I think I might stop posting to the Glasgow one cause if every sodding city had one then there's be nothing else in New Answers.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

The East Bay gonna ethnic cleanse all y'all.

andy --, Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:18 (nineteen years ago)

i think it's good. keep in mind that the mongrels/sheepfuxors one sprung out of a pseudo echo thread on ILM

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:21 (nineteen years ago)

London still doesn't have one! I feel proud of this.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

baltimore: ugly ass public art (2 posts)

ham'ron (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:23 (nineteen years ago)

yeah but there's about 10 threads a day about London bus routes or whatever (xpost)

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:23 (nineteen years ago)

london's is that arctic monkeys thread

this is totally a good thing btw

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:23 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, let's have a proper Balkan war and be done with it. I hate the "mongrels/sheepfuxxors" thing and its series of titles. They're fucking annoying!

London has all those "Rolling London wanking" threads, what are you talking about?? And Groke.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:24 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway I think it's okay now. A logical regression!

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:24 (nineteen years ago)

I've never seen Alba this angry!

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:25 (nineteen years ago)

eat my fuc

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:25 (nineteen years ago)

I'm MAD AS HELL and I'm not going to look at CRAP REFERENCES IN LOCALIZED THREAD TITLES anymore.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:26 (nineteen years ago)

lol

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:26 (nineteen years ago)

Ours was started by Di (I think, is that right?) partly because we felt we were making obscure, local refs in our conversation that would've been boring everyone else, so we were being polite and popping it in its own thread.

Its nice to know our attempt at politely trying to NOT bore people like alba has only served to get us insulted instead, cheers MATE.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:27 (nineteen years ago)

that wd have been a better film

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:27 (nineteen years ago)

i hate paddy chayevsky

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:27 (nineteen years ago)

So here's a suggestion: I'll come into every thread you're on, and talk about Rove McManus, Neighbours, my cat, the number 3 tram and how much it rained last weeek. OK?

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:28 (nineteen years ago)

hee hee hee, that is cute xxxpost

ai lien (kold_krush), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:28 (nineteen years ago)

Strangely, New York has no devoted thread. The drinks one is occasionally revived but that's all.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:29 (nineteen years ago)

there are no people like alba

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:30 (nineteen years ago)

So here's a suggestion: I'll come into every thread you're on, and talk about Rove McManus, Neighbours, my cat, the number 3 tram and how much it rained last weeek. OK?

If it would bring us all together then FINE. We're living in a global SOCIETY, people!

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:31 (nineteen years ago)

(alternatively, perhaps there should be "I Love London", "I Love Bay Area", "I Love FUXXORSHEEP" boards set up)

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:31 (nineteen years ago)

there is no ass like jessica alba's.

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

I'm just a crazy idealist.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

A lot of Noize Board threads are NYC threads.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

there should be a Claptonite thread just for me and Mark S, with stelfox and Mikey G a-lurkin'

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:33 (nineteen years ago)

and the lexend!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:34 (nineteen years ago)

Where The Lex is forced to talk about Eric Clapton, yes.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:34 (nineteen years ago)

I don't like it one bit, either.

"Clapton can't be indie, he's god"

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:37 (nineteen years ago)

did those police sirens just come up yr way, sororah?

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:40 (nineteen years ago)

Mark – how long have you lived in Clapton? Only, in 1999, I went a couple of times to this funny veggie café downstairs on the corner (I think) of some back street. It was really hippieish and cheap. They had like, typewritten flimsy menus and that, with desserts for 75p or something! But when I've mentioned it to my friends I went with, they deny all knowledge.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:43 (nineteen years ago)

If it helps at all, I don't post that much on the mongrels thread, and I lurk/read the chi and toronto threads, and talk about Aussie stuff elsewhere as aprope. A threads a thread, what would yr solution be? I mean, were AIM chats off board where people were left out of the loop any better? (serious question)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:43 (nineteen years ago)

YES! They are RUBBISH loops!

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:44 (nineteen years ago)

you are weird

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:44 (nineteen years ago)

See, this is what is always comes back to.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:45 (nineteen years ago)

A lot of Noize Board threads are NYC threads.

