I am going to NYC in March.......

At the end of March, my friend is in a play over there so I'm staying with him.

First of all, are there any good DJs playing then?

Second of all what else should I do?

I got a really cheap flight so am very excited about this. Hooray!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

awesome. how much for the flight? i was wondering if you could still get one for £200.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 15:59 (twenty years ago)

I've been to NY twice, both times were in March.

Pack a very warm coat.

i dunno what's going on show-wise yet, but in a little while i'll post some lists/sites where you can get info. aside from djs/etc., there's lots of stuff to do.

Not if this weather keeps up. It'll be 60 on Friday.

Je4nn3 ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Ah, but March?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 16:37 (twenty years ago)

March varies widely; it could be springlike or blizzardy.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 16:38 (twenty years ago)

I went just over christmas, apart from the ice wind it was lovely and warm. I really really want to go again in Feb or March, but not sure if I can convince myself yet.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 16:50 (twenty years ago)

also if any of you need someone to play some records, I think it'd be really good to play while I was in NYC, I can send a mix or whatever is normal, no worries though if it's a hassle or not right!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Ah, but March?

early reports from the weather service from 2006 say March will likely come in like lion, but go out like a lamb.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 17:09 (twenty years ago)

also if any of you need someone to play some records, I think it'd be really good to play while I was in NYC, I can send a mix or whatever is normal, no worries though if it's a hassle or not right!

you don't want to dj here. it sucks.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 17:09 (twenty years ago)

I spent the day arguing by email about the night I play at, it sucks here too right now....

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 17:12 (twenty years ago)

yeah it's ok if I wear my uniform as in the above shot?

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 17:14 (twenty years ago)

NY loves a man in a uniform.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 17:32 (twenty years ago)

also, get in touch when you get here and I'll let you know where the records are at.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 17:45 (twenty years ago)

that was another question, will do. think I'll be over from around the 20th of March to the 30th.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 17:50 (twenty years ago)

that time is hit or miss, because lots of, um, party people, will be down in miami for M3/WMC. though sometimes djs will come up to new york before or after their miami gigs. not sure whats going on this year.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 21:25 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Thursday March 23rd JUSTUS KOHNCKE LIVE PA, TOBIAS THOMAS + THOMAS MEINECKE (Kompakt Records) @ CANAL ROOM

Who's in?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 22:59 (twenty years ago)

what sort of non-dance stuff do you want to do?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 23:05 (twenty years ago)

ooh. me me. oh shit, i might be in miami for m3/wmc though.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 23:05 (twenty years ago)

non dance stuff-anything really, I don't mind, what stuff should someone do when in NYC for the first time?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 23:07 (twenty years ago)

so many things. museums, record stores, parks, historic sites, bars, etc., etc.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 23:29 (twenty years ago)

yeah I guess it can't be condensed easily.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 23:34 (twenty years ago)

well it can, but it helps to have a sense of individual interests/preferences (or the absence thereof).

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 23:59 (twenty years ago)

I found this AWESOME rock in the park the other day, I'll totally show you.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 26 January 2006 01:00 (twenty years ago)

was this rock igneous nabisco? (please say yes)

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 27 January 2006 16:31 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
ok, things I want to do.......where are the best places to do them?

eat a hot dog
see sites of musical/cultural/dance musical interest
do a couple of major obvious tourist things, statue of liberty I suppose, what else is good like this?
maybe go to the MOMA, if this is a worthwhile experience.
is it baseball or football season, this would be cool too I think.
restaurants and bars, what are some really unmissable places, don't have to be upmarket, by any means...
meet ilxors obviously

Also was thinking I could probably do a day trip or day/night trip to somewhere around NYC, cos I'm there quite a while and the friend I'm staying with is rehearsing alot, is there anywhere interesting people would recommend? Or is this not that good an idea?

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:16 (twenty years ago)

eat a hot dog = GRAY'S PAPAYA (ALSO F&B FOR CHICAGO-STYLE)

see sites of musical/cultural/dance musical interest = MORE LATER

do a couple of major obvious tourist things, statue of liberty I suppose, what else is good like this? = MORE LATER, BUT STATUTE OF LIBERTY CAN BE SEEN FROM THE BATTERY PARK ESPLANADE, WHICH IS RECOMMENDED, AND IS NOT SO INTERESTING UP CLOSE. ELLIS ISLAND, HOWEVER, MAY BE WORTHWHILE.

maybe go to the MOMA, if this is a worthwhile experience. = I GATHER IT'S NOT QUITE AS WORTHWHILE AS IT USED TO BE, BUT YOU SHOULD GO. YOU SHOULD ALSO GO TO THE MET, ONE OF THE GREAT MUSEUMS OF THE WORLD.

is it baseball or football season, this would be cool too I think. = NO, BUT IT WILL BE BASKETBALL SEASON.

restaurants and bars, what are some really unmissable places, don't have to be upmarket, by any means... MORE LATER, BUT YOU SHOULD EAT PIZZA, BAGELS AND LOX, AND DELI SANDWICHES AND PICKLES. ALSO, YOU SHOULD DRINK BROOKLYN AND ANCHOR STEAM BEERS.

