And what's not so good?

Graham (graham), Monday, 26 August 2002 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

a good film at the moment=all the president's men. in fact, that's a good film at any moment.

haha, you obviously meant NEW films. I don't know, sorry.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 26 August 2002 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

my friend rae says the new almodovar = grebt

(ok she said in it in normal english, but that's what she *meant*)

(more helpful i know if i cd remembah the title but i can't)

mark s (mark s), Monday, 26 August 2002 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I quite liked the Guru, it passed the time and it wasn't boring.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 26 August 2002 15:28 (twenty-three years ago)

A glowing endorsement if ever i heard one.

Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 26 August 2002 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I try my best.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 26 August 2002 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

you might still be able to catch sex and lucia

also i saw donnie darko the other day and lobed it. dunno when it's coming out tho

bob zemko (bob), Monday, 26 August 2002 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

i liked signs. if you can suspend your 'where's the twist' reflex for its 90 minutes it's quite enjoyable, and QUIET, which is always refreshing.

i saw it in a double feature with triple x. that movie was not quiet.

margarita happy hour got a lot of aging-hipster details just right.

maura (maura), Monday, 26 August 2002 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

i enjoyed tadpole. it is slower and sadder and more unresolved then the ads show, a bit like truffout(sp)

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 26 August 2002 17:13 (twenty-three years ago)

also i saw donnie darko the other day and lobed it. dunno when it's coming out tho

*befuddled* But it came out last year.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 August 2002 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)

surely you mean last EAR.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 26 August 2002 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

D'OH!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 August 2002 18:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Lovely and Amazing is good.

dan (dan), Monday, 26 August 2002 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

signs was not good, that guy is turning into a one hit wonder because unbreakable was rotten as well.
it is like all the tension was squeezed into 5 minutes of the film, the rest was just meandering along without much of a pulse.

keith, Monday, 26 August 2002 23:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard Shallow Hal was 'actually not as bad as you'd think.' What does anyone else have to say about that?

maryann, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 05:55 (twenty-three years ago)

It depends on how bad you expected it to be.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 06:01 (twenty-three years ago)

hey manny, I want to know who said that.

rainy, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 06:08 (twenty-three years ago)

It was Emily, she's like a genius. So you know. I don't think she expected it to be all THAT bad, just kind of trashy. So if it's better than only having trash appeal - it fits her description. Rainy you rule the universe unconditionally!

maryann, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 06:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Shallow Hal ain't that bad. But then it takes a hell of alot for me to describe a film as bad.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 07:02 (twenty-three years ago)

jel, did you ever see Joe Dirt?

rainy, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 07:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think I've ever seen that one! What's it about?

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 07:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Good God! Joe Dirt was unbearably horrible. I was on an eight hour bus ride & stuck right in front of the tv. I tried to look away but was helpless to resist. It's about the life and times of a prototypical redneck as played by the demon spawn known as David Spade. Sample gag: a dog's testicles are frozen to the porch...hilarity ensues! How did this movie ever get made? It probably made like a million million dollars at the box office, too.

Miss Laura, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 07:22 (twenty-three years ago)

do NOT go and see 8 legged freaks, it is RUB.

katie (katie), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 07:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm gonna go and see Austin Powers 3 today. Is Joe Dirt worse than Basketball?

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 07:28 (twenty-three years ago)

donnie darko hasn't come out in england yet, ned. I don't know if it will

bob zemko (bob), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 07:35 (twenty-three years ago)

(i'm keeping "lobed" btw)

bob zemko (bob), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 07:36 (twenty-three years ago)

'Vivre Sa Vie', just revived in a new print. You won't find a better film on in the UK.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 07:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw the Guru the other night, it passed the time and it wasn't boring and there were some good dance sequences.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 07:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Reign Of Fire. Its got dragons in it - though a somewhat incoherent plot (and is actually about World War II).

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 08:44 (twenty-three years ago)

What's incoherent? Dragons take over the world. Humans fight dragons. Stuff happens. Power struggle etc. etc. blah blah blah the end. It is a great film and I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes muscular tattoed men speaking in throaty voices.

