one of the best house shows i've ever been to, ned. in fact, that's where i started becoming deaf.

ai lien (kold_krush), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Unfun on the deaf, but yay on the house shows. I theoretically will be at one on Saturday, maybe.

I did like how they ended their recording career with a goth concept album. More or less.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

we all have to go thru that phase, in my opinion.

Ned, concept album????

I'm everywhere, Ned. Wherever you can look - wherever there's a blog that hasn't been updated in months, I'm there. Wherever there's an mp3 of some sorry-assed metal band, I've been there. You can see me in the way guys yell that someone's been pwned in the comments section. I'm there in the way chicks turn their heads and take their pictures with the flash off and their computer monitor on, and when people are accepting and declining invitations based solely on hAWT pIX and connections to other hAWT pIX - I'll be there, too, Ned.

This myspace thing has always been way off my radar. I dont think I get the point of it - it doesnt look like an actual journal thing like blogger or LJ, so whats the dealio?

Also Ned WTF - how come in Donut's comments thing you're like, spamming him with crazyness =)

john clarkson, Friday, 11 November 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

I feel weird, as a person who only has a band account, about adding most of you guys, because I feel like it implies that you like my band. So if I haven't added you, that's why, I pretty much only solicited people who had said nice stuff about us so I didn't feel guilty.

Jdubz (ex machina), Friday, 11 November 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

ok, this is pissing me off. i uploaded a photo, but it's not showing up as my profile photo. there's something in the faq that says there should be a checkbox next to my photos to make any of them the "default" pic, but there is no checkbox!! i even opened up IE to see if it was a browser issue...

and why does it take so long to upload a crappy less-than-600K photo?

teeth marks on your tongue (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 11 November 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

LC, Sunday, 4 December 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

My ahit is GNAR? Teenagers these days - they speak another language.

People, do yourselves a favour and click on that band link in my last post - you will have to admit that it was worth it.

A strange myspace phenomenon - people in bands who become your friends and will regugarly use myspace to say hello - then you meet them at gigs and they don't talk to you at all! Shy people who require the distancing effects of a terminal in order to interact, perhaps.

moley, Sunday, 4 December 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

which is completely annoying... considering i usually feel like i've got maybe 4 or 5 friends max and a whole lot of acquaintences, i found it strange how many of them care about being in my top 8... til i realized they were trying to be in everybody's top 8.

bring on the next myspace please. or make friendster a lot better maybe.

I am myspace.com/mariad and also the secret wizard behind myspace.com/wvvy and Rufus's and Cyrus's myspace pages.

Rufus and Cyrus could use more friends (they're in my top 8). None of their peers are on myspace (nor are most of mine either).

The other day when I was dropping Rufus off at daycare, his "teacher" said she'd seen me on myspace. I felt oddly exposed. I was glad I had taken the personality questionnaire off my profile page where I answered "best physical feature" with "clitoris."

Oh yeah, teh interweb is public, even to the people who work with my kids.

Apart from anything else this usage would necessitate referring to 'my Myspace' which is difficult to say and sounds stupid.

Warlock Magazine (Warlock Magazine), Monday, 13 March 2006 14:46 (twenty years ago)

There was a truly egregious "expose" in my local paper about myspace (mvt1m3s.com) . I've been hearing about myspace a lot on the news as the new Marilyn Manson to blame for all kinds of errant teenage behavior. Our paper had this whole big spread about how shocking local teens' profiles were (pictures of people smoking, drinking and in their undies). The paper stooped so low as to print lots of local kids' profile pictures in the paper. I realise the Internet is public, but I'd be horrified to find my profile taken off the interweb and splashed across the paper.

