I cannot stop listening to the aural trainwreck that is "EMU". She sings the entire song a half-step flat up until the VERY LAST PHRASE. It's kind of awe-inspiring.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 11 December 2003 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, I bet it's on purpose. Totally. Tension and release, bwoyee.

Take one of these and call me in the morning.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 11 December 2003 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

some nice reviews of the Violent J album linked:

"Let it Rain" is a great tune concerning the weather and it's unpredictability.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 11 December 2003 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

haha! someone ELSE is infected! check her website -- it's been changing daily.

El Santo Claus (Kingfish), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I would love to check this out, but I'm late for the party. What happened to her MP3s?

r, Saturday, 13 December 2003 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, found a link in the other thread.

Uh, it's well more than a half-step's worth of difference in a lot of places. This has to have been done on purpose.

The better question is "why."

r, Saturday, 13 December 2003 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

four weeks pass...
It looks like Lauryn Hill is following Marissa's lead...

At laurynhill.com you can watch a video (up to three times!) for $15, buy her book for $75, and get autographed posters and art photos for $500.

Er? I shall listen to this and report.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus, I barely got through the first 45 seconds.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

thank you j0hn... that was truly inspiring.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 04:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Good lord that radio "interview" is frightening. And hilarious. Its like the silly play tapes I used to make... WHEN I WAS FIVE.

She really is a bit unhinged isnt she?

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 04:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm actually starting to think this whole thing is some elaborate hoax, Landover Baptist style. Im not sure why... something is odd about it.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 04:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ani deFRANCA?"

I have a new catchphrase.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 05:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The final thirty seconds are truly psychotic, though!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 05:13 (twenty-one years ago)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

This "interview" is phenomenal. Can we set it to the "Funky Drummer" beat?

:( wtf

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

it is a masterpiece but i don't know too much abt this woman: this sounds kinda like something a kid would do when just bought their first tape recorder or something: not the promotional tact of a professional musician: is she ok?

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

She is so not ok it's "not funny" (i.e. it is kinda funny really)..

In brief: Her songs are actually pretty good. She gets pissed off with comparisons to Tori Amos, but they are kind of unavoidable. But she is 'suffering' from some kind of mania/paranoia/whatever. So everything that should be a minor bugbear gets blown out of all proportion, to the extent of rambling on her website/chalkboard/'interview mp3's'. Etcetera. In a nutshell...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 15 January 2004 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm actually starting to think this whole thing is some elaborate hoax, Landover Baptist style. Im not sure why... something is odd about it.

Haha, antiorp unplugged, perhaps?

I still think she's great. I really really want her to succeed.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 15 January 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I just tried to listen to the 'radio interview', but i couldn't make it through it.

janni (janni), Thursday, 15 January 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

misplaced "i"! i'm already on my way to being a schizoid pop diva in my own mind!

janni (janni), Thursday, 15 January 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to hear her music now. Completely insane.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 16 January 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
You people rot. You are so jealous of Marissa Marchant. The woman is a genius. What are you? NOthing, I suspect. I listened to Marisa on her site. She was totally on tune. So you found an imperfect song. Wow, you are real winners. Ha.
Why are you so jealous of Marissa's voice? Because you are a want a be? Right?
Marissa is fabulous. Emu is a fabulous and I am sure that she will do it over and have perfect like her song For You are El Sol Qu.
You are so jealous of her exceptional talent it shows. FOAD. Fuck off and die.

Robert Rugnette, Monday, 2 February 2004 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that I will never see
A poem as lovely as a tree
But when confronted by a choad
I will simply tell him "FOAD."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 February 2004 04:14 (twenty-one years ago)

God you are so envious of her talent She is clearly a high professional talent and I went on her site. She is out of this world. She is not amateurish. She is much more talented then everyonen that I am hearing in the music industry right now. Are you talentless wanta bes? It sounds like it. You are lying about her talent because you are terribly terribly jealous of this woman who is a genius. Obviously you are nothing but dumb. Get fucked! I love Emu, and her recording is not proof of talent. she is great!
I went on her site to her more. I was blown away! Fuck off wanta be losers! Get a life and get some talent

Wade, Monday, 2 February 2004 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, you're just a want a be

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 2 February 2004 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree. You are shit, Marissa is not.

Jem, Monday, 2 February 2004 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

get one life!!

