Aaron A., Tuesday, 17 May 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

I choose either Jel or Pashmina or maybe Dave Q

Aaron A., Tuesday, 17 May 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

jeanne or teeny

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

cindy williams permafrost (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Jeanne no doubt.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Dan, of course.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Probably Ally.

cozen, spencer chow.

N_RQ, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

A short check indicates that my definition of cool is sufficiently expansive to be useless.

If you mean standard Fonz/Jedi Knight cool, though, it has to be Tombot.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

g-kit (g-kit), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

in the pictures he posts Tuomas allways looks like he is doing something interesting with a bunch of people. I think that makes him pretty cool

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Le coolness supreme: Suzy. Very-close runners-up: MasonicBoom, Di(e).

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and also Ramosi/Le Coq. This is why I hate making lists, I always leave too many things out.

Leon Federline (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

oh yes! tep! and lauren and ned as well!

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Actually LeCoq is a really good choice too.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

(The idea that anyone could name me as cool is truly astounding. But terribly flattering. :-) Thanks!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Sarah McL, both Kates, Roxy, Jeanne, Luna, Teeny, Gygax, Huck, Archel, Lauren.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

I want to add Dee to my list too!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

aw! such love! These threads still make me feel weird though, I don't like picking favorites. I hang out around here precisely because it would be hard to pick a favorite, I've gotten ridiculously close to some of you considering it's all ones and zeros.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

I don't know really, I think probably lots of different parts of different people.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

cindy williams permafrost (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

this thread is so not cool.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

do you have a "bad cool" list, archel?
Um, kind of. More of a 'scary cool' really. But I'm not saying who's on that...

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

all the lurkers duh! ;-)

nathalie's baby (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

it's okay Teeny, I don't actually like "cool" people. ;)

(J/K obv.)

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

I was describing Lauren the other day and the word cool featured three or four times, something like "at first she's almost intimidatingly cool, but then she's just cool cool. She's really cool. In a good way".

The only other person who I can remember off the top of my head for whom the tag "cool" is utterly apposite is of course Geeta.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Well, I like them

Aaron A., Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Also, people who I envy/admire/want to be like, secretly or otherwise: Pash, Tombot, Jocelyn, CJ the Unruly (who would be Queen in any ranking of ILX by coolness), Nabisco, Archel, Mark Grout, Nick & Sarah, Gem, Cis, Scott & Maria. Probably lots of others too.

diedre mousedropping and a quarter (Dave225), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

lauren too is really suave. except when crossing the street, flailing her arms screaming "ahhh run eeeek", which is also what im like when there are bees around.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

Also, Mr. Tracer Hand and Nabisco! And Scott and Maria. I'm hopeless at this, I think almost everyone here is so cool.

Leon Federline (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

omg i hate bees! there was a gigantic (like grown to abnormal size by irradiation gigantic) one menacing people on an outdoor train platform the other week and i almost jumped into the ditch to get away from it.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

I don't have a personal conception of cool (this probably explains rather a lot about me) but I guess maybe Madchen and Cathy are quite cool, whatever that means. I would trust them to keep me right on things that I suppose would matter to me if I were in any way bothered about being cool, if that makes sense. I think I may be confusing cool with stylish, but hey, whatever...

Plenty of cool people mentioned, however:

Archel has the coolest real name on the planet.

kelsey needs to post more, at least in threads I read. Or get a livejournal or something.

Jordan is the king of the Midwest and of brass bands.

jewelly is intermittently cool with bouts of disappearance.

Most of the other folks I'd list have either been named enough already or are good enough friends that it would sound more like a list of the people at my lunch table.

I have no idea what my conception of cool is, but it probably involves glasses and books.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

i get the sense that in real life you're chilling in corners, clocking everyone comin your way, nothing fazes you, not even the dude stepping to you with a blade. then you sorta grab his arm, stick his OWN KNIFE in his throat and go back to enjoying your miso soup.

on ILX, it's another matter. xxxpost

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

I've been trying to work out an answer, or knowing me a list of answers, to this. I think my problem is I lack a conception of what cool is, which is why I can't quite select anyone, or by loosening my vague notion just a touch I could select about 50. I am sure it comes as a shock to everyone here that this middle aged man doesn't know what cool is.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

