Between Calum, Em@il and Mike its not worth reading 80% of the posts.
Since the ILxORs of old know where to go, let the NeuILMeRs rant if they must.

How to bump signal to noise?

but really just ignore. READ the title of the thread and who's posting and then don't open it if its geir or calum or whatever. that's what i'm doing. there are some OK discussions nicole.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe the name of the threads poster should be visible on the "New Answers" page the same way it is visible on the "New Questions" page.

YEAH WOULDNT WANT YOURSELF TO GET CONTAMINATED NOW WOULD WE.

, Friday, 4 April 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

don't look at it is a dumb argument, so the solution is to ignore for example a thread which is obviously intended to clutter the board and take up a load of space?

Something needs to be done, "don't look at it" is a dead end which is stupid in relation to anything, if someone makes a point about anything you could say "don't look at it/read it/listen to it". It's pretty dumb.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Its admitting defeat in a way.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing that bugs me is when good, intellegent threads are pushed off the bottom edge of the list by drivel.
(Yes, yes, yes. I know that I'm guilty of posting bad threads. I admit it. But I *try* to post 9 good threads for every bad one.)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

of course if a POX thread is started by Julio we MUST ALL READ IT AS IT WILL BE CHOCK FULL OF INSIGHTFUL CRITICISM AND DISCUSSION

schnellschnell, Friday, 4 April 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep. Thats true.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

no it isn't. if trolls are ignored they go away. simple.

how much space does a thread take really. there are always going to be too many threads bcz we have abt 60-70(?) fairly active users.

you look at the title of the thread. how long does it take to decide if a thread is going to interest you or not. a few sec at most.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

IM NOT GOING TO START MORE THREADS.

LOOKING FORWARD TO READING YOUR INTELLIGENT AND INSIGHTFUL THREADS.

, Friday, 4 April 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not simple though, the past has proven that action is not always the wrong way to go, but I guess non commital bullshit is business as usual eh Julio?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

HOWS THE WEATHER UP ON THAT HIGH HORSE?

, Friday, 4 April 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

no it isn't. if trolls are ignored they go away. simple.

Gierbot the exception to the rule?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Also the thread today took up alot of space visually on the board, if you can't see how that has an effect, ie people look at ILM see this and then leave, then perhaps you're stupid. I'm not suggesting for definite something be done, but "ignore it" just ends the discussion and is totally fucking useless advice, absolute idiocy, ILX is good at discussing problems, most of us anyway.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

ronan: if you want to make ILX more 'interesting' then you better start thinking abt 'insightful' stuff like email is saying. put some intelligent threads (despite the complaining no one has said they are getting the fuck out of here for good). you really should give it a go instead of whining as usual.

(this has come up before BTW, ronan loves complaining when he can probably do something about this)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio, we all know the reason you're trotting out all this "just ignore them" stuff is because you LOVE the trolls, they entertain you.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

despite the complaining no one has said they are getting the fuck out of here for good

Problem is, a lot of people just look at the crap that's posted and up and leave without making a big pronouncement about never posting again. It's no coincidence that a lot of the more insightful posters aren't around much nowadays.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

despite the complaining no one has said they are getting the fuck out of here for good

Actually, this isn't true - and there are one or two very prominent posters indeed who have been making noises to this effect off-board.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

''no it isn't. if trolls are ignored they go away. simple.
Gierbot the exception to the rule?''

some would argue he isn't. but really, who could be upset by him. he has this one idea on music and doesn't want to argue abt it. so don't. he doesn't use any other names (as far as i know) so this is a v easy thing to do.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio: no it isn't. if trolls are ignored they go away. simple.
Noodles: Gierbot the exception to the rule?
I guess this where we declare the beginning of an experiment. Don't answer any posts/threads by Geir/Calum/Em@il and see if this discourages bad behaviour.
(Yes. I know, I'm guilty of being trolls mockfodder. I suspect even the 'bleh' technique is giving them too much of myself.)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

''Actually, this isn't true - and there are one or two very prominent posters indeed who have been making noises to this effect off-board.''

and they may go. for a bit. they might come back. or not. and if they don't they'll probably be forgotten about (though their commnets are there, and new posters can marvel at some of the archived commnets)