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 2 February 2004 04:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah shaddup a your face

Joe Dolce, Monday, 2 February 2004 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

This is Marissa posting under several different aliases, I trust.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 February 2004 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

hey Marissa, i'll give you five bucks if you cover a Slowdive song...

Kingfish Funyun (Kingfish), Monday, 2 February 2004 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

You are hoping that in your sick mind. Marissa has a public website for many people to see. Don't you think that some people may think that she is fantastic? Did you hear her new version of For You? I did. I was on there just now.
Why do you wish and fantasize that Marissa has no talent? Does it make you feel good to knock someone down who are you are jealous of?
I think that you have tremendous problems. That girl can sing. She is fantastic! Thanks for help, I love to hear great music!
I was on the internet surfing, when I stumbled upon this message.
And realized that you need a lashing!
I love Marissa Marchant!!!!! Hail Hail. What a beautiful woman!

Orb, Monday, 2 February 2004 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

never for one moment have i fantasised about marissa having no talent.

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 2 February 2004 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Why are you jealous of Marissa Marchant?
Dan Perry is a loser who has no talent. Marissa has talent.
You don't have any talent and I am not Marissa. I like people with talent. What is your problems. We would like to know?

Janie, Monday, 2 February 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

after all she's making people happy and that's what it's all about. right? am i right folks?

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 2 February 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yea, why are you so jealous of Marissa Marchant?
You probably hate people in general and hate people who are not average because you are average. I like people who are talented. I am sorry that you don't agree. You are disturbed. Marissa is hot.

Robwire, Monday, 2 February 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

yay!

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 2 February 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Marissa, you fixed the pitch problem in the Emu recording, right?

Kingfish Funyun (Kingfish), Monday, 2 February 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I was a moderator just so I could go look at the IP address of all these Marissa supporters and laugh soo hard.

Dan I., Monday, 2 February 2004 04:48 (twenty-one years ago)

amazingly, another 50thousand dollars check
was mailed to me this week ..isn't that just amazing. Everyone is gathering
together to send me money. I am impressed with public now. Thx all!

Posted by: Marissa

I see; so now that you have $100,000+ in the bank, marissa, you have been able to quit your day job and devote your time to addressing your internet detractors, right?

Dan I., Monday, 2 February 2004 04:51 (twenty-one years ago)

hi marissa!

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Monday, 2 February 2004 05:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Marissa needs to do another interview in order to address Janet Jackson's half time show.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 2 February 2004 05:09 (twenty-one years ago)

But that would involve focusing on someone besides herself!

Dan I., Monday, 2 February 2004 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I was a moderator just so I could go look at the IP address of all these Marissa supporters and laugh soo hard.

*does so*

Umm, I got here late.. Did I miss summat?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 2 February 2004 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

call yourself a fan.. you're just a want a be

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 2 February 2004 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Fair play to Marissa - in "I was on the internet surfing, when I stumbled upon this message. And realized that you need a lashing!" I now have the perfect comeback to all my internet detractors!

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Where on earth do they speak English like Marissa speaks English? Cos she's very popular there, obviously.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

can I just point out, explicitly, that we are now in the presence of Marissa Marchant herself, posting under multiple aliases, and that our moderators can/(have?) confirm(ed) this.

Is this as wonderful a moment for everybody else as it is for me?

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

also, in case anybody didn't notice, some of the formerly-missing mp3s are now up & they are phenomenal

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

They go up and down all the time, like a ........

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I see the radio interview has gone, that's OK I just managed to get it before...

How's the new "For You"? My home link has gone down again...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

hahah blitzed by no fewer than five completely random marissa supporters in the span of exactly half an hour! what are the CHANCES

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

blitzed? where?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"for you" is of course spectacular. However her most recent posting at the "gigs" link made me feel really sad. All her new corkboard posting are about how men never ask her out on dates.

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm sure both robert rugnette and roger wade would love to date her

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

and Kevin too...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 2 February 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, her rants seems to always take on a depressive tone and radical shift in direction about 1/3rd of the way in. Check one of her most recent ones where she goes talks about her voice teacher yelling at here.

Kingfish Funyun (Kingfish), Monday, 2 February 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah - but the newer ones (check the order page) are even more down-in-the-mouth than usual - not just angry but bitter.

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Monday, 2 February 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

also works

stevem (blueski), Monday, 2 February 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

She claims on her "corkboard" that someone actually sent her a check for 50gs. Result!!

