I NEED AN ACTION MOVIE.

I have at my disposal a projector.

Recommend to me a stupid, visually impressive movie that will go well with lots of beer (also pot).

You have 5 minutes.

gbx (skowly), Friday, 27 January 2006 04:36 (twenty years ago)

Wild Wild West, obv.

RONIN

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 27 January 2006 05:01 (twenty years ago)

die hard definitely does the trick every time too

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 27 January 2006 05:01 (twenty years ago)

i saw this thread and thought "ronin". it's really great. failing that, conan the barbarian, maybe my favorite movie ever, if i'm honest.

geoff (gcannon), Friday, 27 January 2006 05:03 (twenty years ago)

Aliens.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 27 January 2006 05:04 (twenty years ago)

i was gonna say aliens next

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 27 January 2006 05:04 (twenty years ago)

ronin really is the best movie ever though huh

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 27 January 2006 05:05 (twenty years ago)

Matrix trilogy could be good for a beered up laff too.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 27 January 2006 05:06 (twenty years ago)

or cry is more like it

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 27 January 2006 05:10 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha :D

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 27 January 2006 05:12 (twenty years ago)

Now I want to drink beer, smoke pot and watch action movies!
I like The Bourne Supremacy a lot, esp for the fighting and the car chases.

The Indiana Jones movies!

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 27 January 2006 05:25 (twenty years ago)

Does the Empire Strikes Back count as an action movie? There is lots of action!

Freud Junior, a man of science and soft focus (Freud Junior), Friday, 27 January 2006 05:29 (twenty years ago)

Kung Fu Hustle too.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 27 January 2006 05:35 (twenty years ago)

yeah both bourne movies are a good time.

geoff (gcannon), Friday, 27 January 2006 05:41 (twenty years ago)

i looove the bit in ronin where deniro pulls the bullet out of himself, and then later wakes up and the old creepy french spook is showing him his miniature collection (??!?) and explaining how the LEADERLESS SAMURAI would CUT THEMSELVES; i kind of smile and go "ahh, screenwriting"

geoff (gcannon), Friday, 27 January 2006 05:45 (twenty years ago)

I heart Ronin.

...I ended up getting Starship Troopers. Shh.

COMMANDO

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 27 January 2006 06:26 (twenty years ago)

oh wait you wanted visually impressive

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 27 January 2006 06:26 (twenty years ago)

The French film Dobermann (starring Vincent Cassell) is what you ought to see. It's visually striking, morally bankrupt, and totally senseless. Great fun!

The Silence.

Masked Gazza, Friday, 27 January 2006 10:53 (twenty years ago)

Ned's suggestion is #1. That movie is GREAT.
I would also suggest Kung Fu Hustle, but you already went with the boring choice, so oh well.

TOMBOT, Friday, 27 January 2006 13:49 (twenty years ago)

SNAP.

...I had too, the video store was closing and it was the only thing anyone had requested.

I remember Dobermann. I was in France when it came out.

gbx (skowly), Friday, 27 January 2006 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Ronin, OBVIOUSLY. Who doesn't want to get wasted and sit around hollering, "DRAW IT AGAIN. I SAID, DRAW IT AGAIN. WHAT COLOR WAS THE BOATHOUSE???" C'mon.

Second choice: The Transporter

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 27 January 2006 14:27 (twenty years ago)

The Transporter is hot but I don't know how well it would go over with lots of beer (also pot).

Geoff's suggestion of Conan is probably #2.

Does DUNE count as an "action movie?"

TOMBOT, Friday, 27 January 2006 14:30 (twenty years ago)

It counts as visually impressive and Sting is stupid, so it's in.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 January 2006 14:32 (twenty years ago)

Fuck dumb action movies (and Kung Fu Hustle is smart, btw).

An all-time smart one that just came out on DVD: Clouzot's The Wages of Fear.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 27 January 2006 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Funnily enough, a lot of my favourite action movies come from France, the one country you wouldn't think of producing great action films. Dobermann, Leon, Nikita, The Red Circle, Le Samouraï. Ho!...

The Mummy + The Mummy Returns
XxX
The Fast and the Furious
Pitch Black
(it's not that I have a Vin Diesel thing - I was just listing and realized after the fact what they had in common. maybe I do have a Vin Diesel thing.)