Maria :D (Maria D.), Monday, 13 March 2006 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm, that's interesting and weird that a newspaper would interpret Myspace photos as public domain. I mean, posting a photo on a website doesn't mean you relinquish ownership of it. And all though, y'know, I know other websites and web-posters will take photos from wherever willy-nilly, that's nowhere near the same as an actual newspaper ripping those photos. Those teenagers whose photos ran with the story would be well within their rights to demand payment for the publication of their photos.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 13 March 2006 14:57 (twenty years ago)

I wrote a letter to the editor:

Fuddy-duddy much? I hear the Internet is scary. Voyeurism is a part of what makes websites like myspace and the Internet as a whole intriguing and potentially dangerous, but that is not the whole story. The articles about myspace left me feeling uncomfortable. The main reason even the interviewees gave for using myspace is to communicate with peers. Yet [author's name]'s article fell just short of giving the stats on what percentage of girls were in their undies versus clothed. Some creepy people are probably thanking the Times for showing them how to mouse their way to myspace hotties. It was the voyeurism of the article that irked me.

This is yet another example of older people immediately assuming the worst when they see young people gathering for fun. Myspace is so popular because it offers a rich environment in which to interact with others. Myspace is so popular because anyone who has written a song can create a music profile page where the world can hear their music. I love myspace for that very reason.

Rather than focus the public gaze, eyes agape, at the seedy underbelly of myspace, at the sex and drugs, the Times could have done a story about dozens of local musicians and artists who have a free place to showcase themselves there.

And come on. Teenagers drink and have sex – shocker! Didn’t you when you were a teenager? Attempts to drive those behaviors underground do simply that. One message the article seemed to have for kids was just to be more cunning about hiding from parents.

Rather than do the public service of warning people to practice safe Internet, the article seemed to mock young people. The Times made a feeble attempt to guard anonymity of the people whose photos or profiles were shown. [Author] might feel a bit violated if he were to find pictures of himself at a yoga retreat published in a paper. Location, location, location. Context, context, context.

The Internet may be a big bad world full of stalkers, but are we really forewarned and better served by printing pictures of local teens in lingerie?

Maria :D (Maria D.), Monday, 13 March 2006 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Forewarned? No. Better served? YOu BET!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 13 March 2006 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Have you been having fun with our new Film and Video sections?

An acquaintance of mine tells a story of being at some fancy restaurant in L.A. where a table full of well-dressed corporate dudes were eating modestly and some schmuck in the corner by himself was ordering, like, $1000 bottles of wine. 'Cool mom' hears about this myspace thing that the kids are all into along with hula hoops and chewing gum.

Ultimately I shouldn't be quite so flippant -- on the one hand, logical enough concerns are raised and she does the right thing to address them as far as I'm concerned; on the other hand...though she tries, bless her heart, she still comes across as someone who forgets what the heck adolescence is like. I've casually hated 'gee, is that what those young people are doing?' themes/stories since at least the eighties and this does nothing to help with the matter.

"The thing to be now is untraceable," he told me. "Wipe every reference to yourself off the internet. Make yourself ungoogleable. Why tell criminals, corporations or the government all that stuff about yourself? Why do the spies' job for them?"

Guy sounds like a classic example of a reformed smoker a la Bloomberg.

He's not actually saying that, Ned (well not in that quote), he's saying that livejournal is more content-oriented, whereas Myspace is more along the lines of Friendster, very much "this is my, you know, space". Which is pretty undeniable.

From the article:

I can't even leave a message on the page telling people it's not mine; I'd have to join MySpace to tell MySpace users I'm not on MySpace.

That's not "can't", that's "won't".

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno, though, isn't livejournal ultimately also saying "this is my, you know, diary space"? The two aren't meant to be exactly equivalent but I find a perceived separation between them somewhat disengenuous -- kinda like how I tend to perceive my own myspace page and my flickr account as part and parcel.

I love how you were "supposed" to blog about "Everyone Poops" in 2002, despite the fact that the book came out in 1993. It's exactly that herd mentality I was writing about in the MySpace article. Why are we all suddenly on MySpace? Because we're all suddenly on MySpace. And why are we all suddenly deleting our MySpace pages and moving onto something else? It would be great to think it was because we all hate Murdoch and what he stands for. But it isn't. It's mostly just... because we are. Same reason we drifted in. A butterfly flapped its wings somewhere, and it became a storm, then the storm passed, and we got on with life.

