how many "original" (ca. 2000-2002?) ilxors are still around with any regularity?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 07:15 (nineteen years ago)

tom e, ally, ned. i started posting in like august of 2001 but i was pretty much a semi-lurker until 2003 or so.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 07:19 (nineteen years ago)

i love reading those really, really old threads where everyone's either super-serious or drolly 'british,' the pinefox posts on every ilm thread and ally mentions richey manic in like every other sentence.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 07:23 (nineteen years ago)

my very first thread, jan. 2003: Maurice Chevalier, C or D?

(just missed the golden age)

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 07:27 (nineteen years ago)

First post to ILM 19 March 2001
First post to ILE 19 June 2001

OMG, fifth birthday approaching.

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 08:04 (nineteen years ago)

I am.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 08:18 (nineteen years ago)

i started posting on ilx in 2001. but not really that regularly. and only because lots of my sinister pals were here..

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 08:37 (nineteen years ago)

I lurked for a few months, then eventually plucked up courage to post in about June 2002. I started that annoying "Virtual Bar" thread, which I guess was a sort of forerunner of the Watercooler/general chit-chat threads.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 08:57 (nineteen years ago)

I think I first came here in the beginning of March 2001 and started posted around the end of that month. FIVE YEARS? Eep. I had some time off (completely or *switching personas*) though. :-) I think it's funny that I'm an OGILX cause I remember at the time I never viewed myself as an old skooler (mostly because that's not how the others saw me). Does that make sense?

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 09:30 (nineteen years ago)

First posts I can find by me are a splurge-out of appaling naivete on april 14th 2001. I didn't lurk at all, I just leapt in, and got j-pwnd by r carmody haha.

Blame it on Momus.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 09:46 (nineteen years ago)

JEL is still with us. Plus TAD

Mr. Latham Green (hanle y 3000), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 09:48 (nineteen years ago)

i'm from late '01

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 09:53 (nineteen years ago)

First post was May 2nd 2002. Blimey. A quick search reveals that it was *drumroll* something to do with the BBC.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 09:53 (nineteen years ago)

i made one post (not logged in iirc) in summer 2002 on a thread about interviews with musicians on (presumably) ilm. haven't found it since though.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 10:03 (nineteen years ago)

I've been through Gandhi, Windsor and Wally's affair, and I'm here. Amos 'n' Andy, mah-jongg and platinum hair, and I'm here. I got through Abie's Irish Rose, five Dionne babies, Major Bowes, had heebie-jeebies for Beebe's bathysphere. I lived through Brenda Frazier and I'm here. I've gotten through Herbert and J. Edgar Hoover, gee, that was fun and a half. When you've been through Herbert and J. Edgar Hoover, anything else is a laugh. I've been through Reno, I've been through Beverly Hills, and I'm here. Reefers and vino, rest cures, religion and pills, and I'm here. Been called a pinko commie tool, got through it stinko by my pool, I should have gone to an acting school, that seems clear, still, someone said, "She's sincere," so I'm here.

Black sable one day, next day it goes into hock, but I'm here. Top billing Monday, Tuesday you're touring in stock, but I'm here. First you're another sloe-eyed vamp, then someone's mother, then you're camp, then you career from career to career. I'm almost through my memoirs... and I'm here.
?I've gotten through "Hey, lady, aren't you whoozis? Wow! What a looker you were." Or, better yet, "Sorry, I thought you were whoozis, whatever happened to her?" Good times and bum times, I've seen 'em all and, my dear, I'm still here. Flush velvet sometimes, sometimes just pretzels and beer, but I'm here. I've run the gamut. A to Z. Three cheers and dammit, c'est la vie. I got through all of last year, and I'm here. Lord knows, at least I was there, and I'm here! Look who's here! I'm still here!

Momus (Momus), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 10:17 (nineteen years ago)

I can hear Syd Barret singing that one!

