I like those threads, they bob up and down on new answers like a buoy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

Why don't the London people start I Love London?

Here I Go, Higher! Higher! (kate), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

hey, that is a good idea.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

You know, Tracer, the thought has occurred to me many a time, but I think what I like about the Chicago thread is that it's confined to one thread, and people talk about lots of different things at the same time. If we had our own board, everything would get dispersed into different threads and it wouldn't be as much fun.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

YOU HAVE AN "INTERESTING" NOTION OF FUN

JW (ex machina), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

When TITTWIS was a heavy use thread this was also suggested.

Ilx has become fractured enough without everyone going off to other boards!

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

It's just that there are so many.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

I vote that we make them a board and ban them from ILE.

JW (ex machina), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

YOU HAVE AN "INTERESTING" NOTION OF FUN

Yeah, it's totally weird that I like having a single place where I can talk to my friends all day.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, I thought the whole point of TITTWIS was being a seperate, safe place away from the boogey-posters under the thread.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

So many what, Roxy? Chicago threads? There's only one in use at any given time.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, it's totally weird that I like having a single place where I can talk to my friends all day.

DON'T BE PURPOSEFULLY OBTUSE YOU CUNT

JW (ex machina), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

who cares if there's one thread that doesn't appeal to you?!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

Jon, didn't you object the other night to being characterized as "mean"?

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

Apparently, a number of people care.

xpost, AT LEAST I DON'T HIT PEOPLE, YOU JERK

JW (ex machina), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not being obtuse! Tell me what you mean, Jon, and I'll try to answer you better.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

kate because the londoners cleverly distribute their londonocity throughout all threads ever! ilx londonness is rhizomic; chicagoness is more like a... barnacle?

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

i have also proposed "i love the internet" but that wasn't a very popular idea either

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

and at the risk of sounding prickly, what's it to you anyway?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

I think I just hate Kenan's "oh look an image in the first post" thing. Kenan is seriously the worst poster on ILX and that is counting the Aamzing Randy mk 2.

JW (ex machina), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

That's an enormous overstatement.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

Uh? Kenan doesn't always start the threads. And the image is a tradition upheld by all of us. Jesse decided that he didn't like album covers always being used as the opening image, so we've used other images since.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

otto, not much i'm just cranky

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

otto, not much i'm just cranky

that's cool with me, i'm kind of edgy right now because i haven't had any food yet today so i've being fuelled solely by nicotine and coffee and i think my blood sugar is out of whack or something because i'm picking fights with people in my office about weird random stuff.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

WOW ok which douchebag is now reviving all the Chicago threads and flooding out new answers?

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

Basically, if you want to have an insular circle jerk, take it somewhere else. There's good discussion within the Chicago threads but no one wants to tread through 300 posts of Kenan speculating what a woman looks like with no clothing on to get to it. It breaks with the larger community spirit of ILE.

Jon, I don't even know how to respond to that post. The Chicago thread is meant for Chicagoans, and anyone else who wants to post to it is welcome to, but they should also know they're going to encounter a lot of Chicago-centric talk, including inside jokes and event planning. If you're up for that, like some people are (Laurel, Jordan), then cool, but if you're not, then there's not really much reason to get worked up about it.

in keeping with that larger community spirit i suppose all future ideas for threads will have to be cleared with jon.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

I guess I'm not totally opposed to a Chicago board where we would do the same one-thread-at-a-time thing, but it seems kinda silly. Also, Jon, I really don't think that you'd be able to leave it alone.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

Ha ha.

Is this JW the community spirit police?

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

Also Jon, I'd respond to your attacks on Kenan except I don't know why I should be put in the position of having to defend my friends. For what it's worth, nobody who posts on the Chicago thread has a problem with him.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

mean, I thought the whole point of TITTWIS was being a seperate, safe place away from the boogey-posters under the thread.

