Hahah, imagine us in the Big Brother house.

2:39pm: Jim and Gaz discuss their latest musical ventures. Mikey and Adam are bemoaning their lack of creative drive. Gem is distracted by thoughts of her Copyright 101 lecturer, while Kate has second thoughts about teaching. Trayce is in the corner knitting goth mittens.

Being on a program like Big Brother would be like my personal vision of hell. There are times, many of them, when I crave to be shut away from the world and never again seen.

Edward I soooo agree with ye.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 9 June 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

Kate - ahaha really? Thats cool. It was my mum who got me onto black books too! She totally found out about it before me and was all "omg you have to see this its so funny!" which if you know my mum, is a bit WTF.

trayce you should live at the robot arms apts

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 9 June 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

It's totally spot on for my mum, she encouraged repeated viewings of the young ones when we were kids, however it was James I think who put me onto the Black Books tip.

You fondle my trigger then you blame my gun / Kate (papa november), Thursday, 9 June 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

This is my week so far:

- Dishwasher spewing water all over the flat
- 22 degree days
- Strange pushy woman at supermarket
- Me coming out of shell and pushing said woman's groceries everywhere
- Getting an HD for an assignment I didn't think was really very good
- Grandmother who should have died on Monday is still almost-dead
- Having a playfight with an real-life friend on another forum, only to have his little brother suddenly attack me for bullying his brother
- Completely borking up the first call I've had about a job in like a month

And there's a whole day left! What will happen next?

Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

What you got Kate? I hope it's nothing uncomfortable.

Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 9 June 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

Uhhh....stress related stomach upset I think....and I have assessment today that I in all probability won't be able to make. My parents had a massive fight last night, triggered by my father refusing to feed the dog because "You bitches are here to serve me".

You fondle my trigger then you blame my gun / Kate (papa november), Thursday, 9 June 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

[xpost] Fuck, not really :)

Is your dad like that, or was it a joke?

No, he's like that.

You fondle my trigger then you blame my gun / Kate (papa november), Thursday, 9 June 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

He's gone away for the weekend now though, so it's all good.

Still not sure what to do about my assessment though. I'm starting to think I'd be better off just dropping out and getting a job.

You fondle my trigger then you blame my gun / Kate (papa november), Thursday, 9 June 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

Can you finish it, then get a job?

That dad of yours sounds, um, cartoon btw.

Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 9 June 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

He's a cunt. I really wanted to stab him to death last night.

I'll have to finish it somehow, either that or work at Safeway for the rest of my life. I guess I might have to start looking for a sharehouse or something.

Once 'er indoors and I went to this new Indian restaurant. We were the only ones there, but the food was fantastic. When we tried to leave, the guy cornered us for like 20 minutes and tried to tell us he was giving us "intensive" [i.e. incentive] to go back, and "intensive" to tell all our friends about his restaurant, and that he gives this "intensive" to everyone. So we never went back.

Anyway, going to the gym.

i wonder how gaz is going on his day off

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 10 June 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

I have to work on monday.
Minus: it will be boring as all hell, I will probably have nothing to do, I have to start work at 8am (ugh), and will probably have to get a cab in as PT will be scarce.

Plus: it means I get the friday off instead which is a normal day, there will be nothing to do so I can read and stuff, I get to go home at 4pm instead of 5.

The Jaguar Who Sleeps At The Centre Of The World. (Mikey Bidness), Friday, 10 June 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

Nor can I. I mean, that's not blowing my trumpet, it's dead honest. I can write better than like 95% of the population [we all can].

I've got a good work history, good references, a range of skills, etc etc, but I can't even get first interviews. That's out of, what, hundreds of jobs I've applied for this year alone.

Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 June 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

haha Ian that's great! "Toilet Master"!

his ignorance is encyclopedic (haitch), Friday, 10 June 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I just remembered a few things about my old work.

Every time I tried to move out of what I was doing [highly highly specialised], I was blocked. Turned out the company did that to everyone.

In 2002 a few people in my department left, having been poached by another company, which closed down soon afterward. A year later they were back in my department because they couldn't get work anywhere else.

Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 June 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

What'd I do?

No, seriously, just pretend you rule and polish up a resume and flood companies with it. Read websites for companies and try to find someone moderately up the foodchain and hit them.

Works in teaching, works in publishing.