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

And why are we all suddenly deleting our MySpace pages and moving onto something else?

Oh man-with-his-finger-on-the-pulse-of-popular-culture, where are we moving onto now?

you know what else is passe? Wired.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

Oh man-with-his-finger-on-the-pulse-of-popular-culture, where are we moving onto now?

From "The Baddest Boy", a Paper magazine interview with artist Dash Snow (22): "Maybe I'm a little paranoid, but I think more people should be," Snow says. He doesn't own a cellphone or a computer. Ted Kaczynski, aka the Unabomber, is one of his heroes; so are Harry Smith, Aleister Crowley, David Hammons, Genesis P. Orridge, Neil Young and Keith Richards. "I am antitechnology," he says. "I read two books on the Unabomber and Thoreau's Walden, and I'd like to live a semi-survivalist style. I want to correspond only through mail and live in the wilderness. I'll never have a computer and no watch, no phone. They are means of surveillance -- not that I have anything to hide."

Now, you joined MySpace to get laid (don't lie), but I can assure you that Dash Snow gets laid more.

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

honestly, Wired promoted so much self-absorbed, irresponsible, and sloppy thinking during the dotcom boom (for example my persona fave: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/5.07/longboom.html), I'm surprised they've survived at all.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

They operate in quite different ways. Your default myspace page, (I may be generalising here) the one you bookmark, is either your page, with comments from others and a list of your friends etc, or your home page, with your friend's bulletins and links to your calendar, your blogs etc. Both pages are a sort of interaction between yuo and your friends.

With LiveJournal, the main page isn't your user info, or even your blog, it's your friends page, which conglomerates all the stuff that your friends (who you set up in your user info) have posted. It's the one thing that LJ does really well, and I have no idea why MySpace doesn't do something similar - these are the bands I love, tell me when they're playing next, and these are my friends, tell me what they're saying. I suppose the Bulletins panel on MySpace's Home Page is a similar version, but it's too summarized to be of any real use.

This also has the side effect of keeping people's friendslist in check, so instead of the polymorphism that runs riot over Friendster/Myspace, where friending someone means anything from BFF to "I saw your band/read this funny thing you said/like your look". But on LJ it means something more specific, it means "I want to see whatever you post on my friends page". This tends to keep the numbers down :)

I mean, with your near-800 friends on MySpace, Ned, how much use do you get out of that Bulletins section?

I probably sound more hostile than I sound, I really like both of them. Though I'd be lying if I said I didn't wish MySpace had a work and design ethic like LJ - the instant message has been a few week from working for how many months now?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

By the way, I'm not endorsing Unabomber Snow or his survivalist-Luddite tendencies. He wears skull t-shirts, and skulls are, like, so over. But this delete-unhook-disconnect thing is where fashion is leading at present. And it's pointing that way because we're in the middle of a second dot com boom, fuelled by the success of things like YouTube. It's a snobbish reaction to that.

And I should point out that Wired News, which I write for, has no connection to Wired magazine, although it did begin as Wired's website, Hotwired. Wired News is owned by Lycos, Wired magazine by Conde Nast. But I loved Wired in the 90s, and I loved that Long Boom article.

Yea, I'm AMAZED how crude some of the features on myspace are compared to digg, flickr, delicious, lj, etc. which have had many of them for YEARS. Myspace is still operating in a Netscape 4 world!

JW (ex machina), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

even though it was 99.9% wrong? (let me guess, you love it BECAUSE it's 99.9% wrong)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

The only thing good/valuable about myspace are the users. 90% of my local social contacts are on there and reachable. Even if I have phone numbers for many of them, often I neglect to get email addresses. So it is very convenient to use a mutual friend as a way of locating an electronic means of contacting people. It reminds me of how many businesses continue to use fax machines. The fax (a HORRIBLE communication mechanism, compared to email) is still used because every business has one and can be used with pretty much any kind of visual data. No one would care about buying fax hardware if it weren't for the network in place.

JW (ex machina), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

let me guess, you love it BECAUSE it's 99.9% wrong

Exactly. Wrong is the new right. It's always right to be wrong when you're erring on the side of optimism. As Captain Sensible sang, "If you don't have a dream, how're you gonna make your dream come true?" And, as Gramsci added, "optimism of the will, pessimism of the intellect".

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure Dubya and the Neocons would agree with you.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

They might even agree with the Gramsci bit too. It's a funny old guilt-and-innocence-by-association world, isn't it?

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

given that all the neocons are rabid anti-communists I imagine they're more inclined to wipe their asses with the Prison Diaries then to read them.

the main problem with yr contrarianism is that its so predictable (which is the sole virtue of machines, not so much for human beings)

it seems even gramsci has left myspace, though it is unclear if this is due to anti-murdoch feelings, or a more general anti-herd feeling

I mean, with your near-800 friends on MySpace, Ned, how much use do you get out of that Bulletins section?

Like I've told other folks recently, you get out of Myspace what you put into it. Chris S. of Strange Attractors Audio House, for instance, was telling me at Terrastock how myspace has not only helped in terms of social contacts but also for both his label (and his many associated bands) as well as his mail order service. A rising tide that lifts all boats in his case, and I could mention more personal impacts on various friends of mine as well. I don't see LJ as a naturally superior version of exchange of information, merely a duplication with different tools and formatting. As for having all those friends, I won't apologize for knowing a lot of people and liking a lot of bands. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

its really pretty indispensable as a band-networking tool - its made reaching people and coordinating various things a lot easier for me for sure.

paginated navigation = tabbed browsing? broken yep.

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

I'm confused, Ned. You're saying that MySpace, particularly now that it has a Music section, is great for networking and specifically bands? Because I'd agree with that, and it's part of what I'm saying, that it does different things in different ways.

I don't know why you seem to think I'm getting at you for having a lot of MySpace friends. I would expect nothing less :) I'm just trying to say that the Bulletins is the most LiveJournally bit of the site, and that due to the much wider net of friends, it still not very good at being LJ. It is on the other hand great at what it does :)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

Yes indeed, that would be great.

Ours is:

http://www.myspace.com/vietgrove

I didn't bother w/one for myself. What is the point? I can splurge out here if I want to. I thought about adding a bridget riley b&w op-art background to our page to render the text entirely unreadable as seems to be the fashion among many myspace users, also in a similar vein, add 100s of animated gifs to slow down/crash the browser of anyone who looks at it. Maybe later.

We got a couple of gigs out of having it, which we probably wouldn't have got otherwise. Some of the music on other artists pages is very good, and some of it I would never have heard. So, it's good for that. Otherwise it's pretty terrible I must admit. The design is a mess, its success is a mystery to me.

I looked at the band's page ratty/moley/dominaktor linked to above:

Subject: Help me find PORSHA EMERALD....
Body: My dear friends I need all of your help in my quest for Porsha Emerald.

The story behind this is basically that my housemates boyfriend Joe while doing a paper round in 2005 (I have no idea why a 22 year old such as Joe would still be doing a paper round) found a small yet almost complete A5 book of professionally taken, soft lensed photos on the girl in question. Finding them rather humorous he picked up the album and held on to it until May 2006. Now I don't know why but they ended up in our house and used for a semi-practical joke on another one of our housemates.

On Saturday night post Eurovision a few of us went to a local pub for a few late drinks and took the album with us to return to Joe who was down visiting his girlfriend. So I gave them back to him and unsupprisingly he didn't want them. After we all had a good laugh we passed a few onto some of the pubs patrons sitting on the table besides us. One lady there decided it would be humerous to write a short story as written by this girl about who she is and what she does. I will post this story on my page at a later date. This story then spurred a drunken me into deciding that I would singlehandedly take it upon myself to find this girl and return this rather special set of photos to her, as of course (a) i like a good challenge and (b) I have nothing better to do with my time (c) don't like to back down to anything.

