AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION GO ALL THE WAY FROM P TO L!!!

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

i don't live in chicago anymore.

when does that new nintendo come out?

gbx (skowly), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

Now if that title doesn't make you want to click then I don't know what would.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

New nintendo and apple products to be announced MAY 9TH.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

:D

gbx (skowly), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

Juneish? For new Nintendo? I might be making this up completely and utterly?

You know, the guy that used Pete's bathroom didn't even actually look like Fabio, when I think about it. In any way.

xpost OH Mayish, I was not far off.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:19 (nineteen years ago)

well I mean the nintendo is already announced but the serious press coverage and meaty details are going to start spilling that day in earnest. This Apple thing, whatever it is, I just now found out about.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:19 (nineteen years ago)

It probably sucks, it's Apple. I'm gonna get that kind of commentary in while I can, before they unban Jon :D

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

June is the DS Lite. I think gbx is talking about the WII. That is coming out in Q4 2006, which is code for the week after Thanksgiving.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

that nintendo might be my First Ever video game box. if it's only $99.

xp thought he was unbanned already?

gbx (skowly), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

O RLY? Whoops. I was just kidding, about the sucking.

I don't want a DS Lite cos they are white.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

things I am really anticipating this year in no particular order:

  • Star Wars theatrical editions on DVD

  • my Master's Degree

  • A new computer of some sort

  • the Wii

  • Hi I'm boring, and your name is?

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

    Who banned Jon?

my brother is making me listen to gnarls barkley and I'm not sure how I feel about it yet.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

"Star Wars theatrical editions" sounds funny to me, like it's some super special new edition that's like extra melodramatic, or like some high school satirical production or something.

Am I ever going to get the answer as to why you need a new computer?

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

because I broke my old one and yours is dirty.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:33 (nineteen years ago)

but mostly because Josh has like 3 new computers.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

    it's NOT FAIR.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

    new computer >>>>> old computer

    simple math.

gbx (skowly), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

Old computer is actually pretty new though, is the thing that is making me curious as to why he's so darned insistant on a new one THIS YEAR instead of next year or something. Also Josh's limbs go numb on a regular basis and he's full of cholesterol and I don't see anyone doing THAT.

Actually I wouldn't really mind had we not got JACKED on DC taxes this year.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

ally, congratulations on your superior brain use (i.e. remembering) skills.

ZR (teenagequiet), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:37 (nineteen years ago)

is it worth getting a new iMac if i just incurred a bunch of student debt and already have a functional 3 yr old powerbook?

    probably not, huh.

gbx (skowly), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think there's anything wrong with getting a new computer every year. You can just collect them like some mad scientist.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

xpost No see that's my theory about getting a new computer right now too. If I knew what exactly he wanted it for besides "Josh has one" I'd be maybe a little more acquiescent about the idea, but really the tax thing + wedding + upcoming travel + Nintendo products = computer doesn't seem prioritized to me. BUT I AM A GURLZ.

ZR, do you remember the guy we are talking about tho? He didn't even have long hair, IIRC.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

When you describe Josh in terms of his gadget fascination and health problems he sounds like he must be a huge fatty who never leaves the house. Poor guy.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

    I HATE FINALS!

(scuttles back to study assumption/rejection of executory contracts under 365)

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

If you describe Luke in terms of anything that has to do with Luke, you'd assume the same thing. What up with ppl you know.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

You know if you change your name to Big Loud Ape Mountain I can just refer to you as BLAM all the time.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

    consider it done, your Allyzayness

Big Loud Ape Mountain (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

No I think describing Luke in terms of the things he does you would get more of a picture like oh well shit basically pick any of the red meat regulars and that's basically Luke anyway.
    http://www.aan.org/binary/560cb8a5/MEAT.gif

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

    BLAM!!! Nice.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

yeah ally i don't really remember that dude. i was trying to recall what we decided the new thread should be, got stuck on "charo is eating my leftovers" or something, and gave up.

ZR (teenagequiet), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

He did have greasy longish hair, not fabio long at all but down to the collar all around. parted in the middle for extra douchiness. He was sitting with the woman who was trying to offset her strong-jawed horseyness by dressing not very differently than that 40something from the Tonga Room in her pajamas.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

Who do you think you are, jaymc???

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

    Detective Man

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

Hi Metro Area DC. I grew up in Delaware and that's totally close.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:00 (nineteen years ago)

I think it counts as metro area!

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:00 (nineteen years ago)

Your state-run boozemporia are more impressive to me than Virginia's.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

DE boozemporia aren't state-run. However, we did just recently start selling booze on Sundays.

    TAKE THAT JESUS.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

I CAN LEAVE WORK AT 4PM TODAY!!! THANKS HISPANIC HERITAGE!!!

    oh, hunterpaws

gbx (skowly), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

I think we can officially make Hunter Age 3 our mascot at this point.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

seriously that drawing is like the Wyld Stallyns of ilx

ZR (teenagequiet), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

    that should be the favicon.

gbx (skowly), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

the bosstrons of lockheed have informed me that today is Gordon Biersch day. dud or free beer?

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

I guess Gordon Biersch is no worse than any place else. Wait, I'm totally making that up, GB is terrible.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

But the beer is good and will get your husband DRUNK.

Isn't that what we all want?

Big Loud Ape Mountain (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

when yr unemployed, you forget it's Friday. i haven't even changed out of my bathrobe!

gbx (skowly), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

the beer isn't particularly great IMO

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

There is Le Bar, the Library Lounge, a few other places a bit to the west. This www.readexpress.com map thing is fucking brilliant.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

go to gordon biersch. it's free.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

does anybody else stop working soon and want to meet up?

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

i sorta hated GB the one time i've been there but that was probably due to company more than it was the establishment. free beer = automatic non-dud.

Zart Robotron (teenagequiet), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

No, not particularly great. But not terrible! And they have outside seating and its nice outside.

Big Loud Ape Mountain (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

it's not actually free half the time and I'm not particularly interested in going and listening to people talk shop after managing to successfully avoid doing any real work for 7 hours today. Apparently the oversight/support group people have been over there since 2:30 so I'm like oh fuck you.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

    One of the GOGs sez:

When I'm asked to meet friends after work downtown or pick a spot for cocktails near McPherson Square, I've been turning to the underutilized bar at Ceiba, which boasts cocktails from South America and the Caribbean at surprisingly affordable prices.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

alright bros, i'm outski. i'd come get drinks but i must frenziedly clean my room cuz a's got some bizarre hangup about actaully being able to see the floor when she walks in, and then we're going to a party. have xxxcellent weekends.

