Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:38 (eighteen years ago)

I'll start by nominating

Stephen Fry and Owen Wilson.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:46 (eighteen years ago)

Nah, I don't like religious icons.

(xx-post)

I don't know who's Ahmed Johnson either.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:46 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know if I like Owen Wilson but this could just be noseism.

2 american 4 u (blueski), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:46 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno what Brian Blessed does, but he has a cool name.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry, I mean BRIAN BLESSED.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

He does a lot of SHOUTING.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

Who's Stephen Fry? who is owen wilson

This enterprise is doomed to failure.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

Find a person that everyone on ILE has heard of

2 american 4 u (blueski), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

Surely we're are doomed to failure in a world where the LEx lives, he doesn't know who anybody is. Before we can succeed in this quest we must KILL THE LEX.

Ed (dali), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

He does a lot of SHOUTING.

Okay, I think I like him.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:48 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, what about William Shatner? Surely everyone knows who he is, and likes him.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:49 (eighteen years ago)

Russell Brand.

xpost colliding with Stephen Fry, who's 6ft 5, and not recognising him? only if you don't know who he is and all that!

Russell Brand is the silliest suggestion yet. I still think he is a cockfarmer, as I suspect do many other people.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:51 (eighteen years ago)

Russell Brand's a fantastic guess. How about Jeffrey Archer and Ian Huntley?

dommy p is alright WHICH IS A LOT MORE THAN I CAN SAY ABOUT A LOT OF PEOPLE (Dom, Monday, 13 November 2006 10:51 (eighteen years ago)

i hate william shatner!

who is jackie chan?

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:51 (eighteen years ago)

Who's Russel Brand?

Genesis P. Orridge is some sort of musician, right? I have no positive or negative opinion on him.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:51 (eighteen years ago)

i have asked who brian blessed is before, i'm not sure if anyone answered seriously, but i have forgotten, i don't know who he is either

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:52 (eighteen years ago)

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:52 (eighteen years ago)

i don't like comedians.

anyone even tangentially related to the world of comedy is doomed to failure as i HATE THEM ALL.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:53 (eighteen years ago)

Brian Blessed is great, especially as a football pundit (yes, really, UKGTV had him during the world cup, where he just went on about train timetables and the like when the game was a bit crap).

I have no opinions at all on Owen Wilson, but I remain eternally fascinated by his nose, and I don't *dislike* him.

I think UK/US/other bits of the world/whatever mindspace Teh Lex occupies will be the downfall of this thread.

multiple xpost - Lex, you're serious about "who's Jackie Chan?"

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:53 (eighteen years ago)

Jane Horrocks

Dan Castellaneta (sp?)

=== temporary username === (Mark C), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:54 (eighteen years ago)

OK, lets get down to who we all really like.

Lauren Laverne
Ant and Dec
Jayne Middlemiss
Richard Orford
Beth Orton

This is about them as a person, not necessarily about their art or whatever, right?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:54 (eighteen years ago)

Can we assume that The Lex doesn't actively dislike all the people he's never heard of and they can therefore still be included until someone who's heard of them vetoes them?

ONIMO ph34rz teh NOIZE (GerryNemo), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:55 (eighteen years ago)

Ahmed Johnson is a boxer inn'e.

Lex, what have you got against comedians?

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:55 (eighteen years ago)

I dislike Dan Castellaneta after he started making Homer sound more like Scooby-Doo.

2 american 4 u (blueski), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:55 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, Lex dislikes Beth Orton doesn't he, the mad fool!

how dare they try and tell them when to laugh amirite?

Incidentally, Lex, have you heard of Google? It's terribly helpful for finding out who people are.

Lex, William Shatner is not a comedian.

Lauren Laverne

I have no idea who these are... Except that Beth Orton sang on some William Orbit record, or am I wrong?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 13 November 2006 10:58 (eighteen years ago)

I'd say actively dislike would be the criteria to veto them.

but he wasn't wearing what he was wearing in the photo i posted so it doesn't count

2 american 4 u (blueski), Monday, 13 November 2006 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't say he was a football commentator. I said he was a part-time pundit during the World Cup. He sat on a sofa with some other non-footballing pundits (and Barry Fry) and talked entertaining bollocks.

I maintain, as per the other thread, that anyone who knows who Jeff Stelling is would like him. On that basis, I would want to nominate Sid Waddell* as well, but that'll get shouted down all round

*For the Lex: he's a darts commentator, working class hero and inventor of Jossy's Giants**

**For the Lex, pt2: it's a kids TV programme. About football. It was on before your time and you wouldn't like it anyway. It was brilliant.

holy shit i was gonna nominate david zucker but

Zucker, a longtime liberal Democrat, switched to the Republican Party in 2004 due to his concerns about national security and voted for President George W. Bush. A campaign contribution search shows his only contribution to the Republican party or candidates was a $2647 contribution to clubforgrowth.net, a website dedicated to hosting a few political videos including his initial anti-Kerry video. On Oct 10, 2006, The Drudge Report published a link to a political ad that Zucker produced which was featured on Youtube. The ad was intended for use by GOP organizations, but was considered somewhat controversial by GOP Strategists. In a quote from a Drudge Report exclusive:

In the ad, Zucker, producer of SCARY MOVIE 4, recreates former Clinton Secretary of State Madeleine Albright's 2000 visit to North Korea. During the visit, Secretary Albright presented North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il with a basketball autographed by former NBA superstar Michael Jordan.

