Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, Matos, I don't know where to start...

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

That is a thing of beauty.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

one question: by rank or just arbitrarily ordered?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Just list a few tunes if you want to, no need to rank them if you find that difficult.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I thought that was a C700. I want a copy!

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

no dude, i meant YOUR list. i think if i'm parsing your answer correctly you ranked your list.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

that's not a bad list, actually. it's not right by any means, but hey...

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

only THREE Nik Kershaw songs? are you sure you didn't leave any out?

scott seward, Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

oh fuck, I didn't look at it very carefully, did i? withdraw previous comment, pls. thanks

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

A good half of those tracks should be on any 1984 list.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

6 thompson twins songs though. that seems about right.

scott seward, Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Are there actually those exclamation marks in "Doctor Doctor"? It'd definitely alter the tone of the song if there were.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"Can't you see I'm bleeding! Bleeding!"

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"I feel like a pair of curtains, curtains"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

clearly, there is Geir, and then there is the rest of humanity

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I still say Geir did OK, and you shouldn't pick on him too much for that list.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

1984 in my hood was all about breakdancin electro rnb

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

1984 was very much a breakdance year too. And hip-hop was still kind of cool then, based on cool analog synth sounds and partly originally composed hooks. Plus nobody expected it to last anyway.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

so why no fat boys on your list then?

scott seward, Thursday, 20 November 2003 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Break Machine would have been closer, I believe. But, really, there was a lot of cooler non-breakdance stuff in the UK anyway

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 20 November 2003 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i have a break machine single and it's horrible. great cover though! wasn't that a creation of that idiot village people creator?

scott seward, Thursday, 20 November 2003 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I like that "Darling Nikki" is Geir's favorite song from Purple Rain.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 20 November 2003 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"44. Too Late For Goodbyes – Julian Lennon"

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Thursday, 20 November 2003 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"Darling Nikki" is the best song Prince has ever written.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 21 November 2003 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

:_O

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 21 November 2003 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, that's :-O

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 21 November 2003 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Geir, you made Matos's nose fall off the side of his face!

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Friday, 21 November 2003 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"South Central Rain" - REM

mike a (mike a), Friday, 21 November 2003 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"South Central Rain" was on "Murmur", wasn't it? That's 1983, not 1984

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 21 November 2003 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, wasn't the Replacement's "I Will Dare" in '84? The ommission negates all your inclusions.

Andy, Friday, 21 November 2003 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Geir, I would have thought you'd prefer "Computer Blue". That's the "prog rock" track on the record.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 21 November 2003 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I like that "Darling Nikki" is Geir's favorite song from Purple Rain.

"Darling Nikki" is the best song Prince has ever written.

do i detect an important distinction between "favorite" and "best"?

vahid (vahid), Friday, 21 November 2003 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

What is this thing?: >>88. Dr. Mabuse – Propaganda<<

I have it on some weird vinyl German K-Tel-like compilation from the mid '80s and it sound like, um, some weird German thing. Sort of in the Trio/Falco/Nena genre, but you neglected to list all those guys!

chuck, Friday, 21 November 2003 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

SOUNDS like, duh.

And if "Darling Nikki" is Geir's favorite Prince song, he would be deceitful if he DIDN'T also refer to as Prince's best song.

chuck, Friday, 21 November 2003 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"South Central Rain" is on Reckoning.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 21 November 2003 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"So. Central Rain" is on Reckoning.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 21 November 2003 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

haha

See? told you.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 21 November 2003 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"I Will Dare," on the other hand, is one of the lamest songs on *Let It Be* (un-naked version) no matter WHOSE favorite it is.

chuck, Friday, 21 November 2003 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

JINX!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 21 November 2003 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

WHERE THE FUCK IS SHANNON?!?!?!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 21 November 2003 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Chuck, you're lost again.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 21 November 2003 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Shannon's hiding somewhere with ZZ Top and John Waite, apparently. (Or maybe when Geir's music changed her plans were rearranged, she went and danced with someone else.)

chuck, Friday, 21 November 2003 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Chuck your answer tears my heart apart.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 21 November 2003 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought this thread might have been about a Van Halen album.

billstevejim, Friday, 21 November 2003 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

you'll notice how I didn't even bother making my own list even though 1984 was my favorite pop year ever. see what restraint I can have? I'm so proud of myself....

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 21 November 2003 07:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought this thread might have been about a Van Halen album.