I'd ask her out for a date like a shot. She's, er, "intriguing", plus I think she looks great!! I'm already "spoken for" though, ah well...

They've already been posted (ie there's no substantial difference between the emails, which was the same message sent three times, and the posts on this thread)!

Woe is me, I have no talent! Classical music is for the weak!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 February 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

hee hee hee. was it the same message from "three different people"?

Kingfish Funyun (Kingfish), Monday, 2 February 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

No! It was from the same person sent three times!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 February 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 February 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 2 February 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi Marissa! You and I have something in common! We both love vegetarian Indian food!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 2 February 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Marissa on tacos:

do you love tacos. I buy the shells at the healthfood store.
I love olives, avacado.
and salsa.
..I like with cheese.
what do you suggest for tacos..anything different??

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 2 February 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

OK Dan Perry, I hope you're happy. Marissa isn't pleased and has removed all her mp3s - she's now charging $1000 each for them (although why you'd expect people to pay that for something they have no idea what it sounds like I have no idea - her original idea was more valid, where at least people might have had an idea what they were getting into). Now you lot will never hear the performance on Emu - although it's a shame to single out that, as it's the only really bad one I've heard.

If she wants that much money for them, it'd be dreadful if you could browse them in the ILM room, wouldn't it. Not that I'd be expecting anyone to do that, obviously.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

There's still other songs up! "Emu" is gone, but "Finding Girl" is still there, and "El Sol Que Tu Eres," and "Nevermind" - at the moment I have all three files playing at once through the magic of tabbed browsing, and it's completely amazing

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

You can get them from this page.

I think we have covered the subject in some detail..

Anyhow,

MM News: She has a kurzweil (whatever that is) and is adding additional drums and bass to her demo tapes. One of the new tracks is on-line. Everything else is the same as before...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

A Kurzweil is a very high quality pro digital keyboard. Like many such instruments, it is based on sample replay, but their samples are allegedly better than anyone else's. This is hearsay, mind. I can't actually afford one, though I'd love one.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

how many cds would she have to sell to buy one?

brian badword (badwords), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Listen to Marissa's music:

My address is:
Marissa Marchant
P.O Box 2021
Framingham, Massachusetts

I don't use Pay Pal anymore. It is too danerous for you to use it. There are hackers. Send checks of money orders to Norma Morris. Make the checks out to Norma Morris and mail it to Marissa Marchant. Norma will cash it for me. She takes care of business. She is my agent of sorts. Now, do you want a bargain? Each cd will cost you 1000 dollars. You can donate money as well. You can buy a single for 200 dollars. When you are at Marissamarchant.com, you are at a museum. I am one of the finest talents in the world. Since major do not promote or look for the highest level of talent. I have to promote myself and tell the truth to the public who is being lied to.
All songs(except El Sol Que Tu Eres) are composed by, Marissa Marchant. All songs are copywrited. El Sol Que Tu Eres is not for sale. All songs were performed by Marissa Marchant.

Careful, all songs are copywrited

help help help help: there are two new songs up at Marissa's site, both instrumentals, and I really like them a lot

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Which songs? I can never figure out which songs are new on her site

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

improv 1 & "Wu" are the new'ns

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

the second one is sorta pretty.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I like all her songs, can't understand what the problem is. Can't hear the out of tune bits or anything. They're good songs. You don't get that kind of talent in the marketplace these days.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, have you heard "EMU"??????

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

inevitable mashup: "emu-tional rescue"

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't call me dude.

No, but I've always liked emus so I applaud a song about them whatever its form or content.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Buddy, you've GOT to hear "EMU"! It will change your life.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

ALRIGHT. I WILL HEAR EMU. But if it doesn't make 'My Pal Foot Foot' sound like Eiffel 66 I'm going to be very disappointed.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I want to hear the Shaggs version of "My Console"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Oddly, I did not start this thread. But I get WAY too excited when I hear there's new tracks on her website. (I have to get them tonight as I can't get MP3s here.) One, Me Fang Wu is or was a guitar instrumental, but with new backings. One called "It's Sun" which is apparently upbeat but is only a backing, and one is called "4 Nico" which I don't know anything of.