Zart Robotron (teenagequiet), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

I believe you mean MEXXXXCELLENT weekend!!! Have fun at yr party

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

mexxxcellent it is. pete has promised me he will drink five margaritas tonight and i'm not letting him off the hook, so i predict fun will be had.

Zart Robotron (teenagequiet), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

Pete + tequila = keep him away from other things.

we were downtown again this afternoon and saw TWO MORE Lamers buses.
OK, right, 33 down is six letters, clue is "DC tourists",
    http://www.golamers.com/images/coach_bus.jpg
    wtf.
Anyway the Sugimoto is a can't miss, they didn't have as much of his color work as I was hoping for but the oceans/movie theaters/buddhas are totally sweet. Also, de Kooning has not aged well at all. Jesus.

Also, BARBARO, THE PERFECT BEAST. Apparently we have a friend who unbeknownst to us is a huge horse fan and has picked the last 4 Derby winners! Wow. Hopefully we can get her to join us in the Preakness infield.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Saturday, 6 May 2006 23:46 (nineteen years ago)

And when I say the Sugimoto buddhas are totally sweet I mean "completely disorienting."

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Saturday, 6 May 2006 23:47 (nineteen years ago)

    HI DERE I AM BACK!

Thanks to Ally and Tom and Mr. Noodles for negotiating my return to ILE. Though a bit surprised over how agitated I was at being in communicado, for, like, two whole days, at least I got to keep up.

So, if anyone wants an herb handoff tomorrow at the museum (I WILL BE DERE AT NOON), let me know. BTW herbs available tomorrow = thyme, tarragon, and/or parsely. Later in the gardening season there will be sage, spearamint, cilantro, swiss chard, hot peppers (jalapeno and serrano), tomatoes, and, uh maybe some other stuff (sugar snap peas? cucumbers?).

And hey is Preakness really going down? 'Cause if tickets can be had I am totally in (and can shepard people in my car, too!)

Speaking of sheparding, I went to the MD Sheep and Wool Festival at the Howard County Fairgrounds today. It was. . . uh, I don't know how even to describe. Lamb sausage was awesome, though!

quincie (quincie), Sunday, 7 May 2006 01:00 (nineteen years ago)

    A) This is Ally, not Tom.
    B) Preakness is going down, we have some NON-ILX FRIENDS (OH NOES) who are dedicated to going, so any ILX FRIENDS (OH NOES) who want to come we should organize this.
    C) HERB HANDOFF AWESOME??????? One day I will repay herbs and shrimps and etc with a big feasts for ppls.
    D) Oh that means we will be at the building museum tomorrow, if we ever finish watching Man on the Moon.
    E) HERE I COME TO SAVE THE DAY!!!!!!!

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Sunday, 7 May 2006 03:18 (nineteen years ago)

back to our regularly scheduled Tombot, tonight's netflix feature has been Man On The Moon, starring Jim Carrey and Paul Giamatti as Tony Clifton.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Sunday, 7 May 2006 03:19 (nineteen years ago)

SQUARECOATS (plsmith), Sunday, 7 May 2006 03:36 (nineteen years ago)

ack i just really embarrassingly replied-to-all.

SQUARECOATS (plsmith), Sunday, 7 May 2006 03:48 (nineteen years ago)

I saw the Lamers buses out in Fairfax county today! two of them! I went to Super H Mart and had a fantastic salad with sashimi in it at the cafe, and got loads of fresh veggies, and then some evangelical Korean woman tried to convert me and wanted me to pray with her, standing right there in the dried seaweed aisle. I was like.. ma'am, it's not that I'm ashamed of what people think, the reason I'm not going to pray with you is because I say no! and that's the reason! arrrgh. you would think I'd have run into more evangelicals in small town USA but no, the first time I encounter this particular mindset is in massive korean suburban supermarket

it was sort of terrifying, and then I got "days of swine and roses" in my head and couldn't get rid of it for a while..

    dar1a g (daria g), Sunday, 7 May 2006 04:03 (nineteen years ago)

I often say to things " are you alive?" - their responses vary!

Hey everyone, thanks for the cultural Sunday. Btw, the Streets album is really good. Re Preakness, are we aware that it costs $45 to stand in the infield? All the other tickets, are of course, sold out. I remembered the album I forget to remember to get at Olsson's: Scott Walker. I think it is out now.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 8 May 2006 12:19 (nineteen years ago)

That was a truly enjoyable Sunday afternoon! Special thanks to Brian for patiently answering my utterly uninformed architecture questions and StephenX for making objects in the gift shop extra entertaining. Also: dar1a for kooky snax, mary and ally for being as intrigued by that random 1952 kitchen as I was, and tom for excellent architectural model commentary.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 8 May 2006 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

Mookie I was wondering as to your whereabouts because there was talk (or at least I talked) of BIG HUNT on THURSDAY. If I remember correctly you are a fan of the BIG HUNT, yes? Please tell me about the BIG HUNT.

quincie (quincie), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

The BIG HUNT has a pretty good beer selection! And some decent junkfood on the menu. When it is toilet time, go to the unisex one in the back on the side of the main entrance, because last time we were there Ally caught some dude totally yanking his peter in the ladies' on the other side.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 12:30 (nineteen years ago)

So are others up for Thursday? Where is The Big Ape? Done with exams yet?

quincie (quincie), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

It's hard to keep up with you guys too! I think it's cause your on the east coast.

    I want a non-regional chat thread. A new one.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 12:34 (nineteen years ago)

BLAM be out for Thursday. I have an exam the following day. The Big Hunt officially gets my approval, however. They have a good selection of brews.

As a future proposition, anyone up for watching the Champions League Final on Wednesday afternoon? I was thinking Lucky Bar, and I can totally hold down a table or two from 12:30 on.

Big Loud Ape Mountain (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 12:40 (nineteen years ago)

That would be NEXT Wednesday, the 17th, of course.