The Jaguar Who Sleeps At The Centre Of The World. (Mikey Bidness), Friday, 10 June 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

I have to ask Adam, what on earth are you actually doing if youre not even getting interviews? It sounds like you need to review your CV. Also, yeah like Mike said - cold call, sign up with recruitment agencies, and most of all - ASK FRIENDS. I have never gotten a job from seek or the paper in my life. Its a waste of time. Get in the side door, man.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 10 June 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

I'll definitely do it Mikey. Cheers.

Trayce: I dunno. My CV is brilliant, friends are useless, agencies are useless.

Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 June 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

Oh and the CV changes per job too, usually.

Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 June 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

But if you're not ever even getting an interview, you are doing *something* wrong. Dont get me wrong, I know youre talented - but either something in your CV immedietly goes "BBZZT" for some strange reason, or more likely, you're maybe going for the wrong kinda jobs?

xpost ah, well yeah the CV should of course.. im sure im telling you shit youre already doing but I find it strange you're having such trouble.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 10 June 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

This is also why things like LJ and IRC can be handy - you can throw a wide net over friendsoffriendsoffriends to get word out you want work in X.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 10 June 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

Don't be afraid to really push yourself as being totally shithot.

I lucked out, I wrote this really arrogant, cocky resume (even fuckin' appended the infamous lj icon as a photo Trayce) and got mad props from Heinemann.

The Jaguar Who Sleeps At The Centre Of The World. (Mikey Bidness), Friday, 10 June 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

something pretty basic (which i didn't always know, so maybe...?)is that employers tend to cull people pre interview based on having checkboxes for all the essential/desirable criteria. if you haven't addressed all of the things in the job description (i usually do this very formulaically ie heading detailing requirement, my experience) then you'll get culled.

sure you know this but hey.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 10 June 2005 02:24 (twenty years ago)

...of course, that won't work most of the time. Especially in the tech area, the being a cock mofo thing.

Searching for teaching work got me very much into making sure I detailed how I fulfilled the criteria. Working as a teacher doubly so, since I've sifted through piles of resumes deciding who gets a gig in my staffroom and hell, I chuck away any that have missed *any* of the criteria because there are PILES of them.

The Jaguar Who Sleeps At The Centre Of The World. (Mikey Bidness), Friday, 10 June 2005 02:30 (twenty years ago)

I'm not suited to the stuff I should be suited to, mainly because my last job kept us away from all the useful stuff. That's the specialised bit. Everything else is seen to be beneath me. So I can't even get shit jobs.

Trayce: This is also why things like LJ and IRC can be handy - you can throw a wide net over friendsoffriendsoffriends to get word out you want work in X.

Yeah, I just feel like I'm already going on about it too much.

Mikey: Don't be afraid to really push yourself as being totally shithot.

Mmmm. I'm not good at that :)

Jim: employers tend to cull people pre interview based on having checkboxes for all the essential/desirable criteria. if you haven't addressed all of the things in the job description (i usually do this very formulaically ie heading detailing requirement, my experience) then you'll get culled.

I've just found my iMac so much easier to use than any PC thus far. I've managed to do neater stuff.

The Jaguar Who Sleeps At The Centre Of The World. (Mikey Bidness), Friday, 10 June 2005 04:29 (twenty years ago)

That's because Macs are designed for very small babi ease of use.

You fondle my trigger then you blame my gun / Kate (papa november), Friday, 10 June 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

I found it by accident or by reading the manual, can't remember which.

Originally, even on highest speed setting, I had to pick up the mouse and drag it all the way along the desk like five times just to get the pointer to go from one corner of the screen to the other. Had to download a hack just to make the mouse speed acceptable. Or asseptable if you're a supernanny.

Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 10 June 2005 05:07 (twenty years ago)

You fondle my trigger then you blame my gun / Kate (papa november), Friday, 10 June 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

The latter, because there's no 'ecks' in the word. At least acceptable has 'acc'.

also if you press the 'ctrl' key while clicking (the extra ctrl key, not the apple one), it works exactly the same as a right button. alternatively you could buy the mac mouse that has two buttons.