Fixed that for ya, jay.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:46 (nineteen years ago)

YES! They are RUBBISH loops!

I dont get it. So AIM chats were good or rubbish?

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:46 (nineteen years ago)

Legendary wakeboarder Steve Shasta doesn't live in NYC.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:47 (nineteen years ago)

Ha, Pleasant. There is also the Downtown Brooklyn Thread that pops up from time to time.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:47 (nineteen years ago)

I went to a gay & lesbian pizza restaurant in madrid, which was hippieish and cheap, and no one believes me about that either.

Cathy (Cathy), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:48 (nineteen years ago)

haha I kind of miss the aim chats! There's some things that are really good and practical abt the local threads (talking about gigs and chitchat and stuff) but also I miss people like di and sarah mclusky wandering out onto the other threads. Of course if it weren't for the local threads maybe they wouldn't be on ile at all! I used to participate in the chicago thread but it moves too fast these days. The phenomenon is what it is.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:53 (nineteen years ago)

Have AIM chats! I'm not saying they're good or bad. But if people get upset about being left out of some social loop as a result (I hate social loops, esp. when it comes to the internet, they are all RUBBISH was my point) then make some yahoo group or something.

literalisp (literalisp), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:58 (nineteen years ago)

Oh no alba, I didn't mean being left out of social loops (guh, this is an intarweb board, wtf), I meant when people ON ilx were making certain (often snide) remarks and injokes that didn't make sense unless you'd been on said AIM chat, and if you said "huh I dont get it" you got told "you had to be there" or whatever instead of someone just explaining why ILXor A hated ILXor B and wanted to knee him in the bollox, or whatever.

Not that it matters in the end anyway, tho. I just ramble shit on here and hope I piss people off - seems to work.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

There can't be that many defunct veggie caffs on the corner of Clapton back streets! Actaully maybe there can. It was perhaps the sub £1 desserts that was the defining characteristic. Oh well.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:00 (nineteen years ago)

are there any balkan ilx0rs?

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 12:01 (nineteen years ago)

mladik used to post to the noize board

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 12:03 (nineteen years ago)

I am 1/4 balkan.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

i always assume these threads are just people organizing to meet up, i don't understand what's eating alba. maybe i'm wrong, and the threads actually have non-meeting-up-related material.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

i agree with jerry the nipper

nick d. should really have his own board, i think.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

I could decide, reading down Alba's dissection of New Answers, whether it was the pinefox or Tom. I think he's halfway between them in some ways, though obviously with thoughts and jokes not native to either.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

why does Enrique never want to FAP?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

WHAT'S EATING ALBA

this is my nu-motto

(ans = alba i think regrets the self-loathing assumptions behind the self-balkanisation) (= they are all "do not read the this if you hate us" except no longer so much of an i-dare-you gag)

(but the regret focuses as much on the is-the-world-come-to-this sadness-of-necessity as any snarky judgement abt those who are making the threads) (before everyone twitchily jumps in)

(ans = alba i think regrets the self-loathing assumptions behind the self-balkanisation) (= they are all "do not read the this if you hate us" except no longer so much of an i-dare-you gag)

Self loathing? that's a curious choice of words. Perhaps self protection, but is it entirely unjustified?

I ate myself. I want a pie. (kate), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

I went to see that naughty tiger at the museum where it lives.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

um that's what the second parenthesis explores kate! i heart rainy and maryann and "do not read this if you hate us" is funny but the gambit does risk being a coverr for self-loathing as well as justified self-protection!

anyway this has been my "insight" into what's eatin alba pro and con

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

Even paranoiacs have enemies.

I ate myself. I want a pie. (kate), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

idealism = assuming the right kind of encounter will dissolve all possible enmity
(necessary?) disenchantment = realising this is not so :(

my projection onto alba = me swinging between these two poles i think

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

ha ha. but what music is playing in the background?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

Haha so did I! Naughty tiger!

London has all those "Rolling London wanking" threads, what are you talking about?? And Groke.

And LJ, in fairness. It's only natural that London itself is a bit Balkanized.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's all about my fear of commitment.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

the kit! (g-kit), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

The only time the balkanization bothers me is when I wish that more ILXors knew some of the awesome Chicago posters who don't post much elsewhere, like Jenny, Amanda, Eric, and Kelsey.

one year passes...

What, now.

acrobat, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 10:26 (eighteen years ago)

I went through a period, partly during the time when technical issues led us to use the Watercooler, where I had a fair bit of inspiration for threads and started a fair few. I got a fair bit of stick for doing this, chiefly from RJG and Enrique. I think Dom may have joined in too, tho I might be misrepresenting him. I did wonder whether the balkanisation process had progressed to the stage where hardly anyone wanted to voice their opinions on topics, issues (call em what you will) but just wanted to talk in their little groups on what they were up to. This, I felt, was a sad state of affairs.

I do read the Watercooler quite a bit and post to it occasionally. This is coz there are ppl I know and like on there. Is it hypocritical to do this and bemoan the balkanisation simultaneously? I am unsure.

I am surprised that there is a dedicated Hastings thread. After all, Hastings is quite a small town (population 84,600 according to Wikipedia) so I find it astonishing that there are sufficient ilxors there to make a thread viable. But then, there are a lot of surprising things in life.

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

by Watercooler I meant Sandbox, in my first sentence, above. My thoughts were racing ahead of what I was typing. This may be a form of metathesis.

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:17 (eighteen years ago)

I hate those threads! get out of the university computer clusters you losers!

DG, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:20 (eighteen years ago)

I like the way the balkanization contains certain people. That said, it is a bit sad that everything happens in balkanized groups. Still, it allows proper dialogue etc which is a great thing during a dull day.

You got stick because you started so many silly threads iirc.

kv_nol, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:23 (eighteen years ago)

one person's silly is another's original and thoughtful.

I don't recall starting any parody threads; which is one form of silly which gets ppl's backs up.

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:24 (eighteen years ago)

Mark I think the issue was less that people didn't want to talk about stuff and more they don't really want to see twelve threads all started by the same person on the same day.

I don't really have any interest in posting on any of the Balkanised threads but it's inevitable at this stage in ILE's life that people want to have chattier conversations, so I'm glad there are threads entirely devoted to it.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:26 (eighteen years ago)

one person's silly is another's original and thoughtful.

Maybe silly was the wrong word. Vapid might be a better word (my opinion only, I accept that I might be alone).

kv_nol, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

"This is the thread where I say" had loads of children, and then died. Like Charlotte in Charlotte's web, I guess.

Mark G, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:28 (eighteen years ago)

fair point: it is difficult, if you are the kind of person whose inspiration comes in fits and starts, to save up your threads for future occasions and submit them at intervals tho. Weeks go by when I can't think of any, in contrast.

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:29 (eighteen years ago)

nuke glasgow thread pls

DG, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:34 (eighteen years ago)

i think the balance is okay.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:35 (eighteen years ago)

I enjoyed both grandpoint genie's threads and the humour that arose from them.

blueski, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:35 (eighteen years ago)

everything is balkanisation, really. a thread about football or a political issue you don't care about or a television show you don't watch.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

what's wrong w/ glasgow DG?

RJG, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:38 (eighteen years ago)

they don't really want to see twelve threads all started by the same person on the same day.

this has never been rationally explained. what difference does it make who starts the threads? if they were all judged to be really good topics for discussion would people still complain? probably, but that's dumb.

blueski, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:38 (eighteen years ago)

if they were all judged to be really good topics for discussion

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:38 (eighteen years ago)

ILX tends to react quite badly to 'dumb' questions/threads that are actually earnest but light-hearted rather than 'jokey'.

blueski, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:39 (eighteen years ago)

B-but you said you enjoyed the humour that arose!

That mong guy that's shit, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

some people on it, RJG, sometimes collateral damage cant be helped

as for teh balkanisation perhaps we need some sort of Tito figure to bring us all happily together again?

DG, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:42 (eighteen years ago)

I like the way the balkanization contains certain people.

ha ha OTM

blueski, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:42 (eighteen years ago)

just nuke the top gear guy thread

RJG, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 11:46 (eighteen years ago)

it's easy
