This is the thread about the ILX outage Nov 15th

Draw all the bile to this one thread eh.

I still don't have the full story about what happened, but i WAS genuinely concerned that there might be something more complex going on. As it turned out it wa pretty straightforward - an exploit we've already suffered. i will try to fix the various issues asap

Enough with the "Alan is great" stuff - it does nothing for my already fragile ego :-)

I don't know if this or the Mod Req Board is the right place to bring this up, but something's hinkey with the TITTWIS thread (maybe lotsa other threads too?)
Regardless, thanks for yr efforts Alan. Much appreciated.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

Not really much of a storm. Bet it took a chunk of someone's time though.

are we all chipping in for the buffy boxset yet?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

Jon I've removed Barry and Thermo and given you back FAQ and Revoke privs, but I don't know who else was a mod there so it's going to have to be you doing it manually - sorry.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

thank you!

Wasn't Jon the one putting up all the atari penis images?

"all the atari penis images"

Bah! My internet access wasn't working all morning, and I finally log on to find there was Atari penis images and board shutdowns.

Stupid Telewest.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

This thread still does rather strange things both to my Internet Explorer (stops loading, times new roman font, no scrolling) and my Firefox (I only see a picture and the scrollbar, doesn't do anything, no messages in sight) - is this something to do with one of the problems?

Or are guys locked out of that particular thread about menstruation?

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

xxx-post

you wouldn't believe it, david hasslehoff posted on one of TITTWIS threads. caused a ruckus all morning.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

The menstruation thread locks me out too, albeit with a foxy Claire Danes pic. But that's what I get for looking, I guess.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

How do you mean "it locks me out?" You can't post?

Nathalie is in Da Base II Dark (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

No, it either stops loading (Internet Explorer) or that picture is on the foreground so you don't see any text (Firefox).

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Ah ok. Well, that's the only solution: turning off the pics in the settings. :-(

Nathalie is in Da Base II Dark (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

turning off images in ILX prefs doesn't fix it; it has to be in browser prefs.

as someone mentioned elsewhere, in firefox you can block images from a certain URL. i don't think crappy IE5 for teh Mac will let me do that here at work, though ;)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

actually: turning images off in IE prefs doesn't work either. as soon as it tries to load that image, it fucks up with a grey screen. i suppose i could try chucking the cache etc, but really: life's too short.

honestly. jesus fucking wept. etc.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

possibly a moderator could put "clicking on this might crash your browser" in the title?

actually i should try that 'moderation request' thing i guess

tom west (thomp), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

So exactly who was doing the css (I think?) "tagging" on those threads? Also, why is anything other than basic forum html--fonts, links and images-- allowed on thread posts? Is ILX a subsidiary of Sony?

Does anyone remember that episode of the Twilight Zone? You know, the one where the prepubescent boy had, like, superpowers, and everyone had to dance around him really carefully and cater to the whims of this petulant little boy, because otherwise, he'd freak out and destroy the universe?

Wasnt that a Simpsons episode?

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

So is there any info on who actually did this? Everyone's blaming Jon, but I'd like to hear Alan confirm/dispute this.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

It was originally a Twilight Zone episode, that the Simpsons did a riff on.

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

As far as I can tell, this is what happened: Kim abused Noodles ILX coding account to fuck about with admin statuses, which resulted in Jon losing his admin rights on the Noise Board. Jon understandably went apeshit and then went CSS crazy when his complaints were not taken seriously. Alan shut down the board because he thought something odd was going on.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

So basically, what happened, was, some drunk Canadians decided to give JW a taste of his own medicine with regard to f*cking about with ILX on a technical level and mucking it up for other people. (I believe the technical term is "pwnage".) The admins, understandably (after having to clean up his little messes and his tantrums for so long) were a bit slow to put things back the way they were, and JW threw such a freaking temper tantrum that ILX had to be shut down for several hours.

Glad we've got that sorted, then!

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

Can someone just build in an Exalt/Smite function like the Ilx0r Temporary board has?

robster (robster), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 09:29 (twenty years ago)

i think all we need are lots of buffy boxsets, and we'll all be happy.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

Jon W:

A dick in the past, and also a dick recently. Likely a big fucking veiny Atari dick in the very near future. I'm kinda with people who think there's been too big a deal made out of this. The guy doesn't much like or respect these boards the way the rest of us do, and he never did.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

i think you need to declare an interest really, k-rock.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:09 (twenty years ago)

ken's right. i only have the first two buffy boxsets. :-( need more buffy. NOW.

Nathalie is in Da Base II Dark (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:11 (twenty years ago)

Kate, Kenan, Jon and all the others should just fucking drop it frankly. If yesterday proved anything its that the 98% of ILX is using the boards perfectly well and resents a tiny minority fighting out stupid, petty, irrelevant little feuds that are ruining it in such a big way.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

I think Noodles should have his admin priveleges revoked as well. The reason Graham had the code taken away from him was because he wasn't trusted by a sizeable proportion of users not to abuse it. Same goes here, I reckon.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:30 (twenty years ago)

OK, serious question - if someone decides to target you for repeated "excessive and ugly" (to quote a mod) harrassment, what are you supposed to do?

