that one's called baby. my friend lance did it. he is a good painter. it's really big. it's a big scary baby eating things. it loks different every time i look at it. i will post more art after i get rid of some photos on the camera. i started this thread cuzza people asking beth about her paintings on the other thread. my paintings don't hang in our house cuz rufus is kinda scared of them.

lance started a website, but he hasn't added anything to it yet :(

although it's currently living in my closet i love this lil' unit i found at the asia society when i was working on a photo shoot. i was there for a couple weeks and kept seeing it in a back room where i was loading film. on the last day i asked them if i could have it. they were all oh mongolia! haha yeah sure.

We bought a print of this and another one from a photographer who was losing his studio when 111 First St. in Jersey City was being shut down.

Much nicer in person, especially because he uses unsual printing technique and paper.

I'd have to dig around on Flickr, but there's a painting from my aunt and an original Snoopy by Schulz, both of which I'm deeply proud of...

scott, is yer friend perchance named Gully Jimson?

Aimless (Aimless), Sunday, 21 January 2007 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

It's taking all my willpower not to photoshop a "STALKER!" word balloon into jel's painting.

Do it, if you like. Though, I'm not sure of the significance of doing so.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 21 January 2007 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

no, his name is lance! you can click on his web-site, but there are only two little paintings on it. his stuff is amazing. i can't even begin to describe all the work he's done. just a massive output. he doesn't like to show or sell it though. he went to the academy in philly.

I do not now feel that I can post to this thread because I don't have any original art, just boring framed posters and stuff. Bah.

But Rufus sure looks like he's got an artistic streak. Has the snowman eaten a whirlwind?

can you see the big baby in lance's painting up top? it's kinda hard to see at first. it's got big hands and it's gobbling stuff up and it's eyes are all squinty. it's so 3-D in real life. layers and layers.

Chris Pew is great! I'm always so attracted to work that I seem totally incapable of doing myself, on account of being such a tightass. But it looks like he's going in kind of a tightass Escherish direction. Beautiful.

Drew, that is so loaded with lovely sultry cheese!

There's a picture of my sock on the interweb now.

Amazing visuals, all. I can't wait to see more. Beth's and her mom's paintings are amazing, especially IRL. The dog painting on Beth's wall is a Gretchen Baer. I have a gold pixie painting she did. I'll see if I can take a picture of it; it's packed away at the moment. Limited wall space here.

Maria :D (Maria D.), Monday, 22 January 2007 02:33 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't know that one was a portrait of you, Beth. I love the drawing you're holding.

Maria :D (Maria D.), Monday, 22 January 2007 02:33 (nineteen years ago)

Beth, you have an astounding amount of art hanging on your walls. Very good. And they all have this wonderful character to them. They must add color and gaiety to your everyday life.

Ever since the move I haven't had a chance to rehang the art that used to exist on the walls of my (now-old) home, but as soon as I can I'd love to get to it. I used to have two of my paintings hanging on my bedroom's walls and two more of my paintings hanging elsewhere around the house. And then there's the portrait of the Golden Gate Bridge that my parents got in the late '80s upon our arrival there, a painting by my old art teacher, something my mom did when she went to a couple of painting workshops, and a print of something else.

this is hanging in our living room, i guess it's the focus right now:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v252/rankingmonkey/ilx/k.jpg

it's a k. chin lithograph from his gallery in california. i found it for $5 at a bookstore. he was the louis wain of owls!

the rest of our stuff is arty prints i couldn't tell you the origin of, halloween postcards from the late 19th and early 20th century, and victoriana, i guess. also plenty of halloween bric-a-brac all over the place. my wife is a halloween freak. she also paints but won't hang any of her own stuff up.

My parents had a bunch of paintings by an awesome Taiwanese painter named Chin Sung, but I can find almost nothing about him on the net (my search may be complicated by how common "chin" and "sung" are) except for a book of his paintings and poems at a rare book dealer.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

My mother always said that we should be thankful for bad artists, because they keep the art-supply dealers in business.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

The two cartoonish paintings are by someone who sadly doesn't paint much anymore. The posters he makes for his band are pretty great, though.

The raccoons are by a friend who does comics (hunt out the watercolored ones in particular, he's been getting into a sort of lo-res aesthetic lately which makes everything look much "worse" than it actually is), and whose cartoons of raccoons made me very happy at one point, so I kept pestering him to do more raccoon cartoons. Hence the paintings.

The broken kids' castle is by my friend Gabriel, who mostly does paintings of the assorted children in his life, many of which (including mine) are painted on old illustrated classics type books that are gessoed (or something) solid, so they look like tiles.

I've never been able to put this up--it's too creepy and sad. I found it in a thrift shop the day after my best friend Fred died (that's a smidgen of a photo of him next to the Tomata/Jeannie C. Riley painting) It just looks SO much like him in clown makeup--it spooks me. Plus it kinda dominates the room in my small apartment.

