The Return Of Poptimism : October 5th 2006

That's right, you heard it here now. The world famous, often imitated, always bettered, Freakytrigger Pop Music dancing and drinking club Poptimism has a new home. At least for a bit. Ousted cruelly by the new management at the Polar Bear a year ago we had been homeless, homeless, not even moonlight sleeping on a midnight lake. Well I went down the Polar Bear the other day AND IT WAS CLOSED! Any connection between their closure to their FASCISTIC POLICY ON POP CLUBS is easily demonstrable.

Well fear not. After a year wandering int the wilderness, occasionally poking its head into sweaty dives looking for sustenance, Poptimism has a new home. And people who enjoyed the last temp version at the Union Tavern, will be pleased to hear that this is the venue. A proper upstairs room in a pub. With a little serving hatch, oddly padded tables and with us needing to bring the gear. But dammit, the management and staff are so nice there, and it marries all the things we like about pubs with all the things we like about pop.

So Thursday 5th October: the Return Of Poptimism.
AKA Timtimism (as it is Tim's Birthday)
Furthermore known as Mandee & Kelly-a-Rama (special guest DJ's from across t'pond)

DJ's include The Barnet Ape (who has refound his mojo), Carsmile and Cockfarmer, with guest Nu-country and Tickle Tune from Tim, plus aforementioned septics.

Come one. Come all. (Capacity about eighty - so all in the usual, not strictly accurate sense as it would be used in logic. But then if I wanted to do that I'd use an ∀).

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 11:15 (nineteen years ago)

woo!

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

the Polar Bear seemed a really popular pub - don't understand why it's been shut down (presumably for good) - but then see also Intrepid Fox (so much for the Gothtimism branch out...).

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 11:27 (nineteen years ago)

Property development (in the case of the Intrepid Fox)

Oh No It's Dadaismus! (Dada), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 11:28 (nineteen years ago)

Will there be the same nudge-wink attitude to the lastness of last orders I wonder?

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 11:30 (nineteen years ago)

hey, it's my birthday too although i don't know if i can make it :-(

wogan lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 11:32 (nineteen years ago)

> as it is Tim's Birthday

this is a lie. it's actually dog latin's birthday.

awesome! i like this place. when is it until?

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

Only midnight, but then that worked well last time, with similar last order shenangians.

November and December are probably going to be Friday's. Nick (the manager) did ask if we minded people from ITN coming too...

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 11:53 (nineteen years ago)

... Trevor McDonald?

Oh No It's Dadaismus! (Dada), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

Wicked. I'm there.

Probably just Jon Snow and Krisnan Guru-Murthy. Its a more Ch4 News kind of deal.

So if we hear "Fix You" at about quarter past midnight, we'll know why...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 12:05 (nineteen years ago)

what about the one with the lisp, john smith's daughter, isn't she?

also surely the channel 4 news theme is almost bosh anyway...

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

as I said already on another thread, i think there's been a disaster re: DJing. My CD-burner is KAPUT. could someone else be my proxy??

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Monday, 25 September 2006 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

can you not zap your mp3s to someone for burning?

Ed (dali), Monday, 25 September 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

just print out the setlist you want to play and get someone else to dj for you on the night.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 25 September 2006 12:26 (nineteen years ago)

yes, i think perhaps a mix of these two options might be best, ie i bet we have some of the thing you want to play and if the rest could be gmailled/ysied i could burn a cd for you.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 11:40 (nineteen years ago)

I love Poptimism.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

Looking forward especially to December and Club Poptimism On Ice...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

Am now trying to package Poptimism to friends as thee destination venue for the G00blar Birthday Extravaganza.

g00blar (gooblar), Friday, 29 September 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

Another one

Ed (dali), Friday, 29 September 2006 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

Mandee & Kelly-a-Rima? Sounds enticing, but I seem to have about 3 plans on the 5th already. Hummmm.

Badrock Example (Barima), Sunday, 1 October 2006 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

You're just too much of a social butterfly, Barims. ;-)

Virginia Plainsong (kate), Monday, 2 October 2006 09:47 (nineteen years ago)

Are there any early doors plans?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 2 October 2006 11:33 (nineteen years ago)

Opening the doors early!!!