So far all I have to go on is the fact that the photos where taken in 1998 at the Olan Mills branch of professional photographers and that they where found in Portchester just outside Portsmouth England in 2005. After adding a small selection of my acquaintances I did a MySpace search for everyone who lived within 20 miles of the Portchester Llyods bank and requested for their friendship. I have had many letters wishing support and luck but no substantial leads. If you would like to help in my quest, read the full story, or see some photos of the lovely Porsha then please point your browser towards her MySpace at http://www.myspace.com/porshaemerald There is also a pretty kicking Chi-Lites song on there too :)

Pop star-turned-doll maker MARIE OSMOND has launched a personal crusade to clean up the Internet after learning her two teenage daughters have been posting sexually explicit correspondence on their MySpace.com websites.

The PAPER ROSES singer felt compelled to give a statement
to US tabloid National Enquirer after the publication uncovered outrageous content on her daughters JESSICA and RACHAEL's blogs.

On her site, 18-year-old Jessica, who was adopted by Osmond as an infant, claims she is a bi-sexual who craves sex "as many times as possible," while her 16-year-old sister describes herself as a "slut" and a "whore" in correspondence and opened up about her dreams of having sex with DAVID BOWIE.

In her statement, shocked Marie, a devout Mormon, says, "I am saddened by some of the choices that two of our children have made.

"The insidious potential for harm from adolescent Internet sites like MySpace.com only exacerbates these kinds of problems.

"If my being a celebrity figure is good for anything, let it be as a voice of warning to other parents that no matter how protective we think we may have been with our children in the past, we need to become more knowledgeable and even more vigilant now in order to protect them."

.

get firefox (fandango), Thursday, 10 August 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

I can't say it has...might it have to do with myspace's recent flash upgrade?

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Thursday, 10 August 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

I have firefox, and will try that tonight.

wrapped up like a DOUche in the middle of the NUT (donut), Thursday, 10 August 2006 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

People's absurd "OMG I WILL MAKE MY PROFILE YELLOW AND GREEN AND PURPLE AND PINK AND GIVE IT A HUGE STATIC BACKGROUND AND EMBED MUSIC AND USE PICTURES INSTEAD OF WORDS" profile edits crash IE on my mac and often make things unreadable in Firefox, so it might just be stupidity.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Thursday, 10 August 2006 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

If it looked like I was being snarky btw I only suggested that as I know someone who was having issues with IE + myspace because of active X, as firefox doesn't use it (and you should get a slightly different code sent to yr browser because of that) it could be problem solved.

Also, with Firefox you can use the flashblock plugin, which solves A LOT of wonky loading issues on myspace. And shit music from playing without warning.

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 10 August 2006 22:17 (nineteen years ago)

well, it's crashing just loading the main page... these aren't obscure three-hundred-YouTubes-playing-at-once-while-loading-a-3MB-background-because-another-dumbass-wanted-to-make-an-intense-profile page issues causing this.

wrapped up like a DOUche in the middle of the NUT (donut), Thursday, 10 August 2006 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

This multiple Internet personality thing really scrolls my nurd. I've got a myspace login because my brother and some of my friends are on it, I've got an LJ login because a bunch of my other friends are on it, and I use Blogger because I like blogging rather than being in a community. I haven't had anything on my myspce profile for about 6 months now. However, my friends are trying to get me to build one again as they've deicided that since we're 29 now we might as well enjoy it while we can and before it becomes even more embarassing then it already is. So what's the verdict? How old is just too old for MS and should I create a new profile? I do have a lot of free time at work . . . .

ENBB (expatrica), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 18:45 (nineteen years ago)

I'm 31 and the people responsible for me having Myspace (because they refuse to use regular damn email now) are all in their 30s -- I don't think there's a too old, just a too old for pink backgrounds and shoutboxes.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

However, my friends are trying to get me to build one again as they've deicided that since we're 29 now we might as well enjoy it while we can and before it becomes even more embarassing then it already is

See, I think this mindset is kinda crazy. Even beyond all the friends old and new I keep in touch with using it, it's proven to be an amazing resource on a musical front -- obviously not everyone's priority per se but it is one of mine at least -- and any number of musicians I've spoken with or read in interviews say similarly, helping in sales and in just encouragement to try and do more. There's no reason why something better can't come along on that front -- probably will quicker than we all realize -- but your friends are almost sounding like 'Oh yeah that whole Internet thing, it's just a fad, isn't it?'