The actress, Adele Stasilli-Fernandez, playing Secretary Albright is shown presenting Kim Jong Il with the Michael Jordan basketball, painting the walls of Osama bin Laden's Afghanistan cave and turning a blind eye to suicide bombers. In one scene, her skirt rips as she changes the tire of a Middle Eastern dictator's limousine.

One GOP strategist said "jaws dropped" when the ad was first viewed. "Nobody could believe Zucker thought any political organization could use this ad. It makes a point, but it's way over the top."

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 13 November 2006 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry, gear, I was just using "actors" as shorthand for "whole group of people" in general - I should have used "athletes" as well so as not to appear dismissive of a poster rather than a concept. My point, clumsy as it was, that dismissing whole groups of people = cheating slightly. In fact, Travolta nearly transcends the Scientology thing. Nearly.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 13 November 2006 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

I really didn't want to say it but, yeah, Nelson Mandela was married to someone who openly advocated necklacing. I don't think it's inherently ignoble to start up an armed resistance to an unjust regime

With the benefit of hindsight and agreeing with the side who 'won', I can totally agree with you.

In which case I give you Gerry Adams.

Senior member of a violent terrorist organisation, who killed civiliansI don't think it's inherently ignoble to start up an armed resistance to an unjust regime. and the armed oppressor in similar orders of magnitude. Eschewed the active aspect to lead the political wing, while refusing to condemn the armed ones for killing civillians. Became an accepted and respected politician in the parliament he sought to destroy. NOBEL PEACE PRIZE.

xpost to Sundar - he was the man who actively exhorted the ANC to start violent struggle at the All-In African Conference of 1961. He modelled it on Irgun, who were completely indiscriminate who they killed.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 13 November 2006 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

I won't say he wasn't aware of them; I'm certain that's unrealistic. He did speak out against them even though he was originally arrested because he was running a (justified IMO) terrorist organization.

This thread is supposed to be "just a bit of fun" and I'm getting super worked up over it for no good reason. Also aldo's intervening xpost seems to have had characters stripped out of it by the HTML checker because chunks of it make no sense.

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 November 2006 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

Dan, if you're not reading because of what I've said, read my first post again: "irrespective of how just your struggle is". I am in no way saying he didn't do the right thing, but a fuck of a lot of innocent people (both black and white - I mean you don't blow up a factory without killing workers) died in the process.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 13 November 2006 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not sure what part of any of my posts don't make sense Dan.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 13 November 2006 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

Ah, I see now. Remove the second "irrespective of how just your struggle is" and it works.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 13 November 2006 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

I was actually looking at "Senior member of a violent terrorist organisation, who killed civiliansI don't think it's inherently ignoble to start up an armed resistance to an unjust regime. and the armed oppressor in similar orders of magnitude." which might be an accidental copy in a bad spot?

Darramouss (Denton Price), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 00:57 (eighteen years ago)

The difficulties in this thread are numerous.

First, the figure must be 'known' to every ILxor, yet cannot be a member of our community. This one limitation alone reduces the possible candidates to 100% celebrities - entertainers, sports figures, politicians and their ilk. And only the most visible of these.

Next, we do not actually know any of these people. We know their reputations, their public faces, their public gaffes, their personas. It is all quite artificial and heavily mediated.

Although we may accurately enough know and admire their public accomplishments (or deplore them) our 'liking' for them can never have the slightest bit of depth or meaning. It only means we think they have a nice manner or a pleasant smile or something equally shallow - with pure imagination making up about 95% of the content of that 'liking'.

So, I nominate George W. Bush. He's one heckuva likeable guy, dontcha know? Folksy. Warm. Genuine. Not too stuck up. And not afraid of "hard work" either. I must have heard him praise "hard work" a million times! What's not to like?

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 01:02 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry, gbx, but getting caught up with celebrities is like having lots and lots of imaginary friends. Although this does make for some fabulous imaginary tea parties!

More tea, Cameron? And do tell me all about this, uh, kabbala, Madonna! Ooops! Did I pronounce that correctly? Ving, you bad boy, you were laughing at me weren't you? Be that way, you lug, I love you anyway!

Blessed guest-presented City Hospital the other week when I was off work. They had a segment in which a podiatrist had a look at his feet - one assumes as an example of HOW FEET SHOULDN'T EVER LOOK.

