I just saw this on Top Of The Pops 2. And im like wtf??? Pseudo Echo - Funky Town.
It had everything that seemed to encapsulate the 80s. Slap bass, Wanky Guitar solo, synths. fucking awful.
So who is gonna admit to liking this?

Damien s, Wednesday, 13 August 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Then or now? Then, yes. Also lurved the original too, and that I still lurve.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Was this a really big hit in the 80s then? The keyboard bit sounds awfully familiar. Has someone sampled it?

Damien s, Wednesday, 13 August 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

lemme second mr. raggett's love for the first pseudo-echo record. it's a recent discovery of mine (thankee to Audio Paragon!) and it's a real lost synth-pop gem.

Tad (llamasfur), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Lips Inc. were from SAINT PAUL!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The original was the 2nd 45 I ever bought (1st: Blondie - "Call Me"). I used to spin the Psuedo Echo remake at high school dances, it was a fairly minor hit. I have no interest in ever hearing it again though. Still love the original.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Pseudo Echo had another hit though, didn't they?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

"Living in a Dream"

dave q, Wednesday, 13 August 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks, Dave.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

They had quite a few really. I've always been rather partial to "A Beat For You".

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

...and who could forget "My Personality's a Stranger to Me"? Almost everyone. That was their Numan track. And their first album was called "Autumnal Park". I am a repository of information about desperate early 80's synth pop bands. Anyone want to ask me about Real Life?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Send Me an Angel?

I used to love the Psuedo Echo cover when I was a little kid. You can get away with loving the cheese when you are about 7 years or so.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

They went heavy metal shortly after that. They had electric fans blowing their hair back on stage and everything.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

And suddenly I'm thinking of ... the Cutting Crew ... and also, somewhere in the back of my mind--[ouch!]--Europe?

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

ghastly. i do still like send me an angel. doees anyone remember when the machinations went fnky? the lead singer started wearing legwarmers. you had to stay up with the fashions if you were a 80's aussie synth band. stay up or disappear completely.

o, wait...

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i remember when Pseudo Echo were huge. i remember adoring their debut single "Listening". I wonder if i'd still like it if i was to hear it today..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Machinations! they RULED!!! sooooo underrated.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

did i mention how Machinations were underrated?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I really loved "A Beat For You" at the time of its release, but I wonder if I would now?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Dan's point is being grossly ignored here.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Although, World Domination Enterprises did the far superior cover.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i didn't get the significance of Dan's point

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

funkytown?

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 14 August 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

can we talk about Machinations now?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course you can Jim. The Australians are in the house. Shall we talk about 'Average Inadequacy' or 'Jumping the Gap' first?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 14 August 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh Average Inadequacy please. and Pressure Sway.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

pressure sway???? av in ok...but. colin! take sides!

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 14 August 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I am... oh damn it, this is hard for me to admit but I am a big fan of Pressure Sawy and their later funky stuff with the *choke* slap bass and the duck-haired new wave women in the clips. Gaz?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 14 August 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

learning to live with slap bass affection can be hard colin. but i know you've been through it (fck me, i had to hear it), and are workin those steps.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 14 August 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I am Colin and I am a slap bass player. I gave up slap bass in 1985 but I will always be a slap bass player. Becuase it's on record. And Gaz has the record.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 14 August 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

(tell me what the record is!)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

this is true (apart from the 85 bit...i'm guessing 89) you just have to look at him to know.

but back to the machinations.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 14 August 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

it seems odd to me that they've been all but forgotten now that the 80s is being revisited (with the Tales.. and Can't Stop It compilations) and it's not like they've been canonised..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Gaz, it was 1985 ya bastard. Tackhead with Gary Clail remember?

If you must blow my cover, tell Jim on private courriel. Jim, do you think it's time for an 80's comp of this stuiff? We should also have Idiom Flesh and Geisha then.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 14 August 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

absolutely! i wouldn't be surprised if somebody was working on it right now.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and of course we must have Deckchairs Overboard - 'Mixed Low' or 'That's the Way'.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 14 August 2003 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

nah i'd never blow yer cover. all i'll say jim is he's a fckn genius (or at least he was...)
i'm certain wimbish at that gig would have made anyone give up. was that 85? fck me i am old. i remember they asked everyone to evacuate their bowels before tackhead came on.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

gimme a clue! what label was he on!!

don't forget Dropbears and Dugites!!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay! And of course, of course, Kids in the Kitchen.

Gaz, I have numerous instruments of torture and am not afraid to use them on you if necessary.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

this compilation has SO gotta happen now. 80s Aussie synth pop represent!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

o man, no way am i buying this comp yer compiling. (how about moving pctures "what about me?")

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Now Jim, I reckon Gaz HAS most of these records at his work. Perhaps we might just be able to whip something up with his help.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

this may or may not be true. does phil need to be in on this...or are we out to make a quick buck offa suckas?

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

phil's input is urgent and key

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

but he'll just give them away!

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"what about me" can go on the unreleased second volume

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

thank god

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

incidently i quite like quasimodo's dream.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Phil's taste is too good. He definitely should not be involved.

Quasimodo's Dream is an Aussie classic of course.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

dave warners from the suburbs! suburban boy! (i realise this is 70's, but hey, synth pop!)

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm doing some research right now..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

a couple more: blancmange (i forget the song title) and flowers "walls"

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Non-Aussie acts? That becomes less embarassing. We want maximum embarassment. Or do we?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

are we doing a coverall comp, or individual ones for preslapbass and postslapbass?

blancmange came from the UK. flowers! heh heh, scene of my first vomit at gig scene.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

ok then no blancmange (why did i think they were aussie?)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

cos they were CRAP!

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

australian crawl "beautiful people"

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i wanna say "taxi mary" but it's just too good.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

if someone was ever going to seriously put this comp together, they would be fule if they didn't talk to jules normington i reckon

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

how about moving pctures "what about me?"

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH.

"What about ME? It isn't FAIR! I've had enough, now I WANT my SHARE!"

Jesus fuck. You die now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 August 2003 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

we used to imagine all the whiners crawling to their doors and screaming to the wind in unison when this came on countdown. you could hear the cries of "what about me?" all over town.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

mi sex : compu-pu-pu-pu pu-pu-pu-pu pu-pu-pu-pu-pu-computer games!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

wa wa nee and koo de tah are shoo-ins!

did jimmy & the boys have a synth? or have we gone beyond that?

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i think we need to stick to synths

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

'I Got You' - Split Enz

'No Word From China' - Pel Mel

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Wa Wa Nee / Koo De Tah - what the hell was going on with band names back then?

steve, Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

can't you see

i wanna live

but you just take more

you just take more

you just take more

than you give

what about me

dave q, Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

if Pel Mel is on there i wanna squeeze in Scattered Order's "escape via cessnock". fucking great, and all but forgotten in the recent reissue frenzy.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

No Jim! Scattered Order at TOO COOL.

Wa Wa Nee - 'Sugar Free' = better than Prince.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

welp we started with the Machinations so we've almost come full circle:)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

koo de tah was just a bad pun in a beatles stylee (coup d'etat)

wa wa nee was just befuddling

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh well, my suggestion on that one is we only include acts that sold out. So latter Machinations and James Freud Models only.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

James Freud Models only

ok. i was gonna suggest "i hear motion" so that fits

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Did anyone see that documentary that followed the life of Jedda, a thirteen year old Wa Wa Nee groupie?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

?!?!?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

no, but now i must

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight", Cutting Crew (Kevin Scott MacMichael) A Canadian with three names is usually trouble but he 'now plays in Pete Best's Beatle tribute band'! This starts off like one of those metal solos bolted onto soft-rock stuff of the era (cf Chicago "Stay the Night"), but just goes all twangy, like he's forgotten the rest of the notes in the scale, and then just kind of dies, perfectly encapsulating the stunted, diminished-expectations feel of Mr Mister-era pop. (Music for people who would be yuppies but didn't have any actual MONEY! ha ha) The sound is really nice but maybe that's the producer Terry Brown so maybe it's really Alex Lifeson. Is it? I'm sure I would've seen something somewhere if it were really he, but if it is and everybody knew this except me then it's humiliation city!' ) - myself, October 19, 2002, a 'guitar solo' thread

dave q, Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I just love the way an innocent enquiry int Pseudo Echo has turned into an excuse for 30something Australians to reminisce about Countdown. How did Ned hear about Moving Pictures?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

it was a pretty huge worldwide hit i think

hey i'm not 30 something! i r a pop cheese prodigy

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

did you tape that doco colin? was it on sbs?

i like colin's suggestion about the sell-out bit and i knew what about me was gonna be a dave q song!

and can i squeeze this in before another x-post?

