Where is that woman's face?!

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

GINO WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!

He just told that girl that he made a commitment to be aggressively open-shirted for the rest of his life and she was just gonna have to DEAL WITH IT.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

That guy's chest grosses me out more than the harelip.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

Well, it's not the top post, so it will fade off the thread quickly.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I screwed that up. If anyone misses the Schubas show tonight in order to see Gino Vannelli at the House of Blues, I completely understand.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

"aggressively open-shirted" = ROFLEZ

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

I want to point out that despite his revolting stare, he looks a little like Mark Ruffalo in that picture.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

I've never seen Boxing Helena, but surely it's the craziest movie ever?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

I saw it because it has Sherilyn Fenn in it.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

he looks a little like Mark Ruffalo in that picture.

No, he doesn't. I refuse to believe this.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know about "craziest." It has a Tomatometer reading of 17, and the word "boring" appears several times on the page.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

Come on, yes he does! He also looks like Richard "Repeat Offender" Marx.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

I am loving John's deep-seated revulsion to Gino Vanelli. As if he were covered in worms.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

I saw Boxing Helena as a double feature with Madonna's Truth or Dare at this dude Aaron's house in high school. A couple of female friends and I spent the night in his bedroom and fell asleep listening to William Orbit.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

As if he were covered in worms.

Gino Vermicelli

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

Chicago Tribune today:

"A piano, a trombone, a keyboard and a violin walked into a bar. . . .no, it's not a bad joke, its just some of a great local band's gear that will land at Schubas a few times this month with the six members of the band. Stop by for one of their Practice Space residency shows and be greeted by their lush indie-pop orchestrations, not to mention a host of changing opening acts. This time around they'll be joined by Hopewell and Er1c Z13g3nh4g3n."

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

Sometimes I think you Googleproof just cause it's fun.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

Man oh man, I really want to go to Schuba's tonight! Rock and roll weekend does not want to end!!! It's like Audrey II. I gave it life and now it wants MORE BLOOD!

In other news, I saw Boxing Helena and don't recall being revulsed by it and I can't think of many things that would revulse me more than a man cutting off a woman's limbs to keep her captive so... yeah. It must have been boring.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

Jenny, maybe you can have just a LITTLE more rock and roll. Just one more hit. Just one more.

Or maybe wind down slowly. Think of C4n4st4 as rock and roll methodone.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

Oh shit, methadone is bad news.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

I am eating yummy leftover Nepali tofu. Maybe better the second day.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

Ooh, where's that from? (I mean what restaurant, I know where Nepal is.)

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

No restaurant, bitch! Homemade!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

Tell me more about "Nepali" tofu, pls.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

And don't call Amanda a bitch!

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

Whatever, bitch, since when did you cook Nepali anything? Geez.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

(OMG I have a recipe I can post on the blog!)

It's like tofu, potatoes, peas, and spinach in a tomato sauce with tons of spices and a little garlic.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

Only bad thing is that we didn't let the taters cook long enough.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

Whatever, bitch, since when did you cook Nepali anything? Geez.

I think you piece this one together if you think about it. :) :)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

did somebody say TATER?

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

No, you're hearing things.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

kidding. John's clue is in the "we" . . .

by the way, I'm having beer tonight w/ allegra & maybe karen & maybe caitlin.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I hate it when homos talk.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

Ugh. I'm not gonna be able to go to the Canasty/Eric show tonight. I have THE draft of my thesis do tomorrow, and it needs workin' on. I hope you guys understand, and maybe I'll actually go next Monday. Eric, I am crying inside at not being able to hear your Joanna Newsom cover.

Kevin, I am Dave. Short hair, short beard, belly (or as Kenan said, "fat motherfucker"). =regular roundups. also, right after my name is my log in, if you have that turned on, which is Dave M.

regular roundups (Dave M), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

were you at ronny's dave? i don't remember meeting any bearded folk.

most everyone is gone from work until thursday as upper management has a retreat in wisconsin so i'm taking this opportunity to CRANK cococoma through my computer's speakers. good times.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

I am imagining Cococoma as Cocorosie and To Rococo Rot collaboarting on a cover of "Kokomo."

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I was at Ronny's. I mean, it's kind of a pathetic beard. Here.

regular roundups (Dave M), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

I was really late.

regular roundups (Dave M), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

between the no-name gin, the jim beam, and the pabst i don't think i remember. myspace is blocked at work so i don't have a visual off of which to go.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

I was wearing a Cococoma shirt on Sat. night, though it was covered with the Sharks shirt for part of the evening. I was stylin.

I am "working from home" this afternoon. I have the windows open and I'm listening to records. I should probably actually do some work now.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

No, please, rub it in a little more.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:33 (nineteen years ago)

I hate you. I boil with envy.

But wait -- there will still be daylight and warmth when I get home! Huzzah!

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:33 (nineteen years ago)

I believe I will ride home slowly, taking unnecessary back roads, then open all the windows, then put on my ratty old shorts that none of you will ever ever see, then nap while listening to something droney.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

Does applying for four jobs count as a day's work? I am ready for my bike ride now . . .

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and speaking of -- The new Liars album is growing on me. Like a mold or a fungus.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

I say it does. xpost

regular roundups (Dave M), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:37 (nineteen years ago)

bill and lisa make those shirts. they run black hole press for all your t-shirt needs.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

thanks! I'm out of here. 4 job applications down + one follow-up email + one temp agency application.

I'm going to hit the trails!!!

Later, alligators!

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

Bye!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

You have paths! I am envious. I want to take my bike to the Lincoln Park bike trail sometime, but I don't know that it's a good idea. There's really no sense in trying to share a running/biking path with big sausage eatin' motherfuckers taking slow walks. You can't go very fast, because you'll get killed. It's probably safer riding up Ashland.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

Wrong again! People are a lot easier to dodge than cars. The lakefront bike path is really nice.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

The lakefront bike path is really nice.

agreed, i used to ride that from monroe harbor up to hollywood beach with my ex-roommate all the time. once you get clear of belmont it's pretty nice, not too congested.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:00 (nineteen years ago)

The one time I did it last summer was really nice. People-dodging is fun, too!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but with cars, the burden of avoidance is on THEM; with people it's on ME. I just can't handle the responsibility, it's bad for my complexion.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

Does anyone have Neko Case's phone number? I lost it, and I'm pretty sure she wanted me to call her so we could begin our life together.

regular roundups (Dave M), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

I'm terrified to ride on the street, but on a trail with people, I can holler at them that I'm coming, the end. No biggie. It's not that big of a deal - you can always ride on the grass. You can't ride on top of a parked car.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry, Dave, will Rennie Sparks do?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

I think the burden of avoidance is on the cyclist in both cases. It has to be. I just don't want to send some nice little lady bleeding into the gravel.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

Really, though, that's not the issue. The issue is that I want to go fast, and when I want to go fast, people who are taking slow walks really annoy me. That's all it is.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

No biggie -- it's your house and your warming, Jaymc. No pressure!
I'll email you the recipe Jenny.

-- The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (handy_manda@yahoo.com), November 14th, 2005.

No biggie -- hopefully there will be a DVD deal soon and everyone can watch it over and over and over...without the blobs over the criminals' faces.

-- The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (showdown@wormtown.com), January 4th, 2006.

haha. well, no biggie either way. we'll wait and see closer to lunching time.

-- The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (handy_manda@yahoo.com), August 11th, 2005.

It's no biggie Sarah! -- I'm just standing up for my thoroughly mediocre (but NOT horrible) homestate. It's just not as bad as people who drive through it think it is.

-- The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (handy_manda@yahoo.com), September 19th, 2005.

Growing up, I never thought drive-thrus were a big deal. If we wanted to get beer or wine for my dad, we would drive up State Rd. to the drive thru and get some. No biggie.

-- The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (showdown@wormtown.com), January 4th, 2006.

My "real life" friends don't understand ILX either. Dan just thinks I'm a geek, but he's a geek too, so it's no biggie. He's not prone to joining in though. He's also not really prone to all-day chatting, like I am.

-- The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (showdown@wormtown.com), January 16th, 2006.

Don't worry Nick - the train that took Jumanji home came pretty much right away and J+J were there to keep her company. No biggie. I pretty much didn't sleep at all Saturday night. I felt fine yesterday but then today, whoo! Not fine.
Tired.

-- The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (handy_manda@yahoo.com), August 1st, 2005.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

No matter which way you look at it, it's definitely safer than riding in traffic. Plenty of people have whizzed past me on their bikes while I was on my bike -- I'm kinda pokey. No harm done!

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

I hate you.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

Hee. We have completely opposite takes on biking, Amanda! And what is this "grass" of which you speak?

Kenan, I think that when cars are overtaking me (meaning I can't see them) and also they are the bigger, heavier vehicles, the burden of NOT HITTING ME is on THEM. As long as I, y'know, stay out of the middle of their lanes an' shit and I ride halfway defensively. And I'm okay with that. But pedestrians, you'd have to ring your bell and/or shout constantly to warn them not to suddenly sidestep and/or stop to tie shoe, wouldn't you?

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

I want to ride down the path by the lake again. So fun! I feel like most of the time I'm just trying to stay out of the REAL bikers' way, not vice versa.