Well I can't speak for everyone who posted there but for me it was just a thread for ongoing, general conversation. Much like some of the regional threads are today.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

I mean you have your little board where you don't have to bother with ILE or ILM anymore, that was the whole fucking point, but that's not good enough, everything has to be right down to your fucking petty pubescent specifications (nobody you don't like is allowed to ever have any fun!) or we get a hissy fit wherein you fuck with shit just to prove to people how eleven years old you are.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

jaymc I don't see why "xyz person likes this person" is a reason why Jon should like that person too. I like Jon well enough and don't really expect that's a reason why Kenan should like Jon, just because me or you or the Pope says so.

That being said it's pretty fucking stupid, I mean you'd think that having 95% of Kenan's posts contained in one, easily ignorable thread would be preferable to creating some beef with Chicagoans if Kenan was such a horrible, horrible person but whatever.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

LOCKE JON

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:36 (nineteen years ago)

I never said I thought that Jon, or anyone else, should like Kenan. I'm just saying that Jon seems to think that Kenan's mere presence on ILX is offensive, and I'm saying hey we Chicagoans don't have a problem with him. Which is to say I agree with your second paragraph entirely.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:36 (nineteen years ago)

i prefer the easily recognized Chicago threads (I just ignore them) to the often unmarked London threads. my only tipoff to the latter is the time zone difference, if it's late there are few revived, if it's morning there are a shitload.

I don't think jaymc is saying anyone should change their opinion about anyone else--nevermind, a few other people said this already.

JW seems to have time and energy to devote to hating the Chicago thread, as evidenced by the surprise I found a while ago when I clicked "New Answers" and found a revival of all threads Chicago. Way to indulge an obsession, duder.

Oh, and TOMBOT too!

The attention is rather flattering.

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

If everything has to go to a separate board then why bother having ILE? I don't quite care for having both ILE AND a ton of separate boards, it seems confusing and likely to create problems, like, I dunno, bullies on the separate boards chasing off/banning everyone who looks at them funny or isn't "serious enough" about the topic back to ILE, people who are interested in the topic having no idea the subboard exists, etc etc. I'm saying this as someone who has a subboard too! Taking "general chat" to a subboard seems to be basically the total opposite of why ILE was started.

I mean I really hate threads about certain subjects too! I'd like to have a board called "THREADS ALLY WON'T LIKE" and make them all go there but that seems a bit silly.

I am only mad because the Chicago search killed the board while I was posting shit.

You "accidentally" click on a thread that is clearly labelled "Chicago:____"? And then what, you "accidentally" post on there, just so it is not a total waste of time?

Also, everyone who accuses me of having too much time on their hands also has too much time on their hands.

Time spent pointing out the time you took to (pointlessly) search for and revive all those threads is not much time at all.

(PS-- explore the reasons for your obsession with Kenan...repressed lust that you fear will be unrequited? It's cute.)

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

a space for ppl to chill, shoot shit, talk about whatever crosses their mind among like-minded people = a web board ... so the chicago thread is a mini-web board stripped of all thread-making functionality and implanted barnacle-like at the top of news answers every day. if people want to silo themselves off, fine, but the silo doesn't have to sit right in the front yard. but whatever, like i said i'm cranky.

This is a good idea! It has been suggested but like "ignore user" it's inexplicably controversial. But if you know a thread is completely uninteresting to you/completely infuriating to you/completely incomprehensible to you I don't see what the harm would be in being able to delete it from your new answers (you could always make it so that it only disappears from new answers, and if you want to see all threads again you can click on questions or something).

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

I'm flattered that somebody cares enough about us to complain. All this time I thought we were just silly little unnoticed internet nobodies, but I see now that we really, truly matter.

Also, my Kenan love increases proportionally to Jon's Kenanhass. It restores balance in the universe, whitens my teeth, and gets my clothes unbelievably soft.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

You "accidentally" click on a thread that is clearly labelled "Chicago:____"? And then what, you "accidentally" post on there, just so it is not a total waste of time?

The problem (as far as I can tell from Jon's earlier post) is actually not that he "accidentally" is clicking those threads, it's that there are things he WANTS to read on those threads but Kenan makes him super duper angry. Which is why it's kind of funny that, IIRC, Jon vehemently argued against Andrew implementing an "Ignore User" feature, despite the fact that that seems to be the answer to his problems.