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have the doco Jim, but I think it was SBS - and I remember the groupie's name, and some of the scenes from the doco, but that's all.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pretty sure Kevin Scott Macmichael passed away in the last year or so actually... he played in Robert Plant's band for a while, circa the "Fate of Nations" album.

Sorry for the lack of Wa wa nee related content in this post... ;-)

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 14 August 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Deborah Conway did vox for Sweet and Sour

i've not heard any radiators i don't think

How did Ned hear about Moving Pictures?

it was a pretty huge worldwide hit i think

That it was (hell, I heard it on top 40 radio in upstate New York...I heard it in a freakin' arcade!). And why am I not surprised that Dave Q, man of goodness, knows the song.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 August 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

My God - Jim, if you come to Sydney and go to a suburtban beer barn, NEVER admit you have not heard of The Radiators.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 14 August 2003 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Stop press - one of my work colleagues, who is lurking on this thread, courrieled my with this to say:

"a beat for you" is a fucking brilliant song. has anyone noticed the way the singer pronounces the word "desire" as "desoyahh"? its weird. and i've mentioned this before but most of my life i thought they were singing "theres a BEAST for you in my heart". i couldn't give a fuck about funky town though there were other good songs on that album eg listening.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Friday, 15 August 2003 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

re: icehouse - i'd vote for "hey little girl" or "crazy"

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 15 August 2003 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

(i never knew Icehouse had a song named after me)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 15 August 2003 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

the way the singer pronounces the word "desire" as "desoyahh"?

it's crazy bogan aussie pronunciation

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 15 August 2003 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Lady Lurex, this pronounciation was very common at the time among Australians and I think was an attempt to adopt a fashionably English new wave accent. Check also "Modern Girl" by James Freud (another compilation track there!) for a similar accent: "ooowhere does shay geow?" for "where does she go".

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 15 August 2003 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

misex vs pseudo echo? i pick coconut rough. best icehouse song is great southern land.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Friday, 15 August 2003 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

(re: pronunciation - i'm guilty of this sort of thing myself)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 15 August 2003 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

that is so cool. i hope my niece talks like that.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Friday, 15 August 2003 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, Great Southern Land is the best post Flowers Iva Davies track, but 'Take This Town' is the most _ridiculous_. And therefore it is better.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 15 August 2003 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: that Australian/New Wave English accent hybrid, Kids in the Kitchen (another superbly named band) did the same weird thing in Change in Mood. At the end of this track the singer sings the verse melody over the track as "la la la la" - but it comes out sounding like this: "law law law law law".

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 15 August 2003 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

god i love Change In Mood. what a song!!!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 15 August 2003 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Do we have to have The Eurogliders? I loath them like pestilence.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 15 August 2003 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, if you can come up with a track to replace them (and help me fill in the "?")

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 15 August 2003 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

who sang the one about the giant locust that ate sydney (or something?) and what was that early inxs tune: nigel or malcolm or something...

if its to be pure synth and its slap bassing descendants some others need to be weeded.

also colin "loathing like pestilence" is no reason not to put them on.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 15 August 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

OK - Electric Pandas - Big Girls

ALSO I STILL SAY "TAKE THIS TOWN" IS THE ICEHOUSE TRACK OF CHOICE.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 15 August 2003 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Fucking hell, this is the prize winner of the thread hijack contest.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 15 August 2003 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

As for Gaz's query about suburban beer barns - There's Selinas in Coogee, and ahem, Panther's somewhere out in P'matta I think (Blount can correct me if I'm wrong).

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 15 August 2003 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

ok "take this town" it is. and yes on the electric pandas

Jim, you're a champ and a very patient man.

Gaz, that was "The Cicada that Ate Five Dock (Eee! Eee! Eee! Eee)" by Outline. It's almost too cool for pop skool but if anyone can track it down I want a copy.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 15 August 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Donut Bitch, it may look like a thread hijack but if you're Australian and familiar with Pseudo Echo it's contiguous in the same way that talk of Boy George leads to talk of Steve Strange and his mates.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 15 August 2003 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

(inxs aren't synthy enough)

A case could be made for "To Look At You" from Shabooh Shoobah.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Friday, 15 August 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

it's neither of the two barns you mentioned colin. its out at ryde or somewhere. its scary. perfect for you me and tugboat to get beaten up at.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 15 August 2003 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club, West Ryde

Is that the one Gaz? It sounds pretty rough from the name alone.

Fact fans: did you know that one member of Pseudo Echo was called Pierre Pierre?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 15 August 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

oh god yes. his children (should he have any) must be SO proud

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 15 August 2003 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

And the singer was Brian Canham. Perhaps he's canning ham right now.

back on track!

gaz (gaz), Friday, 15 August 2003 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, the three Australians are taking it to 200. Just try and stop us America!! You can't! And why? Becuase you don't know what we're talking about and you don't care either.

Pace Andrew's suggestion: is INXS going on or not? And if so, which track?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 15 August 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't really remember the early stuff. i'm sure it was less rawk and more ooh-er nearly new wave. i don't really care though. give me wa wa nee.

Uh-oh, look who's here! Welcome, Mr Blount, to our little world.

I have to say, SPK's 'Breathless' was a really inspired choice. I love the way the chorus is tautological: "You leave me breathless / You take my breath away..."

we need a Dragon song. "Rain"?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 15 August 2003 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

"cry" by the Mavis's would belong if it wasn't from the late 90s

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 15 August 2003 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that the one where they were really fat? Sure.

OK, 201 posts for a thread named Pseudo Echo. I am going home with renewed faith in surrealism.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 15 August 2003 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Pseudo Echo are playing TONIGHT at the Mountain View Hotel in Glen Waverely. I almost feel compelled to go

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 15 August 2003 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I suggest your QED pick should be "Everywhere I Go", plus "Kabuki" for Geisha.

The Venetians' "So Much For Love" is also pretty synthy.

So is there any place in this thread for Indecent Obsession, or would that just be ridiculous?

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Friday, 15 August 2003 06:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I thought Icehouse's "The Icehouse" was their best one!!! (I think it was their first, it was pretty early on anyway- I remember hearing on the "Kid" Jensen show on Radio 1, for flips sake!!!)

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Friday, 15 August 2003 08:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my God - Nag Nag Nag is right on the money withg Geisha and The Venetians (Sound on Sound) - these have to go on. However Indecent Obsession is really pushing your luck, Voltaire boy. Old Fart is right about Icehouse being the best Icehouse song I reckon.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 15 August 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

speaking of which...when LRB incorporated slap bass and synth in the farnam years. i'm picturing the video: strobey, high detail (terminator style). i'm pretty sure you could see the sweat dripping from farnhams profile.

Boxcar !?!?
Hmmm... Maybe they were a different kettle of fish, and 1990s probably.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 15 August 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"Breathless" is a fantastic song and since I missed the portion of the thread where it was brought it I figured I'd just register the fact that if I wore panties and was prone to flinging them on stages, mentioning that song is guaranteed cause me to slip into an irreversible panty-flinging frenzy ending in a sprained arm and chilly nethers.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 15 August 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

wow! i must listen again.
i saw them a couple of times during this period and was saddened that they had become so...maninstream (the previous years sydney gigs had involved percussion played on breaking bottles and the swinging of large chains). but i was, indubitably, a dick at the time.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 15 August 2003 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Arrgh, this is now reminding me mostly of less synthy mid-80's stuff like I'm Talking ("Trust Me"), Sharon O'Neil (um...?), Shona Laing ("Glad I'm Not A Kennedy"), Noiseworks ("No Lies"), etc... And it's SCARING ME.

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Friday, 15 August 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Nag is right on it. But definitely no to The Allnighters. How about "Computer One" by (?) Naked Eyes?

I figure we end up with a massive list, mostly untraceable, and settle on the ones we can find.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 16 August 2003 05:40 (twenty-two years ago)

there was once this massive pile of ex-DJ vinyl for sale at a record store in town, and i reckon every single one on this list would have been there.

i thought of another!! "sex symbol" by flame fortune

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 16 August 2003 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Sweet Jesus! Flame Fortune!!!! AHAHAHAAAAA!!! Yes, yes, yes.