''Problem is, a lot of people just look at the crap that's posted and up and leave without making a big pronouncement about never posting again. It's no coincidence that a lot of the more insightful posters aren't around much nowadays.''

ppl do get burnt out by the whole thing. trolls are a v convinient excuse. eventually most of us we'll be somewhere else in a year or ten.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Labelling Geir a troll pisses me off more than Calum's nonsense.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

''Julio, we all know the reason you're trotting out all this "just ignore them" stuff is because you LOVE the trolls, they entertain you.''

some do, some don't. i don't call posters that entertain me 'trolls' tho'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, but wait...wasn't there alot of gnashing of teeth about "how much the New ILM sucks" right before we moved away from Greenspun?
I suspect this goes in waves. The signal to noise ratio goes up and down over time. An open forum means new people come in, crash the party, spill beer on the carpet (and the dog), eat all the dip, start fights and then break the priceless ming vase.
Come back a couple years later, and all the party-crashers are now the domesticated homesteaders complaining about the noisy new neighbors.
Hell, I remember when Alex in NYC and Julio Desouza were the new guys...and look at how accepted and key to the ILM experience they are now.
I even remember when Calum and Geir was here LAST TIME. They came, they left. ILM still stands.
Viva la ILM! It shall last unto Eternity!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad Julio, you don't really entertain me, I suppose cos I think you're a twat. I also doubt you actually are capable reading and understand the posts you respond to, that part is slightly entertaining I suppose.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry I meant if you don't like me calling you a twat then don't read it

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

me calling you a twat was what I was referring to, if you don't like it don't read it, the twat thing, me calling you a twat

I refuse to honor your puny moratorium!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you not read it Julio? I called you a twat? I was trolling.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I might start a thread abt yr trolling ronan. it might get 600 posts but it won't lead anywhere anyway.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I doubt it would, first of all you're not able to type in full sentences, and secondly you've yet to prove you actually have an opinion on anything, also you should be careful, you're attacking the moderators and anyone else who suggested changes as much as me there, this could be lead to even more argument with people who are not your little brother.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

(*insert obligatory "cant we all just get along?" post*)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

''also you should be careful, you're attacking the moderators and anyone else who suggested changes as much as me there''

I am arguing for ignoring so called trolls. I haven't attacked anyone and if they feel they have been they should come back here and say so.

you're not suggesting changes. and you're whining as usual ronan. and you love it!

mark s (mark s), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I've made my position clear, I think it's a bit sad to hear you accuse me of "whining" and attempt to belittle me when you use ILE to discuss your lack of a social life/girlfriend regularly. I mean I'm all for that, but perhaps you should consider it when you attemt to put forward such an ignorant front towards other people who complain about something.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think any one poster — or even any one "faction" — currently dominates this seething morass

mark s (mark s), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

we have factions? how do I quit the one I'm in and join a new one?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

yes mark, the titles sure do make for good reading

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

and i think ronan's and julio's tiff here is a picture-perfect disproof of schnellschnell's "freakytrigger-blogger clique" theory: the wars WITHIN any one group of ppl have always been far more intense and spiteful (and potentially offputting to newbies), than occasional rumbles between groupoids

mark s (mark s), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

jess that's a point abt style not content

mark s (mark s), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

the wars WITHIN any one group of ppl have always been far more intense and spiteful
Is this a case of "You only hate the ones you love" or more of "if you take the time to really know somebody, you can find something to dispise them for?"

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

its mista sinkah! making an all too rare appearance!!! and how are we this evening?

''I think it's a bit sad to hear you accuse me of "whining" and attempt to belittle me when you use ILE to discuss your lack of a social life/girlfriend regularly''

but you're still whining/overreacting tho' (I mean, to accuse me of attacking moderators is kinda funny). you always think things are sad/depressing when you are the person who can do something abt this by posting threads that are insightful and intelligent or whatever.

I have never posted a thread on my social (or non-) social life or one on relationship advice. In fact it was only one post on someone else's thread which i thought fitted in there.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 4 April 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Friday, 4 April 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

ILM is hard work: its hard coming up with good thread ideas and its hard to phrase and then if the thread gets going its hard to keep it on course, to keep it in the direction you want.

no wonder there are so many list threads.