OH MY GOD. My belly is so full of chocolate shake.

2 hours. 30 minutes.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

But pedestrians, you'd have to ring your bell and/or shout constantly to warn them not to suddenly sidestep and/or stop to tie shoe, wouldn't you?
No, because they're not 10 feet wide -- you can whiz around them NO PROB.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

Oops, Amanda -- you have parentheses in your username, so your e-mail address is exposed when you're quoted (a/k/a the Dan Perry Problem). Want me to ask a moderator to obscure the Yahoo address?

The lakefront path in the summer is the single most terrifying place to ride your bike in all of chicago.

gbx (skowly), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

xpost People are not paying attention. When you're driving, you have to be paying attention to things that are moving just because, you know, you're driving. People, not so much. They're just taking a walk, you know? I don't know how many times I've been on that trail and said, "Your left. Your LEFT! YOUR LEFT!!!" and gotten no response whatsoever. Then when you nearly buxx them, they have the nerve to look like you're being really rude.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

Sarah: I FEEL YOU. I have been getting full on less recently, which can actually only be a good thing for me. But what better thing to be full of than chocolate shake?

John, I think you're forgetting that I'm not Christian anymore. That's okay, though. I'm sure you'll end up touring with my Neko at some point, and all I ask is for you to make me your roadie/keep me in mind when that time comes.

In other news, I start at Pitchfork tomorrow.

I have not yet had a flat further than about 3 blocks from my apt. I do carry a patch kit & tire irons on me, but Evan (or anyone): do you also carry a pump? Or just wheel to the nearest gas station?

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

That's what I said!

I KNOW!

btw, you get my message?

xp i carry a pump, yes.

gas stations and presta valves do not mix, usually.

gbx (skowly), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

ha! my bike ride was short b/c I got a response from one of the jobs already. they have some pre-interview questions they want me to respond to by tomorrow, so i cut the ride short.
and now lookee here . . . all this talk of riding!

i agree with kenan & evan (sorry amanda!). the lake front is a fucking terror. i only ride it in the a.m. or rode, rather.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

where on the path did you guys ride? granted, anywhere between navy pier and north ave. is almost unnavigable (is that a word?) but i'm telling you, north of belmont it's really not bad.

so i rode around the lake of the isles. there's an outer path around the lake that is cement & specifically for cyclists (although there were a few joggers & two strollers on it today) & an inner path made of cedar chips for the joggers. it's quite nice. there's, you know, nature & stuff.

otto: you're totally right about north of belmont being better, but i still avoided taking it home during the warmer months. too many people to dodge & i would get home faster via clark street.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

You guys are bike snobs. I have a shitty Huffy.

Hahahahaha. My bike is 40 years old/a shitty Polish knock-off of a decent English bike/came free. Every factory component is cheap and the parts I've replaced have been as basic as possible; basically up until I change out the pedals there's not a single un-cheap thing about it!

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

i must say that i do too! thus far, anyway. is it possible that my lungs are getting cleaner? the air feels so much better up here & the city is far quieter than chicago. my old-lady-ears like that part.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Laurel but the fact that you're all "it's a Polish bike blablabla I know where the parts came from I fix it myself" proves my point!

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

I'm just saying that I'm not into "bicycle culture" or fixing my bike or whatever -- I just want to ride it occasionally in a place where I won't get hit and killed or hit or kill anything else.

That said, I'm off to class. Free tampons rule. Tootles.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

you know what i love? sharing a cigarette with a girl. in and of itself it's not a big thing but there's something implicit about it. "i choose not only to kill myself in the same manner as you, but from the very same piece of smoldering ash."

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 April 2006 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

People who don't normally smoke always do so kind of awkwardly, anyway, which can be cute. Although as a committed smoker myself I find it irritating that men find that clumsiness so endearing. :)

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 10 April 2006 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

Jenny chided me for going out with a guy who smokes, which got me thinking. I think I have a moderate preference for a smoker as a partner. I don't mean because he would tolerate my smoking, but because I just find smoking attractive in other people, be they friends or dates or whatever. Don't you?

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Monday, 10 April 2006 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

Self-destructiveness and poor decision-making? TOTALLY.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Monday, 10 April 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

I used to date a smoker. Didn't really mind. Now I don't, and that's cool too.

Actually, post-smoking ban, it would be annoying to have to leave the bar a few times an hour or sit by myself everytime.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 10 April 2006 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

That's putting a negative spin on it....

I read in some Malcolm Gladwell book (Blink?) that smoking has traditionally been regarded as being cool not because the smoking makes the person cool, but because people who have "cool" traits tend to pick up smoking. (Those traits being risk-taking, devil-may-care attitude, bad-boyness, disregard for conformity, etc.)

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Monday, 10 April 2006 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

gbx (skowly), Monday, 10 April 2006 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

Jesse, if I'm making fun of ANYONE it's myself, because I smoke just under a pack a day! Someone asked me recently how I could POSSIBLY justify it, knowing the health issues, and I sort of realized that it's my only actively self-destructive habit, for a person who's pretty much disgustingly stable otherwise, and I like it. Maybe I should just start getting tattoos, instead?

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 10 April 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

Tattoos are significantly less self-destructive, L.

i was kinda freaked out about an upcoming life change (moving), so i cut off a lot of my hair last night.

i think it's probably best not to cut your own hair really quickly without a mirror, while on sleep drugs, at an odd hour of morning. but it might look ok with some snipping to even it out. or i'll look charmingly disheveled until it grows a bit.

as self-destructive habits go, though, impulsive haircutting isn't that bad at all.

xp nutritionists are tremendously annoying.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Monday, 10 April 2006 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

I feel the (non-)criers (cryers?), but I have reasons. I have still not emotionally gotten over spending the night in jail for what still seems to me like a bad reason (and what that is, I would still not know). It doesn't help that everyone seems to be an expert on good-decision-making when you open yourself to tell this kind of story. Or that my dad just called as was being very melodramatic about how we never talk and how he doesn't know me anymore and what happened to the boy who used to like going to church and doing "nice" things. He had somehow forgotten that I called him two days ago, but of course all I told him then was about my new job and possibly poetry prize, so I guess he just wants to hear the bad things. Well, how about being arrested, Dad? Oh, that's all my fault and I'm a bad person and you've wasted all the money you've spent on my college and you don't know me anymore? Great! Goddammit, where is the shoulder I need!!!

I should metion that Hopewell and the etc etc were great. I normally don't like music I don't know until I get to know it. But Hopewell was pretty amazing. They proved that the heart of rock and roll is still beating in New York and Chicago.

Tonight I learned that my current favorite musical instrument is called the floor-tom. It's the big drum next to the kick-bass. I suddenly have a thing for drums. I really like that sound that is a military sort of rolling snare-heavy thing. And cymbals, lots of smashy cymbals.

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 05:52 (nineteen years ago)

Remember how we were talking about how not-sleeping has adverse effects on our behavior? And remember how I was being a giant brat yesterday? After I bit this girl's head off because she wanted to chat and I wanted to go home (my class was done and hers was just starting) I realized that I was sleeeeeepy and that was the source of my unrelenting grouchitude.

I mean, the girl I snapped at is (pardon me for saying this) really annoying, but I could have been more tactful instead of barking "I have a really really horrible headache and I don't feel like talking and I want to go home, see you later bye."

Anyway, I got plenty of sleep and feel better today. It's the new old me.

Funny comment from my Wills and Trusts professor:

It's a beautiful, sunny spring day and the time of year when young men and women's minds turn to thoughts of fiduciary duty of trustees.

This is my favorite so far.

It's very flattering for sure! Could I say that?!

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

Depends on whether "a sense of humor" means "really dry wit" or not.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

what's dry about considerable verve?

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, early heads up, I'll likely be playing a house show at my house at the end of the month with Casey D., whose CD is reviewed in P-fork today, and you all are invited, and many of you would dig her, I think.

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

Goddamn, this Ben Sherman shirt feels tight on me today. I need to drop a few, it's true. Polishing off that mac and cheese at 1 AM may not have been the best idea.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

Ben Sherman! Shirt! Good call. Not as trendy as it used to be, but still a killer quality shirt. I trust Ben Sherman with my shirting.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

Who's Ben Sherman?

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know. Renee bought it for me. That's the only reason why I have any idea who Ben Sherman is. I have no idea what the shirt's "reputation" is.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

I've seen Ben Sherman shirts for sale at the Virgin Megastore and Filene's Basement.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

I are a pig. Jeff is going to kick my ass.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

Jeff is going to kick your ass? Shouldn't you more realistically be worried about ME kicking your ass?

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

heheh Good fucking point.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

Jenny, of all the people that could (and often should) kick my ass, you are the one I'm most afraid of.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

Because, come on Kenan:

1. Jeff is a pacifist. I am not.
2. It's not part of Jeff's job as my husband to defend me against piggish comments from other men. He doesn't own my tits, I do, and this relationship is a partnership, not an ownership.*
3. You're about due for an asskicking anyway.

*I'd hope he'd have my back in a fight, though, although the only time that was tested he was too busy pulling me off a frat boy to save me from having my neck broken. Which I also deeply appreciate.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

xpost: Ha! Kenan, you're a peach.