My Koogy Weighs A Ton (koogs), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 09:32 (nineteen years ago)

Beth, there's a whole subculture of academics (mostly) who are quite dogmatic about how stupid Powerpoint makes you. Having said that, I'm an academic and I've never seen anyone give a presentation with anything other than Powerpoint or Keynote apart from the odd mathematician or theoretical physicist (I'm a theoretical astrophysicist, so we occasionally cross paths), who use transparencies or even -- gasp! -- the blackboard. Different strokes, etc.

Tufte's books are great though. They're so dense and rich with information, and genuinely beautiful objects. This thread is my favourite on his forum.

p.s. you have so much awesome art! I feel like Zoidberg going to the art opening and saying, "One art please!"

My grandfather collected all sorts of bicycle antiques and memorabilia. He had a large collection of French bike posters and this is one of them.

Somewhere I have a painting that was an 18th birthday present: a friend commissioned his sister to paint it for me. I really should dig it out and put it on the wall. It's of an eye.

Archel, I love your sister's paintings.

I've loved Edward Tufte since I saw that the front cover of one of his books is a train path diagram. Which I have posted before - because googling the phrase brings up very few results, and one of them is this.

Nice! Inspired by the cover art of The Strokes' first album? (the international edition of Is This It)

Matt, I LOVE the pebble mosaic! How big is it?

It could be. I'm actually looking at that album cover for the first time right now and it looks very similar. I think she gave us those photos around the same time that it was released. I'll have to ask her.

The pebble mosaic is about 2'x3' or maybe a little more, and it weighs a freakin' ton.

Happiness cannot be taken lightly.

Holy shit, Olkan, that's not just Disney, it's Mary Blair! The wall hanging is prime.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 26 January 2007 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

Conversation this morning with co-worker:

CW: whatcha gonna do when you get home Saturday?
me: eat pho and we gotta hang some art on the walls. Only one piece up since we moved in.
CW: I collect art. What kinda stuff you got?
me: buncha stuff from people we know, some Japanese woodblock prints
CW: I went kinda crazy for Thomas Kinkades....
me: ....(brain shut down)

My wife is a big fan of Mary Blair's work (I like it too). That tapestry was available for a while at bargain basement prices on the Disney store site. It was so inexpensive that we almost bought a second one after my son tore up the tassles (grrrrr!).

Our Steve Keene painting!

If I had more wall space, I'd buy a hundred Steve Keene paintings.

The McKinley one reminds me of a piece that a former roommate had up in the kitchen of our apartment (sadly, no photo). It was a needlepoint or cross-stich rendering of St. Francis of Assisi in the forest with the little animals, except that a friend had taken a black magic marker and altered St. Francis so that he had an Abraham Lincoln hat and beard. It looked like Honest Abe in biblical robes in the forest surrounded by cute little animals. Always made me smile!

Matt Olken (Moodles), Friday, 26 January 2007 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

Haha Matt that Vonnegut thing! I wondered about the choice of painting Prince Charles in a bearskin hat looking over his left shoulder while prancing along with Ubu-like curled arms -- and then I saw what it was probably supposed to be! Or is the ambiguity deliberate?

(Girl's right arm = nose; breast = stiff upper lip; bum = arms; legs = legs)

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Friday, 26 January 2007 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

The double image thing never occurred to me, but I can kind of see it. That one was really hard for me to photograph because it is pretty small, so the effects of the flash were much worse than on some of the larger ones. I think without the glare of the flash (and all the fingerprint smudges) it would look more obviously like a naked woman.

Matt Olken (Moodles), Friday, 26 January 2007 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

Probably yeah, easier to see top half as undisturbed part as picture and interpreting it as head or something.

Anyway, hope I haven't ruined it for you ;)

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Friday, 26 January 2007 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

Also, Matt, well done on the reflection on that French bike photo: it's right where the bike's lamp could be!

StanM (StanM), Friday, 26 January 2007 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

I only see the naked lady.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 26 January 2007 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

Try again Thermo. Read my instructions. At first, ignore lower half of picture and all I say of it.

After, when you can switch at will, you are allowed to see only naked lady.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Friday, 26 January 2007 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

(probably my first seeing of it was due to it looking like cartoon/comicstripthing, and pixelslim necks are regular in those, pixelslim waists less so)

I really like esoJim's paintings as well! The "cat" comment made me look upthread and roffle a bit, and also see the middle one in the next one as FISH. The right one is Little My as drawn by an acolyte of Neil Gaiman, but then I am drunk.

Any chance of a pic of the one with the lamp without the lamp, Jim?

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Friday, 26 January 2007 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

It's absolutely Charles!