He's had problems all his life with flat feet not ideal for someone who does so much walking. I think he also broke his feet in a parachute jump at some point. Anyway, they're seriously fucked up disfigured feet and it's frankly amazing that he managed to climb Everest (oldest man to do so and without oxygen!) on them.

I'm happy to unveto him as long as he keeps his boots on.

No-one's claiming he's the greatest cleverest human being ever to have lived or anything, but within the limitations of this thread, he's a decent shout as someone I imagine it would be difficult to dislike. (xpost, unless you're RJG)

"Newhart sucks? What do you have against entire swaths of professions at a time?"

honestly I've never heard anyone disparage Newhart here, so that's news to me. I have a hard time believing anyone could get THAT worked up about such a harmless guy but whatevs... as for my dismissal of an "entire swath of professions" there was only one profession I objected to and that was pro athletes and what can I say, they're by and large overpaid egotistical buffoons who contribute nothing to the common good and don't produce anything worthy of respect or admiration. I'm not impressed by physical feats nor do I get all jazzed about regional or brand-based competitiveness, which I guess is really the heart of it.

You might also note I made exceptions to this blanket "dismissal", but again whatevs...

It is.

It is indeed The Powerpuff Girls.

I learn something every day.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

Surely none of you would veto Stephen Hawking?

Maria :D (Maria D.), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

I would. He nicked my parking space once. Bastard.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

I've never understood the appeal of the Fall.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

Did anyone veto Ellen Degeneres?

Maria :D (Maria D.), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

I can't stand Hawking. smug, pedantic, not to mention a philanderer.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

veto hawking: dumped long-suffering wife for sexy nurse made obscure claim about nature of black holes which he later rescinded rather truculently

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

I veto Ellen too (sorry). Terrible comedienne.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

lorraine kelly's epic lunch story makes her impossible to veto

What is this story? How can anyone not like her?

started lunch at the normal hour, it ended at 4am, she shook herself down and headed to the gmtv studios to begin her working day. CLASSIC.

i should veto ellen degeneres under the no-comedians veto but i don't mind her really.

of course i've heard of billie jean king! i think she's a mental control freak egotist who's let herself get so out of shape that her nickname on these tennis boards i used to post on is burger king. BUT i am not going to veto her because all tennis players are like members of my family i slag off all the time but will ultimately defend outside tennis circles. note that this does not apply to actual members of my family

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

also billie jean king looks remarkably like elton john these days

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

David Hasselhoff
Mick Foley

Catherine Keener!

horseshoe (horseshoe), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

xxxpost

I veto Hasselhoff's hair
I hadn't heard of Mick Foley until now, thus vetoed
Sadly, Meatloaf vetoed, too, because I feel repulsion when I look at his picture.
I suspect that Ornaldo Bloomps is not a real person - vetoed

Maria :D (Maria D.), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

Catherine Keener is totally going to win.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

there's nothing that says they have to be real :)

Catherine Keener?

Christina Ricci didn't know the Beastie Boys had made a record before Paul's Boutique.

You're all forgetting one thing: Mary Louise Parker.

aesthetically pleasing, in other words 'fly' (kenan), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

She's actually David Duke in drag. Veto.

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

I don't have anything against Mary Louise Parker, but I don't get her supposed beauty.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

I'm down with Aung. Havel was vetoed (perhaps jokingly) for his Zappa love.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

don't know aung.

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

I don't like Mary Louise Parker because I hated Amy Gardner in the West Wing (see West Wing threads passim)

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

Stephen Colbert!

Maria :D (Maria D.), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

Amy Gardner is really more Aaron Sorkin's fault than Mary Louise Parker's, to be fair.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

She's actually David Duke in drag. Veto.

um... explain.

aesthetically pleasing, in other words 'fly' (kenan), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

there must be someone who doesn't like Colbert (not me though!)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, but looking at MLP's face makes me think Amy Gardner and go grrrr, so vetoed.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

As someone said upthread, it would probably be possible to find someone we all dislike. Like is hard impossible.

Presumably for being tangentially related to the world of comedy.

That's also dumm. Lily Tomlin is great. You know what's a killer movie? 9 to 5.

aesthetically pleasing, in other words 'fly' (kenan), Thursday, 16 November 2006 23:54 (eighteen years ago)

nobody vetoed Lily, unless you count Lex's blanket veto (which I don't think is fair in this case as Lily is not really a comedienne, more of an actress/monologist)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 16 November 2006 23:59 (eighteen years ago)

You want to reason with The Lex about it, fine. I'm still smarting that Brian Blessed is out due to having horrible feet!

(No-one's vetoed Ewan McGregor yet and I heart him due to him having a lovely voice and riding round the world on a motorbike for a laugh and being in Shallow Grave)

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 17 November 2006 00:04 (eighteen years ago)

I'm allright with Ewan (Lipstick on Your Collar!!!) but I'd be surprised if someone didn't veto him for his collusion with the execrable Star Wars franchise

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 17 November 2006 00:07 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yeah. I've never seen ANY Star Wars films, so that can't ruin him for me.