Pete (Pete), Monday, 2 October 2006 11:57 (nineteen years ago)

I'll come and watch that bit then.

I was thinking more along the lines of Carsmile psyching himself up.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 2 October 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

That's not why he plays, Eye of the Tiger.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 2 October 2006 12:46 (nineteen years ago)

comma abuse up 400% since RJG 'let go'.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 2 October 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

I think Andrew was usuing my new handle, Konal.

Eye of the Tiger (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 2 October 2006 12:58 (nineteen years ago)

obvs.

g00blar (gooblar), Monday, 2 October 2006 13:25 (nineteen years ago)

I am working on the free giveaway CDs tonight.

The theme is BALLADS.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 2 October 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

can you make it BALLARD but sans Primitives?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 2 October 2006 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

Ugh, ballads. Ballads are only good for couples. How about you play some music for the rest of us? Bah, I might boycott this. :-(

Virginia Plainsong (kate), Monday, 2 October 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

Kate this is the GIVEAWAY CD i.e. not what we're going to play! It's for punters to take home.

(I am also compiling my CDs of stuff to play which is the usual bosh nonsense.)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 2 October 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

that's a load of ballads, that about only for couples.

it's also for KARAOKES.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 2 October 2006 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, OK, that's fine then. Carry on.

::makes note not to take free CD::

It's this one.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 09:41 (nineteen years ago)

HAng on, If 'Bold Sir Rylas' is Ballad i don't know what is?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 09:41 (nineteen years ago)

Apologies, a significant error was mad ein that last statement

Hang on, If 'Bold Sir Rylas' isn't Ballad i don't know what is?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 09:42 (nineteen years ago)

A Ballad is a song with a strong narrative aspect as far as I'm concerned, rather than singing abut the joys of Rum an Syphilis.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 09:44 (nineteen years ago)

Right, I will be coming along (+1, possibly more)! When is everyone meeting? I won't be able to make it until round about 8ish probably.

steal compass, drive north, disappear (tissp), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 09:56 (nineteen years ago)

Just go straight to the Union Tavern then, should be filling up by that time.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

Sounds like a plan.

steal compass, drive north, disappear (tissp), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 10:26 (nineteen years ago)

Just go straight to the Union Tavern then, should be filling up by that time.

Unless they get the plumbers to sort out the leak.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 10:35 (nineteen years ago)

if they fix the leak it'll fill up even quicker..

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 10:40 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think they stock Blossom wine.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

During the evening, if anyone would like a guest slot in a future poptimism, write your neame on a slip and hand it to us. We will draw - like the World Cup, the next four or so Poptimism guest slots from this pile so get yr names in.

Note from December there will probably be three guests slots per Poptim, as Tom will be on baby duty...

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 11:29 (nineteen years ago)

Good idea, though I wonder whether it would be fairer to keep the draw for would-be first-timers?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 11:36 (nineteen years ago)

well if it's like the world cup, people who are doing it every time will get preferencial seedings.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 11:39 (nineteen years ago)

There could be section heats and play-offs.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 11:41 (nineteen years ago)

And headbutts.

steal compass, drive north, disappear (tissp), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 11:43 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry I can't make this one, but I hope I see you all soon (wouldn't mind DJ-ing at some point either).

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 11:45 (nineteen years ago)

I'll be there, celebrating my new-found freedom (handed in my notice today - 7 years and 7 months down, 7 weeks (in theory) to go!)

ledge (ledge), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

Bold Sir Rylas isn't a ballad! There's far too much chopping off of heads and slaughtering of old witches and/or pigs down by the river side for it to be a ballad.

Ballad in common parlance these days = slow song for nuzzling up against your dance partner's secondary sexual characteristics, not characterisation and narrative.

Virginia Plainsong (kate), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

The first time I heard Jon and John do it they introduced it as a ballad.

Nuts to modernity, also I wouldn't expect nuzzling to 'total eclipse of the heart' (so-called ballad) maybe rutting but no nuzzling.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 12:21 (nineteen years ago)

Now when you and I start our club, we can have our OWN ballad section and play hearty tales like Child Morris and the Court of the Crimson King during the erection section, but until now, lord knows what we're stuck with. Sweet Child O' Mine: Ballad? I think not.

Virginia Plainsong (kate), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

Of course you'll have to wait and see what all of these actually are!

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

there seems to be a lack of incest, pig killing, cross-dressing, long broad swords and people being cleft in twain on that CD.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

...and people wonder why folk is the new rock'n'roll!

Virginia Plainsong (kate), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

all covered in track 6 i think you'll find

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

And he split her head down to her chin
You should have seen her kick and grin
Down in the grove where the wild flowers grow
And the green leaves fall all around

Virginia Plainsong (kate), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

Are there any cheap and reasonable B&Bs hanging around nearby?

Turns out that the place I thought I could stay, I can't anymore.

steal compass, drive north, disappear (tissp), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

(I am aware how ridiculous this question appears)

steal compass, drive north, disappear (tissp), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

Try comfort inn Kings cross or the travelodge down the road.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't put any folk on the CD cos I hate it all. There's plenty of country though.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

Does this mean I can't put my name into the hat to play pop song of the 17th century?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

No not at all! Especially as I won't even be there in December and January (and probably February too)

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

Does #20 involve car stickers?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

Does anyone know if Mark S will be attending this, i wish to return some books.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

Also Tom, remember this?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

Track 2 is by the Band?

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

These are ALL written by Jim Steinmann, right?

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone want to recommend a good restaurant or three around the Union Tavern for eats before the dancing?

g00blar (gooblar), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 10:26 (nineteen years ago)

Medcalf, exmouth market
Porchetta, roseberry avenue
Price Albert, Kings Cross Road
The Union Tavern itself

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 10:27 (nineteen years ago)

Paolina, Kings Cross Road

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 10:27 (nineteen years ago)

Golden Fish Bar, Farringdon Road.

You can always rely on me for the classy choice.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 10:35 (nineteen years ago)

Golden Fish Bar = best chippie in London by far. Better than my new local, the Fryers Delight, which fancies itself as holding that title but is WRONG.

I would quite happily never set foot in the Medcalf ever again.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 10:55 (nineteen years ago)

I might go to the chippy then.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 10:59 (nineteen years ago)

aki japanese bistro, grays inn road. japanese food and asahi dark goodness.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:01 (nineteen years ago)

but the Fryers Delight has a fish with a hat on

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:01 (nineteen years ago)

can anyone remember when the union tavern stops serving food, and what kind of prices its food is?

i managed to force down some cake the other night so fingers crossed i might be able to eat my first solid food for nearly 2 weeks on thursday.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:03 (nineteen years ago)

oh and i forget there's the KFC at kings cross innit.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

DC clearly can't be trusted on food if he doesn't like medcalf, best chippy in London is the Theobalds Rd Friars Delight.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:09 (nineteen years ago)

anyone tried Faulkners on Kinglsand Rd for Fish n' cushions i mean chips?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:10 (nineteen years ago)

For those like me looking for something to do early doors (although now I don't know if I will be going at all due to having missed a day of work):

5 October: National Poetry Day

3-6pm: Identity Parade
The Poetry Café is putting on a whole afternoon of poetry around the day's theme of identity - it will act as an anthology of all that is best about café events. Why not take a late lunch and join us at 3pm - we will cook special poetry food - fortune cookies with lines of poetry inside and toasted cheese words! You'll hear a wonderful line up of poets and writers: some new young writers, like the winners of the rise young people's slam (great performers), some new to poetry who have come to writing through classes run for refugees by Tall Lighthouse, others already established like Mir Mahfuz Ali chosen by Exiled Writers Ink and surprise guests from The Cellar, African Writers, Dodo Modern Poets, Loose Muse, New Blood and Roddy Lumsden's Broadcast series. Hosts Nii Ayikwei Parkes and John Hegley will introduce the readers and intersperse them with John's inimitable songs.
contact poetrycafe@poetrysociety.org.uk for more information or call 020 7420 9887

6.30pm: Poetry From Poets Corner: Presented by The Poetry Society in association with Westminster Abbey

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:13 (nineteen years ago)

my flatmates went to faulkners and felt really ripped off - said the chips were average, fish was crap and it was really expensive. dunno though, don't eat fish so i haven't been.

emsk ( emsk), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:14 (nineteen years ago)

the best fish and chips is in mile end, near the climbing wall. they do SPAM FRITTERS.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:23 (nineteen years ago)

so many fish and chips meals have disappointed me though, i can't even remember the last time i had a really good one. i think it may have been in holloway somewhere.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:24 (nineteen years ago)

DC clearly can't be trusted on food if he doesn't like medcalf, best chippy in London is the Theobalds Rd Friars Delight.

did you mean to write this in the style of a slightly reserved dj martian?

