so what do you like jim?
i must admit i never have heard tugboat. and it's been a long time since i saw any bands in melbourne except small goods because a friend of mine follows them around everywhere they go. i also know the kids in fort mary but have thus far avoided seeing them play because i can feel it in my waters that they're going to be really bad. (jonno if you ever read this... um, boy is my face red. the fort mary emails rule though!!)
past memories: sandro were really awful.
i like gaslight radio though. i have a feeling that ned would like them but i could be totally off the mark.

i saw gaslight radio when i was in melb a little while back and thought they were damn fine. 'hitch on the leaves' is a gorgeous record but they don't seem to have done much since and that came out, in, what, '98? (correct me if i'm wrong). they played in sydney earlier this month but i missed them. i envy that melbourne's managed to retain its live venues. sydney's a wasteland as far as that goes, though the annandale and sandringham have both reopened recently, so there might be some hope yet.

yep, it came out in 98, i remember because i saw them support pulp then! i think they brought out one or two singles since then but yes mostly they've been very very quiet. (not surprising for a band with one member who always plays with his back to the audience)

gersey have a member in common with gaslight i think - gaslight were originally from brisbane but are now official property of melbourne, so i assume the same for gersey. the truth be known i can't remember what gersey sound like despite having seen them once...

minimum chips are droney + lofi and sound like a gloomy stereolab - they had a 'greatest hits' come out this year... it gets a bit samey for me but there are still some good songs. i like 'furniture'

man, i wish i'd discovered the thread a little earlier than now.

Gaslight Radio always surprised me by being rather good indeed. Their biggest problem is laziness. I used to be in a band with their keyboard player.

Gersey are Melbourne through and through. On record they are stunning, live they have a tendency to be hideously dull, although a recent show I saw of theirs was quite excellent. I definitely endorse the purchase of either (or both) of their albums.

I used to adore Min.Chips but I got sick of their recordings. It's reasonably well know what my opinion of the Wadley brothers' bizarre approach towards sound is.

Hmmm.. what else..

Tugboat are poised to take over! No, not really. Especially not now that Architecture In Helsinki are back. Apparently it's desperately uncool to not like them. I haven't heard their recordings yet, but again they have never come across well in a live setting.

Registered Nurse are back to remind us that rock needn't be garage, pub or punk.

I haven't seen Fort Mary. Love of Diagrams are fucking ace. Diving Bell are like late-80s Perth and rock my world with their velvety sounds.

Jet are boring rock nonsense.

Gersey almost made me feel sick because when I saw them I was developing an aversion to those sincerely soppy rhythmless Augie March/Something for Kate-ish types. I hated the way they would slowly and metronomically bang away at a chord, gradually building up "emotional intensity" or whatever, and then drop their heart-shattering chord changes. I hated the way it was so boringly effective, the way it pushed my buttons the way Radiohead, Mercury Rev & even Boards of Canada used to. I thought I was being all ILMist-popist by deciding that they sucked. Idunno maybe I was wrong.

I think spending 8 minutes of a 10 minute song building up to the climax is overkill. Their shorter songs don't seem so cynically put together.

shout outs to Kirsty Stegwazi (what was her band called?), the Foots (well, the purple shirt they gave me), & Tugboat. Where were the Sugargliders from? I'm fairly sure Twelve24 were Melbourne-based too, but I've only heard their cover of "Velouria" (& they've broked up).

haha though re : australian music I still regard it as some outback wasteland of punkmetal, with the exception of melbourne as indiepop city. & er Avalanches & Spiderbait (though I've only heard "Arse Huggin' Pants" & don't want to spoil it) & possibly Gerling.

Kirsty was in Bedridden and is now in the Bites. The Foots are ace but seem to have fallen off the face of the earth. The Sugargliders are Melbourne thru'n'thru - they became the Steinbecks but are now just the duo of Meadows brothers once more..

Twelve24 are from Sydenee and are lovely peeps. ver 'boat would lurve to come to Noisyland (esp Dunedin).. if any nice NZ kids can send me details of venues/bookers/other useful stuff 'twould make it all happen faster!

the Presets are from Sydney. but anyway! interesting inasmuch as you can't really draw a line between their regular band and the side-project, the switch from delicate postrock to thumping club music completely disparate. mostly sounds too samey (and mastered to a loud mush) for me to enjoy EXCEPT I really love the last track on the EP, hissing about sexual frustration when looking at Hot Girls while Out At Night. If Goth clubs played lots of stuff like this I would go to them!

djed at the midnight juggernauts gig (sort've synthpunky stuff - toxic lipstick, primitive calculators, screamers, soft pink truth, metal urbain, cybotron, &c), but got waaay too drunk on the rider & all I remember about their performance was the "yaaa, yaaaiiiaaaiiiyaaa" bit of "raised by wolves" & dancing on the stage. fell down a staircase later that night, ha. they were really subdued/shy as people, & had surprising chops.

next question on an aussie-bands-who-might-be-coming-over-here tip - what are the presets like live? is the "goth cut copy" tag true?

nah, "Stranded" covers 77-91, & this was . . . 88-97? It came from a slightly more labelcentric/business perspective, maybe. Google's no help at all!

update: actually, managed through googletrition to work it out (had to input "Stranded" + other aussie music books that I discovered like "Blunt" & found my way to a bibliography) - it was "The Sell-In: How The Music Business Seduced Alternative Rock", by Craig Mathieson. "Inner City Sound", "Stranded" or "Blunt" good reads?

Blunt is super-fucking-awesome-great. The Sell-In is a dud, the worst-edited book I have ever read. It's a good enough rough draft that you'd show to your editor to justify the advance, but totally not ready to go to press.

I heard some Presets tracks on 3RRR (via web streaming); they sound like a more rock Snap! Crakk! or something.

I also got a copy in the mail of the new BAM BAM EP, "Pet Hates", which is pretty good, in a Transvision-Vamp-meets-60s-garage-rock sort of vein. I saw them live a few times, and they generally put on a pretty tight show.

Another new Melbourne act I recently heard a bit of is a chap named Francis Plagne, who has a recording out on Synaesthesia. His music is sort of art-pop with musique concrete elements. I've only heard two tracks, but they show promise.

most of those bands are very good at what they do, i just don't dig what some of them do. i like the crayon fields a lot, i could see them making a really really good album. i have never seen laura which is a subtantial oversight on my part. i don't have a lot of time for city city city to be honest - i used to think they were capable of making amazing records but now they just leave me completely cold.

i still contend that there is no "scene" per se.

- new buffalo
- baseball
- ninety nine

there are loads more. i love melbourne!
melbourne music scene is world class.

both. a lot of people really like what they do, and to be fair they played a gig where i really enjoyed them, but i found myself liking each show less and less. probably worth keeping in mind that i have little time for (a) instrumental bands and (b) 90% of post rock.