Also was thinking I could probably do a day trip or day/night trip to somewhere around NYC = IDEAS

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:28 (twenty years ago)

eat a hot dog
Nathans at Coney Island, if you can get out there (well worth it)...

do a couple of major obvious tourist things, statue of liberty I suppose, what else is good like this?
queue for the Empire State Building - go there for 4pm if you want to catch the sunset and then linger to watch stars come out (if it's clear)
i thought the MOMA was suitably great, Guggenheim definitely too
if you like zoos Bronx Zoo is excellent

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:30 (twenty years ago)

Ellis Island is amazing! Go go go go.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:31 (twenty years ago)

(ALSO F&B FOR CHICAGO-STYLE)

you have got to be kidding me. f&b is great but they ain't nowhere near a chicago style.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:40 (twenty years ago)

um, is Ed there now?

terry lennox. (gareth), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:41 (twenty years ago)

if he is, he hasn't surfaced?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:47 (twenty years ago)

re: MOMA

You probably know this already since you're thinking about it specifically, but MOMA's "normal" prices are quite expensive ($20, $12 for students). However, Friday evenings are free from 4-8pm. So plan on going then...

http://www.moma.org/visit_moma/admissions.html

If that doesn't work, then you may want to try the Metropolitan, whose admission prices are only "suggested" and which is definitely worth it in any case.

Mitya (mitya), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:55 (twenty years ago)

Friday evenings are free from 4-8pm

and much more crowded than the middle of a weekday, i would think.

f&b is great but they ain't nowhere near a chicago style.

I thought they purported to be Chicago style? If they do, I obviously can't speak as to whether they succeed, but surely they're closer than anything in London? Is there somewhere closer in NY?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:05 (twenty years ago)

no, they purport to be "european street food," dude.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:13 (twenty years ago)

european street food

ooooh ITALIAN style pizza!

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:41 (twenty years ago)

no, just dawgs.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:43 (twenty years ago)

I could be persuaded to meet up for a drink! "Could" = other people have to name the place and time.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:54 (twenty years ago)

Don't bother with MoMA, or the Guggenheim. Do the following: African / Egyptian collection at the Brooklyn Museum (2nd most comprehensive on earth), the Met (especially European romantics, period rooms, Oceanic collection) and the Natural History Museum (espcially the classic dioramas, the Akeley collection). All of this can cost you $0.15 (at a donation of 5c each time). Don't be shy about this: The Met, for instance, receives 0.6% of its income from admissions. They don't give a fuck.
Hot Dogs: Papaya. It's too early to go to Coney Island - it'll be deserted, and not in a good way. Eat street pizza, but make sure you avoid Sbarros and other chains.
Don't bother with Century 21. It's crap, and you can find better clothes elsewhere.
Don't bother with the Empire State building or Ellis Island. The former takes too long, and you feel like you're in a sheep run. The latter is one of the worst immigration museums on earth. Instead, go to 125th St. past the Apollo, then the west side, past Grant's Tomb, the old churches, Columbia. Go see the schrapnel from the 1921 terrorist attack on Wall St. Go see a band at the Mercury Lounge. Drink a strong martini at Temple Bar. Walk over the Brooklyn Bridge to the Brooklyn Heights boardwalk, and imagine where the WTC was. Buy some hip hop at Beat Street on Fulton Mall. Go for a run in Prospect Park.

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 01:03 (twenty years ago)

They have Anchor Steam in New York?

Can someone link to the thread where gabbneb asks if he should bypass SF in favor of Monterey?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 01:09 (twenty years ago)

I didn't ask if I should bypass, only how much time I should spend. (And I am theoretically going to show up early October this year over two weekends with Yosemite, Monterey, and Napa inclusive)

paulhw is pretty otm

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 01:16 (twenty years ago)

[THIS IS AN ASIDE TO GABBNEB: Book yourself a reservation for a free tour of the Anchor Steam brewery, weekdays - reservation only... oh and all you can drink beer...

See? Little things like this would be helpful to know!]