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

End of October 2001 I think, but I've never stopped feeling that the door to exclusive old-ILE was closed by the time I arrived.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 11:21 (nineteen years ago)

I always thought you were here before me, I must admit.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 11:30 (nineteen years ago)

I am still here after a fashion, but my appetite these days for interweb scrapping is pretty much zero. So, I try to avoid anything which looks like it might turn into a fight. And so I'm mostly absent from ILE. And everyone is a winner as a result.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 11:36 (nineteen years ago)

I've been here since 2000. Just you try to get rid of me.

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

As if we would want to get rid of you! I remember you scared me! :-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 12:06 (nineteen years ago)

I'm more a lurker than a poster, though I want to post more to ILC.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

First post to ILM: 17th July 2001
First post to ILE: 20th August 2001

I am well in the old-school, and yet I remain in the shadows, semi-lurking, for eternity. Sigh.

emil.y (emil.y), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 12:22 (nineteen years ago)

i guess i've been posting off and on since 2002, but i've never thought of myself as og.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

i'm another one who would count as nu-ilx even though i've been an ilxor since the days before ILE.

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 12:41 (nineteen years ago)

posting since late 2002

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not v original

I'm surprised that dog latin is

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

I've been here way too long.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

i counted dog latin as a noob until about a year ago.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

I came here in October 2001... Been mostly lurking lately...

Dave will do (dave225.3), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 12:52 (nineteen years ago)

my first ilx post was 11th march 2001 on an ilm thread. thqat's pretty early isn't it?

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

i think the reason i've never been accepted into the fold of "old-ilx" is cos i just chanced upon said thread through a random google of Laurie Anderson's "O Superman". ILM must've just got going at the time. So yeh, I never was part of sinister or Freakytrigger or anything like that.

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

The Sinisters and the Momusites were latecomers, as far as I'm concerned. I was here when it was just FreakyTrigger, AMA and the mysterious Star Chamber.

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:21 (nineteen years ago)

DID SOMEONE SAY STAR CHAMBER.

As for me, I joined yesterday. Who are you people again?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

Oh no, I'm going to be flayed for revealing secrets, am I not? God, this is worse than the Freemasons, you can never escape...

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

it was dan perry who did the first ever post (apart from the original welcome message). Where did he appear from?

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

Fear not, s-c is retired. It was a treat, though.

Dan did the first one on ILE, but that was formed about ten months after ILM and the first post/thread there, which Tom started. So a lot of ILM regulars were immediately on ILE by default.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

ah, you're quite right

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

I tend to blitz the thing when I'm in Japan (as I am now).

Momusites came here because I said on my website this was "an intelligent community".

Momus (Momus), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, I came here because I clicked on a link in one of your essays, which lead to "i hate music", thus to "i love music".

It was an "intelligent community"! I think it still is, except now the intelligent community is cleverly concealed within a larger group of raving maniacs.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

My first post was in February 2003, so my three-year anniversary is right around the corner. I definitely belong to nu-ILX, though I guess by now I'm more like "old nu-ILX". It's kinda fun to realize some people (like Stevem) who I'd thought had been here a long time before me actually made their debut only a few months before I did.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

who are the momusites!?!?!

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

i tend to think scottish = sinister, is that fair?

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

A few old-ilx people came here either via Momus' old website, or some Momus mail list. IIRC Robin C, who doesn't post here anymore was a momus mail lister.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

First posts to ILE and ILM were in July 2001 I think, although I only had sporadic Interweb access in them days and wasn't really a prominent part of ILE's first flush of youth.

There are more Sinisterites in London than Scotland, I think, although the Scottish ones are more prominent.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

Other Noted Momusites = Anthony, Suzy

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

oic!

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

i think i found this by googling 'taylor parkes' or maybe 'ian penman'.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

Not all the Scot lot are from Sinister, though several of themknew each other from there.

Sinisters were here from the very beginning, Kate.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

My first post was in February 2003, so my three-year anniversary is right around the corner.
Oh my god, that really struck me how much time I have wasted.. It's fucking 2006 now? Key-rist-ah.