EC, Friday, 4 April 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio don't you even see?

I really resent this attitude, and to be honest I might as well stop being polite. The thread I started compalining about the boards got alot of answers, yes, and I accept that so what that does not make it important or a good thread.

But the reality is lots of people agreed with me, changes were discussed on other threads and they were made. You imply that I was the only one who felt ILE was crap and I threw a tantrum and although everyone else disagreed they decided to change things just to placate me or whatever.

This is utter bollox, the thread is ages old now but you know full well as does anyone else that lots of people went on the record as agreeing with me. Changes would not have been made just because of me, and you know that full fucking well too. Changes were discussed and made the same way any other changes have been discussed before their introduction.

You accuse me of whining and yet doing anything and yet all you ever do is attempt to end thought or shoot down someones efforts. This has been a consistent thing since Mel's radiohead comments which you childishly sneered at last year.

I argue or "whine" about things I care about, if you want to argue with me and say I'm wrong then fucking do it on the threads and point out where exactly. If you don't then don't. Frankly I'm sure you're delighted now as I'm quite annoyed, but it's a petty victory.

How about for once not being such a spineless fucking dork and actually setting out your stall and getting behind something, having an idea, arguing with someone beyond petty fucking squabbling. I'm sick of your constant snide comments, frankly I shouldn't even give them the time of day but it may be the only way to get a sincere response.

You obviously have some problem with stuff I've posted, you've never pointed out these problems at the time, your accusation is pretty vague. I don't see you responding to mark or tom's threads with a "so what", or the kind of attempt to end conversation you are so fond of.

ILM is hard work because there are robots like yourself who contribute absolutely nothing because the idea of caring about something or someone getting annoyed over a band they like or something is totally fucking alien to you, is emotion really that difficult? If so you really could do with getting out of the fucking house for once.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 4 April 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I like ice-cream.

I just wanted to say that.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 4 April 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

''This is utter bollox, the thread is ages old now but you know full well as does anyone else that lots of people went on the record as agreeing with me.''

even if that's the case (which you're right, most ppl have agreed so far in thsi thread) what's wrong with disagreeing and putting another point of view. dan doesn't think geir is a troll for instance (and he has argued this elsewhere).

''You accuse me of whining and yet doing anything and yet all you ever do is attempt to end thought or shoot down someones efforts. This has been a consistent thing since Mel's radiohead comments which you childishly sneered at last year.''

I said i was sorry for those (and it was a bad day for me but yes i was an idiot). even so, you could point out that I've been sneering at the latest radiohead thread, and its been largely ignored. but ILM has a killing time at work aspect to it.

''How about for once not being such a spineless fucking dork and actually setting out your stall and getting behind something, having an idea, arguing with someone beyond petty fucking squabbling.''

I'm not squabbling. throughout this thread I have picked on specific comments and tried to put another view point.

What it comes down to is: I don't think ignoring trolls is a bad idea (or 'dunb'). I've done it and many have. remember how b*cky was ignored by the majority and she went away.

Also, many new moderators are being introduced and they are having to learn abt it. they are being tested at all times but steps are being taken (a new yahoo group has been set up so that moderators can talk and a second opinion on things can be obtained).

''You obviously have some problem with stuff I've posted, you've never pointed out these problems at the time, your accusation is pretty vague. I don't see you responding to mark or tom's threads with a "so what", or the kind of attempt to end conversation you are so fond of.''

I have only had lenghty args w/you on two threads i think. I've never had any problems with the stuff you posted bcz frankly, I hardly read 'em. we have met on these type of threads and I just think that you're overreacting to all of this.

''ILM is hard work because there are robots like yourself who contribute absolutely nothing because the idea of caring about something or someone getting annoyed over a band they like or something is totally fucking alien to you, is emotion really that difficult?''

I care deeply abt ILM. I get annoyed at music just like you and everyone else. and i am made of flesh and blood. I just don't think killfiles are the solution to anything.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 4 April 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

ha! many spelling mistakes.

hey graham, set up a spell checker or something...;-)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 4 April 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

But if you agree that others agreed with me then why suggest as you did that the changes only took place because of my original post? Can you admit then that that was a stupid thing to say.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 4 April 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're starting to refer to that thread on ILE then my ans is: I don't rememeber specific comments. I juust rememebr it as being 'amusing'.

but as far as this thread goes I have done nothing wrong and have tried to argue with everyone and not just you ronan.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 4 April 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

But you just mocked the thread 2 minutes ago!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 4 April 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

aargh...I have to re-read that thread.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 4 April 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

this whole thread: I'm arguing for ignoring ppl. then you come in and call it 'dumb' and shit and i argue with you. but then i start making jokes as usual. so i might have said something that has been misinterpreted.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 4 April 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, Geir is obviously no troll. I always thought he was great just because I could visualize the ILM massive angrily shaking their fists at their computer monitors while reading his posts. Now I know this to be true!

original bgm, Friday, 4 April 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

ronan and julio, just fucking grow up, the pair of you.

annoyed, Friday, 4 April 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

You trying having an discussion or arguement with Ronan and/or Julio when Geirbot pipes in two or three posts inbetween every other post saying the same mechanical and laughable things and extend that behavior for a few monthes. He's a human spambot and as undesirable as Calum's homophobic outbursts.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 4 April 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

< FLASHBACK MODE >...ahhh, yes...But the worst ever was Alison Houston. She was as high-strung and paranoid as Calum, and as brutally pompous as Geir at his worst. So I declare her the Ubertrolless Galactrix.< /FLASHBACK MODE >

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 4 April 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Noodles do you honestly fail to see the difference between Geir and Calum?

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 4 April 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

''I'm sick of your constant snide comments, frankly I shouldn't even give them the time of day but it may be the only way to get a sincere response.''

oh, and this one: I did start giving sincere resposes (you know, the commnets where I'm quoting someone else, those are sincere).

but once you started being an idiot then it had to be jokey/insincere etc.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 4 April 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, even if he may be annoying to some, I don't think Geir is honestly trolling. Just making his (very non-ILM) stance on things known... even if these things are being said over and over and over and over... (you have a point there)

original bgm, Friday, 4 April 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, I suppose someone has to stick up for Coldplay and Oasis and Travis!

original bgm, Friday, 4 April 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

And MELODY MAAAAAN.

original bgm, Friday, 4 April 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get this Geir thing, as far as I knew all he does is start a few threads here and there, all of them about music, and isn't ever rude to anyone. Is the problem that he keeps stubbornly clinging to and voicing his opinions all the time even though they're so manifestly WRONG?

After he was asked to post less threads, the only time the board was spammed because of him was when every fucker decided to start a joke topic about him at the same time.

Ferg (Ferg), Friday, 4 April 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I see the difference but I think their behaviour has the same end result.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 4 April 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

how'd this turn into a Julio vs. Ronan thread?

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 4 April 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

...the gods willed it.

oops (Oops), Friday, 4 April 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 4 April 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

...the gods willed it.
Time to overthrow those gods and start a new Religion.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 4 April 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

with the whole geir thing: he started posting loads of threads. Tom told him to stop and now he doesn't post as many. ppl did post threads abt him tho'. but I haven't seen one in a while. got tired of the novelty and that's abt it.

One extra thing: the OP10 was prob bcz of me. I posted a thread abt the beatles' 'Red album'. geir did an OPO beatles the next day. and then he just said 'one. or ten'. and that I think was the beginning of OP10. loads of threads but not so many this week as ppl have got tired of the novelty (even i got annoyed but i ended up posting three of those).

and there'll be more of this shit. there will be more noise.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 4 April 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Why all the desire to CONTROL a free forum?

Usenets current state is the result we desire to avoid.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 4 April 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Why all the desire to CONTROL a free forum?

this is not now, nor has it ever been an unmoderated board. The moderation here is light compared to other internet fora, certainly, but it is not "free". If you want a "free" forum (in both senses of the word) then try here:

http://groups.yahoo.com

they have the tools for you, if that's what you want.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 4 April 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Granted thats true about usenet. but I really dont see playfullness as destructive Its more flow oriented. You get a hair up your ass and want to be a dick once in a while its no big thing in the greater whole of the board. An obnoxious thread may dissolve into the most intresting exchange of the day.
Imagine you are at work and your banter is varied with the personel. Some serious some not. I see no destructive intensions in any of the posters mentioned just a little boredom. i like to post here because you are all fairly amusing. If you become humorless I'm sure all the new posters will leave you to yourselves eventually. Is that what you want?

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Friday, 4 April 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

well the complaint is i think that the current ahem playfulness is logjam-oriented rather than flow-oriented: but i also mainly think the solution is more better flow from those who are good at it

mark s (mark s), Friday, 4 April 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I blame hstencil for this.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 4 April 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe I missed the beginning of this in-joke, but what is the story behind the "I blame hstencil" comeback? I've seen that line used at least 6 times in the last month.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 4 April 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

this is not the place for you rockist GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN!!!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 5 April 2003 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio - yer right - Ronan does whine an awful lot. But Julio is also right on two accounts - 1. You start a thread you are interest in - it is up to you to keep it on track (thus the challenge of ilx) and 2. If it does not interest you - just do not read it. Very simple rules to follow. I like Calum's threads because Spencer's picture of ducks makes me feel all spring-like and reminds me how much I want to go outside...

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 5 April 2003 07:20 (twenty-two years ago)

How right is Ronan, Sonny?

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 07:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno. He is good at rallying people? I find endless discussion threads humourous - they should be more about encouragement 'hey, you want to start a good thread, THEN GO AND DO IT AND KEEP IT ON TRACK', then endless bitching. Cause really that's the answer. The negative side of these threads is that it encouraging bullying on posters that need not fit into your personal preferences. Moderation, schmoderation - we as the good people of ILM can take control of this situation with Calum. Et al. There are always going to be people like Calum posting (I don't think Email is a troll nor is Geir). I like email because he writes good billboard. But whining and then discussing how good ILE is - and then whining on how bad ILE is - and so on - is endless. But what do I know? I'm an official troll!!!!!!!

BAHAAHAHHAA....

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 5 April 2003 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

If you'll look at the board it's obvious I've been contributing to threads plenty. Also whoever the anonymous person is, I think that's pretty lame.

Anyway this whole thread was idiotic and I wish I hadn't got so annoyed but I don't have anything to prove around here anyway.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 5 April 2003 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Exactly. My ethnos is put out or shut up. If you don't want to contribute to the boards - then don't go onto the board complaining that the board does not mirror exactly what you want on it. That is more annoying than a Calum or Geir thread.

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 5 April 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Also I'd just like to say that I am not a moderator and Custos suggestion that I threatened to moderate Julio is total and utter bullshit. Surprise surprise.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 5 April 2003 09:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I must say Julio is on the money with his 'yer are very humourous because of yer HUMONGOUS ego' comment. Because, no offence, I find you the most tedious and pedantic poster on ILM. So much so, it's kind of funny.

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 5 April 2003 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Wahey, I certainly rattled your cage didn't I?

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 5 April 2003 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

No actually you did not. I wish you would. I wish I could jump up and down about what you had said or the threads you produce. I really would. I wish I could produce streams of passionate and hate and love writing about you. But I can't. It's sort of a meh on the other side of this screen. You are not unique. You are part of the 'meh' population. You words taste like headaches. Dull, throbbing, insistent and always there.

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 5 April 2003 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

What are you saying!!!!!!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 5 April 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

That you are too literal and unimaginative for me to possibly be interested in you. Playtime is over, Ronan, I've got paid writing work to finish.

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 5 April 2003 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

''Anyway this whole thread was idiotic and I wish I hadn't got so annoyed but I don't have anything to prove around here anyway.''

I don't have anything to prove either but I am going to stand up for my 'ignoring it' type args (even if you think its fucking stupid thing to do). this is a public board and as a consequence you get ppl you're not going to like.