Ignoring it doesn't work, asking for moderation only serves to make it worse.

And quite frankly, if you're going to remove Noodles' priviledges, you should give JW an ASBO while you're at it, for endless abuse of moderator priviledges.

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

Don't answer that question, it was rhetorical. Just frustrated.

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

i agree with matt dc. kate, no one has had as many fights with as many people on this board as you have.

howell huser (chaki), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

And you, Chaki, speaking as someone that has stalked and harrassed a couple of other users so badly that they've left the board. I really value your opinion in these matters.

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

JW has never been a mod on ILE and as such had no privileges to abuse wrt this board.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

so....[really struggles to think about this].. let me get this straight....Some guy (who's an administrator on another board) breaks ILE by being a complete knob-hand and CSSing penis pictures all over threads... because some other administrator dudes (who were drunk?) deleted his admin rights? Two questions:

Why do we have so many, obviously mental, administrators on ilx?

and

Are these guys, like, twelve years old?

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

I think Noodles should have his admin priveleges revoked as well. The reason Graham had the code taken away from him was because he wasn't trusted by a sizeable proportion of users not to abuse it. Same goes here, I reckon.

mdc otm. that said, i'm not really convinced that jw's reaction was appropriate, either.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

No, Jon's reaction was supremely dickish as well but the majority of Noise Board posters hadn't done anything wrong. In any case, having mods or site admins with very vocal personal vendettas against other posters is asking for trouble.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

Chaki & Toby OTM. Kate, you are very repetitive and the gloating is tiresome.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

You know what's repetitive and tiresome?

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

Yes Kate, we get the idea. What do you propose we do about it?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

Don't say 'ban him' because you know it's next-to-impossible.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm starting to think that the oft-derided killfiles would be a really good idea.

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

Ah yes, drastic measures in the hands of fools. Good plan.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

The post Kate linked to surely falls under the category "nuisance posts", and personally, I'd be a lot happier, and I think ILE would be a little bit more enjoyable if ALL nuisance posts were just deleted.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

If you're perpetually bothered by the same poster, rather than every single user on the board having to adjust their settings and turn images off or whatever, give users the ability to screen out persistent nuisances.

And yes, I include myself in that category. Imagine an ILX where JW didn't ever have to look at my posts (if, indeed, he could be persuaded to use such a thing) since my very existence clearly offends him so much.

It would have stopped our B*cky L*c*s problem in a heartbeat, as well. Ditto C*l*m.

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

fwiw i do think the abuse which has been doled out to Kate has been deeply unpleasant, past incidents alluded to I know too little about to comment on, I also get the impression that she's been desperately trying to avoid feuding with anyone recently. Also, this tack detracts from the basic fact that that shit that was pulled yesterday is not excusable under any circumstances, any dilution of the issue is pointless and diversionary.

Y'know, nearly all of the small boards trundle along quite nicely without anyone feeling the need to wave their electronic dicks, Ste, by inference OTFM, a bunch of people need to grow the fuck up.

x-post Kate, in all honesty I don't think that any of your responses are going to be given fair consideration, given the feud history, I'd leave it, if I were you.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

ah, long have i fantasised about the mythical 'block posts by x' function.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

What if we just ask Jon nicely to stop posting?

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

so everyone is pissing everyone else, and everyone is behaving like a 12 yr old, adn the only way to get any real information, ask questions, open discourse, is to do something i find unconcisaboule (sp)

someone get it under control fucking now...
ban kim, ban zac, ban john, nuke the entire thing (as tom suggests doing in poptismists--im glad im part of that insider circle), just do something so we are responsible again--though with the balkanazation of the miniboards and the ever presence of silly noize assholes, i can not imagine that this will ever happen again.

"Please do not respond to any b*c*y L*c*s threads, (b*c*y cannot see this message)"

Good times

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

I went back and read the old killfiles argument thread (and man, what an argumentative hellhole that was, and yeah, I include myself in that inditement) and realised that we are dealing with a different issue here.

The difference is, that many of our former trolls were only really *saying* (writing) things that were annoying or devisive or antagonising. JW's shctick is an attack on the very fabric of ILX - destroying threads or rendering them unreadable, locking up computers, other destructive stuff. That's what makes this qualitatively different.

I agree that dealing with the former requires self control (even the patience of a saint, which I certainly don't have). But dealing with the latter is a programming issue and should probably dealt with on that level.

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

how can it be dealt with though? anyone willing to spam the boards beyond just text can post anon and from dynamic/multiple IPs, and they do.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps it's a case of locks keeping honest people honest--put just enough of an obstacle in the way to prevent the 'casual offender'.

Give people the ability to ban JW on a thread by thread level (where you already have the ability to ban anon posters anyway) would strip out 90% of that nuisance factor.

He seems to have the attitude that anything which he is not expressly prohibited from doing is fair game to do. So put the prohibitions in.

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

i don't know about computers, but cdn't he easily use a proxy server to get round that?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

I mean, you can say that's my individual feud, or my individual prejudice, but honestly - has anyone else ever actually caused ILX to go offline for several hours, except Graham? (Who, IIRC, was banned for it?)