Big Loud Ape Mountain (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 12:46 (nineteen years ago)

SQUARECOATS (plsmith), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

Hunan is pretty awesome, though the mystery dumpling plate still kinda freaks me. Or, I mean, would freak me if I was a vegetarian, knowing full well there were veggie dumplings in that mix, but thrown in with IDENTICAL LOOKING pork and chicken dumplings. Why don't they separate them? It's a mystery. Hence the nickname, mystery dumpling plate.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 13:19 (nineteen years ago)

    Is Hunan going down tomorrow?

Big Loud Ape Mountain (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

Hunan is right by P & Z's workplaces. It is not particularly near mine. I have to say that I am not dedicated enough to eating lunch to want to walk that far if it is cold and rainy. Just cold or just rainy would be one thing! I know it's not very bro but most bros don't wear skirts to work every day and freeze their ass off if the weather is unpleasant, y'know.

Big Loud Ape Mountain (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

    WHEN WE GONNA DRINK?

quincie (quincie), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

Also, does the BAR not count as a law school final? Which one are you taking???

quincie (quincie), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

BLAM, I said IF it was cold and rainy. Clearly it was hypothetical and I was attending in all other circumstances.

I THOUGHT WE WERE DRINKING THURSDAY HAPPY HOUR?

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

The Bar is not until August, and it is not being given by Catholic University. Ergo, not a law school final for me.

The Bar is also a whole other animal - finals are "What is the law? Is it THIS or THAT?" Lots of bandying back and forth of caselaw, statutes, etc. The Bar simply asks "What is the law in this jurisdiction?" so, its black letter law as opposed to all this hypothetical bullshit.

I am taking the CA bar.

Big Loud Ape Mountain (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

True, you said if. But then reasserted these concerns over a hypothetical situation like you were seriously concerned for your well-being, and we were being insensitive. I was not being insensitive, you stupid girl.

Big Loud Ape Mountain (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

Ally, I highly recommend j. crew's tall trousers. I wear a T8 but I think they go down as far as a T4? If the T4 is too big then the only solution will be to put you on a strict diet of beer, cheese, and Krispy Kremes. Oh and duck fat.

    Stephen X (Stephen X), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

I object to Krispy Kreme, especially if it's where that deli place used to be.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

It's not a real Krispy Kreme! It's a small one where they have the river of icing but they ship the donuts in from (I think) the Alexandria location. I can't believe they have the audacity to use a "HOT NOW" sign.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

It is where the Benetton used to be.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

Am I correct to assume that the BIG HUNT has a dead animal theme?

If only I WAS drunkie for the babysitting! It may have given me more patience when I was trying to execute my carefully planned 'educational activity' and my subject kept holding things up by stopping to pick WEEDS. "Oh these are sooooooo beautiful!" etc. etc.

Little girl, I hate to break it to you but that is a WEED!

quincie (quincie), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

It's right by the Metro entrance at P St, it used to be something like a deli place but I could be thinking of something else. Anyhoo it is a Krispy Kreme now, which I object to on the basis of it being disgusting.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

Zart Robotron (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

SQUARECOATS (plsmith), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

In grad school, on a dare, I ate seven Krispy Kremes one after the other. Tummy ache ensued.

quincie (quincie), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

I object to that Krispy Kreme taking up space that should rightfully be used for a walk-up Pho lunch counter. That's an eminent domain seizure I'd totally get behind, the good of the many etc.

Big Loud Ape Mountain (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

Fatteys appear to be somewhat scarce in Dupont!

quincie (quincie), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

When they came for the fatteys, I said nothing, for I was not a fattey

Zart Robotron (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

quincie (quincie), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

There are a TON of lawfirms around there. there have to be at least a few hundred fatteys there during the hours of 8-6.

Who will provide the deep-fried, sugar coated comfort for the fatteys, if not KK?!?!?!

Big Loud Ape Mountain (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

better than room temp i will agree with. hot's tough to beat, though. kk donuts were my cub scout troop's most successful fundraiser ever, back in the go-go early 90's, before we knew about the evils of trans fats and such, or at least before we cared.

I have a totally unrelated question:

I've done the search function thing, and I was wondering if any of y'all had any input past that:

This could be the early onset of a mid-life crisis, but does anyone have any idea about longboard skating? I was never very good at tricks back in the day, but I loved me some hill skating. Anyone got anything to contribute, other than ridiculing me mercilessly (which is prolly deserved)?

i recommend an old-school board, instead of the longboard.

SQUARECOATS (plsmith), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, why the interest in longboard in particular?

quincie (quincie), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

I want to do the cruisin' down the street thing. I suppose any board would be better than the one I have now - which is none.

Pete - do m&d still have my old Jeff Kendall at the house? That would suffice for more than the time being.

Regardless, I miss skating. It was so fun.

Big Loud Ape Mountain (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

hmm - i bet they do. you might have to get some new trucks, but i bet it's still in good order.

the problem i have with longboards is threefold (being TOTALLY frank):

1)utility - if you ever DO want to do tricks, you wont be able to on a longboard
2)aesthetics - i think people on longboards look pretty stupid
3)convenience - youll definitely have to carry the board sometimes; carrying a longboard is way more trouble, and i think people carrying longboards look REALLY stupid

SQUARECOATS (plsmith), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

i really like the "old school board as cruisin' board" thing.

SQUARECOATS (plsmith), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

pete, this longboard-trashing is ridiculous! come on! "and then the persian gulf war rolled around, and i was like 'dude, i'm there!'" COME ON AND BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFE PLZ TO GROW UP ETC.

Zart Robotron (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

Why new trucks? Couldn't the bushings just be replaced? Regardless, I'm totally getting that thing back.

Big Loud Ape Mountain (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

somebody should invent a folding longboard.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

Big Loud Ape Mountain (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

mine's hit the stage where depending on the day/humidity it looks either totally respectable or gigantic and borderline frightening. i really miss the days when i could just say "whatever" and let it get like 14, 15 inches long, but at least i'm getting laid now.

Have you been to the English deer park? (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

I got a haircut yesterday! Inspired by Mary, I asked him to make it more electroclash, and we decided that future haircuts will also be inspired by musical movements. I think next up will be noize, which will involve chunks of hair being cut out at random intervals. Then we will move on to what Greggggggg (my stylist) describes as "indie rock" hair, which will involve going shorter??? (I'm not sure this is the only "indie rock" option?). But we need more suggestions! Help me pimp my hair!

quincie (quincie), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

OK! Shrimp it is. When should you come over to eat the shrimp tho, is the question.

I don't have very good hair suggestions, look at my own hair.

PR&Partners, Rockville outpost (Gregggg used to be at the Bethesda outpost, and there is a Tenley outpost two minutes from my place, but NOOOOOO Greggggg had to move to far away one! Although it is more or less on my way home from work, so not so bad really).

Anyhow, I would wait until you evaluate my hair tomorrow (BIG HUNT BIG HUNT) before you decide if it is worth $60. When I first started going to Greggggg, his rate was $35. He does give me free trims in between actual haircuts, though. But geez, sixty bucks??? What am I, some sort of yuppie (don't answer that).

"The next day, the X-Men and the Shi'ar Imperial Guard were teleported to the Blue Area of the moon where they would do battle, with the victors deciding the fate of Phoenix. The Imperial Guard was able to defeat all of the X-Men, leaving Cyclops and Phoenix alone to make a final stand against them. When a stray bolt of energy hit Cyclops, Jean Grey's panic overrode the psychic circuit-breakers Xavier had placed within her mind and the full might of Phoenix's powers were once more unleashed. At this point, Lilandra abandoned the delicate approach and ordered Plan Omega, which would consist of destroying the whole Solar system in hopes of eliminating Dark Phoenix in the process.

With events spiralling out of control, Xavier ordered the X-Men to subdue Jean to preempt Lilandra's emergency measure. The team battled her until she regained her senses. Running to a back alley on the moon, Phoenix activated a Kree weapon and disintegrated herself in front of a helpless Cyclops. He later deduced that Jean had planned her sacrifice from the moment they had landed on the moon."

    from the super-skrull wiki:

Several years later, Kl'rt developed cancer. Maddened with pain, he attacked the Canadian physicist superhero Sasquatch, who converted him into a stream of dissociated particles and transmitted him into Earth's van Allen belts. Peculiarly, when he was subsequently freed by the Silver Surfer, the cancer had vanished. This was caused by a "chronal anomaly" in the van Allen belt, which regressed the pattern of Kl'rt's body to a time before he had been exposed to Skrull carcinogens.

    Ultimate Spider-Man Annual #1

    "More Than You Bargained For"

After breaking up their respective relationships, Peter Parker and Kitty Pryde, aka Shadowcat, think about their lives. Despite having saved the world several times, both feel lonely and misunderstood. Kitty daydreams about her long-running crush Peter. Finally, she musters the strength to telephone him and ask him out for a date. Peter is amazed, but gladly agrees.

Eating in a food court, Kitty and Peter are immediately attracted to each other. They find many points in which they connect, both as a superhero and as a person. Peter tells Kitty he is solo because his girlfriends would always be in danger. Kitty replies that this would not apply for superheroines (like her), and Peter says she has a point.

Suddenly, there is an explosion. Peter turns into Spider-Man and tells her to stand back, until Kitty points out she is a superhero herself. With good teamwork, they take out the culprit, namely the Shocker. Spidey swings away with Kitty, and both state how much they enjoyed the date. Suddenly the Blackbird of the X-Men appears to take Kitty home. But just before takeoff, Kitty and Peter share a deep, passionate kiss.

The Annual finishes with Peter and Kitty returning home very happy. The last panels show them chatting in the Internet.

Ctown NYC-DC usually either stops in Philly or B'more. Except for one time DC-NYC when there was an unscheduled 2 hr stop in Wheaton.

For all interested, I took my final to what I feel was at least a passing level of success last night. So - SUCCESS!

I then went to a party over on Capitol Hill. Party was alright, until some band came on the radio that, during that song, sounded like the Fake Accents. I proceeded to attempt to pimp out Pete's band's performance tonight at Galaxy Hut with a "Hey. If you like these guys, or this song, you all should come and check out my brother's band tomorrow night."

Dude gets all up in my grizz(ill) about "Emo being dead" and everyone who does emo being a "Weezer doppleganger" (actual quote). I looked at him and I said "Do you play an instrument?" His response was "No, but that's irrelevant." "Okay. I just wanted to know exactly how far to take your critical comments as to the importance of emo in today's rock bands. Thanks." He looked at me and had no idea what to do except brood and act like a petulant child for the rest of the time I was there.

Which was only about 45 minutes, as a classmate of mine and I decided that, without beer, this party was pretty goddamn lame. So we walked in the rain to the Pour House. Where I fell walking down the wet stairs. Twice. At this point, I was not drunk - it was totally the torrential downpours that caused my slip. Regardless of the cause, my left asscheek and rear thigh are SO sore this morning, it sucks. But that would be a fond memory of a drunken evening if

I HADN'T FALLEN ASLEEP ON THE METRO!!!!! or passed out. But I wasn't that drunk...regardless .....I FELL ASLEEP ON THE METRO!!!!!

So, I wake up in Vienna at 2:45. I miss the train back to the city, which would have carried my drunk ass home, so I had to call a Red Top cab from the Vienna Metro at 3am this morning and pay 25 dollars for a ride home. I made it home, walked the dog, and then passed out.

I am making ribs, biscuits and cole slaw this afternoon and will probably take a nap prior to the FA's appearance at Galaxy Hut. I hope to see you all there.

    Damnit, my ass hurts.

otherwise known as hey on females' bdays you have to suck it up and eat your boy's favorite food because dudes basically only learn how to cook like two or three things and for ladies who don't like to get huge and fat the cheeseburger + side salad option is better than a sirloin and home fries dressed in grated cheese.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Sunday, 14 May 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

big unexpected bonus to having Ally's bday fall on Mother's Day this year is my Dad's usual phone call of "Hey Tom! This is your Dad, reminding you that today is Mother's Day!" immediately transitioned into "Let's sing Ally Happy Birthday together! Hold the phone up!" which while its own form of unique disaster was not as demoralizing as the norm, by a long shot.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Sunday, 14 May 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

Good times at the Hut last night! Totally worth endless Metro-ing with the whole of the Law Enforcement Officers Association convention. With so many cops on board, why did I somehow feel LESS safe? Mr. Q and I debated whether or not off-duty cops outside their jurisdictions could carry arms on the DC metro.

Hightlight of the Hut (aside from the FAs, of course): blonde chick enlisting her friend to pass her card to Mr. Q all "you should give this girl a call sometime" WHILE I WAS SITTING RIGHT THERE! I think this just reinforces my creepy suspicion that Mr. Q and I look more like brother and sister than husband and wife.

Happy happy birthday to Ally and happy mothers' day to all da mothers, particularly Mother Q., who is, all in all, pretty awesome.

quincie (quincie), Sunday, 14 May 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

Oh and Tom: please to explain preparation of buffalo burgers--I bought some ground buff. at the market this a.m. After my disastrous buffalo chili experience I am a bit gun-shy on this. Is ponzu essential to maximal buffalo enjoyment or do I just have to grill it really rare or add fat somehow or what?

quincie (quincie), Sunday, 14 May 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, how did you get to the market? We were just wondering--because the metro is totally fucked here, someone got hit by train apparently at like 10am. We didn't think to call you until we got home! We were like oh noes where is q did we miss her we should be able to see her if she's here and then were like oh duh, phones exist. Sorry :\

Also re: buffalo burgers, ponzu is not essential but some kind of marinade addition really helps with keeping it from drying out. And yes, cook for much less than you'd do a regular burger, aim for a time that would make a regular burger much rarer than you'd like, and that will be when the buffalo is done. Tom suggests using a toothpick and inserting into center of patty. If toothpick comes out warm you're good. Not sure what this means but I guess it worked for him. I think he cooked them for maybe 10 minutes max total when he made them.

OHHH and I found a rabbit guy, he said in like two weeks he'll have killed more bunnies for people to eat!

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Sunday, 14 May 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

uh guys Tom is wearing like 17 band aids right now all over his hands. Fresh Salsa and Mojitos, a Film by Sam Peckinpah. I'm terrified that by the end of the dinner cooking experience my husband is going to have no hands.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Sunday, 14 May 2006 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

massive blood loss aside, a rainy-ass Sunday doesn't get much better than watching a Metro maintenance truck collide with a police car and then flippin' on Mythbusters with big helpings of aperitifs described above. BTW WTF is a "Metro maintenance worker" doing on the tracks of the red line at 10:15 on a Sunday? Shenanigans. Fatal shenanigans.

Also dudes, for future reference, being forced to substitute Perrier for the usual soda water makes for a REALLY TASTY Mojito! Thank you CVS for your extremely limited mixer selection.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Sunday, 14 May 2006 19:14 (nineteen years ago)

    happy birthday ally!

what is ponzu? I had a buffalo burger today as well. (before I read this. it just seemed like a good idea.) I had no idea how to cook it plus was feeling lazy/slightly hung over so I just put it on the foreman grill randomly found in the cabinet, I have never used one before. pretty good.

those law enforcement convention people are all over, I was trying to get on the mass ave/3rd st tunnel yesterday to 395 and there were cops everywhere. they all look exactly the same. khaki shorts, white sneakers, polo shirt, very short hair/near buzz cut. it was kind of scary.

    dar1a g (daria g), Sunday, 14 May 2006 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

I drove to market (as is my lazy ass custom), noticed that there were a bunch of cops around, but thought "oh just here for the convention etc. etc." until I saw there was yellow police tape all over the north metro entrance. For some reason I figured there was some sort of emergency station closing for maintenence or something--bummer to hear that someone was hit.

Honestly this weekend I wish I'd had a camera phone because I was rather amazed at the diversity of cop uniformage on display. Last night on the Metro there were at least three different fancy-dress uniforms in our car alone, and I saw another half a dozen or so different regular uniforms, including one rather unfortunate combination of brown pants with mustard stripes down the side, paired with lemon yellow safari-type shirt. Bad choice, copper dudes. I did not see a single chick in uniform, but plenty of wifey types wearing "support our law enforcement officers" T-shirts with eagles and american flags and crap on them. I think all of this would have made for great Post fashion column fodder.

But yeah, lots and lots and lots of buzz cuts.

dude, yeah they are. I was actually visiting my grandmother last month and we looked through some old photos of her husband, my grandfather, who was cop in Philly. He was either a stone, dead-eyed scary man in the pictures, or a smiling, laughing, joking around dude. My grandmother said "Well, he was a cop. They kind of know how to be intimidating."

I saw some dudes in non-DC uniform today with ponchos on that had holes in the side for their GIANT guns. Maybe not Dirty Harry, but jeebus. And they were nice as can be when I asked them to stand to the right on the way down the escalator - FUCKING TOURIST COPS!

OK after a half-ass survey I have come to the opinion that Tuesday would be the best day for a standing DCFAP type thing. I now present the issue for public comment (particularly WHERE such a thing would happen). There must be someplace with killer happy hour specials (AHEM BRIAN) that we have not yet considered???

quincie (quincie), Monday, 15 May 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

I am in favor of a standing DC FAP on Tuesdays. My opinion only matters for the next two Tuesdays, of course - after that, I will be an former-DCer.

Big Loud Ape Mountain (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Monday, 15 May 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

BLAM I was disappointed not to see you Saturday because I don't think we've actually met IRL??? But your falling asleep on the metro tale cracked me up. So your presence on this and as many subsequent Tuesdays as possible is a must! You can tell me about THE LAW.

Where do the LAWYERS all hang out in DC? Let's NOT GO THERE

    Happy hour possibilities:

    Biddy Mulligan's
+ located on Dupont Circle, decent bar food, Irish waitstaff
    - beers are a bit pricey
    Teh Big Hutn
+ located near Dupont Circle, happy hour specials, decent food, punk rock waitstaff
    - limited seating options for more than 4 people, kind of grody
    Porter's (19th between M and N)
    + convenient location, drink specials
    - sports bar, haven't been yet
    The Brickskeller
    + beer
    - service
    Lindy's Red Lion (20th & Penn)

    - GW students
    Science Club
+ classy place, good service, good music
    - classy place, pricey
    Circle Bistro
+ half price happy hour until 8pm, good food
    - in a restaurant, too expensive after 8pm
    Elephant & Castle (12th & Penn)

    - location appeals only to TOMBOT, service can be bad
    The Eagle
    + great beer specials
    - gay leather bar may not be great meeting place

teh Bigg Hunte has live Jimmy Cliff on the jukebox. or it did 5 years ago, at least, before I woke up to find that Presidetn Gore had solved global warming with the assistance of arctic monkeys.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 15 May 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

dude Science Club was anything but classy the last time we were there, in the downstairs portion. Slow motherfucker tending bar and seriously douchey gaggle of law student Bitches (cap B) with their bags and coats strewn over half the room, standing around being LOUDLY STUPID and mostly dressed like they were in the really disgusting part of their life cycle between making bad decisions at H&M/Urban Outfitters and making bad decisions at Nordstrom's/Ann Taylor. Wha-ugh.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Monday, 15 May 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

    Biddy Mulligan's
    - celtic music? Because the stuff makes me seize, I swear

    Big Hunt
+ better seating options in that other room???

    Porter's
    + we should investigate

    The Brickskeller
NO! I pledge allegiance to Beeradiso on this one (too bad not so conveniently located--but such good beer! so reasonably priced on Tuesdays! good food!)

    Lindy's Red Lion
+ maybe not so many GW students in the summer?

    Science Club
    - i've already blown my portion of our tax return; cheapness is U&K

    Circle Bistro
    - see above

    Elephant & Castle
+ i am intrigued but must consult a map. What metro station?

    The Eagle
    +++++++++ gay leather bar!

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Monday, 15 May 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

Porter's is usually really loud. I vote quieter.

I am past that stage, Tom. I tend to take good care to keep my stuff in one place, I am frequently loudly BRILLIANT, and I don't own anything from H&M.

Adams Morgan is typically pretty good on Tuesdays. OR what about Aroma in Cleveland Park? Usually pretty chill on Tuesdays, and they have that great back lounge area.

Totally off topic - Despite my being unemployed as of two weeks from now, moments like this give me hope:

Boss [20+ years practicing law] - So, I'm not sure I follow you on (point of law), and I'm not sure if what you're talking about deals with my question.

Me [just finished my last law school final on Friday] - Well, I'm sure that it does. (point of law, backed up by understanding of the construction of the statute that deals with it, and subsequent revisions of that statute) is EXACTLY what you're talking about because (reasons 1-10). Here, let me show you.

[15 minutes of Westlaw proof shoved in his grill]

Boss - Hm. All good points. Let me know what else you find.

    dar1a g (daria g), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

Penn Ave SE by day is a pleasing, if mild, mix of Parisian (well, ok, not architecturally) and raffish. By night it is excellent for encountering the North American Frattus Boyus, which flies here from all over the country, but there are few other attractions. The block or two just to the East of Hart SOB/Scotus, East Capitol St, and Lincoln Park can be very nice in late afternoon, and early evening, but the spooky desertion of residential streets cuts both ways after dark. Nice to have a friend there with a house/backyard/alley.

I believe P. Kennedy spent his fateful evening at the Hawk 'n Dove, which has lots less personality than the Tune Inn.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

In my day, the chief watering holes of the migratory fratboy were PourHouse and Politiki? Was it Hawk 'n Dove that had the attractive outdoor seating? Tune Inn was the dive.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

Some of the Penn bars are okay, but mostly in the afternoons when they offer a good mix of barflies. By night, though, they're generally full of Hillbots yowling at each other about what "my member" said/did today. Even the Tune Inn is not immune.

I get the impression "Soussi" is a last name you run into a lot in N Africa, so the place might be named after the owner or his granddad/uncle/mistress or something.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Thursday, 18 May 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

I don't feel bad about showing up at my job, we don't do anything evil around here.

I have a colleague who seemingly NEVER lets me finish a sentence, is ALWAYS interrupting and cutting me off whenever there is a conversation, and I am really getting to this seething with rage point about it. WHY WHY WHY. I'm about to break something here

    dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 18 May 2006 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

I think we could all use a little Taco Bar right about now.

quincie (quincie), Thursday, 18 May 2006 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

dar1a, there are two established strategies for this.

    1) Passive-aggressive: Stare blankly while you wait for his interruption to finish, pause, and say, "As I was trying to say....."
    2) Effective: Every time you see him, tell him the interrupting cow knock-knock joke.

    Stephen X (Stephen X), Thursday, 18 May 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

Quincie you should use your new executive powers to declare war on the Taco Bar and refuse to let your boss return until terms have been negotiated.

My boss returned and informed me that one does not eat tacos at the Taco Bar, one eats pork quesadillas.

Meanwhile, I am now on a quest for information about another foodstuff. I was just reading an interview with Jane and Michael Stern on Salon and came across this:

"Today, though the two are still tireless explorers, ready to brave the icy stares of locals crowding Maryland's dive bars (the only place to find the state's signature "stuffed ham"). . .

WTF is stuffed ham? Is anyone else aware that this is a Maryland signature? UMD grads (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE) better start doing some explaining!

I am ready to kill myself and eat my dog (teenagequiet), Thursday, 18 May 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

OK I'm not even sure a whole bunch of weed would make this appetizing:

St. Mary's County Stuffed Ham is still a strictly local food - unknown outside of southern Maryland. Stuffed ham came about when some thrifty cook decided to stuff some greens in the cavity that was left when the ham bone was removed from a ham hock. The greens - usually kale - are chopped and mixed with spices, and then the stuffed ham is cooked. After it is cooked, when it is sliced, there is a center of greens in each slice

quincie (quincie), Thursday, 18 May 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

I like kale with some pork fat, but inside a ham? No thanks. Although I'm sure if someone put it in front of me I would eat it just out of curiosity.

Oh I don't gamble so I'm just refusing to get involved in that. But I haven't got a problem with having a cocktail esp since I really don't think I'll be taking part in the bachelorette party I was supposed to do Friday nite (we're arriving basically as they'll be heading to the club, I'll be at least an hour late to a ginormous huge old school style dance skyscraper)

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Thursday, 18 May 2006 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

i cant go either, mookie - im at the baseball game/gf party!

    sonned by a cheeky percussionist

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

ok well it started out innocuously annoying enough, just two dumbass German tourists standing on the way of the escalator. Who apparently could not understand any permeation of "Excuse me" "Pardon me" "MOVE YOUR BLEACHED BLONDE ASS" etc etc. OK whatever. But then at the top of the escalator they proceed to STOP AND TAKE OUT THEIR MAP AND DISCUSS THEIR NEXT MOVE (keep in mind it's like 9:15 right now, at Metrocenter). They are literally two inches from the top of the escalator. It is impossible to get past them. They kind of get crowded and tossed around so they move up slowly, being all like "Oh so sorry ha ha ha" to every dude who basically shoves them. Then this old black lady goes to pass and they just won't move, so she finally yells "PPL ARE TRYING TO GO TO WORK, GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE" and they start saying some REALLY AWFUL RACIST SHIT IN GERMAN. I'm right behind them so I repeat "PPL ARE TRYING TO GO TO WORK, GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE" except I also threw in "cunts" and said it to them in German and they get all horrified and start doing the "oh so sorry" act again. So I called them Nazis, asked them why they were nice to white ppl but rude to this poor old lady, and ended up SHOVING one of the bitches to the ground because they were all uppity about being told off about their racism.

Then I bust out laughing and yelled "PLOTZ" at her which is the german command to tell a dog to sit and stay and then old lady and I "ran" out of the metro.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

Quincie you can tell me what I need to do to protect tomato plants against KILLER BIRDS. We finally planted some in window boxes on the fire escape and now there are some giant magpie-looking motherfuckers eyeballing our plants all day. Do I need a shotgun? Some DEET?

    Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 19 May 2006 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

Hi Mary! You've been so scarce this week :(

Tonight will be halibut and six feet under. Tomorrow I need to build a deer fence and get my tomatoes and peppers in the ground. Also pick up dry cleaning and go to wedding.

Sunday: farmer's market, Hirschhorn, friends over for dinner.

    Es tu?

xpost to Stephen: I've not had bird problems with the tomatoes, only rat problems. I think it is better when you are surrounded by other people growing stuff because then you are not the sole target. But yeah, gun sounds like a good idea. Take care of the birds and then come take care of my deer with entitlement issues!

    This weekend:

    1. Put up with houseguests, since it's a weekend after March and before August.
    2. Maybe Black Maria film fest tonight.
    3. Because for some fool reason we're going to Alaska next weekend, go to REI for overpriced socks campstove bear repellent.

Oh man, now I'm aching to set up my awesomely awesome Walrus tent. Maybe I'll pitch it in my garden plot and sleep in there some night!

Places I've camped you really only a rope, a rock, a tree with a sturdy branch at the perfect height, and a food bag. And a really good pitching arm, which means it usually takes me a good forty minutes to get my food strung up.

xpost Brian I am afraid to click that? It this going to shatter everything I think I know about Hunter?

Oh damn I probably missed you, Mary! But Wintergreen plaza has lots of stuff, including a Ten Ren (sp?) for teas. Further north there are two asian grocery stores, a crazy japanese snack store (I forget the name), and the wonderful Bob's Noodle (Tawainese) all in a group more or less at the intersection of 355 and I think Washington? And Pete is totally OTM about Joe's and A&J--I'm kinda meh on Vegetable Garden (although it is located next to Gregggggg at PR&Parners if you need a haircut) and I haven't been to the other two he mentioned.

China Canteen on 355 just before Gude is great for Szechuan (as is Joe's), but I wouldn't recommend it unless one is in the company of a skilled translator or you will be eating egg rolls and hot and sour soup against your will. I also love Michael Noodle and the adjacent Asian grocer and bubble tea cafe in Travilah (sp?) Square on Darnestown road, less than a mile from the Shady Grove intersection. Also somewhere on Travilah road is Shanghai Cafe, which has great Shanghai (duh) specialties, including wonderful eggplant in garlic sauce.

Great, now I'm starving! Seriously, if anyone finds themselves up that way during the week let me know and we can have totally worthwhile culinary adventures--it's one of the few things that makes working in the 'burbs tolerable!

OK also this: SilverDocs preview party on Weds at Cue Bar (anyone been to this place AHEM BRIAN?) 6:30-9:00--trailers and "fabulous drink specials" promised. I feel that if I see some trailers I can make better decisions and actually make it out to more stuff this year.

quincie (quincie), Sunday, 21 May 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks all. I went to Taiga Japanese bookstore, which was disappointingly meager--in the Talbott Center. Then I pulled into a plaza that had a Shiseido and looked promising, but it had nothing besides a Sam Woo Korean restaurant that looked good, so I pulled back out. I then went to the Ten Ren Tea, which was as fine as expected, though housed in a curious strip--which seemed to include a fetish store. Ten Ren Tea is surprisingly about half as cheap for bubble tea than the non chain places in Annandale. Then I went to Joe's Noodles, which was great--loved the pink walls. I wanted to go Aji Ichiban--probably the treats place you mention, but couldn't find it and headed back home. It was hard to drive the Pike and also scout for places at the same time. Mapquest made me do this confusing thing where I got onto 270 then took a couple rights and lefts and then ended up on the Pike--whereas I think I could have just stayed on 495 for a Pike exit? I want to further explore Rockville and Bethesda (has anyone been to Japanese grocer Daruma?) and Silver Spring. The places I saw in Rockville weren't half as bustling as the Annandale or Seven Corner Asian "Supernodes." Am I missing something, or is Rockville just a sleepier kind of place?

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 21 May 2006 19:14 (nineteen years ago)

Q, Cue Bar is kind of a dressed up pool hall, but really only dressed up by pool hall standards (new, color coordinated). They have a big projection screen with some seats around it but if it gets a decent crowd it'll be hard to find a good place to watch. They also have a ping pong table.

Daruma.. Japanese grocery? neat! I want to cook more Japanese food. Specifically, I would like some okonomiyaki. Is there a restaurant that serves that around here?

    dar1a g (daria g), Sunday, 21 May 2006 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

The ping-pong table kind of curdled my goodwill toward Cue Bar--it made it seem a little too rec-room like, which is dangerous considering how close that place is to the Ellington.

And let me assure you that nothing smells quite like old camping gear that's been in a basement for a couple of years--if Miss Havisham hiked, I think I know what her gaiters would smell like. Quincie, after an inventory I've discovered we still have urgent gear needs! Can I take you up on your kind offer and rummage through your equipment locker?

    Stephen X (Stephen X), Sunday, 21 May 2006 22:13 (nineteen years ago)

hey baby--can i rummage through your equipment locker?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Sunday, 21 May 2006 22:21 (nineteen years ago)

I love okonomiyaki. I know a couple restaurants in NY that serve it (including Hiroshima-style--with noodles inside) but I haven't seen it around here. If I had to take a guess, I would say the best bets would be Tako Grill in Bethesda (I just checked their menu and it's not on it, but maybe they make it) or Blue Ocean in Fairfax (can't find an on-line menu for them). Next time I'm near there I'll see if I can check their menu.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 21 May 2006 23:01 (nineteen years ago)

Can I take you up on your kind offer and rummage through your equipment locker?

Of course! I have both internal and external frame backpacks, a pretty bomb-proof (or at least driving rain-proof) 2 (big)- to 3 (smaller)-person tent, reliable camp stove, H20 purifier, and probably some other stuff--oh yeah a -20 sleeping bag that may or may not be sufficient for Alaska (I tend to add 20 degrees to all of those temp. ratings, but this one earned Backpacker Mag's approval and has kept me warm in chilly Adirondack springs). I've not made good use of any of it for a couple of years, but it has been well stored and smells OK!

I wanted to go Aji Ichiban--probably the treats place you mentioned

Yep, that's the one. It is in a strip mall curiously oriented perpendicular to the Pike, so pretty much impossible to spot from the road. I'll draw you a map the next time I see you! They have at least a dozen varieties of salty plums, so I think it is worth the trip.

Not that I like salty plums. I just like to know I have a broad choice should I decide I need some.

Anyone else interested in doing Cue Bar on Wednesday in lieu of standing Tuesday??? I need to do some doc research!

Daruma is teeny-tiny--I think your Japanese yen would be better served elsewhere.

quincie (quincie), Monday, 22 May 2006 00:22 (nineteen years ago)

There is a Japanese restaurant here on the Hill, I wonder if they have it. I should ask them.. I got a very good chirashi salad from there last week. But perhaps the way to go is to a Japanese grocery and find a mix? we should have a party and make lots of it. maybe I could also find different types of furikake seasoning & more styrofoam flavor snacks

there is a Japanese/Filipino grocery right up the street from where you live, quincie, maybe they have okonomiyaki mix?

If you do go, which is highly unnecessary, do not stay at the Luxor or probably any of the themey looking ones. Luxor was crap, Excaliber was utterly terrifying inside, I refused to even set foot in NY NY, etc. MGM Grand was nice. Our friends all stayed at the Bellagio which they said was nice but it should be for that much money a room.

learning "ultimate hacking" from a megacorp who just released an anti-virus update that eats windows .dlls and breaks all your shit!! Classic!! I am still recovering from LV so it is good that they have hour lunchbreak and a machine where I hit the coke can and coke comes out without me having to put any money in it.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Monday, 22 May 2006 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

I can't even get coffee today because all I have is a $100 bill and I'm not asking that poor Korean dude to break a $100 over a $1 cup of coffee. Fuck that coke machine.

Thats like some fantasyland shit or something.

Did anyone see Ice-T on Cribs? He was AWESOME. Apart from his being one of my favorite rappers ever, he had a soda machine and a snack machine in his house. The reason? So that when his friends come over, they don't eat his food - go get it yourself from the machine, yo. I will add this to the things to be purchased for my mansion.

Are you returning from somewhere exciting?

quincie (quincie), Monday, 22 May 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

Another NY design show daytrip. I made extra sure to be the first one out of the train and to the cab stand but there were like 1000x people waiting, including a bunch of teens coming from thair romanticated Union Station prom. Ugh.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Monday, 22 May 2006 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

wait brian - did you post this morning from NY?

SQUARECOATS (plsmith), Monday, 22 May 2006 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

Nah bruv, I got back late Saturday night.

Also, even if it seems like a good idea at the time, do not listen to Steve Reich's Different Trains while riding Amtrak. It is way too depressing once it gets to the second movement.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Monday, 22 May 2006 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

Guys yesterday I had breakfast at Florida Avenue Grill and dinner at 2 Amys, and now I think olive oil and lard are waging a war for possession of my bloodstream. Maybe I'll have a salad for lunch.

If I hadn't decamped for the metro I probably would have just now gotten a cab.

The Washington Business Journal referred to the Popeye's and the Kung Fu store at 10th and F as "less desirable tenants" in a story about some new Douglas Jemal office buildings. WTF?

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Monday, 22 May 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

What kind of assholes hate Popeye's?

OK how do I go about securing the letters that make up that sign? Seriously, at the very least I really, really want the retro "G" from the ghetto giant near my place--the building is being completely redone in the next year or so and surely they will not have use for the sign letters any more. So do I just chat up construction dudes or e-mail the vice president of giant or something?

quincie (quincie), Monday, 22 May 2006 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

Oh and Stephen that American Gentrifiers mag cover on that other thread was roffle-worthy!

quincie (quincie), Monday, 22 May 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

Round-the-clock watchfulness. When the Church of the Rapture took down their awesome heaven-and-hell sign, it was headed for the dumpster 'til some Saint-Exers jumped up from their tables and grabbed it.

I love that GIANT FOOD sign. It makes me think they sell peas the size of basketballs.

    Stephen X (Stephen X), Monday, 22 May 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

Q, maybe get the name of the construction company (should be posted) and call and ask for the project manager and ask what they're planning on doing with the sign. Or you may have better luck when they're working - ask for the site superintendent.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Monday, 22 May 2006 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

quincie asking in person will increase odds of procuring the G

SQUARECOATS (plsmith), Monday, 22 May 2006 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

I'd love that ghetto giant if it didn't suck such ass. Like I'd appreciate it for being the ghetto grocery it is if it weren't MY ghetto grocery!

xpost I shall do that! Mr. Q does not think he wants to share a tiny apartment with a large 'G,' but gave me his blessing to go ahead and try because he is certain I will fail. I WILL SHOW YOU MR. I-WILL-DIVORCE-YOU-IF-YOU-BUY-A-ROOMBA DUDE.