True. Sarah McLachlan sings it that way on her second album. It bothers me quite a bit.

well, i guess alien sex fiend really WERE the happiest goths -- or at least nik fiend perhaps.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 11 June 2005 04:38 (twenty years ago)

Hahah :) I dont even know if Ive heard any ASF stuff. Probably have at clubs and just not known - that happens. The funny thing is, I dont really like a lot of "goth" music, tho that recent Skinny Puppy single with the hilarious breakdancing goths video clip I really liked.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 11 June 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

i wouldn't be the LEAST bit surprised if i own (and ENJOY) more goth rekkids than you do, trayce -- and i look about as NON-goth as a person can look (except for being kinda pasty ... and wearing dark suits).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 11 June 2005 05:29 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't either! I mean I have some obvious stuff like Bauhaus, Siouxsie, Cure, Sisters - but I hardly ever listen to it. I was always more of the new wave school, liking Japan and the Cocteaus and DCD and Visage and stuff.

And that reminds me - how come we ain't never seen a photo of you, huh huh huh? Come on cough up!

Adam, critique is like assessment. You present your artwork or in my case progress on artwork and the class and your teachers tell you what they think of it. It's pretty high stress and a very long day, but kind of good to get feedback, although most people are pretty pathetic with any constructive criticism. It's all, "I really like it..........................", which doesn't help me improve much.

Now whys this stuff bad, again?

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

Ah, cool then. It's ages since I did a cone, can't remember how it works. :)

Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 00:29 (twenty years ago)

dope only has nicotine if you use tobacco as a filler. trying to remember from doing addiction studies, i think generally evidence suggests the burning might lead to tiny increase in throat cancer but hard to test as most pot smokers are also ciggy smokers.

i think you would find that physically one cone a night would be waaaay healthier than any cigarettes and wine drunk in quantities greater than moderation. however i must say in the days when i used to smoke every night, i never used to get a fkn thing done.

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

even after giving up (at first i still used to just have some every now and then) i realised i couldn't keep it in the house as i have no will power and must smoke it till it's finished. now i don't like it anymore. i don't think i've touched it for about 2.5 years.

Ok, now the BBC needs to greenlight more sci-fi and genre television.

It's not like Australian TV ever would.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Thursday, 16 June 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

Where would it get the money from? Doctor Who costs enough, there's no way any Aus company would have the cash to start one.

Let's write a new ABC drama - we'll call it Above and Beyond. It's about a city lawyer, female, late 30's, who goes to Katoomba to start a new life. There, she finds a variety of loveable local eccentriczzzzzzzzz. She gets involved in community politics, brokers peace between the ecologically conscious hippies and the old codgers, renovates a beautiful but run down mansion, finds love, and is forced to confront her past when her former husband, who she still loves, shows up. The series ends with everyone being gunned down by me.

Urgh, I'm actually not dealing well with the wintery horrible weather and such.

Look, I'm not asking for a show set on Mars with a spaceship and laser guns. All I'd like to see is some decent episodic television with a good sense of both the humourous and the dramatic with some fantastic elements. Is that too much to ask?

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Thursday, 16 June 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

ANYHOO.

My series was going to be like 'Medium' meets 'The Shield'.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Thursday, 16 June 2005 03:41 (twenty years ago)

Money's the simple answer really. Aus TV has none. US tv does, simple as that.

WHO IS JMS?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 16 June 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

I thought Medium was Medium meets The Shield.

Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 16 June 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)

JMS = J Michael Straczinsky, Bab5 writer/creator.

I LOVE that show. Tho yes, it has its over the top pompous/daft moments. Scifi is meant to innit. Its like a soap opera, only with space ships and computers and shit.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 16 June 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

i'm struggling to think of a sci fi tv show that is better than a sci fi book.

The new Doctor Who comes pretty close. Seriously.

Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 16 June 2005 03:51 (twenty years ago)

ugh

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 16 June 2005 03:52 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but how often does that Medium chick shoot a child-murderer and make it look like self-defence. Hence the mention of 'The Shield'.

Basic set up was -> 20 or so years into the future, spiritualism and mediums have a scientific basis. Certain tricked-out cops can place their hands on the body of the recently deceased and summon their spirit to finger the perp.

Melbourne has a unit of these, around half way through the century. Melbourne is huge and is begin to reach upwards. It's all very dark and neo-victorian. Corruption is rife. Strange forces are beginning to manipulate the city's organised crime...

I thought Jim was into the psych-rock? Wasn't he talking about a compilation of sixties garage/psych a few days ago, when we were talking about the White Stripes or something?