Yeah, but us men, we do it anyway.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

Sometimes I'm not sure how to react in piggish-other-men situations. I don't want to be a macho asshole, but, uh, sometimes girls like to be defended?

I've got my DEEP TEEF CLEANING in an hour and a half, then I've got to go downtown right afterwards for a conference with customers. Fun fun.

Oh good God:

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

"How would I know about the White Sox?"

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, you two are right. I suppose if Jeff and I were out together and somebody talked shit to me, I would like it if Jeff said, "Hey, don't talk to women like that!" although odds are good that he wouldn't get the whole sentence out before I piped up with my own opinion on the matter. I would also be more likely to be vocal with my opinion with Jeff around because the likelihood of my facing physical consequences for speaking out against being harassed is much smaller with a dude around.

JORDAN OMG do you need novacaine for the deep cleaning? I have to get one of those next week. And the week after because she said there's no way she would do my whole mouth at once. And I'm skeered.

Anway, tell me how it went. Lie to me if you must.

John: Who is that dude? Clearly somebody who doesn't know many Cubs fans, one, and two, is trying to piss you off. Let it go. Unless you're itching for an internet fight, in which case, have at him. But know that you won't win - you can't win with someone whose sole goal is to irk you.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

My problem is that I knew that challenging him as I did would result in the same vitriolic condescension he's always directed at me -- I guess I still find it baffling that someone could dislike me so strongly.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

John: Who is that dude?

That is a man who is a MUCH bigger asshole than I could ever dream.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

And is he acting like discovering Fleetwood Mac is a good thing? If so, why?

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

Do you only know him on the internet?

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

He lives in Chicago, but refuses to meet any of us because he's way too cool for school.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

He's a piece of work, that guy.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

No novacaine, but dude advised me to take 600 milligrams of my favorite painkiller beforehand and another 400-600 after, and then some more the following day. "But it will be the GOOD kind of sore." I've got some Aleve ready to roll.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, leave off Fleetwood Mac, sucka! Stevie Nicks rules.

Also, if that guy is an asshole, and you only know him on the internet, what do you care if he doesn't like you? Why bother? Life is too short for getting into arguments on the internet about dumb shit with assholes that don't like you.

And it's okay if he doesn't want to meet us, as awesome as we are. Life is easier when you realize that not only will not everyone not like, odds are good that most people won't like you. Not because you're a bad person, just because people generally suck.

Positivism through xenophobia. It's the new wave.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

Let me try that again:

Life is easier when you realize that not only will everyone you encounter not like you, odds are good that most people you encounter won't like you.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

Jenny is right, but when someone is constantly poking you with a stick, internet or no, it's hard not to get pissy about it. And Stormy is constantly poking everyone with a stick.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry, sorry... but I am permanently soured against 95% of music on classic rock radio, and Fleetwood Mac is up there with Phil Collins in my book.

xpost And sometimes it's easier to pre-emptively not like people, although it can get you into a bit of a rut.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

-- jack cole (jack_col...), March 27th, 2005 9:57 PM. (jackcole) (link)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

the thing is, i'm not sure i can describe it exactly. he just kinda rubs me the wrong way: a certain brashness, perhaps? plus, he's specifically made fun of me a couple times for no good reason. for example, he started the "jaymc thinks he 'discovered' tara jane o'neil" business that indirectly led to the thread (now since deleted) where hstencil and i were at each other's throats in the middle of the night.
-- jaymc (jmcunnin...), March 27th, 2005 10:36 PM. (jaymc) (link)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

dude, wtf are you even talking about? why am i being dragged into this thread again?? someone please let me know! I have no idea wtf this Tara Jane O'Neil thing is you are talking about. you are weird dude. a creepy dude. you're always popping up on threads with like little nuggets of 'info' about various ILX people that you've gleaned from their posting. and that whole thing about spotting me at the michael mayer gig ... i dunno, weird. Yeah, I guess i snapped at you a couple times on maybe one or two threads .. but fuck it I snap at people all the time. And *everyone on ILX* snaps at other people *all the time*. so i really don't get this weird obsession you seem to have. Like, I really don't dig the fact that you've posted little snarky comments after things I post on ILM ... or follow me around and post links to ages old things I've posted elsewhere. Really fuckin creepy behavior dude. But basically i just ignore it, you know? And yeah, I don't know that we would really get along, primarily because your taste in music fucking SUCKS! BIG TIME! stop being a frickin follower-boy ILM hiveminder and get one taste for chrissakes. try listening to some records made before the year 2000 once in a while. jesus.

Let it be known that the "nuggest of 'info' about various ILX people" comment was made before the jaymc's database meme was started. Also: the fact that he remembers that I said something about recently getting into Fleetwood Mac makes him no different from me in this regard.

john, think of it this way:
you know how sometimes you just don't click with a person? maybe for no good reason? sometimes people just don't click with you. it's sucks, but it's okay, you know? you can't walk around trying to make everyone like you b/c not only does that sound exhausting, it's impossible.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

And he is a little bit Malkovich-y in a creepy way.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

Yes. I tried to think of a role where Malkovich is not creepy and couldn't.

Actually, he was pretty non-threatening when I saw him at O'Hare that one time. Saddlebag-wearing motherfucker.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, see, my immediate reaction to someone not liking me is "What am I doing wrong?"

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

you can't walk around trying to make everyone like you b/c not only does that sound exhausting, it's impossible.

Ooh but Kelsey, you're leaving out the good part, which is that, if you don't "click" for somene else, chances are good they don't click for you EITHER! In which case you either don't care so much about the clicking or perhaps even actively dislike them, so there's no reason to sweat it, really.

XP TO KELZ: YES, TOTALLY.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

I think perhaps being someone who most people like so much so that you are surprised when someone doesn't like you could be a reason in itself to not like someone. Know what I mean?

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but how would you know? You're a dick.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not trying to say "look at me, I'm so great and likeable" -- but I really don't have much experience with people so blatantly disliking me, at least not as an adult.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

at least not as an adult

This is key.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, see, my immediate reaction to someone not liking me is "What am I doing wrong?"

I tend to have this reaction when a guy is not interested in me romantically or sexually, but I've come to realize that it is not really about my attraction to him, but just that I want him to want me.

John, yes, people don't like you. People don't like me for some reason, and I'm great! It's life. It's okay. It's even more okay if the person who doesn't like you calls you weird and creepy and then insults your musical taste to back up his prediction that you wouldn't "click."

But seriously - let it go.

I AM NOT DISCUSSING JOHN'S PERSONALITY QUIRKS ON THE INTERNET.

AGAIN.

So, I want to take a class in Individual Employment Rights, which this school has historically offered. However, they aren't offering it next year. When I pointed out how badly this SUCKS for me, the dean suggested that if I found someone to teach the class, they would offer it.

Jenny, the same sort of thing happened to me once. They changed the semester a class was offered when I NEEDed it then if I was ever to graduate anytime resembling "on time" - which I still didn't do, but...

I got the usual prof to teach it as an independent study. I had to jump through lots of hoops but it worked in the end. Also, class only once a week instead of thrice!

I haven't seen her in six years, but she totally rules. She was a freshman when we were seniors and she was still kind of self-conscious about whether she fit in with the older crowd, etc., so people like me and Kelsey had to be like, "OMG what are you talking about, you're hilarious."

HAHA! Well, if the Dean thought it was bad when I sent him one resume, I wonder what he'll say when ten more people email him for information? I find it very heartening that there are so many employment attorneys in Chicago will to essentially train job competition. I also find it heartening that maybe now the damn school won't pull the "we can't offer this class, there's no one to teach it" bullshit again.

Now I wonder if I can get them to offer a worker's comp class...

JENNY: the cleaning wasn't that bad. Apparently it was a kinda deep cleaning, not deep deep, but they were nice enough to call it a normal cleaning because the deep version is different for insurance (i.e. costs 3x as much, my insurance only covers 80%, etc.). She used a thing that broke apart deposits on my teeth with SOUND WAVES. At one point it apparently sent some vibrations through my head and made a really bitchin' sound in my ear.

Pedicures - I love them. I think they are grand and I love having my feet attended to. Foot rubs are fantastico, and pedicures are like foot rubs that end with shiny polished toes! If the pedicure person is a recent immigrant, I get quite a bit of white imperialist-based guilt (Jadwiga! I'm watching more nature specials. This episode is about peculiar breeding habits. The male marsupial mouse, in early spring, goes into a hormonal frenzy in which he nails every female he can get his paws on, huntung them like prety and dragging them out of their nesting spots. It's a raging rape spree, basically. This goes on for a couple of weeks, non stop, during which time he does not eat or sleep. At the end of this time, he drops dead.

Spring is not always pretty.

So there's an old man in a nursing home, and one day he sadly says to the nurse, "My dick is dead." She smiles and politely comforts him and brings him some soup. The next day, the nurse sees the old man walking around with his dick hanging out of his pants. "What are you doing?!" she demands. He says, "I told you, my dick died. Today's the viewing."

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 03:02 (nineteen years ago)

All that rocking and rolling and boozing this weekend have taken a heavy toll on my emotions. I had terrible free-floating anxiety today that make work really really hard and gave me dreadful nap-mares.

I have a pervasive sense of something about to be wrong, going wrong, having gone wrong and just wrong with me.

