Earlier this year, Andrew received notice from the hosts that this was under review, as detailed in this thread:
ADMIN: ILX may have to find somewhere else to live.
At which point a sum of money was raised by ILX people, via Stet, to assist in a move, should it be necessary. Since this time, Andrew appears to have been kept waiting for a decision as to wether the free hosting/bandwidth would be continued or not. On top of this, we have had an ongoing situation with the code the board runs on - as you've all seen, it has a habit of crapping out at seemingly random times, the search function consumes way more resources than it should, and so on.
We now have a solution to all this pending.
The board server is to be hosted, and the board's bandwidth provided by Paper Thin Walls:
http://www.paperthinwalls.com/
Which is an independent music-based community. The server will be located in Alberta, Canada. PTW's facility is secure, reliable, and has plenty of bandwidth to spare for ILX's needs. In return for hosting the site, we will be providing links to PTW on the front page, replacing the "Sponsored by Keypoint" .gif, and the "hosted by wh3rd.net" text link. In addition, there'll be a text link to PTW at the top right of the other forum pages.
Stet is speccing and obtaining a server, using the funds raised to help in the move. Raising a little bit more would be useful, for reasons Stet can explain, I'm crap w/tech-related stuff.
Since Andrew's announcement, there has been a group of ILX people working on a new forum code, this coding affort stalled a bit when Andrew fixed it last time, so Keith, one of the coding group went ahead and wrote new forum code, which we'll be using.
The move looks likely to be happening very soon - in the next 2 weeks, by the look of things.
The following people have all worked to keep the board going:
Stet has been the main mover in keeping this thing (the transition) on the go.
Keith has written the code.
Ned has kept things moving by prodding us when progress has stalled.
Tombot was "cat-herder"/co-ordinator for the coder's group, and the coder's group themselves put together a schema for the new code.
Gerry, Al and Chris W from PTW set us up with a new home.
Andrew has been a great host and admin.
Alan T, Andrew & Zack have kept the thing going when it's crapped out in the past.
ILX people have all made it worth keeping this thing going.
I'm sorry if I forgot anyone!
............
Stet, Ned, Andrew may have more to add, but that's the gist of it.

The new server: Because the new code is much more hardcore -- lots of ILX will run in memory now -- we need a beefy server to host it. The money we've raised is enough for a basic server, but with a bit more, we can get a really good one. I know there were lots of people who missed the last donation drive, so I'll set up another one in a bit. More cash == faster ILX, essentially.
The plan: It depends a bit on the current hosts, but it sounds like Nov 14th is a deadline. While the new code works, it hasn't yet been properly stress-tested. As soon as the new box is in place, we'll ask everybody to start hammering it to see if we can find the cracks. If we find big problems, there might be a weekend of downtime after the old one is down and the new one is up ... but that won't be anything unusual :)

It's worth pointing out too that on the launch the first version of the software isn't going to have anything like as many features as current ilx does, and we'll need to do some real testing/bug fixing for a bit. After that it should be fast and stable though, and then we can cruft it up with oddities like before, ha.

The server move will happen on or around Nov 14. If it goes down for a bit then, that's why.
The new server will run the old code for a bit until everything's across and stable. Then we'll start talking about moving to the new code. No rule changes that I can think of. Feature differences, yes, but more nearer that time.

no, there is an import script for the old messages which is working (new schema is slightly different but should handle everything). keith's done quite a bit in ensuring data integrity (foreign keys etc), i gather.
new code, which i haven't actually seen, is java running on tomcat and mysql 5. i think this is a bit harder on the system but means you can have things like pages and searches cached in memory.

Update: Andrew managed to cajole some extra time out of the hosting people so the final, fixed, move date is November 29. The new server has been ordered from Sun, and we're just waiting on delivery, which should be sometime this week. It'll be configured with both the current software and the environment for nuNuILX.
Once it is in place in Canada, the database has been copied over and the URLs switched to it and everything's cool, we'll start looking at a transition to the new code.

of course you can bitch, but 'our money' seemed a funny term given your stance
blueski, why are you obsessed with turning ilx into fluxblog 2.0?
if you really want to know (and i had a feeling you would), YSI threads were a v popular, successful and useful element on ILM for quite some time before Andrew asked for songs not to be directly linked to anymore. in my experience i find the msg board to be perfect environment for that sort of thing (more than a blog or a p2p client), bar the legal concerns (which affect blogs and p2p clients also of course).
so why are you so against it?
No reinstatement of YSI threads please. It got very annoying the way threads on new releases kept rapidly deteriorating into requests for MP3s
Er, the whole point of YSI threads was to re-route that from threads on releases (which was already happening and has partly curtailed since because of the board becoming reg-only anyway)
― 2 american 4 u (blueski), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 17:19 (eighteen years ago)
different server/host, possibly different rules. there is no harm at all in merely asking the question.
― 2 american 4 u (blueski), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 17:20 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, but it didn't work though. In fact, once it got round that ILM was a great place to request Justice vs Simian - Never Be Alone any MP3 you wanted, it started attracting people here purely for that purpose.