Let me jog your memory about Computer One:

"so tell pleeeease compu-ooter one:
Why did sheee-eee run?"

Which I nominate as possibly the worst truly prescient lyric ever written. Note the attempt, however clumsy, to show the limits to binary programming in solving the affairs of the heart.

My guess is that Computer One never did answer his question.

If I remember correctly, in the third verse, the singer comes to the realisation that he lost his girl because he was spending too much time with Computer One. Well, knock me down with a feather. We didn't see that one coming did we?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 16 August 2003 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I think "Computer One" was by Dear Enemy.

Absolute classic masterpiece. Of sorts.

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Saturday, 16 August 2003 05:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Dear Enemy. Yes. Thanks.

Who was Naked Eyes then? Were they an Aussie band?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 16 August 2003 05:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i do remember 'computer one' now!

never heard of naked eyes i don't think..

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 16 August 2003 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

and wot about Montevideo - "Cumma Cumma Wang Dang" (?) - were they Australian?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 16 August 2003 05:59 (twenty-two years ago)

are you kidding? were they?

ok colin: what was that big hit by the numbers again? (back to sanity, or a facsimile thereof)

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 16 August 2003 06:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The lights of the city/Come shining down on you
And suddenly you know/Your're not alone anymore
The lights of the city? The lights are calling (calling!)
And suddenly there's nothing there at all/ There's nothing there at all

re SPK: Breathless is grebt. But for the sake of completeness of discussion, I want to throw Metaldance on the table. Breathless or Metaldance?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 16 August 2003 06:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Scribble - Sunday Skool

or

Scribble - Stupid Girl?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 16 August 2003 06:08 (twenty-two years ago)

montevideo was indeed australian and i also own that 7" (!)

i haven't heard metaldance.. my SPK knowledge is tremendously limited..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 16 August 2003 06:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I think someone owes Jim a blow job for his tireless effort. Bags not me.

Jim, Metaldance must be heard. IT MUST BE HEARD.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 16 August 2003 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

its a box set!

definitely lights of the city if theres a synth anywhere on the record.

jim metaldance is grebt/crap.

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 16 August 2003 06:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd lay money colin had the hots for sharon o'neill too.

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 16 August 2003 06:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm, I suspect I'm completely ignorant about Scribble and Montevideo.

I just found that Expression song on a V/A comp alongside Dear Enemy, QED and Pseudo Echo. I'm struggling to grasp why the Expression dude explains that...

I always close my eyes to look into the sun
I always close my eyes the same as everyone

What's all that about then? Nice synths though.

Ooooh, "Taxi Mary" is on here too. ESOJ was quite right in proclaiming that a good'un!

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Saturday, 16 August 2003 06:16 (twenty-two years ago)

sharon o'neill was in the Numbers? the same Numbers as "government boy"??

jeez, someone's going to mention jane clifton and renee geyer any moment now. aw, fuck.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 16 August 2003 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I did have the hots for Sharon O'Neil. It was a toss up between her and Chrissie Amphlett as to who was the more quintessential King's Cross scrubber.

But avoid the 12" version. The 7" version is the one, it has all the ultra cheesy industrial lyrics: "Dying in the silver city/ Can't escape this life of lies / Come Synthesize your dreams away/ You want to do the metal dance?

Why sure, Sinan, I'd love to do the metaldance with you, thanks for asking. I'll just finish my drink first and have a quick slash, and see you on the floor in a couple of minutes.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 16 August 2003 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Taxi Mary is a baffling, bizarre, weird and utterly irresistable tune. even Joe C himself said he never knew where that song came from.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 16 August 2003 06:18 (twenty-two years ago)

It came from the bald patch on his head.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 16 August 2003 06:21 (twenty-two years ago)

so didja colin? do the meatldance with sinan? i met her once. her best mate crushed on me.

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 16 August 2003 06:24 (twenty-two years ago)

no jim, she wasn't in the numbers.

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 16 August 2003 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

oh ok

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 16 August 2003 06:29 (twenty-two years ago)

No, Gaz, I never got the chance to the the Metaldance with Sinan. She did however make me a cup of tea when I visited her and Graeme one day. They were charming - inviting me into their house just because I was a fan really. They had two gorgeous kids.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 16 August 2003 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Graeme's the man in gothic Hollywood soundtracks these days of course. The Craft - my fave teen movie after Bring It On. Great soundtrack.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 16 August 2003 06:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Question: How did Pseudo Echo come up with their name (and what a brilliant name it is)?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 16 August 2003 06:38 (twenty-two years ago)

FM: The name Pseudo Echo, how did you come up with it?

BC: It comes from a user manual to a classic analogue keyboard that we sometimes use, Pseudo Echo is the name of an 'example sound'.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 16 August 2003 06:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Too dire to be mentioned period.

I saw the video for PE's "Listening" just last night. They played a Mi-Sex video a few minutes later - not "Computer Games" though.

Seems so, but mostly on V/A cassettes, as I was a cassette-buying idiot-boy in the '80's.

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Sunday, 17 August 2003 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 07:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The Sinan one - much later though, around the Byzantine Flowers period. Someone yelled, 'Get the angle grinder out!'. I missed the one where the girl lost an ear, the one where Graeme lost a thumb, and the one where an audience member was set alight. What about you?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 07:10 (twenty-two years ago)

taxi mary

quasimodos dream (or love will find a way!)

pathetic. pah! can nag digitise the 80's tapes?

gaz (gaz), Monday, 25 August 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, Gaz, I've not been much help in this search and with good reason. I never owned Metaldance - I used to tape everything off the radio. But Justin Pelican had the Metaldance 12" - it's not the one to get, as it doesn't have all the vocals. It's the 7" you need. And it must be as rare as anything by now. Is it worth putting out a clarion call on ILM? Someone must have it, it sold really well in Europe.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 25 August 2003 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

livvy's physical is making me think: were there any aussie disco records? (don't mention JPY)

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

there must have been

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

oooh, there were! 'Goosebumps' by er, ??? someone. Help? Christy someone???

And also Olivia Newton-John. And let's not forget the BeeGees.

Another title suggestion for our compilation: "Burning With Desire: Lame Electropop from Australasia, 1980-89." Hey, that sounds like an article in one of those musicology journals no-one reads.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 3 September 2003 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

does anyone remember the ripsnorter or ripper comps? one had a close up of a wild pigs snout, the other a tight pair of denim shorts tearing across a pert bum.
these are my basic leap off ideas re covers.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 3 September 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

also did we get an uncanny x-men song?

Re Uncanny X-Men and synths, I think, from memory, that Geisha were, in effect, Uncanny X-Men with synths, and are really the band for Pig's Arse.

Happy reading Trayce. Hopefully you can help on our mission too. I am always happy when this thread bobs up, like a cork, on the top of ILM. I will miss it when it dies. Who knows? It may never die.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 3 September 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Most of the bands/songs Id've mentioned have already been covered anyway. Like Bring Phillip, who I have the clip for "Comfort" by on a tape somewhere. I think. Oh man, I'm having bad flashbacks about buying Uncanny XMen singles and being in the *coff mumble* Geisha fan club *runs and hides in shame*

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 3 September 2003 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

brian would be proud

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 3 September 2003 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Phwor the photo upthread of Brian in the PVC top is HOTTT.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 3 September 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW I'll third the VItabeats - do you remember their second bomb of a single "Audrey Hepburn"? :D Terrible.

A while back, I found this gatefold ten-single set of all the Dropbears singles, and wanted to buy it. I'm kicking myself that I never did. They were great, "Funloving" is a cool song and just recently I was toying with the idea of doing a fucked up dubby techno cover of it. I'm not kidding.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 3 September 2003 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

yay trayce!
the big question is : have you got any of this stuff?

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 3 September 2003 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I have TONS of it on video clips from Sounds and Beatbox. Apart from that.. umm... I mean I can fill in some gaps of songs by some of the bands listed, if that hasnt already been done? Was anyone after song titles?

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 3 September 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Mind you I must still have some Geisha somewhere surely. I bet mum has some of my old tapes.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 3 September 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Random crappy triv: did anyone else know that Geisha's singer is the guy who sings that hideous "Its more than a game" song on the footy show? :D

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 3 September 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps now would be a good time to list the ones we have, and the ones we don't have, but would like. Incredibly, I have none of these songs. I remember them all from Countdown and radio.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 3 September 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll make a list of everything i've got when i get home (and hopefully gaz' cdr will be there)

I'm impressed. I always thought I'd imagined bands like Geisha and the Dropbears, as no one else ever seems to remember them (well except you Jim - you're like a walking musical encyclopedia :P). I love youse guys.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 3 September 2003 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

My best friend had an Uncanny XMen single and all I remember about it now was it had a b-side called "I'm the best looking guy in the factory"

Heh!