I had a dream in which Kenan shot me in the stomach.

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 03:11 (nineteen years ago)

I did no such thing!

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 03:12 (nineteen years ago)

I feel like I should apologize anyway. Have I been the cause of anxiety somehow? I mean, apart from constantly fucking with you?

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 03:16 (nineteen years ago)

No. It's just broken nerves.

It was a bad night for a couple helpful Ecuadorian coworkers to keep trying to convince me that their hot cousins could help me not be gay.

They said things that the Latinos say all the time:

-women are the most beautiful thing in this world, how can you ignore that?
-men are UGLY, God made women beautiful and men ugly. Only effeminate men are handsome, but a real man is ugly. The cock is the ugliest organ on any person!
-when you're with another man, are you the man or the woman? (We're both men!) There is MAN, and there is WOMAN, which are you when you're with a man, you MUST CHOOSE!!

Then they told me that in the Ecuadorian army the men are isolated from women for 2 years and they do NOT fuck each other, but instead they have sex with goats and donkeys.

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 03:26 (nineteen years ago)

hahahaha

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 03:44 (nineteen years ago)

Why are you laughing at Ecuadorian sexuality?

What I love is that white folks at work say with authority: "Latinos fuck animals!" (The donkey thing is something that the Ecuadorians have said before.)

Wallace Shawn has these things?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:17 (nineteen years ago)

I am v susceptible to force of will/personality (as a counter-argument for unattractiveness) but that's the kind of thing you can only tell in person. Those photos? Not conveying it. Anyway, Woody Allen's whole schtick is based on total LACK of those qualities and I find him repulsive, esp in his movies which I almost can't watch.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:19 (nineteen years ago)

Money (movies pay a lot), power (very well-connected in literary/art/movie/Manhattan world), and status (top-shelf playwright; his translation of Threepennt Opera is opening on Broadway next month).

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

It'd be interesting to look through old Chicago threads and see if male self-loathing comes up on Wednesday in the way that panties and such come up on Fridays.

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:21 (nineteen years ago)

OH RLY.

I didn't know he was a playwright, good for him.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:21 (nineteen years ago)

I love Threepenny Opera! LOVE IT. I like the original Broadway cast with Lotte Lenya, Bea(trice) Arthur and Charlotte Rae. Does it need a new translation?

I also don't think men are any uglier than women. That ship has sunk -- there are plenty of ugly women out there to match the ugly men. It's just uncouth to talk about ugly women. Also, Lyle Lovett is cute in his own way!

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

The new Threepenny also features Alan Cumming, Cyndi Lauper and Nelly McKay.

Dear Kenan, Please email me some of those FF pix you took. Lovies, Sarah

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

Sarah, don't slum.

I'll mail you those pics tonight. I'm sorry I forgot yesterday.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

I should clarify 2 things. They were saying "el hombre es feyo," as in "the male is an ugly being." It's part of the dumb-fuck machismo thing--being tough and ugly. If you're ugly you are not objectified.

Also, what I was saying about whitey talking about fucking animals is that Americans say it without malice, but more as a fun fact about those crazy Mexicans. One gay guy uses their saying this as a way of pointing out how fucked up their homophobia is--that they consider it preferrable to fuck animals (or at least admit to fucking animals) than other men.

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

Lyle Lovett's ugliness is way offset by his awesomeness.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

It has nothing to do with individual men. It is a general rule:

God created Woman as the most beautiful tender thing on His planet and He created Man as the ugly tough thing that conquers and protects Woman.

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

Jesse, re: machismo and not being objectified -- I get that! Maybe I was too flip & not specific enough. Clearly it's a bad idea for men because it limits THEIR choices for maleness/masculinity, but it's equally bad for women blah blah "pedestal = bad" obviousness. Obviously. Sucky all 'round. Why did I even bother with this post?

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

That new Threepenny sounds PRETTY DAMN GOOD. But until you've heard Bea Arthur sing "Barbara Song" you don't know awesome. I don't speak German, and I'm sure the original lyrics are better, but the translation I know of that song is pretty damn good.

I used to believe in the days I was pure
And I was pure like you used to be
My wonderful someone will come to me someday and then it will all depend on me
If he's a fine man, if he's a rich man,
Wears a fine cravat, smokes a cigar
And if he's gallant and treats me like a lady then I shall tell him
Sorry

Chin up high keep your powder dry
Don't relax or go too far.
Look, the moon is gonna shine till dawn
Keep the little rowboat crusing on and on
You stay perpendicular
Oh, you can't just let a man walk over you
Cold and dignified is what you are
Such a whole lot of things can happen
So firmly say but sweetly
Sorry

One day comes a man
But what kind of a man
Do you know why he does what he does
He walked into my room and he hung up his hat
And I just didn't know where I was
He was a lean man, he was a mean man
He didn't own a cravat, smoked no cigar
And God knows he never made me feel a lady.
Just wasn't time for sorry
Chin up high my chin was down
My shoes and I relaxed, but far too far
Oh, the way the moon kept shining on
The night was nice for rowing and this girl was gone
Not so perpendicular
So you let a man just walk right over you
Who said dignified is what you are
Such a wonderful lot of terrible things did happen
And now it's you can tell me
Sorry

The bit about free range chickens was totally new information to me. They are not free range. They live the first five weeks of their seven week lives in a closed barn, and for the last two weeks a little door is opened that will allow them outside if they so choose. Few of them ever opt to go outside, since "outside" is a weird concept to them, which is fine with the farmers, because since the chickens aren't given antibiotics, they're afraid they'll catch their death of cold.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

i just read about that book on salon yesterday. i knew that there were language issues with what "free range" meant/means, but his book seems so much more investigated & good. i'll be looking to buy it shortly! maybe today . . . it's so sunny out, it'd be a great day to putter around outside reading by a lake.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, the way he frames the many problems with corn felt fresh to me. It is not primarily meat or tastless industrial veggies that are killing food -- it's high fructose corn syrup, a *highly* polluting crop that is in damn near everything, requires massive amounts of fossil fuel to grow, and is bad for farmers since all the fertilizing and overproduction makes corn totally unprofitable. And all it really does is make things a little sweeter. Things like bread.

it made me want to stop eating corn, and feel happy that i'm moving near a veggie co-op.

Oh yes. You have to sign up for the box-o-veggies a week. It feeds two in perfect amounts. Tell your roomie. I am available for procuring boxes of veggies on Saturday morning and delivering them. (Maybe even cooking them.)

Oh! One more thing from that interview that stuck in my brain. The reason that crappy food is cheap and good food is expensive is not because of a market force. It is not natural. It's because the government subsudizes crappy food and not good food.

i had these root beers from goose island and they were fucking transcendant compared to the root beer i usually bought. so, so good. so i thought, it must be the brewing process that makes it so good, and there must be good real ingredients rather than artificial flavors that give it a hint of vanilla-ey flavor...

...and on the label, it says "made with real sugar", and that seems to be the main difference from most sodas that are sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. (other than being microbrewed, of course)

Is there a way to tell Passover Coke apart from regular-ass Coke?

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

Dan -- was your sister able to stay vegetarian in Africa? If so, how?

No, not really. Then again, I know her vegetarianism is based more around food politics (resources used to produce animal-based food, primarily) rather than concern for cruelty to animals (though this is part of it, I'm sure - I only say that because I know she will and has eaten meat raised by someone she knows, or occasionally game meat, etc.)

I do know she avoided eating the more nasty of foodstuffs presented to her and her bf (rats, snails, various other things left out for who knows how long in 100 degree heat with attendant buzzing flies and such.) Also, they were careful to pack light (as in weight/space) foods like trail mix to have as back-up. She said she ate some of the best fruit she's ever had. I know that on at least one night some of their hosts slaughtered a chicken for their supper, and they ate that. I think it came down to not wanting to be rude and also realizing that vegetarianism through the eyes of your "typical" African is probably something to be viewed as "crazy." Stories from my two friends in the Peace Corps in the region (one of whom was a lifelong veg until he went to Benin) support this. It sounded like doing so was theoretically possible, though probably difficult.

Hope some of this made sense!

Something that just came to me:

On this trip, they were strictly on the cheap, trying to see as much as possible with the resources they had. It was pretty obvious that a traveller could easily (at least in Ghana) eat, drink, and shit (she has some great bathroom stories, too) in the restaurants and other businesses that cater to westerners and have no problem sticking to whatever food regimens they were into. It's all a matter of how much you want to pay, and what kind of experience you're looking to have.

you know it makes my heart sing
your love baby,
your love is a fine thing...

I like that song.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

It's so dead quiet in this office!

Same here, except for:

Pretending not to see his gun,
I said "let's go out and have some fun"
I know, you know, we believe in a land of love
I know, you know, we believe in a land of love

It keeps me sane.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

So would it be wrong of me to bring a shotgun to work one day even though I don't work in an office or US Post Office? Because I'm thinking that's the logical extension of this week's work-related idiocy. I am not sure of the protocols and etiquette of work-shoot-ups...

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

I took this morning off for a doctor's appointment and wondered why I can't just take every morning off. It'd make so much sense: I'd get errands done in the morning, maybe do some writing, and then roll in around 1 PM to work for the afternoon. I could probably get the same amount of work done, too.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

I think guideline #1 is "Don't post about it on the interweb in a traceable manner" (XP)

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

Work is occasionaly fine, but the past week has been infuriating unless I just turn off my brain and my emotions and slap a vacant beatific smile across my personality.