I am going to keep arguing bcz I like this place and have posted here for two years.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 5 April 2003 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

arguing abt it = *not* ignoring it

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 5 April 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

yes mark. thanks for seeing another contradiction but if you think its a troll then don't you think that ignoring it (not looking at it, not interacting at all with it) is the best option?

not everyone thinks that geir and email are trolls.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 5 April 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

sure maybe ignoring it is the philosophy but then ignore it, and don't tell other people to ignore it, ie shut up.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 5 April 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

could we please stop taking doomie's advice about how to make ilm better?

tom is right: think "troll rehabilitation" works is partially how we got to this point in the first place

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 5 April 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

whatever...

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 5 April 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I misread that first part as "how to make ilm bitter."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

it's already full of lemons.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 5 April 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

so make lemonade.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

SIGH. What is wrong with the advice of GEEZ GUYS LET'S STOP TALKING ABOUT IT AND LET'S MAYBE CONTRIBUTE TO THE MUSIC THREADS? Pah. This is just an ILE pissing contest. SIGH.

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 5 April 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

What Jess you are going to use your house as the facility for the 'Troll Rehabilition Unit'? Have you checked into funding? What programmes would it involve?

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 5 April 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

just for the record,i agree that geir is by no means a troll...
he's got quite annoying and stubborn opinions at times,to the extent where at first i thought he was a troll, but he does genuinely participate in discussions...
the great thing about ilm is that there is someone to defend every strain of music,so we can hardly complain about having someone obsessed with melody and eighties synth pop and ivol novella songwriting...
and he was told to stop posting so many threads and did so...
given that there are people here who delight in using reverse indie snobbery to prove a point,i don't think we can complain about geir...

robin (robin), Saturday, 5 April 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

"...suggestion that I threatened to moderate Julio is total and utter bullshit"
Ronan, you said the following earlier in the thread...
also you should be careful, you're attacking the moderators and anyone else who suggested changes as much as me there
When said out loud it may sound innocuous, but onscreen it implies a threat of moderation. (I always assumed you were a moderator and had the power to carry out this threat.)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 5 April 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I was actually warning Julio that he might actually have to argue with some of the people whose boots he licks generally.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't lick anybody's boots and yr suggestion that i was attacking moderators (one of the moderators here was noodles and there was no way i was attacking him) was idiotic.

''sure maybe ignoring it is the philosophy but then ignore it, and don't tell other people to ignore it, ie shut up.''

if you stop whining then i might.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

you still have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about, seriously if you can't comprehend english then you shouldn't be so snarky.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

but seriously if you think i was attacking moderators then you are the one that has comprehension problems.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

but you don't even know what my point is, seriously stop this fraudulent pretending to understand nonsense. I mean I realise it's gotten you pretty far, but it's now pretty obvious the reason you're so constantly short is because you have no idea what's going on!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

How can saying "you're attacking the moderators...as much as me" imply Ronan is a moderator?

I think much of the difference between R & J here is because there is approximately zero overlap in what they are interested in musically - I doubt Julio reads Ronan's hugely enthusiastic threads on house records, and I don't suppose Ronan reads Julio's Derek Bailey and free jazz threads, so they don't see each other's positive contribution to ILM.

I agree with Nick above about the word 'troll' - the way it is being used here, it is almost useless. What Geir, Calum and EM@IL do has nothing useful in common. Geir's single track mind can be infuriating (though I think it's funny more often), but since he stopped creating so many threads, I can find nothing remotely wrong in what he does. EM@IL would love to be annoying, but everyone pretty much ignores him - he is that most pitiable of creatures, a troll who isn't sharp enough to really trouble anyone.

Calum has started some perfectly good threads on which he has contributed perfectly good posts, but he is the one who troubles me, if only a little, because I think if I'd first shown up and a proportion of the first thread titles I read were overtly misogynistic, I wouldn't have hung around, and I am pretty sure some others would say the same thing. I do worry a little that he will put some good people off, particularly women. However, I don't think he is necessarily just doing this to annoy and distress people - as I said, he makes quite a few perfectly good contributions. Has anyone asked him to keep his fear/hatred of women out of the headlines, at least? Surely an attempt at a reasonable request is worth a try? I suspect it wouldn't work, because he is utterly convinced that he isn't at all sexist, but I would have hoped that someone might have tried this before asking moderators to delete or ban him or something.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

''but you don't even know what my point is, seriously stop this fraudulent pretending to understand nonsense. I mean I realise it's gotten you pretty far, but it's now pretty obvious the reason you're so constantly short is because you have no idea what's going on!''

