Denver has the second oldest sister city in the United States with its relationship with Brest, France started in 1948. In 1947, Amanda Knecht, a teacher at East High School, visited WWII ravaged Brest. When she came back, she shared her experiences in the city with her students, and her class raised $32,000 in change to help rebuild the children's wing of Brest's hospital. I think I've spent a total of about 36 hours in Denver in my life, most of them at Elich's, or sleeping at someone else's house overnight, or going with my parents to get my sister orthopedic shoes. This was in the late 1980's. goddamned right I hated it!

I am very much biased against colorado now but only because of all the horrible white republicans and christian coalitian types. If you killed all the people in the state it would be grand! (er, Mandee excepted)

my aunt and uncle live in THE SPRINGS and the only times I've actually been in Denver was to see the mint and stuck in a traffic jam while on the way home after a 2week Southwest road trip. I was not surprised by its flatness, since yanno, it's flat for more than 1000 miles til you hit the Rockies.

Denver is flat, except for a little bitty rise when you go up to the Capitol building, and the area to the east of it, which is called Capitol Hill, of all things. Denver has the largest Gay Pride march betw. the Mississippi and California, or so someone once told me. Everyone assembles at Cheesman Park and then walks to Civic Center, except the ones who are riding on floats.

Denver has frequent temperature shifts. Once the temperature dropped 60 degrees in 8 hours. This was not fun for the trees.

I have a question of importance to me. What do you do to entertain your parents in Denver? Or, more accurately, not what do you do to entertain your parents in Denver, since if you're Mandee, your parents are probably about my age, whereas my parents are my parents' age.

I will take my parents to the Botanic Gardens, of course. I have a good friend on staff at the gardens. She is an expert in invasive plant species, which we refer to affectionately as "weeds." She just married her girlfriend. The ceremony was in the gardens, in the section called the Romantic Garden. The ceremony was romantic. My friend Chris brought soap bubbles, which we blew above the two brides after they'd said their vows. It was a Jewish ceremony; they had to stomp on the glasses several times to get them to break. The rabbi, a woman, said that she hoped that the state would soon recognize such marriages. At the reception, we danced to a techno version of Hava Nagilah. We also danced to "Crazy In Love" and "We Are Family."

i always try to take my parents to RODNEY's - which is seriously like this bar where all the OLD PEOPLE hang out! I went there on a Friday night once and it was full of senior citizens (CLASSY PEOPLE, EVEN) gettin' their GUZZLIN' going...

it's in cherry creek north on 2nd avenue, sort of down the street from whole foods..

I'm always trying to get my friends to go there but they aren't as excited about it as I am.

Denver, Colorado: Denver was once so renowned for its pure
mountain air that tuberculosis victims traveled there for treatment. However, in 1985, Denver was under a "brown cloud" much of the time. Pollutants from motor vehicles, industry, and wood stoves clouded the skies and obscured the view of the Rocky Mountains that made the Mile High City a major tourist attraction. The city violated federal carbon monoxide exposure limits 33 days during the winter of 1985.
The public, as well as businesses and community leaders, demanded that something be done to bring clean, healthful air back to Denver. Responding to these concerns, the governor established the Denver Metro Air Quality Council. With technical support from EPA and the Colorado Health Department, the Council mobilized public and governmental action, worked with industries, civic groups, and the news media to help remove the area's brown cloud and clean its air. How did they do it?
- New legislation required use of oxygenated fuels during the
winter months to reduce cold weather carbon monoxide
emissions from gasoline engines. Automobile owners'
individual participation helped make this successful.
- The Denver schools switched from diesel fuels to compressed
natural gas in new school buses.
- The state avoided legislation that would have delayed
implementation of strict emission standards for wood stoves.
- Wood burning in the area was limited.
- The local electric utility replaced particulate-emitting
coal fires in powerhouse boilers with a mix of "clean"
natural gas and coal. The public bus company converted to
low-sulfur fuel during the high-pollution season, tested
methanol-fueled buses, and implemented an emissions
inspection and maintenance program for its vehicles.
- The public, including employees and shoppers, found ways to
drive fewer miles.

What did it all add up to? Carbon monoxide violations dropped
from thirty-three in 1985 to only three in 1990. Average daily
ozone (smog) levels for the ten highest days dropped
considerably. In June of 1990, the United States Conference of
Mayors called Denver "the most liveable city in the United
States."