At least, "Jump" was in my list. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 21 November 2003 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

>At least, "Jump" was in my list. :-)<

And oddly not the Aztec Camera version, wow! You've HEARD that, right?

chuck, Friday, 21 November 2003 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

1984 - Greatest album ever. Top Jimmy, motherfuckers, Top Jimmy.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Where is "Jam On It"? That rocked my world in 84.

Erik Tripper (Erik Tripper), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The lack of Debarge, Fun Fun, Hanoi Rocks, Billy Ocean, Run DMC, and Two Sisters tracks is also somewhat deplorable. I am, however, impressed by the inclusion of several songs by Slade and Alphaville that I would probably like a lot if I ever actually heard them.

chuck, Friday, 21 November 2003 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

And you should be aware that Sheila E, Herbie Hancock, .38 Special, George Strait, Womack & Womack, Philip Bailey with Phil Collins, Laid Back, John Cougar Mellencamp, Steve Perry, and Denice Williams also feel sadly ignored.

chuck, Friday, 21 November 2003 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

And Tracy Ullman is completely devastated.

chuck, Friday, 21 November 2003 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

tracey ullman *should* be completely devastated because in 1984 she recorded the greatest 45 ever.

and the bruce springsteen tracks on that list should all be the arthur baker remixes.

fact checking cuz, Friday, 21 November 2003 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

And oddly not the Aztec Camera version, wow!

The Aztec Camera version
1. Is not an original composition
2. Does not have one of the best synth themes ever. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, so you *only* like original compositions? I had no idea! You're so wacky, Geir! Does that mean you discount ALL cover versions? Wow...I guess that explains the Tracy Ullman oversight too, then, right? (i.e.: Wasn't "They Don't Know" done by Kirsty Maccoll first?)

chuck, Friday, 21 November 2003 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

not only did kirsty write it and do it first, tracey re-used kirsty's instrumental backing track for her cover. i still like tracey's version better.

and if your list is supposed to be cover-free, geir, you're gonna have to delete the bangles' "going down to liverpool," since katrina and the waves did it first. although this is another case where the cover destroys the original.

fact checking cuz, Friday, 21 November 2003 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Chuck, can you commission Geir and Dave Q to do a review of the Michael Jackson greatest hits thing coming?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

What George Strait is '84, Chuck? And is "If You're Thinking You Want a Stranger" '82?

More love for Tracey. I like her version of "Bobby's Girl."

Who all agrees with me and Matos about the supreme wonderfulness of the year that was 1984?

I would have never guessed Geir for a Romantics fan, but I'm pleasantly surprised.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and New Edition are in a bit of a sulk.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

A cover version may in a few cases be an improvement on the original, but that is only if the original doesn't work out at all (type, "Mr. Tambourine Man" or those UB40 covers of badly produced Trojan hits from the late 60s)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

>>What George Strait is '84, Chuck?<<

"The Cowboy Rides Away" -- conceivably his second best single (after "Amarillo By Morning") off what's concevably his best album ever (*Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind*) I say "conceivably" because I tend to never keep up with said goody-goody bore of a man all that much. I don't even remember that other song you named!

chuck, Friday, 21 November 2003 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Did the original version of "Tainted Love" not work out at all, geir?

man, Friday, 21 November 2003 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"If You're Thinking You Want a Stranger" (kicker: "There's one comin' home") I like a lot. I'm OK with George to the mid-80s--after that it's just the same song on endless repeat. Actually, two songs--the ballad and the mild almost-uptempo.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

>>conceivably his second best single (after "Amarillo By Morning") off what's concevably his best album ever (*Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind*)<<

I meant his 2nd best single EVER (+ "Amarillo" isn't on *Fort Worth*)

chuck, Friday, 21 November 2003 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Geir, what are you saying about the original version of 'Mr Tambourine Man'?

Pete S, Friday, 21 November 2003 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he's against it.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Friday, 21 November 2003 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Who all agrees with me and Matos about the supreme wonderfulness of the year that was 1984?

well, hell, what's not to agree with? a year when mainstream pop was dominated by two of the greatest albums of all time ("purple rain" and the two-year-old-and-still-piping-hot "thriller") ... PLUS "born in the usa" PLUS every track mentioned above PLUS morris day's sensational acting debut PLUS can i hear it for lisa lisa's "i wonder if i take you home"??? PLUS the releases of about half of the all-time indie-rock canon PLUS the hoodoo gurus' "i want you back," which should be on your list, too, geir PLUS the jesus and mary chain's first 7-inch PLUS for crying out loud the lyres' "on fyre" came out that year PLUS not to mention "roxanne roxanne" PLUS PLUS PLUS PLUS PLUS...

fact checking cuz, Friday, 21 November 2003 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

If he is against it, i don't want to hear the reason why 'cos it's probably going to be a really cack-handed explanation. The Byrds took an astonishing, trancey 'oral-epic' monolith of a song and romanticised it, made it into a pretty ditty palatable for the Top40. Very nice, but like comparing the sea to a lighted fish-tank.