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 3 September 2003 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

firstly - you cannot involve kylie minogue without involving jason donovan. secondly, if you decide to call it "burning with desire" i am going to insist on desire being spelled "dezoyah".

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 3 September 2003 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I've only skimmed the first part of the thread so apologies if I'm repeating anyone here, but thinking about the whole Brian Canham singing "desiiiyuhhh" thing made me think how amused I always was that his singing voice is this booming lovely gothy tenor, but has anyone else ever heard the guy speak? Squeaky ocker Broady boy accent, that one, its rather hilarious.

I still have interviews with Pseudo and Geisha from TV from the 80s, I found them the other day and my boyfriend shrieked "OH MY GOD LOOK AT THEIR HAIR!" (he's only 20, bless 'im).

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 3 September 2003 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 September 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

He's a darling. And whats more, he is more than happy to let me corrupt educate him on all my music, and as a result he loves the Cocteau Twins, so I think I've done my job =)

Anyway, back to the tacky pop music.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 4 September 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

(would mp3ing an audio source from an old video recording be worth bothering with, or would the sound quality be too shit?)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 4 September 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

might be a bit shit - but if it's the only way we can get the said track it might be worth it...

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 4 September 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I would love to help...but i can't! i'm in dubbo, with no records at all!
Did anyone like Kids in the Kitchen?

maree (maree), Thursday, 4 September 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I'll hook up the laptop to my VCR on the weekend and see what I can come up with. Unfortunately the old (read: 1985ish) vids are in mono, but among other things I had a special I taped that showed all of the Dropbears clips (there were at least 4 or 5 of them?). Maybe I should try to vidcapture those somehow. Plus a Geisha and a Pseudo Echo interview, some Radiators ("Lifes a Gamble"), Bring Philip's "Comfort" might be around somewhere (possibly) and um.. what was it called... who sang "I Want to be Jim Morrison"? I might have that somewhere also. Some sydney band with a violinist, they were sort of like a clunky goth version of the Dirty 3, anyone know who I mean?

xp: yep I remember Kids in the Kitchen maree :)

Hey I just remembered another band - Boom Crash Opera! HANDS UP! IN THE AIR! Naaa na na naa na naaa...

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 4 September 2003 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 4 September 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah neither of those! Hrm.. *googles* wow I can't find a thing. They had 2 singles I remember - "You Can't Make me Burn" and "I want to be Jim Morrison", they were a sort of almost folksy-goth artrock group. From Sydney AFAIK.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 4 September 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

isn't Jim Morrison by the Stems or something? don't remember the violin.

i don't think they were shit *enough* trayce. unless they sold out and got a keyboard player and *whoooosh* hair.

when i try to describe the sound of pseudo echoes ilk i kinda make semi fluent hippie/martial arts shapes with my hands in sweeping gestures in front of my face

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 4 September 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

CHeesy 80s synthrock is the new goth! (I wish!)

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 5 September 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i haven't been to a goth club in recent memory! i mean more like jim kerr circa big gold dream. sometimes i even do the *feet wide apart AND crouch'n'sway* to emphasise my point.

i thought you were a goth trayce!

gaz (gaz), Friday, 5 September 2003 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Errr... not that I'd know, or anything.

Shut up, Jim.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 5 September 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, no offence intended. (hey everyone: we have a recovering slap bass player and a goth in the house)

i love those snippets of dialogue on dogs in space jim. esp the one that goes "hey prickface...are you from planet pooftah, or the planet stupider?"

gaz (gaz), Friday, 5 September 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

No offence taken gaz =) "Once a goth, always a goth" as a mate used to say, even though today I am bedecked in tartan miniskirt and Pixies tshirt...

Anyone for, errmm. ... Big Pig?

mentalist (mentalist), Friday, 5 September 2003 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Big Pig? Were they the band with just tribal drums and an extremely cute singer? (not that, ah, um...I'm drunk! hahahhaha)

And Trayce there's nothing to be emabrrassed about being a goth.

maree (maree), Friday, 5 September 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Maree! i'm drunk too. its friday night. what better to do than check the pseudo echo thread? i remember that cute singer...what then did she do? she was about 14 or something, no?

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 5 September 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

They weren't wearing the aprons though :(

many thanx to gaz for his exceptional contribution

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 7 September 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

thats quite a list jim. i feel queasy.

what happened to Nag! and when is Trayce appearing to save the day?

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 7 September 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Unless my memory fails me on this one, I have reason to believe the 808 drum machine I own was once owned by The Widowed Isis, or an ex-member thereof. They sold it to me(for $150, haha!) when they got a real drummer.

Fun fact: their manager offered to manage my band even though he hadn't heard any of our music. I reckon he was after some kind of tax write-off situation. That would've worked with us.

However, they're not too synthy are they? Now The Primitive Calculators were FANTASTIC, nice work Jim & Gaz. No Christie Allen 'Goosebumps' then? No Monitors? Never mind, it's already a total corker of a dodgy compilation, good and bad mixed together with gay abandon, the way it should be.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 8 September 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

we really do need the Monitors track, if anyone can find it!! once we get that one it's compiling time

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 September 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

at the time of compiling do we all vote what gets on and what doesn't?

gaz (gaz), Monday, 8 September 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

yes

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 September 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

well, as we're all agreed (are we?) that the monitors are a must...can we start the polls now?

gaz (gaz), Monday, 8 September 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

ok. my *absolutely essentials* are:

koo de tah / qed / the dugites / kids in the kitchen / machinations / jo jo zep / flame fortune

i assume the big hitters (mi sex/real life/pseudo echo etc) would be a given?

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 September 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Big Pig even got a writeup in AMG, how nice of them.

mentalist (mentalist), Monday, 8 September 2003 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm with you but for the jo jo zep (is there a synth on there?).

my further essential nominations are: real life, freuds moden girl and wa wa nee.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 8 September 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

is there a synth on there?

yep, it's there (a bit more obvious at the start) but yeah it's more of a horns-driven tune than the others..

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 September 2003 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

my further essential nominations are: real life, freuds moden girl and wa wa nee.

Yes yes yes.

May it be worth saying that there is not necessarily a hurry to rush to the compilation phase? Or do you disagree?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 8 September 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

no hurry. i figure laser should not hit dye til this thread reaches 1000

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 September 2003 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, but as the suggestions have run dry i think we should argue up to 1000.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 8 September 2003 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, things should get extremely heated. Various accusations should be made, retracted, then made again with certain caveats and footnotes.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 8 September 2003 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

who will write the liner notes?

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 September 2003 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The footnotes could quite possibly be synthesized from parts of this thread.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 8 September 2003 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

hehehe. for example:

4) The Monitors - Singing In The 80's

this thread is our own little fantasy island innit?

gaz (gaz), Monday, 8 September 2003 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Australia is our own little fantasy island, my friends. Things of immense local significance happen hear, exploding like an atom bomb in the midst of Australian culture, and the rest of the world doesn't even feel a slight breeze or change of temperature.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 8 September 2003 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i like that story of some famous aussie painter who saw the works of some overseas painter and was highly impressed, so he decided to copy them. trouble was he'd only seen reproductions in books/magazines so he was unaware the paint was fucking thick as shit, put on with a trowel like.

i'd like to extend this analogy to our synth pop.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I call it the platypus effect. Overseas trends gradually find their way to Australia, where they evolve to fit the local ecosystem and terrain. Each local attempt to ground an overseas music trend becomes an isolated, artificial echo - a pseudo echo - of the real thing abroad.

However, that's just the start. Becoming increasingly more finely attuned to the requirements of this great land, they become more and more bizarre and utterly unworkable in any other country. In the end, they are of interest to outsiders after all, but as freaks, as tourist attractions for people who like to view bizarre objects. "Look Harvey! A platypus!" "That's nothing honey, come over here and take a look at these Severed Heads".

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

of course the internet is killing off this phenomena

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

*stunned*

gaz (gaz), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

there should be guided tours of tex perkins' musical past

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

*wakes up* a hoy hoy!