Emma, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 08:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Stuff happens

I fear this is where yr argument starts to flounder

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 09:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't want to give it away for anyone who has not yet seen it. Anyway I managed to follow it without any effort whatsoever and I find most things incoherent.

Emma, Tuesday, 27 August 2002 09:07 (twenty-three years ago)

we saw bully the other night. although i am a BIIIIG larry clark fan i found it a wee bit mediocre. well just the part after the murder. there were four other people... two left after ten minutes. hahah

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 09:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew may be right about the wonderful Vivre Sa Vie (if only for the cafe scene where they start dancing), but we are halfway through a titanic Kon Ichikawa season at the NFT, with An Actor's Revenge, one of my all-time favourites, still to come, and the samurai one he co-wrote with Kurosawa and only made in 2000, after Kurosawa died.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 27 August 2002 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
Is there nowhere in London showing the Mandy Moore film A Walk To Remember, or what else should I see whilst I'm here?

Graham (graham), Friday, 13 September 2002 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

i guess these films will make it for me this year: demonlover by olivier assayas, loin by andre techine, tarantino´s new flick, but most of all: the fast runner.

so, your best bet is probably warner village west end.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 11:07 (twenty-three years ago)

best place to check london film times = http://www.thisislondon.co.uk

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 11:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, but I'm not going to be in London again this week. Nowhere in walking distance had it, wish is so so rubbish. Northampton and oxford did.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 11:29 (twenty-three years ago)

opps sorry, didn't notice you posted that on the 13th. oh well!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 11:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm told Y Tu Mama Tambien is really good, but, er, I haven't actually seen it. Lots of good reports, though, if that means anything.

OCP (OCP), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 02:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I've just seen A Walk To Remember, and I was so moved by it. I didn't cry, but gosh touched my stony little heart. I love you Mandy. Why did you have to ***SPOILER***?

I saw the Guru. Jel is such the expert movie reviewer.

P.S. Rollins is the greatest middle name ever.

Graham (graham), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw "my big fat greek wedding" yesterday. It was quite good, no surprises, you could take your mum to watch it.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

the best film i've seen recently is sur mes levres. i wanted to see merci pour le chocolat but i think its run in theaters around here has ended. this is what usually happens.

youn, Monday, 23 September 2002 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

signs: micro invasion flick kinda like invasion of the body snatchers crossed with an episode of errie indiana.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 23 September 2002 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I really enjoyed THE GURU mainly because of Marisa Tomei - what a BABE!

Lek Dukagjin, Monday, 23 September 2002 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

true!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 23 September 2002 21:02 (twenty-three years ago)

One Hour Photo was pretty decent. Robin Williams is a scary little fucker in it.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 12:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I just got let out of Shakti - The Power. One of the most amazing and disturbing, and well, long films I've ever seen. I had idea it was 3 1/2 hours long until they had an interval cor blimey. I was going to see something else after but I guess it's saved me a whole 3 quid.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 18:18 (twenty-three years ago)

This week I have been taking advantage of living within [nearly] walking distance of a 20 screen £3-a-go cinema. Today I saw a digital performance of Signs. The film was OK but the projection system (which I've got to do a presentation on this week gulp) was awful, the colour alignment was off, when things are still you see terrifying amounts of detail, when things are moving they go horrible and you have to wait for them to stop before you can work out what's going on. And I've got to explain why it's the future - is having nice square edges and corners enough?

Graham (graham), Saturday, 28 September 2002 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

hey, I hear the eye is quite good. I love going to the cinema, sometimes a film doesn't have to be anything more than watchable.

Asoka was good and it had an interval.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 28 September 2002 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

The last three films I have seen (Lovely & Amazing, Talk To Her and Lantana) have all been v.fine.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 29 September 2002 11:40 (twenty-three years ago)

As muttered on its own thread, Spirited Away = spiff.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 September 2002 13:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Spirited Away is way way WAY better than Prncss. Mononoke. WAY better. Really. Much.