Things that are awesome:
- Friday night hanging out and not in a bar (which is fine, but not right now).
- getting email from G about hanging out in near future to watch RONIN.
- coming home and seeing that THE TRANSPORTER is hanging out in my dwnlds folder.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Saturday, 28 January 2006 06:18 (twenty years ago)

I have no problem admitting to my Vin Diesel thing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 January 2006 18:16 (twenty years ago)

Greg and M and I just watched Ronin. What. is . it. about?
We think we know. But we are unsure. We also really really enjoyed it. But.
If you can help, we will be better.

isnt it about a man?

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Friday, 10 February 2006 05:39 (twenty years ago)

its about the quest for meaning in a world turned upside down, the nature of honor and betrayal, and upholding one's dignity in the face of humiliation. plus car chases and shit.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 10 February 2006 05:51 (twenty years ago)

in other words, it's about ILX.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 10 February 2006 05:52 (twenty years ago)

OK we have boiled our list down to a few KEY QUESTIONS.

1) Are there Russians? If there are russians, are they from Russia? Why do they hate ballet?

2) Why does Deidra betray the hitman dudes and drive off?

3) Does Gregor teleport when he first steals the case? Isn't he at home doing the logistics with magic tracking devices? How come he is suddenly in the thick of shit?

4) WHY DOESN'T JEAN RENO FIND OUT WHAT'S IN THE CASE? (Rrrobyn says this is because he has learnt the true meaning of friendship and is doing a thesis so she is prob right abt this I think?)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 10 February 2006 06:30 (twenty years ago)

See, no one knows!

p.s. I had a dream last night and Stellan Skarsgard was in it. For a while. It was weird.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 10 February 2006 15:41 (twenty years ago)

2. FOR TWOO WUV. Also because her IRA boss is a shit and a double-crosser anyway.

4. Well, no wonder Jean Reno doesn't look in the case, since he's a true friend and also he's doing his thesis -- he must be very busy already! Too busy for cases!

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 February 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

ALSO KEY QUESTION #5

so pretty early in the film vincent like chats to and hires a random oldish bald dude in a car, the first time he says "I went to high school with him"? This guy then reappears right at the end in the chase after the ice skating and runs around for a while but doesn't seem to do anything and it isn't clear what side he's on and then he vanishes again. WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 10 February 2006 19:42 (twenty years ago)

he doesn't hire him, he gets intel from him. he's a cia guy

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 February 2006 19:44 (twenty years ago)

I JUST AMBUSHED YOU WITH A CUP OF COFFEE

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 February 2006 19:44 (twenty years ago)

Is that the guy who helps him out with the phone tracking thing? I just assumed he was a fellow CIA agent and Vincent had to present him as a buddy to keep his continued affiliation with the agency the secret that it is. Would have to watch again to double-check, though. XP to slocki: exactly.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 February 2006 19:45 (twenty years ago)

we missed the cia thing entirely! explain more!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 10 February 2006 19:47 (twenty years ago)

What huh??? How does the movie make ANY SENSE if you don't get the CIA part?? Hold on, am on phone and will elaborate when I get off.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 February 2006 19:59 (twenty years ago)

I thought he was EX-CIA!

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Wait that's Sam though!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Laurel THEY CHASED EACH OTHER IN CARS

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:02 (twenty years ago)

crucial dialogue from climax:

"I never left."

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:02 (twenty years ago)

I blame my inability to decipher plot and character motivation in this film entirely on watching The Transporter and The Transporter 2 essentially back to back a couple weekends ago. It's amazing I can even type really.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:03 (twenty years ago)

Who says I Never Left?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:04 (twenty years ago)

(I feel we should watch Ronin again next time I am in Montreal. It could be a thing.)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:04 (twenty years ago)

WHAT DOES CAR CHASING HAVE TO DO WITH ANYTHING? EXPLAIN PLEASE.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:05 (twenty years ago)

he never left!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:06 (twenty years ago)

You guys should never watch a spy movie again.

TOMBOT, Friday, 10 February 2006 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Jean Reno doesn't NEED to know what's in the case because the REAL MacGuffin is SEAMUS

TOMBOT, Friday, 10 February 2006 20:07 (twenty years ago)

I can't tell what Greg is trying to say about the car chasing.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:08 (twenty years ago)

I have a feeling I wouldn't understand any of this, either. I'm terrible at figuring out movies when they involve sinister, underhanded plots and lots of well-dressed men.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:09 (twenty years ago)

tombot otm

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:09 (twenty years ago)

Is Vincent cia or not?

Laurel, I was being daft :( I just liked that they chased each other!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:09 (twenty years ago)

There is an indicator earlier on in this thread that probably explains at least part of why we didn't understand this movie.
xpost - slocki wins!

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:11 (twenty years ago)

I maintain that I actually understood it but that understanding has not yet reached my conscious mind.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:11 (twenty years ago)

in the end it's vincent who's the ronin

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:15 (twenty years ago)

OK you people. Watch it sober next time!

Right, so no, Vincent is not CIA, but the only "man in car" encounter I can think of is the one Sam engages in to get Gregor's cell phone tracked. I don't know what other "bald man in car" you're talking about. Sam is still CIA, he "never left", and he never cared about the case, he just wanted Seamus out of commission. Which is also why he scared Deirdre off at the end, because he was aiming for her boss specifically and wanted her safely out of the way.

I havn't seen Transporter 2 yet. Does it still have Jason Whatsisface in it? I will Netflix.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:18 (twenty years ago)

btw Andy posting Emperor Of The North up there is fucking awesome, best fight scene ever filmed, ever, and quite likely Lee Marvin's baddest ass role, yes, as a hobo, yes, a hobo named "A Number One," yes, a hobo named "A Number One" who has to beat Ernest Borgnine the maniacal train conductor mano a mano on the back of a moving locomotive.

TOMBOT, Friday, 10 February 2006 20:18 (twenty years ago)

What is Transporter (and Transporter 2 for that matter)?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:19 (twenty years ago)

I did get that putting Seamus out of commission was the point in the end! Yet I didn't realize it was Sam's point. aha. Thank you!

Transporter and Transporter 2 are French-produced action movies meant for a certain mood, when nothing but action will do, forget about plot really. And none of the actors are big Hollywood names, so it's kind of nice that way. Also: explosions, oil fights, car chases.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:25 (twenty years ago)

And precision-kicking stuff in midair into tight spots.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:43 (twenty years ago)

I'm not precisely complaining about the no-shirt policy, but it's more the shaved head and mocking, laconic grin that kill me.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:46 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if my interpretation of the word "kill" in that sentence is right or wrong. He's no Vin Diesel, another shaved-head, laconic-grin competitor, but when he's in action he's in ACTION.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Le petit morte, if you like.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 10 February 2006 21:12 (twenty years ago)

So I will be avoiding Transporter and Transporter 2, then, is what you're saying.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 10 February 2006 21:20 (twenty years ago)

I actually kinda liked the first one, but it was a funny-once as jokes go and I won't be bothering with #2.

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Friday, 10 February 2006 21:22 (twenty years ago)

Action bores me, mostly. Sorry!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 10 February 2006 21:23 (twenty years ago)

haha, but action is necessary for certain things or moods! Maybe you need a certain kind of action movie. I'm reminded of Blast Time, a making-of video about a hypothetical action movie directed by Woody Allen and starring Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson, by the awesome guys we've been championing on the googlevideo thread.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 10 February 2006 22:03 (twenty years ago)

Okay, that sounds interesting, haha.

I don't know, I just tend to zone out during movies with action sequences!

til the power failure (darraghmac), Saturday, 14 January 2012 22:11 (fourteen years ago)

Great bad action movie: Invasion U.S.A. Chuck Norris may be played out, but it's by far the stupidest and most over-the-top action movie of the 80s, in my opinion. Basically every Chuck Norris "I'm an AMERICAN MAN" cliche in purest form, plus a ridiculous Red Dawn-derived plot where Soviets try to invade America.

Had no idea they even made a sequel to Death Race 2000. The appeal of that movie was its low-budget schlockiness, at least for me ... not sure how you'd recreate that these days.

Ronin's great. Remember watching that one over and over back in the highschool days.

Anyone see To Live and Die in LA? Just caught that on TV a few weeks ago. Apparently by the same guy who made the French Connection. Great 80s cop/action movie ... the characters feel way more human and vulnerable than usual action fare, so the action scenes felt queasy almost, and had a pretty interesting dark underbelly/seediness to it.
