queue for the Empire State Building - go there for 4pm if you want to catch the sunset and then linger to watch stars come out (if it's clear)
i thought the MOMA was suitably great, Guggenheim definitely too

You probably know this already since you're thinking about it specifically, but MOMA's "normal" prices are quite expensive ($20, $12 for students). However, Friday evenings are free from 4-8pm. So plan on going then...

Don't bother with MoMA, or the Guggenheim. Do the following: African / Egyptian collection at the Brooklyn Museum (2nd most comprehensive on earth), the Met (especially European romantics, period rooms, Oceanic collection) and the Natural History Museum (espcially the classic dioramas, the Akeley collection). All of this can cost you $0.15 (at a donation of 5c each time). Don't be shy about this: The Met, for instance, receives 0.6% of its income from admissions. They don't give a fuck.
Hot Dogs: Papaya. It's too early to go to Coney Island - it'll be deserted, and not in a good way. Eat street pizza, but make sure you avoid Sbarros and other chains.
Don't bother with Century 21. It's crap, and you can find better clothes elsewhere.
Don't bother with the Empire State building or Ellis Island. The former takes too long, and you feel like you're in a sheep run. The latter is one of the worst immigration museums on earth. Instead, go to 125th St. past the Apollo, then the west side, past Grant's Tomb, the old churches, Columbia. Go see the schrapnel from the 1921 terrorist attack on Wall St. Go see a band at the Mercury Lounge. Drink a strong martini at Temple Bar. Walk over the Brooklyn Bridge to the Brooklyn Heights boardwalk, and imagine where the WTC was. Buy some hip hop at Beat Street on Fulton Mall. Go for a run in Prospect Park.

yeah f&b is definitely not chicago-style. they have like 'fancy' hot digs with guacamole and fresh diced tomatoes. stuff like that. i dont think you can get chicago hot dogs in new york except at shake shack which is closed for the winter... but crif dogs on st.marks is really good, and they have FRIED HOT DOGS. ask them for extra crispy.

On the plus side, I am DJing at Subtonic, on Friday the 24th. Not sure what time exactly, but if anybody wants to come along that'd be cool! I know very little about the venue or the night, I'm just happy to be playing somewhere.

I am in NYC from next Tuesday for about 8 days, so would be up for going for a drink in a non dance music place too sometime if anyone is around, though I'm not sure who exactly lives in New York and posts here! Also probably want to go record shopping someday, and my friend whom I'm staying with might not be the right person for the job so dance dudez might help me out, or let me know where the best shops are.

re sports again, while there are NBA (recommended, though the Knixcks suck right now) and NHL games at Madison Square Garden, the big events this time of year are in college basketball. the NCAA tournament isn't in NY, but you could see the semifinals of the NIT (the championship league, perhaps, to the NCAA's premiership?) at MSG on the 28th.

It is pretty pricey for MSG tix. If you want to see some basketball I think the Nets are your answer here. They're wayyy better than the Knicks this season, too. NEW JERSEY AHOY. (Their arena is actually only like 30 minutes away by bus.) Saturday sounds cool, the only provisional problem is that if I'm DJing Friday I might feel really shit on Saturday, I don't mean that I'll go crazy and do loads of drugs, just am pretty fucked healthwise these days so a night out can take it out of me.

Go see that weird dude Gadi's (Gatti? Gatty?) store, full of antique psycho-junk. It's just down from Katz's deli. Medical charts, antiquated science props, autopsy photos, farm machinery...... nuff rad shit!

That was my only time in New York actually. It was about a year ago today. I got ~~manna~~ sandiwches and pickles from Katz's deli, which the indy cinema a few doors down let chow on while I watched an advance screening of Steamboy. There was also root beer.