Dan I., Sunday, 29 September 2002 18:05 (twenty-three years ago)

eloge pour l'amour

boxcubed (boxcubed), Sunday, 29 September 2002 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Eloge De L'Amour is long gone, surely? It was last year - it's already been on TV in England, in fact.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 29 September 2002 20:45 (twenty-three years ago)

its playing for 4 days here. so its at the moment for me at least. you guys are lucky

boxcubed (boxcubed), Sunday, 29 September 2002 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

It's worth seeing, I think. Not exactly like his prime, obviously, and very talky, but a lot of the last third is beautiful.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 29 September 2002 21:16 (twenty-three years ago)

oh i did see it, i enjoyed it v. much.

boxcubed (boxcubed), Sunday, 29 September 2002 21:18 (twenty-three years ago)

martin - do you recall how this line ends: "my grandfather never called it globalization, he called it..." ?

boxcubed (boxcubed), Sunday, 29 September 2002 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

No. Was it from that film? I probably wasn't paying attention. I gave Andrew L a video of it last week, so he might have watched it by now.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 30 September 2002 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't watched it yet, but will have a notebk to hand when I do!

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 30 September 2002 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

wow, thanks much! there is a lot to try to digest/remember in one sitting

boxcubed (boxcubed), Monday, 30 September 2002 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

It has a good line about someone petitioning for a Breton version of The Matrix.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 30 September 2002 18:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyone around these parts seen 'Igby Goes Down' yet? I saw it on Saturday night and loved it. I have heard mixed reviews from others.

Mandee, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 02:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I just saw Talk To Her. Are we meant to be sympathetic towards the nurse guy? (and were we? As ILE's live-in stalker creepynutfreak I kind of was)

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 23:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Benigno I mean.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 3 October 2002 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

It's good to be sympathetic to everyone. Did you see my thread?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 3 October 2002 14:02 (twenty-three years ago)

(I forgot about that. Thanks)

Graham (graham), Thursday, 3 October 2002 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Not so good: The Tuxedo. Probably the worst Jackie Chan movie since... Supercop? It's been a while since he had a movie that disappointed me, although I still thought this was ok. Negatives: far too much plot, an annoying Jennifer Love Hewitt, and stunts with wires!

Vinnie (vprabhu), Thursday, 3 October 2002 23:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Supercop is good! Gorgeous has been the most rub one I can think of in recent years. I make it a habit of not seeing anything with JLH, so I have no idea if it's any better (or worse) than that.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 3 October 2002 23:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Supercop had Michelle Yeoh, right? A good combination of stars right there!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 October 2002 00:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, it did! I honestly don't know how anyone could dislike Supercop.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 4 October 2002 00:20 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
Anita and Me = utterly fantastic. Thankyou Mr Sinkah!

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 20:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked Harry Potter.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

die another day = a bit pants, same old story, wooden innuendo, and what steamy sex scenes? Rusamond Peek was quite nice.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I will go see Harry Potter. Lord of the R*ngs is out on the 18th December!

But, the day I went to see Harry Potter last year was the day I got offered my old job back. And I'm not sure it was a great idea to take it and certainly not to stay so long, oh well!

Has anyone seen orange county? It got really good reviews but doesn't seem to be on anywhere.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I never replied to Nicole! I remember Supercop being really drawn-out but to be honest I may be confusing it with another Jackie Chan movie. If it has Michelle Yeoh, I doubt it's as bad as I remember.

Hahaha, I completely forgot about Gorgeous though - by far, the worst Jackie Chan movie there is, if it can be called one (he was in it for like half the movie!)

Vinnie (vprabhu), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko Donnie Darko!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

The 'new' Woody Allen is finally out in the UK next week. I suspect he won't get much love here, but I've adored him since I was a teenager, and have seen all of them. Is this worth the effort?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 21:58 (twenty-three years ago)

i found out that godard line: "my father never called it globalization, he always called it the universal stage"

i recently saw bowling for columbine, it was about what you'd expect.

boxcubed (boxcubed), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 01:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Far From Heaven was top-notch as a period piece, but I think Haynes hobbled himself by steering it too far away from camp.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 03:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I just saw Harry Potter. It was cute and I claim both Weasley twins.

