Name some bands for me to download...anything that you think is good and i'll download it...

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Friday, 29 August 2003 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"It'll End in Tears."

(Whether I'm recommending the album or predicting the future of this thread is up to you.)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 29 August 2003 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, my favorite band in the world when I was 14 was the Dead Milkmen. I'm not exactly the rabid fan I used to be, but if you like things are both genuinely punk and genuinely funny, I don't think you'll have to put much effort into liking them. Look for "Punk Rock Girl", "Stuart", "V.F.W", "Nutrition", and, of course, their fine cover of The Smiths' "Takin' Retards To The Zoo."

Jesse Fuchs (Jesse Fuchs), Friday, 29 August 2003 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Talking Heads, T. Rex & Parliament-Funkadelic

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 29 August 2003 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

No, no, no. Talking Heads are your favorite band when you're 15. Then P-Funk when you're 16, and then T. Rex when you're 17 and your freshman roommate smokes a whole lot of pot. Listening to any of them before then, however, will undoubtedly give you Reye's syndrome, just as with aspirin. Forewarned!

Jesse Fuchs (Jesse Fuchs), Friday, 29 August 2003 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i recommend electroclash and interpol. they'd be the 2003 equivalent of what i listened to when i was 14

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 29 August 2003 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

You want to listen to KISS... thats what I listened to when I was 14 and stupid...

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Friday, 29 August 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

hey Alex, surely you can recommend a better Ramones album!

hstencil, Friday, 29 August 2003 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Stence, are you doing whippets? It's Alive is the PERFECT Ramones album!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

dude the cardinal rule of rock n' roll is that live albums suck!

Rules are for nuns and librarians, man!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I found the remastered Singles Going Steady today. (it actually has a little bass, you can hear the beat!)

I think listening to it as I drove around town was the closest I've come to religious experience.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 29 August 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a beautiful thing.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd still take the first Ramones album, hell the first five, over a live album.

hstencil, Friday, 29 August 2003 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Stence, have you ever heard It's Alive, or are you simply writing it off because it happens to be a live album? It's Alive is basically the first three Ramones albums played harder, faster and sloppier in a frenzied tumult of pantsless rocktacity, and if you can't respect its majesty, your stereo should be confiscated.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

kiss me alex, then add the Chameleons "strange times" to that list.

sucka (sucka), Friday, 29 August 2003 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

*takes peek at first line*

*laughs* Alex, you're so predictable. Thank you and don't change, please. Oh, but Talk Talk and The Buzzcocks? And you think positively about Duran Duran? Wow. Happily surprising developments, film at 11.

On the original topic at hand, I don't know just exactly what it is you're familiar with. I could swan on and on about the '80s, but you could also very well already be familiar with the artists I listen to the most. As expected, I would recommend Duran Duran to you, if you haven't checked them out already. I don't think the singles are the best they have to offer, either, but rather the album tracks and b-sides. I'd also happily recommend Japan and David Sylvian to you, but I don't know if either of them would be your cup of tea and I have the feeling David Sylvian would be more of an artist you'd listen to if you were at least 18 years old. Um, I do think you should try out this Australian group called Hunters & Collectors. Their earlier material is darker and more rock-oriented, while their latter material is more stadium rock, but I quite like them all. Also a must to get into '80s-wise (and now that Alex has brought up The Buzzcocks) -- Pete Shelley's "Telephone Operator". I. Love. This. Song.

Um, hm. The best of the rest of the '80s? Well, here's a list of some of my favorites:

The Bongos, "Numbers With Wings" (jangle-pop from NJ!)
The Producers, "What's He Got" (great power-pop from Atlanta)
Romeo Void, "Never Say Never" (lovely song, this)
Kissing the Pink, "Watching Their Eyes" (yummy British New Wave)
Alphaville, "Sounds Like a Melody" (lush pop from Germany)
Captain Sensible, "Wot" (it's both silly and catchy)
Charlie Sexton, "Impressed" (I just love this song)
Corey Hart, "Eurasian Eyes" (pop with a slightly sophisticated edge)
Curiosity Killed the Cat, "Misfit" (hey, I love this song!)
Howard Jones, "Like to Get to Know You Well" (ditto!)
INXS, "Disappear" and "Kiss the Dirt (Falling Down the Mountain)" (they're more than just "Need You Tonight")
Kate Bush, "This Woman's Work" (OMG, such a beautiful and sad song)
Lene Lovich, "Bird Song" (my favorite song of hers)
Midnight Oil, "The Power & the Passion" (great Aussie rock)
Nik Kershaw, "The Riddle" (because it's loaded with great hooks)
Our Daughter's Wedding, "Auto Music" (great British New Wave)
Tears for Fears, "Change", "Mad World", "Mothers Talk", and "Advice for the Young At Heart" (because I love Tears for Fears and those are my four favorite songs from them)
'Til Tuesday, "Love in a Vacuum" and "I Could Get Used to This" (sad and great songs about love)
Tones on Tail, "Go!" (because you need to dance)
Ultravox, "We Came to Dance" and "Dancing With Tears in My Eyes" (because those are the two songs that got me hooked onto them)

Oh God, that isn't even hitting the tip of the iceberg for the full effect of '80s artists/songs I love. Hopefully you'll find yourself at least liking a good amount of artists/songs listed here.

p.s.: Alex, thanks for reminding me about Nick Cave! Ack! Too much '80s love! '80s love overload!