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

x-post. No. Include it in the "ban unregistered users".

Yeah, I know, he could just go and create a new user account, but it might just make it that extra bit more difficult and control the more immediate of his impulses.

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

Would it be more effective if someone phoned him and told him to stop?

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

In the middle of the night. With one of those voice-changer things.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

Haha!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

Give people the ability to ban JW on a thread by thread level (where you already have the ability to ban anon posters anyway) would strip out 90% of that nuisance factor.

There's enough poxy fulage as it is without this increasing it tenfold though. So ILX would become even more unuseable.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

It would take Jon about 30-seconds to get through a thread-by-thread ban.

THE ONLY WAY you or anyone else is going to sort this out is by taking proactive steps to diffuse the situation rather than banging on about it in such an incendiary manner.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

Actually calling him might not be such a terrible idea. Perhaps it would be better to ask him IRL. Unless he carries flash cards with atari willies around with him or can send them as texts or similar.

Also the two parties involved should have admin powers removed. IMHO it's been made pretty clear that they aren't able to handle t3h power.

As to banning on individual threads, well that's just silly now isn't it?

Matt OTM.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

(Jon doesn't have admin powers on anything other than the Noise Board and never has, btw)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

Ok, DC, YOU TELL ME what I can do to get JW to leave me the fuck alone diffuse the situation.

And don't say "ignore him" because I tried that, and it didn't work. He just kept at it until my threads became unusable. And funnily enough, the two times I've asked him to be banned from individual threads, the abuse stopped.

JW deserves to be treated like an adult the day he starts acting like an adult. Because he doesn't just take it out on me, he takes it out on all of ILX.

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

Are these spoiler tactics being used now, or is it just my imagination? I can't tell any more. I mean the World Cup thread and "I hate the English" threads, specifically.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

So why did we impliment the registered users only rule? ;-)

Personally I don't really care. I only feel bad for the moderators because they had to work at restoring ILX. I also realize this is a community and it shouldn't be attacked as it was. I do realize that the way he attacks Kate's threads must be infuriating for Kate and it must be difficult for her. But at the end of the day I just shrug my shoulders. :-)

Nathalie is in Da Base II Dark (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

All of ILX? A bit of an overreaction surely? I dunno, I find him pretty ignorable really. The only times I see him really bad are whenever you react and you always do. Adult comment a little pot/kettle moment I think.

What happened to your board? I am only asking, this is not meant as a "Go back to where you came from" type-comment.

Matt, I was aware of that. I didn't really think about the noize board which of course he's fully entitled to run riot on. It's kind of taken as read that it's the playground area.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

i think Jon vs Noodles is the more important and bigger problem at hand right now, as that's what prompted the mass thread spamming and resulting outage.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

Stevem is right I think. the fact that things were being changed around etc is a major deal.

(How was housewarming by the way?)

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

why not just make ILX text only, and any codes are stripped, images linked must be jpg or gif.

and that maximum length of posts are 1000 characters. repeated messages not allowed. maximum of so many posts per minute.

sorted.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

no more than one exclamation mark to be used per remark.

no typing 'xpost' unless it's really unclear as to who/what you're referring to.

no playing shitty mp3s on your shitty phone at the back there.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

For what it's worth, ever since I found out about this thread, I've been rather wary of posting any sort of personal information here. Even if you yourself aren't harassed or laughed at, I think knowing that people do it to someone else makes this place more ugly. And yes, I know the standard argument is, "it's just a message board, don't take it seriously and don't talk about personal things there". Well, I've done exactly that, but I feel it's a loss. I don't find this place as interesting as before, when intimate discussions weren't laughed at, which is why I haven't posted that much for the last couple of months.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

kv_nol if you are actually interested, then please email me off board, as rehashing the entire catalogue is not really something that should be done here.

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

b/c certain threads need to have answers more then 1k charachters--anything else wrt the stripping works for me

What do you suggest we do about that, Tuomas?

(I don't know why I'm even asking.)

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

(Note the veteran ILXor in good-standing who contributed to that anti-Tuomas thread.)

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, I didn't mean to imply that the thread I linked to alone (I know it has positive comments too) has made me alter my views about this place, it's just part of a general attitude change that ILX has gone through during the time I've been here.

(x-post)

Tom, I don't suggest doing anything. Changes that big can't be forced, they'll happen if they're bound to happen. I was just expressing my sadness for what has happened.

Crikey. That's just freaking bizarre, Tuomas. :-(

I think it's kinda bemusing, actually. And I'm thankful for the nice thoughts put in that thread. But it has made me ask myself the question, "I have lots of friends, why do I need to talk about personal stuff on a message board?". I don't know the answer to that, all I know is that I liked doing it here in the past, but at the moment, not anymore.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

b/c certain threads need to have answers more then 1k charachters--anything else wrt the stripping works for me

how about any posts bigger than 1k will be replaced by a link, showing the first 1k characters, that opens a popup when clicked showing the entire post? this should be really easy to code.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

that makes sense

i dunno which ilx vet of good standing is being ref'd to. pash? blount? ally?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

I mean, you can say that's my individual feud, or my individual prejudice, but honestly - has anyone else ever actually caused ILX to go offline for several hours, except Graham? (Who, IIRC, was banned for it?)