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 03:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Martin: you mean Hollywood Ending? I reviewed it for my college paper when it came out. it's pretty lame and ridiculous but I suppose it's worth seeing, as there are a few good one-liners.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

No, it's Curse Of The Jade Scorpion. I think it was out ages and ages ago in the US.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 20:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Second Far From Heaven! Very very good. Esp all the necessary ruptures with the 50's style ie Quaid's expletives, the overt homosexuality, the gardener's (forgot names, sorry) gentle cruelty in bringing Cathy to the black cafe, etc.

g.cannon (gcannon), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 20:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Bowling For Columbine...it's one of the most touching-yet-disturbing, hilarious-yet-depressing, retarded-yet-powerful, focused-yet-disjointed, crazy perfect movies ever. I've never been so conflicted about a film, yet one thing I know for sure...IT WAS WORTH CHECKING OUT.

Oh, and going back a little...Richard Linklater's Waking Life is quite something to behold.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Just saw Roger Dodger -- handheld camerawork must be outlawed.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 28 November 2002 03:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Spirited Away is the best film of 2002.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 28 November 2002 03:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Bowling for Columbine is great. Donnie Darko is insane, although great. What's the 'new' Woddy Allen film that's coming out? Curse of the Jade Scorpian never seemed to make it over here (UK). Anyway, have found this great place that covers music and has wicked interviews and stuff: http://www.bbc.co.uk/collective

bob bobble (bobble), Thursday, 28 November 2002 12:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Die Another Day has a great credits sequence, then it's all a bit downhill. Great swordfight, Q sequence and a funny last few minutes perk it up a bit. If they ever make a James Bond film that's good all the way through, it'll be the best film ever.

If you think Supercop is a little poor, you're definitely thinking of something else.

Curse of the Jade Scorpion was released last August in the states, and only next week here. I have no idea why: it's not like he doesn't make a film a year, regular as clockwork (and about as interesting).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 28 November 2002 12:45 (twenty-three years ago)

far from heaven is terrible! the only thing preventing it from being by far the worst film i've seen this year is before you go, which is probably the worst film i've ever seen.

only good bit about far from heaven = disapproving looks when i couldn't help myself and burst out laughing at some key emotional scene.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 28 November 2002 21:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Bowling For Columbine is great.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 28 November 2002 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw Curse of the Jade Scorpion last year at a special NFT showing to accompany a Woody Allen live interview. It was enjoyable enough - just another of his late, quite funny ones. At the time he had just finished filming 'Hollywood Endings', and sounded very enthusisatic about it. I was looking forward to it, but I think I heard that it was in fact a bit rub, despite having Téa Leoni in it.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 30 November 2002 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

What is that word 'despite' for, Nick?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 30 November 2002 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I love her and I will always love her.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 30 November 2002 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Die Another Day was better than the last one (which I realize says nothing). I thought even the credits sequence was a letdown despite having the best Bond song in years.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Saturday, 30 November 2002 17:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I keep imagining that it's East 17 singing the title to the tune of their Christmas hit 'Stay Another Day'. Is that not right?

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 30 November 2002 17:21 (twenty-three years ago)

n, I've never seen 'jade scorpion' but have been told repeatedly that it was awful, and that 'hollywood ending' (which I have seen and which was slight but comforting) is better.

moral of die another day = do not sent your kids to harvard

Josh (Josh), Saturday, 30 November 2002 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Well IMDB reviewers give Jade Scorpion a higher rating than Hollywood Ending and you can't argue with that (errmm..)

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 30 November 2002 18:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Pinefox 4 J.Lo!!

Enough = v.v.silly, though silly in a boring way at the start but silly in a fabulous way at the end. Jenny's character is pretending to read Finnegan's Wake, so I think the Pinefox should pounce (as they are both fictional characters).

Graham (graham), Thursday, 5 December 2002 12:28 (twenty-three years ago)

three weeks pass...
I watched Sweet Home Alabama and it is really good.

Jenny, Sunday, 29 December 2002 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Made in Mannhatttan and Sweet Home Alabama are the best movies I have ever saw.