Pete S, Friday, 21 November 2003 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm watching "I Love the 80's - 1984" as we speak. Apparently, it wasn't all roses.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 21 November 2003 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

More, Kenan...

"If he is against it, i don't want to hear the reason why" -- thus ensuring that we all will

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Friday, 21 November 2003 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i would like to second the motion put forth by Mr. Raggett

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 21 November 2003 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

That was the year Farrah Fawcett starred in "The Burning Bed," which directly led to the Lifetime network. Just as a "ferrinstance."

Of course, Billy Idol "Rebel Yell" came out that year, too, and the IL80's crew made fun of it, but man... you all are aware that that's a really good album, right?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 21 November 2003 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, yeah, and Reagan was president. But musically, how many thorns can you find? (Pricks are another story.)

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Friday, 21 November 2003 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I was 11. I cannot remember lowlights.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 21 November 2003 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking of Lifetime, has anyone else noticed how they used to show the Fat Boys' movie "Disorderlies" like once every three months? I don't know if they still do it, but their schedule would be like
1:00 Lady Blue
2:00 Meredith Baxter Birney cancer movie
4:00 Three huge black guys wheeling Ralph Bellamy away from gangsters
6:00 Lady Blue

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Friday, 21 November 2003 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I was not 11, so....

"Footloose" by Kenny Loggins?
"Hello" by Lionel Richie?
"I Just Called to Say I Love You" by Stevie Wonder?
"Reflex" by Duran Duran?

All (US) number ones; all stinkers (tho I know many Durranies would disagree with me. I actually like Geir's pick "Wild Boys," btw.) And Lionel's song actually came from an otherwise fine (1983) album.

On the other hand, looking at the # 1's in Whitburn, I just realized that nobody seems to have mentioned "Owner of Lonely Heart"," "What's Love Got to Do With It," or "Ghostbusters" (unless they mentioned them and I wasn't paying attention.) So yeah - a really good year.

chuck, Friday, 21 November 2003 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I was 14, so I'm not much better a judge than Kenan. But as I remember it, there were enough good songs that the duds sounded less awful, because you knew that something cool would come afterwards.

Plus, it was such a good year that even people like Yes and John Waite were somehow forced to make great singles.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Friday, 21 November 2003 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Basically, everybody just wanted to sound like the Cars or something!

chuck, Friday, 21 November 2003 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ghostbusters" is good? This is news.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 21 November 2003 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

The song, I mean. The movie is k-classic, if overplayed.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 21 November 2003 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"Owner Of a Lonely Heart" was released in 1983.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 21 November 2003 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"released"

chuck, Friday, 21 November 2003 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Or 'unleashed,' like a fucking fury.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 November 2003 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Year of impact matters more than literal release dates -- it's been a Pazz and Jop rule for decades, and I live my life by it.

chuck, Friday, 21 November 2003 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

fiddo: geir's 1984 thread is a thing of beauty
mullah omar: BIG HONGRO IS WATCHING YOU
mullah omar: big hongro sounds like some slim jim style EXTREME snack
mullah omar: WHEN YOUVE GOT THAT EXXXTREME HUNGER YOU NEED AN EXXXTREME SNACK
mullah omar: BIG HONGRO TO THE RESCUE
mullah omar: it could start with like a black and white 35mm film of kids at the breakast table
mullah omar: and its playing vivaldi or something
mullah omar: and then BIG HONGRO busts through the wall

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 November 2003 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I am entranced by this beautiful vision.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 November 2003 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ghostbusters" the song is fucking ACE, u r all mistaken ("u" meaning Kenan)

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 21 November 2003 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

My roommate works at a restaurant in Santa Monica where a regular customer is John Waite. A few weeks ago he asked her out on a date, and a coworker had her convinced that he was Tom Waits' brother. I had to explain to her that Tom Waits was born in Pomona or something, and he's not British, and Waits isn't spelled the same as Waite. I'm not sure if she went out with him. She didn't remember the name of his band but she thought it was Bad Religion at first.

Hmm don't see it.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 21 November 2003 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

John Waite sent me a heartfelt, handwritten thank you note one for a Bad English review in Entertainment Weekly where I only gave the album a "B"! Not even a "B+"! It actually made me kinda sad; it's sort of pathetic to thank a critic for such a mediocre grade, isn't it? But he is obviously a very nice and polite man.

chuck, Friday, 21 November 2003 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, that Bad English record really didn't live up to the promise. Blue Murder and Mr. Big, the other two big supergroups of 1989, made better albums.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 21 November 2003 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

1975 kicks 1984's ass. People, WAKE UP!

musicmope (musicmope), Saturday, 22 November 2003 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, it's absolutely possible that any year between 1956 (1929?) (the beginning of recording technology?) and 1982 kicks 1984's ass. But I'm not gonna go back and check, I promise. The fact that 1984 was at least mariginally better than 1983 and 1985, however, is extremely difficult to dispute.

chuck, Saturday, 22 November 2003 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

way better than 85, but 83 was damn good, as were most of the 80s up to 84.

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 22 November 2003 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

after that it all went to hell except for hip-hop < /gross overstatement>

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 22 November 2003 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

2:00 Meredith Baxter Birney cancer movie

OMG I;m crapping my pants right now!

calstars (calstars), Saturday, 22 November 2003 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I too thought this was going to be a thread about Van Halen's 1984. Bummer.

1985 Was When It All Started to Turn to Shit

WHITE HORSE!

Eisbar needs a fix.

"Ghostbusters" would've been given a collective critical blow-job if it was done by George Clinton, but I can see why people are deluded into thinking the song sucks -- the video has Carly Simon cooties. (Well, needless B-list cameo cooties. I like Carly.)

Anyway, I don't CARE what y'all think about 1984 vs. 1981 vs. 1966 vs. 1929 vs. 1953 vs. 1971 vs. whateva. 1984 is MY fuckin' year, people! Step off!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 November 2003 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ghostbusters" would've been given a collective critical blow-job if it was done by George Clinton

what if it were done by, say, critic's darlings Huey Lewis and the News?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 24 November 2003 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

what if it were done by, say, critic's darlings Huey Lewis and the News?

It would fall pray to the incredibly biogted and uneccessary Huey-hate of 'smart' rock critics everywhere. Which I happen to share. Your point?

Ha ha ha. Yes yes, I KNOW "Ghostbusters" is supposed to, hell, was written to sound just like "I Want A New Drug," though those similarities didn't occur to me at ALL until over fifteen years later with the Huey Lewis Behind the Music episode. Seriously! Anyway "IWAND" doesn't have a shouted chorus, which is why it's not as good as "Ghostbusters." A subtle distinction, I know, but rock is a game of subtle distinctions between unsubtle things.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 November 2003 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Do I need to point out that one of these songs is about the genius topic of GHOSTS and the busting thereof! And that it's not Huey's? I mean, what kind of tool would write a great riff like that and then not realize he's supposed to sing about ghosts? The victor here is clear--Ray was performing an important community service.

Plus if George had written it we'd have had "Ghost Dog." In fact, that's how I'm gonna sing "Ghostbusters" from now on. Or at least for the rest of the day.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Monday, 24 November 2003 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

the genius topic of GHOSTS and the busting thereof!

You make a persuasive case.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 24 November 2003 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The case makes itself. I merely present the facts.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Monday, 24 November 2003 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

If you have dose of a freaky ghost, baby, I think you better call!

BrianB, Monday, 24 November 2003 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ghost Dog!"
See how much fun that makes it?

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Monday, 24 November 2003 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the problem in retrospect are those goony shouted voices. That is not a good shout.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

You need some Vels on there - "Tell Me Something", "Private World" or "Look My Way". I'm not sure which might have been singles from '83, but '84 was the year Velocity came out.

Curt (cgould), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

au contraire, Ned--those goony voices are what MAKES the song so much fun, simply by being so goony and therefore inclusive to every knob on the street who hears the song on the radio.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Eee. This may be truth but I am unsettled.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 30 November 2003 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

This is what I've been doing while I've been sick, btw.

Not included because I don't like them: Let It Be, "The Boys of Summer," "Rockbox," "Small Town Boy," Alphaville, Robyn Hitchcock.

Weak on: classical/post-classical, blues, gospel, reggae, Africa, Brazil.

Suggestions would be grand.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 30 November 2003 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

You need some Vels on there - "Tell Me Something", "Private World" or "Look My Way". I'm not sure which might have been singles from '83, but '84 was the year Velocity came out.

seconded. Your kind words on the Vels will not go unreported, sir.

