Your weekly burrito consumption

I realized today that since moving to the West Coast, burritos are the thing i most consume over a week's time, to about 5-6 per week. This can be attributed to the number of taquieras locally and to how I'm on the go all day for work.

How about you? How many burritos do you eat per week?

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

3 per month, maybe. I eat more tacos than burritos now.

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

On average, I would estimate that I eat about 1/4 to 1/2 of a burrito per week (2-4 per month).

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

However, I have a girlfriend and standards and she has standards as well.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

One can't eat burritos for every meal. It's unseemly.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

Besides, pizza.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

If frozen chimichangas count as well, six a week is pretty accurate.

Oops, you're supposed to take the foil off before eating them. I told you before.

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

I eat a lot more quesadillas than I do burritos. Quesadillas are my default "cooking drunk/late at night" meal.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

"standards"

Oops, you're supposed to take the foil off before eating them. I told you before.

Haha, I was drunk one night and so I went to Flash Taco, and was chowing down on my burrito when it occurred to me that the tortilla was a little different this time -- a little flakier, almost like phyllo. I was actually enjoying it until I looked down and realized I'd eaten half of the paper wrapper.

Flash Taco = Damen/North/Milwaukee.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

I've gotten tired of burritos and hardly ever order them. Look at what the taqueria employees bring to the table on their lunch break: it's never burritos (usually rice, beans, corn tortillas, and some mole sauce or something)... that's very telling.

Maybe someday I'll get back into them, but I'm on a big tamale trip right now and burritos seems bland and hippy now.

andy --, Monday, 11 July 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Less than one a month. Philadelphia is not a good city for Mexican food. All the Mexicans in kitchens here are busy making textureless pizza.

One a week, wheat tortilla.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

why not get a taco (or 3) or an enchilada or a chimichanga? the success of burritos seems like "gringos like when you put a whole bunch of shit all in one thing, regardless of how it ends up tasting."
i'm honestly puzzled.

oops (Oops), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

four a week, made by me. when I go out for mexican I get enchiladas or something.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Actually, lately I have gotten two or three tacos instead of a burrito. Although they def. pile in all that lettuce, beans, tomatoes, cheese, and sour cream as much as they can onto a tiny corn tortilla.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

'Cuz burritos have built-in convenience that you get all of it in your hand, wrapped-up. You can't get that with enchiladas or chimichangas.

tacos are usually smaller, more numerous, and not as many kinds of ingredients(no rice, for example).

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

things to avoid: refried beans, cheese, sour cream, guacamole (although it has "good" fat), and any other dairy based sauces. Substitute whole beans and/or rice.

chicken, especially grilled is much better than any red meat or pork.

Sometimes burritos are just too huge too.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

But Sour cream and Guac taste so good!

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

see exactly. rice should not be in a tortilla with meat and sauce and beans and sour cream and guac and whatever else is in the kitchen! it's convenient, but the tastes and textures don't mesh and the tortilla is always a soggy bleh mess.

oops (Oops), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah and as far as i can tell the mexicans around here (60 miles north of the mexican border) like burritos too and seem to have no problem with them being "gringo" food.

note that most of the burritos are from the local Baja Fresh fastfood place, which does not use the refried beans in most of them. plenty of other junk, tho. so tasty.

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

kingfish you cut off that quote of mine prematurely.
i don't think i've ever had a chimichanga actually. but i've had burritos. and they suck.
being a gringo, i have no problem eating some gringo food. i prefer lettuce and cheese and sour cream on my tacos, for instance. i dunno, maybe every burrito i've had has just been unusually bland and soggy.
how do you add a dif salsa or hot sauce to them without opening them up and having it becoming a huge mess?

xpost i've had a baja fresh burrito. BLAND!

I don't understand the cred that El Fartolito has. Having lived right around the corner from it for 4 years, I quickly found it completely nauseating - way too much sour cream, no grilled chicken, super-salty tortillas, terrible service, bland salsa, no real variety in ingredients... and yet friends/bandmates/neighbors are always suggesting going there. Maybe I just got burned out on it...

my current standby is Tonayense - best from the restaurant, but their roach coaches retain the same flavor.

Shake yMo Collier, Monday, 11 July 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

My favorites are Cancun and El Farolito too!

I also like Baja Fresh though. I don't think the flavor is bland at all. I love the salsa bar (which could be useful if you think it's bland).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

oops (Oops), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

Baja Fresh I've never tried (where is it?)

Cancun is good - I'd put it in the same strata as Pancho Villa, Zapata, Azteca, La Corneta (they're all kind of similar in approach).

what do people make of Balazo on Haight St? I've always liked it, even though it is overpriced and about as authentic as Taco Bell, they make some tasty shit.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 11 July 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

yeah the only good thing about baja fresh is that there's cholula on every table. i'm lucky in that there's a place in my area that makes a dozen or so fresh salsas every day.

oops (Oops), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

i eat about one a month:

burrito al pastor with refried beans on a flour tortilla. i like the more authentic places.

farolito is pretty good (i don't eat sour cream though). i ate at balazo once and the carne asada was almost all cartilage and gristle.

My favorite burrito thread is the hilarious one where andy calls out gringos who order burritos in spanish, that was a great thread.

Is this a sort of blue blace with candles? I think Alex took me there and I liked it.

Nevada Lime (nordicskilla), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

the salsa bar is what keeps it from being bland. mix about 3 different kinds together, slightly unroll the side and give it an even spreading, and then there you go.

now, baja fresh is overpriced, i'll grant you that. everything in there costs about a buck more thna it should.

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

Baja Fresh is this mexican restaurant (now a large franchise) from Simi Valley started by this old religious white lady who thanked me for killing a mosquito hawk right before closing about 12 years ago in her Newbury Park store (the 2nd Baja Fresh IIRC).

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

There's arbitrary snobbery with regards to Baja Fresh simply because it's a chain. Their food is usually excellent (and often *much* healthier than many burrito places).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

Wait, I like chain food almost as much as you, but Baja Fresh is not one of my favorites. I like their taquitos okay, I guess.

oops (Oops), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

Adam, those are mini-chains!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

there's also chains like Chipotle and Qdoba, owned by McDonalds and the Jack in the Box guys, i think.

so! we could debate about how rockist one is about one's burritos, w.r.t. "authenticity," etc.

The Chipotle burrito/fajita things are great, and weight down the stomach a lot less than half-a-kilo of frijoles in a tortilla.

i guess it does get sort of dull eventually.

burritos are just so damn efficient.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

I couldn't give less of a shit about 'authentic' though I do tend to like the places with the crazy Mexican meat choices, like tongue and whatnot. Balazo is OK. The El Faro down the street from work isn't great but it'll do as a workday lunch place. Every taqueria has it's own best and worst items, and eventually you can learn what not order in one is precisely why you go to another. I'm jonesing for tamales right now.

Apples & Fried Apples Touché

As I've said before, I will even eat at Chevy's on a road trip if it means avoiding burger chains.

polish sausage is ok. brats (grilled directly then cooked in beer and onions) are better.

there may be some snootiness, but i don't think it's unfounded in this case. most every chain burrito/mex place i've been to has been shit. there have been many non-chain places that are also shit, but at least there's the chance to find one that isn't.

In NYC I had burritos about 1-2 x per week. But then I realized that they were too big and I had to keep eating and eating and eating. Especially for lunch, the way that they are made is too too much. Now, I eat taco salad about 1-2 x per week. It is one of my favorite Tex Mexes. Especially when the bowl is made out of the taco shell. Especially in the summer. I like Baja Fresh and California Tortilla Co. I like Taco Bell, but I never manage to order enough stuff to fill up. There, the burritos are decidedly not too big. I could eat taco salad every day of the week. I wish I did. I also like chili salad.

I used to be a really enthusiastic almost daily burrito eater and then I got tired of them. But what's weird is that while everyone's mentioning all the innards I find flour tortillas almost revolting in a way now. Corn tortillas are great but just the thought of chewing on that pressed flour almost make me ill especially where it's all bunched up at the end. And I have almost no food intolerances.

carbon (carbon), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

I make a breakfast burrito every weekday for breakfast (eggs, salsa, cheese and hot sauce) and then have homemade burritos about 2-3 times a week for dinner (pinto or black beans (not refried), tofutti sour cream, avocado, salsa, hot sauce and nutritional yeast. 1-3 times a month I will go out for a burrito.

h0t h0t h0rsey (Carey), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

ok see the bunched part at the end is the one thing i like about a burrito. i love good flour tortillas.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I can't explain it, the tortilla used to be a really essential part of the experience. Now it's like why are you taking this really dry food and making it kind of moist but still able to bind. WTF. It just seems like an almost unnatural state for flour to be in. I feel pretty ashamed to say this because of course it's probably some western yeast hegemony I've internalized.

General comments:

I've had carne guisada tacos before with rice in them, so rice is totally ok inside tortillas.

(Though they did look askance at me when I ordered them that way. Eh. They's tasty.)

I don't know very many Mexican/Tex-Mex places here that have burritos on the menu, but the most authentic-tasting "Mexican" national chain restaurant actually makes its trade on burritos. That would be Chipotle Grill. Chipotle has THE MOST AUTHENTIC-tasting food I've ever had from a chain that can be found outside a specific region of the country, even though their tortilla was a bit chewy. Regular flour tortillas purchased at a molino are light, pillowy, and soft. And bad for you too, sure, but oh they taste so good.

Last Mexican food I had: Two potato & egg tacos on corn tortillas for breakfast Sunday. I think. Yeah. The corn tortillas were mercifully homemade, so they were deliciously thick and hearty. Not like the stuff you get from a package at your local McMart, though those are good for home use & for making migas or chilaquiles.

Oh! And correction time -- enchiladas aren't supposed to have meat in them unless they specifically mention they've got meat. Enchiladas are supposed to be filled with cheese. That's it. And the best enchiladas have just a rich chili powder-based sauce on top, not actual chili. Though if that's what the restaurant wants to do... eh.

most of the mex places here do, except for the more high-end restaurants that specialize in seafood.

Oh yes. The AZ/TX divide. It's probably all in how the Mexican immigrants from the two states came from different parts of Mexico. Which is why CA Mexican food tasted very weird to me when I first had it (which is putting it lightly), and why I suspect NM Mexican food would taste more familiar to me.

Most of these local places, BTW, have a special section in their menus for nachos, though they're not the type with the fakey orange melted cheese-type topping (which I do like, actually). Most of these variations of nachos also include beans, BTW. I don't know why; that's just how things are, apparently. Hm.

My weekly burrito consumption might increase in the near future. There's a new Meixcan foodtruck at 16th & Callowhill in Philadelphia (right near a major INS office). I have a burrito about once a year at Glastonbury! It costs a million pounds and is never as good as I think it will be, see also ostrich burgz0rs chiz. Stick to the CURRY GOAT and tartiflette and you will be alright.

If I are making Mexican food at home ("chilli" doesn't count, even if you squirt some lime on it, right?) I make TACOS, which is chilli inside a strange large bendy crisp with some cheese on it. You can also have FAJITAS which involve peppers and WRAPS.

I think - in 2000?? - I went to a Mexican restaurant in Camden. I had a burger and got food poisoning.

I have, however, learnt from VERONICA MARS that when you go to "Tijuana", you call it "Tee Jay"! But she didn't say anything about burritos. I'm sorry.

Jonathan Gold FTW

Dear Mr. Gold:

I have a friend in town from Berkeley who loves burritos. What do you suggest? I'm thinking of ignoring her habit and forcing her to go to for mole at La Tia instead, but she seems set in her ways.

--Erica, Los Angeles

Dear Erica:

Bay Area residents tend to have peculiar ideas about burritos, which they regard as monstrous things wrapped in tinfoil, and filled with what would seem to be the contents of an entire margarita-mill dinner, including grilled meat, rice, beans, guacamole, tomatoes, salsa, sour cream, orange cheese, and probably a lot of other things that neither God nor man ever intended to see the inside of a tortilla, much less the soggy steamed pup-tents that are but mandatory up north.

If you want to show your friend that San Francisco has no patent on the oversize burrito, you could always drag her to El Tepeyac over on Evergreen, where the Manuel's Special or Hollenbeck, which is to the Mexican-American table what a giant plate of spaghetti and meatballs is to the Italian one, is massive enough to feed a family of four for a weekend. If you want to show her the burritos that generations of Angelenos have snarfed after Dodger games, there's always the original Burrito King on Sunset at Alvarado, although the chile verde isn't quite the elixir I remember from the misty days of Fernandomania.

But if you would like to prove that Angelenos had been eating burritos for decades, when the Mission was still an unreconstructed Irish neighborhood, take her to Al & Bea's, a block down from the new Hollenbeck police station in Boyle Heights. Al & Bea's isn't fancy, and your choice of burrito is basically limited to red and green, but what it churns out by the hundreds is the lean, classic Los Angeles burrito: refried beans, a bit of cheese, and a ladleful of stew if you want it, a reminder of the burrito's origins as a way to turn a bit of the previous night's dinner into a delicious, transportable taste of home.

I don't like rice in the burrito. The tortilla is enough starch.

My chicken burrito has caramelized onions (cooked in red wine and brown sugar), refried black beans, jack cheese and chicken shredded and moistened with salsa. Serve with huge dollops of guacamole and sour cream. Damn good. Can do the same with ground or shredded beef.

iiiijjjj, Tuesday, 29 December 2009 21:57 (sixteen years ago)

I think I've actually had a burrito from there - it was excellent. I was in El Cajon for all of three days.

sarahel, Tuesday, 29 December 2009 22:06 (sixteen years ago)

really? down the street from city hall, next door to a chaldean market? it's my all-time favorite, my friend used to live in the taft apartments behind it and we'd always stumble over there to get our late-night burritage. el compadre on second street, right off the 8, is also good and features the popular drive-thru thru the a-frame setup. el cajon is my hometown, i'm glad you had a favorable visit, burrito-wise anyway.

iiiijjjj, Tuesday, 29 December 2009 22:24 (sixteen years ago)

three years pass...

My weekly burrito consumption might increase in the near future. There's a new Meixcan foodtruck at 16th & Callowhill in Philadelphia (right near a major INS office).

This truck turned out to be owned and run by an Indonesian couple who had been taught by Mexicans. Obviously, my burrito consumption has increased substantially since moving to Albuquerque.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 23:06 (twelve years ago)

i haven't had a real burrito in months. i've had burrito bowls from chipotle, but it's not the same. must remedy soon.

i think the last one i had was the carne asada burrito from the la estrella taco truck in highland park, the night i went to see william basinski and lucky dragons.

Do french fries belong inside of burritos? What do you think?

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Wednesday, 2 September 2020 18:15 (five years ago)

you know, there was a time when people questioned whether or not potatoes belonged inside french fries. nowadays, most people don't even know about that struggle. that's kind of where we are with french fry burritos today, i think

Scampos Runamuck (WmC), Wednesday, 2 September 2020 18:24 (five years ago)

we should also ask ourselves, if a burro ate a burrito would that be considered cannibalism?

the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Wednesday, 2 September 2020 18:26 (five years ago)

I am specifically referring to the burrito style described here which is now seen all over (?) the country.

If French fries belong in a kebab, they also belong in a burrito.

If a hole appeared inside your roof
And a burrito fell through it, like POOF!

You felt a violent need to crap