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

hmm, I'm 33 and have been using myspace/friendster for what 4-5 years? I think the break might be for good now. i'm not even going back in to delete my profile.

If you and your friends enjoy it, I wouldn't worry about whether you're too old. Plenty of "older" people get a lot out of it.

I just found it too be too stifiling and time-consuming. On the one hand it made me feel obligated to keep up with tons of old friends I didn't really have the time to and on the other end it nurtured lots of negativity b/c it's so easy to keep up with the lives of exes, people you don't like. DUDDERS!

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 18:52 (nineteen years ago)

I think the "too old for X" construction often originates with people still fascinated with being "old enough for X" and assuming there's an endpoint.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm, that succintly desribes my feeling towards a lot of ILx whirlwinds the past couple of days.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

I had one when it started but that i got a bit weirded out by the fact that 1) everyone was so young 2) it was so godawful horrible looking and i couldn't figure out how to make it look nice. But then i saw Ned R's and it's so organised and neat now I think it might have another go. Despite my enormous age.

Edward Trifle (Ned Trifle IV), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

But then i saw Ned R's and it's so organised and neat now I think it might have another go.

Hahah, there's a simple reason for that -- I didn't change any of the settings! The whole point with the site's design is the encouraging of doing 'anything you want with it,' with consequences we've all seen. But I've always been of the opinion that simple = best -- I was like that with my now very outdated homepage in the nineties, and so I felt like the easiest thing to do was to leave the basics of the page as is. No embedded media, no overdone colors and background, just something that could actually load up easily for any user.

She loves shiny and sparkly things, and is very quiet and polite. Her trademark is a little necklace that she wears: it holds the silver key that opens Hello Kitty's jewelry box.

Charmmy has a friend named Sugar, a white jungalian hamster who was given by Dear Daniel. She also has a pink younger sister, Honeycute, who has two bows on each ear.

I can only imagine this being read in the voice of an over-enthusiastic, helium-sucking 8-year-old. I have a headache and a cavity.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 8 February 2007 00:42 (nineteen years ago)

I tried to add Trayce, following her link upthread, but it said that her profile had been deleted :(

Yeah sorry, I deleted it not long after I mused upon doing so upthread away. I'd only joined it to talk/stalk one dude I know away from other fora. Then people started hassling me, and I was getting band spam. So I turned the bands friend me option off.

And then bands started harrasisng me on LJ (srsly!). So I thought "fuck it" and deleted my account.

Why myspace is crap: the other day a friend of mine was sent a message by some creep who had a plastic gimp mask on in his photo. He said he jerked off and autoasphyxiated himself while watching her profile.

So she deleted her account.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 8 February 2007 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

As YMOF pointed out some time ago, Myspace would be a lot better if they let you organize your friends into groups, so that you could target your bulletins properly. I'm not sure Jarvis Cocker wants a care bear stare from me as much as, for example, Ned might like one.

Ned Trifle, you can wipe out the entire details box - follow instructions and cut and paste from here. If you have anything in the Heroes section, put the code after it. If you don't have anything in that section, it will appear at the bottom of your interests as a blank.

Jaq, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 01:17 (eighteen years ago)

DG, Monday, 1 September 2008 13:50 (seventeen years ago)

is anyone still using myspace? about 99% of people I know have converted to facebook now. i used to run events and put them up on myspace and people would RSVP. last time i did one abosultely no one replied to say whether they were even going or not. the facebook event got 350 replies.

the next grozart, Monday, 1 September 2008 13:58 (seventeen years ago)

i still use blogger :)

Ste, Monday, 1 September 2008 14:02 (seventeen years ago)

I use both, bit of a hassle. How is facebook for bands? In terms of numbers, song sample capabilities, etc.