I'd like to see the current rule w/r/t YSIs and suchlike continued, for the reason Ed states, above. I'll email and ask Gerry from PTW what their position is on this tomorrow. Even if they're ok w/it (which I very much doubt), I'm not keen - even with reg-only I can see loads of people registering just to exploit the board for free music if it gets around that it's ok here. I think this is one of those "in an ideal world...." situations that in the real world will get screwed over by people basically taking the piss.
in the past, but I've been less than impressed with the value of the SPARC machines.
I believe Allan shopped around a bit, and the Sun machine was the best deal.

I'm afraid this isn't the case. MyISAM doesn't support referential integrity. I don't think it's a massive deal and still think it's likely the right choice for this; at least, right now. I might look into InnoDB at some stage, for both transactions and RI constraints, but at the same time I'll probably shift the data access to stored procedures to avoid runtime access path calculation and to neatly centralise data logic (though, it's all in one class for now). At a guess, InnoDB is likely to be slower, but support more throughput. Didn't write stored procedures for now as I figured it was more sensible to maintain compatibility with earlier versions of MySQL. Lack of transactional control resulted in the loss of a total of two threads out of ~130,000 on existing ILX, so hardly anything to get keyed up about.
― KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 18:06 (eighteen years ago)
just out of curiousity, how does that cause a whole thread to die
― roc u like a § (ex machina), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 18:08 (eighteen years ago)
They weren't existing threads, incidentally, more like new questions... I should've maybe been a bit clearer.
― KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 18:10 (eighteen years ago)
- move to InnoDB... Would require a good bit of thought and performance testing- write a stored procedure, instead of several pieces of dynamic SQL, which would turn the whole thing into a transaction- or least invasively, write a compensatory transaction (i.e. remove the duff record if the second transaction fails). This is a bit shitty, because the compensatory transaction could possibly fail too, but it is an option that is used in the real world.
I'm not doing anything for now based on the previous failure rate and the fact that there are more important things to do.

― is it ok to oscarbait 'million dollar baby'? (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 01:39 (sixteen years ago)
Pretty much what I said on status -- our current deal runs out at the end of June. I am trying to get in touch with the hosts to work out exactly how much cash they're looking for to keep us on. I'm also chasing up a couple of sponsorship possibilities.
What we need: space for a 1U server with bandwidth greater than 120gb a month. Because of the way the code works (lots of in-memory caches) we really need a machine to ourselves, so shared hosting is pretty much out. We own our server anyway, so that's not a problem.
Last I heard we were looking at a bill of $1200 a year to stay where we are. That figure is pretty out of date though, so I need to get an update on that. Quick comparisons have that being pretty cheap -- there are cheaper 1U colos, but that's usually on way less bandwidth than we need.
Anyway, it's late here, so more tomorrow.

How many users are there on here? In both the #it and DFFD cases, when hosting issues struck and donations were opened up and brought to the fore, the amount collected was significantly above that needed I believe. I'd hate to think things would be any different here.
A small amount from lots of people adds up, to state the obvious. I wouldn't pay vast sums either, but would be happy to do my bit and reckon lots of others would too.

One way of ensuring that ILx doesn't get caught out financially is maybe to set up an annual fee (with login privileges dependent upon paying the fee, otherwise it's strictly read/lurk only) - if we say $5 per poster then a minimum of 600 posters would be enough to keep it going.

Matt, joking aside, you're probably right here. We've got four weeks or so to sort this out, and it's not going to be as easy as last time, because we need ongoing donations this time, not one-offs, as it's the hosting fees we need to pay, not just buy a computer.