But, based on what Alan has said above, it wasn't Jon that was the problem (thouh a cooling out period abviously did some good), so much as trying to figure out what happened in the first place.

Kate, I'm interested if it's interesting. Or shiny. Go on, give us a synopsis.

Ken that sounds a bit boring with the popups but I do think the image linking is a good idea. It's much wiser and I stand less risk of getting fired!

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

it's not that surprising is it, that tuomas found his thread, on the noise board?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

I'm not lurking on the Noise board, but I checked it out one day (ever since someone linked that "Noise board enemy" list to ILE, I've been sorta interested to hear what's been talked about people behind their backs), and saw a thread titled "Tuomas fan club thread". Kinda hard to miss.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

is this the part where somebody says "nu ilx" and i say "i don't understand the concept of nu ilx either" and then everybody just kinda coughs and notices something out the window and nobody actually tries to explain?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

i've been here 2 and almost a half years, ie about half teh life of ile. there were more 'has ile gone downhill?' threads back then, but on the other hand it's notable that some great posters have left -- perhaps that was there answer. ile has become more like the noise board, but except for yesterday, it doesn't really change the majority of ile action, and i don't think the noise element is any more typical of the board than, say, oh, to pluck a community out of the air, at random, TITTWIS.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

that would be a 'yes', then.

g-clit (g-kit), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

tuomas it was impressive that you went on that thread and engaged the haters rather than whine about it on the moderators request.

I feel like an asshole for posting on it, apart from everything else that happened yesterday. It was meant as a teasing poke in the ribs not a personal attack though I realize now that's a meaningless distinction. I found your remarks about eschewing television in favor of "light reading" to be pretentious and condescending but certainly no less so than 50% of my posts on ILM. So I'm a jerk AND a hypocrite. Like to think I'd laugh at a Lovebug's Pedantic Greatest Hits thread but who knows. Anyway I apologize. Seeing than I'm a peripheral ILXOR at best I've got no business driving you (or anyone else) away from the boards.

A parting observation: Jon W is an extreme manifestation of what seems to me a fairly common trait on ILX. Aggressively caustic humor and biting wit coupled w/a very thin skin. Me too.

peace

m coleman (lovebug starski), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

it wasn't Jon that was the problem

Does anyone really believe this is the case? Some otherwise rational people seem to think that vilifying the people who get most upset (and most abused) is somehow more constructive than dealing with the root cause - if the problem wasn't there in the first place, everything would be bunnies and candyfloss.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Lovebug, it's alright, I didn't find you posting my comment offensive, just kinda mystifying. I didn't mean to sound condescending with the "light reading" comment, I was just trying to explain what's my alternative to TV when I don't want too use brains too much. I didn't mean to offend TV watchers, I was just trying to give examples of what you can do if you don't want to watch the telly.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

You're assuming people don't use their brains when watching telly. People process information. I still can't get past that. Of course there's light entertainment - such as reality shows and the like - but you can still use your brains/analyze/... The biggest problem is that people aren't taught how to watch telly. There should be a course in high school on how to watch telly. (Something I had in high school.)

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

some of us nu-ilx0rz have feelings too.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

'nu ilx' = ILX when it suddenly became more than just refugees from USENET music group, Sinister and Momus - say from around Summer 2002. Not that it's actually important.

There seem to be less parody threads lately than there were a couple of months ago, though I suppose the volume could increase at any moment.

There really is nothing that can be done about any of this btw. More mods might get recruited and it might be made clearer who does what and who can do what and when, but none of that will stop spam, trolling, fighting, parody threads and other 'noise'.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Anthony:

- Can't remember.

- Find out by reading it. Jon W is chief mod there.

- September was the month in which people arriving at university would get internet access for the first time and go on USENET: the people already on USENET used to bitch about this because the newcomers didn't know local etiquette. 90% of their specific objections were anti-newbie snobbery and the problem with ILX is slightly different, but Dan still has a point.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

The Eternal September thing was coined by a good friend of mine and a past ILXor.

Jdubz (ex machina), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

(many x-posts)

i've been on ILX for, what, a year and a bit now; ILE for about half (maybe less) of that. like every community, the boards are evolving and changing all the time. that's one of the great things about them.

you can't start policing ILX or making demands of individual posters. it isn't feasible, let alone desirable. sure, it'd be nice if people who were caught up in individual feuds had enough respect for the rest of us not to spread them to large parts of ILE, but ... that's wishful thinking. short of self-defeating draconian action ("ban him!" "no, ban him!" "ban her too!" "ban all of us!"), all we can do is accept that sometimes people are going to be a little flakey and do annoying things. i don't see any more CSS horror today; to all intents and purposes ILE (and ILX) is functioning normally. move along, people, there's nothing to see here that wasn't there on monday.