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 01:40 (twenty years ago)

take the 11pm elevator ride up to the observation deck at rockefeller center.

no bones, Wednesday, 1 March 2006 02:53 (twenty years ago)

eat a hot dog: dash dog @ essex and rivington on the lower east side. Get a stoner dog

R.I.P. Concrete Octopus ]-`: (ex machina), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 03:10 (twenty years ago)

eat a hot dog
yeah f&b is definitely not chicago-style. they have like 'fancy' hot digs with guacamole and fresh diced tomatoes. stuff like that. i dont think you can get chicago hot dogs in new york except at shake shack which is closed for the winter... but crif dogs on st.marks is really good, and they have FRIED HOT DOGS. ask them for extra crispy.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 05:06 (twenty years ago)

Shake Shack will reopen March 21. I was going to recommend going there for the burgers.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 05:40 (twenty years ago)

I just got back from a secret mission. See my FLickr for details. Go see the Transit Museum, it is great. Also the Whitney Biennial is starting this week, that should be good. If your there on a Friday in April, go see a friend's performance art, theatre, pantomime +casual nudity thing at the Space in Brooklyn.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 10:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm also coming to NYC, but I reckon it'll be late April before I can get time off work. I want to do shopping, some galleries, maybe coney island and some drinks with you guys.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 10:26 (twenty years ago)

and i am going in may (i think)

a, did you get my mail(s)?

hilary duff (gareth), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 10:31 (twenty years ago)

Yes, but now is teh first oppertunity I've had to read them properly. Back to you in about an hour?

Hillary Duff?!

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 10:36 (twenty years ago)

I might be passing through again soon, on my way to Miami, Richmond and Houston for work.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 10:37 (twenty years ago)

richmonds pretty good for thrifting. will you go to croakers?

codename: hilary duff (gareth), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 11:40 (twenty years ago)

What is croakers?

It's for work so I'll have to see what I can fit in. Washington -Richmond Train ride would be good.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 11:44 (twenty years ago)

check my photos on flick, tag:richmond

my mail has spelling mistakes and grammatical errors, as i wrote it in notepad, not word. ive tidied it up now, so its not as appalling as it first appears.

codename: hilary duff (gareth), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 11:51 (twenty years ago)

drinks tomorrow night?

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 11:55 (twenty years ago)

i think im going to the legion tomorrow night, actually i'll start a thread

codename: hilary duff (gareth), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 12:13 (twenty years ago)

Oh, to see that band? The Morning After Girls are playing then. I might be going. Anyway, this a a New York thread, we shouldn't derail it with talk of Shoreditch.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 12:17 (twenty years ago)

The above Justus gig seems not to be happening anymore : (

On the plus side, I am DJing at Subtonic, on Friday the 24th. Not sure what time exactly, but if anybody wants to come along that'd be cool! I know very little about the venue or the night, I'm just happy to be playing somewhere.

I am in NYC from next Tuesday for about 8 days, so would be up for going for a drink in a non dance music place too sometime if anyone is around, though I'm not sure who exactly lives in New York and posts here! Also probably want to go record shopping someday, and my friend whom I'm staying with might not be the right person for the job so dance dudez might help me out, or let me know where the best shops are.

So yeah let this be the thread where stuff goes down....

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:06 (twenty years ago)

wow! Tom and I are going to be in NYC again then too. I will be otherwise engaged most of the Saturday but Tom not so otherwise engaged. I never go record shopping so you maybe have a record shopping buddy or two...?

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:17 (twenty years ago)

I have been been studying Father Ted episodes in order to impress you, Ronan.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:20 (twenty years ago)

it'd be good to meet you guys if it's possible....I'm pretty much free most of the time......

x-post, that's good tracer, you didn't meet any more of my friends at Optimo the last time I take it?

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:24 (twenty years ago)

subtonic is good. i'll definitely be around all week. i suggest you go to academy records in brooklyn on friday or saturday as ilxor ian johnson works there, and they have a pretty large selection of dance records fo' cheap.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:25 (twenty years ago)

oh the Saturday is my birthday too actually, I just realised!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:31 (twenty years ago)

well there you go, saturday sounds good.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:33 (twenty years ago)

Yeah you'll like Subtonic! I'll try to stop by on Saturday as well.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:41 (twenty years ago)

I missed out on the Don Hill's party sadly! I only caught up w/stirmonster et al a couple of days later when they played at Avalon (neé Limelight) for Motherfucker and I went home "early" (4am).. no G1ta in sight. Anyway it will be great to have you here for your birthday! I'm sure we can find some entertaining alternative to the cancelled Kohncke action.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:42 (twenty years ago)

re sports again, while there are NBA (recommended, though the Knixcks suck right now) and NHL games at Madison Square Garden, the big events this time of year are in college basketball. the NCAA tournament isn't in NY, but you could see the semifinals of the NIT (the championship league, perhaps, to the NCAA's premiership?) at MSG on the 28th.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:48 (twenty years ago)

Is it very expensive to go and see games?