I second caek, but I really doubt this would ever come down to subscriptions. Unless there are going to be recurring costs beyond server hosting, a yearly pledge drive would probably do it, unless I'm dramatically overestimating the giving potential here.

tbh there are some people who need to be put off and discouraged from posting to ilx ;-) the other way is pay-per-post a la oyster card. this would wheedle out all the trolls, spammers, freaks and ingrates and encourage regulars to think a little more before they posted something. i've no idea of the logistics involved but can't imagine they're that insurmountable.
on digital spy if you're on an anonymous email address (i.e. hotmail, yahoo etc.) you have to pay a £5 verification fee before they'll let you log on their boards and that seems to work pretty well.
then again i guess the salon idea of watching a 30 second ad before viewing the boards might be workable.

joining fees are only any use if you want to weed out potential posters who aren't taking things seriously or whatever. i don't think there's much need or desire to do that. they're no good at paying ongoing hosting fees, which is why sites that use them also carry ads.

What, if any, are the real objections to using google ads which would be visible only to non-logged-ins? Serious answers only please.
― resistance is feudal (WmC), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 15:58 (sixteen years ago)
No serious objection from me other than that it would be better if we could manage it without ads.
― Keith, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 16:02 (sixteen years ago)
Unless the ways of managing without ads were worse, surely?
― I Got Great Gusto, but Only Some I Can Trust Yo (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 16:03 (sixteen years ago)
i have no objections, my objections are to ads for logged-inners
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 16:03 (sixteen years ago)
Are there any ideas on how much money google ads for unregistered users would raise? I'd offer an estimate but I don't know the amount of non-logged-in traffic, or the amount of revenue that google ads generates per view (or click through).
― ya'll are the ones who don't know things (Z S), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 16:04 (sixteen years ago)
Subscriptions are a terrible idea. I'm not totally opposed to ads appearing for people who aren't logged in, but if we're not after a massive amount of cash then why not do an annual fundraising drive?
― emil.y, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 16:05 (sixteen years ago)
Possible objections to 'verts:
They generally look horrible. We might not agree with the ethics of some of the businesses or products being promoted.

― ice cr?m, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 16:07 (sixteen years ago)
In an hour after I restarted it at midday, there were about 10,000 hits. Can't tell the difference between logged in and not without making code changes, but I'd guess that 75% of these are logged in people, so 2,500. Guessing this translates into about 150,000 per day, which squares up with the roughly 3-4 million hits a month I've looked at in the past.
It looks like Google Ads only generate cash on click through.
― Keith, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 16:07 (sixteen years ago)

A fundraising drive feels unnecessarily uncertain if Adwords can be proved to generate the money the site needs. It wouldn't particularly bother me whether I can see them or not, and I probably get exposed every day to lots and lots of ads from businesses whose ethics I disagree with. I don't think ads appearing on a site imply that you endorse the advertisers.

― is it ok to oscarbait 'million dollar baby'? (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 16:10 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, it's about 3 million a month. It's been 30,000 since midday (here - that's five hours ago).
― Keith, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 16:11 (sixteen years ago)
Of course problem is it's tricky to tell, as it's not views, it's clickthroughs that get you the cash.

i have not done the math - which is pretty complex and not definitive since every ad pays a different price based on an auction + google logarithmic magic model - but if ads were displayed on every non logged in page w/the amount of traffic this site gets it seriously would be not a prob
just google for some articles talking abt how much people are making on their bloggz n whatnot and youll see
― ice cr?m, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 16:15 (sixteen years ago)
how about we spam the site with bots that click on the ads
(presumably that idea is obviously flawed somehow or everyone would be doing it)
― man saves ducklings from (ledge), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 16:16 (sixteen years ago)
Hmm. Well, using these example numbers from this article (estimates of a 1% click through rate and 25 cents per click), the amount of money generated per day would be:
150,000 visitors per day x .25 not logged in = 37,500 unregistered hits per day
37,500 x 1% click through rate = 375 click throughs per day
375 click throughs x 25 cents = $93.75 per day
$93.75 per day x 365.25 days in a year (including leap year) = $34,242 per year
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA ok that article's assumptions of 1% click through rate and 25 cents per click must be wrong. But even if we assume significantly lower assumptions - 0.2% click through rate and 10 cents per click - the total would still come out to...$2739 per year!

OK, let's assume that pay per click has taken a dive in the last year. Now it's 7 cents per click. Also, we'll assume that ILX unregistered users click on ads less than most other people do, because they're too busy looking for guess papers, and use a mere 0.1% click through rate (1 out of every 1000 hits results in someone clicking on an ad). Also, we'll assume that Keith's estimate of 25% of ILX hits as unregistered/not-logged-in is too optimistic, and that the true figure is instead 15%.
With 3.5 million hits a month, that still results in:
3,500,000 hits per month x 15% unregistered = 525,000 unregistered hits per month.
525,000 unregistered hits x 0.1% click through rate = 525 clicks per month
525 clicks per month x 7 cents per click = $36.75 per month, or $441 per year.
And that's with the negative nancy assumptions all around.
― ya'll are the ones who don't know things (Z S), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 16:38 (sixteen years ago)
if you squint so that click looks like dick, that last post is way funnier.

― man saves ducklings from (ledge), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 16:40 (sixteen years ago)

― ice cr?m, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 16:41 (sixteen years ago)

Horrible website but cheapest co-lo I have found:
http://calpop.com/colocation.html. Still looking for around $1200 a year.
― Prince of Persia (Ed), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 16:43 (sixteen years ago)
To sum up:
I think that a reasonable estimate of the revenue from using AdSense on unregistered users only would be $1000-2000 per year. If negative nancy assumptions are used, drop that to $500 (which would still be almost half of the money needed and make fundraising less of a hassle), and if positive polly assumptions are used we could be on the internet together in tropical paradise.
― ya'll are the ones who don't know things (Z S), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 16:46 (sixteen years ago)

― Keith, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 16:48 (sixteen years ago)
It would be easy enough to run an experiment.
There are some staggeringly bad reviews of that company I just posted a link too.
Realistically I think we are probably looking at $2000 a year for our needs and if that gives us a little contingency cushion then so much the better.

The biggest downside to using Adsense/Adwords, I think, is the big argument that would be sure to come if it brings in much more revenue than we need for expenses. I think all the other downsides mentioned crumble pretty quickly. I think it's an argument worth having, if only to spend a week nominating charities to give it to and then another month polling the top 30 nominations.

― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 18:34 (sixteen years ago)
just start a paypal collection. I'm sure there are enough users who would contribute money. I think asking upwards of 30 or 40 bucks isn't ridiculous. People who spend all day here and think it's ridiculous to be expected to pony up 10 dollars are being cheap.
― dan selzer, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 18:36 (sixteen years ago)
Sorry, which option, Hoos? Although I don't see anything so far that would be a big deal to code. That said, thanks Whiney for considering it - it can get a bit annoying sometimes when people think it programs itself.

It is odd to me that we assume now that ads would be the default position. If we get enough in donations, then we can have it without ads, for however long the cash pays for it. If we don't get enough, then we'd better look into ads. This seems like the sensible way round to do it, rather than starting with ads. It's also possible neither or these options will raise enough money.

Serious question for people pro-ads: Have you ever visited SomethingAwful's forums? If I were an unregistered visitor and I was confronted by that, I would be very moved to never register in the first place. And since I imagine we all want to attract new posters at some point, turning them away with ugliness might be something worth avoiding. Also, SA now charges for registration, I believe? I just feel like going down this route may have some ugly baggage attached. Tiers of readers seems like something worth avoiding. Obviously if we don't have another choice, I think we should implement ads because ILX + ads > no ILX. But if there's another option, why not use it?

There's no contract signed, there's no say. You donate to help keep it alive. The powers that be kick you off. Are you going to sue for breach of contract? You know what you're getting into.
So make it a subscription for those who want to keep it going. How much does this all cost? 100 responsible users with the tiniest amount of disposable income donate every year and keep the thing running for themselves and everyone else.
Or use google ads down the right side. They don't bother me, though I don't think they'll get any clickthroughs. I just think it's obnoxious for everybody to refuse to pay to keep something like this alive.
― dan selzer, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 19:27 (sixteen years ago)
I think people mostly are okay with paying to keep it alive, but are mildly amused at some folks' dainty horror of adverts. Plus you can look at e.g. the threads discussing the workings of SBs and see plenty of people giving it the old "I donated how dare you do this?" schtick.

After sitting outside for an hour with a glass of wine and contemplating the universe, once again I'll advocate for a hybrid approach: quick (probably <2 days) donation campaign to raise the cash that is needed now, then a trial period for google ads for unregistered users. Do it for a month, see how much money comes in. Fuck, start a thread called "We're gonna be rich" where every month we post how much ad revenue came in. If it works, we don't have to worry about this every year. If it sorta works, we still don't need to raise as much cash the following year. And if it doesn't work at all (not likely btw), big whoop.
There's no need to choose for one over the other. Do both.

What about if when you clicked on the ads you got a warning first?
Please be aware that by confirming this action, you are registering your wish to see some horrible horrible business who sell products for money and probably they all eat babies or something. Once you have allowed yourself to become soiled with the foul dung of commerce, you will automatically be required to sell your firstborn into slavery and donate your home to be turned into a bordello for illegal child immigrants. And may God have mercy on your soul.

I just didn't think typical ILX users would fit the demographic. I've never seen a google ad that was interesting, or maybe mostly I just trained myself to ignore them as soon as I've seen them.

i have google ads on a couple of weblogs, all of which get virtually no visitors, YET i make 10 bucks a year through these things... SO, with ILX getting all all that massive traffic + loads of accidental hits on google searches, those ads are bound to do fine.
(and i have no problem with ads on the site, as long as they are text ads)

I enjoy how the ad argument is a clone of last time, down to "we understand that donations can and have paid for ILX in the past - but why turn down free money?!", chiding of those opposed as crypto-Marxist Utopians and fear of ruining the ILX aesthetic. Well played, all.
The subscription idea sucks, tho.

The difference between perpetual ads and ads-free is like the difference between when I am driving a bus full of 50 schoolkids and an empty bus. Empty is much quieter. It is easier to drive and less aggravating. Does that mean I "fear" kids?

― Aimless, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 20:22 (sixteen years ago)
...why don't you just register so you can kick the 50 schoolkids off? Then you can be inside drinking martinis with the rest of us while looking outside the window and wondering why fools are driving buses filled with 50 children.

― ya'll are the ones who don't know things (Z S), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 20:24 (sixteen years ago)
ILXors are the schoolkids on the bus, lurkers are our parents who are staying at home and paying for our trip.
― StanM, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 20:24 (sixteen years ago)
why don't they have 50 buses with one child each inside
― harbl, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 20:24 (sixteen years ago)
The better bus analogy is that the idea is to put ads on the outside of the bus; people on the bus can't see them and you have to "buy a ticket" (ie, register) to get on the bus and therefore not see the ads on the sides.
― Obama seems to have the views of a 21-year-old Hispanic girl (HI DERE), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 20:26 (sixteen years ago)
But I want to walk, and not see bus ads!

― I Got Great Gusto, but Only Some I Can Trust Yo (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 20:27 (sixteen years ago)
And there are webcams in the bus so the people on the outside can see what's going on inside, who gets thrown off and where the trip ends.
― StanM, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 20:27 (sixteen years ago)

― hot boobs of lohna (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 20:27 (sixteen years ago)

I've put up a donation widget. The total's $100 more than the bill, cos there's a cut to paypal, and then the conversion to GBP, and then back out to our Canadian pals etc.
I think ads are a worthwhile test, but if we raise the cash for a year's hosting right now that gives us a lot more breathing room to fight about them.

Can I give people gifts that are certificates saying a charitable donation has been made in their name to ILX?

Nah, I've already forgotten how much I donated. Let's go again!

If the rest of the world cared about Africa as much as we care about ILX, we'd find ourselves a good step of the way towards ending world hunger in a matter of minutes.

I guess I just don't understand why we would suddenly want to use ads when we've only just raised enough money in an hour to host the thing for a year. This is with just over 60 or so people donating out of a community of more than 3000 active users and growing. It doesn't seem unreasonable to assume we could raise a similar amount of cash next year quite easily.
So out of interest, proponents of ads... Why do you want them? Do you think they would add to the site, or do you think we won't be able to raise enough money ourselves? Or some other reason?
― Keith, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 22:47 (sixteen years ago)
Oops, wrong thread.
― Keith, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 22:48 (sixteen years ago)
Don't feel strongly either way but am bemused at ad hatred. I kind of buy the aesthetic argument but I don't think Adwords are that intrusive. Prefer ads slightly to donations as it seems a more egalitarian and potentially consistent method of paying for hosting. Will probably enjoy zinging anybody in future who gets hissy cos they donated so maybe I should just leave it and go with the flow.
― ChipIn Dale (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 22:51 (sixteen years ago)
Sure, but if you're addressing my point, it's not stuffed full of ad hatred, just asking why we would deliberately do it, if there doesn't appear to be a need.
― Keith, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 22:53 (sixteen years ago)
Oh I don't think you were full of ad hatred I was just saying why I (slightly) preferred them to fundraising drives.
― ChipIn Dale (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 22:54 (sixteen years ago)
Obviously we don't need the ads to pull the cash together every year, but I worry about donation fatigue in the future. If we raked in a huge sum from ads but couldn't agree on something fun to do with it (WORLD FAP is fun to talk about but I guess probably won't ever actually happen), it would be really gratifying to turn this timewasting site into money for charities.

If the widget were to go back up for a few days or a week (giving everybody a shot at donating no matter what time zone they're in) and we got several years' worth of hosting money, I'd totally shut up about wanting ads on the site.

― hugging used to mean something (call all destroyer), Wednesday, 3 June 2009 00:41 (sixteen years ago)
if it will help, i'll auction off the right to my donation. you can send me the money, and i'll publicly give you credit for supporting ilx. (some handling fees may apply.)
― would you ask tom petty that? (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 3 June 2009 00:48 (sixteen years ago)
xxp not in my experience. onus is on paypal account holder to declare transactions. paypal is not switzerland though -- they will surrender info if asked.
another problem that just occured to me: this really would need to be set up as a limited company or equivalent to avoid legal liability. once you have an address you give people someone/thing to sue, and you really don't want to be personally liable for that, hence limited liability company.
again, in the strict legal sense all legal/tax concerns apply equally to an annual pledge drive.
― caek, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 00:49 (sixteen years ago)
also another thing occurred to me: running ads on a site that has been known to violate copyright (or making a profit/having money in the bank) is not a good idea.
― caek, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 00:50 (sixteen years ago)
- copyright violations are pretty strictly forbidden and have been for a couple of years now- this donation thing stopped at the amount required for exactly one year of hosting. No profit for anyone.- ads, well, only being considered at the moment, let's see what happens/if it could replace this kind of annual donation thing.
― StanM, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 00:53 (sixteen years ago)
I feel like a happy freeloader now since I was in meetings all afternoon and the total went over fast. Thanks guys!
― mh, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 00:58 (sixteen years ago)
forbidden != doesn't happen. plenty of music sharing still goes on here, and there's a lot of image borrowing too (just because you can hotlink doesn't mean you're necessarily not violating copyright).
i _think_ the site owner is not liable in most jurisdictions (this keeps changing), but i certainly wouldn't want my name on any ownership documents relating to this site, given what goes on here right now, and what could potentially happen on a public website like this in the future.
not making a profit doesn't mean you don't have money in the bank.
― caek, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 00:59 (sixteen years ago)
No, it's still technically $1600 in profit for stet, regardless of whether he chooses to spend it on ILX or canned hams.
― resistance is feudal (WmC), Wednesday, 3 June 2009 01:01 (sixteen years ago)
$1600 in revenue, I guess, not necessarily profit. It's still income.
But not liable for income tax, unless I'm mistaken as it's already been income taxed. Perhaps IHT if it were UK rules, but not with the amount in question.
If everyone had just paid the hosts directly, would that not be effectively the same thing?
― Keith, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 01:06 (sixteen years ago)
The cash raised today is effectively gifts (<3 ty), so no tax required. Different story for ad income. xp
Damn straight about not wanting to have yr name on ownership for this -- there have been threats of lawyers before and doubtless will be again. The current setup is nicely complex and multi-jurisdictional to boot.
― stet, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 01:08 (sixteen years ago)
You're making it sound like Crimes happen on here all the time, but I honestly wouldn't know where to find "plenty of music sharing" on here anywhere.- links to DJ mixes on other sites, ok, but that's quite grey already- linking to images / copy/paste text without proper attribution, ok, but acting on that would mean the end of the entire internet
So there is no legally simple way a limited/non-profit community site like this can exist?
― StanM, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 01:15 (sixteen years ago)
The current setup is nicely complex and multi-jurisdictional to boot.

― Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 01:29 (sixteen years ago)
Look, all bullshit aside, what we've proven is that the next time we run into an issue with hosting, we can easily pull together the money to keep the site afloat, presuming there are enough people on here who give a shit. As it stands now, there's no point in trying to pull some grandiose "we got a barn, let's have a play!" fundraiser via paypal together and ads are simply superfluous. I was glad to donate and next year I'll be glad to see someone else donate. We have a sustainable model.
If there's anything to be learned here, it's that if anyone on this board ever has a kid with a life threatening illness that needs an operation (or if we all just need pizza), the community here is capable of providing a cash net under extreme circumstances. But we probably don't need to complicate stuff just because we CAN make money.
Also: unban cankles.

http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/visual-tracert/ <- type ilxor.com into the "Remote Address" field and click the Proxy Trace button to see the route from your nearest proxy to the ILX server (patience, it can take a short while).
(My traceroute went from Belgium (where I am, obv.) -> Brea -> Culver City -> LA -> Dallas -> Toronto.)
