oh you know: the BEZ (= apparently supernumerary character whose presence is in fact essential) and the XANDER (= apprarently secondary character whose story the film actually secretly is, despite title/star casting etc etc)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

(the xander in the silmarillion director's cut is TELEPORNO aka Celeborn) (rickyT proved that, by science) (howevah it is not a movie)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 18:37 (twenty-three years ago)

chewbacca is the bez of stars wars et al: discuss

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, come on, Mark! In the Star Wars universe, Bez = Luke, Xander = Han Solo/Princess Leia (delete as applicable).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 21:18 (twenty-three years ago)

i felt a major controversy wd bring the thread to life!! the xander is darth vader obv

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Xander = everyone besides Luke, including Boba Fett.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Xander = R2D2! That little droid is the character upon which the entire star wars universe is built. Without him, there is no star wars.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 21:46 (twenty-three years ago)

i agree with jel. if you watch the first one again (i mean ep. IV, sigh) it's all from R2's point of view, well, at least the first 30 minutes or so; it frames what follows.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

plus he easily coasts to victory as more human than anyone else in the picture; the jedis maybe have more of a "conscience" but they're so pious you want to scream operatic heavy-metal at them

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 00:15 (twenty-three years ago)

is samwise the bez or the xander then? i don't think bez would carry shaun ryder thru the depths of mordor. not without dropping him quite a bit anyway. even if he's neither bez nor x., can we just talk about samwise anyway? he's the mostest. (not so much in the films....yet.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 00:21 (twenty-three years ago)

SHEEESH you GUYS!! the xander of LotR is Aragorn, obv. "return of the xander" anyone? and the bez is tom bombadil a-hahahahaha KILL HIM.

katie (katie), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 07:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Balls! In what way is Aragorn a supernumerary character? He ends up King of 90% of the West, ffs!

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 07:37 (twenty-three years ago)

bez = apparently supernumerary but not; xander = apparently somewhat secondary but not

not everyone is reading the question

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 07:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I still don't see how Aragorn can possibly be seen as a secondary character after we find out he's the heir to the throne of Gondor. That's like a big flashing sign appearing over Xanders head at the end of season one reading 'IT'S ALL ABOUT ME!'. Or the last two seasons of Buffy being subtitled 'Xander kicks arse'.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 07:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I am the Xander of ILE! Or is that too egotistical?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 07:44 (twenty-three years ago)

the xander in lotr = gollum!! that's easy
aragorn is an apparently primary character who is in fact secondary (also: very very boring)

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 07:48 (twenty-three years ago)

SHEESH rickyT like DUH!!! no=one fecking KNOWS he's going to end up king of the sodding west, do they!!!!!!!!!!!

katie (katie), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 08:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there's this spooky dude in a cloak and suuuuuure, he knows his way round the forest and has a handy way with elves, but everyone thinks he's walked out of a frickin SONG or something! and then he ends up BEING THE SONG!!! geez. i have to explain EVERYTHING.

katie (katie), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 08:01 (twenty-three years ago)

you *know* i'm right.

katie (katie), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 08:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Xander does not end up being the song.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 08:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Aragorn is on first appearances a bloody big part of the song after only 1/6 of LOTR.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 08:08 (twenty-three years ago)

D'yer get meh?

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 08:08 (twenty-three years ago)

The word 'secretly' is vvvv important here.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 08:13 (twenty-three years ago)

um AHEM rickyT i believe the the original criteria were APPARENTLY secondary character whose story it SECRETLY is and as far as the Fellowship are concerned, all they want to do is get that ring in that crack oo-er. THEY also don't know at first what the heir of isildur blah blah entails (hence it is a secret) but then the fellowship breaks and the story becomes all about aragorn, do YOU see????

katie (katie), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 08:20 (twenty-three years ago)

they have to keep it a SECRET from Sauron till aragorn discloses it to him in the palantir.

katie (katie), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 08:20 (twenty-three years ago)

also unless you have read more spoilers than me, you do not know that xander does not end up being the song. i think that as far as mark s is concerned buffy is all about xander = xander is the song.

katie (katie), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 08:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm, this thread has got a bit sidetracked hasn't it. If we are stuck on the Lord Of The Rings I think that Samwise is the Xander - because I don't see Gollum as a secondary character (or Aragorn for that matter). My formulation of the Xander is that they are the character that changes the most via the experience of the main characters undergoing their rigid, plot necessitated character arcs. Buffy becomes slayer, slays, loves, dies, dies again and will have a proper ending. Willow outgrows crush on Xander, becomes witch etc. Xander stays Xander.