I thought it was grand! It's funny someone mentioned a brown building, I couldn't believe how brown Denver was when I went there, it kinda amazed me. So beautiful in the evenings, with the fading whiteblue complementary sky.

I'm always trying to get my friends to go there but they aren't as excited about it as I am.

I used to live two or three blocks from Rodney's in the early 90s. I remember downing scotch there like 12 years ago with a buddy, and it was actually really disturbing and depressing to my then young mind. It was like, "is this what I have to look forward to? These people?"

winter isn't so bad. There are still LOTS of sunny days. A lot of the big snow storms happen in SPRING or FALL, actually. And the mountains get most of the snow and then it misses here. There might be just enough snow to build a snow man or go sledding or do something equally montagey.

Recently, I went to the Denver Aquarium (formerly Ocean Journey) and it was pretty boring beside the sharks and the simulation of a flash flood on the plains which is narrated by Mike Nelson. I guess I walked away with some good pictures, though.

Actually, there are two on the corner of Santa Fe and 7th; the one that I've been to looks like a diner, basically.

But nothing I've had is as good as the burritos at Pancho Villa's, in San Francisco (16th and Valencia).

Lakeside is sad during the day, because you can see the wear and tear that the park has been through. There's the closed Staride (which Rhoda, the owner, doesn't want to part with for whatever reason, and thus keeps in its place), the peeling paint on the Cyclone, the faded Roundup (most exciting ride in the world!), etc. Then, you go at night, and all the neon and 30s architecture works its magic. Plus the rides there are actually good (Cyclone is fun, the Wild Chipmunk is a classic wild mouse, the whip and flyers are in good shape, it has one of the best park trains in existence etc).

Elitch's is just a total dump. Its flat, architecturally uninspired, filled with generic rides that can be found everywhere else in the world; not a single ride in the entirety of the park is an original or custom model. And they're not run particularly well either. Twister II, the redo of the original that sat at the original Elitch's, is utter garbage; a perennial cellar pick on every coaster poll ever done. Its especially sad considering that the original was considered to be one of the best rides on the planet. The food costs $10 for a hotdog, fries, and a coke. The whole place is surrounded by parking lot, railyard, and a river. There's only one admission price for adults, so if you go, you better want to go on rides (Lakeside? Its a $1 to get in, then tickets or wristband should you want to go on stuff). Its everything Lakeside isn't, and the world needs a lot less Elitch's and a lot more Lakesides.

I've heard nothing but good things about the old Elitch's. It actually had gardens (the new Six Flagsized version has a flower clock, and that's about it), had unique rides, had personality, all that. Then the owners at the time decided to move the park. Initally, they wanted to move to a larger location. Then the city offered them a prime spot downtown with tons of tax breaks to help in revitalization. Only catch: it was actually SMALLER than their old location. The family decided then to get out of the game and move the park anyways, sell it after construction and opening, and then cut with the money. They did just that. Premier Parks (now Six Flags) entered the picture, bought the park with money they didn't have, upgraded it with more money they didn't have, and that's where we stand today.

At least the mexican community around Lakeside populates the park enough to keep the business up. Rhoda also owns a lot of real estate, and the park is her hobby. The fear though is exactly what will take place once she dies (as the land the park is on is prime for condos, and lacks expansion space for a major chain to be interested).

I have never been to lakeside, I do remember the last time I went to Elitches, though. It was with Melinda and Scott Beiser, and it was nighttime and raining and for some reason that made the whole experience creepy in a fun way.

Lakeside and Elitch's were fairly close together, but were entirely different parks. By close together, I mean like a 5-10 minute drive. The new Elitch's opened in 1995 and was sold within a year to Premier Parks.

(part of the justification for building in a smaller location than the original was that amusement rides in the future would be simulator based. of course, this never came close to reality, and this Six Flags is stuck buying rides with tiny footprints, or just not buying rides at all)

The original Elitch's was bulldozed in 1999 and replaced with condos. There was a lot of work to try and move the Twister, as it was a classic of a ride, but the large footprint, the increasingly dilapidated structure as years passed without maintenance, and the fact that it intertwined with the parks other wood coaster, the Wildcat, basically doomed it. Another attempt at rebuilding the Twister was put up at Knoebels, a family run park in PA that's become legendary for being a halfway house of sorts for some of the best rides ever built once their mother parks close down. However, the third attempt, while better than the Twister II that stands in downtown, doesn't match the original. It has a strong first half, but peters out after going through the signature double helix and doesn't do a whole lot of anything.

The old Elitch's stood for a while and I wish I coulda seen it one last time before it got bulldozed. As for Cedar Point... I don't know. When I went there the lines were sooo long, and it was sooo hot/humid, and the people were sooo "Ohio" (I lived in Ohio for two years and don't know how I can describe them except to say "Ohio", which basically means they seemed culture-less, driftless, bland as oatmeal, and had a slightly trashy tinge). Plus when we were driving back on I-80 some freakazoid tornado or massive lake gale or something just about blew my car off the road and it sort of tainted the whole experience. Obviously Cedar Point is a superior park, but it just doesn't have the sentimental value of the old Elitch's for me.

And I still haven't been to Lakeside.

My parents tell me that they have fond memories of Elitch's Gardens, but given that the last time we visited the Gardens as a family was in 1956, a return trip would likely prove disappointing to them. We are going to see a movie about penguins instead.

I don't remember Elitch's from 1956, when I was two, in fact remember nothing about Denver 1956 except for ICE CREAM!

Huh. The penguins were playing last week at Landmark Chez Artiste on Colorado Blvd., where we saw "Grizzly Man" with our daughter.

Lakeside and Elitch's were fairly close together, but were entirely different parks. By close together, I mean like a 5-10 minute drive.

Like I said above: Lakeside during the day is sad. Lakeside at night is a more attractive park than Tivoli Gardens at night. Which is to say, its really, really, really nice looking. The art deco with neon looks outstanding.

(for those reading in the northeast, a similar, albiet far more expensive and more visited/better maintained example of a similar facility would be Rye Playland, just outside NYC)

Penguin movie amazing to look at, and told a straightforward story without too much gooey goo; but I was a bit dissappointed. I wanted it to be more about evolution, I guess, about how/why these behaviors developed, not just about the incredible behaviors themselves. I had a relative complain recently about Denver's homeless population.

A.) Of all the things I've heard negative about Denver, it's always been "bland", "too far away from everything", "expensive", etc. I hadn't heard complaints about the transient population, though.

B.) I still don't get complaints about homeless people. You may get an occassional aggressive dude, just like you may get the occassional someone at the table next to yours incessantly jabbering into his cellphone. Besides that, they're just people who have a lot more problems than you do.

C.) Even if I were to bitch about homeless people, how could I possibly start with Denver? Those hobo's riding unicycles down the avenues of Berkeley, now THERE are some people I can roll my eyes at.

i don't live in denver, but i work there.
i think denver's cool, can't really put my finger on any *real* cons. I think compared to some cities, it might seems a tad boring/personality-less, but once you dig a little deeper there's plenty going on. some people complain about traffic (sometimes I do, too), but really, if you've lived in any other big-ish city, the traffic is not really remarkable.

Brooklyn. New York City often feels like too much for me although it's unlikely that I'll pick up and move to Denver.

Good things I noticed:
Never felt too crowded
Nice residential neighborhoods right in the city within a walk or short drive of commercial areas
Lots of green space
Love the stadiums being right downtown in a nice commercial area (we got $4 rockpile tickets, sat at a local brewery for a bit, waltzed right in for the 3rd-8th innings of the game, and then walked out)
Community -- my friend who I was staying with had several neighbors he was friendly with. I also noticed that it was easy for him to get several other people to show up for the game on short notice.
People generally care a lot about fitness and the outdoors

Negatives:
Did seem a little clean-cut and unvaried
Some parts were a little too empty
Felt like maybe it could get boring

yeah, i think you can definitely stumble across parts of Denver that just feel like dull office parks where no one ever goes. but a bunch of the neighborhoods (wash park, s. broadway, highlands) really have nice, classic atmospheres. and downtown is surprisingly packed with stuff these days -- tons of great restaurants, awesome places to drink beer (a big part of my job currently is this: www.denverbeerfest.com), one of the better bookstores in the world ... oh, lotsa medicinal marijuana these days too.

dunno, i think one of the main problems with the perception of Denver, is that there's not a lot of romance/mystique surrounding it. when you tell people you live/work in Denver they're like "oh ..."

oh, i just live in Longmont. i originally moved to/worked in boulder, and then my wife and i wanted to buy a house, and longmont is much cheaper than boulder. and then i ended up getting a job in Denver. fortunately i work from home half of the time, so i don't have to make the commute every day.

It's definitely a place where you kind of have to know a local to find the good stuff. Lots of people come here and stay downtown, wander around LoDo and the 16th street mall and crap and that's their only impression of the city. There's a lot more. It could stand to be more interesting, but the good news is that it's getting more and more so--there's a lot of support for local music and art, the weather doesn't totally suck, and there is the world's largest hobby train shoppe on south broadway (according to its signage).

I can never tell whether people think it's a cool event, or just sort of lame. i feel like they don't do a good job of really engaging with the arts community, it just ends up being "there are galleries and museums" check em out.

however, when I made Adam start this thread in 2005 I was WAY more into Denver then. When I first moved here, in 2002 it was amazing. It was dirt cheap (I shared an apartment and my rent was $200/month) and there were all sorts of interesting things going on. I am sure there are interesting things still going on, but I'm just older and more into staying home and grumping around.

Another thing is that it's very easy to meet people here. Folks are interested in getting to know you. I definitely hear from friends who have moved to other places that they miss that about Denver.

These things may be entirely my imagination, and I have no idea if the people I saw were even Denverites, but I was in Denver's airport last night (on the way from Philadelphia to Albuquerque) and I don't think I've ever seen so many guys striding around like cowboys. It's like there really is this macho thing going on that is totally not the urban sort of macho I'm used to, more ranch macho. I also swear I have never had so many women looking at me with appreciation at one time (not counting when I dance, when women who otherwise would never notice me suddenly start smiling at me). Is the male-to-female ratio really that tough there? But as I say, it could just be my imagination or at least the filters I had on regarding Denver. Plus I was just exhausted and desperate to get home.

I'm a Boulderite. Well, actually I'm from the east coast, but I moved out here for a job and to be close to the mountains. Denver has been winning me over lately. I doubt I'd move down there, but I've had a great time.

I saw Snake Rattle Rattle Snake at the Hi Dive. They were pretty enjoyable. Certainly better than the options in Boulder: madolines or bad electronica.

this thread is just turning into me plugging gigs, but ... bizarrely we're playing from 8-10 tonight at the Southwest Rink at Skyline Park. You know, the free ice skating rink on the 16th Street Mall. It is going to be weird!

this sunday! 1st show w/ my new band, forces at work. playing w/ a ridiculous bill - new bums (donovan quinn, ben chasny), and the mighty howling hex (poster to the contrary we go on first)! we pretty much started the band so that we could open for the hex, so we might break up after this.

15"-40" in boulder. christ! what a weird-looking storm.

The dry weather last week was the calm before the storm.

A lot of water is expected to fall from the sky over the weekend, especially over the Central USA.

Some areas could see feet of snow. Some could see flooding.

I assume/hope your sister's house survived, Eric (and your sister and her fam, obvs.) The fire came within half a mile of my mom's house (she lives in Louisville) before the wind died down and the snow started.

In the meantime, I'm still playing in random bands out here! This is our next show. I've never been to the venue, but I'm a little worried about them throwing around the terms "circus arts" and "cabaret" ...

Hah, no, I was just feeling a little homesick today, even though I've been away for more than 30 years. I really am curious as to what happened with Eric's sister's house. I guess more than 1000 homes were lost in that fire. Prices in the Boulder exurbs are out of control.

When I was in school at Boulder in the mid- to late 80s, Longmont was a cow town, where a few students chose to or had to live. It's been completely transformed.

Same for downtown Denver, although it's still got the feel of a small city.

Oops, never did follow through there, but my sisters house made it fine. They were basically a block away from the evac zone, and houses as nearby as a mile did go up, but their house was safe, and they donated a bunch of clothes and toys to families who lost everything

a crazy / awful event — still seems kind of unreal. it's been a fairly mellow year out here (knocks on wood) so far in regards to wildfires.

haven't heard of dead comets! but they do seem adjacent ... there are some decent musical things going on in denver and the surrounding area.