there are always going to be individual battles and feuds. these, in fairness, are matters for the individuals involved. it's not up to the mods or coders to nanny everybody along. if you really don't like something here, stop posting! nobody's forcing you to.

and, as the exchange between tuomas and lovebug above proves, people are more than capable of overcoming their differences and moving towards some kind of mutual understanding.

anyway. that's my take on it. i can't force anyone to listen :)

I still do not understand the concept at hand that an easily accessible, connected-to-ILX, often-linked-to-from-here board is a group of people "gossiping behind backs." Tuomas, please don't take the Tuomas fan club thread so seriously as you have been, first of all everyone who posted something "mean" there has said same to your face (or as to your face as it gets online) and secondly really it's just a joke, reposting particularly ridiculous posts. I don't really agree with the people posting less funny/more personal-story posts but eh, everyone learns their lesson on that eventually I guess. But seriously, no one meant that in any kind of vicious spirit and I apologize if your feelings got hurt by me reposting your salacious posts on the underwear thread.

Anyhow, this is all a bunch of horseshit.
A) Matt DC totally OTM throughout thread, especially wrt the Graham thing versus this.
B) How flipping hard is it to code in NO CSS? Hell, no images! I mean God and 3 people here alone know what is contained in this top secret code but quite a lot of other places seem to have figured out the secret of not allowing HTML and CSS in posts, what's the big deal? End of problem.
C) Kate and Jon, get a goddamn room.

xpost anthony the noize board isn't a fucking hive mind, there is no consensus "what the noize board thinks of us" opinion. The best you got is a couple people reposting particularly typical posts of well-known posters and making fun of their writing style and/or obsessive subject matters. ie no different from ILE, magic!

Baaderonixx ménage ses forces dans l'attente du Grand Soir (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

some steps to prevent people rendering a thread unreadable.
- compulsory sizing of img tags, anything bigger than 800x600 will have height and width attributes added (or replaced with link), as there's not really ever any need to have images that big in-line?

- no posts longer than [insert value] characters or with [so many] carriage returns, or, if they're so long, replace with link. (same reason)

- strip out style attributes from all tags, as you can add that to everything even bold and italic tags if i remember correctly (no more css)

this should do it.

- compulsory sizing of img tags, anything bigger than 800x600 will have height and width attributes added (or replaced with link), as there's not really ever any need to have images that big in-line?

You have to be careful with this....

for anthony, the top ten threads currently on the noize board:
# funny thread: fall twee edition (101 new answers)
# HAPPY BERTHDAY BDD (24 new answers)
# THE COME SEE MY BAND PLAY THREAD (12 new answers)
# FRIDAY BROS............................................................ME + YOU = DRUNK (10 new answers)
# LET'S AGREE THAT WE'VE HAD ENOUGH (118 new answers)
# nurse with wound is eating a hole in my brain. (23 new answers)
# I hate myspace (2 new answers)
# AWESOME MC5 VIDEO HERE (13 new answers)
# NOVERMBRO 14TH COMMEMORATIVE ATARI PENIS PLATES (2 new answers)
# Baltimore (4 new answers)

Lots of shit talkin'. I wish people here would stop confusing Jon's occasional CSS freak out parades with the entirety of the noize board who basically do nothing besides talk about beer, weed, and things that go with that like video games and, like, steely dan.

But yeah, I mean it seems like the whole problem wrt yesterday would be solved by not letting people post codes.

xpost jon, I actually noticed that you hadn't posted much, I'm sorry, it's just frustration really. I wish you'd stop doing things like this cos the aftermath is so crap and overblown.

Ken, I still don't see why we need to limit characters. No images, fine, but why limit entries? Consecutive could work but then how would a person bump their thread over time?

Ken, I still don't see why we need to limit characters. No images, fine, but why limit entries? Consecutive could work but then how would a person bump their thread over time?

it's to stop people text-flooding kenan. there has been times before, when someone just posts what may as well have been the text from the whole of the bible (with irrelevant text, or just the same word repeated 500000 times like OVALTINE or soemthing), that renders a thread unreadable because the scroll bar gets fucked.

No, I still don't agree but that's because I don't think that the exception should decide for the majority.

Put very badly but I think it makes sense...

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

do the majority of people frequently post messages that are pages and pages long?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

No, but I don't see why they should have any limits placed on what they want to say. It's a message board, not a text message.

For what it's worth: my name's not Kenan.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Ken, maybe you ought to buy a new computer if that "crashes" your browser!

Jdubz (ex machina), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

oh oops. sorry.

but that's why there's the popup idea. if you DO need to post a huge fuck-off message, you can still do it!!! it's like if you want to post a huge image, you still can!

it just doesn't cock everything else up.

Maybe I need more coffee.

What is wrong with the scrollbars?!!?