Mapping on to Lord Of The Rings: Aragorn starts out as sullen exile, fights lots, becomes king. Gollum starts off obsessed with the ring and finally manifests his destiny (Gollum is the Bez, or maybe Merry & Pippin are co-Bezes). Gandalf goes from Grey to White. Sam starts scared, remains scared, comes home still a bit scared but a fulled rounded person (Sam = Xander = Us).

In Baywatch Hobey was the Xander and CJ was the BEz.
ANyway surely Sam is the King in Return OF The King.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 08:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Aragorn is fairly obviously big and important in some way even to start with. He knows what he's doing, is given serious amounts of respect by Elrond, Gandalf and Galadriel etc. Boromir senses something about his kingliness in the scene with sword. He leads the party post Moria. In a straightforward, conventional reading of the film he is pretty damn important, in a way that ie Gimli isn't. His heir of Isildurness maybe kept secret from Sauron BUT NOT FROM US!
Xander, otoh, is the one slayerette who has no special skills/abilities/significance. Just a 'friend', whose role is as supporting wit and person to get in trouble. Not the leader (Giles), not the clever one (Willow), not the person who the damn series is named after (Buffy). Just an average guy who is somehow mixed up in all the stuff that goes on with his friends.

The point being, in straightforward narrative terms, Aragorn is revealed to be someone important, whose role no-one else could fill, even before we find out the third film is named after him (conventional interpretation here). Xander's role is simply a supporting one, that of a sidekick.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 08:38 (twenty-three years ago)

b-b-but xander is the HEART!! and he has racked up more field time than all of you put together (actually you may not haf seen this esipode RickyT it kicks ARSE)

katie (katie), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 08:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh and WE KNOW what being the heir of Isildur might entail from the first 5 minutes of the film. Y'know, the bit where Isildur King of Men 'kills' Sauron! And if that isn't enough there's a very big intake of breath from everyone when Aragorn's true identity is revealed at the council of Elrond. And then he's given the reforged sword that Isildur slew Sauron with. Is this not a big sign saying 'hey this Aragorn guy might be pretty important!'? At no point in any Buffy episode that I have seen is Xander described as a descendant of the Slayer or deserving carrier of the weapon that twatted the king of hell/Glory/over big bad before.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 08:49 (twenty-three years ago)

haha you lot are mental. Bez of Roobarb & Custard = birds.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 08:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Blimey, er, sorry about that. Got a little carried away there.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 08:55 (twenty-three years ago)

In Saved by the Bell (the original class!) the Xander is obv SCREECH and the Bez is the wrestler dude.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 08:59 (twenty-three years ago)

wha? heir to some DICKHEAD who keeps the frickin ring and gets killed by pointy arrers? anyway i have to go and so some work now.

katie (katie), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 09:05 (twenty-three years ago)

No Sarah in SBTB the Bez is the headmaster.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 09:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah - the Simpsons. Maggie is the Bez but it doesn't really have a Xander (in the first two series the Xander was Homer cos everyone thought it was about Bart. Now we know different like.)

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 09:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah no I disagree Tim, Mr Belding moves the narrative on at a rate of knots, and half of the gangs pranks involves him in a major player role - even if Belding himself didn't know that - you couldn't have SBTB w/o Belding. They tried to diminish his part in THE NEW CLASS and look what happened there - it were RUB!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 09:18 (twenty-three years ago)

movies!!!!

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 09:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Movies are rub. And whot of this ur... Xenakisis thingie eh Mark?

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 09:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Jaws: Dreyfuss is the Xander, the shark is Teh Bez.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 09:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Pokemon. Pickachu is the Bez, Ash is the Xander.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 09:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Boulez is the Bez of modern avant-garde composition, Xenakis is the Xander.

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 09:29 (twenty-three years ago)

will you be putting that last sentence on yr Xenakis review.

Jaworzyn describes boulez as the fatboy slim of the classical world.

today I'm watching a movie with a friend of mine. it's got dragons in it. can't wait...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 09:32 (twenty-three years ago)

clearly pokemon is all about ash and he is the principal character, so not a xander. if anyone is xander in pokemon, it is probably James (though Jesse has a good claim, esp with her childhood flashbacks). psyduck IS def the bez though.

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 09:38 (twenty-three years ago)

the problem with the xenakis piece at the moment is it's all complicated explanation and no gags: howevah the bez/xander joke requires a complicated explanation so it doesn't rescue me!!