I'm sort of sick at the moment so trying to avoid too much drinking, though some drinking is inevitable and necessary!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:50 (twenty years ago)

at the moment at least there are ~$25 tix available for the NIT semifinals. seeing the Knicks would cost $40+.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:58 (twenty years ago)

It is pretty pricey for MSG tix. If you want to see some basketball I think the Nets are your answer here. They're wayyy better than the Knicks this season, too. NEW JERSEY AHOY. (Their arena is actually only like 30 minutes away by bus.) It looks like the two games during your trip are against Minnesota and Phoenix, which should be good games! - http://www.nba.com/nets/schedule/

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 21:00 (twenty years ago)

yeah, I dunno if New Jersey offers the same experience as MSG, and it's harder to get to, but you'll definitely see better games there

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 21:02 (twenty years ago)

Nets vs Phoenix at $15 looks like a winner

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 21:05 (twenty years ago)

I would be up for going to that, if anyone wants to go.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, esp since only the last 3 minutes of a basketball game are interesting... but to see my NBA husband, Steve Nash!?! Yowsa!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 21:20 (twenty years ago)

Can always spend the other hour or whatever drinking beer...and eating

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 21:23 (twenty years ago)

ugh, steve nash? he's no peja. mmm peja.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 21:23 (twenty years ago)

Morbius the baseball snob may or may not be right (my favorite part of the game is when they play 'Ante Up' or some such), but at this time of year Ronan can't even get a tour of Yankee Stadium

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 21:30 (twenty years ago)

I found this AWESOME rock in the park the other day, I'll totally show you.
-- nabisco (--...), January 26th, 2006.

Great Nabisco post!

the bellefox, Tuesday, 14 March 2006 22:07 (twenty years ago)

i'm djing this:

http://www.callingallkids.tv/index_ny.html

next wed. it remains to be seen if the kids will dig the sounds, but I'll no doubt sugar-coat.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 01:06 (twenty years ago)

So anyway I am looking forward to having Tracer and Ronan drink the beers with me while I am in town for Allyzay's bridal shower. Or something. Who else likes this idea besides me. Seriously, help.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 15 March 2006 01:13 (twenty years ago)

I will say that DBA was not a bad experience, except perhaps for RJG, since I broke his ribs there, not on purpose though. Or did we already decide what happens on Saturday? I mean, it's a Saturday, if you don't own a 16-track and a sampler the only thing to do is imbibe. Backyard smoking area.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 15 March 2006 01:16 (twenty years ago)

Saturday sounds cool, the only provisional problem is that if I'm DJing Friday I might feel really shit on Saturday, I don't mean that I'll go crazy and do loads of drugs, just am pretty fucked healthwise these days so a night out can take it out of me.

I should be ok though, I have faith, I can always go home sort of early on Friday!

Might try and check that out Dan, btw.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 11:19 (twenty years ago)

I would like to join you guys at some point as long as Tombot promises not to accidentally break my ribs.

Also Ronan, two beers at the basketball game will cost as much as the ticket.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Go see that weird dude Gadi's (Gatti? Gatty?) store, full of antique psycho-junk. It's just down from Katz's deli. Medical charts, antiquated science props, autopsy photos, farm machinery...... nuff rad shit!

That was my only time in New York actually. It was about a year ago today. I got manna sandiwches and pickles from Katz's deli, which the indy cinema a few doors down let chow on while I watched an advance screening of Steamboy. There was also root beer.

Mestema (davidcorp), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Go and take momus' unreliable tour of the witney biennial, and merciless ly pelt him with offputting remarks.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 15:53 (twenty years ago)

I can't find the dates on the thread, are you there as long as the first friday in April?

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 15:55 (twenty years ago)

Morbius, that is why God invented the hip flask.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

It seems Nick is really getting into his stride giving unreliable tours, and the security guards all love him. It would be like trying to fight with Jiminy Cricket while he told truth/lie Pinocchio-nose dildo jokes. All I can say other than that is have fun trying.

The Rib's Revenge: Tombot, Breakages and BBQ Karma Worldwide is one micromovie I'd pay to see.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 16:15 (twenty years ago)

They don't do patdown searches at the Meadowlands, TH?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 16:22 (twenty years ago)

I don't know, do they?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 16:25 (twenty years ago)

This is what underpants and loose fitting trousers are for.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 16:27 (twenty years ago)

I've never been patted down at the Meadowlands.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 16:29 (twenty years ago)

I leave tomorrow, hooray.

Will probably post here when I'm orientated, if I have anything to post about. Looking forward to seeing some of you at the weekend!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 20 March 2006 22:39 (twenty years ago)

I am here now, staying near West 43rd Street, haven't done much so far, apart from drink a bit....

I am playing on Friday at around 2 in the morning or later, so come along everyone. Not sure what I'm doing tomorrow.