Emma, Sunday, 29 December 2002 20:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I Fell in love I mean I fell in love with Made in ***Mannhaten***

Teresa, Sunday, 29 December 2002 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

apparently they play Caligula at the theatre in Tscheboksary Russia at the moment.

erik, Sunday, 29 December 2002 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Toby might have missed some of the point with Far From Heaven. It's homage to melodrama is executed so well that by today's standards it does produce laughable moments. It's a beautiful, beautiful film. The furntiture, the clothes. . .just flawless.

That Girl (thatgirl), Sunday, 29 December 2002 23:48 (twenty-three years ago)

"In the Bedroom" is very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very good.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 30 December 2002 00:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Adaptation, 25th Hour, Gangs of New York... that one with Jack Nicholson.

David Allen, Monday, 30 December 2002 03:38 (twenty-three years ago)

ToToR is good.

Deathwatch is pretty good, and provides a handy opportunity for seeing what Gollum really looks like.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 30 December 2002 10:31 (twenty-three years ago)

That Thing With That Chick From Amelie: Any thoughts? I kind of liked it and thought it was annoying too. There's a fantastic crime-busting mini series to be made out of it though, possibly animated.

Graham (graham), Monday, 30 December 2002 10:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Second the post saying 'Far From Heaven' is terrible. I suppose it's "well-executed" (in capturing the period and the Sirk look--and yes, some of the photography's quite beautiful in spots), but attention to detail seems to be its only saving grace, and I found myself completely bored through most of it. And as my wife pointed out, it doesn't cut any deeper--has no more emotional resonance--than dozens of made-for-TV movies that have done more or less the exact same thing: taken an earlier era filled with social taboos and inserted those same taboos front and center in the story.

bobby j, Thursday, 9 January 2003 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

three months pass...
Has anyone seen Intacto yet? Pete? And has Bulletproof Monk been out already in the US? Any good?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 13 April 2003 11:38 (twenty-three years ago)

in Far From Heaven it looked like every autumn leaf was casted individually. so beautiful. so empty.

Erik, Sunday, 13 April 2003 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

So rubbish.

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 13 April 2003 11:49 (twenty-three years ago)

you too, brutus?

Erik, Sunday, 13 April 2003 11:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Am I the only person who didn't understand donnie darko?

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 13 April 2003 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

donnie darko is the best film I haven't seen yet.

Erik, Sunday, 13 April 2003 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

''Am I the only person who didn't understand donnie darko?''

there have been a couple of threads dog latin. do the search and you'll find some discussion that will illuminate and entertain you.

I saw it and it was deliberately confusing but i enjoyed that (and i thought most of it was pretty clear anyway).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 13 April 2003 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

"Secretary," people -- why in the hell aren't you talking about "Secretary"??? Talk about "Secretary" now. Forget all those other stupid movies.

jewelly (jewelly), Sunday, 13 April 2003 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

X-MEN 2 IS COMING OUT IN 2 WEEKS PEOPLE! NO ONE ALERTED ME! I AM DISAPPOINTED IN ALL! I COULD'VE MISSED HUGH JACKMAN!

That is all.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 13 April 2003 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I read a bit the other day somewhere that referred to "Alan 'X-Men' Cumming". Who the hell is he playing? I know the characters pretty well, and I can't imagine.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 13 April 2003 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Martin, he's playing Nightcrawler. Saw a clip on Jonathan Ross' show last week, and wasn't terribly impressed.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 13 April 2003 17:04 (twenty-three years ago)

today I saw "How to lose a man in 10 days", Kate Hudson = rowr!

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 13 April 2003 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Nightcrawler was rather more mitteleuropean than Scottish, as I recall. And he never struck me as very camp, whih Alan Cumming always does. And he has the wrong number of toes and fingers! And he's not blue, etc.!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 13 April 2003 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

A tad ashamed to say I saw Johnny English today and found it, well, rather funny. Just wish Hugh Laurie had been Bough to reprise a bit of the old Black A. But no. Stupid, stupid, stupid, but there could just be 1.5 hours of Rowan A. and I'd laugh. Or rather, laff, since it was a laff riot.

