Was watching SNL over the weekend and noticing, certainly not for the first time but for some reason it’s really smacking me around now, how flat out AWFUL this show is and continues to be. How the heck does Lorne get away with hacking out the same weak, tired junk year after year? I’m not blaming the cast so much as I’m blaming the writers for stuff like the “Bob Bummer” skit, where the joke’s telegraphed in the first half minute. The “all black guys = Kenan” thing’s dead, stop reanimating it. The cartoons and performances are the best thing about SNL at this point. These aren’t new complaints, I know, but I can’t help making them now.

And now, a dumb corollary:

SNL’s continued existence = Bush administration’s continued existence (equally contrary to sanity)

(p.s. Saturday’s episode DID have its moments, i.e. “Katrina Gone Wild”)

Debbie Downer is the best recent sketch. I don't remember anything else. I do like Tina Fey and find it generally very watchable. I think people forget how many BAD sketches there were even during the "golden age".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

i liked tina fey for the firt year or two but she's not funny anymore either.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

ipart of the problem being that by the time saturday comes around, john stewart used all the good topical news jokes

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

I like Fey's touch with the commercials: "Mom Jeans" "Lower-Back Tattoo Remover" etc.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

SNL is as funny as it was in the Golden Age. REMOVE YOUR ROSE-TINTED GLASSES.

Basically, they've got some really talented comedic actors right now (esp. Poehler, Rudolph, Parnell, and dude who plays Bush (though his Bush imitation is pretty shitty)), but the writing and choice of topics are for shit.

It was a lot longer than a year; Dick Ebersol exec-produced most (or all?) of the '80s. I've seldom tuned in since Mike Myers left.

Lost its subversive nature circa 1978.

The Times had a thing last week about all the great characters Fred Armisen has done, but last time I was paying attention he hadn't moved much beyond Ferecito and the senile Vegas drummer, the one who hit the rimshot long after Chris Kattan had finished his punchline, said "I can't stand it!" or "Ooh, my prostate!" and moved on to the next joke.

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

maya rudolph carries that fucking show!

dan, nbc has been airing "golden era" snls on saturday nights after the new one is over -- or at least, they were during the summer -- in their entirety, sometimes with three music numbers, and it is astonishing to see the difference in ingenuity and simple variety of acting styles/pastiches they had then. it's like people were born with better brains.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

unfortunately looks like maya is about to take a little break from the show.

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

The Times had a thing last week about all the great characters Fred Armisen has done, but last time I was paying attention he hadn't moved much beyond Ferecito and the senile Vegas drummer,

He's gone way past those. The Nuni character was pretty funny the FIRST or SECOND times it was on. His Tony Danza is quite cringe worthy, in a good sort of way. And Prince suffering from an allergy attack was pretty fucking funny.

I wish that they would pick up Darryl Hammond and throw him into the dumpster. Maybe now that they've picked up a new impressionist, they'll act on that. I think ten years is a little long to be doing the same lame Trump or Chris Matthews imitations.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

God Darryl Hammond blows. How many fucking excuses can they come up with to keep having Bill Clinton in sketches for no reason?

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

And every single one of his newscaster imitations is EXACTLY THE SAME.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

Even Aaron Brown?

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

A good impressionist becomes his character and "fools" the audience not by repeating the same phrases and catchphrases. When Hammond does Schwarzeneggar for instance, all I see is a gap in the teeth, a fake Austrian accent and repeated use of ending each sentence with "...and all these things" or "...and things like that".

The new guy, however, was able to bring something remotely new to Al Pacino, someone who is frequently imitated. The THERE'S A SHITZU STUCK IN A CHARTER OAK TREE line was funny while Hammond would have just said HOO-AH 800 times.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

I don't know much about his SNL roles, but Fred Armisen is pretty fucking hilarious in his SXSW video

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

Amy Poehler's performances are great.

Will Forte is underrated. His appearences back I think when he wasn't even a regular castmember as Tim Calhoun were amazing. It reads funny, but it was performed even better, really slow and stilted with long pauses between sentences:

http://members.aol.com/ummmliz/home/calhoun.html

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

YES. The Tim Calhoun stuff was the funniest stuff on SNL in AGES. I think it helped that it was quiet instead of LOUD AND OBNOXIOUS.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

Actually, Fred Armisen doing a Parrot is the funniest thing I have seen on TV in months.

We talked about it on the Neil Young SNL thread on ILM actually! It definitely was a sketch that had me in tears. The 4 new featured players regularly outshine the rest of the entire cast, mainly because it's been so long since the show has had any new blood.

I'm guessing there'll be a long cupcake line at Magnolia for... 2 weeks?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

i am foreseeing a huge magnolia-line smackdown between the sex and the city bus tour attendees and the 'lazy sunday' fans. frosting everywhere! oh noes!

but they'll all make up on the train back to long island, so everybody wins! YAAAAY

maura (maura), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

Hasn't there been a long cupcake line at Magnolia for like the past two years? The NYC cupcake fad is so ridiculous-dumb, but it totally fascinates me how there has to be some kind of thing that all New Yorkers compete to claim they know where to find. Like ooo, everyone's all excited about some cupcakes? Yeah well actually I know a hole in a fence in Inwood where the cupcakes are much better, proving that I'm way more of an out-and-about in-touch New Yorker than you could ever be, hahaha.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

Let's make up the next thing! Post-cupcakes! Some kind of beverage, maybe?

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

(magnolia is way overrated, double true)

maura (maura), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

nabisco clearly the next big thing is HOT CHOCOLATE

maura (maura), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

(or rather it is the next big thing in my little corner of nyc)

maura (maura), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

There really are these fancy molten-chocolate places popping up everywhere, which seem to fulfill all the criteria -- like special-event new-experience fun-food that people will word-of-mouth to everyone -- but I haven't seen it gain much momentum yet! Someone was going on to me over a year ago about how great this stuff was, but I never even bothered finding the place. But then again, I'm lazy like that. Chocolate it is!

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

I really rather like Magnolia thank you. Can we make Pink Teacup the next hip in-spot?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

I've lived here 13 years and never been to Magnolia, so once the Cupcake Media Barrage began appearing my visit was put off another decade. If it's on the S&TC bus tour tho, I'll just move to Inwood and pump Nabisco for the info!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

elmo, patron saint of nausea (allocryptic), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

a friend of mine used to work at magnolia as a decorator and would get told off for the frosting being slightly too pink or a bit darker blue than usual. between the owners and the regular clientele, it was a total type-a bitch nightmare. sugar sweet sunshine, on rivington, was founded by rogue ex-magnolia staffers and defintely has better cupcakes.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

The NYC cupcake fad is so ridiculous-dumb, but it totally fascinates me how there has to be some kind of thing that all New Yorkers compete to claim they know where to find.

but yeah, "nabisco otm."

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

I was forced to eat a Magnolia cupcake at a baby shower, once. I vomited almost instantly after swallowing the last bite, the sugar shock was so bad on my system from that disgusting so-called "frosting." Ugh. Literally like one of those cheeks-puffed-out, hand-over-mouth, run-to-sink moments. SO GROSS.

NEVER AGAIN do I eat a cupcake made by anyone besides myself. Not even my mom's. And I blame Magnolia!

A fondue redux fad >>>>>>>>> stupid fucking cupcake fad.

cupcakes, baarf.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

I don't really get why there would be a cupcake craze. They're not really a user-friendly food -- they're messy and not something that's practical to eat on the go.

Lars and Jagger (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

The cupcake craze has invaded Chicago, too.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 20:25 (nineteen years ago)

they're pretty tiny (most of magnolia's bulk comes from the frosting), so people with restricted diets can feel like they're getting a treat without having a whole piece of cake (god forbid), and they're actually fairly portable. a few bites and you're done.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah they're like frosting bombs, not cupcakes.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

cupcakes have been all over the bay area for a few years. i don't get it. they're fine I guess.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

The logic here is the same logic that gave Krispy Kreme its ridiculous boom and bust: more or less entire cities saying to one another "Omigod, have you tried these things? They're so yummy!" And then everyone makes some happy lazy-Sunday event of treating themselves to tiny sweet-bombs, or else brings them to work as special "event" treats, or else takes them to bars for friends' birthday gatherings or whatever, and they're a mini-craze and Krispy Kreme stock goes up to $400 a share or whatever, and then suddenly everyone's like "yuck, wait, I couldn't eat another one of those things," and then it's over, and Krispy investors lose their Krispy shirts.

Basically it's like if you took a slumber party of 10-year-olds and threw donuts at them -- they'd go crazy happy yay-donuts for a while, and then they'd roll over sick and not want to look at a donut again for a week. Just expand that notion to whole cities and/or states and play it out in slow, collective motion.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

Krispy Kremes: yet another thing that causes near instantaneous vomit. Thanks for teh memories, nabisco, thanks.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

Why cupcakes = cupcakes are basically real-cake reduced to a dainty candy-like mostly-frosting treat, like eating a slice of cake in the form of popping a breath mint.

Yeah but see Ally super-sweetness if their whole agenda! The thing has to be so ridiculous super-sweet or super-yummy that they're like forbidden fairy-world treats. (I actually don't get this with Magnolia, though, cause their actual cupcake-cake is pretty good, good enough that I'd prefer it non-slathered in frosting.)

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

I think Sugar Sweet Sunshine was smack when I lived on Rivington.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

Well, a big part of the thing with cupcakes is that whole twee "I made cupcakes as a kid"/"we had cupcakes in school" thing, so a lot of the appeal is definitely nostalgic.

Rachel McAdams does not look like some better-known actor. Rachel McAdams does not look like anything at all. I find it terrifically scary and have probably posted about this before. She has a face, yes, and there seem to be features on it, but it doesn't look like anything except maybe an unfinished mannequin. No, a prototype of an unfinished mannequin. No, a rough drawing of the prototype for an unfinished mannequin. It creeps me out a little, and I actually hope she becomes a major paparazzi-stalked star so that one day I can see candid pictures of her on the street looking all tired and scuzzy and Spearsish so that maybe then I can say: aha! That is what she looks like! I have spotted some feature she possesses that is more specifically identifying than "I am pretty sure she has a nose!"

And it was only in this googling-session just now that I realized I've seen her in several different movies, including one I've seen twice, and I didn't even realize it because SHE HAS NO FACE! She's like some kind of weird doll where you dress her up however you want and her face just melts into whatever shape it's supposed to be to fit the outfit.

When she first came out and had that blonde hair, I used to get her confused with Jaime Pressley, because they both have huge horse mouths and coke noses, but now they are like two different people to me.

One has brown hair, for example.

Like for instance you couldn't date her, because she'd show up every time and you'd be like "Excuse me, miss, could you quit bothering me? I'm waiting for my girlfriend Rachel."

I don't mean to be contrarian about this, but compared to most young actresses, I find Rachel McAdams to be pretty recognizable! It's a lot to do with the horsiness that Ally mentions, but also there's something that's sorta strange about her eyes.

According to the wiki, Mr Pibb was introduced in 1972. It is now "Pibb Xtra" for extra extremeness.

Apparently, Coke's relationship with Dr Pepper is only a licensing/distro deal. (like A&W)

The secret origin of Mr. Pibb:

Bolder taste to match your lifestyle
Mr. Pibb was launched in Texas and quickly expanded through much of the U.S. Mr. Pibb appeals to 12-to-15 year olds who are just gaining independence from home and looking for things to call their own. Mr. Pibb enables them to have an uninhibited, fun and unconventional attitude because it has the sweet, refreshing bold taste they need to express their independence.

In 2001, Pibb Xtra was introduced in Houston and Dallas with an intense flavor kick -- a bolder version of the original taste. Its bold taste and graphics appeal to young adults who are looking to get the most out of life and the most out of their soft drink. Based on its tremendous success in Texas, Pibb Xtra will replace Mr Pibb across the U.S. in 2002.

mr pibb is too awesome to not use serial commas in its promotional materials

http://www.npgmusicclub.com/members/forum/viewtopic.php?

(As a lot of u know, Fred is a huge fan and a Music Club member and
he shared this with the club 2day.-j7)

Hello! This is Fred from SNL. I tried to post earlier today and it
didn't come up, so apologies if this is a repeat. I just wanted to
share my experience from this week. I was so psyched that Prince was
the musical guest as was the whole cast. Watching him do his sound
check and rehearsal up close was unbelieveable. That band is
amazing. I approached him and told him how great I think he is and
he was super kind. He made me feel like it was okay that I do an
impression of him. I couldn't believe I was standing there talking
to him. I have wanted to meet him since forever (who am I talking
to? YOU know what I mean!). He is charismatic in person. It's pretty
powerful. I don't think it's just because I am such a huge fan.
After he left, his guitars (the blue Strat and that Telecaster) were
left on stage on stands. I just stood there about a foot away
staring at them for ages. THOSE are the ones he plays!!! Right
there! Everyone in his group (musicians, singers, crew, assistants)
were really sweet. Very positive and happy to be at the show. I even
got to meet the NPGMC site people! I always wondered what they
looked like. They were super cool too and I bombarded them with
questions about the site. In case anyone is wondering about him
appearing on the "Prince Show" sketch...
We did ask him early on, and the answer was that he wanted to focus
on the musical performance. His people were nice about it and they
had no problem with us doing it. We wrote a version that didn't have
him in it and a version where he made an appearance, just in case.
When I saw him rehearsing with his band, I realized "oh yeah, he's a
musician and wants to give the best possible performance!" Why would
he want to focus on something else? I understood and was happy just
to be in the same room with him.
Fred

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

I found myself reminiscing about something yesterday ... does anyone else remember the cocktail-party musical they did during the invasion of Afghanistan? The way I remember it, it was really one of the best things I've ever seen on television, not for humor but for ... something else. Bunch of people milling around on a house-party set, chattering, trading rumors about how far the invasion has gotten, in goofy musical voices: "Say, I heard they've got Mazar-E-Sharif!" -- "I heard it was Herat!" All culminating in this big song-and-dance road-movie number, like "We're going to KANDAHAR!" It was really something, not laugh-out-loud "funny" but just -- perfectly capturing the ridiculous of the moment, everyone memorizing the names of new cities they know nothing about, enraptured by the progress along the map, and all with this weird blankness ... like we're singing and dancing, but does anyone know exactly why?

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

The amazing part was the kind of universalness of it -- it wasn't making fun of anything. It seemed to realize that just about everyone felt that way, and just about everyone was doing that -- and that it was kind of just weird and beyond us. It didn't seem to have much agenda beyond this kind of hold-your-breath "OMGWTF this is weird" thing.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

I vaguely remember that, because I remember seeing it and then for a while afterwards singing "KAN-DA-HAR!" to myself whenever I heard the city's name on NPR or whatever.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Sunday, 1 October 2006 04:34 (nineteen years ago)

oh, i missed that bit. i was outside, trying to decide if i want to adopt a stray cat who's been hanging around my house.

so, now that tina fey has left, is that why the writing seemed so crappy?

frizzy hair = tom bolan

you mean marc bolin.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Sunday, 1 October 2006 04:41 (nineteen years ago)

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Sunday, 1 October 2006 05:09 (nineteen years ago)

no one appreciates tommy bolin/marc bolan jokes anymore. because they're not funny, i guess.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Sunday, 1 October 2006 05:12 (nineteen years ago)

they fired chris parnell :-( :-( :-(

and horatio sanz :-(

and finesse mitchel :-|

Can't say I'm kicking myself for missing Dane Cook. I'm sure there were better jokes in the PS2 game I was playing while this was on.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Sunday, 1 October 2006 11:11 (nineteen years ago)

they should have fired themselves long ago! give yourself what, two season three max and just JET, good god man!! i will harsh no one for grabbing SNL's golden ring but if you can't springboard yourself into something else after two years, disappearing completely for awhile would be the better choice career PR-wise (not to mention the effects on one's soul); i.e. "the interminable lifespans of things that aren't really working out, pt. 39992871"

tim meadows, man. they need to put a poster of him backstage at SNL as a warning.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Sunday, 1 October 2006 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

Darrell Hammond has been on the show 11 years, breaking Meadows' record I believe.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 1 October 2006 12:21 (nineteen years ago)

yeah parnell was on for a long time but only really came into his own in the last few years.

the alternative is pulling a tracy morgan!

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 1 October 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

parnell was gone for at least one year though, he got fired and then hired back. anyway I never liked him

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 1 October 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

They should have fired Horatio Sanz about 5 years ago.

GILLY'S BAGG'EAR VANCE OF COUPARI (Ex Leon), Sunday, 1 October 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

Hammond needs to go...the same old impressions are really stale.

Parnell was way underrated I think. Funnier then Seth Meyers.

Horatio Sanz was occasionally very funny.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 1 October 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

I thought Parnell was behind their two most-watched skits of the last year (Narnia and Portman)? I haven't seen an episode in so long I only know them by Youtube hits.

milo z (mlp), Sunday, 1 October 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

those had to be written by Samberg and his internet pals...Chris was in them probably because he's alwasy had that "look at me I'm a nerdy white guy rapping" schtick.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 1 October 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

I kind of liked the Geico commercial skit, especially because I turned to it immediately after watching a Geico commercial on another channel.

Sundar (sundar), Sunday, 1 October 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

They had a joke about Chingo Bling! That was the only part I watched. PBS here has good counter-programming: reruns of The Office and Monty Python. I can't remember the last time I watched a full SNL.

Orgy of Pragmatism (Charles McCain), Monday, 2 October 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

I just suddenly remembered how funny the Christopher Walken Trival Psychic sketch was. "You ...will drink a cup of coffee. It will be very hot."

Ed Glosser: Trivial Psychic

Ed Glosser.....Christopher Walken
Female Employee.....Julia Sweeney
Male Employee #1.....Phil Hartman
New Employee.....Rob Schneider
Male Employee #2.....Adam Sandler
Delivery Boy.....Chris Rock

[ Female Employee drops her styrofoam cup while pouring some spring water. Ed Glosser picks it up for her, then accidentally grabs her hand, falling into a trance ]

Female Employee: Are you alright?

Ed Glosser: [ pause ] You have a daughter..

Female Employee: Yes?

Ed Glosser: She's at home with the housekeeper..

Female Employee: Yes?

Ed Glosser: The housekeeper just waxed the kitchen floor..

Female Employee: Yes?

Ed Glosser: Your daughter's running.. on the wet kitchen floor..

Female Employee: [ panicking ] And?

Ed Glosser: She's leaving footprints..

Female Employee: Yeah?

Ed Glosser: The housekeeper's annoyed.. she has to do that part of the floor over again..

Female Employee: Really?

Ed Glosser: It's not too late! You can call her.. and save her!

Female Employee: Um.. I have some work to do, but I'll call her later. Okay? Say, how did you get these powers, anyway?

Ed Glosser: [ looks into the camera ] I.. don't.. know..

Announcer: Ed Glosser: Trivial Psychic. During a brief power outage, Ed Glosser's tanning booth experiences a slight malfunction. Forfeiting a darker base, he instead gains the mildly impressive ability to foretell insignificant events of the immediate future. This is his story..

Male Employee #1: Ed, I want you to meet Bob. He just joined us over in Accounting.

New Employee: Nice to meet you! [ shakes Ed's hand ]

Ed Glosser: [ falls into his trance ] Tomorrow.. on the way to work.. you're gonna buy a cup of coffee..

New Employee: [ anxious ] Yeah?

Ed Glosser: Then you're gonna hail a cab..

New Employee: Uh huh! Does the cab crash?!

Ed Glosser: No.. you're gonna leave the coffee in the cab!

New Employee: Okay.. I guess I'll just have to get another cup when I get here.

Ed Glosser: Look! you don't get it! You're wasting coffee!

Male Employee #1: Ed, Ed, Ed.. what's the big deal? It's just a cup of coffee! Look, we've got a whole pot of it over there.

Ed Glosser: accidentally touches the male employee's arm and falls back into his trance ] At lunch.. you're gonna treat yourself to a vanilla ice cream.. you're gonna eat it too fast.. you're gonna get an ice cream headache.. it's gonna hurt.. real bad.. right.. [ touches the middle of his forehead ] ..here.. for eight, nine seconds..

Male Employee #1: Ed, I don't want you to take this the wrong way. But you're giving everybody the creeps.

Ed Glosser: I didn't ask for these powers! They just came to me!

Male Employee #1: Well, I see a large stack of papers on your desk.. and I see you finishing them all by five o'clock! [ laughs and turns to leave ]

New Employee: Hey, uh.. nice meeting you. [ starts to shake Ed's hand again, but retreats and leaves ]

Male Employee #2: [ enters ] Hey! Psychic Man! What do you see happening in the World Series - Toronto or Atlanta?

Ed Glosser: [ upset ] I can't believe you're asking me to use my powers in that way! [ turns to leave, but Male Employee #2 grabs Ed's arm and sends into another trance ] You're eating a bag of pistachios.. you will find that one is very difficult to open..

Male Employee #2: Yeah?

Ed Glosser: You're not going to be able to open it with your fingers.. you're gonna have to use your teeth.. it's gonna taste very bad..

Male Employee #2: Just the one nut?

Ed Glosser: Yes!

Male Employee #2: Alright.. well, thanks for that tip. I'm going to go call my bookie now. [ leaves ]

[ Ed sits in the office, annoyed ]

Delivery Boy: [ enters carrying a bag ] Excuse me, did you order a tuna fish sandwich?

Ed Glosser: Yeah.. [ pulls out some money and places it in the Delivery Boy's hand, falling into another trance ] You have a car..

Delivery Boy: Yeah?

Ed Glosser: [ pause ] Could you give me a lift home? Nobody around here likes me.

Delivery Boy: Sure. Why not?

Ed Glosser: [ still in trance ] There's going to be traffic.

[ the two exit the office, to fade ]

The dumb thing about it is that it's supposed to be silly how a rapper is going to give financial advice, but he has a BA in business administration. NOT SO CLEVER NOW, SETH MEYERS.

I also laughed at the many many water jugs, but I am easy to please.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Sunday, 22 October 2006 02:59 (nineteen years ago)

sure it was a cover? I was in a vietnamese restaurant years ago and heard some of the same songs, but well produced pop versions, they may just be standards.

I dunno, I'm getting kind of sick of her. She's in like every single sketch, and her characters are all really mannered.

xhuxk e. xheese (jaymc), Sunday, 11 January 2009 16:42 (sixteen years ago)

last night was so bad, though. that sketch was the only decent one. i really liked the idea of the broadway sketch because i have had this conversation with like 300 people in the past year, but it really did not come through with anything funny (aside from the chandelier).

tehresa, Sunday, 11 January 2009 16:58 (sixteen years ago)

that episode was like they added a bunch of new cast members who aren't really integrated yet and don't have any characters or ideas so they basically just wrote a bunch of sketches to let everyone do impressions of famous people. like seriously every sketch was just lots and lots of impressions. it's just going to be weak for a while until everyone figures out what they're doing

i <3 wiig too though

Thats too bad, he was really growing on me this season. I loved his Little Lord sketches. But something doesn't scan between "effective immediately" and "parted amicably".

Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:21 (thirteen years ago)

It seems like cast members only "leave" mid-season if they seriously fuck up on the air or otherwise piss off Lorne Michaels (I believe Norm MacDonald did both). Theoretically, Brittain could've gotten offered something he couldn't turn down, but realistically, what're the odds that Paul Brittain is getting insane unturndownable offers?

Too bad. It seemed like he was finally starting to get more screen time, as well as a couple leads in sketches. I wonder if this means Jay will get some more screen time. Taran and Vanessa seem to be heading straight to full-time cast members by next year.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 01:18 (thirteen years ago)

It seems like cast members only "leave" mid-season if they seriously fuck up on the air or otherwise piss off Lorne Michaels (I believe Norm MacDonald did both).

it's extremely common knowledge that he did neither!

lana del rey: everythang's workin' (some dude), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 01:32 (thirteen years ago)

Norm? Yeah, he didn't piss off Lorne, rather one of the NBC execs that was friends with OJ Simpson and got sick of the jabs on Weekend Update. But that may have been in reference to the F-bomb Norm dropped on air that a lot of people still seem to think he got fired for.

Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 01:50 (thirteen years ago)

have we ever done a weekend updater poll? and did someone who wasn't norm mcdonald win? if so, FUCK YOU.

I stand corrected on Lorne/Norm, but yeah, I was also thinking of when he said "fuck" on the air, which probably didn't help.

six months pass...

that picture is amazing

i was just coming here to post that very early 80s SNL is sooo terrible. why have i never heard about this era as a dark age for the show? it's srsly painful to watch. during update, people in the audience laughed at almost none of the jokes! i'm surprised that the show didn't die around that time.

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Thursday, 26 September 2013 10:10 (twelve years ago)

though obv i's not like i've heard about it as a golden age, either. just never heard people talking about how bad it was. apparently it was nearly cancelled in 81?

gilbert gottfried talking in a normal voice, tho

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Thursday, 26 September 2013 10:44 (twelve years ago)

Jean doumain iirc. There was at least one time in the 80s (and a second time either in the 80s or 90s) where almost all of the cast was scrapped except maybe one or two people

The time when Janeane Garofalo was on was also notoriously unfunny; there's a Wizard of Oz sketch w SJP floating around, maybe on YouTube, that might actually be the most awkwardly unfunny thing they have ever aired

Tetsu: The Inoue Man (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 26 September 2013 11:12 (twelve years ago)

Though otoh the season where almost everyone got fired has one of the show's best episodes where Francis Ford Coppola "directs" it and keeps trying to call "CUT!!" in the middle of sketches and there's a lot of self reference abt how bad their own show is and then everyone dies in a fire at the end, not jk

Tetsu: The Inoue Man (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 26 September 2013 11:14 (twelve years ago)

Also Oprah hosted an episode in the 80's!!

Tetsu: The Inoue Man (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 26 September 2013 11:15 (twelve years ago)

The final sketch of the 11th season: "... in the final sketch, Billy Martin is shown dumping gasoline around the studio and then setting it on fire. The entire cast is shown to be trapped in a room as a parody of TV show cliffhangers. Credits rolled with question marks on each name, signaling that the viewer didn't know which cast members would be returning the next season. Cast members were angered by an ending added to the sketch, in which Michaels has the opportunity to rescue the cast from the fire, but chooses to save only Lovitz."

Lovitz, Nora Dunn and Dennis Miller actually returned for the 12th season.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 26 September 2013 15:22 (twelve years ago)

it seems like a lot of the 1980 stuff was self-referential about how much they sucked. like, a majority of it! the very first sketch of the season does that. it gets pretty old.

nearly everyone was fired from the 1980 cast when charlie rocket let "fuck" slip, apparently. i didn't know that he killed himself until i was looking stuff up about this incident.

As I get older it gets clearer she was the best of the original cast. That sketch where she plays the little kid who keeps jumping off the bed into her wall is just so perfect.

is sarah squirm funny or not? i'm confused by her.

treeship., Tuesday, 15 November 2022 01:47 (three years ago)

she seems to enjoy her own humor immensely which signals to audiences that it must be incredibly amusing and they respond positively to that because they want very much to participate in the good time she's obviously having. that's probably a lot of what's confusing you.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Tuesday, 15 November 2022 01:55 (three years ago)

the body horror comedy she did before snl was pretty out there -- a little too off-putting for me, but i am wondering if anyone on ilx is a fan

treeship., Tuesday, 15 November 2022 02:12 (three years ago)

I was a fan pre snl and and was astonished that she made it into the cast. I don’t watch regularly but have enjoyed a lot of the snl stuff of hers that I’ve seen. Anything that makes the show weirder is good for the show imo, as is anyone outside the mode of “forgettable milquetoast standup” types that seem to dominate the cast these days