Jdubz (ex machina), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

well the scroll bar functions as it should, but because 90% of the page is now suddenly the same line repeated (OMG BAN ME) or something

it just makes it a bitch to scroll down (you have to either grab the button in the middle which is by now tiny or click the down arrow and wait half a minute while it scrolls through 200 pages of OMG BAN ME)

and for what benefit?

it's just one less way that someone can deliberately disrupt a thread i guess.

hi all. Jon is slow for not figuring this out on his own (even though my name is all over his admin log) but it's time to confess that the noise coup wasn't aided by Zac. it was me. thing is, i wz super jealous of Zac's tremendous boner for Jon, so i had to take out the competition. plus it was too funny not to do because, hello, it was the noise board - the land where banning for petty reasons is the done thing. also there were pints and other substances involved. plus he's going to be all "i don't even know who you are!" haha. anyway, such flagrant abuse of situation has never happened before, and never shall again. i have been sternly chastened and locked out of the offendingly security lax computer. so rest easy, ilx. you are safe from such a malignant threat as myself. sorry if it genuinely upset anyone.

p.s. i refuse to apologise for Jon being a hypocritical crybaby sore loser cock sack afterwards.

oh and if you don't believe this is the truth, you can ask Webster's mom.(who was also in Porky's) she always said, "if you can't beat 'em, pwn 'em".

Jon is full of shit on this thread.

He's making semi-sincere apologies and acting interested in helping with coding bugs/errors, just like he always does when he throws a shitfit.

The truth is, the noise board was not disrupted at all by the Canadian actions. Nobody who posts there even noticed. Even Jon didn't notice for two days. OTOH, the CSS'ing instantly disrupted ILE and ILM about 100000000 times worse. Everybody noticed, obv.

Jon had his admin powers back on Monday morning. The only thing he couldn't do was revoke mods. While graciously waiting "24 hours" for the lizards to respond (which was more like 10 hours, actually), he decided he needed those revoke powers so badly that he had to bomb about 20 threads with images to get them back, rather than waiting until the next day to get them because all the lizards were asleep anyway.

Everyone IS batshit insane for taking this so seriously.

here's a rash, extreme proposal (my own private patriot act): if 'something must be done' howsabout this - 1) ile/x gets new mods who won't provoke stuff for shits and giggles and then graham out and shut down the entire board when it backfires, 2) kate/jon don't post on ile for however long and agree to stick to their own personal boards and the subboards which kick ile's ass now anyways (big kal-l counterproposal: ile is terminated, broken into superior anyhow subboards; restore the multiverse).

Everything about the aftermath of the out(r)age has been predictably overblown. You can be as upset as you choose to be about this, and it is as big a deal as you make it. Remember, if you let Jon's shenanigans actually upset you, the terrorists have pwned. See every Kate/Jon fight ever for examples of the opposite of what to do.

Anthony, do you acknowledge any distinction at all between "casual homophobia," "hates fags," and U R ALL TEH GHEYZ0R memeplay?

Not to say that the word "cocksucker" doesn't have a history or reify certain attitudes (which I'd argue have more to do with power relations in the hoosegow than homophobia), but context does have to count for something.

At present, the whole database fules out for several minutes when a user is banned, thread is locked, privileges are changed -- right? What's to stop Jon from locking/unlocking a noize thread every few seconds with a script, for the purpose of making the whole site unusable for everyone? Good idea, yeah? I look forward to the next tantrum.

Nine (nine), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

NEW PROPOSAL: a person starting a thread can ban ONE ilxor from posting on said thread (with the obvious caveat that the thread can't be about said banned ilxor) - HERE'S THE TWIST: a person starting a thread has to ban ONE ilxor from posting on that thread AND everyone can see who you banned AND each subsequent poster can unban that poster and then ban someone else cuz 'ownership' of threads is a rightwing inherently undemocratic auteurist prop AND i think this could have funny results maybe. ALSO you must assign yr thread a color and a number and when the threads are added together we arrive at a rainbow and it = infinity! also we can embed some fucking tull in the threads maybe already. we should find a way to leave pieces of candy on the board for others to find also i propose.

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay upthread: Barry, my "point" was that I really have a hard time believing every single person involved in this drama didn't know that Jon would FLIP THE FUCK OUT after he figured out what was going on. I mean, that's what he does, love it or hate it, he can get as freaked out as Kate about people invading his "things." So just as it's completely disingenuous that Jon is claiming he now wants to help code or whatever the hell you claimed he said (I can't be bothered to search the thread(s) and see if Jon actually said that though he has before so I have no reason to disbelieve), it's completely disingenuous to sit there all like, "Oh we didn't know blah blah blah." Grow the fuck up, a blind freaking chimpanzee coulda seen this all coming from 8 miles away.

IN SHORT: Y'ALL DID THE EXACT SAME IMMATURE BULLSHIT THING ON VARYING LEVELS AND Y'ALL SHOULD GET SOME GODDAMN TIMEOUT. LIKE, PERHAPS, A WEEK OR TWO TIMEOUT. Jon I love ya but that means you too buddy, I mean wtf??? Atari Penis Porn is never in vogue.

FWIW I thought the Atari Penis Riot picture was very, very funny. I never actually saw any of the CSS or logout things, I'm guessing because I either didn't click on the threads where they were posted or because browsing with images off prevented the chaos from occurring. A lot of the frothing indignation on this thread from both sides doesn't make any sense to me.

I kind of like the idea of Jon as a blank automaton emotionlessly posting CSS to random threads. It makes me think of Hayley Joel Osment in "AI". (Actually a lot of Jon's posts make me think of Hayley Joel Osment, which may be why I find him virtually impossible to take seriously.)

And Ally, your argument makes no sense ... essentially, I should feel free to throw tantrums online and IRL, because after a while, people will become accustomed to my shitty behaviour and learn to love and accept it because that's just the way I am.

You'd be hard pressed to find two people who are making less of a big deal of this than me and Thermo. Some funny stuff happened, end of story. However, some of blount's ideas are very intruiging.

I can't stress enough how much I like that "destroy ILE" concept. The various community-subset boards would still exist for group hugs and the like, and it'd be less likely that they'd bother with all the "OMG look what person X said on the main forum" jive. Plus it means more people would check out the subject specific forums if they actually had something to say about Something other than meta.

Some funny stuff happened, end of story.

You mean like banning amon from the noise board?

Jdubz (ex machina), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

Okay so I noticed exactly none of this stuff except for the fact that I got poxyfuled a lot for a few hours. But if I'd gotten pikapooed or CockTaried at work I'd probably care more, so as always I'm gonna assume most posters' main horse in this race is just hoping that behind-the-scenes pwnage and on-stage personal beefs get in the way of actual thread-having as little as possible.

(That said, Jon, I'm kinda curious: are you actually offended by someone kinda pranking the functioning of "your" board? Cause, hmm. I like checking the noise board; I'm not sure why anyone's too upset that there's one pocket here that ever-so-slightly more into jackaround aesthetics and URALLGAY jokes and NSFW picture-funnies than ILX is; it's not like e.g. ILM has been its old-school Civil-"Adult"-Discussions-with-Ned/Josh/Tom dreamland self in a long long time. But c'mon now -- you've extended that free-play approach to the board's functioning plenty of times, going all the way back to picture-bursts and background-image HTML and plenty of other things that make it harder for some people to use the boards. And while that's different from behind-the-scenes mods-and-privs stuff, I always got the sense that you were cool with unserious prankage and pwnage all round. So now that someone's pranked you in about the same way, and you've pranked ILX-as-a-whole back, I mean ... that's cool with you, right? You're not offended? Cause I always figured you were okay with going a little free-for-all with that sort of thing.)

I thought what Barry and Thermo did was pretty funny - they made it very clear they'd nicked his powers TWO DAYS EARLIER and NO ONE NOTICED. This shit only happened once they pointed it out, and they did say it was temporary and wouldnt happen again.

I saw it as making a point. A zing, if you will. One Jon couldn't take. Boo hoo!

Wait, damn y'all fuckers, don't agree with me, I didn't say anything! I was actually just asking Jon, because I didn't know. Also I assumed he was CSSing everything with the CockTari -- I didn't realize the kitten was getting postered over that, because, like I said, none of that was getting through my browser anyway. All I know is the whole thing seemed to be taking the board out of service for a while (and people elsewhere seemed to be wondering why skinny-Pikachu was taking a dump all over ILM).

Anyway. Whatever. But yeah, I think all most of us ask is that whatever's going on back there, people try to be decent about not fucking with the way lots of other people are using the boards, which includes both "attempts at serious discussion" and "at work" and all that other stuff. The image-hider isn't foolproof, and threads do get clogged, and traffic jams do happen, which sucks for everyone else -- and Jon, I mean, you know you were pulling kind of an act of terrorism there, scrambling the board up for "civilian" users because the mods weren't on top of fixing something! Which is pretty no-harm-done, but I'd hate for that to become the norm for everyone (whether it's "civilians" on the noise board or here).

detoxyDancer (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

Telling someone to suck cock as an insult is mostly just rude to yourself, assuming you like having your cock sucked. But I think what Anthony's getting at is that telling a guy to suck cock, or accusing a guy of being a cocksucker -- which would be, duh, a homosexual act -- often has a pretty homophobic thread running through it. (This is why people don't call women "cocksuckers," and why, when they call them something similar, the implication is calling them whores, not fags.) Unfortunately that usage of cocksucker is so everywhere and common that I'm not sure it makes much sense to single any one instance of it out for investigation.

Can you get with the program? The topic changed away from ILX like 164 posts ago, mostly. We are now talking about cocksuckers, quim nibblers and titty lookers. I know that ruins your "witty" post but seriously, sign o' teh times dude, come on.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

I called upon a co-ed group of unfair bouncers to "suck madd dick" in hopes that public mental images of them on their knees in an sexually embarassing postion would lessen the power they had over me in the physical world. This is the purpose of sexual insults, not really having much to to with sex but rather "sex."

I call upon all men of the world to stop advancing this notion of on-the-knees cocksucking as a "sexually embarrassing position!" We LIKE this kind of thing, remember? We should be claiming it's the most honorable, beautiful, and fulfilling thing anyone could dream of doing. Also that's it's slimming and makes you seem smarter.