Dave will do (dave225.3), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

There were a few individuals who happened to be on Sinister here at the beginning - there wasn't a mass influx of Sinisterites who hadn't been on FT until later.

Otherwise you might as well say that the SP*/No-Fi contingent were a sinister (heh) presence from the beginning because of me, Ned, Chris B and Noodles! (Or did Noodles come over from 22, not SP*?)

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

it was funny how people i knew from nme chat i also found posted here when i eventually started doing so, although that is sort of how i heard about it in the first place.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:52 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not really aware that there was a mass influx of anybody apart from FT-ers at the beginning, since the thing was set up to be the FT comments section (if I remember rightly). It's not very important, though.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

for some reason i posted one thing, in 2002, then went a whole year without even looking.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

Without actually seeking my first post, it would be almost exactly four years ago, Jan or Feb 2002. I feel middle-aged in these terms, as well as most other terms.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

this is all very strange. i assumed that there were a lot more people here already before i joined. surprised i've been here longer than steve, matt dc and martin skidmore.

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

Sometimes it frightens me how long I've been posting here. I could have put the word count I've stuck here into several books.

HMMMMMM.

Dan ("Just A Bit Of Fun, So Let's Keep Cool.") Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

my first post was in october 2001, but i was part of that sinister group - SECOND WAVE of sinister group really

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

snap, except nov 2001, for me

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

My first post was in February 2003, so my three-year anniversary is right around the corner. I definitely belong to nu-ILX, though I guess by now I'm more like "old nu-ILX".

Ditto to all of this.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

"I'm more a lurker than a poster, though I want to post more to ILC."

I remember you couldn't imagine there were lurkers here so we started a thread for only lurkers. ROFL!

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

i don't really like to think about it

james van der beek (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

I think I started in May 2001. Nick did tell me about ILM (I think it was 'look at this thread about Bobby Gillespie, they're tearing him apart HA HA' or somesuch) but I've never been involved with his lists/newsgroups.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

Hi Suzy!

Momus (Momus), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

Hello! I owe you rather lengthy mail!

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

My first post on ILM was Dec 20th 2000, way before ILE existed. ILM leading lights were Tom, Ned, Robin, Pinefox, Tim H and many sinsters. I remember Geordie Racer, Dave q, DG, Katie G, Guy Beckett and a million others. Mark Sinker appeared early in 2001 I reckon. My first FAP was early 2002 IIRC in a boozer up the Gray's Inn Road.

I still like ILM, but I think a lot of the good stuff has been talked to death. Much of ILE doesn't seem of interest now, but I check in daily all the same. I doubt anyone would bother if I quietly slid away, but I'm not quite ready to go yet. I would like to FAP more as ILX IRL >>>>> the bloody web.

I am enjoying IMM.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

My first post was on 7 October 2002. I was posting about feces by mid December.

A BOLD QUAHOG (ex machina), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

I would like to FAP more as ILX IRL >>>>> the bloody web.

And do you come out whenever I visit? NO. (Extenuating circumstances noted of course.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

I started posting in late 2002, like Jon. I believed in the war then. I found one post on ILM where I admitted to buying like 40 CDs in a month, on my USAF paycheck! I think I've sold half of them on Amazon already.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

thinking about all the various life changes, moves, girlfriends, jobs, and beers in the last five years, all bracketed within ilx, makes my head hurt.

james van der beek (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

You can say that again. (God, what a crap line.) I thought about this when I pushed out my baby. Not really. But yeah, I never would have thought I'd be married and a mommy.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

I have said this before, but it remains (outside of my family and a few close friends) the longest, most consistent thing in my life. I have never been to a school, worked a job, had a band or a Relationship that has lasted this long.

I'm not sure if that's inspiring or pathetic.

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

(If i wanna see myself as the *wild and kuh-razee chixor* I used to be, I just have to revisit that thread where I posted drunk. Rhum and ILX did not mix well.)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

x-post to Ned

(Thud! Thwack!)

That's the sound of me beating myself o'er the head for missing your visits, Ned. I can't remember what happened the last time - I know I was around because it was just after the bombs IIRC. I am pretty disorganized - anything could have happened. Come again!