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Thursday, 16 June 2005 04:09 (twenty years ago)

yes gem i laughed!

i just rang up someone to be my referee and she told me the boss at the job i'm going for tomorrow is a psycho (well, erratic and difficult with a dubious stance on collection development is what she actually said)

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 16 June 2005 04:14 (twenty years ago)

Jim is TOTALLY into psyc rock in my view. Even in Tugboat you can hear it in those sweeping, blissful melodies. But most of all, you can see it in that strange look he gives me when we meet at The Pony.

Get stewed, books are a load of crap.

From this page, it's apparently a slang term for weed:

http://www.lionofzion.com/faq/78da33310400009b0066/Rasta's+beliefs+&+Marijuana+as+a+Holy+Sacrament.html

RS: One of the most important songs in recent reggae history is
"Under Mi Sleng Teng." That was a revolutionary song. And yet,
while Wayne Smith gets a lot of credit for that, it is you who

My future stepfather-in-law got bit by a brown recluse spider, bandaged it up himself and had a heart attack yesterday. They didn't work it out until he had to keep sitting down between wheeling patients around (he's a nurse).

Good morning Aussies! I landed in Sydney at around 6 yesterday morning. Put my stuff back at my brothers place, went for a walk around and then slept for about 7 hours and then my brother took me took me to Wentworth Park (?) to train with his football team, Michael Cusacks. Needless to say I sat most of it out, the last time I ran around a field was about 10 years ago. I like the weather the way it is now ('cept for the fact it gets dark at 5), its like a nice Irish summers day (without the intermittent rain of course). I'm half dreading the summer heat. I'm traipsing around Bondi Junction right now. Anywhere else I should check out? Record shops, secondhand clothes, I dunno anything interesting.

You can get real hair pencil thin moustaches. I think James would look great in a pair of plus fours and a riding crop. Mikey, well I've already got my civil war union hat, two in fact. Heh, we could make it tattered as hell, make me look like a ghostly civil war soldier or something (hell double exposure)! I think I've even got a sword somewhere.

I'm still down for sitting around looking deathly with an hourglass and a skull though. I think that's going to be my tattoo when I get it - a woodcut skull and hourglass taken from an old piratical flag.

I did a filmmaking course with Safran back in the day. I see him at Borders, Lygon Street sometimes too. Cait sees Molly Meldrum on Bridge Road sometimes.

"Mmm, these meatballs are nice"
"That's what Claudia Karvan had when we went out for dinner last night"
"Goodness is that the time?"
"That's a coincidence! I lived with Wil Anderson for three years, he used to look at the time"

God, wanker++.

This is why I make stuff up about meeting celebrities, the whole idea of telling people about knowing someone omgfamous is just so banal. If I were famous for any reason I don't know that I'd want people recording my daily whereabouts on an ad hoc basis.

Crankypants (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 17 June 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 17 June 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

Geez, thats terrible Gaz. I hope he recovers quickly. I don't know what it's like to love your Dad but if it's similar to loving your Mum, I understand 100%.

Best wishes for your dad, mully. I hope he comes right soon.

I wonder if Trayce ever did go and see her sister-in-law.

estela (estela), Saturday, 18 June 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

I didn't! I called her and said something about work stuff getting in the way and she was cool, she was out shopping it up anyway. I offered she should come over and see my place today instead - dunno if she will. I'm cleaning up like mad anyway ;)

Gaz, sorry to hear your dad's taken ill like that. I hope he recovers with full strength and health :)

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 18 June 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

In other news, it is me and Nicks second anniversary today! :D

So far, we have celebrated by him crawling into bed at 6 this morning after a 22 hour work shift (farrrkk, not AGAIN) and cuddled and said "happy anniversary!" and fell back asleep.

Hes still asleep now. Bah.

hallo mongrels

skidmore's met everyone gaz! I always giggle awkwardly to myself when he namedrops Edd!e C@mpbe11 on ILC.

I once saw Kate Langbroek running late for a plane at the tin-shed Virgin terminal. She was wearing tight white shirt 'n' pants with no underwear top or bottom. looked sweaty. And I saw a bunch of mini-celebs not in Freedom but in Ikea at Moore Park last year!

happy birthdays and anniversaries and health-wishes all round.