Oh, and country. Way weak on country.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 30 November 2003 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The Sisters of Mercy - "Walk Away"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 30 November 2003 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, add Coil's "Restless Day" and maybe Dylan's performance of "Jokerman" on the Letterman show (the Plugz backed him up!).

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 30 November 2003 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

god even lou reed had a great song that year

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 1 December 2003 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

anyhow, 1984 = best year for music ever

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 1 December 2003 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

no echo and the bunnymen on yer list, geir? do you hate them, too?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 1 December 2003 08:14 (twenty-one years ago)

No, but I am not that fond of them either. Like The Cure a lot better.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 1 December 2003 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The Scorpions put out their best album, what, 13(?) years into their career in 1984. "I'm Leaving You" is my favorite 1984 song, it's got at least three astounding parts.

Kris (aqueduct), Monday, 1 December 2003 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

What are those parts, Kris? I just snagged it from S0uls3ek and sad to say I don't hear its virtues.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 1 December 2003 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

nothing by The Fall?

hstencil, Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:39 (twenty-one years ago)

as chuck noted upthread, something by Run-DMC should be on this. I nominate "It's Like That."

hstencil, Tuesday, 2 December 2003 06:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"It's Like That" is '83, though. Mike already said no "Rock Box," but surely something else from the first album?

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 07:11 (twenty-one years ago)

ah crap.

VERY INTERESTING STUFF ABOUT 1984 CAN ALSO BE FOUND HERE:

did mick mercer have the best taste of any melody maker critic in 1984?

Also, I listened to the album today.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

twelve years pass...

I'm reading the Replacements book right now. They talk as if it were a complete wasteland that year with no good records besides the Mats, the SST trilogy (Husker/Minutemen/MPuppets) and Prince. So absurd.

I've been enjoying these lately:

Hoodoo Gurus - Stoneage Romeos
The Jazz Butcher - A Scandal In Bohemia
True West - Drifters
The Lotus Eaters - No Sense Of Sin
The Dream Syndicate - Medicine Show
Gun Club - The Las Vegas Story
Hunters & Collectors - Jaws Of Life
Scientists - Blood Red River
The Effigies - For Ever Grounded
The Rip - A Timeless Peace EP
Nits - Adieu, Sweet Bahnhof
Care - Diamonds & Emeralds
The Cult - Dreamtime

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 18 January 2018 18:09 (seven years ago)

Complete wasteland? My god, 1984 was beyond fertile. Granted, it was my year zero in terms of exposure to the underground but there's such a huge variety of great records from this year:

Altrock: REM - Reckoning / The Smiths - The Smiths & Hatful Of Hollow / Lloyd Cole & The Commotions - Rattlesnakes
Alternapop: The Blue Nile - A Walk Across The Rooftops / Prefab Sprout - Swoon / Felt - The Splendour Of Fear & The Strange Idol Pattern
Synthpop: Depeche Mode - Some Great Reward / Thomas Dolby - The Flat Earth / Nik Kershaw - The Riddle & Human Racing
Dreampop: Cocteau Twins - Treasure
Aussie rock: Nick Cave - From Her To Eternity / The Saints - A Little Madness To Be Free / Laughing Clowns - Law Of Nature
Folk punk: Billy Bragg - Brewing Up With... / Violent Femmes - Hallowed Ground / Robyn Hitchcock - I Often Dream Of Trains
Second wave punk: New Model Army - Vengeance
Industrial: Cabaret Voltaire - Microphonies / Foetus - Hole / Fad Gadget - Gag / Danielle Dax - Jesus Egg That Wept
Kiwi weirdness: This Kind Of Punishment - A Beard Of Bees
Doing their own thing: The Fall - The Wonderful And Frightening World Of...
Celtic punk: The Pogues - Red Roses For Me
Paisley Underground: The Dream Syndicate - Medicine Show / The Long Ryders - Native Sons
Old punks still doing their thing: The Stranglers - Aural Sculpture

I could go on. The Replacements' "Let It Be" was a fantastic record but it competed with a crapton of amazing albums that year.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 18 January 2018 21:09 (seven years ago)

Nice, will check that book out. 1984 was definitely THE landmark year of the '80s. I know it seemed that way at the time, just read Robert Christgau and Dave Marsh's write-ups published at year's end and soon after. But time has been especially kind now that the underground scene and the groundbreaking hip-hop records of that year have blown up in stature.

birdistheword, Thursday, 10 December 2020 02:51 (four years ago)