Incidentally, I owe you a CD in return for the Disco Inferno goodness, are you interested in a sort of home-made UK-punk Nuggets thing? I don't know if that's yr cup of tea?

Dr.C (Dr.C), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

Could be fun! But I think you said something about how you had a copy of the second or third N.O. show ever...

And yes, I do plan on returning when I can. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

yo.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

My first ILM posts appear to be from December 2001, mentioning Stump, Kate Bush, Palais Schaumburg and Madness, amongst other things.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

(was momusite lured by promises of "intelligent community" btw)

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

haha saw you coming etc.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

Oh TVL, I'm so sorry.

Dan (Remembering The "ME VS GURLS" Thread) Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

i started about three years ago, along with tuomas and jaymc i guess. an obscure and boring poster, i'm only known for two things: a) the bruise on my leg, b) being so lit at the NYC FAP last summer that i seemed developmentally disabled. oh well.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

Ah I like Mandee's designation: I am from 2001 but only really 2nd-wave Sinister, and I never thought I belonged in the ILDiscourse so I dropped off for a while. And then came back.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

ILM: late July 2001
ILE: late September 2002

I'm really sorry about everything.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

IlE - 9/11

ILM - not if I can help it

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

xpost Ned **But I think you said something about how you had a copy of the second or third N.O. show ever...**

Oh yes! Blackpool 1980. It's low-fi, but fantastic. I can squeeze it onto a CD with a stereo Joy Division mixing desk set from the year before if you're interested.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

Bryan, it's okay. You didn't shoot the deputy.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

Was a lurker back in the alt.music.alternative days (at which time I was already Da Threadkilla, so I wasn't inclined to delurk).

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

I first heard about ILE from Carsmile Steve emailing me in early 2002. My first post was in March 2002, so I'm not any kind of original. I have posted to ILM exactly once IIRC.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

When did ILE start, exactly?

I thought I started on ILM in 2002 (on a Mos Def thread), but I remember when ILE started (even though I didn't post anything here for awhile).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

ILE started in late June 2001.

Oh yes! Blackpool 1980. It's low-fi, but fantastic. I can squeeze it onto a CD with a stereo Joy Division mixing desk set from the year before if you're interested.

Done. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

as Latham says I was here from the start of ILE.

I think I was the 5th poster on the first thread here.

ILM? March 2000 maybe?

I got to ILM via a link from jeff-pttl's message board, early to mid 2002 I think? A bit before we went off greenspun anyway.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

Sometime in '02, I think. Just caught the tail end of the "greenspun" era.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

May I be the first to say: geezer's kiosk?

Aimless (Aimless), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

I remember you couldn't imagine there were lurkers here so we started a thread for only lurkers. ROFL!

I remember being genuinely surprised by how many lurkers then posted on the thread. This is the only message board I've ever posted for a longer time, and I wasn't aware of Interweb dynamics, so I couldn't imagine so many folks would be content in only reading what others say. Also, I'm the type of person who wants to join in on any conversation that's going on.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

I got to ILM via a link from jeff-pttl's message board, early to mid 2002 I think?

Whoa, I had no idea! Next time you're in Chicago, come visit all of us.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

August 2nd 2001 for ILE - I started my first thread, about Josie & the Pussycats, later that month, which may explain why people remember me from then.

Earlier that year for ILM. I'd like to claim my first post was on the Death Of Pop thread - which came up in conversation again this week (and blimey, Oxide and Neutrino = 5 years old?). It was actually passing on an anecdote on an Avalanches thread in February. I told mark s to Fuck Off on my fifth post! Also I mentioned a Stan Rogers song called Lies as being something that will always move me to tears, except I've forgotten it since.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 2 February 2006 01:36 (nineteen years ago)

Posting since Nov 2002, still here.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Thursday, 2 February 2006 01:41 (nineteen years ago)

(also I'm amazed at how many of the old guard are younger than me!)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 2 February 2006 01:42 (nineteen years ago)

I was an indie when I started posting. A sort of "son of Peel, son of True" yankophile indie. And I lived in london. And I wasn't married.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Thursday, 2 February 2006 01:44 (nineteen years ago)

think I'm much the same

less unhappy, probably

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 2 February 2006 01:45 (nineteen years ago)

Looks like I started posting on ILM in February of 2002 (and lurked before that), and on ILE around March or April.