One cunt manager has decided to start saying, "Don't come to work with a sense of entitlement; it's the service industry and you take the good with the bad." She's totally bitter because the servers make double what she makes and she is stuck in management because she would be a shitty fucking server.

So last night when a server got upset because the jackass Eurotrash table changed her automatic gratuity from $50 to $1 she said, "Welcome to the service industry." The girl cried and then today got called on the carpet for "bringing down the staff" with her bad attitude. She was telling me about it and I was asked to not gossip.

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

And of course there is the "flooding of the floor" as management decides that we need 9 servers on when we could very easily do with 7. Then they realize they fucked up and cut like crazy so the remaining servers are hopelessly in the weeds. Then they say, "See, we should have gone with 9"!!!

I've seen Office Space, and I've heard Jenny and Jeff's stories, so I would imagine that all work is hell?

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

I believe our good friend A. Bourdain said it best when he said this about the restaurant industry: "Suck it up."

Not to belittle anyone's position as a server, cook, dishwasher, manager (okay, screw the managers, especially the cnt you refer to) or anything, but that really does sum it up. Shit happens, all the time. Deal with it, or find other work.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

jackass Eurotrash table changed her automatic gratuity from $50 to $1

How?

I would imagine that all work is hell?

I think all work is hell sometimes, and if you're lucky it's less often than not.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

Hell is other people. Work is a situation where you are forced to be with people not of your choosing. So yes.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

jackass Eurotrash table changed her automatic gratuity from $50 to $1

How?

The leader of the pack of haughty fucks scratched out the "$50" and replaced it with "$1". Management would not back up the server b/c "It's a gratuity, not something you're entitled to." Which is wrong in so many ways. I tend to believe a person is entitled to the wages he or she earns! Be they tips or hourly wages.

Anthony Bourdin is a self-important blowhard asshole. In his book he showed a lot of contempt for the front of house side of restaurants, particularly waiters. And on the reality show The Restaurant he was dining with another chef and going on and on, saying "Chefs are a rare breed of madmen, visionaries, and artists all rolled into one."

(that was paraphrased, but the madmen, visionaries and artists part is verbatim)

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

Isn't the point of automatic/included gratuities because the server IS entitled to it?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

Anthony Bourdin is a self-important blowhard asshole.

Hey, he's a writer!

I'm sorry Jesse, I didn't mean to offend. But man, I can't sympathize with having to deal with shitty customers. That's why I never waited tables, even though I could have made 3 times as much money doing so. I would probably have killed several dozen people and not gotten to enjoy the fruits of my labor. I can't understand why anyone does it, to be perfectly honest.

My best friends on the restaurant crew and I came up with a plan: get a law passed stating that anyone who wishes to eat at a sit-down restaurant must work for at least 6 (six) months in a sit-down restaurant, in any capactity, before being allowed the privelage of dining out. I think this was ginned up after work and many beers. Most of our best ideas were. Hooray for restaurant-fascism.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

YES!!!

But I really believe it's about managers feeling like they're getting the shit end of the stick b/c they work way way longer hours for way way way less pay.

The problem here is not with the managers, but with the partners in a $15 million dollar a year restaurant that can't pay its managers a decent wage and can't provide any benefits for any employees. ("Benefits" in the handbook include: flexible schedules, discounted meals (but you can't take any of the food home--if you ca't eat it all, you throw it away), open-door policy.)

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

That's just horrible. None of the places where I've waited tables had a "group of 6 or more" policy and it was horrible when a group of middle-aged ladies would come in for lunch, all want separate checks and all tip me $1. Where's your worker's rights advocate?

I have THE WORST song stuck in my head:
"Love Touch" by Rod Stewart. Vile.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, $15 million? I think maybe those "can't"s should be replaced with "won't"s. Even the small-scale (though still busiest-in-town) place I worked provided some healthcare and retirement benefits to full-time employees. (OK, none of them were servers.)

xpost: I agree about the tippers. That kind of thing happened all too frequently to the servers where I worked. Of course, there were also the nights where c-notes would be dropped... yin/yang, give/take, etc etc etc

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

Believe me, hang around a bitchy waiter who feels slighted (like I am currently)for 5 minutes and you are certain to hear this idea come up.

I'm not offended.

I wait tables because there's really not anything I'd rather be doing that at which I could make as much money with as much freedom. As I've said many times before, I'm dead on the inside and I have no passions to pursue, so this is what I do.

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno. I think the chef had him snuffed.

One small good move the mgt. made was to allow us to grat. parties of 5 or more. We would have groups of 5 foreign diners who would spend extravagant amounts of money on food and booze, but not on the tip. (They certainly knew all about California wines and the differences in American oysters, but somehow they forgot to educate themselves on how to tip....)

Ugh. I'm sorry. I'm winding down. I'VE GOT THE SHITS!!!

The bat did a pretty slick flip-move so as not to pee on itself, I wonder if sloths are capable of the same.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

I have heard that sloths stink. It's pretty gross that some are covered in algae.

But I love them all the same.

I did too, and then someone's custom ring tone sounded just like it and the whole thing came rushing back. Daryl Hannah playing with fire, the drums, Rod's revolting hair.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

Jesse, I think protocol on shotguns is similar to comped meals, i.e. just as long as you throw them in the dumpster before leaving the massacre. I completely feel you, by the way, as it has only been a year and a half since restaurants were not my main source of income. And I frequently worked as a busser, which is a whole other side to the equation. I understand servers dicking bad bussers, but I consistently busted my ass to have it absolutely not matter to some servers. Whereas other people would just make a big show of any little effort they did and get rewarded. I understand this is just life blah blah, but it didn't keep me from being pissed at the time.

HA HA! (LOL)

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

Ugh. It takes me entirely too long to get home. Getting out of the loop takes half my travel time. Getting caught at every light, fearing for my life and moving slowly, etc. Once I turn onto Milwaukee, it's a lot faster, but Milwaukee is a narrow, poorly maintained street. I'm not really comfortable until I turn onto Augusta, six blocks from home. So I get six blocks of pure riding pleasure, and two miles of white-knuckled terror and frustration. Mornings are better.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

Also, does it bug any other bike riders when you see other riders break every traffic rule in the book, cruise through red lights, weave in and out of traffic, and basically dare people to hit them? I don't know if I'm angry at their making careful riders look bad or envious of their chutzpah.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

I am envious of their chutzpah and not angry. You need balls to ride in the city and I don't have quite the balls the folks in question have.

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

As your attorney, I'd advise against it. But I'll put you in touch with a union if you want some organizational support.

Maybe you could take a labor leadership class through the WRC... I'd totally go to that with you.

No Lollapapapasldkfjossa here. There are a lot of bands I'd like to see, but it's just too big.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 22:11 (nineteen years ago)

Hey Jenny. The people at work bitch and wish there was something they could do, but mention a union and they suddenly know of a restaurant where some waiter who sat down at with guests at his table and did coke off his crumber but couldn't get fired because of the union. The older waiters say things like, "Nooooo. We don't need a union; what we need is for management to get their heads out of their asses and for the partners to attend to their employees needs." Then I have to look at a picture of a sloth to calm my nerves.

John, I'm going to Lolla if you are. It's been a while since I've been at a big-ass festival. I think Oz-Fest was the last one. Keep me up to date on your decision.

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 22:15 (nineteen years ago)

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

She's really in the Prince mold in her own way.

I don't know about that. Prince is fun and funny. She's dead fucking serious about this sex stuff.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 22:53 (nineteen years ago)

I think of her as Prince-like as far as throwing in these taboo lines in an offhanded, natural way - and as far as her success at both dancable pop and ballads.

I'm doing some work at a coffeehouse in Evanston, and someone else's iTunes shows up under 'Shared Music' - let's see...there's 311, 3 Doors Down, Chevelle, A Perfect Circle, Alkaline Trio, Audioslave...

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 22:57 (nineteen years ago)

1) I am tired.
2) I have had a shitty day.
3) I am willing to take it out on others.
4) My awareness of all these facts is slipping away from me rapidly.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 00:22 (nineteen years ago)

It's ok. I have started making a springtime happy mix for no one in particular. You know, I never end up burning these "just to cheer myself up" mixes and giving them to anyone, but I think sometimes that they're my finest (if most guileless) moments.

So far:

1) Van Morrison - Wild Night
2) Curtis Mayfield - Move On Up (full version)

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 00:25 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe when you get done with that, if you're still feeling on edge, you can try to find me a nice, sane roommate. Seriously, if anyone knows someone who's looking and doesn't mind/wants to be living in the Wicker Park/East Village area, let me/them know.

I wrote an almost-surprisingly well written, organized, thought out, and rational email to my parents tonight. Hopefully, they don't misinterpret something and make that the focus of why we should still be mad at each other. Ah, parentals!

regular roundups (Dave M), Thursday, 13 April 2006 00:35 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder what's happening in my hood. I was walking from the train and looked down the alley toward the carwash and saw 3 cop cars, which were joined by 2 more that did TV-worthy moves. Then 4 black guys in an older car drove by slowly and rolled the window down (I was standing around rubbernecking). One dude said something to me and gave me a thumbs up with an enquiring look on his face. I nodded yes. They edged toward the alley and stopped.

On Magnolia I noticed the cars had block Gunnison and cars were backing away from that street.

Now there are CPD cars trolling Argyle.

Your marketing skills lack. No mention or "rock" or "awesome" or "good" or anything. Repetition of the word "art" does not a persuasive flyer make.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Thursday, 13 April 2006 13:39 (nineteen years ago)

Ok, so, I've tried, I really have, but I can't not love the newest Rolling Stones album. I ignored it for months, I was repulsed by the fact that Rolling Stone magazine gave it a messy handjob all last year, but I can't get around the fact that it's really good. I'm sorry.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 13:39 (nineteen years ago)

Alfred Soto likes it.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, hippies, this summer M. and I are going to do the hippiest thing we've ever done -- bartering our homebrewed beer for friends' homegrown veggies and herbs! I might as well start wearing sandals.

You know, bartering and growing stuff isn't necessarily hippy, it just makes sense! It is smart and resource-friendly! No need for the taint of sandals; making-do/DIY is plenty punk rawk.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 13 April 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

"like that one dude" = your reputation preceeds you

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Laurel is right. Don't break out the Tivas just yet. Just enjoy the fresh food and good beer. No hippy.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

"No hippy" is roughly equivalent to "no homo," BTW.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, look, you're cutting out The Man, man. Screwing the system. Bringing production back to the people.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 13 April 2006 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

Now, if you start going around telling everyone that it's the best thing ever to do, and they really have to do it, too, and if you don't do it your way you're ruining the planet and killing animals and anyone who doesn't barter for vegetables might as well just buy a Hummer and vote Republican, well... THEN you're a hippy.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

We're doing two more batches this weekend (pale ale and a chocolate stout), and I will definitely bring some the next time I come down to Chicago (or perhaps at the next Madison rock show).

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

Huh. Okay. I've seen sandals like that, but I've never known the name of the brand or anything. I guess I don't really pay attention to clothing brands (viz. Ben Sherman discussion from Tuesday).

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

I got a pair of Tevas like 10 years ago. I think they're out at our camp somewhere. They're really useful when canoeing/kayaking. For just wearing around they're pretty crappy. Not to mention hideous.

It really does become obvious who paid what to get a spot on Launchcast radio. Gorillaz, like I said, and Blur as well (I sense a connection), and Jane's Addiction are huge whores for their 2003 album which is a lump of dog poo that's started to turn white.

I need something else to listen to.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Thursday, 13 April 2006 15:17 (nineteen years ago)

Here, sinners are blown around endlessly by the unforgiving winds of unquenchable desire as punishment for their transgressions.

Circle Eight: If the Seventh Circle offended your sensibilities, the Eighth is simply baffling. In the next worst circle of Hell, the sufferings of the damned would be inflicted on those who have committed the following sins (all of which are deemed more evil than murder and warmongering). In order of increasing severity: Pandering, flattery, hypocrisy, fortune telling, theft, giving bad advice, instigating trouble, alchemy, impersonation, counterfeiting, lying, and being a giant.

Roffle.

I haven't seen him in two weeks, and his family refuses to come pick his things up. I have just finished putting them in the back alley, I don't want any of it! x-box with games
Simpsons DVD boxsets and other DVDs
Pornography magazines (something called "Butt-man") and DVDs
Korg keyboard (I think this was expensive)
Case of Knob Creek Bourbon
Weight bench and weights
non-working 32" color TV
George Foreman sandwich maker
A lot of assorted clothes
CDs "alternative rock" "phish"
electric guitar (don't know brand) and amp

hyde park records (colonel), Thursday, 13 April 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

xp - I mean, not if it's like $60, but it's sort of that one thing I've always tried (unsuccessfully) to find. Why...do you have it?

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 13 April 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

Ha! My gf's ex-house was the other directon, though.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 13 April 2006 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

i liked that it had something that would appeal to everyone thereby attracting a wide cross-section of scavengers. did people come by looking for stuff?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

You're talking about the Fraser/Hurley vehicle from 2000? You're looking at $13 (that's our cost).

otto midnight: what's "cstb"?

hyde park records (colonel), Thursday, 13 April 2006 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

No! The 1967 original, with Dudley Moore!

it's written by a mutual myspace friend. you're on his top 8. he was the dude that sent me an invitation to myspace.

Here's some angry emails from Craig regarding that:

A LOT of people came by, sometimes the alley was full.

hyde park records (colonel), Thursday, 13 April 2006 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

awesome! and yes.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

Derek Erdman, are you from Kent, OH?

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 13 April 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

You really should try to stop by. There's going to 4 buckets of rib tips from Ribs & Bibs. Unless you're vegetarian, in which case they'll be soy ribs (as far as you know).

I like CSTB, I hope I didn't make a mistake by typing that out.

hyde park records (colonel), Thursday, 13 April 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

I went to school in Kent, lived there from 92-96.

I'm more from Cleveland.

hyde park records (colonel), Thursday, 13 April 2006 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

Mmm, unfortch no. This is a conversation best had in person, since I don't want to incriminate myself or anyone else. But I bet we know some of the same people. So you don't have the original Bedazzled soundtrack, do you? Because that's the one I want!

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 13 April 2006 17:55 (nineteen years ago)

i just put the interpreter on my netflix queue, not because i expect such entertaining dialogue as the link, but because it seems like a moderately entertaining fluffy thriller.

This is exactly what it is, Julia. I don't remember it well (saw the 9:30 show at the Village on a rainy night), but liked it while I was watching it.

Hi, Derek. I'm Sarah. I think you once emailed with my bf, Nick, a couple of years ago about maybe playing in a band together? Or something along those lines?

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Thursday, 13 April 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

Holy wow, a sealed copy of the LP went for $202. We don't have it, but I'll keep my eye out now that I know.

hyde park records (colonel), Thursday, 13 April 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

Sarah Madkitten McLusky: I remember. I wanted to play drums, they're fun.

hyde park records (colonel), Thursday, 13 April 2006 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

I feel like I've told Derek this already, but I have a painting of his above my bookshelf in my living room.

And since Dave hangs out at Hyde Park Records all the time, Derek is secretly the CENTER OF THE CHILX UNIVERSE.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

Haha... where was I for that prank? That's my alley!

jonviachicago (jonviachicago), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:00 (nineteen years ago)

You really should try to stop by.

i really don't think i'll be able to but if i can get a couple of drinks in my ex maybe i can convince her that we're going to an art gallery. with kegs. i'd say it's about 80% that i won't be there, although i could slip out and go up there since it's only a few blocks north of me.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:00 (nineteen years ago)

Derek, Do you not play drums anyway? Do you still paint?

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

I hope someone took pix of the people that showed up to look through trash.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

I remember you said you had a painting, I was hoping to see/meet you again at this year's WLUW RF. Alas, no...at least I don't think.

hyde park records (colonel), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

i figured that was the point until i read the april fools thing.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

I do play drums, yes. I also still paint.

I have some pictures & video of people in the alley. I opened my garage door and mingled with them a bit too. I kept looking in garbage cans. It was really hard not to giggle.

jonviachicago: it's right behind my house, where do you live?

hyde park records (colonel), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

3. My best plan just graduated from nursing school. What's a good gift to send her?

the correct answer is always booze.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

It's actually a four flat right on the corner. I've only lived there a year (and actually moving again very soon), two of the apartments recently got new tenant I haven't met yet. A really nice couple lives above me.

jonviachicago (jonviachicago), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

Hi Derek. I live in Madison, not Chicago, but I like (and play) drums too.

http://www.spacetimetanks.com/

hyde park records (colonel), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

Normally, I would agree but she's a single mother of a 2-year-old daughter living with her fundie, no-booze-allowed parents in OK and she would not only have to hide the gift, she'd also have to sneak away to use it. It needs to be something she can open in front of her family without creating a crisis.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

Agree with the booze - xp.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

Your best PLAN? PLAN, Jenny?

I also live off Leavitt, but on Crystal.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

Oh my god, I did type "best plan."

That's fucked up!!!!!!

Note - Jeff would love the space-time tank thing.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

ok, by a show of hands, how many of us can count leavitt as the closest north/south street?

*raises hand*

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

My gf lives on Leavitt.

(sorry, that hasn't gotten old yet)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

My favorite Chicago plans post on this board.

I am not raising my hand.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

I am not John's gf.

Eazy (Eazy), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

It's ok, John! Live a little!

Can anyone recommend any fun record stores or something of that ilk in Champaign?

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

Or, you know, maybe I am raising my hand. You don't know, because you can't see me. But the closest NS street to me is not Leavitt. It's CLARK. Booyah.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

No. Glenwood.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

My N-S street is PAULINA.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not raising my hand either. Even before I moved away from Belden, there were closer north/south streets than Leavitt.