It's the "personal conception" thing. Fonzie Cool on most people comes across like that episode of the Osmonds where Donny put the leather jacket on and sang the song about being a juvenile delinquent. I could draw up that list, I guess, but I like mine better.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 05:15 (twenty years ago)

hell, i'm a geek who makes threads about video games, fat bees, and wendy's frostys. why would anyone care what i thought was cool?

i wanna mention Oliver Reed, but he hasn't posted much in the last 6 years, so i guess he doesn't count.

kingfish maximum overdrunk (Kingfish), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 05:21 (twenty years ago)

How does everyone saying nice things about other people "bring out the worst in ilx", Marcello? There hasnt been a bad word on this thread. I'm not being sarky, I honestly dont understand.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 05:27 (twenty years ago)

I understand what he means, actually. a thread like this is bound to exclude people who make valuable contributions to ILX and might leave some feeling like, "Wow I interact with these people all the time on here and I don't get mentioned?" I don't think anyone would feel totally shitty when they don't get namechecked but there might be that brief "Well okay, thanks for nothing, guys" thought.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 05:31 (twenty years ago)

No it's to do with this fucking ILx hivemind and let's lick each other's arses until our tongues are browner than Scratchy after bing blown up one time too many and we're so fucking great and everyone else is fucking wrong and worthless whereas we're just a bunch of fuck-ups otherwise we wouldn't be here in the first place. Own up to that and stop thinking ILx is the Bloomsbury set or something.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 05:38 (twenty years ago)

"bing blown up one time too many"?

clearly that was freudian.

I speak of this thread in particular really, which unlike the other ones I know you're thinking of, has been pretty casual and light hearted. Or was. :/

g e o f f (gcannon), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 06:09 (twenty years ago)

Actually Marcello is 1000 X OTM, but despite knowing someone strange like me wouldn't make it, I still thought I must mention people like Rosemary on here. I mean hello, have you seen her sexXxy picz? She is underrated, and yes this was just a "fun pastime" (that we've done a zillion times before, with all the same people naming all the same people, again and again....sometimes I begin to wonder that those ilxors who never take habitual long-term breaks from this board, like me and a few others I know - barring the office-job addictiont hing - must truly have little social involvement / real life friends aside from on here...and this is only confirmed when I see their profiles on say, friendster or myspace, and 75-85% of their "friends" are...other ilxors. But ya'll probably deep down already _know_ you're not really cool if only people on a message board think so and no one you interact with that ya haven't met on the internet...as you're reminded of this daily. =) So I guess this is all just a l0ser-geek mutual admiration s0cietee).

So, yes, we have too many self-congratulatory threads. Um, why can't anyone have a problem on that despite being congratulated themselves? Marcello isn't being contradictory here.

What Geoff said, Vic, in a nutshell.

I may simply run across you in the wrong threads, which is neither of our faults, but nearly every time I see you post, you're bitching that someone was nice to someone who isn't you -- and you're usually being hysterical about it, as though you want to yell at people and have them coddle you. That sort of bullshit is irritating in a child, and beneath contempt in a putative adult.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 07:59 (twenty years ago)

*rides motorcycle out of ilx*

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:01 (twenty years ago)

I don't think ILX is cool! I post here, and I like it (sometimes), and I like my fellow posters, but I don't think that it's my personal conception of cool! And even after posting regularly for a year not making anybody's list because of a lot of 'circle-jerkery' people saying their interweb-friends are cool (understandably, on one hand) and actual real-life coolness for which I don't qualify (on the other) doesn't offend me! But Vic's 'loser-geek-mutual-admiration-society' does seem like a funny way of parsing this thread so far, and not an entirely inappropriate one. It's not meant to insult anybody, but it does throw into relief the silliness of the topic. That's all I mean. I don't want to be a raving shitstain.

Remy (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:02 (twenty years ago)

Isn't "Tep" a pompous little roadsweeper?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:03 (twenty years ago)

That's all I mean. I don't want to be a raving shitstain.

Oh, that was a response to Marcello and his "everything people say when I bitch about them confirms what I'm bitching about, everyone's fat in my funhouse mirrors" routine. I didn't realize you had misread that, I apologize.