I don't what yr point is, you are finally right about something. you just love to have a good whine, that's all.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The problem is Julio has been consistently rude on lots of threads I made, the reverse is not true. He picks his battles really because he's so spineless but it was always going to come to a head, I doubt anyone else would put up with childish fucking "so what" comments on every thread where they feel passionately about something.

Is there anyway any of what I'm saying is not true? No. Is there any excuse? No. Is there any chance of Julio apologising, admitting he often acts like a dick on threads where he has no idea what the source of passion is for the person posting it? No.

I look as much of a twat now for actually getting riled into responding but the reality is this has been on the cards for ages, I did not start it, and I think that's glaringly obvious. As much as I mock, I genuinely believe Julio flippantly reads threads, gleaning only a very vague gist of what the point is, he does however detect when someone feels strongly about something, and his only response to this is to tell them to shut up.

I have seldom if ever seen Julio attempt to discuss something, I have seldom if ever seen him show he has any idea where someone else is coming from. Even here I am told to "quit whining", in the usual condescending way. I'd rather appear a twat myself if it makes you realise what a wretch you are.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan!

Repeat after me: STOP YOUR WHINING!!!

do this a few times, it might do you some good.

Why can't you just admit you enjoy being ignorant on these threads and this whole row would just end? Thanks for the life advice, clearly you're a real success story!!!

Losing what? I've already lost because I actually got involved here, the fact that you appear proud of this thread says it all really. Is it any wonder you have so little interaction with we human beings?

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 5 April 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio and I meet for a drink occasionally, both of us being at UCL and all. I'm not sure whether that counts as human interaction.

This thread is rapidly heading for the playground. I'm sort of enjoying watching it.

say, ilm has got really shit since i (kind of ) left, hey?

michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

*sigh* it was going that way, I suppose.

''He picks his battles really because he's so spineless but it was always going to come to a head, I doubt anyone else would put up with childish fucking "so what" comments on every thread where they feel passionately about something.''

lets take this thread. I tell some ppl to ignore trolls etc. ronan thinks its dumb and thrashes it. I am still trying to reason with a few ppl like noodles, nicole etc. ronan come in and thrashes it. I start making jokes bcz i think its the only sane response and whole thing goes down from there.

I suppose the one person who i will apologize to is noodles who is a great guy and is concerned abt things. I like ILM and I didn't like this crap one bit. believe it or not I didn't.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 5 April 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

At this juncture I would post the lyrics to Monica Webster by The Delgados, but I don't know them. Instead, here are the lyrics to Flagpole Sitta by Harvey Danger:

From the album "Where Have All The Merrymakers Gone?"

i had visions, i was in them
i was looking into the mirror
to see a little bit clearer
rottenness and evil in me
fingertips have memories
mine can't forget the curves of your body
and when i feel a bit naughty
i run it up the flagpole and see who salutes
(but no one ever does)
i'm not sick but i'm not well
and i'm so hot cause i'm in hell
been around the world and found
that only stupid people are breeding
the cretins cloning and feeding
and i don't even own a tv
put me in the hospital for nerves
and then they had to commit me
you told them all i was crazy
they cut off my legs now i'm an amputee, god damn you
i'm not sick but i'm not well
and i'm so hot cause i'm in hell
i'm not sick but i'm not well
and it's a sin to live so well
i wanna publish zines
and rage against machines
i wanna pierce my tongue
it doesn't hurt, it feels fine
the trivial sublime
i'd like to turn off time
and kill my mind
you kill my mind
paranoia paranoia
everybody's coming to get me
just say you never met me
i'm going underground with the moles
hear the voices in my head
i swear to god it sounds like they're snoring
but if you're bored then you're boring
the agony and the irony, they're killing me
i'm not sick but i'm not well
and i'm so hot cause i'm in hell
i'm not sick but i'm not well
and it's a sin to live so well

Yes. I-uh-nee.

Here's a photo of the sleeve for Monica Webster:
