Saying Goodbye to Cigarettes

Need to quit smoking them sharpish. I am, for a variety of reasons, the last person who should even consider doing this. Are any of you au faiit with good ways to STOP?

suzy, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Go to a doctor. Talk to him or her. Follow their advice.

anthony, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Carrot sticks helped me. Whenever I craved a cigarette, the only thing that I found just as satisfying was a carrot stick. And what's a little orangey color when your health is at stake? The nicotine gum *never* helped.

Also staying active and getting lots of exercise seemed to help - I didn't feel like smoking after an hour or two at the gym.

I also bought some of those embarrassing "lady" brand cigarettes - you know, the brands that come in pink boxes or with flowers on them. I figured I would be too embarrassed to smoke them in public, and I was right. They also tasted like shit, which was another thing that helped turn me off to tobacco.

I've got all kinds of tips, but I'm on my way out the door, so maybe I'll check in tomorrow. Good luck!

Kerry Keane, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Okay, put yourself in the mindset of wanting a cigarette. How relaxing and beautiful it would be. Think how hard it'll be to live without that. Then think "why on earth and i being so negative and defeatist about this? christ, it's not like i'm coming off the horse. must stop being pathetic, i'll just not fucking smoke."

it worked for me. stop thinking about how hard it might be. and if you get uptight, go do something else relaxing. cup of tea. masturbate. anything. giving up smoking is easy if you want it to be. i did it, and look at me now. an alcoholic, i am!

JM, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

why do you need to quit?

Geoff, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I've never been a smoker, but of those of my friends who have been or are the only ones who have suceeded in giving up by saying, 'right from now on I will not smoke'. Its wasn't easy for them but they made sure everyone knew what they were doing and people around them made sure that they didn't give into temptation.

By contrast everyone I've know who's tried a nicotine replacement therapy has failed, its too easy to see it as the easy way and not go through al of the will power stuff.

The tea thing is a very good idea as it gives you something to do when you want a fag. Aso its a nice mild stimulant . Stock up on some herbal teas, none of that fruit rubbish, but peppermint, camonmile and especially verveine if you have any trouble going to sleep.

If you skin up try to use the most feeble cigarettes you can find, silk cut ultra or the like, you will not be tempted to smoke these.

If you have any smoking flatmates ask them to take it outside and ask them not to give you a cigarette no matter how much you plead.

Good Luck

Ed, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well, it's just a very bad habit which has snuck up on me as a consequence of having 'leftovers' from smoking the other Demon Weed (note to North Americans: tobacco is used to pad out one's J here in Blighty). Is yours a rhetorical question? It wastes time and money and makes the hangovers I do get much worse than they would otherwise be. Bad for skin and lungs. Bad for taste buds. I am, it has to be said, a latecomer to the whole cigarette experience, am still under 10 a day and was totally militant about not smoking them until about four years ago when I was stuck in a bereavement situation with 40-a-day family members and no spliff. It should THEORETICALLY be easy to stop but in practice seems impossible. Plus, you lot are intelligent and might be able to think of good, proven ways that don't involve pills, patches or whatever.

suzy, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yeah why do you poms put TOBACCO in a fuckin J? that's nuts. I don't wanna sound like Tarden here (well OK I do, that guy is cool) but it's like just 'cause you're British you deliberately gotta make everything a bit crappier.

duane, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Makes your eighth last 7 days, mainly, but I can see your point. And I'm not a Pom.

suzy, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Dunno how well it works for cigarettes but I am cutting down on my pop ("soda") consumption by drinking lots of chocolate milk instead. Having an alternative = good.

Josh, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Also a NZ friend of mine commented on how much stronger and more expensive our weed is.

It think it stems from al ot of the north europena stuff being grown indoors, so you need bigger yields from smaller numbers of plants.

Ed, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Stronger? A New Zealander said that? How fucking unpatriotic.
Suzy - yeah I already knew you weren't a pom, you said 9something)(somewhere). I was talking to these fucking poms.

duane, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

DON'T use substitutes.
Use aversion therapy instead. Look at all the ugly people in England who smoke, it's enough to make you lose your lunch.

tarden, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

you do have the perfect diversion though. Gastroporn. YOu can't smoke in the kitchen so you'll just have cook and bake instead, and entertain us with the recipes of course.

Ed, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yeah, right. If I do that, I will find myself over on the I Have A Big Ass thread faster than you can say tagliatelle carbonara. I reckon the delightful Ms Keane has a point about exercise. I never felt like smoking cigs on their own until I started spending way too much time indoors.

suzy, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I did manage to give up for six months or so by buying nothing but Old Holborn rolling tobacco and king size Rizla. Smoking a king size roll up containing nowt but OH makes me want to barf -> good aversion therapy. However, the combination of drinking and someone waving a packet of Marlboro Lights in my face eventually knocked me off the wagon. I gave up for good 2 years ago, but that was a will power alone job really. Unless you count the huge piles of biros I've chewed to death since then.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

no suzy, twasn't rhetorical - I'm an avid smoker, so was just curious...as to giving up, eat an apple just before you have your smoke - you'll vomit, but it'll stop you from either eating apples or smoking...obviously I haven't had an apple for years.