"Tep" (ktepi), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

no, i'm not taking offense to anything! i don't have anything personal at stake here at all (hint hint). [whoa xpost i'm not taking this against you either, as some are, i'm not taking any sides here, forget it]

it's interesting, is all. whenever you get people talking abt online communication (ugh i hate that word), the immediate response is nearly always something like yours, "man ppl need to get out of the house."

true enough as far as it goes. but the net has a strong presence of distrust seemingly built into it.

g e o f f (gcannon), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:08 (twenty years ago)

But we ARE all losers who need to get out of the house/office/call centre DON'T YOU SEE JUST FACE UP TO IT THEN WE'LL ALL BE HAPPY AND HONEST.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't have put it as harshly as Tep, but I find it funny that every time one of these threads (which I personally find fun and light-hearted - and it's not because I'd always get mentioned on them, since I don't) get started, one of the few usual suspects shows up and says ILX is a big ol' circle-jerk and should rot in hell. If you hate it so much, why don't you just leave instead of ruining it for everyone else?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:12 (twenty years ago)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:14 (twenty years ago)

marcello, whatever i need to face up to, or be honest about, does not and will not involve you in any way.

"product of a discourse" heh reread yr notes, that's not even an insult.

g e o f f (gcannon), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:15 (twenty years ago)

?!??

I am shocked since I think you both are reading too much into these things...my point was that look, Marcello is still validly making a point that we have too many of these threads, and he's not being contradictory in what he said, despite being listed here. I wasn't listed here but feel the same way, despite fun with these threads by listing Rosemary etc -Jesus! I swear I haven't put that much thought into this in the way you have, as in the back of my mind I was thinking of what I'm going to write in my Crash,/i> ost the whole time...sorry if it was incoherent, or badly expressed, but my post up there was not meant as a slight against anyone geez!!

Look it took me over an hour to simply post my Crash review...thats all I've had on my mind since coming back at midnite from that film. Go ahead and call this "acting" - I didn't even know all his happened on this thread sice Remu IMed me and pointedi t out to me, and he can attest to that.

Tep, if you want to think of me as some sort of spoiled orange screaming and demanding for attention, that's your prerogative; I've thought of you as an asshole for a long time anyway since you've gone out of your way to disrespect my beliefs on here, but I promised myself I'd remain civil. You can think whatever you like at this point, but it just amuses me that anyone would believe that I care for people to "coddle" me or that I'm ever "hysterical" on here - all the real friends I've made from ILX, such as Chaki, could tell you that I try to stay away and spend as little time on here as I can!!@ I usually blame Ned and his FAPs for dragging me back in, but they're just the trigger; it's usually my own fault. I ultimately see Ilx as a good place to discuss ideas, such as on music, film etc, and wish I could discuss spiritual things on it too, but I don't think I've dipped too many times into trying to use it to gain valdation or anthing. buto f course, some of my posting history might indifcate otherwise, as I've been unemployed a lot in the past two years and god knows what thread you might be referring to.... I've posted a lot on here when I was depressed and emotional, and you aren't even mentioning what you're referring to...

But I'm being too accomodating in my attempt to be objective. I shuld just be telling you to fuck off, and fuck objectivity. It's your misunderstanding, dude.

FWIW I want to add Arthus and Gale to my list. I miss Gale!

Vichitravirya XI, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:15 (twenty years ago)

No, but I don't footnote when I say nice things, either. Sometimes specific incidents stay in memory, sometimes they don't. I don't know if details would serve any real purpose anyway.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:27 (twenty years ago)

Can't we all just click HERE and respond to my thoughts on the film that i've been concentrating on that took me so long to type, rather than this thread which i clicked on in the middle of writin all that since i needed a break? i feel like i've unleashed a storm unwitingly!

Or okay - Tep maybe the solution should just be that i should step back from this thread, if i've inspired bad feelings and people / you R getting defensive. i didn't mean to ruin anyone's fun, i was just saying i agree with Marcello....chill, people, chill. it's a thread about being cool after all. =0 =)

[[I have other thoughts on my mind now...like how I'm going to get up in 5 hours for work, why i spent even 7 dollah on a movie when i haven't paid my cell bill yet, why am i still wearing my shoes (well i know the why to that one - i was so excited to post a review to this film that since i came home, i haven't done anything but plopped down in front of the computer and attempt to write my insta-reaction on it) ]] maybe this can derail into a TITTWIS thread at some point... anyway

seriously. sometimes ilx really annoys me, sometimes it doesn't. if i'm not enjoying it, i don't read it. remind me what purpose is served by having a mean-spirited go at people who are enjoying it, please.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:29 (twenty years ago)

Man, in the perfect world where I would commute to work in my flying car, dipping and weaving amongst megalithic skyscrapers, the sun shining as robots eat war, plague and famine below and shit broadband, these kind of threads would be great. We'd all have a chance to big up those people we admired on the board and maybe recieve some ourselves, providing a lift.