Jims list is pretty impressive. I could have contributed Geisha, but have had no luck finding anything in my collection.

I could still do vidcaps, but I have to work out *how* first of all (not sure if this pc would do them). I mean oh! the hair on those geisha boys back in yon 80s, on Sounds Unlimited...

a pseudo echo - of the real thing abroad.
Niiiiiice! Brought the thread title around neatly to what the thread became ;)

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you Trayce. My great regret about this thread is that there are too few pictures of these pre-internet, relatively obscure acts. The hair, certainly, but also the dungarees worn over bare chests.

Speaking of local tourist attractions, who remembers The Gondawanaland Project? Every track of theirs sounded like an ad for an Aussie tourist location. Didgeridoo, kitschy cheese keyboard harmonies, cheap drum machines and congas!

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

but also the dungarees worn over bare chests.

i can tell you now: googling for pictures of Big Pig is disturbing and a waste of time

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

we have the gondwanaland rec! ha, colin were you in WKOSA when they had the didg?

gaz (gaz), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

also, a new suggestion: ross wilson: living in the land of oz

gaz (gaz), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes Gaz, and I saw them once at the Hopetoun. And I have a depressing professional story too, but I always do, don't I?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I am so glad I kept my old VHSs from 1985. Must capture asap. I believe I have: Geisha and PS interviews, and vid clips by PS, the Venetians, Kids in the Kitchen (possibly a coutdown live versh of something dreadful), the Radiators (the "Lifes a Gamble" clip, which is quite good), and I dearly hope I still have my Dropbears clips.

Its a fucking shame this is all on mono VHS tho and not on audio also. Ahwell.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

colin: eh? you have? were you in the band when i mixed the whole sound check through the foldback speakers and then the guy who ran the night at the TU came up and switched on the p.a? lucky i was st*ned.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

No, Gaz, it's actually one of my many 'rejected remix' stories.

A coupla Venetians tracks were mentioned: 'So Much for Love' and 'Sound on Sound'. I'm happy with either if we can get one, but my vote goes to 'Sound on Sound' if it can be found on found.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

tell!

gaz (gaz), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

They, er, rejected a remix. And it was a pretty bad remix too, so fair play.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, what could you do with their stuff anyway? I felt the inspiration drain from me as I worked.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I just say that the fact y'all took this thing over 500 posts while I was distracted is deeply inspiring and a source of great solace in troubled times.

I'm sure I can offer Geisha (I seem to have inherited the LP) and Vitabeats (from cassette) if they are still elusive...

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

yes please!

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I realised I have an SPK album, how daft of me. I have "Machine Age Voodo" - never even listened to it, so I'd assume it is in decent nick. Does it fit in with what we're looking at here?

Also, found two shitty 80s compliations, WAHEY! On "1982 out of the blue" we have ... erm, actually I'm not sure if any of it is relevant. Is "Who listens to the radio" by the Members an aussie thing? And its more pubrock, innit? Also got 1982 with a Bullet which has the Church, "What about me" by Moving Pictures, "Beserl Warriors" by Mental as Anything and that godawful "Body and Soul" by Jo Kennedy - the rest is afaik not aussie stuff.

Lordy these are dreadful compilations heh. Theyre also very scratched sadly :( The vinyl gods will have their way with me bigtime when the day of judgement comes, let me tell you.

Oh I also have "Glory for the shit for brains" by No - does that count, or too arty/industrial?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 8 September 2003 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Trayce: machine age voodoo has metaldance on it! it is U & K!

I am listening to "bullant" by gondwanaland now...it might fit!

gaz (gaz), Monday, 8 September 2003 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Who listens to the radio" by the Members an aussie thing?

wasn't this sports? who ARE aussie.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 8 September 2003 04:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey guys... has anyone mentioned Do Re Mi yet? "Man Overboard"?

How the HELL did I forget that one... *shakes head sadly*

xpost: excellent gaz, I'll get right on it :) As soon as I can get the turntable hooked into the older pc. Have to do some shuffling of equipment once the lad gets back home from work.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 8 September 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, well this song is just listed as "Radio" by some band called Members, must be somethign else.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 8 September 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Gaz wrote:
Trayce: machine age voodoo has metaldance on it! it is U & K!

Yes, but a much weedier version. Which is probably a good thing. Check out also 'Crimes of Passion' and, best of all 'Junk Funk'.

The Members' 'Radio' is an English song which became an Aust hit. It's grebt! It also includes the immortal line:

I know what I like
So you can all go ride a bike!

There's another CD-R in this... UK songs that were a hit in Australia, but not the UK.

Underworld - Underneath the Radar
The Bureau - Only For Sheep

...but I digress.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 8 September 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Underneath the Radar wasnt a hit in the UK? Blimey. I remember dancing to that at my year 12 formal...

erm, not to also digress or anything. I really should go eat some lunch.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 8 September 2003 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

underneath the radar was a hit nowhere but here. its other claim to fame was its single-shot video

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 September 2003 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 September 2003 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps 'having lunch' is just Tracye's euphemism for dropping the kids off at the pool/hanging a cable.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 8 September 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

if so its a pretty nasty euphemism. although colins suggestions are worth bearing in mind as possible titles for vol.2...

gaz (gaz), Monday, 8 September 2003 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn it Gaz, you made me splutter into my hot tea.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 8 September 2003 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

... or hanging the kids?

Actually Jim I got up really early (6am!)

I then had a cup of coffee that I proceeded to throw up half an hour later. Which is why Im home today, and why lunch was a long time coming (I just ate and now I feel ill again urgh).

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 8 September 2003 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

There you. Far from hanging a cable, she was merely throwing a few muses.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 8 September 2003 05:28 (twenty-two years ago)

And speaking of muses, here's some more fine pictures of our heroes. Note the change of image from New Romantics to Numanites to 80's rockers.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

must have been Rocks On. what was their hit called?

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Einstein A-Go-Go. You will not be disappointed by this hilariously of-its-time track. I reckon Thomas Dolby must've heard it, for sure:

Wow, though, there's a least a few tracks on that that are in the synthpop area, right?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 19 September 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i count 6 we'd consider. and thats including eurogliders who you hate with a passion colin.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 19 September 2003 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

aaah, I'm in no position to bargain Gaz, having done none of the work. So it's really yours and Jim's call on that one.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 19 September 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow.

I was just reading through this list (because I've become incredibly curious about synth-pop *not* from the UK) and hurrah for Di mentioning the glorious "Sierra Leone" by Coconut Rough! OMG, I adore this song now. I, um, dl'ed a .wma of it and converted it to .mp3, so now I can say I have an mp3 of it, which I will play again and again and again. Celebrate!

Plus I quite like Landscape's "Einstein A-Go-Go", probably mostly because it is hilarious and fun and light and a great pop memory. And OMG, colin s barrow is totally OTM about the whole obvious connection between this track and what Thomas Dolby built his career on.

I'll have to take notes on and investigate further a lot of what this thread mentions. Ooh, "new to me" '80s stuff... yay!

(p.s.: The Mavis's did perhaps one of the BEST Duran covers I've EVER heard, "Planet Earth", for the Aussie Duran tribute CD. Just call me an uberfan, thanks.)

Just Deanna (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 19 September 2003 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

welcome to our world dee. please stick around.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 19 September 2003 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Do we have Sierra Leone then, Gaz n Jim? I haven't heard this one.

Dee, we're putting your name on the list for the CD-R then?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 19 September 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't have that one, no. i keep intending to pop down to collectors corner and go through their seven inchers but it hasn't happened yet

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 September 2003 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe Dee can help out? Dee?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 19 September 2003 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know that song! (actually i don't remember half of them. i think the "if you remember newcastle in thee early 80's, you weren't there thing applies")

gaz (gaz), Friday, 19 September 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Gaz, aw, thank you. I will.

Colin, OMG, that would be a HUGELY wonderful thing! Thanks tons!

Guys, I do have to (once again) thank Di for "Sierra Leone". She put it onto a mixtape for me and I latched onto that sucker the instant I heard it, so please pardon me while I drop to my knees and shout many thank yous in the general direction of New Zealand.

And... where should I send the mp3?