CHIPS SYSTEM

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:26 (nineteen years ago)

Golden fish bar is way better than Fryers delight these days, in the past maybe FD was better but not anymore - they started believing their own hype.

Ken's Aki recommendation is very sound, his KFC recommendation - less so.

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

Fryer's Delight is no use to me because they don't have a nice comfy caffish sit down area, and TGFB does. I am too old and grumpy to be standing on the street trying to eat delicious batterded fish with my fingers.

Also it's possible to roll down to the Union Tavern from TGFB on a freshly re-distended chip-engorged belly, if only you can haul yourself that 15 yards up to the brow of the hill.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:49 (nineteen years ago)

yes they do, they have 4 comfy booths

I don't think FD have come off the boil, I had some last night and it was a delicious as ever.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

I like Fryer's Delight's 'caffish' tables and seats a lot.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

Ken - TGFB also does spam fritters, and every time I go I forget until just after I order. If they did pea fritters it would be perfect.

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:56 (nineteen years ago)

I can't we're arguing about this on Poptimism thread.

My request for tomorrow night, which DJs are free to ignore as always of course, is 'Rok Da House' by Beatmasters ft. Cookie Crew. It's not a ballad though.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:57 (nineteen years ago)

(xpost, to Ed) Do they? Aces! I'll have to give them a whirl sometime. Are they often unoccupied?

You will not make me change my plan to stuff my face full of TGFB chips tomorrow though, it's (a) too good (b) too well-placed given where I'll be and where I'll be going (c) something I've been looking forward to for at least 45 minutes.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 11:57 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah the Fryers Delight has good seating, I still maintain its not a patch on the Golden Fish Bar food-wise though.

I've never actually eaten in the Medcalf but a year's worth of Friday night work drinks have put me off ever setting foot in there.

I am intrigued by this Union Tavern food.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

(I like the fact TGFB has its caff separate from its frying shop, which means the atmos in there is not quite as greezy chippyish as it can be at tables in an actual chipper.

NB this may also be the case at TFD - as you know I didn;'t know about the seating there until mere minutes ago - I'm Just Sayin Like.)

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 12:21 (nineteen years ago)

Medcalf do one of the finest examples of steak and chips and a very good cheese plate; a favourite of Mr and Mrs Hand

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

i don't know what to make of the table service thing at fryers delight, i think i like to order standing by the fish. does one order at the counter at the golden fish bar? i might go there to give them a try.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

oh oops xpost!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

Yes one orders at the counter, but not the fish shop counter, at the caff counter in the caff premises.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 12:28 (nineteen years ago)

I suppose any request for "Fishheads" by Barnes and Barnes tomorrow is necessarily doomed.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 12:30 (nineteen years ago)

What about Fish out of Marillion?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 October 2006 10:34 (nineteen years ago)

I will probably skulk off home and collapse, but if there are any early doors plans, I might like to know what they are. The PO Caff thing features superstar poet John Hegley, but it starts at 3.

Don't know if I can come along tonite, I'm (prolly) working late 'n' feelin' shit into the bargain (cold)

TS: Mick Ralphs v. Ariel Bender (Dada), Thursday, 5 October 2006 10:42 (nineteen years ago)

I've dreamed about Club Poptimism on two consecutive nights (!) so I suppose I'll have to make an appearance (Thursday though, so I won't be staying late)...

TS: Phally vs Buff (nostudium), Thursday, 5 October 2006 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

Its OK, from next month we move to a FRIDAY. When Channel 4 News get to leave half an hour earlier!

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 5 October 2006 10:49 (nineteen years ago)

Another Club Popular next month as well... :-)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 5 October 2006 10:50 (nineteen years ago)

SO NO NUDITY TONIGHT. UNLESS YOU HAVE A LICENCE.

Can nudey licences be bought at the post office?

I expect I'll be there around 6:30, depending on my walking route. I am about to eat a big curry so probably won't be joining in with the fish-scoffin'. Don't think I'll stay long.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 5 October 2006 11:15 (nineteen years ago)

Are there any late night drinking plans? Or will people be scuttling home to be tucked up in bed for work tomorrow?

From my perspective, definitely the latter.

also, dont drink lots of beer when have to be up early to do an important thing

i know i did this one before, i made a career out of it

its good to have a second job, perhaps.

also, two songs about john arne riise

-- (688), Friday, 6 October 2006 00:25 (nineteen years ago)

and yea, some kind of rigged shit for upcoming guest slots, people not wanting to be hearing mid period deodato?

-- (688), Friday, 6 October 2006 00:33 (nineteen years ago)

I never got my name in the hat. The world needs more folk music.

Ed (dali), Friday, 6 October 2006 05:45 (nineteen years ago)

We only drew one month's worth of guests - Jan and Feb still TBA.

Thanks for coming, everyone! And dancing! And putting up with all of "Bumper Of My SUV" - the intention was to do 1 chorus then go into another monster tune but the next CD went astray.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 6 October 2006 06:09 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sorry I missed that.

Ed (dali), Friday, 6 October 2006 06:10 (nineteen years ago)

And thanks to Tim Mandee and Kelly for the rockin guest DJing too.

We thought we'd get to go on till midnight as last month, but apparently there's been issues with the neighbours over noise - we should be fine next time tho (cos its a Friday) (FRIDAY!)

Tom (Groke), Friday, 6 October 2006 06:12 (nineteen years ago)

Also if you cut off Bumper of my SUV before the end you miss the singer shooting herself in the foot with her own hypocrisy.

Ed (dali), Friday, 6 October 2006 06:17 (nineteen years ago)

You all missed Extras.

I think it is good to fancy married women.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 6 October 2006 06:20 (nineteen years ago)

Well that was all very enjoyable indeed; nice to hear one of the lesser-played tracks from the second Wham! album...

Some admin questions:
1. Whose names came out of the DJ draw then?

2. I've had temporary ID amnesia/mental block about the only track I actually got up and danced to...Miss Kittin and/or Felix I think, but confirmation would be much appreciated (Carsmile was manning the decks at the time).

3. Also urgent and key ID required for track 14 on Balladism CD which is rather awesome since I need to own whatever album it's from at some point this weekend.

4. Finally, re. tracks 8 and 9 on the same CD - good call, chaps! :-)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 6 October 2006 07:11 (nineteen years ago)

14 is "Waiting Rooms" by Simon Warner, from the album of the same name. Full tracklist to follow when I get to work.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 6 October 2006 07:14 (nineteen years ago)

Good heavens, the MVE bargain basement stalwart! Excellent!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 6 October 2006 07:17 (nineteen years ago)

Marcello - the track was by Komatron, the one that sounded like Where's Your Head At, right?

I feel quite perky, mostly due to surprise chucking-out time and sticking to IPA most of the night. Carsmile's My Chemical Romance moment was the biggest slaying of a dancefloor I've ever seen, but everyone was boshing reliably by the end.

Also the strange three-person holding hands twirly arm dance thing that was happening during LDN was such a feat of physics it made it worth listening to that really annoying Lily Allen song.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 6 October 2006 07:18 (nineteen years ago)

Komatrohn, even.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 6 October 2006 07:21 (nineteen years ago)

I have a photo now, of the Lex enjoying the Allen.

It's impossible and inadvisable not to fancy certain married women, just because someone else got the question right already doesn't mean you have to pretend you don't know the answer :)

You never said it was kicking out at pub time

Of course they did, it's been that way both times, 7-11.30 subject to discretion etc.

Names out of the hat = Meg, Cis, Flyboy.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 6 October 2006 07:36 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, that sounds about right...someone ought to release his stuff in Britain...certainly much more exciting than anything on the current BJaxx album (Matt/Komatrohn xpost).

As a shortly-to-be-married man, rearrange the following words IT TRY DON'T to reveal my unsurprising views on this topical issue... ;-)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 6 October 2006 07:41 (nineteen years ago)

TS: Mick Ralphs v. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 6 October 2006 08:00 (nineteen years ago)

Interesting how in Diary Of A Rock 'N' Roll Star Ian Hunter considers himself still to be 100% faithful to Trudy even though he is clearly working his way through several groupies per night.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 6 October 2006 08:06 (nineteen years ago)

Hold on, wasn't he married to someone else (w/ kiddies) when he met Trudy anyway?

TS: Mick Ralphs v. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 6 October 2006 08:08 (nineteen years ago)

Indeed. He kept very quiet about that in the book.

Tom, can I trust that remix of Strawberry Fields Forever will be shared in the usual places soon?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 6 October 2006 08:32 (nineteen years ago)

"That remix" is of course the cover version by CANDY FLIP!

And yes.

it is a good name for a band though.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 6 October 2006 08:45 (nineteen years ago)

Ed (dali), Friday, 6 October 2006 08:57 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder if Burberry have ever considered using "Strawberry Fields Forever" in their advertising, you know, "Burberry Clothes Forever" or sumthin'

TS: Mick Ralphs v. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 6 October 2006 08:59 (nineteen years ago)

Photos of Candy Flip Konal, please!

I am not suggesting anyone should act upon their fancies re: married ladies. That would be bad and wrong.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 6 October 2006 08:59 (nineteen years ago)

Did anyone pick up a big bunch of keys at the union tavern? Emsk discovered she'd lost hers after we left the pakenham. I'm going to pop back there at lunchtime but I'm just checking with people in case they found some.

Ed (dali), Friday, 6 October 2006 09:10 (nineteen years ago)

ARRRGGGGHHH, did I miss Candy Flip? that is the WORST BAGGY RECORD EVER MADE. Maybe even the worst record ever made.

Arrived at club just at kicking out time, boo, and barely had chance to neck glass of illicit champagne. and thanks to The lex or being sensible and forcing me to leap through the window of sensibleness and dragging me away bodily from the BAD MANG that is TISSP!.

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Friday, 6 October 2006 09:11 (nineteen years ago)

We arrived drunk, and skeptical, and maybe a little rude (that was us booing 'SUV'; not that I regret that), but eventually we (the whole group!) came around and learned to love the poptimism. Ended up being a great night.

Also, we ended the night with a cab ride to Brick Lane JUST TO GET BAGELS, before getting in a cab again back to W2.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 6 October 2006 09:40 (nineteen years ago)

tim's klf/st etienne/althea & donna run was INSPIRED.

YES

thank you poptimists, i love you.

arrived and got a fit of the MASSIVE PARANOIAS ARGH after like 5 minutes. oh well let's just drink it away har har > everything went rapidly uphill from there. as mentioned elsewhere i went home via piccadilly, i don't know why but i got home at like 6 or something (???). i found my keys. i didn't lose my mp3 player.

emsk ( emsk), Friday, 6 October 2006 09:40 (nineteen years ago)

Ed (dali), Friday, 6 October 2006 09:41 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, 'Beigels' (TOTALLY OLD SCHOOL).

g00blar (gooblar), Friday, 6 October 2006 09:46 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think I could have eaten a thing, I was so stuffed with Welsh Rarebit and (not) Pecan Pie! Especially not beigels! I could barely drink, as it was!

TS: Mick Ralphs v. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 6 October 2006 09:48 (nineteen years ago)

emsk ( emsk), Friday, 6 October 2006 09:48 (nineteen years ago)

Or, rather, old shul?

TS: Mick Ralphs v. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 6 October 2006 09:49 (nineteen years ago)

Oh my god, Emsk, your boots totally gave me The Horn. I apologise for my insensate slathering over your outfit, but you looked bloody good. You're quite lucky you didn't get lezzed up! ;-)

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Friday, 6 October 2006 09:55 (nineteen years ago)

andrew what do your texts mean?

The first one is just me explaining that I didn't go on to further ruin because my voice was already a rasping croak, and you were probably going somewhere even less ventilated AND THEN SMOKING. Also that I meant to ask Sande when she was playing next, but you ran away too quickly!

The second one is suggesting that I have delegated to you a moral duty, previously undertaken by me, to one of the more helpless members of our community. Though I got the impression this may have been the blind leading the blind :)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 6 October 2006 09:58 (nineteen years ago)

The blind drunk leading the blinder drunk etc

TS: Mick Ralphs v. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 6 October 2006 10:01 (nineteen years ago)

apols for the early finish, but the mad bloke next door is complaining about the extractor fan being too loud, never mind the music...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 6 October 2006 10:19 (nineteen years ago)

I think Poptimism needs a SUBWOOFER. There was an awful lot of trebly scree last night.

Good venue though - the non-ILXors there for Tim H's birthday had a couple of tables to themselves downstairs and everyone else was stompin' upstairs. Ideal.

My own highlight was being asked by Colette "because you're a father and you care about people" to verify whether, just by inspecting their heads, her cycle helmet would fit AF's bonce. I erred on the side of caution and said no.

Marcello looked very swish in that jacket.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 6 October 2006 10:31 (nineteen years ago)

I think Colette was asking for advanced science, IE how much larger my head was than hers, expressed as a percentage.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 6 October 2006 10:35 (nineteen years ago)

I have to say that I was less than impressed by the nosh on offer at the Golden Fish Bar on Farringdon Road.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 6 October 2006 10:39 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, sorry, AF. It was very loud in there. 8.4%, if that's any use to you now.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 6 October 2006 11:29 (nineteen years ago)

John Waite! I was trying to recall his name last night, but my befuddled brain kept coming up with Tom Waits, which I knew was very wrong.

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Friday, 6 October 2006 11:29 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, I'm looking forward to listening to it now. (Not that I wasn't before, of course).

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 6 October 2006 12:03 (nineteen years ago)

I thought Ken's comment was v. funny. Especially as TISSP's gf and I had been laughing lamenting over his almost comical state of inebriation.

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Friday, 6 October 2006 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

:-D

ken c (ken c), Friday, 6 October 2006 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

Also, the very idea of The Lex cockblocking is inherently funny.

TISSP!: Kate!!! Come back to Cambridge with us and listen to my post-rock records!
The Lex: Post-Rock? What is post rock? I have never heard of post rock.
TISSP!: You know, post rock! Like, non-traditional arrangements, and played on non-traditional instruments. With BEARDS!!! Like, er, Godspeed! You Black Emporer!
The Lex: What apalling punctuation! And rock music is ghastly! Kate, come away from that ghastly bearded, poorly punctuated man and leap through the window of sensible with me.

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Friday, 6 October 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

Also, the very idea of The Lex cockblocking is inherently funny.

But not as funny as the reality of The Lex dancing to Lily Allen

Mike Giggler (Dada), Friday, 6 October 2006 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

I almost tipped my chair over with laughter.

No, I remember that! And I mean it. Seems like I've been saying it for a while, but things are starting to creep forward re/ actually doing it.

Dude, you've been saying *we* could play your Cambridge ILX festival for ages.

Yeah, I know. But like I say, things are moving forward now!

you win again, gravity! (tissp), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

Have you got a location for said festival? ? If so I know a man with a Rig.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

::swoons::

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

Is that like a big truck?

g00blar (gooblar), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

No, it's a like a big sound system.

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, can we redefine "festival" as "night", which is slightly more accurate. As for locations, there are a couple to consider.

you win again, gravity! (tissp), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

Can't we do it on the back of a truck in the Cambridge countryside?

Three In A Bed Socks Romp (kate), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

xpost
We should do it at the big sound system, no?

g00blar (gooblar), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

Uh-oh, at this rate i cn imaging an Oxford vs Cambridge Turck Festival Race on the Thames in a

(I hate doing the audit response).

Hey, maybe to distract myself I might post the date of the next Poptimism...

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

The big sound system moves around and requires a venue in which to be set up.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

tissp and his gf were total treats - so did you ever make it hitchin or were you wandering aimlessly through arlesey?

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

We got to Hitchin eventually. About 3.30am or something if I remember correctly!

you win again, gravity! (tissp), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

What, at 3am?

you win again, gravity! (tissp), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

no, the morning before at about 8am, a colleague lives nearby and we went up to a meeting together

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 21:09 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, right. I ask because we did see exactly one other person, and it would've been amusing if it was you.