Do you guys on/around Leavitt ever go to Rich's? I spent way too much time there back about a year ago.

jesus what an xpost

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

Foster bus street name association game:

Paulina - vagina
Leavitt - Yes 90210

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

*Raises hand*

Champaign record stores? There's not much left judging by my last trip down there. Nothing compared to the mid-90s peak of like 4 shops on the same block of Green St. Anyway, definitely check out Record Service on Green one block west of the Union (quad) and Record Swap over in Urbana (I'd have to look up the address).

jonviachicago (jonviachicago), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

Do I live the farthest west? The nearest North/South street to me is Albany.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

Yep, otto. We were just at that little park shooting b-ball the other day.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

I think I live the furthest east -- 2 blocks from da lake.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

i played b-ball everyday from the time i was 11 or 12 until i was 19. the last time i played a comptetitive game i was about 23 and got my lunch handed to me by a 16 year old behemoth in york beach, maine. the cigarette smoking was rearing it's ugly head.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

Leavitt - Yes 90210

?

My brother and I once thought it would be fun to give all the major streets in Chicago code-names, like Foster would be "Bananas" and Lawrence would be "D.H." -- but this lasted about two minutes.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

Why would you know about Yes 90210?

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

There was a song called "Leave It" -- was that by Yes?

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

Yes! But I have the album name wrong... hold please.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

I am not at peak performance on ILX today. Forgive me.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

the album title was the record company catalog number.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

Ha! I liked that song.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

I'm guessing that Golf Bravo X-Ray may live farther west than me.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

I liked that whole entire album, god help me.

There's a little fact for your catalog John: I am a fan of YES.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

I think Laurel lives furthest east.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

Good luck dude.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

gbx (skowly), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

At least we're not ranking where we live east to west, or north to south. I don't like putting out lots of stats on here.

Eazy (Eazy), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, let's talk about Yes. Fragile is my very favorite Yes album.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

(xp) It would give the serial killers a handy map, though.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

MUSIC TRIVIA TIME:

90215 was Yes's 11th album and also their best-selling. What other rock act experienced their greatest commercial success with their 11th album?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

(xp) It would give the serial killers a handy map, though.

too bad there's not a bus that goes down leavitt.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

I like "Heart of the Sunrise" and the intro to "Changes" and the searing momentum of "It Can Happen".

xpost - I'm going to guess Rush, just because Yes and Rush always go together in my mind.

Eazy (Eazy), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

David Bowie?

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

I give up.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

John and Sarah, since you're both in a band, isn't it inspiring to know that your 11th record might be the greatest commercial success?

Eazy (Eazy), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:45 (nineteen years ago)

Steely Dan

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

Aerosmith

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

Yes and Rush always go together in my mind.

It's a prog-rock-o-rama!

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

Also - Rush's has an album named after a number, too: 2112

WE ARE THE PRIESTS OF THE TEMPLE OF... something.... YEAH

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

syrinx

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

No to both Rush and Bowie, although both are very good guesses.

Moving Pictures was Rush's 8th album. Let's Dance and Tonight (I can't tell which sold more: both were Bowie's only platinum-selling studio albums) were his 15th and 16th.

For all I know, there could be a dozen bands that this is true of. But I'll give you a clue for the one I'm thinking of: the 11th album came out in 2002.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

Aerosmith

that is patently rediculous.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know how many albums Aerosmith released, but I was trying to think of an older band that sold out to the adult contemporary markets and then sold a ton of records as a result.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:52 (nineteen years ago)

The Eagles

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

Weirdly, Aerosmith is NOT WRONG -- their biggest seller was 1993's Get a Grip, their 11th album.

But not the one I was thinking of.

Steely Dan has only recorded 9 studio albums.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know how many albums Aerosmith released, but I was trying to think of an older band that sold out to the adult contemporary markets and then sold a ton of records as a result.

actually, yeah it's sales not quality of songs. GREAT GUESS, I WAS WRONG!!!

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, that.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

Eagles = only 6 studio albums

(I'm not including Greatest Hits or other comps.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

2002, people.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

U2?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

Bon Jovi

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

Oooo U2 seems like a good guess.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

Can we have a genre clue? Like are we way off with the classic rock type guesses?

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

Nah, the most recent U2 was their 11th, but it hasn't yet eclipsed Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby in sales.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

i can't think of bands that put out that many records. not exactly my milieu.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, you're off with the classic rock guesses. Try something a bit ... indier.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:59 (nineteen years ago)

I wanted to say Sonic Youth, but I'm pretty sure that's wrong.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:59 (nineteen years ago)

bevis frond?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

Yoshimi was number 10, right? I thought about Sonic Youth too, but was doubting.

jonviachicago (jonviachicago), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:01 (nineteen years ago)

No one has ever purchased a Bevis Frond record. Fact.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

i own two.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

You lie.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

Owning /= buying.

jonviachicago (jonviachicago), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

Sonic Youth isn't a bad guess. The problem at this point, though, is that I don't have access to sales figures for anything that's sold less than 500,000. But I'm pretty sure SY's best-selling record is Dirty, which was their 9th.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

i have purchased two.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

no lie.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

jonviachicago = WINNER

Actually, you may be right about Yoshimi being their 10th. I was counting their 1984 self-titled EP, but that's prob. up for debate.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

i liked flaming lips better when they were drug-damaged art punks instead of the MOR band they became. way to play it safe, wayne.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

All right, that was a waste of time.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, that three-disc set with the EP, first three albums, and bonus stuff is pretty unfuckwithable.

jonviachicago (jonviachicago), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

Congratulations, jonviachicago! You have won my undying respect.

I think that was fun, not a waste. And Otto, I'm with you re: the drug-damaged art punks phase. Priest Driven Ambulance is me favorite.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

All right, that was a waste of time.

which is so unlike anything else we do on these threads.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

So Yoshimi outsold Clouds Taste Metallic? Interesting, since the earlier one had a straight-up top-40 hit a la "Loser".

Not a waste of time, especially with that Aerosmith trivia added in. (I was sure Sarah got it right with Bowie.)

Eazy (Eazy), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

Priest Driven Ambulance is me favorite.

mine too. i saw them in 1988 opening for jane's addiciton at fitchburg state college in loverly fitchburg, ma. that whole night was weird.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

clouds taste metallic probably didn't sell as many as transmissions from the satellite heart i'd imagine.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

"Do You Realize" was (relatively for an "alt-rock" band) huge on mainstream radio. I mean, my mom knew the song.

jonviachicago (jonviachicago), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

So Yoshimi outsold Clouds Taste Metallic? Interesting, since the earlier one had a straight-up top-40 hit a la "Loser".

Actually, "She Don't Use Jelly" was on Transmissions From the Satellite Heart. But I think most people treated it as a novelty song and didn't actually buy the record. As for Yoshimi, you have to consider that by 2002, they were pimping themselves out all over the place -- they played on Leno, Wayne Coyne was in that HP (?) commercial, etc.

(Otto OTM about TFTSH selling more than CTM, though.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

I've been meaning to buy/listen to all of Soft Bulletin for years.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

i remember in 2000 when me and my girlfriend were in vegas we made a trip to gamble at the barbery coast casino solely because we both dug that song.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

I like Soft Bulletin, but I've been too annoyed by my bandmates' worship of it (Matt, EL, and Colin all LOOOOOOVE it) to actually listen to it ever in the last five years.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

No one has spoken to me or asked me about anything for hours. It's dead quiet in here. If not for you guys, I would start to get a little spooked.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, I just spent this time crafting a post that says pretty much what John, Jon, and Kevin just said.

In lieu, I will rank FL records, favorite to least favorite:

Priest Driven Ambulance
Hit to Death in the Future Head
Clouds Taste Metallic
Transmissions
Yoshimi
Soft Bulletin
Hear it Is/Oh My Gawd!!!/Telepathic Surgery

I can't rank Zakeriakakaksa because while I own it, I've never listened to it.

I did go see the Boombox Experiement in Philadelphia. Pretty fun.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

I still have never heard Zaireeka, just because I want to hear the real thing and not one of those mixdowns or anything. Made plans to go to two different listening parties, but both fell through for various reasons.

jonviachicago (jonviachicago), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

Kevin, that's awesome. I made a side trip to OKC while driving from Boca Raton, FL to Colorado just so I could say I visited the home of the Flaming Lips.

Halloween on the Barbary Coast is awesome. Felt Good to Burn might be my favorite from that record, even though it brings back some rather distressing memories.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

Also, I think if they can track down and properly medicate Ronald Jones, the Flaming Lips would be better.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

I still have never heard Zaireeka, just because I want to hear the real thing and not one of those mixdowns or anything.

i set up four workstations in a circle around me to listen to it. you're not missing much.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I've done the Zaireeka thing, too. Meh.

Although I haven't done it stoned...

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

Is it lame to go to a steakhouse and not order a steak? I'm going out after work for a friend's birthday, but for whatever reason I'm not a big steak guy. I know, I'm a horrible carnivore.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

Get a bloomin' onion.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think it's that kind of steakhouse.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

They have fish and steak sandwiches though.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

ick, one or the other please.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

HI CHICAGO

i'm busy. does anyone know where i should go to get my taxes done? i'm clearly going to have to get an extension but i neeeeed a good accountant and Jenny tells me to avoid H&R Block. HELP ME NOW.

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

I'll ask around for a recommendation as long as you avoid any place that offers "rapid refund" or "check cashing" since they prey on and exploit poor people.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

ick, one or the other please.

Haha, that's what I meant. Fish, without steak or bread.........and also......steak sandwiches.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

I have been known not to order steak at steakhouses.