However, we don't live in a perfect world and there's a lot of kids here and on boards across the internet with a couple of burned out transistors who will start spitting unholy ichor at anybody who compliments another person, seeing it as some kind of massive internet circlejerk conspiracy. Bitches got their problems and the mud gets tracked in here.

I don't think we're ever going to get a thread without people getting pissed off at people complimenting each other, so we either grin and bear it or just don't start these kind of threads.

I prefer the former - perhaps a permanent, ongoing thread for bigging each other up might be a solution. The temptation to troll might subside after a while.

Marcello had one good point, however...

...stop thinking ILx is the Bloomsbury set or something.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

Have to add...But Vic's 'loser-geek-mutual-admiration-society' does seem like a funny way of parsing this thread so far, and not an entirely inappropriate one. It's not meant to insult anybody, but it does throw into relief the silliness of the topic. That's all I mean. - Thx Remy and that's all _I_ meant...and NO I would never set myself apart from internet loser-geekdom - I MEAN COME ON, THAT WAS MY LIFE!! AFTER %$^&@% HAPPENED etc.

I hope I got the italics down cold this time.

Vichitravirya XI, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

How about starting a self-congratulatory board, and whoever that doesn't like these things can ask to have themselves banned from it, and thus removing the temptation?

This is a serious suggestion here.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

Damn I even got the bold down. I rock. It's funny but for all my addiction I've never tried to do fancy things on here and am happee if I can even do the most b4sic html. okay bedtime.

Vichitravirya XI, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:41 (twenty years ago)

We can't end ILX! It's circumventing all our shutdown protocols! It almost seems...intelligent!

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:41 (twenty years ago)

I am neither crabby nor mean. Just honest.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:41 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, and I think Tep's way cool, because he spends his time doing things I would like to do and knows an awful lot about that particular stuff.

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:43 (twenty years ago)

Marcello, it must be your distorted version of the truth that makes you so mean.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:44 (twenty years ago)

Remember ILX, if you don't like it, don't post, and that includes responses to complaints about the nature of threads on those same threads.

Your caring, sharing moderator (blueski), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:50 (twenty years ago)

Aww come on Stevem, you know how much fun it is to try to reason with Marcello!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

Ahhh, I love when innocent questions unleash the ILX BEAST!

Baaderonixx (it must be a camel) (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

nobody has told me how OTM i was with my suggestion just yet.

you bunch of dumb-fuck nerdy bastards.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

Temptation: "the desire to do or have something that you know you should avoid."

For the third time:

WHAT BIT OF THE PHRASE "THUS REMOVING THE TEMPTATION"

DON'T

?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

Erm, hang on, nope, please can you explain it again?

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:01 (twenty years ago)

I can understand your temptation to read ILX, but I can't understand the need to post to threads simply to bitch about. It doesn't feel like a temptation, more like something you enjoy.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:01 (twenty years ago)

Get one willpower.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:01 (twenty years ago)

Did I mention Liz is also the coolest?!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:02 (twenty years ago)

Uh, actually, I don't get it.

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

I mean, it's a helluva temptation if it causes you to post stuff like this, knowing that you'll only get shitted on.

(x-post)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

So you admit that your function, as an ILx collective, is to shit on people who expose your "community" for the fraudulent lynch mob it actually is. Congratulations.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

Aww Marcello, come on, give me a hug!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:12 (twenty years ago)

my suggestion is STILL otm.

none of you dickheads will admit it.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:14 (twenty years ago)

Now steady on missus... ;-)

(OBVIOUSLY an x-post)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

I can understand your temptation to read ILX, but I can't understand the need to post to threads simply to bitch about. It doesn't feel like a temptation, more like something you enjoy.

Good point, but the question 'Why did the person who started this thread start this thread?' must also be asked. Harmless fun? I'm a little sceptical to be honest, and I was oh-so-surprised to find they weren't logged in...

Of course being negative on these threads instantly paints you as just bitter about not being mentioned lots. I'll admit that thought crossed my mind too (Not only do I want everyone to like me, I want everyone to think I'm cool too...note I say THINK rather than TELL ME however), but I also know that me being me I'd be embarassed if I had been mentioned lots, and I wonder if these things occur to other people (surely they do?). So bitterness or embarassment, the only results of a thread like this?