You freaks have clearly not learned the middle path, which I shall explain via reference to the world of pop music. Witness Extreme's "More than Words." Consider that it is Slick Rick's "Treat Her Like a Prostitute" dressed up as Freddie Jackson's "You are My Lady." That's called finesse.

No, I was annoyed because the intent was to be mean and it stopped most of the normal fun activities of the noise board since we can't edit postsn and the douches were banning regulars.

Jon, your counterarguments suck.

We don't hold conspiratorial FAP's with the sole intent of being mean to other people on this board. Don't be an idiot.

No normal + fun activities of the board were stopped because NOBODY NOTICED ANYTHING UNUSUAL FOR TWO DAYS.

Noise board regulars + occasional posters NEVER get randomly banned and un-banned. I mean, it's not like there's an ILE thread that talks about it or anything.

You had your mod powers back on Monday morning (I gave them to you), and you could have passed them on to anybody you wanted. You started the kitten + Atari Penis Riot regardless. So much for the "mods ignored me for 24 hours" anti-excuse. Also, if the intent was to be mean then we would have kept control of the board and not given you your mod powers back.

In the future, I'm thinking about hitting up new film threads with a barrage of poker spam. Eventually people will get used to it and if they choose to start a film thread then they'll know what's coming and it'll be their fault for choosing to start the thread in the first place. In fact, this will undoubtedly improve the civility of the film threads.

Now go back to talking about whores and fags.

I mean he shouldn't want to play with the Eagles now, he should be happy to be benched, cos I know if I'm like Donovan's bud or like one of the linebackers TO tried to start fisticuffs with, I'd be like "Oh snap, I wasn't giving my best this game, I missed the block and NOW YOU HAVEN'T GOT KNEES." 1) What jon did was a bit daft but it helped me get away from my pc for a few hours, and his shitting pikachu made me laugh, so that's all fine with me.

2) kate is regularly annoying and I'd be happier if she was banned.

That's all thanks bye.

Couple years ago he came to a brass band show in New Orleans, I was standing next to him at the club for a little while. He's shorter than me!

I mean, it was a club and it was in NO, so he probably could have gotten away with a strong base stench before it would overpower anything.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 17 November 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

i really don't have a problem with a woman who doesn't bathe, nor one who doesn't weed whack her bodyhair. it'd be hypocritical of me to feel otherwise.

it is NOT sexier when women don't bathe, women can fume man, it's like the coach in rabbit, run sez - 'they covered with hair', plus ally go to an indie rock town or maybe just brooklyn or something - it's TOTALLY common

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 17 November 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

ILX confession: sometimes though i'll be super lazy and like not shave for like four days and then i'll have all that shit on my face and like 5% of the time when i shave it i briefly entertain the notion of leaving/trying to grow a van dyck and then i'll recall one of the ilx dudes who post pix of themselves on those 'whattya look like now? what about now? and now?' threads (god there's like fifteen of those dudes for every hot luna level pic)(much luv 2 them dudes btw, nate esp) and shudder and shave that shit right off.

Seriously! If that's what TO is gonna turn into under Parcells he should just go to the Cardinals or somewhere and spend the next ten years feeling misunderstood and, like, owning a beach or something.

I am pretty fastidious about showering 'cos I used to NEVER do it when I ws fourteen and got rightly teased but that deliberate cultivating dirty rock hair thing kinda works way too well to not do.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 17 November 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Not shaving does not make you an asshole, it just maybe makes you someone who doesn't like shaving and is maybe lucky enough to have a job where they don't care all that much and a wife who is indulgent of scruff. For example.

Also, COURTNEY LOVE.

gypsy i wore a green lantern t-shirt to work yesterday - they don't care if i shave.

so you just don't like being scruffy? I understand that, I just don't mind a little fuzz and I really really don't like shaving. But I also don't like beards, so shaving every 3-4 days is about the happiest I can be. Men have been ruled too long by the tyranny of the smooth cheek.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 17 November 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

i grew my beard back for a couple of weeks but then shaved it off again this morning. i think because my hair is getting longer: shaggy hair with a smooth face presents a nice contrast, whereas shaggy hair with a scraggly beard makes me look like a fucking slob.

Internet Message Board Trolls

People say "just ignore them". So you try.

And then they hassle you and hassle you, and harrass and borderline stalk you, escalating (sometimes to the point of destroying whole messageboards) until they've finally pissed you off. So you explode.

And then it's all "Bad Kate for responding!" rather than "Bad troll for being such a stalkerfreak in the first place."

Update:

When you ask them not to post gigantic 1000px pictures on your threads, they respond with "turn images off ::insult:: or get a bigger monitor". When you ask them not to sploodge your threads with several hundred identical posts in a row, they reply "what's wrong with your scrollbars ::insult::?"

What's wrong is WHY SHOULD HUNDREDS OF OTHER USERS ADJUST THEIR SETTINGS, CHANGE THEIR HARDWARE, THEIR COMPUTERS, BECAUSE YOU CANNOT CONTROL YOURSELF ENOUGH TO FOLLOW A FEW GUIDELINES OF SIMPLE NETIQUETTE?!?!?!?

The arrogance and the stupidity is just staggering.