Just Deanna (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 19 September 2003 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

New Zealand? NEW ZEALAND? What have they got to do with anything? Listen Dee, anything worthwhile from New Zealand is automatically Australian. I think there may even be legislation to that effect.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 19 September 2003 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

so were coconut rough from dunedin then?

jim is the man to send the tune to dee.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 19 September 2003 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

WOW! I can't add anyhting but if I could get ahold of a copy of all this music I woudl be happy as LALALALALA... well, here's a suggestion. INXS w/all synths no geetars- It's a song on the INXSive comp.- instrumental version of "stay young" - "Lacovocal" I think its called- its really cool and synthy.

sucka (sucka), Friday, 19 September 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Slightly tangential to the topic, but have you lot heard this CD of covers of early Aust new wave and technopop by local electronic producers? It's an odd record, patchy but interesting:

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe I've been arguing about the future of American dance music culture on other threads when I could've been on this wonderful thread talking about useless early 80's Australian technopop. I couldn't givbe a toss about American dance culture! What was I thinking??

gaz (gaz), Monday, 10 November 2003 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, Kate was impressive wasn't she?

And who was it who pointed out the Polynesian influence on 'Throw Your Arms Around Me'? Was it Kat or Christine Anu? That was well spotted.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 10 November 2003 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Three little boys had one little thread

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

*cries*

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

all i still have to do is a couple of my own vinyl transfers (which by all rights should take half an hour at the most) and then sequence it

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

--even ned doesn't come round no more--

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

It was funny at first, but then it just became silly and annoying.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

they were showing countdown episodes from '85 and '86 on rage this saturday. i saw no less than four of the above songs played. brian mannix has a very irritating vocal tic

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i fucking hate brian mannix

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i know, i'm a terrible procrastinator :(

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

koo de tah played live in the studio

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, damn. I live for nights on Rage where they play this stuff.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

koo de tah played live?

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)

and just as the three little boys get going, i get going home. bye.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"live"

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah yes... "And now, 'live' in the Countdown studios...". I loved watching bands try to deal with fade-outs. And Phil Oakey, openly laughing while his voice 'sang' behind him, that was unforgettable...

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

-even ned doesn't come round no more--

I'm waiting for you bums to actually make this collection, dammit!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 06:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't believe it!

i was just feeling really really shitty about something and i got an email from someone who's ON MY SIDE in the shittyness matter. AND seconds later...NED!!!!!

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 08:31 (twenty-one years ago)

hey i was just dancing to "a beat for you" with anton

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

See, Gaz, we're here for you. And best of all, Ms Lurex unleashed her dancing powers!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

:)

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

mono was unimpressed apparently

http://mono.net/discussion_sub.asp?f=14440

oh well. i was in a stroe that sold actual non-indie music and i saw one of colin's albums for sale. it made me happy.

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 12 January 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

hey did you change yer name on mono mr surface?, cos you never seem to be there anymore.

is it because colin got called a dickhead, or cos they have begun nicking ILxor threads? (did you see the "dear random person i live you one?)

did you buy colin's disc? was it good? are you getting excited about whitehouse?

all these questions.

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i've all but entirely left mono, there was weirdness afoot that i wanted to avoid. i think the porting threads there thing is quite a good idea really..

i didn't buy col's disc. it were $33. i ended up just spending the money on beer.

v excited about whitehouse but not at all excited about merzbow (for it is they that bennett & co are supporting)

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i never really got into mono. dunno why. you were the only good thing on it. and circuit freak, natch.

i am actually more excited about fushitsusha.

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Waaah! Buy my discs! Mono's OK, you get called a dickhead from time to time, that's part of the deal with forums.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i've bought your discs before colin. funnily enough no one wants to buy them off me.

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I am still waiting for this eventual CDR box set of the gods or whatever.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

everything in that particular store was wayyyy overpriced

xpost ned it's happening, honest!!

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

we are waiting for trayce to provide audio grabs to interpolate.

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll have you know, mullygrubber gaz, that surface noise/jim has drawn my attention to the fact that one of my 12"'s sells for $220 second hand. But only in Perth, where rave never died.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

surface noise, do you want me to burn you the disc for nothing? It's the least I can do after your selfless efforts.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

we are waiting for trayce to provide audio grabs to interpolate.

Woo!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah!

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

actually i would never sell my collection of you colin. that pel**** dau**** disc is SOOO fucking great.

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Aww thanks. You're showing your age. New one possibly coming out soon.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd love one col' :)

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, email me, tell me which one it is.

Err, Trayce is doing something then? What about Di?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

New one possibly coming out soon

does it have slap bass?

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

No, but I can slap your face if you like?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

go to hell.

Justin Leach, Monday, 12 January 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck off back to mono

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 12 January 2004 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

o no. now they will be everywhere, the barbarian hoards, streaming through colins link and making jokes about jet...

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 12 January 2004 04:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to apologise in advance. To everyone.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 12 January 2004 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I have opened a portal in the cyberspace fabric and now things can never be the same.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 12 January 2004 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

he has unleashed the apocalypse and he is saying sorry.

quick, call blount.

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 12 January 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I fear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 12 January 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

No, no, don't call Blount! I *sob* beg of you, don't *sob* call Blount.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 12 January 2004 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

*appears from nowhere on a cloud of pure silver loveliness*

hiya! who's blount?

maree (maree), Monday, 12 January 2004 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

He's the man who calls me out on factual errors.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 12 January 2004 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

plus he hates australians

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 12 January 2004 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i just thought he would be the man for the job. send those mono-ers back. fix the portal. wash his hands.

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 12 January 2004 04:59 (twenty-one years ago)

blount, I'm not Australian. I'm English. Oh hang on, that makes things worse.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 12 January 2004 04:59 (twenty-one years ago)

What we need is an html savvy portal-patcher. And then, of course, I will be court martialled.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 12 January 2004 05:02 (twenty-one years ago)

huh? someone said my name?

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 12 January 2004 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

we were wondering if you had anything to contribute to the Pigs Arse CD

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 12 January 2004 05:59 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah. even though you are in nz. we will claim you.

so far: jim is doing all the work. trayce is getting interview material from old countdowns . ned is offering moral support. i have sent a somewhat useless cdr to jim. colin is providing a "mystery track". and i believe dee offered an mp3?

it is a glorious project. i like to get drunk and just think about it.

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 12 January 2004 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

useless my ass. your contributions are very much an integral cog

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 12 January 2004 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

my wind.

i don't actually like a lot of this music, i'm just here cos i like you guys

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 12 January 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm providing a mystery track?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 12 January 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

you already have

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 12 January 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh-oh.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 12 January 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

gaz? What have you given him ya b******d?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 12 January 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

bahahahaha

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 12 January 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I kill you both with guns, OK?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 12 January 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

look, i gave him something a little like yourself, ok? something probably named for the basic elements of your character. i am keeping the other stuff for blackmail.

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I a sweet kind of guy? A light kind of guy?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

that's you! just like a Lush song

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank God. I thought it was going to be a slap bass track.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 04:30 (twenty-one years ago)

haha...but that would've been perfect, no?

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 04:30 (twenty-one years ago)

That can be your blackmail stash.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 04:31 (twenty-one years ago)

anyway i have changed my mind. i think microhouse with slapbass is the future of electronic music.

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i know all those words but that sentence makes no sense

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Surely gaz you mean electronic heavy metal with slap bass?

Oh my god, I was just kidding, but now I think about it...

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

O MY PSEUDO ECHO THREAD!!!

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 04:39 (twenty-one years ago)

the latest jandek album is full of slap bass.

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 04:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Sample lyric from that album:

"Hey mister, is that a slapper in your bass?"

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

ah like to slap her hard, ah like to yank her strings

There's an 80's style slap funk covers band that do Jankek in the style of The Fatback Band. Tthey're called 'Jan 'n' Dex'. They have an album out called 'Ready for Da House'.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 04:47 (twenty-one years ago)

LOL!

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 04:49 (twenty-one years ago)

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you think there's a place for maybe a Jandek covers band that reinterprets the songs as glam 70's anthems? They could be called Spandek.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 05:01 (twenty-one years ago)

the possibilities are endless!

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 16 January 2004 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

mullygrubber (gaz), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be at home rehearsing and recording. Currently no computer at home. *cries like a lickle gurl*

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

no computer? you make techno for crimony's sake! please explain!?!

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

You bastard dingo-lovers have to get it together. Recording indeed. WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE, MUSICIANS? (That should be the title of the comp.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the scratched message in the dead wax of a Blueboy 7" said it best... "we're not musicians, we're a pop group"

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

he makes bangin techno though...none of this prissy glitchy poofta stuff.

mullygrubber (gaz), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

*sob*

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

jim are you gonna do a rough guide?

mullygrubber (gaz), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

to australian synthpop? or poofy glitch?