I think what I'm saying is that Jon perplexes me a little.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

Seriously, though, not to contribute to an already-stupid discussion or anything, but the Chicago folks basically use one thread at a time to more or less group instant-message one another all day, which is a boon for voyeurs and otherwise pretty ignorable -- if they started a separate board that would be MORE annoyingly balkanizing in that they'd be way more likely to hang out on their separate board instead of scanning adjacent ILE threads, plus the only two outcomes to that would be (a) they'd still all sit on one thread more or less IMing one another all day or (b) it'd somehow develop into an actual many-threaded ILChicago world, which seems like a really stupid idea.

I preferred yesterday when Kenan and Jon both accused one another of being virgins and I set up a funny war in my head concerning their respective girlfriends.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

why single out CHicago tho? you have UK Watercooler, NYC We Should Drink and (less so now perhaps) TITTWIS amonst others constantly being bumped up too. I actually notice the Chicago one the least and never look at it.

tehresa (tehresa), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

Also, I have this miraculous ability to "ignore thread" built directly into my very own cognitive skills, but perhaps this is an advancement of the human mind only found in those of us who regularly drink from Lake Michigan.

...if people want to silo themselves off, fine, but the silo doesn't have to sit right in the front yard. but whatever, like i said i'm cranky.

I like that. "I'm going to be an utter douche bag to a lot of people I don't know but that's okay because I'm CRANKY!!!" I'm going to start randomly pushing people into traffic and then use that excuse to explain my shitty behavior.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

Also, my Kenan love increases proportionally to Jon's Kenanhass. It restores balance in the universe, whitens my teeth, and gets my clothes unbelievably soft.

Same here, Jenny. You have to love Kenan anyway if you've ever been out drinking with him and had him turn to the stranger next to him at the bar, reveal very personal info to him and then fall off his barstool, flat on his back for NO REASON AT ALL. He's OK with me.

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

another fix would be the ability to ignore threads you don't wanna read...

You guys should just get a chat room and yiff. What's the point of even using threads if you're just going to ramble on and on about 8000 different things.

For whatever reason, ILX suits our purposes. One could just as easily ask you why you bothered to make the Noise Board a part of ILX when you could've hosted it somewhere else altogether. Again, though, the people who the thread was intended for like it just fine, so I don't see why your opinion should really matter much.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

By the way, Jenny: Tracer is usually a pretty friendly and reasonable dude. I do believe him when he says he's just being cranky today.

Agree wtih the GIRLFRIENDS FITE FOR RIGHT TO EXIST IN THIS TIMELINE idea, actually. I dunno Kenan's gal but I'm fond of Jon's -- I think I wanna live in HER parallel universe where everyone wears super-stylish vintage dresses and rides bikes.

tehresa (tehresa), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

A board for all city-related threads would be kind of stupid, really, in that you'd have to actually go over and check it, and it would encourage people to hole up even more in their own city-based cadres, just because of the trip.

An actual city-related board would actually run the risk of bringing in bunches of googlers who just discovered a whole message board devoted to their fair city.

At present the worst thing the Chicago threads do to anyone is to use ILX server resources for a chat room, which -- given that it's like 12 people in one thread -- can't be that significant, and is offset by the fact that even the people who used to post solely to Chicago threads have delurked or spread out or whatever and joined in on the rest of them. (Except for people like McLusky who've done the opposite.)

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

those of us who regularly drink from Lake Michigan.

Tee hee. This gives me a mental image of all of us on our hands and knees lapping from the lake like Kudu at a water hole. And then jaymc hears a noise and stands up straight like a prarie dog, looking for danger, when suddenly, the hive mind takes over and as if on cue we all run away, down Belmont.

John - he can bake pie for WWI vets in his free time for all I care. I think it's a weak-ass excuse to act like a dick and then claim crankiness as if it were no big deal. Which, you know, ultimately it isn't.

it would not be a whole board related to ONE city... it would be a space for all city talk... just like, oh, ILM is a place for all music talk...

tehresa (tehresa), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

What's the point of even using threads if you're just going to ramble on and on about 8000 different things.

Wouldn't this get rid of about 80% of threads on ILE??