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 09:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Robin of Sherwood: scarlet is the xander, much is bez.

Xena: gabrielle is xander (obv), joxer is bez (even looks and acts like him)

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 09:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Buffy: Xander is Xander, obv, but who is Bez?

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 09:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Bez = the Big Bads!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 09:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Please rephrase the question in terms more agreeable to me: eg: translate into Ulysses

the pinefox, Wednesday, 11 September 2002 09:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Telemachus is the Xander, the faithful old hound is the Bez.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 10:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Me No-No, I'm the Bez you know, friend of Ulysses.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 10:05 (twenty-three years ago)

what hound? (give me it in JJ not H)

the pinefox, Wednesday, 11 September 2002 10:29 (twenty-three years ago)

ARGOS (not the shop)= ATHOS (Bloom's dad's dead dog) = BEZ.

[Actually, Molly = Xander and Bez = Buck Mulligan (?)]

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 10:40 (twenty-three years ago)

ulysses the movie != ulysses the novelisation

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 10:46 (twenty-three years ago)

so we definitely can't talk about sam then?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 11:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Pinefox, i'm sure there MUST be an analogue of the faithful hounds in the story. go and read it again.

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 11:49 (twenty-three years ago)

and get those galleys back from the printers!!

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 12:06 (twenty-three years ago)

The Nipper: very good call on Athos.

Mark S: I need U terms as metaframework so I can discuss movies as you request: U is meta like your 'Bez / Xander' is meta, then I can talk about other stuff.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 11 September 2002 12:40 (twenty-three years ago)

oh ok: unfortunately i haf not read u for 198234298347 yrs so cannot help

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 12:51 (twenty-three years ago)

(Mark S flippantly throws away 12 digit prime in conversation.)

To be fair the Bez / Xander positions don't exist in every movie/book/tv show ever. Not even in a lot of them. Hence the beuaty of both sources.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 12:53 (twenty-three years ago)

the device is proppian in its analytic elegance

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

In Buffy - Joyce was Bez. Then Tara became Bez. Ha there is a pattern there obv. (Although maybe Cordelia was also Bez? Cordelia was also Xander too!)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

no spoilers!!

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 13:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Well who is the bez and xander of ile then? I say Hanle y is one and Ramosi the other. But I don't know which.

Sam (chirombo), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

(erm Graham why is it now the 12th on ILE? Have the Dunedin posse completely taken over now?)

Sam (chirombo), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Hanle y is the Bez.

Graham is the Xander.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

erm Sam you need to adjust yr settings (the server is in nz, hence 00:00 = there not eg GMT)

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 13:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Arr. Thanks. Mark s def not supernumerary.

Sam (chirombo), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 13:15 (twenty-three years ago)

i am glory

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 13:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Superannuated though

Sam (chirombo), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Happy Days: Marion Cunningham is the Bez, Joanie is the Xander.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 13:37 (twenty-three years ago)

in Ferris Buellers, Ed Rooney = Xander, Grace the receptionist = Bez

chris (chris), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 13:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Cheers: Xander = Norm. Bez = Coach/Woody.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete = OTM! I am almost tempted to FAP in order to buy him a pint but sod it, he can drink some Cornish booze instead when he next comes over. Possibly. OH WHEN OH WHEN will the strange booze hell end?

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

er can bez be the happy mondays' xander?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

No - he's their Bex. The monday weren't "about" Bez - they just couldn't have existed without him. Since the Monday were about Shaun Ryder they don't have a Bez.

This works quite well with ensemble sitcoms you know. Dad's Army: About Pike, Warden Whatsiface was the Bez.

Fill in the blanks please for M*A*S*H (easy), Porridge, Are You Being Served, ALlo Allo & Heidi-Hi.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Heidi Hi? About a holiday camp in the Alps staffed by a load of irritatingly chirpy girls who miraculously teach a bunch of wheelchair-bound kids to walk?

Emma, Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Mash = radar-Zander/ klinger = bez

porridge = godber- zander/ wet prison officer = bez

chris (chris), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

M*A*S*H: Klinger = Bez, Houlihan = Xander.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:23 (twenty-three years ago)

(Radar left halfway through the show = Radar can't be Xander.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:23 (twenty-three years ago)

but it got a lot shitter and became directionless after Radar left, so maybe he was...

chris (chris), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

No, Chris is right. Radar = Xander which was why it went tits up.