Skottie, Sunday, 13 April 2003 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

"Secretary." See it now. It's awesome. It's like this totally perverse love story comedy. James Spader is weirdly sexy (never thought I'd say it) and Maggie Gyll--whatever-her-name-is is hawt enough to make me feel all lezzie inside.

jewelly (jewelly), Sunday, 13 April 2003 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I watched it last night. I identified with Lee a lot.

Leee (Leee), Sunday, 13 April 2003 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't identify with the S & M angle necessarily ... but for me it was the idea of finding someone whose kinks match your kinks. The way the movie shows how these two people fit each other in the most intimately personal and healing ways ... I related to that...

jewelly (jewelly), Sunday, 13 April 2003 18:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked "All the Real Girls." Although some parts are so sweetly romantic, they are brutal if you're single.

bnw (bnw), Sunday, 13 April 2003 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Intacto was pretty good if you like all that luck nonsense.

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 13 April 2003 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, actually, I thought Intacto was really good but I've been underwhelmed by any film that isn't Ginger Snaps recently, which you should all run, not walk, and see.

I am in love with Emily Perkins.

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 13 April 2003 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

but I saw Ginger Snaps 2 years ago. I think there is a thread on it! Interesting piece of useless trivia: there is a camera/developers in Acton called Ginger Snaps.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 13 April 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Did you like it jel? It was on the Sci-fi channel over the weekend and I thought it was brilliant.

There's a Ginger Snaps 2 just out in Amerikey, too.

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 13 April 2003 19:24 (twenty-three years ago)

X-MEN 2 IS COMING OUT IN 2 WEEKS PEOPLE! NO ONE ALERTED ME!

How is it that I, who barely see films in the theater, was well aware of this and you were not?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 13 April 2003 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't see the second Harry Potter at the cinema, so I'm getting the vid tomorrow. People say it's good, anyway.

X-Men was cool, so I'm looking forward to the sequel.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Sunday, 13 April 2003 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked "All the Real Girls." Although some parts are so sweetly romantic, they are brutal if you're single.
-- bnw (rilke...), April 13th, 2003.

I saw this a month or so ago at the Berlin Film Festival and it was, uh, really great. I agree totally with bnw, it's a bit sweet sometimes, but sweet like too much sugar, not saccarine. The bits with his mother were excellent. Dancing around in the clown suit, soooo embarrassing, very honest. It didn't always work perfectly, but it just seemed real.

SKottie, Sunday, 13 April 2003 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Somebody say something about The Phone Booth

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 13 April 2003 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Brian Singer has no biz directing an action flick.

Leee (Leee), Sunday, 13 April 2003 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Millar: the Phone Booth

I will put up with no limit of rubbishness if a film has any sort of sniper subtext. Examples? Err. Leon: come on, it's rubbish, it is rubbish - I loved it, that scene where they pop the important jogger in the park! And, well, I can't remember but I fully expect to thole that guy from Coronation St (Colin Farrell) to watch some more of that sniper shit.

(Hey Millar, how d'you become a sniper? Like one of those guys with a PSG-1? Just play lots of online Delta Force or somethin'? I have my own ghillie suit. And sand bag.)

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 13 April 2003 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Ghillie suit made out of overalls and shredded burlap, mind.

Just place the bag of sand under the muzzle as you set up, then give a little squeeze just before you shoot, it just places the sweet spot, nice.

Though make sure you don't fill the bag with sand from the quarry where you practice snipe because David Caruso will track you down using that when you Start the Fury in downtown Miami. Or, say, if you unleash on the strip in Vegas - Grissom will hunt you down.

Err.

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 13 April 2003 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I read a bit the other day somewhere that referred to "Alan 'X-Men' Cumming".

OH MY GOD...I had no idea he was in it! Also, I will forever refer to him as "Alan 'X-Men' Cumming" from hereforth.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 13 April 2003 22:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Hypercube has made it's way to the US.
i missed it when it appeared on TV, but I'm sure I'll rent it. (I want to see it without commericals anyway)

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 14 April 2003 00:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Spider wasn't as good as I hoped it'd be. Probably my least favorite Cronenberg.
Hey I just saw Femme Fatale and it's pretty good! Might not be the best thing ever, but it was totally underrated by most critics, if I'm remembering correctly.
The preview for Intacto makes it look like horrible shit. Like series 7 was. UUUUgh. Movies full of drama people that don't know how to behave on film, C/D?