I swore that my first ILM post was on the Mos Def thread, but apparently I posted about samba, Keith Jarrett, and Sisters of Mercy before that!

(also a lot of embarassing posts about a certain band that has strong feelings about the machine.)

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 2 February 2006 01:56 (nineteen years ago)

Gravitated over in the summer of '02. Met up with strangers/posters at a bar in Brooklyn that fall, and cemented relationships/fuelled the addiction. I'm in and out now: I don't really start threads anymore and I don't tend to get as invested in things. Can't believe it's been that long, actually. When I started posting everyone was hearkening back to the grand old days of ILE.

I've only been here since Feb '03 but funnily, I used to lurk on AMA and lists like 4AD-l going back as far as '95. No one would remember me from then tho (I dont even know what handle I used, so who knows).

Yeah, I started in '01 and have kept up a ceaseless stream of very occasional posts.

Paul Eater (eater), Thursday, 2 February 2006 04:06 (nineteen years ago)

I'm the laziest lurker in town, but I've been here since April 2001.

I think I'm gonna post a photo in the "What do you look like?" thread. First one in 5 years!

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 2 February 2006 04:06 (nineteen years ago)

My first post (can't remember what my handle was though) was sometime in '03--POSSIBLY in '02--to a Boom Bip thread of all things! I mainly lurked after that, though I've been posting infrequently for awhile now.

I first heard about ILX via either Jody Beth Rosen's blog or Nate Patrin's blog, which were linked to by a local now-defunct webzine.

Lingbertt, Thursday, 2 February 2006 04:12 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I heard about ILM from Josh Blog, for sure.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 2 February 2006 04:47 (nineteen years ago)

First post to either was Sept 11th, 2001... that day was pretty much the reason. Lots of friends i knew via email were in NYC, and ILX was the main forum where information was being trasmitted the quickest.. I stuck around after that.

Dom iNut (donut), Thursday, 2 February 2006 21:37 (nineteen years ago)

Once upon a time a ILXor's task
Was just to post thoughtfully, what more could you ask?
But then came remixes, scratches, and cuts
It was too much for many, drove some ILXors nuts

Paul Eater (eater), Thursday, 2 February 2006 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

Oh my god Paul!!!!! hahaha

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 2 February 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

But the iLX0r named Ned
Has reigned supreme
As the number one poster on the messageboard scene
So listen to it, check it out, but remember this—
When Ned's in the thread ya know that he's RECKLESS

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 2 February 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

First post to either was Sept 11th, 2001... that day was pretty much the reason.

knew I couldn't have been the only one brought out by 9/11. I might have made a couple of posts before hand but not many as I hadn't known about ILx for long. That day it was one of the only sites I could get to.

Nowadays we'd be poxyfuled in a heartbeat. . .

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 2 February 2006 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe but then came excelsior, poxyfuling, and "what?"s

Paul Eater (eater), Thursday, 2 February 2006 22:07 (nineteen years ago)

I like the original. But I would change my last line to it's reckless, because really, Ned only gets reckless himself very rarely.

i posted a few things in mid-2001 about record stores in chicago, i believe. on ilm. under a different name maybe? i don't remember. aside from dull weeks here and there, i don't think i've been posting too "regularly" for a year or so. and i wasn't posting much at all when i was in europe. so it's been up and down.

ILM since September 2000, ILE on the second day of its existence. ILM got too overwhelming for me after its big growth spurt and ILE stopped feeling like home a fair while back.

ILM :: Feb 2002
ILE :: Dec 2002

I found ILM whilst searching for someone who could explain to me if Andrew WK was some sort of bizarre joke I wasn't getting.