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

no computer? you make techno for crimony's sake! please explain!?!
-- the surface noise (electricsoun...) (webmail), January 16th, 2004. (electricsound)

Haha, my dear surface noise, how delightfully naive of you. It's a common misconception that techno is made with computers. This is rarely the case. Usually it's made with the oldest, cheapest, crummiest gear you can find, so that it will sound good. If you use a computer to make techno it ends up sounding like Ministry of Sound. We can't have that.

gaz, x-post.

One well known techno producer said to me when I was asking what kind of compression to get, 'Get the cheapest you can find - you don't need expensive gear for techno'.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha

so what are you recording onto though? 1" tape?

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

an original 1979 kmart walkman

mullygrubber (gaz), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

hardcore!

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

and australian synthpop jim!

mullygrubber (gaz), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

ok i will. i did a melbourne indiepop one too. i should do a severed heads rough guide while i'm at it

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Surfacew Noise, we techno boffins - the talented ones - go for the cheapest, not the oldest. 1" tape is retro, but expensive - therefore solely the preserve of indie retro fanatics. We go for the CHEAPEST. And what is that? Of course, you are right: a stand-alone domestic CD burner (AUS$500) and $1 CD-R's. Preferably borrowed from a friend.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

someone else already did the 'heads jim.

...have you heard that aberrant records comp (the two vinyl ones on one cd)?

mullygrubber (gaz), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i bought that just the other day, it's crackin'

xpost hangon colin you record straight to CDR?!?!

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh dan did a good job dinnee?! although i would have put "petrol" in there somewhere. and "canine".

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

surface, I have a DAT machine (this was from before commercially avail stand alone burners) - but I still record straight to CD-r sometimes, just because the discs are cheaper than DAT tape.

Those Aberrant comps - Wrong Kind of Stone Age have disowned the tracks they recorded for them. They were forced to do punk tracks by Bruce, but were well on their way into tribal dub territory by then. I didn't know them at that point, but I used to think Miriam was a bit of a looker. Crazy times...

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

haha.
you think you were crazy to think of miriam as a looker? i used to think her voice sounded like stevie nicks.

mullygrubber (gaz), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Well she is a looker. And she does kinda sound like Stevie Nicks. She may well read this thread. Hi, Miriam!

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 16 January 2004 04:01 (twenty-one years ago)

interesting.....

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 16 January 2004 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 16 February 2004 03:43 (twenty-one years ago)

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 16 February 2004 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

How about in rough order of release?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 16 February 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

are they mp3 discs or normal?

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 16 February 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

normal. mp3 discs are for weirdos

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 16 February 2004 04:01 (twenty-one years ago)

and you can't sequence, what, 20 songs?

list what you've chosen and we can argue over the sequence?

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 16 February 2004 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Track 1 must surely be 'Singing in the 80's'.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 16 February 2004 04:05 (twenty-one years ago)

ok when i get home i'll post the current list. and it's a double cd.

i'd feel priveleged to have witnessed a "special day", but i'm guessing thats 6 out of 7 colin...

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 16 February 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Jim, everything she says is a classic lyric. Check this out:

There are no words to describe what I do
And I won't work for free

That's what she wanted to put on a job application!

I have to follow her around with a pen and paper. She recently described a skater friend as a 'lord of the ramps'. That is now the title of our new song.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 16 February 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

ok i've converted all the MP3s and transferred gaz' cd and just have to do vinyl transfers for these ones if i can find 'em. i know where the KITK and flame fortune ones are and they're the most important. so that's 52 songs i've got. might have to cull a few.

the dugites - in your car
flash & the pan "ayla"
monte video and the cassettes - shoop shoop diddy wop
kids in the kitchen - change in mood
machinations - average inadequacy
jo jo zep - taxi mary
meo 245 - lady love
flame fortune - sex symbol

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 16 February 2004 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

you can ditch 99% of my cd jim! its marginal at best...lets stick to the classics!

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 16 February 2004 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

bump

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 16 February 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm just gonna start with a single-disc of the best ones

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 16 February 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

That's a good idea. Wot's the list?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 16 February 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

koo de tah - too young for promises
pseudo echo - listening
real life - send me an angel
qed - everywhere i go
the dugites - in your car
kids in the kitchen - change in mood
electric pandas - big girls
mental as anything - if you leave me can i come too
inxs - burn for you
james freud & the radio stars - modern girl
machinations - pressure sway
mi sex - computer games
models - out of mind out of sight
split enz - i see red
men at work - who can it be now
spk - breathless
wa wa nee - stimulation
icehouse - great southern land
radiators - gimme head
primitive calculators - pumping ugly muscle
divinyls - science fiction
dave warners from the suburbs - suburban boy
flame fortune - sex symbol
monitors - singing in the 80s
geisha - kabuki
electric pandas - big girls

i need to cull about 6 of these. help?

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 16 February 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

er shit elec pandas appears twice. ignore that

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 16 February 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

electric pandas - big girls
inxs - burn for you
mental as anything - if you leave me can i come too
models - out of mind out of sight
men at work - who can it be now
divinyls - science fiction
dave warners from the suburbs - suburban boy

Here's my suggestions for culling. Just suggestions mind. If we want a Models track, surely it has to be I Hear Motion? 'Out of Mind' blows so hard even the third little pig loses his house.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 16 February 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm i don't think i have i hear motion, will have to look for it

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 16 February 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

definitely fuck off who can it be now (sorry ned). actually i think colin's nailed it even though suburban boy is *sob* deeply personal to me.

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 16 February 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha! Fair enough. What do Trayce, Di and the others think? Are they around?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 16 February 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

like rissoles?

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 16 February 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll rip yer bloody arms off

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 16 February 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Why isnt Radiators "Lifes a Gamble" on there instead? I liked it :(

Anyway yeah dump the Men at Work song, we really dont need reminding they ever existed surely.

Also, having long forgotten the guts of this thread is there a reason why we picked a shite Models song and not one like "I hear Motion" or umm.. err.. something else old?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 16 February 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Fugg, I didnt see Cols comment suchlike, ne'er mind me.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 16 February 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Also ditto with INXS - I'd much rather "Just Keep Walking" was on the list than "Burn for You" but thats a personal view.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

(and if either that or the models early stuff be needed I *think* I can get it offa Barbara - youve met her maybe Jim, my friend Dom's wife, ver oldschool punx0r chick?)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Here here - if anything from INXS, Just Keep Walking is a great song.

But I don't think there's any need to look for too many new songs, there are plenty good ones already.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah that's the one gaz. ok no inxs

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i vote for i hear motion too then.

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi Ned. You are going to LOVE this CD.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

:-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

*cringes*

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

er, that was a cultural cringe

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Noted.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I was trying to think of another Models song even better than I Hear Motion and I 'member it now - No Shoulders, No Head. Dun have it though. GOod song but.

(Am I wrong in thinking the general theme of this thing was artyrock 80s or were we going more for a trashy feel? I'm confused haha).

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

the entirety of local and/or general is fantastic.

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Trayce is right (as usual). No shoulders No Head is a better song than I hear Motion. More bizarre, less slick (by the standards of the time) and more tribal.

I think a balance between the very bad and the very good is what we really want in our hearts right (in spite of what I was saying earlier in the thread about only going for the bad stuff - I've changed my mind about that). But it should all have at least a bit of a new wave/technopop feel in it somewhere, yes??

So no Venetians - Sound On Sound then? Can't have it all I suppose.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

got half of it off slsk before it was unshared

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

its minor tweeking though. jim has done a stirling job. (actually the only "good" song there is pumping ugly muscle, so maybe it should be chopped too?)

mullygrubber (gaz), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Well that one is a corker and I've never owned it. I say, bung it on.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

can't we have "a beat for you" instead of "listening" by pseudo echo? (though both are great)

most of the tracklisting i am unfamiliar with!!! what i know of is all good!

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i might be able to squeeze both on, since this is *their* thread after all..

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I sometimes wonder what Damien s thinks of what he started with that first post, all those months ago.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"thank god i turned email notifications off"

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I was amused in the "bands whos only hit was a cover" thread someone listed Pseudo Echo actually. The bloody nerve. I set 'em right straight, I did.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha Jim :D

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:04 (twenty-one years ago)

97 more posts before we hit the grand

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Coincidence: I caught The Bolshoi this morning on VH-1 Classic's delicious request hour and blurted out, "Christ, this is bad enough to be Pseudo Echo."

