Can someone explain me blogs?

Blogs are one Internet thing which has always remained a mystery to me. Are they like public diaries? (And if so, isn't the whole idea of a diary that it's not public?) Why do people keep them? Why do people read them?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 21 September 2006 03:23 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, I'm finally convinced you are fake Tuomas.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 September 2006 03:27 (nineteen years ago)

haven't you always wanted your own newspaper column tuomas? this way you can. plus nobody ever has to know it's there!

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Thursday, 21 September 2006 03:29 (nineteen years ago)

the only blogs i read regularly are about Australian politics

gem (trisk), Thursday, 21 September 2006 03:30 (nineteen years ago)

I can't answer for everyone, but a lot of my friends have started them when they graduated college to help keep in touch. Personal e-mails are great, but hard to write to a lot of people frequently, and blogs are increasingly seen as better than mass e-mails because you have to sign on to read them, instead of having them invade your inbox.

I'm not sure why I have one, really. I used to keep volumes and volumes of paper diaries, and the blog holds much of the same content (censored), but is more attractive because I can use it to procrastinate while "writing essays". Oddly, I feel more like I've had a conversation after writing in a paper diary, I suppose because I actually think things through in it.

I read them either because I want to keep up with people I know or because they're interesting in content or style.

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 21 September 2006 03:31 (nineteen years ago)

So they're more like columns than diaries? The ones I've seen have been comic or or music related, but I've gathered there are lot of blogs that are more personal. I guess I can see the point of doing a column, except that why write it if you're not sure anyone reads it?

(x-post)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 21 September 2006 03:33 (nineteen years ago)

i've heard they're all pretty stupid except for some music ones

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Thursday, 21 September 2006 03:35 (nineteen years ago)

i think a lot of the column-style ones are written by people who feel they are part of a wider sort of 'blog-community', all hyperlinked together. They correspond by commenting on each other's columns, so no doubt they are sure that people are reading it.

interestingly, the only personal sort of blog I think I've ever been really touched or blown away by was that one of Marcello Carlin's which I had a look at the other week when he posted about his joy at being engaged. pretty amazing stuff i thought.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 21 September 2006 03:37 (nineteen years ago)

i think a lot of the column-style ones are written by people who feel they are part of a wider sort of 'blog-community', all hyperlinked together.

Is this what the word "blogosphere" relates to, because I've seen it used on ILX?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 21 September 2006 03:41 (nineteen years ago)

sorry, i don't really know anything about blogging. i haven't a clue what 'blogosphere' means. i'm sure someone else does though.

A quote from J.G. Ballard - "Telephone: a shrine to the desperate hope that one day the world will listen to us."

badg (badg), Thursday, 21 September 2006 08:52 (nineteen years ago)

Blogs let people show off/dress up and poeticise their lives, strengthen and maintain illusion of individuality, share music and other cool things with others (DIY portals). People are desperate to be heard in an increasingly noisy world. I can't believe they are a mystery to other people frankly, esp. those who are pretty exhibitionist or happy to share personal details with people they don't really know themselves.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 21 September 2006 08:58 (nineteen years ago)

you can post your nudie pics on them and expand on your feminist ideas.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:03 (nineteen years ago)

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:21 (nineteen years ago)

Ah yes and no, to all the beautiful people out there who love Greer.

I mean, seriously, what's not to understand? You love to write, you want to share your thoughts,... A bit like here, no?

harsh

gem (trisk), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:39 (nineteen years ago)

it is kind of true. at a certain point his thing does just resemble a slightly kinkified torygraph worldview.

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:42 (nineteen years ago)

No, he really did. It's like he sees examples of the alienating effects of modern life all around him, but he doesn't have anything to say about them except a fogeyish "isn't this awful" response, followed by equating football with brainwashing and Nazi Germany. Sophisticated.

Everything Is Ill-Educated (noodle vague), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:43 (nineteen years ago)

To be fair, a good writer needn't be a good speaker. But I'm not convinced he's done very much great writing either.

Everything Is Ill-Educated (noodle vague), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:45 (nineteen years ago)

I'd say his thing probably more resembles a battered slug

badg (badg), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:45 (nineteen years ago)

I understand ILE, 'cause it's a discussion, not a monologue. And I don't share everything here, just because I've posted undie pics of myself doesn't mean there aren't any personal issues I wouldn't talk about here, it's just that I don't think undie pics are a particularly serious thing.

Then again, maybe I don't understand regular diaries either... I'm the sort of person who always talks about his issues with other people rather than writing them down.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:45 (nineteen years ago)

HE WRITES, AIRING HIS ISSUES.

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:51 (nineteen years ago)

I meant writing down in a monologue rather than a dialogue sense.I think ILE is like a conversation rather than a diary.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:55 (nineteen years ago)

Blogs are often conversational too - but the emphasis on the initial 'seed content' is much greater.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 21 September 2006 09:59 (nineteen years ago)

i only really like mp3 blogs (for the mp3s obv) and certain collaborative blogs (irreverent or news-based) - the advantages of both should be apparent. never got into the critic blogs that much tho i do think some of them are v useful and interesting.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 21 September 2006 10:02 (nineteen years ago)

EH MP3 Blogs are so passe. ;-) It's all about them video blogs. So it seems.

Srsly I don't really like anything but text blogs (when it comes to blogs).

But it's not like they write EVERYTHING down.

There's many different types: music blogs, philosophy blogs, MP3 blogs,...

You write it down so as to get insight in your toughts (and also communicate them to the public). The more you talk/write, the better you understand.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 21 September 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

I've had a blog for about ten months, and I don't really get it yet. I think you're supposed to pick over the banal minutiae of your life- while people you don't know congratulate you about getting out of bed that morning- but I just bang on about records.

Buffalo Stan (Buffalo Stan), Thursday, 21 September 2006 11:00 (nineteen years ago)

There's no one single reason for a blog. It depends on the person behind it.

"Can you explain me blogs?" doesn't realise make sense, any more than 'explain me books'. The explanation is in the reading of them.

I love reading blogs personally, and the author of one of the very best blogs posts on ILM fairly regularly (mike of troubled diva fame).

Bob Six (bobbysix), Thursday, 21 September 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

Bob Six (bobbysix), Thursday, 21 September 2006 11:41 (nineteen years ago)

i just like to write about video games in general. also due to my complete inability to 'pick up a phone' its the only place my sister gets to find out about what i've been up to.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 21 September 2006 12:00 (nineteen years ago)

I'd be interested to know whether people think ILX has been impoverished or enriched by the fact that I've taken my thread- or debate-starting action away to Click Opera. I used to do it here, now I do it there. It isn't preaching to the converted; lots of people disagree. Just not quite so vehemently as they did here. It's difficult for people to accuse you of being a troll on your own blog.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 21 September 2006 12:02 (nineteen years ago)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 21 September 2006 12:06 (nineteen years ago)

Oh they have blogs on the internet now?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 21 September 2006 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

You have to understand that I mainly use the Internet for four purposes:

1) e-mail
2) school stuff
3) ILX
4) record and movie reviews,

so there's a lot of stuff out there that I really don't know much about. So when I say "can someone explain me blogs?", it doesn't mean I think blogs are silly, it's simply that I don't know what they do.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 21 September 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

i've had mine for a few years, although its undergone that whole 'scrap it and start again' treatment many, many times. The current one has been like it is for well over a year though.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 21 September 2006 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

4) record and movie reviews,

Tons of blogs do this so surely, you get blogs in at least one aspect.

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Thursday, 21 September 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but I have no idea how to search blogs for certain record reviews, so I mainly use IMDb and Allmusic and Rapreviews.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 21 September 2006 12:28 (nineteen years ago)

Rapreviews.

i read this as 'Rapereviews'

"didn't struggle much, 2/10"

The Real DG (D to thee G), Thursday, 21 September 2006 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

xpost

have you tried google? probably half the results that would come up would be blogs. or just browse different music blogs till you find one whose reviews you like.

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Thursday, 21 September 2006 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

'school stuff'? they let you teach children?!

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Thursday, 21 September 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

When I google for "RECORD NAME + review", most of the results are sites that sell the said record, and usually the reviews they offer are poor or nonexistent. Google needs to have some function which would sort the results into different categories.

Are they like public diaries?

some are like that, and some are not.

(And if so, isn't the whole idea of a diary that it's not public?)

you would think that. I too do not understand the blogs where people discuss the intimate details of their lives in a tiresome manner.

Why do people keep them?

the indiscrete* public diary blogs - because they are insane. The other type - because it is an easy way of shoving content up to the internet.

Why do people read them?

the public diary ones have a certain traincrash appeal. I don't know why anyone reads the other type.

*or indiscreet?

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 21 September 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

Blogs I read include:

1. LiveJournals that are generally diary-like. I read them to keep in touch with friends I don't see all that often. I used to have one myself, but it wasn't really my scene.

2. Music blogs by friends and/or critics I like. I read them for the same reason I read ILM: to hear about new music, get an idea of what my peers are interested in, good writing and debate, etc.

3. Miscellaneous blogs on random subjects I'm interested in. I read Laura Wattenberg's Baby Name Wizard blog, because I'm interested in trends in baby names. I read Michael Berube's blog, because he's an engaging writer, and I like what he has to say about academia and politics.

One good thing about blogs, I've found, is that it provides a window into the writer's personal experience more so than if that same writer is publishing something (say a music review) in a mainstream magazine, in which "objectivity" is favored. I've always appreciated this sort of insight.

And oh yeah, fake Tuomas all the way.

The more personal blogs, such as livejournal and the bulleting&blog system of Myspace seem to be opportunities for people to try out ideas they wouldn't dare say in person, and to get some feedback on them.

There's also the elemtnt of saying things that you'd quite like certain people to hear, but you don't want them to know you want them to know.
Crushes and suchlike.

I have also seen people use this method for passive-aggresive slagging off of people they're pissed off at. Posting shit like "I really hate it when friends DONT CALL YOU when you made PLANS to meet them and they DONT SHOW UP, god I am ANGRY" without naming names...really childish and irritating. But not everyone who has an LJ/blog uses it in that manner. Mostly, Actual Teenagers do so - and give them a break, they're kids.