Momus appears to be robbing people at gunpoint in Dukes Of Hazzard Go To Hollywood on the telly incidentally.

are we going to Michael B-fap, Sydneysiders?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Sunday, 19 June 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

I had an actual long weekend and now I just feel sad and tired! We didn't even do anything fancy for our anniversary :( We just had the family dinner thingy which wasnt even related to our day. Then we spent all y'day sitting about playing pooter games and feeling a bit hung over (in that nice slow way tho).

I dunno, I am just so over working, I feel like I should be a philosopher or something, haha. Like Peter's ancestor on the family guy.

*philosopher dude, sitting and thinking*

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 19 June 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

no mental health day, two days was quite enough!

birthday was OK. got socks, chocolate, money for digital camera (went to the city, looked, didn't buy). dinner was a blowout so I acquired FRIED CHIKKEN and was about to go home when I pretty much bumped into a cousin and his girlfriend who were down from bendigo for the weekend. we ended up going on the "haunted melbourne ghost tour", which was a larf. then I went and got drunk watching the cricket. then yesterday I went to a house party, with Adam!

(xp) haha yes he showed me that before he sent it! ;)

cheeses haitch christ (haitch), Sunday, 19 June 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

Hi mongrels.

I would just like to proclaim that, having submitted ALL OF MY ASSIGNMENTS now, totalling some 25,000 words all up, and marked all the stuff I had to do as a tutor, totalling some one million words all up, that I HAVE SURVIVED ONE SEMESTER AS A POST-GRAD STUDENT/TUTOR.

Now, to raid da boss's massive wine stash...

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 20 June 2005 01:38 (twenty years ago)

I just can't get it to be lively and interesting. I just tell the kids to do page x of the textbook and slump behind my laptop because I have not the energy to actually move around and be all teacherly.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Monday, 20 June 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

Mikey, your qualifications (and assuming at least passable references) may not seem like they'll get you into other things, but I think you'll find other employers, once they get past the "So why don't you want to teach" will probably view the background as a plus as it's pretty much assumed you'll have lots of incredibly useful skills, so CALL CALL CALL EVERYONE EVER, teachers always land on their feet. Ish.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

Yeah what about TAFE teaching or something?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:07 (twenty years ago)

You got a point, Ed. I'm going to go on a coldcall frenzy soon, as I can't see myself plugging through here year after year.

I'll look at TAFE.

Some of you guys are gonna want to slap me, but I'm also kind of interested in advertising (well, the creative side)... how do you get a leg up there?

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

Suck a guy with a suit and ponytail's cock.

Er, maybe.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

Well, let's just say something creative. I don't need to be selling shit.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

Sadly I dont think "creative" and "advertising" exist in the same universe.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

After all any industry wot refers to its writers and designers as "our creatives" deserves a hard kick in the nads.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

Yeah yeah, okay, I wish I hadn't said that.

Oh God, it's so one of mine too.

Mully -> I guess it would have to be a more practical english or such. I don't think they do history at any TAFEs. Yeah, like 'Like Skills English' or something.

I'm going to bug the ABC, ACMI, the National Trust and Museum Victoria the first round.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

Making off like a lucky bandit / Kate (papa november), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

I too have finished all my assignments, however I have a big exam tomorrow about teaching strategies. Yuk.

Making off like a lucky bandit / Kate (papa november), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I feel like I missed the boat by not involving myself in youth radio and making a jump from there to the media. a'probably too late, but I'm going to give it a go (in my advances to the ABC).

I might be good for online stuff too. I used to work on creating the 'Encyclopedia of Bad', kind of a Rotten Library for the kindergarten crowd (following the trend of history textbooks taking a sensationalistic gory tone to grab kid's attention). It would be amazingly awesome if I could get paid for similar creative efforts.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:50 (twenty years ago)

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:51 (twenty years ago)

SHUT UP! DO NOT SAY THOSE WORDS!

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:51 (twenty years ago)

(Edward has spent the last month or so marking a million words of Vygotsky, Piaget, Multiple Intelligences, and other assorted rubbish, and has developed a condition whereby even hearing the name "Vygotsky" causes him to froth at the mouth and kill whatever happens to be in front of him at the same time. Thank goodness his officemate is not in at the moment)

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:52 (twenty years ago)

Ah scaffolding. Damn, I should've used that in my assignment. It was all core learning this, key learning that. Lesson plan, lesson plan, quality learning outcomes, lesson plan, hazard managment etc etc etc.

Making off like a lucky bandit / Kate (papa november), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

Thus is explained Fat Pizza.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

Quality learning outcomes. Yeah, with Queensland syllabi? Those things are written while all the academics are absolutely pissed off their faces on champagne. Or maybe that's just the English syllabus...

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:54 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I can't make sense of it. I don't ask questions anymore, I just want my fucking degree.

Making off like a lucky bandit / Kate (papa november), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:55 (twenty years ago)

Queensland's curriculum documents come from Mars.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

That's why I'll be teaching in Victoria hopefully.

Making off like a lucky bandit / Kate (papa november), Monday, 20 June 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

Hilarious anecdote from Edward's uni days:

Standing outside the office of English curriculum lecturer, hearing her totally hate on a student. This student didn't understand what discourse meant. (This is, of course, a word that's horribly overused and is often just jargon.)

"What the fuck are you talking about? We've been discussing this for two months now. What's your other subject area apart from English?"

(inaudible)

"Ah! Now I understand. Fucking PE Majors, you're all a bunch of idiots!".

A complaint was lodged, and everybody passed, even those who were sitting on pass concededs like me. Hooray! Typical though, I mean honestly, "knowledge and application of the constructedness of texts", what sort of bullshit IS that?

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 20 June 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

Hmm. Wasn't that hilarious after all. Oh well. It's all in the delivery usually.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 20 June 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

I think you've just nailed why I hate teaching English.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Monday, 20 June 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

No it is hilarious. I think with that jargon, you only have to know how to use it, not what it means. I've written so many assignments full of that shit that I can almost write them blindfolded. It's just trying to motivate myself to do it thats hard these days.

Making off like a lucky bandit / Kate (papa november), Monday, 20 June 2005 03:07 (twenty years ago)

So can I, but I'm surrounded by them all the time and it's all fucking subjective and it's like swimming through a sea of wet, cold, shredded newspaper.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 20 June 2005 03:15 (twenty years ago)

No, not really. I just finished an assignment which was basically about prac, which I didn't actually get to do yet because griffith fucked up. It was worth 50% and I just had to "make it up".

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 20 June 2005 03:17 (twenty years ago)

I hated not going on a secondary prac until THIRD YEAR the way I did it, at the exact same time as the MOST DIFFICULT FUCKING SUBJECT EVER, and before doing any of the most important curriculum pre-requisites. Nice scheduling, letting people go for 2 whole years before finding out whether they can actually stand in front of a class and teach.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 20 June 2005 03:18 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I don't understand that either.

Making off like a lucky bandit / Kate (papa november), Monday, 20 June 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

Here's my favourite quote EVER from an essay I marked, from a lovely Asian student who, perhaps bored with the dry language used to describe Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences, spiced her prose up with a bit of colourful colloquy:

"It's possible to be a genius at the racetrack but a retard in stock market."

Hello mongrels.

I got a high distinction for one of my subjects. This would not normally be a surprise, except for the fact that I don't think I understand anything of what I wrote, or what I read for it. It was on research methodology and paradigms and things like that! Everyone in the class used to look at me with cold eyes when I fell asleep during the workshops, and would act all surprised every time I spoke and now I'm laughing as I got the top mark....

Nice work, Mully.

Feeling a lot better today. Yesterday was...okay. I slept in, managed to organise my marking, did some cleaning. I got a bit stressed about school and that kind of came out when we missed a screening of Batman Begins that I'd bought tickets to. I just wanted some escapism! After a bit of a cry and a long talk with Caitlin, we came up with a vague plan to get started on making up a copywriting folio and trying to do the best job possible here until I'm in a position where I can find work in publishing or copywriting.

if i had a boyfriend, i probably literally wouldn't have seen him for about 2 weeks over these exams, i was at the library from 8:30am - 11pm for about 10 days straight i think.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

hmmm. yeah i know how you feel, that seems like a long way away. i remember feeling a bit like that when i got offered it too. but the extra year was totally worth it when i did finish it. and it does fly past, and it will give you a chance to pursue all the stuff you're good at in a more specialise way, less limited by the course framework while you're an undergrad. also yay that you got offered it! that in itself says something about how well you're going. errrr xpost!

yeah actually i heard that apparently loads of people have quickies on level 4!! i was astonished (and slightly jealous) when i heard this since that's where i always study and i've never stumbled across anyone going for it up there.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

Good morning all.

Trayce, you can buy a paste at the chemist called (it's an unfortunate name) 'Kenalog' which is great for healing mouth ulcers. Usually it clears them up in a couple of days. I'm prone to them as well so I know your pain:(

estela (estela), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

Aye, I think I have some kenalog at home somewhere... the only problem with the stuff is you can really only put it on at bedtime, cos the paste is so ickyblech it gets in the way of daytime things like eating and drinking. That said, hell yeah it went away ovenight last time I used some, so I should hunt for the tube. Cos this pain is pissing me off. Its right against a tooth :( Owie.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

I assume a combo of being a bit run down and smoking is giving me the ulcer.

Yeah I saw Caits post on screamy lady. We had a screamy lady like that once. She was a drunk crazy poor woman who lived across the road, screaming "call the cops you CUNTS" over and over and over so much her voice went raw. And then the cops came. And said "keep it down or we might (!!!) arrest someone". They went away.

Then the shouting came back, some bloke comes out too, scuffling occurs, yelling and "get off me!", and then all these guys from the Rabinnical college appeared! And started being threatening! In Yiddish! It was like the League of Extraordinary Hasid Men or something.

Cops came back after that and everyone dispersed.

Strange night.

moley (moley), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, most of the people in our street are old ethnic sorts or hip young yuppie wasters. It's all very congenial.

I joked with Cait that someone broke into a vacant victorian building up the street, a crumbling monolith I like to call the House of Dead Girls. Since I hear banging and crashing coming from that direction at night.

Man that place gives me the willies.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

(I do understand it's probably people renovating the place. Still, from the outside it doesn't look like anybody's been there since 1902.)

Making off like a lucky bandit / Kate (papa november), Thursday, 23 June 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

I wanted to sell my old kodak dc4800, its a 3.1mp camera with pretty good controls for ASO and shutter and stuff. If anyone wants it, have it - not for free tho ;P $400 ONO I'm thinking (the fucker cost me $1500!)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 23 June 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

I keep saying I'm going to buy a digital camera, then coming up with excuses not to. "Ah, my USB ports don't work". "Ah, I never take photos anyway". Except I recently found out my USB ports DO work and I keep finding myself wanting to take sodding photos. When tax comes back.

My housemate woke me up at 3am. She had some variety of bloke in her room. A young, rather unattractive man with low-riding pants. What would her boyfriend back in New Zealand say.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 23 June 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 23 June 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

no, thats cos i'm fat

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 23 June 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

Gaz, you are as beautiful as any of God's creatures. But I have a poor memory for faces.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 23 June 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

I think my new camera has paid for itself already which is pretty gratifying.

Doesn't stop me Gaz.

Making off like a lucky bandit / Kate (papa november), Thursday, 23 June 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

I wonder whether that camera would be better than my video camera. Any picture that I take with it at nighttime looks crap. No flash, just a light.

I'd love to take some pictures of the House Of Dead Girls, the Black Science Institute and Fear Street that didn't need a whole lot of manipulation to put online.

I've promised Cait I'd buy her a 4mp camera sometime in the future so she could do some proper photography. That'll be $$. Good impetus to try to push stories on magazines. I was pestering FHM last night.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Thursday, 23 June 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

This one has a flash. I rarely use my flash though, it makes everything look amateurish.

I wanted to post that. I don't know why. I found it strangely amusing I guess.

Making off like a lucky bandit / Kate (papa november), Thursday, 23 June 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

I've decided to be extravagant and buy a 7 mp camera!

cheeses haitch christ (haitch), Thursday, 23 June 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

how pointy is that girl's tongue! i like the way the one in the red stockings looks bored and as if she really feels that she might be above it all

gem (trisk), Thursday, 23 June 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

Heheh, yeah, cameras are cool. Maybe that camera would be worth a few beers next time you're dpwn south.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Thursday, 23 June 2005 01:11 (twenty years ago)

Red stripe eh?

Making off like a lucky bandit / Kate (papa november), Thursday, 23 June 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

Whatever's your poison.

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Thursday, 23 June 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

Japanese kiddies are weird. This strange mixed up mess of rebellion and cutseyness thats all so wrong, its hilarious.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 23 June 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

I've never tried it, I noticed you were all for it. What's it like?

xpost

Yes, technicolour goth!

Making off like a lucky bandit / Kate (papa november), Thursday, 23 June 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:13 (twenty years ago)

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:17 (twenty years ago)

You could sell your body on the street.

Making off like a lucky bandit / Kate (papa november), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:59 (twenty years ago)

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:09 (twenty years ago)

hits are overrated

gem (trisk), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:11 (twenty years ago)

have you ever tried to make one? i mean produce one of the songs for the chartpop single market.

maybe just the one and you could buy new mikes and beer.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:11 (twenty years ago)

ah good point. i reckon i could do it, i have reason, L2 and an autotune plug in.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:14 (twenty years ago)

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

Or a song about an interspecies relationship between a badger and a sheep?

moley (moley), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

but bear in mind it could ruin your life

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:24 (twenty years ago)

did you ever recapture that melody from the shower the other day? THAT COULDA BEEN THE BIG ONE!

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:25 (twenty years ago)

no. i've lost more good melodies in the last three weeks than i've ever committed to tape

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:27 (twenty years ago)

They went down the drain.

Don't throw out the baby with the bathwater.

Making off like a lucky bandit / Kate (papa november), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:28 (twenty years ago)

some bastard out there is going to be having a drink of water and be struck with inspiration. MY inspiration, dammit!

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

but bear in mind it could ruin your life
-- mullygrubbr

was that an intentional pun, given we were discussing animals?

moley (moley), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:37 (twenty years ago)

i'm kind of smiling despite myself. we have a youngish woman (20?) working here and she has a relatively short skirt on today and this sleazy old italian journo just came in and was just standing there checking her out and singing romantically in italian. "you are dressed like a beauty queen today!" he exclaimed. she got a little flustered.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:41 (twenty years ago)

I never assume the sex of anyone any more. My mother told me never to assume. She never said the bit about it making an Ass out of U and Me though.
-- moley (dominakto...), June 23rd, 2005.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

For example, I made quite a fool out of myself assuming Gaz / Mullygrubber was male. She forgave me though.

moley (moley), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:56 (twenty years ago)

where from?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 23 June 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

hehe yep that was funny. it's on the 'why is ilm exclusively male' thread.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 23 June 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

jesus. did anyone challenge. i can't be arsed with that thread.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 23 June 2005 07:48 (twenty years ago)

nah i think everyone was too busy deconstructing female backstabbing and its impact on the gender imbalance inherent to music-geek discussion boards to notice the attack on your manhood gaz. i laughed though.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 23 June 2005 07:54 (twenty years ago)

I just started reading it but damn its long already, dunno if I can be bothered.

I will say this tho: I've never found ILM sexist - it is very aggressive and anal and pompous, but to anyone not worthy, not just women.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 23 June 2005 07:54 (twenty years ago)

yeah that's pretty much a concise summary of the gist of the thread as well trayce.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 23 June 2005 07:56 (twenty years ago)

its not so much the absence of females that keeps me away from that board (although that may be a symptom or a cause for the fact that) its just full of dull people talking about dull stuff.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 23 June 2005 07:56 (twenty years ago)

with their own dicks tiredly stretching toward their own arseholes

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 23 June 2005 07:57 (twenty years ago)

maybe they should start posting pics of that, could liven it up a bit

gem (trisk), Thursday, 23 June 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

i never said those dicks got anywhere near reaching

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 23 June 2005 08:01 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha! Yoink.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 23 June 2005 08:02 (twenty years ago)

hehehe

gem (trisk), Thursday, 23 June 2005 08:02 (twenty years ago)

are you tyna get me in trouble trayce ;)?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 23 June 2005 08:28 (twenty years ago)

The last mongrels/sheepfux0rs has over 1200 posts. I think it's high time we started a new one, wouldn't you agree? I think I shall.

Okay cool.

Making off like a lucky bandit / Kate (papa november), Thursday, 23 June 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

So start it, Otherwise the mongrels thread is in limbo....or was that your evil plan?

Making off like a lucky bandit / Kate (papa november), Thursday, 23 June 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

Why do we let these godless heathens start our new threads?

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Thursday, 23 June 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

Because you allow me to, and this is the only time I'll ever (get to) start a mongrel/sheepfux0r thread.