RabiesAngentleman, Monday, 1 September 2008 14:14 (seventeen years ago)

that's the only thing about fb is it's not so hot for bands although the new fan pages look like they're doing it.

one question - if i have a group and i set up an event through the group, how do i invite group members to that event, as it only lets me add people i know and they're not necessarily in that group.

the next grozart, Monday, 1 September 2008 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

i only use myspace for listening to music and checking tour date - it has no part in planning my social life (or anything else) beyond those two functions. facebook, on the other hand, is currently my diary, event planner, link to friends old and new, photo repository... all sorts.

grozart, you can't invite people to a group event if they're not in that group - fb logically assumes the event is excusively for member of the group.

why not just sent up the event independently of the group and then post the event on the group page? that way you can invite who you like and tell them to join the group at the same time.

Fuck you, MySpace.

I'm in Belgium, so it's all in French now. If I click the "International" link, I can choose French or Dutch.

Everyone writes in English, all my settings are English (browser & stuff), but MySpace insists it still wants to be in French or Dutch. Everyone is stupid and only knows their own language, is that it?

I *could* create an account, set that to English and log in every time (maybe it would still detect I'm in Belgium and force me to use French or Dutch, I don't know), but I'm not going to. I made a new 127.0.0.1 line in my hosts file. Goodbye, MySpace!

Tort defense lawyers are increasingly seeking access to plaintiffs’ private social media pages in hopes the contents will provide evidence of fakery.

Two state courts recently granted broad access to private portions of social media sites, and a federal court did the same in 2009, Reuters reports. In one of the cases, a defense lawyer allowed access to private posts had claimed that smiley faces and talk of a vacation show a tort plaintiff is happy and mobile.

In September, a New York judge granted lawyer James Gallagher access to the private materials in a personal injury suit filed over a fall from an office chair at work. Gallagher had argued that MySpace smiley faces posted by plaintiff Kathleen Romano are evidence of happiness, and talk of a Florida vacation by her daughter indicate Romano isn’t homebound.

“We figured something smells here," Gallagher told Reuters, "and we wanted to see what else was in there."

"Tom Anderson, keeps his page set to public, as he sort of has to: Anderson is was for years automatically the first friend of everyone who joins. His last status update, posted March 1, was “keep up with what’s hot on MySpace.” Apparently there’s not much to keep up with; that’s the only update he’s published since 2010*.

Incidentally, MySpace’s redesign last October helped paper over a somewhat awkward issue for Anderson: the fact that his profile continued to list him as five years younger than his actual age, as established by public records. Anderson’s age, real or fictional, isn’t listed on his new page, although you can still see it in the listing that comes up if you search for his name. That would his fictional age, 35. The real one, 40, is in Businessweek’s story."

The asterisk points out that this is an erroneous claim btw. (3/11 iirc).

shasta?

*Update: Originally, this post said Tom Anderson last updated his status on March 1, 2011, but Marty Blake pointed out that Anderson’s last post was actually March 1, 2010. The post itself only includes the month and day, but a little Googling showed that Blake was correct.

buzza, Friday, 24 June 2011 18:04 (fourteen years ago)

haha, poor Tom. He's actually 41 years old too.

Not surprising.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 24 June 2011 20:16 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I think in the end myspace will be sold for $25-50M, that was pretty unrealistic that a website would just "go away" on a given day.

sold to Justin Timberlake for $35 mil

a man is only a guy (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 22:55 (fourteen years ago)

News Corp paid $580m (£361m) for MySpace in 2005, but users and advertisers left the site for rival social sites like Facebook and Twitter.

The sale terms were not disclosed, but there were unconfirmed reports that price paid was as low as $35m.

Has there ever been a once-hot site that fell out of favor and then became hot again after some length of time? I can't think of ONE. That's just not how the internet works.

RIP MySpace. they deleted all our old profiles (blogs, comments, surveys, "who I'd like to meet" — basically everything but photos) a few weeks ago. I'm a little sad about this, actually.