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

Caring far too much about what people think shockah

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:21 (twenty years ago)

Ken C is of course the coolest of the cool, I was just too shy to say! *blush*

Now steady on missus... ;-)

Aww come now, no need to be bashful!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

i thought it was a) a bit of fun, b) a way of interrrogating how we imagine other ilx0rs as IRL entities, not just words on a screen. i didn't think anyone would nominate me, but i wouldn't have been embarrassed if they had. it doesn't matter either way.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:24 (twenty years ago)

HURRAH PROBLEM SOLVED!

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

Threads like this always used to bother me as invariably I wouldn't get mentioned or I would get sympathy mentions etc & I know it's foolish to let it bother you, but sometimes it just does. However, having taken a massive step back from ILX, it really doesn't matter in the slightest what some person I've never met, let alone spoken to, thinks about me. There are a couple of ppl on ILX who kind of know me & that I interact with, but nobody really knows me to the extent I would class them as a really good friend who'd be there for me no matter what. There are ppl on ILX who are totally "cool" imo, whatever "cool" is, that I have never met or spoken to. So why not say so? If they don't think the same, oh well, I'll cope!

x-post

Marcello, I knew you were a bid ol' softie all along, now come 'ere you!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

Ooer! :-)

(pulls curtains hastily across thread, Frankie Howerd-style)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:33 (twenty years ago)

I'll be purchasing new pants this week so I may go up a level of coolness, as for once in my life I will not be buying blue denim jeans shocker.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

Haha! Also, I'd like to add to my point that i still love interacting with certain ppl on ILX. All through my ILX sebatical I have always taken part in the TITTWIS thread because I am the twee!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

I was dead cool when I came out the house this morning. I had to wear my scarf and gloves and everything boom, and, as it were, boom.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:38 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't have thought it'd matter if you weren't mentioned, for people. Surely if anyone expected to be mentioned their answer to the question would be "me!".

I don't really think this thread was started nastily, I'd be surprised. It seems like harmless fun.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:41 (twenty years ago)

So you admit that your function, as an ILx collective, is to shit on people who expose your "community" for the fraudulent lynch mob it actually is. Congratulations.

No, I said this because you've done the same thing before, to similar response. One would assume you'd learn.

Then again, maybe that *is* how communities work. If someone would say to my group of friends "You are full of shit!", then maybe we'd at first try to understand his criticism. But if we'd thought that criticism wasn't exactly valid, and the same guy would return again and again to remind us how full of shit we are, yeah, sure we'd shit on him. That's hardly the same as being a lynch mob though.

If you manage to find a community which accepts *every* criticism, complaint, and mockery with open arms, then that is clearly the right place for you. Good luck in finding one!

I'm a lot happier telling people how cool I find them to their faces, though when it comes to you lot, I may never be able to, thanks to this nonsense. Thankfully, the 2 ILXors I hold highest in this regard haven't (and hopefully won't) post to this thread.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

I don't think this thread was started maliciouly either, and I don't think aaron a is exactly what you'd call yer anonymous troll poster, really.

I've been of a bunch of other interweb boards, and I haven't seen another one as good as this one. I don't think there's anyone here I'd actually avoid, and there's plenty of people I'd be delighted to meet irl.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

What's Tittwis?

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

"this is the thread where i say", the kind of ile-within-ile thing.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

nobody who posts to a message board can really ever achieve "cool." can you imagine humphrey bogart as an ilxor?

cindy williams permafrost (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

I was gonna pick some people but then decided to take the 'this thread is stupid as is all self-congratulatory, cliquey, points-scoring, might make them like me more if i mention them cynical misery-gutted bastard' approach. Yay!

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

humphrey bogart was not cool.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

I would like to take the opportunity here to wish Ste all the best with his new trousers.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

thanks Matt, it's gonna be an adventure as I've never bought cool pants before and don't even know what cool shops to go to. So I've assigned a fashion guru to come along with me. This could make or break me in the cool world.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

It's a pivotal point all right. But just so long as you stay calm I reckon it'll all work out for the best.

You know what, Marcello? This thread, if you read it carefully, was lighthearted fine fun until YOU WADED IN WITH YOUR SHITTY SHIT STAINED BITTER-BOOTS and fucked everyone over. You bitter, twisted, horrible old man. I have fucking had enough of reading your SHIT on this board. Do you think you're lonely? I'm not fucking suprised, the amount you bicker and moan and fucking carry on like a pork chop.

