[ADMIN] DONATE now to make ilx zoom (Part II) (Edit - we are now discussing the merits of running ads on ILX)

As you probably know, ILX is moving soon. Pash explains it all here:
[ADMIN] Future hosting of ILXor.com

As part of this move, we need to buy a new server to run ILX on, because we don't own the current one. We already have a chunk of money that was raised a few months ago -- in an incredible 11 hours! -- to cover any emergency hosting costs. That cash will buy us a server, but it'd be a bit bare-bones. With a bit more, we'll be able to get something faster and roomier, which the new code really needs.

If you donated last time, your work here is done. If you missed the last round, though, this is your chance. You can donate here:
http://www.dropcash.com/campaign/bonaldi/ilx_server/

Note: The "goal" on that page is spurious. We don't have to reach the goal to buy the new server. That said: more money == more server.

(If you're on one of the other boards, please spread the word! We'll all be moving!)

Can I send you a (UK) cheque?

Going Through The Motions (kate), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:10 (eighteen years ago)

Sure can. I'll email you just now

stet (stet), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

is the idea to buy a new dedicated server independent of paperthinwalls? where would the purchased server be kept?

;_; (blueski), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

Yes and no: we buy a server, and send it to Paperthinwalls's host in Candaa, who plug it in to the net for us.

stet (stet), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:25 (eighteen years ago)

What spec of server have we chosen?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

BIG N MEAN

teh_kit returns! (g-kit), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:33 (eighteen years ago)

It's a S_n Fire, which we should be getting a discount price for. 3ghz, with 2gb of memory (Keith's done testing, and that's more than enough to keep a huge cache)

stet (stet), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

Yay! Done. I own ILX now. All of you, sit up and fly straight. Less of that sort of thing. You there! Be quiet!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

S_lar1s or L1n_x?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:41 (eighteen years ago)

S_lar1s. L1n_x is an option, but I don't kno it as well as S_l

stet (stet), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

20% in 90 minutes... This is turning into a record breaking fund drive!

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 2 November 2006 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

Done. Great thanks to everyone taking care of this whole affair.

is anyone anticipating the new Baaderonixx? (baaderonixx), Thursday, 2 November 2006 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

Done.

Giving a few bucks was the easy bit - many thanks to all of you who are doing the hard work. It's much appreciated.

C J (C J), Thursday, 2 November 2006 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

Already a third of the way there!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

if we donate will we be able to steal some of the server space and bandwidth?

although i guess that'd be defeating the point somewhat of the donation......

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

We're not paying for the bandwidth: PTW are donating it, so not really, no.

stet (stet), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

Holy shit, did I see that right? Did someone just kick down 500 dollars in the last few minutes?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

Yep, that's right. wow.

stet (stet), Thursday, 2 November 2006 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

I mean ... fuck.
I'm keeping names anonymous unless donors tell me otherwise, tho.

stet (stet), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

so the new ilx server can't just run a cheeky ilx only counterstrike server on the side?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

xpost it's okay you can tell them my name stet.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

$450 to go. Nice.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

GOOD QUESTION

teh_kit returns! (g-kit), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

also: what's happening to the old server?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

That is Andrew's, to do with what he wants.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

Selling it on ebay.

C J (C J), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

(can i have my $10 back?)

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

just kidding

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

(it's more like $4 now probably with depreciation)

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

ken, put it towards the ILGCS:S server.

teh_kit returns! (g-kit), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

via me. i take chq.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

ram up the beef

gbx (skowly), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

first you must locate it

banrique (blueski), Thursday, 2 November 2006 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

No point in buying more than 4GB though unless we get a 64-bit version of Solaris. My dumb workplace bought more memory for our Sun servers than their kernel version can use. So dumb.

FACTS: I'M A WAITER (TOMBOT), Thursday, 2 November 2006 17:03 (eighteen years ago)

Arf. Keith's done testing, and he reckons 4gb would probably be overkill, so I'd cap it at that aynway.

stet (stet), Thursday, 2 November 2006 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

Any overflow should probably go to a pot in case this happens again, and we should also probly think about google ads for unreg ppl. These decisions aren't for me tho.

stet (stet), Thursday, 2 November 2006 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

bumpity

Ed (dali), Thursday, 2 November 2006 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

remind me again why he don't host google text ads?

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Thursday, 2 November 2006 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

we could do -- and probly should do in the new place, but that's not going to raise enough cash to buy a new server in the next two or three days, which is all the time we have.

stet (stet), Thursday, 2 November 2006 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

I'd rather not, if we can avoid it. We've done ok with donation drives every now and again. one of the things that has made ILX good has been the simple interface and the lakc of shilling for the man.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 2 November 2006 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

can i hold a donation drive to delete ilx

and what (ooo), Thursday, 2 November 2006 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

if people want to argue the merits of google ads as the key solution they need to be building a time machine and going back a few months to when this discussion first began :/

i agree with stet, fwiw: google ads for non-logged-in users is a reasonable idea. and one that was discussed a few months back. but fuck it, makes no difference to me, really.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 2 November 2006 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

I was on holiday.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 2 November 2006 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

that's no excuse.*

(* it is really - a good one - and i have no comeback.)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 2 November 2006 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

There is no holiday from ILX.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Friday, 3 November 2006 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

Who owns ILX? Tom E, Andrew NF, the coding team, anyone who posted before December 31st 2001, Philip Greenspun?