Not sure about Houlihan though. Chris is very good at this game though.

How about Oliver Twist? Great Expectations? Boon?

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

this thread was meant to be abt movies :( :'( :…(

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

It may be more accurate to say that Radar was the original Xander, but they turned Houlihan into Xander after he left.

In the play adaptation of Great Expectations, Estella is the Xander and Abel Magwitch is the Bez.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

we've already said movies are rub. this works best for long running character-based things anyway.

Fawlty Towers: Polly = xander, manuel = bez. not sure about manuel, but it's not the chef bloke for sure

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Lovejoy= Eric = Zander/ tinker = bez (definitely not Lady Jane)

chris (chris), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Oi S - when were threads ever about what you wanted them to be. Okay, Pink Panther movies : Dreyfuss is the Xander, Kato is the Bez. Happy?

Close Encounters Of The Third Kind: Truffaut plays the Xander, Mashed Potato is the Bez.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Spaced does not have a xander. Marcia (landlady) appears to be the bez, and perhaps the xander as well??

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

not mad soldier Mike???

chris (chris), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

What Chris said (curse you New Messages Alert)

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

What about FLIGHT ov thee NAVIGATOR?

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Bez= Funny alien pet
Xander = The Twisted Sister fan nurse woman

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

In Fawlty Towers the Major = Bez, doesn't he?

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

chris (chris), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually:
Xander = The Twisted Sister fan nurse woman's ROBOT.
Bez= Admiring guy at petrol station

(those are the only character I remember, sorry)

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

mike in spaced, no. major in FT, YES!

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

ha ha, major in FT = psyduck in pokemon. so true

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No no, Xander = funny alien pet as he is the most tragic ie "he is angry because I won't take him home. He does not know his planet was destroyed by a comet" - close up on the cute little guys trusting eyes!

And then he goes home with little David and sees fireworks! It is all about him!

Bez = Twisted Sister fan Sarah JP as it looks like she is important but I think the robot was acting of his own acccord. However it is sadly not the robots story, which essentially is just a mode of transit.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

No no the Bez in FT = Tanya Headon.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Xander in FT = Fred Solinger!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

24 hr party people: Bez=xander and ian c.=bez

Aaron A., Wednesday, 11 September 2002 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Memento : Xander=Teddy; Bez=Sammy Jankis (I could have this the wrong way round tho)

Filling in the blanks for Labyrinth, Dark Crystal & The Princess Bride is U&K!

Ess Kay (esskay), Thursday, 12 September 2002 02:01 (twenty-three years ago)

guns n roses. SLASH = xander. bez is easy too -- Izzy Stradlin. "where's izzy?" etc

i know it's not a movie (YET!!) but it is a pinball machine

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 12 September 2002 03:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Princess Bride: Xander = Inigo Montoya; Bez = Andre the Giant character.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 12 September 2002 13:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Labyrinth: Xander= Hoggle, Bez= Dave Bowie.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 12 September 2002 13:19 (twenty-three years ago)

earth culture across all time: bez = david bowie

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 12 September 2002 13:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark that's true, but only if [earth culture across all time] = [life of Iggy Pop]. Which it may or may not.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 12 September 2002 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
this thread never reached its full potential

shawshank redemption: xander is the morgan freeman character (SR is probably the first time i noticed this sort of technique)

If Darth Vader is the Xander of eps 4-6 then who is the Xander of 1-3? Obi-Wan, clearly.

R2D2 is clearly the Bez of the whole series. Chewbacca is sort of a Bez too.

Back to the Future: Xander is obv Crispin Glover. Bez is, hmmm, the bald principal?

ryan (ryan), Saturday, 14 January 2006 23:21 (nineteen years ago)

In Preacher (the comic) the Xander was obviously Cassidy. Is there anyone who actually cared about Jesse-the-straight-as-arrow-supposed-lead-character?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 15 January 2006 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

In Sandman the Bez = Matthew the Raven, and weirdly enough, the Xander = Morpheus himself. Although he was the title character, no one thought it was gonna be his story.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 15 January 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

... and then there were three

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 15 January 2006 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

Mark, I tried to read that text two times, but I understood nothing of it.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 15 January 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

Twelve Angry Men - Xander=Lee J Cobb

More comics

Cerebus (the first two thirds, anyway) - Xander=Astoria, Bez=The Roach

chap who would dare to work for the man (chap), Sunday, 15 January 2006 17:12 (nineteen years ago)