Dan I., Monday, 14 April 2003 00:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I loved Femme Fatale.

slutsky (slutsky), Monday, 14 April 2003 00:52 (twenty-three years ago)

But Series 7 had the awesome home made goth video for "love will tear us apart" and they tore a banner that said love. How could a movie with that be anything but classic?

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 14 April 2003 00:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I just watched 'Secretary' and it was quite good I thought. I want an office like Mr. Grey's. I suspect I would like to have a secretary like that too but let's not delve.

Millar (Millar), Monday, 14 April 2003 00:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought it was pretty good too. It has rekindled the Spader crush, I thought I had finally shaken it.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 14 April 2003 01:06 (twenty-three years ago)

You and Stripey need to compare notes on Mr. Spader if you haven't already.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 April 2003 01:15 (twenty-three years ago)

AND Series 7 had a GVSB soundtrack that utterly ruled. Classick.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 14 April 2003 01:35 (twenty-three years ago)

How did Spider compare to eXistenZ?

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 14 April 2003 02:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I still gotta see Spider myself. I'm an eXistenZ lovah personally--don't know about you folks.

slutsky (slutsky), Monday, 14 April 2003 02:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I just saw "Baise Moi" and I'm not sure if it was the best or worst film I've ever seen.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 01:05 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
I'm planning to go to see Secretary at the UGC in the Trocadero on Thursday evening - probably the 6.30 showing, but I'll update when I know. I'm going with one old pal, but I thought I'd mention it and see if anyone else fancies it. I might start doing this kind of thing regularly.

two months pass...
I'm planning to rent a film tonight, and have one in mind, which I was recommended once, but I can't remember the title. It's about, I think, a man who's childhood friend gets back in touch and follows him around, or something like that. Does it have a bloke's name in the title, like Jack, Jake -- I don't recall. Anyone know?

Druid, Saturday, 13 September 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Chuck and Buck -- That's it.

Druid, Saturday, 13 September 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I really want to see Lost in Translation.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 13 September 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Spirited Away is out, I will see that.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 13 September 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

As well you should, good Jel.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 September 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to say "With a Friend Like Harry"...

Pete Scholtes, Saturday, 13 September 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Spirited Away is on at Notting Hill Gate cinema - maybe a West London FAP to incorporate this jel?

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 13 September 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

It's on at the Renoir too, I think. I want to see it too. A FAF might be appropriate.

I am going to see Lost In Translation tomorrow.

Carey (Carey), Saturday, 13 September 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Americans - talk about Spellbound.

David. (Cozen), Saturday, 13 September 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"I really want to see Lost in Translation."

Saw it last night. Plan on seeing it again before it leaves theatres. There was a sneak preview in L.A. with Ms. Coppola in attendance a while back, but they were pretty sneaky about it so I missed out :(

It was more or less everything I was expecting. I was hoping for more "new" Kevin Shields material (I think there was one song over the credits, and then some incidental instrumental stuff), but the use of songs from Loveless actually worked well with the tenderness, alienation, absurdity, and melancholy of the film.

Check out http://www.laweekly.com for a review of the movie, along with interviews with the stars and the director. It had a similar pace and attention to the detail of the setting/atmosphere, but beyond this, it succeeds for different reasons than The Virgin Suicides.

I think it will have a wide appeal despite its subtlety, as there is quite a bit of humor throughout; though the ambiguity of the ending may infuriate those wanting a Hollywood romantic resolution.

Along with Dirty Pretty Things, Northfork, and 28 Days, this is one of the few movies I really have enjoyed so far this year.

Ryan McKay (Ryan McKay), Sunday, 14 September 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm hoping to see a movie tomorrow, but we'll see; the girlfriend has a lot of homework. We're hoping to see Once Upon a Time in Mexico or Cabin Fever.

Until then, I've been watching Head over and over and over and over again.
