FAP with Forest Pines on August 14th (and possibly the 12th and 13th too)

Yes, I know I already started this thread. But I'm too lazy to find it; and also the old thread didn't have the date in the title.

I've never tried to organise a FAP before, and meetups I've tried to organise at Other Internet Places have always been disastrous. But here goes nothing anyway.

I'm going to be in London from August 12th to the 15th, and I thought it might be nice to have a FAP on the afternoon of Sunday 14th. I suggested a bit of a walk followed by food and drink. Someone else suggested drinks on one of the floating bars on the Thames. Does anyone else have any other ideas to try out?

Also, I might be up for a quiet drink-and-chat on the evening of the 12th, if anyone else is. Have to confirm that with the friend I'm staying with, though.

This evening after work, I shall walk along the embankment and check out the ship situation - try to figure out which ones are open Sunday, not too expensive and OK with drinks only.

I originally suggested a bit of a walk. A walk would still be nice. If we're going to end up along the Embankment then maybe it could be something like a River Fleet walk, or maybe a part-of-the-Circle-line.

Anyway!

There are two spooky walks which look GRATE!!! The first is "Gaslit Ghosts, The Temple and Fleet Street" which is all spooky Temple stuff, and the other is "The Blackfriars Walk". Both of these leave from Blackfriars Station, so it would be very easy to do both!

Also, there is a good Clerkenwell spookiness walk (though honestly I don't need a book at this point to list all the weirdness around the Fleet)! (If you want to double up and do two walks, it's right by the Bloomsbury Spooky walk, as well.)

Shall we say meet at Blackfriars station at 1pm?

Well, even if it is, everyone should come and meet me instead!

The Temple one would be nice - and Masonic too! - but I'd be worried that it wouldn't be doable on a Sunday if all the little courts and courtyards were closed off.

That sounds like a good idea for a meet - but do you mean the underground or overground station? I know both are fairly small, so it shouldn't be hard to spot each other.

Actually, that whole station is a horrible mess and almost impossible to find anyone at, due to all the tunnels down to the embankment and Thames walk and stuff. We had this problem last time we did the River Fleet walk...

How about we meet at the Blackfriars pub itself? Even if it's closed, there's a nice little area with tables and flowers and things outside.

Archel: I think all Thameslink trains stop at all stations from the Widened Lines to Blackfriars Bridge, but I haven't used them for a long time so I could be wrong on that

And yes, the pub is above the Station. On the bridge approach thingey above the Fleet Canal.

(Be careful with the Thameslink on Sundays, though. I took it back from Harpenden on Sunday evening, and got off at Kings Cross to transfer to the Sutton Loop - only to find out there was no Sutton Loop that evening. So I took the next train (grrr) to London Bridge, only to find that there were NOOOOO STREATHAM TRAINS AT ALL!!! ARRRGGHHHH!!! Not like they warned me about that anywhere. So I had to take the bus and it took me two and a half hours to make a return journey that had taken me 45 minutes to get out there. Sigh.)

Mmm, Thameslink has always been like that - I remember when it first started,* and waiting for hours with my parents at Farringdon for a Sevenoaks train, before we realised that my dad had been looking at the wrong timetable and Thameslink weren't running any Sevenoaks trains at all that day.

* I mean in the 1980s - before then, the Snow Hill line (the Farringdon-Blackfriars bit) had had passenger trains, but only until the First World War.

If you fall out with someone - no matter what the reasons - you can only withdraw from the situation yourself. If you try to make a big deal out of it, and try to draw your friends into it, you will only end up alienating your friends. They will not hate the person that you hate over it, they will end up hating *you* for perceivedly trying to force them to choose.

I find it difficult to understand how some people on ILx can't accept that other ILxors might be doing something else on a particular day which they consider a better way of spending their time than hanging out with the people in question (regardless of whether it's a better way to spend time or not). I'm sorry, but I really fail to see the connection. I am aware that there has been bad blood between you and Ken in the past, but I have refused to let it affect my friendship with and experience of *either* of you. And I resent the implication that somehow, just by going to a club with a bunch of my friends, I'm somehow being disloyal to you.

Everybody's action has to be revolved around you hasn't it? Gosh, we announced a club that we have been planning for for two months, and boo-hoo "there's no way you're gonna show up" and so therefore everyone else should change their plans to suit you otherwise it's a personal insult? a little petuallant? Friday isn't even my club, I have to do with about 1/5 of it (if that)

Look, I'm logging out because I don't want to get screamed at for being mean, and if the mods want to reveal who I am, fair enough.

But this thread is really frustrating. I was thinking about coming to the FAP on Sunday. I was also planning on going to the club night on Friday. I didn't consider this to be a 'POO: Ken or Forest Pines' for several reasons-- the club night was listed well before this thread started, this thread was mostly about Sunday, the plans for Friday seem vague and not something I'm interested in (I'd rather dance than go for a walk.) Plus, I actually know Ken, primarily because we both live in London.

But bitching about Ken, and trying to turn this into a popularity contest, has totally turned me off coming to any of these. I suspect the same goes for other people as well, but who knows. I really have to say that when planning to introduce yourself to a new bunch of people, starting off aggressive and challenging might not be the best approach.

I sincerely hope you have a nice visit, and hope that you (yes, both of you, including Ken) can stop sniping and just get over it. I don't know what went on between you, and frankly don't care. Sorry I won't be meeting you this weekend.

Definition:

The "courtly love" relationship is modelled on the feudal relationship between a knight and his liege lord. The knight serves his courtly lady (love service) with the same obedience and loyalty which he owes to his liege lord. She is in complete control of the love relationship, while he owes her obedience and submission (a literary convention that did not correspond to actual practice!) The knight's love for the lady inspires him to do great deeds, in order to be worthy of her love or to win her favor. Thus "courtly love" was originally construed as an ennobling force whether or not it was consummated, and even whether or not the lady knew about the knight's love or loved him in return.

One can understand how you could get this mixed up with Courtney Love...

I'm trying to get a dog for our walk. On all our walks, especially the country ones, we keep saying how much nicer it would be if we had a dog. Emsk and I wanted to set up a dog exchange/rental organisation. I wonder if we could set one up with the Battersea Dogs Home or something.

But not these horrible little yappie dogs that people in the city have. A proper dog. Maybe a dalmation. I saw someone walking a liver spotted dalmation the other day, and it was the CUTEST DOG ON EARTH!!!

(I knew I should have nicked that enourmous dog/pony cross breed from Essex, but Ed wouldn't let me bring him on the train.)

Anyway, it does not have to be a dalmation. Just so long as it is not a stupid, ginger, pointy-nosed Irish Setter. (Being stupid, ginger, pointy nosed and Irish is only an advantage in men, not in dogs.) A decent pub will not only let you bring in a dog, it will give it water in a (clean) ashtray, as well. My old local had a dog-friendly sign in the window, so I have a feeling there is probably a website that lists all the pubs that have signed up with that scheme.

Actually, that's true. There probably aren't many dog friendly pubs in The City. (There was that one in Islington, where Colette had her birthday party but that might be a bit far. Aparently the owner's dog has his own agent because he is so photogenic.)

i was at the tatersall castle last summer, and i seem to remember one floor is a fancy restaurant, but the outside deck bit isn't that expensive, and they have bar-ish food up there as well (like hot dogs and chips and stuff)

The Tattershall Castle is not posh. It was refitted and redecorated last year, badly, in a vain attempt to attract a different kind of clientele. It failed - still full of civil servants from the MOD and DWP (on weekdays) and bemused tourists. Stay on the outside deck, it's the least fancy. Prices no different from anywhere in WC2 really.