I found a tea shop last month, and have been buying lots of nice tea from there, some top draw Bangladeshi Assam and some equally tasty DarJeeling. Tea is great!

Tea is indeed great! And just as kissing leads to making love, so too does Darjeeling lead to Lapsang Souchong.

oh sorry wrong thread

moley, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

xpost: I like Yorkshire Tea for Hard Water areas. I also like their teacake and shortbread biscuits specially designed for dunking. Best thing ever to come out of Yorkshire.

Decaff tea - does it actually taste NICE?

The only people I've ever heard use that phrase are trayce and my girlfriend's mum.

moley, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

Four types of people on ILE then:

Type 1: Sees this thread as harmless fun, eagerly plays along by picking somebody, or more commonly, finding themselves unable to pick just the one and list a whole bunch of people to the point where it loses all meaning, all the while unconcerned about how the people they included or omitted feel about it.

Type 2: Thinks this thread is a terrible idea and decides to protest about it on the thread, instead of just answering the question, causing much ire among the Type 1s.

Type 3: Reads thread, rolls eyes but can't resist a smug self-righteous 'ha ha you lot are sad unlike me' or 'jesus you guys (are asshats) dig as this will make them seem much cooler than everyone else.

Type 4: Reads thread, rolls eyes, decides not to bother posting at all, continues to live a rich, prosperous life free of sin, passes through eye of needle to be showered by yet more riches.

And that's your lot, or did I forget one? Hey ho.

Professor Menklischer (blueski), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

I kind of fit into Type 1, but I totally care about how ppl feel about it.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

Well I guess you assume they'd be pleased and I'm sure you're right.

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

I meant more about the ppl that I didn't include!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

I only came to this thread to wish Ste luck with his trousers, I don't know if that counts. Type 3 maybe? I don't think anyone is an asshat, though.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

I just can't believe nobody mentioned the Noise Dudes.

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

**YOU WADED IN WITH YOUR SHITTY SHIT STAINED BITTER-BOOTS**

Yeah, Marcello - I've told you before, you've got to get rid of those shitty shit stained bitter boots. They're not cool. Try trainers or doc martens.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

Steve, you forgot the lot that don't open this thread. Personally I'm a bit of all types. Except the one you forgot to mention. duh. As much as I'd like to say I don't care, I always wish someone mentions me even though deep down I feel utterly uncool. (Thanks Youn!) But hey then I think: whatEVAH, cool is such a crazy concept, sth I've outgrown long ago. So still stand by my opinion: all the lurkers. There are those that are too cool to be cool, they know who they are. :-)

nathalie's baby (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

thank you.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

Steve, you forgot the lot that don't open this thread.

I'm not sure these people actually exist. Surely everyone who qualifies as 'on ILX'/reads it regularly enough will have a peek.

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

Type 5: People who opened the thread only to see how long it took before it devolved into fighting cos they had an hour to kill!

Regardless of where I or anyone else stands on this "internet-loser-circle-jerk" debate, two points that should be made:
1) The idea that "you guys are obviously uncool losers because you're on the internet to begin with!" is losing serious currency. This was a valid viewpoint just a few years ago, maybe, but seriously, who the fuck under 30 today doesn't heavily rely on email, read all the au currant websites, etc? It's not exactly unusual; if I say to a friend "Oh there's some dj thing I read about on a message board some of my friends might go to, we should go," no one raises an eyebrow.
2) The idea that ILXors are kind of an incestuous community with limited "real life" friends using MySpace and Friendster as proof is absolutely amazing to me--Vic, I love you to death, but you realize that a lot of people wouldn't have even considered getting MySpace or Friendster accounts if it wasn't for ILX threads? And only did it as a ha-ha and then kind of forgot about it? Why would you even think to search/invite your real life friends to something you kind of just considered a goofy temporary laugh? This is silly--when I havve seen ILX profiles and their friends are all ILXors, I wouldn't assume that means anything at ALL about a person.

That is all!

Allyzay do not obtain to make download of yours MP3 (allyzay), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Marcello - I've told you before, you've got to get rid of those shitty shit stained bitter boots. They're not cool. Try trainers or doc martens.

Or wash them, at least. And you can extract the bitterness by covering them with salt.

Starbar, yes, decaff tea is very nice - it tastes a lot like real tea (I can't usually tell the difference, except after drinking it I don't go spazzy).

Ste, have lucky trousers (I think you're cool, if this thread hasn't lost its sparkle, and I love your blog).

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

wait, is it me?

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

I'd recommend cheese and onion crisps with bitter boots, or ready salted if they're actually just a stout pair of shoes.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

*munches thoughtfully on morning bagel, notes where thread has gone over the last two hundred posts, raises eyebrow, leaves*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

I recall a conversation at a comics convention years ago among my friends.
Friend1: "You know, there are a lot more cool people at these things than there used to be."
Friend": splutters with laughter/outrage for some seconds, then says "Cool people don't even know that events like this exist!"

He was right, of course. Good thing ILX isn't like that, though.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

OK Let's test this....

me: "PETE! I'm filming a documentary for ILX!"
Pete: "Wha?"

And so, we have comprehensively proved nothing.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

Ally totally OTM.

I mean, I'll confess to being addicted to ILX (haha ... yeah), but the whole "why can't we admit we're all just a bunch of losers" bit seriously sounds like you are yourself seeking validation: "I consider myself a loser, or people have called me a loser, but it's okay if all these other people are losers, too." I'm sure there are people here whose only friends are ILXors (this played a role in AaronHz's meltdown, I'm sure), but there are also people who have pretty active social lives, for whatever that's worth. Personally, I never mentioned anyone on this thread, cuz I couldn't really narrow it down and then, when people just started naming random people they like (I agreed with Blount's point upthread), I just decided it was silly. And no one named me! The horror! :)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

What happened to AaronHZ? I was wondering where he had been.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

Tuomas go to the Aja/Dante board and mod forum if you really want to find out...

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

Yeah Ally otm, I was going to make the same points, but kind of didn't want to get sucked into the abyss here.

Basically along with what Ally points out as wrong is the assumption that ILX is some big mass of people, yet again, almost always an assumption by those people who assume (or pretend) they are not part of whatever ILX is.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

Ken C is tres cool.

Also, I don't think one need be a loser to be on ILX, although sadly some can be.

miele kitty (miele), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

I'd certainly like to try Penny Smith's Doc Martens...

miele kitty (miele), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

This thread deserves Marcello.

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

Holy shit, I didn't know about AaronHZ! So sad, he used to be a nice guy... Looks like he had a genuine mental breakdown.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

I've dealt with bipolar people before and it can be downright scary... I hope he gets better.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

love you to death, but you realize that a lot of people wouldn't have even considered getting MySpace or Friendster accounts if it wasn't for ILX threads? And only did it as a ha-ha and then kind of forgot about it? Yeah, this includes me...because of you! So okay, bad point of mine. I really kept getting all these real-live ppl asking "but how do you know so and so in ...Astoria?" and then i'd have to explain my message board thing, and so I purged like 46 of you in February, but then added you on myspace again.

Anyway I regret ever making that post on this thread...since I guess everyone misread its tone...I a) simply wanted to say Marcello isn't contradictory if he says we have too many of these threads and they're dummm even if he's listed here., b) didn't mean to exclude me from anything I was saying and c) was simply thinking of, in truth, exactly only one ilxors when I typed what I did in my paratheses...I shouldnt have even added PARANTHESES DAMN!!... but it wasn't meant to sound so negative, and I was trying to be somewhat ironic by it regarding the rest. Oh well. I failed at writing. I still don't think you should post on Ilx if you can't consider internet l0ser-whatever a term of endearment...this is the last time i'm saying sorry though 'coz honestly I didn't mean no harm and I'm late 4 work now so I'll come back during my break to bother ya'll with my geek addiction later! kisses!

PS -
I' think Aaron's recovery is inversely proportionate to how much time he spends online. I'm sure he'll get better as soon as we get rolling blackouts again here in Sunshine State

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Dadaismus already picked you, g-kit, so I'll come off the sidelines and I'll pick Dada.

I would have picked Stewart, but then I know he would come here and say "Cool? Moi?.

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Not necess. but if you give in and post you are clearly no longer a type 4. 3.5 maybe.

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

what about people who come here to give handy, practical suggestions about starting another board for these threads and generally being OTM about everything?

I'm this type 6 person basically! :-D

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

OTM twice in one thread, what are the odds ay????

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

Vic's been here for as long as I can recall,I'm surprised you've not crossed paths before

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure I have! I guess he was under another login name.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

vic has been around a lot longer than gear!

which thread did I post about thinking gear! was quite old?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

oops, I posted on this thread.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

I believe Vic's old login name was ... Vic.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

I would have named you, J, but I was trying to build up my indie cred by picking through antipodean underdogs. Plus I've met you, and the whole funny/entertaining thing about this thread was thinking about the difference between projecting cool on a board and actually being that way in life, which are two hugely different things for everyone apart from like Tracer; it seemed less masturbatory and more weirdly sociological. Unfortunately I post to ILX like four times a day while eating lunch at work, so I can't dredge up any particular personal feelings about the concept of being "internet-addicted losers." It's something I've only ever imagined about those people who wind up having mood-swingy emotional "relationships" with the board (ahem); everybody else, well, I just assume they're bored at work. I fucking wish I could get back to spending too much time on this thing -- I wouldn't always be so late with new album releases.

Also I think we all need to take steps to reclaim masturbation and mutual masturbation from their increasingly negative connotations. Some people pay money for that shit.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

Please don't allude to my infant when using the term "masturbation", nabisco. It's sleazy.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Own up, who's first action on seeing this thread was to do Ctrl + F and put their own name in? My shortest ever route to disappointment, obv.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

(Arf, Alex, that was the point! Not me-sleazy, but, ya know, earlier posters putting mutual-masturbation charges on e.g. people calling your baby cool, which is mostly just polite and friendly and true.)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

One person told me offline that he thought I was cool and I just thought he had an indefensibly absurd interpretation of the world. It didn't occur to me to search for my name - I'd have been astonished to find me cited as that. I am middle aged, balding, funny shaped, white, English, I wear a cheap suit to work - I mean, how many strikes does one get?

What does it matter if people get left out? Honestly? I don't see my name in this thread [not that I actively looked for it], but really, if people really do hate me I hope they'll tell me to my face. And if they do, so what? I've got thicker skin than to care what a few people on a message board think of me.

And so what if it's a big back-slapping exercise? Nobody's forcing anyone to read these threads.

If this thread has taught me anything, it's that Marcello gets worked up over nothing. He can spell 'arse' properly though, I'll give him that.

It occurred to me yesterday that becoming an "internet-addicted saddo" type might mean forgetting what it is that you do when they actually go out and socialize with people, which is that you pretty much just talk about each other half the time. Except that you talk about whoever's not there, and make fun of their recent behavior and clothing purchases. Since there's no behind-the-back here, we have to say nice things about one another, which seems less like circle-jerkery and more like not having as much of an opportunity to go out for a smoke and be all like "seriously, dude, what's the deal with that guy anyway?"

Au contraire mon brave, it is very kind of you to suggest otherwise but I am a Chartered Accountant and as such, by definition, I am the very epitome of everything that is un-cool.

I am the diametric opposite of "groovy", the living embodiment of everything that is not "funky".

I am so unfashionable that I would be in imminent danger of coming back into fashion, if only I was switched-on enough to pretend that I was being ironic.

Moosehead - 'Moosehead'

Sunrise, wrong aide of another day
Sky high and six thousand miles away
Don’t know how long I’ve been awake
Wound up in an amazin’ state

I can’t get enough
And you know it’s righteous atuff
Goes up like prices at christmas, this
Moosehead, you can call me
Moosehead, alright

Brained out, total amnesia
Get some mental anaeathesia
Don’t move, I’ll shut the door and kill the lights
It I can be wrong I must be right
All good clean fun
Have another stick of gum
Man, you look better already
Moosehead, remember me now
Moosehead, alright

Fourth day, five day marathon
We’re moving like a parallelogram
Don’t move, the mornin’s not a pretty sight
I guess, I’ll see you all on the ice

I should be tired, and all I am is wired
Ain’t felt this good for an hour
Moosehead, remember me now
Moosehead, alright

There are people on ILX whom I consider to be so cool that they intimidate me. Then there are people on ILX whom I consider to be "just cool enough", i.e. I would sorta like to be like them but not with the drawback that I could never really get to know them. I'm not going to name the people in those categories, though I'm fairly certain they already know who they are. I mean, I'm not exactly vague in my dealings with people, I don't think.

BTW, I'm so terminally uncool that any inclusion on any person's list herein contravenes the order of natural law. Sorry Pink; you'll just have to "want", not actually "include". ;)