Geoff, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

It took me a good dozen attempts to finally quit. Got to the stage that the nicotene-withdrawal attempts didn't bother me so much, but after a couple of months the 'novelty' of not smoking wore off and I couldn't resist 'just one'. What finally did it for me as a) the realisation that if I didn't stop it would probably kill me and b) the smell of smoking tobacco would always be appealing to me, I just had to accept it and live without it. 2.5 years on I'm still off. There are no easy ways suzy, but if millions can do it, many with less will power than you, you can too. I wish you every success.

stevo, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

"I tried to quit smoking, then I noticed how bad everything smelled. Then I went back to smoking." Frank Zappa (who chain-smoked till he died [of something other than lung cancer, FWIW]).

That said, I really should quit. Longest I went was a month. I get over the nicotine withdrawal in a day or two -- get really crabby and high-strung during that time (as if anyone would notice any change hee) and that's that. It's always the habit part of it that gets to me -- it's sinister how cigarettes wend their way into just about every aspect of your life and how you don't notice that until they're gone.

Due to my extended illness last year I stopped for about 6 months, but the sudden ressurection of my social life meant that smoking was inevitable.

DG, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Um, does this mean no sky-picnic smoking then? Ulp. Having watched Neil Pearson being John Diamond and dying of throat cancer thereby losing the power of speech and eating (= my 2 favourite things) I am a bit traumatised by my bad habit.

Emma, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Emma: you got to see the Diamond play? Lucky you. Apparently the opening party was full of folks chuffing away. Smoking in all its myriad forms (and I note, especially in some of its more myriad forms) is of course totally welcome at the picnic. My restrictions are an aspiration for me, not you guys, and as it goes I'm still smoking the vile little things at this writing anyway.

suzy, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The John Diamond thing was pretty good, as it was just excerpts from some of his more entertaining and insightful columns oddly acted out by Neil Pearson. The bit where he starts smoking again near the end is really rather good at explaining why people smoke at all.

I enjoy a cigar.

Pete, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

btw the party thread has dropped off the bottom so I'll say this here

just a warning its looking 50.50 wether I make it or not. I'm trying very hard to take some exams but I can't find any professors to take them with. So just to say you might like to secure a blender from somewhere else.

Ed, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

use a nicorette inhaler. I went -reasonably painlessly- from a Jacques Brel level of chaining (40-60 a day) to zilch with its aid. I had tried willpower in the past but a. resembled Nick Cotton sweating, desperate and mockney as he came off "horse" and b. started again as soon as something bad/good/indifferent happened to me. I haven't smoked cigarettes in a year: the best thing is that you begin to sleep more restfully due to increased lung capacity.

Alasdair, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I've seen someone coming off Horse and in the end it is all about the psychological addiction. Coming off of H physically is like a very, very bad bout of flu for about a week. Its the psychological addiction which is very difficult to crush.

Coming off of nutmeg is nigh on impossible.

Pete, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Not the play, Suzy, the tv thing. Heaven forbid I should leave the house on a Sunday night.

The thing with nicorette inhalers is they look exceedingly daft. I am sure a lot of non smokers think proper fags look daft too but those inhalers look like Tampax tubes or something. Ick.

Emma, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh shit, fuck, bollocks. Duh, it used to be a play written by one of those columnist girls who looks all Daddy, I Want A Pony in her byline picture. Anyone tape this? John Diamond was SO cool. Grapevine tells me Nige is currently biting C. Saatchi.

I was out at Japanese food dinner drinking saké and smoking far too many Camel Lights. By the time I got home all there was to watch was bastard David fucking Mamet film. Em, you're right about Nicorette holders, surely they are tamponic demonic.

suzy, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

You should just stop. If you really want to, you will, just like if you really don't want to, you won't. No amount of anything else will help you stop, no patches or inhalers or diversion techniques, believe me. You have to actually want to.

That being said, starting up some vicious cardiovascular training exercise, like cardio boot camp, will help you stop smoking because you will be breathless 24/7 otherwise.

Ally, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The TV thing was adapted from the play supposedly written by Victoria CoreN (daughter of Call My Bluffster Alan Coren and he himself tedious columnist banging on amusingly albeit more amusing than he makes it sound Cricklewood). VC is all pony, but was more "can Daddy get me a column in a national newspaper". He could. The play itself was pretty well structured which is all Coren had to do since I believe it was just excerpts from his Times column.

Nigella must be stepping out with Charlie Saatchi as my mum told me therefore it must be true (she used to know the Saatchis back in the day. She says). I disapprove as it diminishes the Poor Tragic Nigella image I have of her. My mum approves because he's Jewish so it's OK.

Their little boy Bruno is the dead spit of his dad though. It must be weird having a son who so resembles your dead hubby.

Emma, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I don't think Nigella is dating Mr Saatchi, just getting him to pick up the tab in restaurants. Which he is eminently qualified to do.

Pete, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Pete is just jealous cos he wants Nigella all to himself.

Aggggh, Vicky Coren. Friends who know her say she's OK (and her bro Giles is Times diarist) but agggggh, newspaper nepotism drives me up the wall. Blame the New Feudalism; I do. It's actually very rare that a twentysomething female is given a UK column who doesn't have a Media Daddy; the only one I can think of is Zoe Williams, who is ace.

suzy, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Quitting smoking can be fun if you look at it from the correct perspective; you have a free license to be cranky, stubborn, and irritable with few repurcussions for about a week.

Dan Perry, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Suzy, you CAN'T be serious abt Zoe Williams, surely?

Andrew L, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Decca Aitkenhead: is she someone's relative? I think she's good. Used to be.

mark s, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yes Andrew, I was serious about Zoe. I KNOW she writes for the Evening Bastard but for example was the only person in that camp to write positively about May Day and she isn't a total blando. Also I've met her loads of times and she's actually really nice.

suzy, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

B-b-ut Suzy. She writes, like, really boring 'use other ideas please' rubbish. And wasn't she behind that truly dreadful '101 things we can do without' feature in the first glossy Guardian Weekend? That was like an ILE thread from some parallel 'idiot' universe.

I'm sure she's very nice though, so you call her 'ace' all you like.

Nick, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Nope I'm with Suzy here, I rather like Zoe Williams stuff too. It was better when she was in the ES magazine which was all rather candid and racy stuff about her piss poor relationship. The Sluts Guide can tend towards Use Other Ideaisms but she does have a good style and the one on beer was hilarious.

In the end nepotism is where its at in so many businesses.

Pete, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Mark, you'll sick yourself, but Decca Aitkenhead was Charlotte Raven's flatmate for years.

Zoe Williams: DUD!!!!!!

Robin Carmody, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

In the Guardian I'd agree totally, Robin. But part of the problem with being a columnist is often the editor is telling you what to write and most eds. in majority of newspapers are dolts and suckers for Use Other Ideas, Please.

I quit on March 5th. I've only broken down and had 1 when I was completely drunk.

I find that coffee helps the after meal cravings - though I know it makes some people want to smoke more.

Also, always try to have something in mind to look forward to.

Finally, have you read Cigarettes Are Sublime? It's smoking neutral, but certainly one of the best meditations on the habit.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 16:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, Cigarettes Are Sublime was given to me last time I tried to quit! (nabisco, did I lend that to you and if so can you bring it to the ChiFAP?)

suzy's great advice was to have an aspirin or Tylenol first thing in the morning to dull the nic-fit craving.

shopping does help. I spend hours in Amoeba two or three times a week.

Also, don't consider yourself a quitter. Say, "I didn't quit, I am now a non-smoker", and don't let people congratulate you too much or be 'proud' of you - Mom!

six years pass...

The Food and Drug Administration banned Tuesday the sale of fruit- and candy-flavored cigarettes in the U.S., hoping to rid the market of products that the agency says make smoking more attractive to children.

While flavored cigarettes make up a tiny fraction of tobacco products sold, the move marks the first major step made by the FDA since it was given the power this year to regulate tobacco products. The next step? The agency will look into whether other flavored tobacco products - including popular menthols - will also be barred from U.S. store shelves.

"Almost 90 percent of adult smokers started smoking as teenagers," Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg, the FDA's commissioner, told reporters. "These flavored cigarettes are a gateway for many children and young adults to become regular smokers."

The niche products, sold in flavors such as vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, are mostly made by smaller firms or imported from overseas. The ban also includes the more popular clove cigarettes, which have been illegal in Maryland for almost 20 years.

It is unclear whether small cigars, sold across inner-city Baltimore under brand names such as Black & Mild, would be affected by the ban. Some of those products also have fruit flavors, and the FDA says some products called cigars are actually cigarettes.

Dr. Lawrence R. Deyton, the director of the FDA's new Center for Tobacco Products, pointed to research that found that flavored cigarettes, which take some of the edge off a strong tobacco taste, appeal to young people. He said 17-year-old smokers are three times as likely to use flavored cigarettes as smokers over 25.

"The reason for this ban ... is to protect our children from initiating tobacco use," he said.

At Fader's, a tobacco shop in Towson, manager Jim Gray wasn't buying that. About 5 percent of his business was in flavored cigarettes. "Our main customer base was women between the ages of 22 and 50. It wasn't girls who just turned 18 and wanted to try a flavored cigarette."

Gray just learned of the ban in the past two weeks, when he got a letter from the FDA. Customers who could afford to, stocked up, and those who like the vanilla or chocolate smokes were angry.

"They feel like the government is taking away something they enjoy," he said. "They're grown adults. They should be able to decide what's good for them or bad for them. Officials use the excuse of doing it for the children to get the laws passed. We're not selling to children."

At The Other Side, another Towson tobacco shop, owner Jason Cerrato said he is still reeling from the new federal tax on roll-your-own tobacco, which added a $2.50 per pouch fee, nearly doubling the price.

"In this economy, they're supposed to be helping small businesses instead of hurting them," he said. "If kids are going to smoke, you're going to tell me that without flavoring, they're not going to? If they want to smoke, they'll buy something else."

The FDA is taking several steps to enforce the ban. Consumers are being asked to report violators, and border officials will be on the lookout for illegal shipments.

I had no idea this was happening, but this seems like such a tremendous move. I mean, who would think that the FDA would be able to ban tobacco products at all.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out with "other flavored tobacco products", which are probably most commonly used to roll blunts.

I think there was a recent ruling that allowed the FDA to regulate/ban tobacco products.

But wait, is this article saying the FDA has banned clove cigarettes? Wtf?

Flavored cigarettes = buh-bye. Actually I think this rule is shit and never should have gotten passed at all. Why didn't we hear about it til it happened, basically? If it was made into law 90 days ago, was there no publicity around the deliberation?

that stupid-ass cannibal pen-pal of yours (Laurel), Wednesday, 23 September 2009 17:35 (fifteen years ago) link

The ban comes three months after President Obama signed legislation giving the F.D.A. the authority to regulate tobacco products, which had $96 billion in sales in 2008, with $87 billion in cigarette sales; $4 billion in cigar, small cigar and cigarillo sales; and $4.6 billion in chewing tobacco, snuff and loose tobacco sales. Recently, domestic manufacturers, anticipating a ban, largely halted production of flavored cigarettes, less than 1 percent of the market, but imports have been widely available.

they were supposed to have taken Prime Times ("little cigars" that are basically flavored cigs) off the market a couple years ago, at least in California, but you can still find them around. Wonder if this will affect swishers and other blunt-type products.

xp Laurel - I agree. I read about FDA being given regulatory authority, but the ban on flavored cigarettes isn't something I knew of until this thread. In the past, I'd get a pack of cloves maybe once a month or something, generally during the rainy season or to take to a party.

jjusten - what about Lucky Strike filterless?

oops, i should clarify.

this type of stuff=notice of proposed rulemaking. in other words, when the FDA's getting ready to issue a rule, they post a notice about it in the Federal Register, inviting people to comment. newspapers/media don't report on this part.

and you're right, they report on the part when the agency issues the regulation

Five weeks without a smoke TODAY. The last five weeks have included several trips to bars, tailgaiting at a football game, and a trip to Vegas.

While I more than likely inhaled more than a cigarette's worth of smoke while in the casinos in Vegas, I did not actually smoke one.

GO ME.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 23 September 2009 18:17 (fifteen years ago) link

I have smoked off and on, but mostly on, for the past 15 years. Never heavy, but it was time to just cut it the fuck out.

since then, I have increased my cardio workout at the gym to 45 min., on my way to an entire hour, and I am able to completely ignore hangovers. And, my singing voice has a lot more power to it.

I don't want to become one of those ASSHOLE anti-smokers. But damn, I feel SO much better.

Adventures of Dog Boy and Frank Sobotka (B.L.A.M.), Wednesday, 23 September 2009 18:19 (fifteen years ago) link

I've been at a pack a day for 17 years now ... I went to the gym last night and thought about quitting, but it seemed too extreme at this point.

i was only a pack-a-day smoker in the first bloom of the habit. i can't imagine doing it for 17 years - tbh though i think quitting without artificial aid after that is probably more hardcore than carrying on

I'm quite sad about cloves :(

I guess they've always been illegal over here cos I've never seen them sold anywhere in the UK, but I had a great night out in NYC on my birthday several years that involved a girl and a tin of Djarum cigarettes. I tried another brand of cloves on another US trip but they were shite. The Djarum ones were really nice though, for a change at least, I doubt I could smoke them very often.

Two years ago tomorrow I smoked the last cigarette in the pack, per the instructions in the Allan Carr book, and I haven't had one since. I smoked for fucking EVER and "quit" several times, once for over a year, but this is the longest I've been without cigarettes since adolescence, and I've been through several crises without even wanting to smoke - really remarkable for me. So, fuck yeah.