Just Deanna (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 29 August 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

wow thanks everyone....i wasnt expecting that many posts but thanks

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Friday, 29 August 2003 05:04 (twenty-two years ago)

god night all...until tomorrow

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Friday, 29 August 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

good**

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Friday, 29 August 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh God! I totally forgot to recommend Belfegore to you too! "All That I Wanted" is a song both Alex and I agree is fabulous, but also you should check out "Nacht in Sodom" and their song "Belfegore".

And Madness -- "It Must Be Love", "House of Fun", and "Baggy Trousers", especially!

And Classix Nouveaux's "Is it a Dream" and Comsat Angels' "Independence Day" and "I'm Falling"! And... and... I'll shut up about the '80s now.

Erm, good night. Happy downloading... I mean, sampling. :)

Just Deanna (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 29 August 2003 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

caitlin for godssakes dont buy ANY of these. run away now!!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 29 August 2003 05:10 (twenty-two years ago)

strangely i agree. with the exception of Cocteau Twins, at 14 i would have thought all these records sucked

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 29 August 2003 05:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Strongo is OTM but if you don't run away most of this should see you right.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 29 August 2003 06:31 (twenty-two years ago)

um, well she just said she liked nirvana so some of this might follow on from that but you just have to discover this stuff for yrself.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 29 August 2003 07:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i was an old fart/prat when i was 14 ... i remember listening to lots of chopin and schubert, because that was what my grandparents liked.

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 29 August 2003 07:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm envisioning this girl getting turned into like a 14-year-old female version of Alex in NYC.

Euch.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 29 August 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

PJ Harvey
Sleater-Kinney
Sonic Youth

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 August 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

But of course, if you really like Nirvana, the next logical step would be to explore their peers, their roots and their influences.

So, here's a list of sureshots:

- Pixies - Surfer Rosa
- Jesus Lizard - Goat
- REM - Murmur
- Melvins - Houdini
- Beatles - White Album

and some stuff that I think it's cool:

- Smashing Pumpkins - everything except for their last two albums (not that they're bad, only because they don't fit here)
- Eleventh Dream Day - El Moodio
- My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything, followed by Loveless
- Shellac - everything (but especially At Action Park)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh dear lord not The Mix. TransEurope Express is the Kraftwerk album to get, IMHO. Computer World is probably the most accessable. But The Mix is the worst thing they've ever put out, and I'm including the recent Tour de France single.

Thank you for asking this question because every time Alex gets on one of these album cover spewing sessions I end up seeing something that I love but haven't listened to in a long time. I guess I should thank you Alex too ;-).

I was 14 in 1994, so I was listening to Nirvana. I also really liked Sonic Youth. I'd recommend starting with Daydream Nation or Dirty before you challenge your eardrums a little further. I don't remember if I found Joy Division that year or the next, but that is a band I've never grown tired of. I'd say start with Unknown Pleasures or one of the compilations with the singles on it like Permanent. Oh yeah and as Alex reminded me, Devo's Q: Are We Not Men?... is great. I joined the Devo cult early in life.

Mike Salmo (salmo), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was fifteen, the first older records I liked (i.e., not contemporary) were the Cure and the Smiths greatest hits collections. (This despite being a pretty happy-go-lucky kid; I just loved the music, esp. singing along to it like Morrissey or Robert Smith.)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Most of you guys are thrusting her into the lion den rather swiftly. Cut her some slack! Most of the above mentioned are to an extent inaccessible for a 14 year old, especially one used to listening to Nirvana and the Beatles, which are essentially pop acts. Break her in gently.

A couple of suggestions, based on what I was listening round that time, more or less, or what I would've enjoyed looking back:

The Smiths- The Queen Is Dead
Bad Brains- I Against I
Sublime- s/t
RHCP- Blood Sugar Sex Magik (well, actually, this one's a bit more boy oriented)
The Stone Roses- s/t
Pixies- Surfer Rosa
Cheap Trick- s/t
Duran Duran- Rio
Ozzy Osbourne- Greatest Hits
Black Sabbath- Paranoid
Ramones- Rocket to Russia

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Y by the Pop Group may be a bit of a leap, yes.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say "Experimental Jet Set, Trash and no Star" was a good Sonic Youth album to start off on (it was my first, and I've loved them since).

cis (cis), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd recommend:

Journey - Escape
Cheap Trick - Heaven Tonight
Lotion - Nobody's Cool

jel -- (jel), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

don't worry about it too much, because if you're a normal 14 year-old (or perhaps, if I was a typical 14 year-old) by the time you're 17, you'll think all the stuff you listened to when you were 14 was junk anyhow.
Just enjoy what you like.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

horace OTM!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Just enjoy what you like.

Yes, she should, but she did ask for recommendations, that's the point.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

so far i downloaded some black sabbath, the replacements, the ramones, the smiths, the jusus and mary chain, pixies, and smashing pumpkins...i'll keep downloading...so far i like what i hear...thanks

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, okay, I second AINYC's Modern Lovers, esp. that first albu. This is how the boys your age think. They'll grow out of it and eventually start thinking more about Nudist Gardeners and Chewing Gum Wrappers.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

When a 14 year old knows more 80s music than you do, c/d?

Leee (Leee), Friday, 29 August 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn! I forgot the Replacements! Woe is me, godnagnamit!

I LUV THE SMITHS AND I AM A MANCHILD.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Friday, 29 August 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Way to save time is to download my picks first, Caitlin.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 29 August 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I know they've been mentioned a lot already, but seriously, Caitlin, I cannot stress enough how much you need the Ramones in your life.

Also, you could try Weezer, probably "Pinkerton".

Nick H, Friday, 29 August 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Download "Soma" by the Smashing Pumpkins if you haven't already. This should convince you to buy Siamese Dream PRONTO

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 29 August 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

YES! Weezer´s a surefire choice, although I would go with the Blue album, Nick.

And hey, Horace, I didn´t like the Smiths at all when I was in high school. Thought them whining pussies. Maybe that´s why I´m really digging the Smiths now...me devolving into a whining pussy and all.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Friday, 29 August 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

scaredy cat, Friday, 29 August 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

And I just realized you are "14" and so therefore I would like to take back my last post.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Saturday, 30 August 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Wouln't it be funny to see some dude on a nude beach, though, who was TOTALLY pale everywhere else except his genitals?

I always make a joke (when I'm talking about nude beaches, that is) that I want to go to a nude beach and wear a full body suit and ski mask, with just a hole cut out for my genitalsto hang out. It's like the REVERSE of normal every-day clothing. Just some dude in a black outfit with his dick hanging out...

Are you really 14? I'm so sorry. But, no doubt you've seen worse on this obscene thing we call the internet, right?

Scaredy Cat, Saturday, 30 August 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Gloves, too. Totally covered in black, save for one very special spot. I can't figure out if it's funnier to wear sunglasses or to have eyeholes as well.

Scaredy Cat, Saturday, 30 August 2003 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you, thank you. If I was Chris Rock and this was a stand-up routine, you'd all be laughing your asses off. Don't even "front."

ACK! (J. Sot), Saturday, 30 August 2003 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, pshaw.. :) Caitlin, when you get done laughing at certain people, I say get some.. uh.. Bad Religion! And if you like NIN, hmm.. Ministry (Stigmata, Just One Fix, Jesus Built My Hotrod), Thrill Kill Kult (A Daisy Chain 4 Satan, Days of Swine and Roses), and yes, Joy Division, all Joy Division is good Joy Division. Gary Numan "Metal."

I loved PJ Harvey when I was 15 (took patience, but hey, friends that I was convinced were cooler than me loved it, so I figured I had to.. ).. And I still like her a lot.

Really my biggest piece of advice is uh, if you don't get why something is supposed to be good, don't sell the CD (or delete the file) right away. Put it away and listen again in a couple months or whatever. Maybe a few times. And if you still don't like it, you know you don't like it - but perhaps in the meantime you'll have heard other things that make that first album suddenly seem interesting.

I liked a lot of old shit when I was 14, and I don't think time is going to have been kind to Grave Dancer's Union by Soul Asylum if I went back and played it now. But I would like to say this is one of the best threads EVAH... congrats to you all...

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Saturday, 30 August 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Can any 14-year old resist a track entitled "Wank"? If you can, you're more mature than me at 23.

Leee (Leee), Sunday, 31 August 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Caitlin, have you heard the Super Furry Animals? The albums you'd want to start with would be "Fuzzy Logic" or "Radiator".

Also, Beck? "Mellow Gold" or "Odelay".

Nick H, Monday, 1 September 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Who has a track called 'Wank'?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 1 September 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Bardo Pond wanks. So to speak.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 1 September 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy crap! Caitlin, you´re gorgeous! *swoons*
(This is soooo wrooong... ARGHHHHHH!!!!!)

I was thinking of other suggestions recently and came up with David Bowie´s Ziggy Stardust alb., which happens to have some crazy ass lyrics, that more than likely will warm the heart and crack a smile.

I will second a few other picks, as they are choice:
Buzzcocks
T REX, Mr. Marc fuggin´ Bolan
And URGE OVERKILL!