Just admit that you hate ppls whose names start with a K and we can lock thread dude!!!

xpost no you see the ignoring threads thing would be good not necessarily because the people who need to use it would use it, but because A) when someone bitches you can point to "IGNORE THREAD" B) presumably a mod would have the power to forcibly IGNORE THREAD on a user if necessary, win win situations. (I basically generally agree with what yr saying theoretically)

Also I too had the image of ppls lapping from a lake like doggies.

hah the whole time i was growing up, my family used the "have you been drinking lake water?" line as a way of saying "YOU ARE ACTING LIKE AN IDIOT" so i don't know if chicagoans wanna necessarily pride themselves on this shared trait!

tehresa (tehresa), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

Tehresa, but a "location board" still draws people out of other areas and fragments their time/attention from main board topics. And anyway, very little of the Chicago thread talk is ABOUT CHICAGO. It's just about people's lives an' shit.

I have totally swallowed enough Lake Michigan water in my childhood to be put away forever in a nice new jacket with very long sleeves.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

And even if you started an "I Love My Place Where I Live" board, what would the point be in half of everyone here running back and forth from ILE to the other board, linking back and forth, missing things, not knowing where threads are? That sounds far more complicated and irritating to me than just visually skipping over threads about other cities.

"I Love Nabisco" has been dying to happen, though, dudes.

i run back and forth btw here and noise all the time and it seems to work out ok. many people run back and forth among noise, ile, ilm, and all the other little boards with no problem. i do, though, feel like i sometimes miss threads i might have wanted to read on ile because i skip over areas adjacent to the city threads. i'm not saying there HAS to be another board, but if anything warrants one, it's city threads. i would be just as happy with the ignore feature.

tehresa (tehresa), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

I can't believe this many people waste energy getting pissed off at what other people are talking about/how they're talking. who the fuck cares? As far as seeing the Chi-town threads always on top, I enjoy seeing their witty titles and their presence does not encroach on my ILxing experience in any way.

tehresa (tehresa), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

Tehresa, I run back and forth between boards as well, but one thing there is that each of those different boards has its own set of posters and its own distinct social atmosphere -- ILM posters are not ILE posters, no matter how many people switch between both. Starting a cities board wouldn't fit that, at first -- it would be people who talk to each other here suddenly being sent to the next room to say whatever they were going to say. And if those city-board threads did go the way of other boards, developing their own different sets of posters and different atmospheres and such -- well, I personally wouldn't like that very much, because it'd be another step in turning ILX from one big party to a bunch of private rooms where people look at you suspiciously when you come in. (Ha, although the Chicago thread did that to me once, and I was all hurt -- yes, yes, burn them!)

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

What? Who did that?

Man Man (kenan), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

my not exactly earth-shattering criticisms of chicago, tittwis, etc:

i. they go around the format of the board, which is a) ask question b) answer question

ii. they create visible cliques

pullapartgirl, if this criticism = shitty behavior then i guess this is more of the same, sorry :(

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

but if you guys are so confident in how wonderfully your chicago threadness works, why would it matter if it was located in a different spot? the community is not going to change - the same people are still going to post on it, and maybe you'll get a few new googly friends. but the people that post on the chicago threads seem to be quite committed to posting on them, and i don't think that a different location would really change that.

tehresa (tehresa), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

that was an xpost to nabisco

tehresa (tehresa), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah Tracer I agree with you on those points, and I've long had some kind of snobbery over who I perceive to be in the TITTWIS(ter) clique, but the thing here is that none of the suggested corrections solve either of those problems -- banishing cliques just seems like a way of reinforcing them as cliques.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

I've never read the Washington D.C. threads, but I've always liked the titles.

The only excluding part of the Chicago threads is the blood-in-blood-out code, but everyone has to do that.

Eazy (Eazy), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

the ignore option != banishing

tehresa (tehresa), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

(ii) is well-taken, Tracer.

But as for (i), it's disingenuous to act as if that format was ever really followed rigidly, except in the very early days of ILX. I mean, large regional/watercooler threads aren't the only culprits as far as that goes. Besides, is there any reason why the ask/answer format is a preferable one beyond "that's the way it used to be done"?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

the ignore option != banishing

Pretty sure that Nabisco is talking about your I Love Regionalism board in this case, T.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

Tehresa first off I don't live in Chicago or post to Chicago threads! And so second of all my point isn't about them -- they'll keep posting there, sure, they're all friends. The point's more about us, which is to say that at least now all those Chicago posters come onto other threads as well. So it seems counterproductive to say "your clique is in the way, please adjourn to the back room," which just makes them even more removed from everyone else, literally and figuratively.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

Tracer, criticize all you want. This is the internet; I'm pretty sure that's what it was designed for. It's the criticism followed by the excuse/apology that I find so disingenuous. You should be more like Jon - act like an ass and then blame it on Kenan. It's more honest.

Ha! John C and I both said "disingenuous." This is clearly what happens when Chicago threads are allowed to run rapant across ILE.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

they create visible cliques

OK in fairness this has existed since the beginning of ILE, city threads or not--it was a visible clique on ILM that prompted the creation of a separate board to begin with. This will continue no matter what. It's human nature. I kind of think leaving those threads as is helps un-clique-ify them, if that makes sense? Because, for example, the DC thread is posted to by the DC "clique" if you want to call it that, but also gabbneb, Dan Perry, Miss Misery, and Jon (some more than others). I would think having a separate city "section" would discourage at least some of those types of posters from joining in (especially if they live in areas that aren't likely to also have their own hopping "city cliques"--why bother checking the cities only board then?)--tho yeah more googlers from the individual cities joining in? I dunno.

Also jon is banned from ILE???

I do understand the argument that having too many individual city threads can clog up the New Answers.

gbx (skowly), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

(multiple xpost to Tehresa) The difference is that the Noise Board was created because Jon was image-flooding all sorts of threads on ILE, and it was annoying a lot of people, who understandably found it hard to avoid. Whereas Chicago keeps all of our nonsense confined to our single thread.

Jenny, he DOES kind of have puppy eyes. Esp with that new haircut. XXXXP

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

Noise board creation also had some personality issues involved, though, which is to say that noise-folks wanted to use space to act a certain way, and creating the noise board gave them a space to do it.

Noise board creation would be like if you had a party and a couple dudes wanted to wrestle in the living room, so you said hey, let's set up a wrestling mat in the yard for you two.

Chicago-talk movement would be like if you had a party and a couple people were sitting quietly in the corner talking only to one another, so you said hey, we're sick of looking at you two sit over there and talk quietly, go do it out in the yard.

If people don't want their own board there shouldn't be a move to force them. I would be sad if the occasional appearance of sarah or nick became even more occasional.

I do think the Chicago thread (and it's spawn) had a lot to do with the slow death of TITTWIS (as in drawing regulars away). But that is the nature of an online community, it changes. And I think with a title of "I Love Everything" this is the last board where people should start dictating the flow of interaction.

(FWIW I tried the Chicago threads but they just move to fast for me. I 've been dropping in with the DC crowd a bit, they're a nice bunch. Group Im'ing is fun.)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

Ha, so the upshot here seems to be that we all just read the New Answers page in different ways: city threads have never struck me as any more of a clog or an inconvenience than any of the other threads I'm not going to look at, e.g. joke threads, threads about football, threads about UK foodstuffs, threads about news events I'm not interested in, threads about computer stuff that I don't know what it is, threads I already looked at and they were lame, and so on forever. City threads seem somehow easier, actually, because it's the same title for a month at a time, so I don't have to waste time even reading the title before looking for something else.

I'm not angry about people hating on the Chicago threads, I'm angry about people talking about the same boring, meaningless shit over and over and over and over. Oh yeah, "WELCOME TO ILX" HAW HAW HAW.

and what exactly happens on the chicago/city threads?

tehresa (tehresa), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

I don't even know why I'm posting here, I'm not at work. I'm going to go eat a brownie and read and play Katamari and walk around outside and play music, fuck this.

xpost It happens on the Chicago thread too, and I get pissed off then too. So delete ILX, who cares?

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah Nick, your new(ish) job is seriously getting in the way of hilarity.

Or, maybe I'm wrong.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

I guess this is the point where I start complaining about the contents of threads that I don't like/find boring/pointless and how I can't ignore them because they're in my way, figuratively? I mean, it's not in my nature to do something like that, but I can start anytime.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

ROOOOFLESSSSSSSS

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

The difference is that the Noise Board was created because Jon was image-flooding all sorts of threads on ILE, and it was annoying a lot of people, who understandably found it hard to avoid. Whereas Chicago keeps all of our nonsense confined to our single thread.

-- jaymc (jmcunnin...) (webmail), May 5th, 2006 1:53 PM. (jaymc) (later) (link)

This is patently untrue.

JW (ex machina), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

WHO'S GETTING US DRUNK TONIGHT??!?!?

otto's balls (otto midnight), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

Jon, correct me then.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

Kevin, I would love to get you drunk but I cannot. I must rely on the legal machinations of our community property laws to wrest drinking money from my the hands of my spouse so I can get blotto after work. But if you come out I'll let you have sips of my beer.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

Your balls will have to find their own way.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

I would like to point out that the Chicago crew (most of whom I've never seen before) turning this thread into one of theirs is the ultimate fuck you.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

JMC: I made the noise board because I wanted to (one large factor was the "improved" ILX HTML parser which prevented some of the more creative thread re-designs). The wrestling ring in the yard analogy is perfect.

JW (ex machina), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

I'm totally going! Kenan, are you really going to T10 happy hour? Otto, I'll help to get you drunk if you go to T10. Is this an auxillary Chicago thread?

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

they can tag along with me. but damn it i won't be able to get downtown before happy hour ends. working out in the western 'burbs means i can't even get back to the ukie village until 6 p.m.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

damn, thanks jesse. i should've saved that record buying money and used it for gin drinking money instead.

Yeah, Jon, I liked that analogy, too.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:33 (nineteen years ago)

Kevin (otto)- I said I can HELP. I don't think I can accomplish your drunkness on my own.

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

what's the address for T10 again?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

Ok, in summary:

1) Having regional threads for FAPordination is good.
2) General inane chatter should break down regional boundries.
3) If you are discussing something suitably interesting, it is nice to put it in a thread devoted to the subject.
4) I hate threading more than Chicago threads.

JW (ex machina), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

I just realized that the DC thread has a tradition where a celebrity's name has to be in the thread title. Cute.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

Actually the tradition is to make an obscure reference to a film set in DC. We made an exception for the latest thread because the Fabio line was too amusing to a couple of us the other night.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

i don't think i'm properly attired for t10 so i'm not gonna bust my ass to get there and drink expensive drinks i can't really afford. i think i'll hole up at my usual bar in the village if anyone wants to stop by after.

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

To say that Turn on The Bright Lights grows on you is to sorely understate its creeping impact. It grows under your skin, drawing you back again and again with snatches of melody that won't get out of your head, and keeping you planted in your seat to ponder its introspective brilliance, until finally you understand that this is a jaw-droppingly great album. I've eaten my words before, so I'll prepare for that possibility as I say this: this is the best album of 2002.

I confess I used to post to most threads.
Then I mostly just posted to TITTWIS threads.
Then they seemed to lose speed.
Then I starting posting to Chicago threads.
Then they took on a new life.

I apologize for my wallflowerdome. I guess, to use the party metaphor, I prefer to mingle with just a small group of people for a long time and then move on to the next, as opposed to just working the room.

Ok, f that metaphor.

I mostly just prefer to eat the snacks and drinks margaritas.
I would like one now please.

Man Man (kenan), Friday, 5 May 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

It was Kenan. But sometimes I like to pretend it was Gareth.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Friday, 5 May 2006 20:40 (nineteen years ago)

But Kenan is already in the sentence.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 May 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

Shut up right now.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Friday, 5 May 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe it was Gareth Keenan?

John, I think you just got handled.

Man Man (kenan), Friday, 5 May 2006 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

Are you stopping by T10, btw?

Man Man (kenan), Friday, 5 May 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

That's neat that Gareth's last name is Keenan.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Friday, 5 May 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

I know, it was one of those moments when I rushed to GIS, all proud of myself for being so clever.

Lame, I know.

I'm not going to T10 -- K. and I are having dinner at the Moroccan cafe where we had our first date.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 May 2006 20:50 (nineteen years ago)

Let me be the first to say AWWWWW.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 5 May 2006 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not going to T10 -- K. and I are having dinner at the Moroccan cafe where we had our first date.

Could you maybe use more than one letter to denote your lovely gf's name?

Man Man (kenan), Friday, 5 May 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

Alright, well I might beat you all there, since I'm pretty much running out of here today. I just spent the day doing pennance for being out sick this week, and it was much less than fun.

Man Man (kenan), Friday, 5 May 2006 20:54 (nineteen years ago)

Kr.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 May 2006 20:54 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry to miss Trattoria, but I want to go another Friday when I haven't had a substantial lunch. My housemate Donna just told me that Rosebud has some kind of free Eye-talian buffet as well.

Eazy (Eazy), Friday, 5 May 2006 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

And, is anyone else a fan of the $1.99 high-quality happy-hour food at the McCormick and Schmick's bar?

Eazy (Eazy), Friday, 5 May 2006 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

Hmmm, hadn't heard about that. Is it all seafood? You know, that's where the gal you called "spunky" works.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 May 2006 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, she does? Even better!

It's not all seafood - they have half-pound burgers, um um something good of the vegetable variety, quesadillas, etc.

Eazy (Eazy), Friday, 5 May 2006 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

I am making homemade white pizza again. Waiting for the dough to rise.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 5 May 2006 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

NOW THAT'S AN INTERESTING POST!

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 5 May 2006 22:50 (nineteen years ago)

Start a separate thread about dough rising, don't expect me to wade thru all this to find out about that, Nick.

I forgive you for all that you do not know about cunts.

one month passes...
Sometime yesterday we overtook "try glasgow more" as the longest ILX thread ever. Currently at 6400+ posts.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

i can't believe you're bragging about that.
i was hoping for more of a "silent shame" thing but whatever, we're all different. that thread is a monolithic testament to shiftlessness and lost productivity.

mostly on my part, i know.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not necessarily proud of it, either, but I like statistics.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

So is that all of the Chicago threads together? seems kind of small if it is. (and that's longer than all the TITTWIS?) (And you took the time to add them all up??)

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

no, that's the most recent thread.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

ahh, sounds like time to start a new thread then.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

that smacks of effort.

how do you know sherry by the way?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

It seems like the opening of such a mega thread would be too much effort!

I know Sherry from "the scene" here (austin).

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

she stayed with me for the blackout this year, she's good people. i met some other dude who crashed with me for a night, i think it was max? he was a fucking blast.

oh no! i made a terrible typo! how embarrassing. hopefully that doesn't make you think twice about Unity FAP 2013.

what kind of a slob would not proofread a post like that a little more carefully? this one, i guess :-/

can I raise the idea of a Great Chicago Unity FAP?

What exactly do you mean by this? A get-together of all Chicago-based ILXors? You make it sound like there are factions.

jaymc, Friday, 8 March 2013 15:07 (thirteen years ago)

A get-together of all Chicago-based ILXors? Yes. I was trying to be funny, ha ha. Then that stupid typo got in the way.

and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Friday, 8 March 2013 15:12 (thirteen years ago)

Quite simply, there are Chicago-based ILXors who I have never met, and I would like to meet them.

Now that I've finally met jon/via/chi, I'm wondering which CHILXors I haven't met. BlackIronPrison comes to mind. I guess Stormy Davis was at that trivia night at Township, but we weren't introduced. :)

jaymc, Friday, 8 March 2013 15:22 (thirteen years ago)

Someone else is going to have to handle the social planning

I think this is going to be the death of a good idea.

carl agatha, Friday, 8 March 2013 15:22 (thirteen years ago)

i have met all three of those people.
here's an idea - jaymc can revive his talent show and we can just take turns doing entertaining things for each other.

and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Friday, 8 March 2013 15:23 (thirteen years ago)

I'm getting envious of all these NYC get-togethers. I want to have a huge, all-out Chicago FAP sometime soon -- an all-night extravaganza that consists of more than Kenan and I getting a six-pack and watching HBO, okay? That means that the following people are invited: Kenan Hebert, Brian Nemtusak, Ann Sterzinger, Mr. Diamond, Oops, JuliaA, Sarah Pedal, Melissa W, Todd Swiss, and whomever else I've forgotten. What do you all think? Should we just wait until the inevitable "Welcome NA and Sarah McLusky" bash in January?

Also, Jesus Christ, that was almost 10 years ago.

jaymc, Friday, 8 March 2013 15:26 (thirteen years ago)

Wowza. I found a post from June 2005 and I was like huh. It has been a long time.

I think I may have met the most people and I still haven't met everyone. You and Kenan watching HBO is almost as good as this oldie, "butter rolls"

OK so ilx user Jordan's shit hot brass band is going to be at the Green Mill at the end of the month. More here Chicago live music but not like blues bars with old people or ~jazz club~ unless it's the Green Mill

I'm thinking Friday for possible unity fap/for old time's sake gathering

and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:07 (thirteen years ago)

I've always been up for a trivia night - is that a regular thing? 'Cause I like trivia and meeting new folks. Haven't been to Green Mill in ages, but I know my gal would love going - keep posting fun events (dates help for planning).

BlackIronPrison, Monday, 11 March 2013 16:17 (thirteen years ago)

Not a regular thing (anymore), but I think a few of us would be interested in trivia.

Btw, allow me to be sappy for a moment and remind you that on this day SEVEN YEARS AGO, I met Kr at the Green Mill.

jaymc, Monday, 11 March 2013 16:24 (thirteen years ago)

the other problem with making the green mill show a unity fap event is that it's $12 (well spent, but still $12) and that's not as welcoming.

maybe trivia night would be a better idea.

i dunno, this is why i am a bad/unenthusiastic social planner -- i don't like to be consumed with making decisions about variables! got enough of those at work tbh.

xp -- omg that seems like not yesterday, but NOT 7 years ago
it's like that first year lasted for three years and the ensuing 6 years only lasted like 2.

and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:25 (thirteen years ago)

trivia night wouldn't be great for a huge FAP because we'd have to split off into smaller teams

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:27 (thirteen years ago)

Also it gets really crowded in there really fast.

carl agatha, Monday, 11 March 2013 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

We could do karaoke at that place EZ mentioned.

carl agatha, Monday, 11 March 2013 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

that doesn't exactly scream UNITY, you're right

someone else please plan this. i can't do it!

i'll go wherever you tell me to go.

and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

the other problem with making the green mill show a unity fap event is that it's $12 (well spent, but still $12) and that's not as welcoming.

I was also thinking of the fact that if the point is to hang out with a large group and chit-chat, there might be better venues than a loud, crowded club. Better, perhaps, for the Unity FAP to be its own thing, without other distractions.

jaymc, Monday, 11 March 2013 16:33 (thirteen years ago)

(xposts)

jaymc, Monday, 11 March 2013 16:33 (thirteen years ago)

i thought having a loud busting distraction would be a good thing tbh :-/

and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:35 (thirteen years ago)

Maybe? I dunno, I thought your thing was that you wanted to meet new people!

jaymc, Monday, 11 March 2013 16:36 (thirteen years ago)

I did say that, didn't I. Still, meeting me is not the focus of the event nor would it EVER be. Good lord, who on earth would leave the house just for that? I wouldn't. A visiting ilxor playing with his awesome brass band might be a more effective draw.

and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:46 (thirteen years ago)

also could be fun reunion/memory lane/anniversary of 7 years of good luck for you!
also it's the end of my spring break and likely to be the most fun i have that week since i can't go anywhere

and that sounds like a gong-concert (La Lechera), Monday, 11 March 2013 16:51 (thirteen years ago)

Alice's has very good karaoke, lots of good beer, room to mingle and talk. But if it's March 29th, you're on your own, other than when I'm free very late at night.

One way to do this in April/May:
