The other thread had been getting way, way too big for way, way too long. So here we go!

cws (cws), Sunday, 28 May 2006 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

I'm listening to the final official podcast right now. It's Saturday and it's raining here in Portland and yet I still feel like I'm wasting a weekend listening to a PODCAST about a TELEVISION SHOW. And yet my dorkiness is assuaged a bit as I feel sentimental.

ONWARDS!

cws (cws), Sunday, 28 May 2006 00:15 (nineteen years ago)

For anyone who's interested in a summary of information about what we can expect in season three, click here for a post collating information from podcasts, interviews, etc. I haven't included the details here in case people may regard them as spoilers. That said, if we can't discuss them, we ain't going to have much to talk about on this thread.

pleased to mitya (mitya), Sunday, 28 May 2006 00:27 (nineteen years ago)

AHHHH I was really hoping we'd avoid this ridiculous long thread title for future Lost threads!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 28 May 2006 00:42 (nineteen years ago)

Do we have a season 3 start date? Even a rough one? August? September?

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 28 May 2006 00:46 (nineteen years ago)

I love the long title thing, it helps me find the thread after Lost when I'm stoned. It also lets me know what one to avoid before I've seen it!

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Sunday, 28 May 2006 00:49 (nineteen years ago)

The first part of season 3 will begin to air in early October.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 28 May 2006 00:52 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, actually, according to Lindelof - season 3 starts at the end of September, running for six episodes with a cliffhanger, then back for 16 consecutive episodes starting in February.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 28 May 2006 00:58 (nineteen years ago)

6 + 16 = 22. There's 2 (or 3) missing....

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 28 May 2006 01:22 (nineteen years ago)

Double episodes, man.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 28 May 2006 02:02 (nineteen years ago)

three months, six epidodes, three more months, sixteen episodes. i know i'll probably appreciate it in the long run but right now it seems like two hellish summers in a row.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Sunday, 28 May 2006 06:22 (nineteen years ago)

anyone got a rundown on what we've learned from the alternative reality game thus far? ten we can like keep up with it over the summer via this thread? cuz i dont really wanna visit 3243t5ew websites and ill do what i can to help as well. thanks!

luv,
chaik

chaki (chaki), Sunday, 28 May 2006 08:16 (nineteen years ago)

I just realised something....Michael and Walt have left without Vincent!

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 28 May 2006 10:02 (nineteen years ago)

that was the first thing my girlfriend said. "what about the freaking dog?"

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Sunday, 28 May 2006 10:27 (nineteen years ago)

I can't wait to see the arctic Matthew Fox lookalike again next season. I somehow doubt that their resemblance was unintentional.

hellsarse (hellsarse), Sunday, 28 May 2006 11:10 (nineteen years ago)

According to Carlton and Damon on the podcast, the resemblence was entirely UNintentional.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 28 May 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

Okay. I'm willing to give the good people at Lost the benefit of the doubt for the time being. But, having just watched the entire series for the first time over the course of the last two weeks, the season 2 finale marks the first time that I'm really dubious about the course of the show. Watching the show as one long and relatively uninterupted narrative made it seem pretty clear that, with a few exceptions, a lot of the story was pretty thoroughly mapped out beforehand. It's the big "reveals" about the hatch and the button that I'm having trouble with.

For one thing: judging by the reactions in the other thread, I'm not the only one who has no clear idea about what the failsafe was meant to achieve. The bigger problem, though, is reconciling Desmond's involvement with the plane crash. I would like to believe that this is intentional misdirection on the part of the writers, or that something else is involved, at the very least. Because that one fact, if true, would undermine one of the main conceits of the show (the idea that there was a plan to bring these people to the island). Has anyone come up with a theory that would integrate Desmond's involvement with what we knew before? Preferably one that isn't overly-convoluted or super reliant on coincidence (something about the idea of Kelvin manipulating Desmond into leaving the hatch at just the right moment and staying out for just the right amount of time doesn't sit well with me).

Also: I haven't seen this idea bandied around anywhere else, so I'll offer it up here. Everyone seems caught up on the idea of "good people" and "bad people" in terms of morality, but I'm beginning to think that this might be linguistic misdirection (a la the Black Rock). Maybe we should be thinking of "good" and "bad" more in terms of...I don't know, selecting fruit at the market. The good people are the ones that fulfill whatever criteria that made the Others/Hanso/whoever want to bring them to the island and perform their wacky experiments on them. The bad people are the extraneous survivors that don't have any utility w/r/t the Big Plan. I don't know that this idea has any merit, but it's worth considering. And I can't think of anything that refutes it.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 28 May 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

Because that one fact, if true, would undermine one of the main conceits of the show (the idea that there was a plan to bring these people to the island).

That's never actually been stated on the show - just lots of audience theorising. Maybe it just seems that way because of a sort of anthropic principle?

theantmustdance (theantmustdance), Sunday, 28 May 2006 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

Okay rundown on the ARG stuff:

The Hanso Foundation was order to cease activity in an African nation and open their labs to investigators regarding the outbreak of a meningococcal virus that had been transferred from primates to humans. Apparently, the foundation manage to spook the investigators, because they quickly sent out a letter retracting these demands.

Alvar Hanso has not been seen in public since 2002.

Thomas Werner Mittelwerk, one of the executives of the Hanso Foundation, never attended Caltech and is not actually a doctor, despite the claims in his website bio.

Hugh McIntyre, another Hanso exec, claims to be dedicated to "family values." There is evidence he is involved in a very expensive affair with a British woman.

Peter Thompson, the final Hanso exec, was a corporate lawyer fighting against claims filed by cancer victims in cases related to tobacco, nuclear power plants, and waste dumping in rivers. He then came down with cancer himself and went to work for the Hanso Foundation. Additionally, Peter Thompson signatures on various documents related to the Hanso Foundation do not match.

Finally, two of the Board of Directors were arrested for corporate corruption-y things in the late '80s, sentenced to rather long prison terms, and got out in a matter of months thanks to Peter Thompson.

So in short, Hanso may be missing and everyone else involved with the Foundation is extremely corrupt. All the information from the game doesn't seem to have too much to do with the show's storylines right now, but I feel like all this corruption might relate to the Others' motives, whatever they are.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Sunday, 28 May 2006 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

"Do not mistake coincidence for fate" may be the most important quote from this season!

But yes, I think there's probably a middle ground between the specific reason for the plane crash, and the reason why some of those people were on the flight that came to the island.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 28 May 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

Interesting stuff in the link mitya posted above. The interview with Michael Emerson seems to suggest Henry got himself captured on purpose, in order to set up the plan with Michael and kidnap Jack, Kate and Sawyer.

Anyone got any idea why they didn't keep Hurley despite his name being on the original list?

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 28 May 2006 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

The good people are the ones that fulfill whatever criteria that made the Others/Hanso/whoever want to bring them to the island and perform their wacky experiments on them.

The main problem with this idea is that it doesn't jibe with Henry's comments to Ana-Lucia to the effect that could change and become good (remember, he said Goodwin believed this). I wouldn't say it's impossible -- exactly what "good" means in the context of the Others totally unclear to me -- but it seems unlikely. And somehow Henry's comment to Michael at the end ("We're the good guys") reinforces this for me.

I think that these issues will get much clearer when we find out what happened to the people who were stolen/vanished from the camps.

pleased to mitya (mitya), Sunday, 28 May 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone got any idea why they didn't keep Hurley despite his name being on the original list?

Presumably to pass the message on to the other survivors to leave them alone, and not try to rescue them.

dmun drive-in (dmun), Sunday, 28 May 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, the meaning of "good" and "bad" is going to depend on what these people are being used for. If it's some sort of social or behavioral experiment, the Others probably are more interested in good/bad in moral terms. We shall see.

P.S. For those who haven't had a chance to peruse the supposedly important comic that Walt was reading in season 1, here it is.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 28 May 2006 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

I really really really don't think Gale's group has anything to do with behavior experiments - that's a Dharma thing, and it's increasingly clear that they've got something to do with Hanso and nothing to do with Dharma.

And yes, Hurley's role was to be the town crier who stumbles back into the camp and tells them never to go after them. Only, it is almost definitely not going to play out that way - I'm sure by episode 4 of the third season, Hurley will either find himself meeting people we've never seen before or, more likely, hooking up with Sayid, Jin, and Sun.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 28 May 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

One thing to consider is that Gale and his group have been there for some time and are some sort of resistence. They may want Jack, Kate, and Sawyer as recruits for their cause. Other characters may have been deemed unfit for their purposes - it's fairly obvious why Gale would not want Sayid, and Locke and Eko may be considered too loopy.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 28 May 2006 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

i suppose it's still possible that desmond didn't actually make the plane crash. and that someone else on the island did. this might be kinda crazy though. on the other hand, i've heard crazier.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 28 May 2006 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

I think the thing of it will probably be that Desmond inadvertantly crashed the plane, but that had nothing to do with why that particular group of passengers were gathered together. There's always the possibility that they were intercepted on their way to another destination other than Los Angeles.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 28 May 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

As in, the pilot's story about losing communications and going off course was a lie -- he was hijacking them to a third destination (neither LA nor the island). But they just happened to fly w/in range of the Dharma island? THAT seems far-fetched.

pleased to mitya (mitya), Sunday, 28 May 2006 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

I really really really don't think Gale's group has anything to do with behavior experiments - that's a Dharma thing, and it's increasingly clear that they've got something to do with Hanso and nothing to do with Dharma.

Is it clear, though? And if it has been made clear, is it because of the Lost Experience stuff? Granted, I kind of took in the whole series in one big rush, so some of the more subtle stuff may have been lost on me, but I don't remember anything in the series proper thus far that has made a firm distinction between Hanso/Dharma/the Others.

Which is not to say that I think you're wrong. I'm just curious about how you came to that conclusion. Getting a handle on the distinction between the various factions is going to be key to figuring out what the eff is going on with this show.

Cursory stab in the dark theory, based on nothing but the show itself: Dharma set the wheels in motion, Hanso engineered a hostile takeover, some of the technology and experiments got loose, Hanso's people (the Others) are trying to re-harness the stuff that they don't have control over and something about the Oceanic survivors (or some of them, anyway...the "good" ones) is supposedly going to help them achieve that end. The main goal: getting people with extraordinary willpower or "psychic abilities" or somesuch to control the nanoswarm (which may have taken the form of some sort of plague at some point). Like Eko's standoff with the smartsmoke times ten.

I'm completely pulling this out of my ass.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 28 May 2006 19:14 (nineteen years ago)

Alternate theory: the plague was an actual, for-real plague that got fixed up by the nanos (like they fixed Locke's legs, Rose's sickness, and probably most of the major injuries from the crash).

Alternate alternate theory: the plague was total B.S. from day one.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 28 May 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

I'm glad Perpetua brought up that Eko quote, because i've wondered for a while whether Dharma/Hanso/whoever had discovered a way to manipulate fate or luck. That way things like the plane crash could be explained by both (proximally) Desmond's failure to push the button and (distally) those unknown agents mucking around with fate and chance.
Plus it ties in with a lot of other stuff like Jack being the guy who supposedly takes charge of his own fate and the "God can't see you here" line.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Sunday, 28 May 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

Not to mention the numbers and Hurley, obviously.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Sunday, 28 May 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

I'm really curious how they're going to deal with Locke&Eko and the whole "faith" thing. Faith is a sort've concept that no one wants to cast in a negative light. It would turn audiences off if, in the end, faith wasn't rewarded. But when Locke or Eko have faith in the hatch or faith in the button, what exactly are they having faith in? Not God; at least not in an immediate sense. And when faith isn't being held in God it becomes even more of a blatantly stupid idea than it already inherently is! Faith in chance? Faith in doing what you're told even if it doesn't make any sense?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Sunday, 28 May 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

Deric, Damon and Carlton have shot down nanos at every opportunity.

The faith thing seems very complicated now - one of the major things from the finale that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere is that Eko's visions were RIGHT. So does this mean we should always trust Eko? Or has someone or something been leading Eko along?

Okay. So who are the people who have met the "monster" head on? Eko and Locke. Who were the people who felt most compelled by "destiny" to work in the hatch after their confrontation with the "monster"? Eko and Locke. Who was being told by "visions" to go to places and do things after meeting the "monster"? Where did they both meet the monster? Near the question mark and the Nigerian plane.

I am certain that the other time we've seen the "monster" but didn't know it was when we saw "Yemi" contacting Locke and Eko in "?" Why Yemi? Because it scanned Eko's memories, and we saw that when the "monster" passed over him in "The 23rd Psalm."

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 28 May 2006 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

the religious/mystical/faith-based elements of lost are probably my least favorite parts. but that's just me. and if everything is being caused by shadowy organizations and geological phenomena, i don't know why i have to care about it much in the first place. i understand that it means something to the characters though. which is why the sooner thay find out that it's just a hologram and a wind machine chasing them thru the woods and not the devil the better. or something like that. i'm a horror movie fan though. i want their faith to be blown out of the water.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 28 May 2006 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

i just think that everyone on the island is psychic to some degree.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 28 May 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

or the island makes them psychic. one or the other. rose "knowing" that bernard is alive. stuff like that.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 28 May 2006 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

As in, the pilot's story about losing communications and going off course was a lie -- he was hijacking them to a third destination (neither LA nor the island). But they just happened to fly w/in range of the Dharma island? THAT seems far-fetched.

-- pleased to mitya (mitya_il...), May 28th, 2006.

Why would the pilot have to know anything? If they were being pulled deliberately to the island, he probably wouldn't be in the know about that, right?

I have no clue where they might be going with this particular story thread, but I think that there's something more going on, and it's probably not super complicated.

Deric, what have Gale's group ever done to suggest that they have any connection to Dharma? Nothing. Nothing at all whatsoever. Except for use some commandeered Dharma stuff, which is exactly what the castaways have done for themselves. We know that they have something to do with Hanso - Tom Friendly has quoted Alvar Hanso. I think we've been led to conflate Dharma, Hanso, and Widmore all along so that they can BLOW OUR MINDS with the reveals over the course of season 3 that there are actually competing interests at play on this island, and there's probably even more than that.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 28 May 2006 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

Also, it's rather suspect that Gale was the guy who convinced John Locke to stop hitting the button. Why would he want that? I think he knew exactly what would happen if the button wasn't pushed, but didn't want to be there when it happened.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 28 May 2006 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

Why would the pilot have to know anything? If they were being pulled deliberately to the island, he probably wouldn't be in the know about that, right?

Did I misunderstand your original theory?

There's always the possibility that they were intercepted on their way to another destination other than Los Angeles.

The people are collected onto a plane bound for LA. The "interception" would be the island. How else would you involve a destination other than LA?

pleased to mitya (mitya), Sunday, 28 May 2006 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

I am certain that the other time we've seen the "monster" but didn't know it was when we saw "Yemi" contacting Locke and Eko in "?" Why Yemi? Because it scanned Eko's memories, and we saw that when the "monster" passed over him in "The 23rd Psalm."

I've been trying to suss out what they meant by this in the podcast ever since listening to it, but I've got to say this is almost certainly it. Great job, Matthew.

cws (cws), Sunday, 28 May 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

this could be a bit far fetched, but taking on the electromagnetic bizness they're grabbing at, it occured to me that it's possible that the survivors may all (always) have functioned as sort of divining rods aiming at the island. this could explain why there has always been a similar magnetism that's drawn them all together (presumably) throughout their lives. perhaps dharma/hanso/widmore had some way of finding people with whatever electromagnetic properties might be ideally suited for work/observation on the island and engineered a way to get them all there.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Sunday, 28 May 2006 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

Great job, Matthew.

Again. I'm starting to think Matthew is dating someone on the production team or something.

pleased to mitya (mitya), Sunday, 28 May 2006 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

Nah, he's just really good at figuring this shit out.

Man, if they're seriously denying the whole nanos thing, I don't have a clue. I mean...it's gotta be something with similar properties or something supernatural. I'm definitely leaning towards the former. Or is it a mixture of the two? Mysteries abound.

Deric, what have Gale's group ever done to suggest that they have any connection to Dharma?

Nothing, once you presented the possibility. See my "cursory stab in the dark theory" above. I still stand by everything but the nanos.

But, okay: I also contend that the writers may be splitting hairs. It may not be nanos per se, but I'm willing to bet that it could be a technology that's very reminiscent of nanotech.

Am I gonna have to watch this whole thing again?

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 28 May 2006 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

Biggest clue that the Others are not part of Dharma is surely that Priest-From-Carnivale bloke called them the "Hostiles", no?

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 28 May 2006 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

For one thing: judging by the reactions in the other thread, I'm not the only one who has no clear idea about what the failsafe was meant to achieve.

the consequences of that are supposed to be explained in the next season.

i just think that everyone on the island is psychic to some degree.

that would go a long way towards explaining the "whispers" in the jungle. like why the only distinct thing heard from them just before the others went dart-crazy was "elizabeth" shortly after desmond returned to the island.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Monday, 29 May 2006 00:07 (nineteen years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 29 May 2006 00:34 (nineteen years ago)

Did anyone pick up on this yet? In the Pearl orientation video they talked about going down to Pala Ferry, and then there's a shot of it in the final scene (link). "Pala" is an island in the novel of the same name by Aldous Huxley (Wikipedia).

pleased to mitya (mitya), Monday, 29 May 2006 01:22 (nineteen years ago)

does anyone remember what the cut out portion of the film that eko had in the bible said?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 29 May 2006 01:24 (nineteen years ago)

Hey hey here's something!

Whatever caused the plane crash--there still remains the fact that there was a conspicuous lack of injuries, etc. from the crash--Sayid points this out sometime in season 1. Which I think is a decent enough reason to be suspicious of the "Desmond caused the completely random and unplanned plane crash" theory. I dunno, the more I think about it the more I feel like the whole "ZOMG LOCKE I TOOK DOWN YOUR PLANE, BROTHA" thing is a red herring.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Monday, 29 May 2006 01:29 (nineteen years ago)

The bible section of the Orientation filmstrip was just that part about not using the computer to contact the outside world (or ANYTHING BUT PUTTING IN THE BUTTON).

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Monday, 29 May 2006 01:30 (nineteen years ago)

As far as I can remember, it was the gap inbetween "do not attempt to use the computer **CUT** ..for anything". It just reiterated the whole not using the computer thing by saying something like "Do not attempt to use the computer to contact the outside world."

The scene with Locke and Eko watching this cut straight to Michael tampering with it.

Bahh, xpost!

Dan I. (Dan I.), Monday, 29 May 2006 03:08 (nineteen years ago)

I've been following the lost experience game -- as I have nothing better to do with my time -- and since we seemed to have abandoned the thread started a few weeks ago on that I'd be happy to post to this thread summarizing what has happened when something does. It seems to work mostly in bite sized pieces (and only "updates" a couple times a week) that are broken down by the various blogs dedicated to it almost instantaneously so it wouldn't be much of a problem for me to just scribble out a few words about whatever has gone on that day.

Unless someone out there would consider it "spoilery" to do that, of course.

cws (cws), Monday, 29 May 2006 03:27 (nineteen years ago)

Did they show a season 3 preview at the end of the last episode? I torrented it so I don't know.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Monday, 29 May 2006 03:42 (nineteen years ago)

Nope the sure didn't.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Monday, 29 May 2006 03:57 (nineteen years ago)

Another thing supporting my theory that Dharma and Hanso (or at least Gale's group) are competing interests - if the "monster" is in service of Dharma and guiding Eko and Locke to serve Dharma's goals with the magnetic whatever, note that the first time we see the projection of Walt, who is in the custody of Gale's group, he tells Shannon "don't push the button, the button's bad."

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 29 May 2006 05:03 (nineteen years ago)

Dan, there was no preview clip, mainly because they haven't shot any of season 3 yet. They just finished this finale episode last week, actually!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 29 May 2006 05:10 (nineteen years ago)

"don't push the button, the button's bad."

cws (cws), Monday, 29 May 2006 09:33 (nineteen years ago)

"don't push the button, the button's bad."

wasn't it actually "push the button...don't push the button bad" tho?

But then the Others seemed to feel that the survivors shouldn't have gone in 'doors they shouldn't be opening' (as Mr Friendly said). It was never quite clear that this was a direct reference to The Swan but we presume that it was, and we presume they know this just by word of mouth rather than through using The Pearl themselves.

And we see Gale tell Jon that the button doesn't seem to do anything - he's lying in order to convince Jon that the button really is a waste of time - or just to fuck with his head/make him defect? Can't see why they wouldn't want them to press the button if not doing so resulted in incidents such as that which brought the plane down.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 29 May 2006 09:56 (nineteen years ago)

wasn't it actually "push the button...don't push the button bad" tho?

I thought we all agreed it was "don't puddin' spaz"! Of course, the button's bad one makes a whole lot more sense.

Sadly, Chaki is correct about my current dating status, and how it relates to me having time to figure out Lost riddles.

From Wikipedia:

What Walt's backwards speech translates to is disputed between the possibilites of "Don't press the button, the button is bad" and "Press the button, no button's bad", although most people agree with the former.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 29 May 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

at the time, I thought it was cut out to hide the fact that the computer could be used for outside communication

but I'm not sure why he hid the film strip piece on the island instead of destroying it

Renard (Renard), Monday, 29 May 2006 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

The faith thing seems very complicated now - one of the major things from the finale that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere is that Eko's visions were RIGHT.

the way I read it is this, Locke is the man of science and Jack is the man of faith. Both of them at one time or another wanted to stop pushing the button.

Eko is a mix of the two. Not only did he believe his visions (faith), he also observed (science) that there was a huge friggin' magnet in the hatch, as shown by his demo with the belt buckle (and earlier when his CROSS was attracted by the magnet, DO YOU SEE???)

so the lesson is that if you fully reject either faith or science yer fucked

Renard (Renard), Monday, 29 May 2006 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

Locke is the man of science and Jack is the man of faith

oops, reverse that

Renard (Renard), Monday, 29 May 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

I think he knew exactly what would happen if the button wasn't pushed, but didn't want to be there when it happened.

I'm starting to think that what fake Henry wanted was for that electromagnetic pulse to go out and pinpoint the location of the island .... hence his little smirk after the sky goes white

maybe fake Henry is trying to signal Penny Widmore? but because of the danger involved, he didn't want to be in the hatch himself when the pulse went off

Renard (Renard), Monday, 29 May 2006 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

My guess is that Gale has nothing to do with Penny Widmore, but was looking for that result.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 29 May 2006 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

one other thing I've been kicking around is, What is "the incident"

the way it is alluded to on the training film it seems related to the hatch computer (right after the bad splice - or is it in the cut-out part? - Marvin Candle says, "after all, we don't want another incident")

my guess is that Dharma was all one big happy project at first. then the Gale + Beardy group or their predecessors decide that some or all of the experiments are not kosher and they rebel. they set up a computer and start sending IM's to some lonely Swan dude like "hey! there's a whole world out here! stop pushing the button!" Swan dude gets tricked into opening the hatch and gets bumrushed / doesn't push the button / catches some bad jungle plague

point being, maybe "the incident" is the genesis of the Others / Hostiles / Hanso true believer faction

Renard (Renard), Monday, 29 May 2006 22:50 (nineteen years ago)

incident = Radzinsky caught fucking the polar bear

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 08:48 (nineteen years ago)

incident = Marvin Candle hears number countdown noise but struck by horrible diarrhea

cws (cws), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 09:18 (nineteen years ago)

I forget, has it been suggested that the polar bears were there because Walt was reading about a polar bear in his comic, and he can make things appear/happen by thinking about them?

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 09:23 (nineteen years ago)

yes

is the implication that spy fella put the "quarantine" on the inside of the hatch as part of his deception to keep desmon in the hatch. did he do this just to keep desmond on, i can't remember now?

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 11:41 (nineteen years ago)

was it written inside? why would it be written outside anyway? argh

i'm still annoyed with Desmond. what was the real reason for not wanting to let him out? will Sayid ever find out who Kelvin was and recognise him? or will this just a coincidence for us to enjoy (as with Libby stuff)? i don't suppose Sayid could really learn anything from it - he and others already believe they were 'brought' there anyway.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 11:46 (nineteen years ago)

xpost

I thought it was there already. Kelvin - and Radzinsky?? - were deceived by Dharma until Kelvin got wise and in his turn deceived Desmond?

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 11:48 (nineteen years ago)

it was written inside - this was mentioned early on in series 2, possibly by sayid, as a "WTF". but it makes sense as part of the deception to keep someone (desmond) inside the hatch

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 12:06 (nineteen years ago)

what was the real reason for not wanting to let him out?

I think the answer to that one might be fairly simple, Kelvin was looking for a replacement and was gonna leave in the boat

the bit about the "meningococcal virus" from the Lost Experience seems to hint that the vaccine might be real or necessary

Renard (Renard), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

but aren't most vaccines good for longer than nine days?

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't really get why Desmond said to Claire 'don't bother, I've been shooting myself with that stuff every nine days for three years' or whatever. As if to say it ha it doesn't work. But duh, he's not ill... so, it DOES work? Then again, none of the losties are ill either.

Unless he meant, 'I WAS doing it and now I'm not, and I'm alive either way'.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 12:30 (nineteen years ago)

With the regards to the virus--Rousseau told Sayid to "watch them CLOSELY," which might imply that the disease has a very slow onset and might only get very bad when it's too late to do anything. Additionally, taking a shot every nine days sounds more like a series of treatments (like for rabies) than a vaccine. If you're unsure if you were exposed to the virus, how long you were exposed, and whether or not you're still being exposed, taking the treatments constantly might be your only option (hence Desmond taking them for 3 years). Finally, fun fact--meningoccal virii (I am too sleepy for plurals) are inflammations of the spinal cord/brain and do sometimes require limb amputation (like what Rousseau had to do to some of her crew)...

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

I watched the extras on the Spongebob movie DVD the other day, and it was really friggin weird to see Clancy Brown/Kelvin talking about Mr. Krabs being pretty much the sole voice of authority to characters who are essentially behaving like children without any other supervision.

What I'm sayin' is, dude was typecast on LOST.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

OMG Kelvin is Krabs!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

This makes Desmond Spongebob, eh?

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

o so that's who everyone is meaning by kurgan in the other thread. kelvin/kurgan/krabs - this guy wants to rename himself Klancy Brown innit

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

Henry Gale = Plankton!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

hahahaha

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't really get why Desmond said to Claire 'don't bother'

I think part of it is that when Desmond saw Kelvin with a rip in his suit and taking his mask off outdoors, he decided the vaccine & disease was bullshit .... but that could easily be the equivalent of Locke seeing the Pearl and deciding the button was fake ...

Renard (Renard), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm.... I just realized that. All the contamination suit stuff was just a bluff. When Kelvin was prepping to go out, I actually thought he was going to kill himself and the tear in the suit just kind of reinforced that idea. And then I totally forgot about it.

Still, the fact that the suit was there leads me to believe that it was part of a larger deception, i.e., Kelvin probably didn't write "quarantine" unless he was there at the very beginning and in on "everything" (whatever everything is). Plus we did have that whole three years between discovering Desmond and his death. Who knows what Kelvin may have found out or learned during that period.

Do we actually believe his story about Radzinsky, btw?

pleased to mitya (mitya), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

I'm kind of curious how long Kelvin was down that hole, he never says, does he? Using my badassical math skills I have determined it was approximately 9 or 10 years between him forcing Sayid to torture his homeboy and dragging Desmond off the beach.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

new female characters: any chance one of them might be Nadia, the girl from Sayid's past? There's that pic she left him with something along the lines of "if i don't see you again in this life, i'll see you in the next one" which kind of echoes desmond's "see you in another life, brother".

We also know she bought a house that Locke inspected so there's an extra connection there.

Roz (Roz), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 17:41 (nineteen years ago)

No, I think the female characters are going to be background castaways and/or Others, plus Penelope Widmore.

pleased to mitya (mitya), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

I hope the cute short-haired brunette tailite that was taken by the Others just before A-L shot Shannon returns. She's a fox!

That would be Cindy (babe + Australian accent - constant "MOY BAYBEE" hoohaw), who I believe they (Lindelof/Cuse) mentioned we haven't seen the last of in one of their cryptic/too-casual podcasts.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

xpost yeah i figured penny widmore was gonna be a regular character. I think i was just wishing for more sayid screentime.

cindy is supposed to be guy-what-wrote-bad twin's girlfriend, right?

Roz (Roz), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

Oh and did anybody else notice that Penny Widmore looks, like, exactly like girl from Grey's Anatomy with bigger boobs?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

re background characters: i always wonder what they think of the island. i mean, i'm guessing they know as much as the main characters do, simply because there's not much to do on an island besides talk and surely someone has to explain to them why so many of their crash-mates keep dying/getting shot/hurt.

that's the thing with the show though, you could kill off or make characters disappear all the time because there's still so many other people we know nothing about! it could go on forever. of course, the danger is that people start to lose interest because there's too many characters to keep track of.

Roz (Roz), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

I really don't get where Matthew gets the Hanso vs Dharma thing from. Dharma Initiative is a Hanso Foundation project, right? And didn't the Others seem pretty at home in the Dharma medical hatch doing shit to Claire and the baby?
I have no idea how you could reach the conclusion that there's some kind of rivalry going on. Have I missed something? Care to enlighten me?

John Cocktolstoy (John Cocktolstoy), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

I think part of it is that when Desmond saw Kelvin with a rip in his suit and taking his mask off outdoors, he decided the vaccine & disease was bullshit ....

This isn't when Desmond gave up on the vaccine though, cos he was still injecting when we first saw him, in S2E1, which was after the day he saw kelvin breathing outdoors (plane crash day).

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

you know i could have sworn that !Henry said he didn't do the numbers/push the button, but a quick review and he said nothing of the sort. damn my memory.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

He did tell Locke that he never pushed the numbers and that nothing happened after that. His motives behind that are a little sketchy, but oen assumes based on his expression at the end of the finale that he wanted the numbers to go unpressed at some point, just gambled that Locke wouldn't give up on it until !Henry was free.

cws (cws), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

you could kill off or make characters disappear all the time because there's still so many other people we know nothing about! it could go on forever

i could easily imagine it being on in 10 years with almost none of the original cast, ala ER.

I really don't get where Matthew gets the Hanso vs Dharma thing from. Dharma Initiative is a Hanso Foundation project, right?

it's theorizing, dude. personally i think it's more likely that hanso was being infiltrated (the whole mittelwerk plus disappearing executives thing) specifically because someone wanted to take over or reap the benefits of what's going on on the island, which could have the same net result (hostile weirdos taking over the dharma projects).

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 23:13 (nineteen years ago)

- group in the swan is Dharma
- another group is out in the jungle quoting Alvar Hanso
- people in the swan call the people in the jungle "the hostiles"

ergo, Dharma vs Hanso (possibly)

could be a lot of permutations of that basic framework, like maybe beard dude was on the original Dharma project and they look at Kelvin/Radzinsky as the newcomers & interlopers

LOL at pleased to mitya & Jessie the Monster energetic speculation

yes. Penny Widmore --> Penelope

= Jack's wife?

amongst others

disappointed there weren't clearer conclusions but I guess I don't really want proper conclusions for another year or two and what we saw did answer and pose more questions as they were bound to

LOL refs: david hume (1. scottish 2. free will Vs. determinism etc), lord kelvin from jules verne's "around the world in eighty days" (1. desmond's trip do you see 2. if fogg suceeded he would take kelvin's position in the royal society), penelope (1. odysseyus's faithful wife 2. desmond's trip do you see), bet there were more

liked finding out that desmond crashed the plane, liked the magnet thing going crazy and the flying cutlery & darts and stuff, haha liked the big four-toed colossus foot, kind of liked the connection of desmond's despair w/ locke's and des hearing locke banging and turning on the light that locke saw etc, tom's beard was v funny too

this whole widmore/hanso/dharma speculation almost feels detached from the actual show because we have v few concrete or def connected and v many disparate or v separate bits & pieces

cathy kept saying "do they deserve it?", about michael (w/ walt) and about charlie (w/ claire) and I dunno

it was good

gonna read your speculation thread, now!

haha, just thought of another LOL ref (someone mentioned the empire strikes back, upthread, (which I can see, in a few ways)): "blast doors" and, haha, eko base!!!

why didn't Desmond investigate further re when he heard Locke banging on the hatch door? as in actually go outside?

I thought it was odd that that was the first time Desmond heard Locke, given that he'd be banging and scraping at the hatch for days and having at it with his trebuchet thing, all BEFORE he gets to the stage when D. hears him and turns on the light, no?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 08:55 (nineteen years ago)

"He did tell Locke that he never pushed the numbers and that nothing happened after that" - yeah now i think about it, i bet that happens in the next ep (i just watched lockdown)

on the other thread there were some splendid ideas about what the "monster that didn't look like the monster" might be - but they were all dreams (like Yemi, both times, in "?"). which just about puts every apparition/dream up for grabs. Jack's dad (leading to coffin/water), Kate's horse, Walt (beckoning Shannon to her death!), Locke's vision of the plane, etc. OK, we saw Ecko being explicitly "scanned" with those flashes of his past, but, come on, it's the island man. maybe even Dave while originally a product of psychosis was real to Hurley, so the island/monster scanned in that and recreated it.

ooooOoo

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 08:58 (nineteen years ago)

RJG, they didn't give us any previews or nuffink so this thread is pretty much all wild guessing and speculation and I provide a handy recap of the webgame. So no spoilers really.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 11:37 (nineteen years ago)

Does anyone think Henry Gale was actually on a mission to set up the whole ruse, or do people reckon he was caught by accident?

I know Mrs Klugh implies it was not meant to happen, but it seems like the real point of Michael's mission was not getting Henry back but kidnapping Jack/Kate/Sawyer, and the only way to force them out into the jungle was by Henry being framed as a murderer.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 11:50 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, and given that Henry seems to be kind of in charge at the end, I am finding it harder to believe his capture was an accident. The Others must have all been wise to Rousseau's traps surely?

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

perhaps - there is too much contingency to any of these possible plans. rousseau caught and SHOT !Henry etc.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 11:56 (nineteen years ago)

also any speculation about the weird whispering noises. they seemed to disappear for a while but then returned in a big way when Jack/Kate/Sawyer were caught.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

Saying 'Elizabeth'...

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't think there would be any spoilers, here, but thanks, for that, Jessie the Monster

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 12:19 (nineteen years ago)

Does anyone think Henry Gale was actually on a mission to set up the whole ruse, or do people reckon he was caught by accident?

I am kind of leaning towards it, if only because the Others HAD to have realized Michael wasn't going to just sit around and do nothing after they took Walt--and they may have ensured it by sending those computer messages supposedly from Walt. Does anyone know the timeframe with relation to when Michael left to GET HIS BOY and when Henry was caught? It's possible that when Michael left the Losties, Henry set his plan in motion by getting caught, as it's a definite fact that he is a great manipulator and probably knew he could push a lot of things in the directions he wanted them to go just by entering the camp. The Michael shooting people thing probably wasn't planned, but it was pretty much a definite that Michael would at least let Henry go, and the combined loss of Henry as a bargaining chip and Michael's info about the Others would provide Michael with a decent argument for going to the Others' camp. Overall I think the idea that everything was intricately planned by the Others can be supported by the fact that so many things have multiple purposes--for instance, getting Michael to deliver Hurley, Jack, Kate, and Sawyer to the Others not only helps them toward whatever they need them for, but also ensures that Michael will not tell anyone about the island, since it would require revealing that he delivered four people into an uncertain fate and killed two people to do that (an unforseen benefit).

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

I still feel like I don't have enough information to assume that Henry was caught on purpose (your post is too dense for me to suss out your logic, sorry Jesssssie).

Rousseau is still a huge wildcard in this, you know. What if "the hostiles" Kelvin spoke about was actually a reference to Rousseau? The Others haven't really acknowledged her existence, but presumably that's how they would see her.

pleased to mitya (mitya), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

re: Henry getting caught on purpose -- he was already in the net but then tried to run off. if he wanted to get caught, wouldn't he have just gone quietly instead of getting himself shot w/ a damn arrow?

Renard (Renard), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I guess it's possible he wanted to be caught by the Losties, not by Rousseau. Or also possible, if a little far fetched, Rousseau was working with him?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

also possible, if a little far fetched, Rousseau was working with him?

hmm, at first I was like "no way" but she would probably do anything to get her kid back just like Michael

Renard (Renard), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

Also remember guys that !Henry wasn't trying to get "caught" by the losties, he was probably hinging his plan on them accepting him as a fellow castaway and allowing him into their camp -- for what purpose we don't quite know, other than, one assumes, getting kate, jack and sawyer to follow him into the woods for a trek.

cws (cws), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

we don't know that henry was doing anything other than walking through the woods! just because he had a backstory doesn't mean that he was on his way there to inflitrate them (let alone lead kate, jack, and sawyer into the woods). especially since, based on past actions, there's no reason to think they wouldn't just snatch people when they were out alone.

which reminds me: they already HAD kate and let her go. this suggests that wanting/needing them has something to do with either 1) things they learned during their study of walt, or 2) a consequence of agreeing to let walt go.

pleased to mitya (mitya), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 22:48 (nineteen years ago)

they pretty much had kate, jack, sawyer AND locke, at the "LIGHT EM UPPPPP" bit

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

good point - if they always knew they wanted kate/jack/sawyer couldn't they have just taken them then? but first they bluff them to take the guns, then... let them go! why not just turn the guns on them, get them tied up and cart em off? there were in reality only 3 (or was it 4?) but with guns etc, they could have taken k/j/s AND michael, or just dumped michael.

i rewatched the bit when the sky turned, and !henry's face didn't show anything. also rewatched the early bits of series 2, and the "incident" must have been when this first happened (the sky turning violet etc) - up to that point they were studying the odd magnetism, but then the incident was when it went "out of control" and they worked out how to "bleed" the energy every 108 mins.

or something

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 1 June 2006 10:26 (nineteen years ago)

they almost killed henry a couple of times, you think the others would take that chance?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 1 June 2006 10:51 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, nothenry would only have been caught on purpose if he was sure they would totally buy his henry gale story which they almost did but it is a bit of a risk and too many things could have gone wrong w/ it. e.g. he could have just been shot, on sight, as an Other, by rousseau or one of our dudes

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 1 June 2006 10:57 (nineteen years ago)

well, since they know so much about the losties, perhaps they could be more confident he wouldn't be killed.

I dunno, I guess I'd just like to see how he got captured.

why did she have to die, she had a good thing going on with hurley, i wanted see them too get together.

At first I was like "so?" but after thinking a bit, I realized this actually does give a hint as to what the island's ORIGINAL purpose was. I'm thinking it was might have been an experiment on how best to gather data/conduct an experiment.

so more sex >> many female characters will be killed.

ABC justifiably has the right to make as much money with Lost as they possibly can. So they will keep the show on for as long as it’s profitable.

shhh, carlton, you're killing my high.

HAY LOST EXPERIENCE UPDATE:

Alvar Hanso--definitely missing. Some doctor found out something is TERRIBLY WRONG with his blood one of the last times anyone ever saw him. Nobody except for Mittelwerk has seen him recently within the Hanso Foundation.

Mittelwerk--Had ALL THE BLOOD IN HIS BODY replaced (sooo Keith Richards) and like 800 vaccinations, then left on a boat for some island for something possibly related to the SPIDER PROTOCOL (revealed in the game recently, never been on the show). Also has HILARIOUS ponytail.

Valenzetti Equation--The Hanso Foundation has been using austistic savants at a mental institute in Iceland to run this equation day and night. The equation itself is said to determine the length of time until the end of humanity. Valenzetti is reportedly dead, but may just be missing.

The DHARMA Initiative--Something happened to them on the Lost island. They never came back, and they aren't there anymore.

So yeah, as was predicted, not terribly related to the show itself, but a lot of the info does affect theories about what's "really" going on.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Friday, 7 July 2006 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

groovy, thanks for that.

teh_kit has 22 friends (g-kit), Friday, 7 July 2006 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

Oh also the Valenzetti Equation is related to the "numbers" somehow and the Black Rock was a slave ship, Magnus Hanso owned it and is obv. an ancester of Alvar.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 7 July 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

That thing about Hanso & Mittelwork sort've implies that they might be on the island!

Also, on the black light map, in the bottom right corner(?), I believe a place is marked as "final resting place of Magnus Hanso".

choinklate (nickalicious), Friday, 7 July 2006 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, that's where the Black Rock crashed, indeedy-do. When this reveal was made, it was also mentioned that first-hand accounts of the Black Rock's departure saw it going opposite of the direction it should have gone in. Before Mittelwerk left on the boat, he was researching shipping lanes of the company the Black Rock was under, so yes, it is likely he is going to THE island.

that's actually it, more-or-less

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 10:17 (nineteen years ago)

it's the way you tell them.
i was wondering what made it so obvious i was a UKer, that's what i thought you'd explain.

BACK 2 LOST. i got the S2 part 1 DVDs the other day. it's amazing how much you forget about the early episodes, but also amazing to go back and watch them again now, knowing what i know about the end of the season. commentaries are fun, but don't shed much light on anything, with the exception of a few comments about eko & the smoke monster.

teh_kit is jayne without the tits (g-kit), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

ok so checking out the whispers thing (thanks teh_kit) it seems like half interesting half total crap. like just diddling around with noise filters until you hear something that sorta kinda sounds like a human voice and then attaching some plausibly lost-related statement to it.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 10:49 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, the 'hidden audio' part seems rather far-fetched, but, who knows?

the transcripts of the actual, audible whispers, on the other hand, you can put a lot more faith in.

teh_kit is jayne without the tits (g-kit), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

S2 episodes 1-12 have been released in the UK, yah. since we have to shell out for TWO box sets, i guess they are being nice to us and giving us the first half before you guys get the whole thang. also, it'd be a fucking stupid move to release the second half in the UK already, since we've not even seen them on TV yet.

teh_kit is jayne without the tits (g-kit), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

me no understand window screens thing, plz 2 explain?

teh_kit is jayne without the tits (g-kit), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

Britishes don't have window screens, which all of us Americans find mind-blowingly backwards.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

window screens are used by Americans to protect them from bugs, hobos, AIDS and whatnot.

oh and TERRISTS obv.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 13:13 (nineteen years ago)

john locke controls the weather, duh.

teh_kit is jayne without the tits (g-kit), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

I just assumed that monsoon season affected the tides but didn't necessarily mean it would rain all over them. I keep hoping though for the episode when it SNOWS.

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 13:17 (nineteen years ago)

in all seriousness, i think there's some strange shit going on with the weather in Lost, what with Locke's "it's going to rain in one minute", the weather changing with Walt's appearances, a few weather references in the whispers, the snowglobe effect (that must screw with the tide, and the weather, maybe?), it all adds up to atypical weather conditions.

teh_kit is jayne without the tits (g-kit), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

BRITISHORS WHO HAVEN'T SEEN ALL OF SEASON 2, LOOK AWAY.

Okay, while being poxy fuled, I was fudging around on thefuselage.com, and it seems like it has been confirmed that both Desmond AND Henry Gale are confirmed season regulars for S3. So check out this math:

Lindelof et al have maintained that they intend to keep the cast to 14...

14 - 3 (Libby, Ana Lucia, Michael) + 4 (Desmond, Henry Gail, Rodrigo Santoro as ?, Natasha Henstridge as ?) = 15 = another cast regular is going to DIE.

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Thursday, 27 July 2006 19:14 (nineteen years ago)

CONTINUED SPOILERIFFIC CONTENT:

Also, considering this show's long running gone-daddies theme, my $$$ is on JIN being the goner guy. And also because it's like 11:4 in the matter of HOT GUY ISLAND vs BABE ISLAND.

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Thursday, 27 July 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

noooo not Jin!!!

Also if Walt is gone too doesn't that bring it down to 14?

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Thursday, 27 July 2006 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

He wasn't part of the regular cast in S2.

I hope season 3 is the season Locke and Rousseau have creepy jungle sex.

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Thursday, 27 July 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

A none-to-bright coworker who consistently claims not to "get" Lost at all, told me when I started watching season one (like a month ago! We really blew through two seasons of a television show, and how) that "it means something whenever it rains." I was pissed at first due to the spoilerrifficness of his comment, but now I'm just puzzled. If it does mean something when it rains, they haven't really addressed it, have they?

It seems like the Others tend to come out in the rain, but I don't think there's a one-to-one correlation.

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 27 July 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

I only realised recently that the reason Jack never takes his shirt off during the regular testoterone strip parties enjoyed by Jin and Sayid is because Matthew Fox has non-Jack tattoos. Although frankly I think they could have written them in somehow. I feel robbed.

Maybe I don't feel robbed so much then.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 28 July 2006 07:15 (nineteen years ago)

They actually did write them in, remember in the pilot, Kate asks him about them. I think she brings them up a few more times as well.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:06 (nineteen years ago)

you see his funny arm tattoos all the time but, maybe, he has ones on his back/front that aren't also jack's or something

RJG (RJG), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, jack's tats have been addressed; Sawyer asked him about them, he had them done in Thailand. people are hoping for the Jack in Thailand flashbacks in S3.

teh_kit is jayne without the tits (g-kit), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:10 (nineteen years ago)

how will Desmond find out that Libby was on the island (assuming he will)?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:13 (nineteen years ago)

So that's where the extra gratuitous sex is going to come in. (hur hur hur I are so funny.)

Seriously though, if Jack became more of a flawed person I might hate him less.

xpost

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:15 (nineteen years ago)

Jack is not shirtless as often as Sawyid etc because he is very hairy, is my guess. And they've always hinted more at Jack's flaws rather than been like "OMG he too has darkside", but they've always sort've hinted at it (he's obviously got a history with the booze, for one).

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:17 (nineteen years ago)

I need to type "always hinted at" one more time.

Coffee break.

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah some of the tats are integral if not yet explained. But I'm sure there are extra hidden tats that haven't been addressed and will remain hidden because they're really naff or something.

I am soooo fiending for S3! Supposedly filming begins TODAY!

Also, Natasha Henstridge is totally NOT in the cast. I mean, they might have her on the show as a guest or whatever, but she is NOT a castmember. The 3 new people are = Rodrigo Santoro, Elizabeth Mitchell, and Kiele Sanchez. I don't know much about any of them except that they're all very pretty.

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Monday, 7 August 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

RJG (RJG), Monday, 7 August 2006 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

if Abrams and co. have any balls they will not feature Kate, Sawyer and Jack for the first three our four episodes of next series, then reveal they have been jacked into a Tron-style computer world and must battle The Others in lightcycles and with those funky discs.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 7 August 2006 12:29 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know much about any of them except that they're all very pretty.

They need some wirey old crones. Or at least middle-aged ones. I was disappointed when Rose stopped being the mystical wisewoman and just became a bitchy wife. For THAT guy she was all psychic and shit?
Also, bring back Danielle! She's my role model.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Monday, 7 August 2006 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

RJG (RJG), Monday, 7 August 2006 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

i guess it's cool the captured trio won't be in the first episode (as that link seems to suggest). 'A Tale Of Two Cities'? interesting.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 7 August 2006 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

that's odd - it's been said on the fuselage that the first six episodes (the 'mini-season' before a break of a month or so, before a continuous weekly showing of the rest of the season, according to ABC schedule) is primarily about the captured trio. conflicting information, DAMN YOU!

and how come we can talk about this kinda thing now, when people were getting yelled at last season for talking about previews?

teh_kit haev been evicted, oh noes! (g-kit), Monday, 7 August 2006 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

EXCITING TO SPECULATE!

latest podcast is very nice, it's pretty much the whole Q&A session from Comic Con. biggest, most spoilerific give-away was a couple of comments that indicate that time may not be running on the island at the same rate as the real world. OOOH.

i am so wetting it in anticipation of S3. i need help tbh.

teh_kit haev been evicted, oh noes! (g-kit), Monday, 7 August 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

I'm strangely nonchalant about it really because my brain has failed to imagine what will/might happen at all. I can't see ahead, it is all a dense fog. This is great really though.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 7 August 2006 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

tbh, we've been given so little, it's probably nigh-on impossible to make an educated guess as to what the fuck is actually going on. there are SO MANY theories out there, some awful, some great, but probably all wrong.

the recent revelation from J.J that Lost is, in fact, a sci-fi show, throws yet another spanner into serious theorists' works. apparently it wasn't pitched to ABC as sci-fi, and they've held off confirming it all this time because they were worried it might disappoint the audience. to be honest, i'd be far more disappointed if it headed in a supernatural/spiritual direction. sci-fi is where it's at!

teh_kit haev been evicted, oh noes! (g-kit), Monday, 7 August 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

These are things I hope for...I don't ask for much:

1. Locke/Eko/Desmond not dead.
2. Locke to go back to creepy jungle-man Locke instead of pissy hatch-man Locke.
3. Lots more fisticuffs.
4. Lots more making out.
5. Henry Gale flashback.
6. Danielle Rousseau flashback.

x-post I've always thought of it as a sort of mystical sci-fi show, it seems like they've all along tried to maintain that balance - "Man of Science, Man of Faith", you know?

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Monday, 7 August 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

What'll happen is we'll have another season of flashbacks and the cast wandering round the island, finding more random props that the producers found in the studio lot and decided would be 'really cool'. And you can bet your life that Hurley isn't going to get any fucking thinner.

1. Locke/Eko/Desmond not dead.
2. Locke to go back to creepy jungle-man Locke instead of pissy hatch-man Locke.
3. Lots more fisticuffs.
4. Lots more making out.
5. Henry Gale flashback.
6. Danielle Rousseau flashback.

These would all be cool.

I do wonder about the new characters though. It sometimes seems that there are too many characters already. But I guess that some of these people will just be cannon fodder like Ana Lucia and the crazyface lady whose name I'm forgetting right now.

Also, now that they've shown us Alex, how long until the Rousseau family reunion?

Still so much left unaddressed, but will they ever actually get around to explaining/exploring? The skeletons ("Adam & Eve"), the polar bears, the smoke creature, the cable that goes out into the water, the Black Rock, the RADIO TOWER somewhere on the island, still um 3(?) more hatches!, etc.

Okay, so I just watched both seasons within the last month or so. My biggest question from the S2 finale is this: Why was Desmond so game when Locke suggested they see what happen if the timer runs out, if Desmond clearly KNOWS what happens when it runs out? After all, after he raced back to the hatch after killing Kelvin, the clock went all hieroglyphicky, metal objects flew around the room, and the computer spit out SYSTEM FAILURE at him. Wasn't that a pretty good indication that not pushing the button means that things go haywire, despite Locke's hypothesis (from the videotape at the Pearl) that it's all a psychological experiment?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

I think he knew the machine was going to go nuts but wanted to find out what the failsafe key (which no one else knew about) would do

dmr (Renard), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

i've still not come up with a satisfactory answer for the same question. the only answer that occurs is that Des, having been on a boat for 3 weeks, only to return to Craphole Island's Snowglobe Paradise, he theorises that maybe everything isn't quite what it seems, and to hell with it.

or maybe he was just kinda scared by Button-Pushing-Hatch-Monkey-Locke, and decided to play along until he could assess just how serious Locke was.

i am teh_kit! (g-kit), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

Also, when Locke suggested they not push the button, Desmond was piss drunk.

nah, he hadn't read his book. he wasn't ready to die, surely?

i am teh_kit! (g-kit), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno, that's how I was looking at it. He remembered finding Kelvin down in the failsafe hole, boozing it up and ready to "make it all go away" and figured it was time for himself to go that route. Maybe he was depressed that his boat escape just led him back to the island.

dmr (Renard), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, that makes sense.

i don't think it is, personally. if you listen to that fragment it sounds like there's the end of a previous word at the very beginning. like instead of "i'm - alvar hanso" it'll turn out to be "i'm - steve, main janitorial coordinator for - alvar hanso."

The background music in the fragments matches up perfectly. If it's not really Hanso (which it may not be--Marvin Candle uses different names in every video and probably none of them are his actual name) he's more likely just lying.

I refuse to pay any attention to "The Lost Experience." Even though it's officially sanctioned by ABC and the show's creators, I don't consider it canon. I don't like having things potentially spoiled by clues in the game, even though I've already picked up a fair amount from this thread and others like it.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 17 August 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

i'm not following TLE either. i generally skim over the info, even if it's right in my face. something inside me just refuses to consider it canon, too.

i am teh_kit! (g-kit), Thursday, 17 August 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

There is evidence that the show's creators are actively participating in the game. The insistence that the reveals made in the game aren't important to know to watch the next season makes me wonder, though. I figure either they're going to reveal everything important the game reveals in the first ep of season three, or it'll all turn out to be a dream/fake/whatever.

I kind of just remembered about broken hearted, flipped out Hurley having to trek back across the island alone. I kind of hope Hurley has some kind of breakdown and destroys a bunch of stuff. Or finds Rousseau and gives it to her, you know, SEXUALLY.

a naked Kraken annoying Times Square tourists with an acoustic guitar (nickalici, Friday, 15 September 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

FOR POSTERITY:

1. Hurley, alone, trekking across jungle
2. Jack, Kate, Sawyer, in the clutches of Teh Others
3. Sayid, Sun, Jin, on the boat
4. Eko, Locke, Desmond, ?????, lord only knows
5. Charlie, Claire, Rose, Bernard, et al, back on the beach

Do you think they'll not even mention beach crew/boat crew/etc in first 6 ep story arc?

a naked Kraken annoying Times Square tourists with an acoustic guitar (nickalici, Friday, 15 September 2006 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

Speaking of Rousseau, I'm getting bothered by the fact that none of the characters (or at least Hurley or Sayid) never followed the cable that led to her lair in the other direction, i.e., into the ocean. There's speculation, of course, that it leads to SPOILER.

POSSIBLY SPOILERY FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T WATCHED THE LOST EXPERIENCE FILM

Having watched this, I've come up with the following theory.

We know the radio tower was broadcasting the numbers as the core value of the Valenzetti Equation, being monitored by Hanso/Mittelwerk for changes resultant from the induced virus, and that when Danielle changed the broadcast they realised something was wrong. I remember some theorising early on about the 108 minutes aligning with a satellite passover, and given what we know now about the EM shielding of the island it seems credible that the timing is merely to get the numbers to the radio tower to allow it to broadcast during the window where the satellite is overhead. Danielle said at one point, and the wife of the dead guy Hurley crossed Australia to find, that the voice broadcasting the numbers sounded automated.

What I'm speculating is that the computers behind the entry terminal in the Swan at one time were producing a real time answer for the Valenzetti Equation, which were then transferred from some output there to the radio station via the entry terminal. At some point during the handovers, this information was lost in Chinese whispers to the point that by the time Kelvin entered the extent of it was "just input these numbers".

Quite where the EM discharge fits into this, I don't know.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 09:16 (nineteen years ago)

it's teh_kit! (g-kit), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

This was our Sawyer nickname rule equation:

Each time he calls someone one of his nicknames = 1 drink.

Each new nickname he crammed into one sentence = 2 drinks x number of nicknames in sentence.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

The fake beard is made from Henry Gale's discarded pubes. He makes Tom wear it to let him know who's boss.

a naked Kraken annoying Times Square tourists with an acoustic guitar (nickalici, Wednesday, 20 September 2006 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

The glue for the fake beard is made by Dharma.

The most interesting thing is that the Dharma logo on the shark and the water canteen don't correspond with any of the ones we've seen thus far. Speculation is that it may belong to The Flame (as identified on the Blast Door Map), which may be an underwater base - the one the cable that Sayid discovered when looking for Danielle leads to/from - which has been vaguely hinted at in some Jack related footage from Series 3.

Oddly, as part of the Lost Experience a couple of other Dharma marked sharks have been shown but both of those are marked with the Swan logo.

what's the lost experience film?

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 21 September 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

it's a film edited together from (to date) approx 70-80 snippets of footage, which were unearthed by people involved in the Lost Experience, which, as far as i know, involves messing about with clues and websites and other stuff. some people are actively involved in this, the rest of us just sit and wait for the results (such as the LE film).

(It's worth noting there are 5 phases to The Lost Experience, only 3 of which will have concluded by the "end" above leading to speculation that there will be another 2 phases during the long break planned during this season.)

is the awesome ending of s2 the first time a bit of non-island stuff has taken place in the show's 'present'? if so is there any possbility more non-island stuff will come up in s3?

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 09:23 (nineteen years ago)

i will possibly crap my pants with excitement if we get a Fenry flashback in the first 6 eps.

nobody is sure if the 'real world' stuff is present day, and it's made even more confusing by the writers letting slip a few phrases about time possibly not passing on the island as it does in the real world.

a naked Kraken annoying Times Square tourists with an acoustic guitar (nickalici, Thursday, 28 September 2006 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

nobody is sure if the 'real world' stuff is present day, and it's made even more confusing by the writers letting slip a few phrases about time possibly not passing on the island as it does in the real world.

there was something in the clip show related to this that felt like a hint. by necessity the only stuff they seem to focus on is things that are important to the plot going forward .... so it stuck out that all of a sudden they're showing this seemingly unimportant (plotwise) moment between Sayid and Hurley when they fix the shortwave radio and pick up a radio transmission on the beach that sounds like 1940s jazz (Moonlight Serenade or something).

S: These radio waves bounce off the ionosphere, they could be coming from anywhere.

teh_kit (g-kit), Thursday, 28 September 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

also the theory that the Others never hurt anybody unprovoked is shot down by a re-viewing of the boat abduction scene, they put a cap in Sawyer pretty fast. (but on the closing voiceover they reiterated the "who are the good guys and who is really bad" stuff).

and lastly I have no idea now why Desmond went down in the hatch with Locke. guess he was drunk when he agreed but he was lucid when they started the experiment the next day. temporary insanity? just wanted to believe what Locke was pushing even though he knew otherwise? him turning the failsafe key was def. a last resort and not his plan all alng, it seems like.

dmr (Renard), Thursday, 28 September 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 28 September 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

if you weigh up the number of people the Losties have killed/fucked up, compared to the number of people the Others have killed/fucked up, the Losties come out as the 'bad guys' by quite a margin.

teh_kit (g-kit), Thursday, 28 September 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

yeh but this one incident seems a little out of step from the rest. i remember the scene and it was a genuinely eerie moment until he claimed 'joeks'. mind you so was the bit he thought he heard the parrot talking (did we tho?). (xpost)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 28 September 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

as for shooting Sawyer, that really seems like a strange move. i can only guess that they didn't shoot to kill, since he was one of the four on "the list", and they obviously wanted to take him alive at some point.

teh_kit (g-kit), Thursday, 28 September 2006 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

They only shot at Sawyer AFTER he pulled a gun on them...self-defense = legit.

Goodwyn killing that one dude who took 2 hour craps that Ana Lucia put in the hole = not exactly good guy behavior though.

ps you know we never actually SAW Ethan hang Charlie, there is always the possibility that someone ELSE did that

a naked Kraken annoying Times Square tourists with an acoustic guitar (nickalici, Thursday, 28 September 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

GOD NICK WHY DON'T YOU JUST SAY WHAT I WAS ABOUT TO SAY. ;)

The thing about Ethan hanging Charlie that always weirded me out is the sheer amount of strength it'd require for one person to DO that.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Thursday, 28 September 2006 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

Losties' sin list:

Charlie shooting Ethan like 5 times
Mr Fucking Eko killing 2 guys with his PowerRock
Ana Lucia killed an Other chick in one of their kidnapping raids
Then she killed Shannon (an accident, but what the hell)
Sawyer shot that random Other that was following them in LTDA
Michael killed Ana and Libby
Sayid smashed Henry's face in (i watched this episode again recently, he really beats the fuck out of him)

any more that i'm missing?

back to the Others being naughty:
Can we assume that Ethan killed Scott/Steve to follow up on his "i'll kill 1 of u every day lol" threat? it wasn't shown onscreen, but it seems very likely that it was Ethan, or if not, one of his Other pals.

teh_kit (g-kit), Thursday, 28 September 2006 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

interesting that Gale has no revenge planned against Sayid yet (THAT WE KNOW OF) but is so focussed on the BLT (Jack/Kate/Swayer). i mean Sayid is the one who is going to persuade ALL of the survivors to march mob-like to rescue the trio, even Claire and HER BOYBY.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 28 September 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

Gale has it ALL planned out, d00d.
It's likely to be a case of "take the Alphas, let the rest come to us. fuck all this walking shit."
i'm totally anticipating a Sayid being tortured scene.

teh_kit (g-kit), Thursday, 28 September 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

He doesn't want Jack Kate Sawyer for revenge though does he? He wants them for research! Revenge is a dish which doesn't tempt a man of Gale's refinement!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 28 September 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

I think this was mentioned already after the finale but there is definitely a moment before Gale puts the hoods on his captives where Kate and Jack give each other the nod and Sawyer looks quizzical like he's not in on it. Like Kate and Jack have their own plan (for infiltration?) that's just between the two of em.

I mean...seriously...tomorrow is a day and then there's a day after that and at 9 pm on that day there will be a new episode, holy titfucking christ.

A shot in the dark that is not very well thought through or justified in any way. Hurley is a bad guy!

And Libby's husband was Dr Marvin Candle from the orientation videos.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Monday, 2 October 2006 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

Hey guys (jaymc?)...Dr Marvin Candle gave a different name on the orientation video at the Pearl station. Do any of you remember what that name was? That ep (and the one where Kate sees the horse) are the only s2 ones I don't have a torrent of yet.

i had a LOST dream last night! Henry Gale DROWNED.
this is therefore my prediction for Season 3. Henry will, at some point, drown.

SO EXCITED NOW.

Dr Marvin Candle was also Dr Mark Wickman in another vid. Still on the candley theme.

the really fast montagey bits in the ep with eko's bro and the one where claire remembers being kidnapped--do these reveal any secrets, when slowed down?

the classic sounds of the seventh of january 1998 (Enrique), Monday, 2 October 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

in the Claire ep there is just a lot of stuff with the Dharma logo on it and you can see that the person who warns / rescues Claire is Alex (Rousseau's daughter)

the Eko one all I can remember is that if you freeze-frame the smoke monster it seems to flash a bunch of Eko's memories

teh_kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 08:12 (nineteen years ago)

Jin's balls didn't work. Now they do. Same as Locke walking. It's Teh Island innit.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 10:35 (nineteen years ago)

teh_kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 10:58 (nineteen years ago)

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:00 (nineteen years ago)

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:26 (nineteen years ago)