I've changed my name and spent long periods just lurkin since then.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 3 February 2006 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

ILM since the beginning. I crashed the tail end of the AMA crew in 1999. I think one of my earliest posts there was a disclaimer to the effect of only being 16. I'm turning 24 in a few months! I feel like i've grown up in public and front of these people. Only I didn't go through an awkward wild-partying-with-drugs-and-smashing-hotel-rooms phase (or did I?).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 3 February 2006 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

For me ILM/ILE was totally an outward expansion of that AMA-->Freaky Trigger--> continuum, which is a totally self-centered way to look at it, it's odd to think that for others it's the logical progression from Sinister or somethign else (like pataphysics!).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 3 February 2006 17:37 (nineteen years ago)

Haha the second result on that google search is Frances that used to be in the Shimura Curves! IE the only person associated with them who's never posted here (I think).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 3 February 2006 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

It looks like my first was 9/27/02. Yow.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 3 February 2006 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

ILM: May 2001, a post about Colourbox.
ILE: When it started (more or less).

I think I was in just before the big increase in numbers started, and was fairly typical in having no connection to AMA/FT/Sinister or any other cabal. I found it via some random googling, looking for info about car boot sales strangely enough.

Never attended a FAP, though did meet some ilxors at a poptimism event about 18 months ago. One of the many downsides of living in the sticks.

i must have accidentally found ILM (through Freaky Trigger, which was found through Ned's best albums of the 90s list i believe) around the same time it was started because i remember these threads:

* The UK Music Press: Has It Ever Been Good? (Tom, 31st Aug 2000)
* Radiohead Album Cover: What Are They Thinking? (Tom, 30th Aug 2000)
* Byterock: Pop Eats Itself Again? (Tom, 29th Aug 2000)
* 2Step Garage getting very ravey :-) (Richard Jordan, 28th Aug 2000)
* All right, so what bad movies do y'all like? ;-) (Ned Raggett, 28th Aug 2000)
* Bombs Over Baghdad (Ten Don'ts For Honeymooners, 26th Aug 2000)
* What are the most anticipated forthcoming albums for the year 2000? (DJ Martian, 26th Aug 2000)
* Indie Rock: What's Going On? (Tom, 26th Aug 2000)
* Songs About Quitting Your Job? (Tom, 26th Aug 2000)

Despite having been here a while, I still often feel like I know so little about ILX eg I have no idea what the gear/analsex/couch drama was all about or the garethinthetelephonebooth thing was. It's like the Spaghetti Incident.

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Saturday, 4 February 2006 05:57 (nineteen years ago)

The jealousy felt by the a.m.a. collective upon realizing Young Mr. Finney's tender age way back when was a combination of sweet loathing and delicate outrage. (And that was just from me.) Then we later found out how good-looking a feller he is (and he is) and concluded he was invented by a cackling Deity to chastise all of us for our pride. Happily he is, was and remains ever one o' the best.

I've often wondered what might happen if someone from ILX died suddenly, for whatever reason, or whether or not its actually happened to one of the several posters who have stopped posting over the years, especially those from further afield.

-- Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 29 July 2004 12:10 (3 years ago) Link

i've wondered the same. i remember someone mentioning three (known) deceased from ILX. i know of one very tragic instance, but have no idea if there are others or who they were. of course, this is something one could never ask about openly as this is likely ILX's most verboten topic.

sanskrit, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

everyone says 3 but no one ever knows who the third is

DG, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

I don't even know who the second is?

I guess maybe it's something people close to the deceased don't want to discuss? I have no idea, actually.

Pashmina, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

presumably one of the three is the late great Nick K

chaki, with the greatest of respect, fuck off. You want to discuss something where everyone's assuming everyone knows the same as they do then find out they aren't all coming from the same place but no-one wants to come out and actually clarify what they're talking about...oh, wait...

I make no claims of originality, but I am fairly certain I made my first post in 2002, and therefore would qualify under the terms and conditions as set forth in the OP.