Man, I could go for all sorts of bad stuff right now. Ooh! I know the perfect thing! I want mint chocolate chip ice cream!

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

I AM BIKING TO WHITE CASTLE

gbx (skowly), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

i had sausage pizza at lunch and i'm absolutely starving again. i want some hummus and mini pitas. last night i made grilled cheese sandwiches and ore ida french fries. turns out i didn't have any ketchup so i dipped the fries in hummus. there's nothing that doesn't taste better with hummus.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

Hummus fries! OMG.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

i'm telling you it was fantastic. lawry's seasoned salt instead of regular and some mediterranean hummus. mmmmmmmm.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

That sounds delicious indeed.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

YUM.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Thursday, 13 April 2006 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

For your amusement, "the 19-year-old":

http://www.snponline.com/PHOTOS_OF_WEEK/POW9-17/images/wo%20marisa%20holmes%209-17-03k.jpg

(Sort of a weird photo. She was prettier in person.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

Never forget, 19-year-old

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 13 April 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

haha

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

Ducked out a little early. In honor of Mr. Erdm4n's appearance, I am listening to Kathy McGinty again. It's so genius. You know, her muff has tusks.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 20:50 (nineteen years ago)

For all the pervert hilarity, my favorite bit is the one where the guy figures it out, and just starts laughing his ass off and admiring the genius of it. I like that guy.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

Nice C4n4st4 review in PopMatters today.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

Very cool! They like you!

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

Oddly, they seem to like you much more than a 6.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I know, that's kinda weird.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 April 2006 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

You have all abandoned me late in the day, and I am sad. I think I will go patronize the Steely Dan thread.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

Who in this bitch likes peeps?

Jeff. (Jeff), Thursday, 13 April 2006 22:46 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure I've told the story before of Easter 1992, where I ate a lot of Peeps, took a couple bong hits, and puked pink marshmallow out of a car window. I will never eat a peep again.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 22:55 (nineteen years ago)

Stop being a bitch and peep me up!

Jeff. (Jeff), Thursday, 13 April 2006 23:07 (nineteen years ago)

You stop being a bitch, bitch! I will vomit pink on you.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

Peeps are dope

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 13 April 2006 23:15 (nineteen years ago)

This goes out to my Chicago peeps, especially Jesse. (Perhaps not best for work.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 13 April 2006 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

In the morning!

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 23:25 (nineteen years ago)

Why hasn't that become a stadium staple?

Jeff. (Jeff), Thursday, 13 April 2006 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

Baffling.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Thursday, 13 April 2006 23:33 (nineteen years ago)

gbx (skowly), Thursday, 13 April 2006 23:33 (nineteen years ago)

That song will never feel out of date.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 13 April 2006 23:35 (nineteen years ago)

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 14 April 2006 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

oh, ok.

gbx (skowly), Friday, 14 April 2006 00:23 (nineteen years ago)

SEX! Over the PHONE!

That was... absurd.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Friday, 14 April 2006 01:35 (nineteen years ago)

One of the bands that's opening for Wilderness on Sunday looks really interesting:

http://www.partsandlabor.net/

This makes me happy.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Friday, 14 April 2006 01:50 (nineteen years ago)

Also, they played at Quenchers in 2002?

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Friday, 14 April 2006 01:53 (nineteen years ago)

that was probably him! i think that's his car desc., anyway.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Friday, 14 April 2006 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

Hi board. I'm just getting back in touch after a day of hard work.

John, Stop throwing your twee new love in our faces!
Ha ha, j/k. I'm in love too. Tra la la. Springtime love...

Hey! Maybe you guys should go on a double date! To hell!

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Friday, 14 April 2006 02:22 (nineteen years ago)

OTM

gbx (skowly), Friday, 14 April 2006 02:27 (nineteen years ago)

dying

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Friday, 14 April 2006 02:37 (nineteen years ago)

Oh you guys... 'm just kidding.... About the date part.

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Friday, 14 April 2006 02:42 (nineteen years ago)

Oh my god, I did type "best plan."

That's fucked up!!!!!!

What does that mean? Is that a euphamism? Patrix talks about dudes he means to sleep with as "plans."

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Friday, 14 April 2006 02:43 (nineteen years ago)

DOES JAYMC OWN A MAROON LATE-MODEL FORD TAURUS THAT HE JUST DROVE THROUGH THE LEAVITT AND ARMITAGE INTERSECTION? CUZ I BIKED RIGHT BY YOU, DUDE.

He has a Mercury something. And it is maroon.

Mercury:Ford::6:1/2 dozen.

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Friday, 14 April 2006 02:45 (nineteen years ago)

shh!

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Friday, 14 April 2006 02:52 (nineteen years ago)

What are you people doing? There's a cool STORM AT SUNDOWN shaping up.

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Friday, 14 April 2006 02:53 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i just shut my windows right quick. it got real ugly real fast.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Friday, 14 April 2006 02:55 (nineteen years ago)

I just drove home from Lake Forest - amaaaazing lightning all across the western sky, beautiful behind the big under-construction buildings along hwy 41. Had to call the roommates and ask them to close my bedroom windows in case the storm hit before I got home.

Eazy (Eazy), Friday, 14 April 2006 03:01 (nineteen years ago)

It's coming and going here. I fear for the large part of my bay window. I kind of wish it would just blow in so I could get it replaced. The new windows are in the basement but the maint. guy is a twat. And an idiot too!

Kenan, what are you doing? Where is everyone? I tried to call you, but it was busy. :(

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Friday, 14 April 2006 03:03 (nineteen years ago)

Derek, you are funny. And weird. And cheap. Seriously, someone is gonna see Band of Horses at the Pitchfork festival and flip their shit when they see the CD used at HPR for like $6 because you totally could've gotten like $10 out of them. I am totally going to that party, by the way. Will I see any of you there?

is pretty unfuckwithable.

This is such a good word. Cee-Lo got me hooked.

The Knife CD is pretty good. I really like the "I need your music," "Forest something" song. Track 9.

That Parts & Labor website is hard to look at.

Finally, I am seriously psyched about the Pitchfork festival now. They are announcing a HUGE, AMAZING band tomorrow that I'll be really interested to hear your opinions on. Seriously, I went from "okay, some bands I like but it seems like a lot of possibly mediocre typical indie-ish stuff" to "Fuck! Awesome."

regular roundups (Dave M), Friday, 14 April 2006 03:03 (nineteen years ago)

Art Brut is good, though.

Also, if this storm at all clears up and I get the call, I am going to get drunk with people from the coffee shop I used to work at, which includes a current "plan."

regular roundups (Dave M), Friday, 14 April 2006 03:04 (nineteen years ago)

I was talking to a girl.

Yeah, the lightning just lit up my whole apartment for a second, in that weird way where suddenly everything it's noon at midnight and your brain goes "WHAAAAA?" until it readjusts.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Friday, 14 April 2006 03:05 (nineteen years ago)

Also, I increased my article-writing efficiency by 2 times today. 4 articles instead of 2 like on Tuesday (although I guess it has that name for a reason).

And Evan, you are awesome for biking to White Castle.

My current roommate (Charles, some of you may remember) is going to sell his Raleigh to me for $20. It will need new tires and a lock, but I think it will be a nice thing to have. If all you organic-fruit buying, bretzel-eating, natural-living bicycle riders hadn't talked so much shop recently, I probably wouldn't have even considered it. Now I feel like I'm missing out on something.

Sorry for so many posts. I'm doing my catching up for the day.

regular roundups (Dave M), Friday, 14 April 2006 03:08 (nineteen years ago)

Whoa!

That's a "plan-to-avoid."

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot (unclejessjess), Friday, 14 April 2006 03:13 (nineteen years ago)

Now seems like as good a time as any, especially since this Storm has sort of brought the thread full circle and I've been waiting to be able to do this for a little bit now, so here goes: Chicago: I Believe.

regular roundups (Dave M), Friday, 14 April 2006 03:14 (nineteen years ago)

DOES JAYMC OWN A MAROON LATE-MODEL FORD TAURUS THAT HE JUST DROVE THROUGH THE LEAVITT AND ARMITAGE INTERSECTION? CUZ I BIKED RIGHT BY YOU, DUDE.

The funny thing is, every time I see a bicyclist on the streets of Chicago, I think it's you. There was a guy I was neck and neck with on Elston this morning, and I had to pull up a little to make sure it wasn't. Yes, that was me. I was on my way to Irazu.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 14 April 2006 06:52 (nineteen years ago)

These threads are out of control, and it's embarrassing me. Whatever. I'm so fucking sleep-deprived right now. I got to meet dleone tonight, though! A quality gentleman.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 14 April 2006 06:55 (nineteen years ago)

Finally, I am seriously psyched about the Pitchfork festival now.

im excited for the futureheads, who features a band member i have a total crush on. i might come for the vice thing and lollapalooza too. why is vice doing the intonation and pitchfork doing their own thing?

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 14 April 2006 07:02 (nineteen years ago)

who knows!

gbx (skowly), Friday, 14 April 2006 09:31 (nineteen years ago)

why is vice doing the intonation and pitchfork doing their own thing?

i'm guessing both vice and pitchfork wanted all the money they could get.