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:06 (twenty-one years ago)

But The Bolshoi are GREAT! Well, the first couple of albums anyway. Don't tell me you can't enjoy a heartfelt tale of wasp torture.

Muppet Boy, Tuesday, 17 February 2004 06:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't tell me you can't enjoy a heartfelt tale of wasp torture.

WTF? This begs telling....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I loved The Wasp Factory, but that was a book.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

The Bolshoi had a song on their Friends album called 'Waspy', which detailed the emotional childhood thrills (and ultimate remorse) of catching a wasp and watching it die.

It is pleasingly nuts.

Muppet Boy, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks to this thread I picked up the first Pseudo Echo album for a buck at the local record shop. Actually for 80's new wave it's not that bad, "A Beat For You" is quite catchy and I see how it could've been a big hit.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

success!

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

this thread is #34 in the yahoo search results, and i haven't yet found it in google. not good enough people!!

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 19 February 2004 07:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Jim, he said the Pseudo Echo album was 'not that bad'. I don't see him doing handstands, screaming with joy or baying at the moon.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 19 February 2004 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

he has no soul

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 19 February 2004 08:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Well then, maybe he would be advised to purchase some Marvin Gaye.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 19 February 2004 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Listening to Pseudo Echo >>>>> having a soul

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 19 February 2004 08:31 (twenty-one years ago)

You know what? I hope the compilation never does get made. It is more beautiful as an idea.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 23 February 2004 05:54 (twenty-one years ago)

dohhhh and i was getting so close!

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 23 February 2004 06:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, so close.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 23 February 2004 06:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i regret volunteering now

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 23 February 2004 06:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Myself, I'm a great shirker of such responsibilities. Did you see me volunteering for anything to do with this project? No. All I did was suggest other people do stuff. I think you could take a leaf out of my book, Jim.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 23 February 2004 06:51 (twenty-one years ago)

You have to complete it or I'll make fun.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 23 February 2004 07:05 (twenty-one years ago)

You'll 'make fun'? Haha, that is so American.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 23 February 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 23 February 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I also have a suggestion: "Let's buy Jim a drink".

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 February 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I once had a request for Pseudo Echo's "Funky Town" when DJ-ing at The Garage in Nottingham. It was one of the few times when I did the whole moody-DJ staring-in-silence poker-faced attitude thing.

I probably put The Cookie Crew on next.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 26 February 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Pseudo Echo was a HUGE influence on my musical style. Check out our band, Raya. We pretty much fucking rule.

Unbelievable! So many great vinyl memories. Seems like every Australian song I want and don't have is on this list. Anyone know if it's possible to get Machinations (prefer Average Inadequacy), Deckchairs Overboard (that's the way), and most of those other songs on CD or digitally?

PS. Wish I still had that old Phantom release "Paths of Pain to Jewels of Glory"

Pseudo Echo is on my want list. No way will I ever find any of the other stuff not to be found in the US. Is there any possibility of getting a copy of this collection for a few bucks? Wow!!!

what's with the Tazos though?

kit brash (kit brash), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i just had them on my desk and i popped some into every envelope for the hell of it. one of those things...

its a miracle

bulbs (bulbs), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i am waving my hands in the air and smiling. people are looking at me strangely.

bulbs (bulbs), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I can't imagine you smiling either.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

the 80's were SO much better than the 90's or now weren't they?

bulbs (bulbs), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I always said so - but only 1980-1983. After that, bleeuuurgh! Until acid house in 1988 YAY

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, thats right. actually real house and techno were good too.

bulbs (bulbs), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, and things were GRATE until 1993, cos black metal was really happening too, until intelligent techno (ha!) killed all that, and Varg killed Euronymous and ended up in jail and that was the end of that, the silly git.

Since 1994 remained consistently shit until 1999 which was YAY electroclash and then Duh bored with this by 2001. Things have been shit again since 2001 except for Tatu's first single.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

intelligent techno killed black metal? yes, thats right in fact i think.

bulbs (bulbs), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd put the boring setting in around 95 and i wouldn't vote electroclash - however the early mashup/boot scene was a glimmer of interest.

bulbs (bulbs), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i wonder why no one is disagreeing?

bulbs (bulbs), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Mashups were not interesting, people just pretended it was to relieve the boredom. Electroclash was interesting for about 5 seconds but people were trying too hard to pretend it wasn't cos they were afraid of all the perverse sex. yet strangely attracted. and this created slef-hatred in their jealous little hearts , which they projected out.

and yes, intelligent techno did kill black metal - it was Aphex's fault for imitating Varg's crap synth instrumentals.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I can only assume no-one's disagreeing because they are really not interested in our opinions in the first place. Which is a little surprising.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

electroclash (almost) got me back into dance music

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I just enjoyed going to clubs and laughing at the lyrics again! I hadn't done that since Spandau Ballet rocked my tiny world with 'To Cut A Long Story Short'. And oh, the fun of dancing all stiff and po-faced like a European wanker! Too much fun, almost a sin.

Perhaps we need a new thread: 'Did Intelligent Techno Kill Black Metal?'. Hahaha, I'm too busy to go stirring today.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

but that was BECAUSE of the perverse sex jim!

bulbs (bulbs), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

haha of course! were it not for chicks on speed i would never have discovered cunnilingus

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

And if it were not for Avenue D's 'Do I Look Like A Slut', I would not have realised how nice it is to meet girls who look like a slut.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

un-huh

bulbs (bulbs), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

and don't get me started on debasser's "fat girls"

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

*News flash for those who have just joined us - the excellent electric sound of jim has compiled all the classic early 80's Australian synth pop hits on to the one CD, a 20 track monster called 'Pig's Arse'. it has just been sent out to the lucky first recipients - reactions are still flooding in. In the meantime, several bored australians continue to chat fart on this thread. *

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

this ceedee rocks jim, thanks!

bogroll (bulbs), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Why are fat girls always so frisky
But you can't go touch 'em cos it's far too risky

This to me is one of the great lyrics of our time.

bulbs (bulbs), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

well all I can say is that Aussies were making grung music from about 1983, AND ITWAS CALLED GRUNGE TOO, and about three of those bands ended up on Sub Pop.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

bulbs (bulbs), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

actually i did think of the happening thang but i think them and the johnnies aren't all that "alt.".. just indie..

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

there's definitely a fundamental difference between aussie country and US country..

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

alt being a keyboard function (ie computer generation alternative)? i don't quite understand.

bulbs (bulbs), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

*wonders if I will be blessed with a copy*

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i just got the soundtrack to Open Water...composed by Graeme Revell. What a strange twist that career was. From Hard core industrial to synth dance to hollywood soundtracks (i wonder if he justifies that work with french theory?). This one is "chilling" apparently.

bulbs (bulbs), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i have the soundtrack to until the end of the world. i love it. although i don't know if that has more to do with my love of the film itself than the music.

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 05:29 (twenty-one years ago)

'The Insect Musicians' and "Byzantine Flowers' are two very nice latterday soundtracky SPK records (well after their pop phase).

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 05:40 (twenty-one years ago)

yes i always wanted to hear that insects one. how much do the sounds influence the compositions? (haha i remember reading an interview with col where he claimed to be listening exclusively to insect sounds. it was accompanied by a goofy photo)

"Jumping The Gap" by the Machinations has the best bass line of any song EVER. Now that I've got that off my chest, I'm looking for a song by an Australian synth band of the 80s called something like Anabus Form caled "Itchin' in The Kitchen". Any leads? Also, the Whirlywhirld best of and anything Andrew Duffield's put his mark on.

lido, Monday, 8 November 2004 23:18 (twenty years ago)

is the whirlywirld available on cd? i have the lp. "best of" might be a misnomer...its got eveything on it they released i think.

I can make that claim. They may well have done a few, but the one I went to was at Partington's Flat in Greensborough. The band I was in in high-school were also on the bill ("battle-of-the-bands" factor).

It was synth-rockin' action!

The lights of the city? The lights are calling (calling!)

Sweet Jesus! Yes, that is the same one, Casey B. Now THAT is amazing.

How did your band go? It's entirely likely I encountered y'all as a prepubescent, and went and called it a mere 'double bill' above. OMGGGGGGGG!!!!! I'm laughing so loudly it hurts!