Woo! That means I own ILX. No ads, please. I phoned Philip Greenspun and he agreed they were ridiculous.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 4 November 2006 00:04 (eighteen years ago)

so ads it is then.

am0n (am0n), Saturday, 4 November 2006 00:24 (eighteen years ago)

ilx is owned by whoever icann says it's owned by

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Saturday, 4 November 2006 00:53 (eighteen years ago)

If we raise more than the goal, can we like, dunno, give Andrew a thankyou present (a shirt or something)?

The thought is appreciated, but I feel that's unnecessary and I wouldn't accept such a thing.

Andrew (enneff), Saturday, 4 November 2006 00:54 (eighteen years ago)

what shows you watch

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Saturday, 4 November 2006 00:56 (eighteen years ago)

Buffy DVDs for Andrew!

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Saturday, 4 November 2006 02:24 (eighteen years ago)

Please, make it Herzog or Wim Wenders DVD's only, please! (ps: I already have the Herzog/Kinsky box set.)

Actually, if you really have to give me something:

We have the Herzog box, it is awesome.

I'm down for runnin' up on them crackers in the city hall... (papa november), Saturday, 4 November 2006 04:34 (eighteen years ago)

We watched Aguirre last night, and then watched it with the commentary. Herzog is the man.

Andrew (enneff), Saturday, 4 November 2006 05:07 (eighteen years ago)

YOU GET NOTHING

manute lol (sanskrit), Saturday, 4 November 2006 05:10 (eighteen years ago)

Herzog is the man.

there's something so strange abt this statement, can't say it's wrong, still...

jhoshea megafauna (scoopsnoodle), Saturday, 4 November 2006 08:55 (eighteen years ago)

The thought is appreciated, but I feel that's unnecessary and I wouldn't accept such a thing.

Right, it's not like he would wear it. Haven't you seen the what do you look like threads?

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Saturday, 4 November 2006 09:08 (eighteen years ago)

(I'm glad somebody got it.)

Andrew (enneff), Saturday, 4 November 2006 11:28 (eighteen years ago)

Back from a couple of days offline.

It's fucking incredible that people raised the $$ for the server upgrade so quickly, totally fantastic. Many, many thanks.

I don't have any opinion w/r/t google ads other than some vague feeling that one less advert is one less advert.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 4 November 2006 13:54 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder what we'll play for you tonight
Something heavy or something light
Something to set your soul alight
I wonder how we'll answer when you say
"We don't like you - go away,
"Come back when you've learnt to play"

I wonder what we'll do when things go wrong
When we're half-way through
our favourite song
We look up and the audience has gone
Will we feel a little bit obscure
Think "we're not needed here,
"We must be new wave
- they'll like us next year"

The Wonders don't care
- we don't give a damn

i've yet to witness this 'zoom' that ilx is supposed to perform

ken c (ken c), Monday, 5 February 2007 12:48 (eighteen years ago)

This is still the zoomless old code.

StanM (StanM), Monday, 5 February 2007 12:53 (eighteen years ago)

I was wondering about that. Do we have any updates on the progress of the new code?

Are you on Linux, Ken? Some linux types have been having trouble connecting to the new hosts. I can't get in at all from my phone. They're looking into it.

do you think upgrading to windows vista penultimate would help? i've seen those little windows zoom on tv.

They zoom so fast you can't even see "not representative of actual speed" in the smallprint.

so how does this bitch work? PTW pay for just for the little link in the upper right corner?

Crêpe, Saturday, 22 December 2007 14:29 (seventeen years ago)

I think it's the other way round: they donate bandwidth and ILX thanks/pays them by displaying the link.

StanM, Saturday, 22 December 2007 15:28 (seventeen years ago)

so we got some advertising

elan, Saturday, 22 December 2007 18:30 (seventeen years ago)

As advertsinig goes, that logo-link to PTW qualifies as practically non-existent. Thank goodness.

Aimless, Saturday, 22 December 2007 19:03 (seventeen years ago)

The Google contextual advertising meta-humor potential of ILX is frying my imagination.

The lady in the GT Express infomercial takes that chicken-rolled-in-crumbs thing out of the cooker and says, "Doesn't this look like something you could serve to company?"

Like, yay, our days of eating embarrassing-looking meals seasoned with our own lonely tears are finally over. Thanks to the GT Express, we can have guests!

Kerm, Saturday, 22 December 2007 21:34 (seventeen years ago)

Chicken breast is half-moon shaped anyway, so it's an obvious example for her commercial, but a chicken-breast-shaped steak? hmm.

StanM, Saturday, 22 December 2007 21:37 (seventeen years ago)

"See how easy it comes out of there? And then just wipe with a damp cloth - Virtually NO cleanup!"

Can you imagine what these things look like after a month of Leftover Omlettes and "keep the mix in the fridge" Bisquick batter birthday cakes? Boy, I love a seasoned grill.
