little tear, easily stitched up, pretty remarkable given the size of the baby and that he was my first. Recovery has been going well also. It was a remarkably easy and enjoyable experience, helped by having an awesome husband and a great doctor and nurse to help me through it.

We named him Louis (french pronunciation like king louis, it's a family name), and he was born a little after midnight on the ninth, 9 pounds 3 ounces, 22.5 inches long.

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Monday, 12 December 2005 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

So the key question -- is he one of those handy babies that actually sleeps through the night?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 12 December 2005 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

Hah! I doubt it: My baby - still wrapped inside my belly - is mostly awake in the middle of the night. Then again my husband was apparently a very good baby: sleeping almost the whole night after a week or three! Can you imagine! I hope our baby inherits this habit. :-) I only screamed and cried when I was hungry.

Teeny, you and Louis look so DARLING. I wish I could pinch your baby's cheeks. :-) He has lots of hair!

Your delivery sounds just plain amazing! I hope mine goes as easily. :-) I'm tempted not to take an epidural but I think, if I don't wanna murder my husband, I better take all the drugs I can take. heh.

Mr. Mom was my favorite movie as a kid. I have probably seen it over 100 times. "My Wobby!"

ENBB, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 18:19 (seventeen years ago)

We have the Mr. Mom DVD on the tour bus. It's one of the best movies ever. It's set in Michigan, where I'm from. Michael Keaton gets laid off from the auto industry and basically has to become the woman of the house, and it's just the most hilarious, wonderful, heartwarming thing. John Hughes, who wrote the script, created an entire feeling of America. You'll notice in his movies this upper-middle-class East Coast or Midwest thing. It's a really particular vibe, and it's so good, man.

Babby is a shower of blood! I keep making these babbies that are blood! You cannot hold them. They have short gestation period. They are a disappointment to my parents who don't want to see anymore photos of the dozens of baby I have made. This is weird.