The Saint Mark's Poetry Project, New York City, USA
Monday, May 27, 1985

This was meant to be a fairly straight-forward presentation of some of my films with my presence adding little more to it than the possible giving out of MIKE FILM DISTRIBUTION FORMS (forms containing some of the approximately 46,800 super-8 frames of film that I'd cut up for the purpose of having them put in odd places around the world + information about what other people had done with theirs) & my cutting a "double negative" symbol into my leg with an exacto knife while my film "A Double Negative As Not A Positive" (a quasi-document made with HannaH AvivA / Casandra vonRinteln of us cutting into each other's skin with exacto knives). Much to my surprise though, the audience called me a psychopath (which I sometimes think of myself as) & tried to stop the showing of "Neoist Guide Dog" (see the entry about this) because they thought I was exploiting the "poor blind woman". Much to the projectionist/organizer Mark Nasdor's credit he resisted them & the short "show" went to its conclusion.

Mark Nasdor designed Marissa's website.

Does anyone still have that entire "radio interview" thing? I tried to download it from the old link and only managed to get the first 30 seconds.

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm rarely listen to Howard Stern, but a few weeks ago there was a girl on the show hardcore BAWLING about how talented she was and how all she ever wanted was a chance, "Because I'm REAL (sob sob), I am so REAL! Please, somebody just give me a chance!" and on and on. Marissa?

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, he has people like that calling in all the time. Sometimes he invites them to the studio to have them sing a song and then he and his cronies belittle them. Fun!

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, it was more sad than funny, but Marissa is somehow more funny than sad.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait wait wait wait WAIT! Did anyone listen to "It's Sun"? I am in tears and my side hurts.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

But "Nevermind" is actually good. I'm perplexed. How can the same person sing so out on one song and so adequately on the next.

I kind of like her Tennessee Williams-esque interviewer. It's also at least *interesting* that she doesn't like any of the american folk and pop traditions at all. I mean, you don't hear that very often from a pop singer.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 19 November 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

o.k I made some mistakes by telling my thoughts out loud on the net.
and then my old boyfriend from years ago who was stalking mnd abusing me mentally, just mentally, went crazy on the net, and he is an obsessive with changing his email address and getting his cousin to harass me etc...
i have been continually harassed and mocked by tons of people.
Just because I have said things they disagree with.
but for two years, I haven't said much to people on the net.
I can't deal with the negativity anymore, the insults and the abuse.
I took it down and have a new name, that I am going to promote somewhere where people may not just mock me. and not have emu with the bad notes and stupid radio interviews. some people wanted me to feel uncomfortable on the net by constantly harassing me ..day in and day out. someone I know even posted my phone number to be mean on the net everywhere. and i am getting pranks..but i will soon change my phone number if it continues.
this is the only board that people are actually somewhat kind. thanks..
don't take it personally, I am still here, redoing my recordings..
i just don't like all the negativity about my name.

I'm listening to Emu on headphones, and I my head keeps tilting from side to side, and i get this weird sensation that my ears are BENDING, in attempts to compensate for the sense I get that she's singing out of tune.
But then I realize that it's meant to be. She's forging new sonic paths. The world is now divided between those who are with MARISSA MARCHANT and those who ARE NOT with MARISSA.

"Thurston Revival / Thurston Revival (The Dark Arts Gramophone Company)
Recordings By Mark Moldowan
Publish Date: April 20, 2006
Remember that arty kid in high school who wrote bad poetry and took himself way too seriously? Well, he started a band, and it's called the Thurston Revival. The first release from the Revival is a self-titled EP. Truth be told, EP is stretching it a bit-it's more of a single, really, with a B-side, then a big waste of time. The disc isn't totally terrible. "Cool," the first and shortest track, was so good that the Thurston Revival decided "Hey, let's put the exact same song on the EP again, but make it longer and call it 'Coolsong'! Brilliant!" Unfortunately, when it comes along the second time around, you realize why it was so short to begin with: stretched out, it's repetitive and boring."

Dudes! You have to read the comments section on this SF Weekly piece from 2005. As recently as a month ago there has been someone posting under the name Peoniesfleur vehemently denying that Marissa every existed and that it was all made up. A new layer to the crazy:

I think that they changed her name, changed the titles of her songs, and made up this whole story about 1000 dollar cds to mock and harass her. I do not think she has ever been on IXL.
You have no proof of that either. There was never a person on the net named Marissa Marchant. EVER.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:59 (fourteen years ago)

You never EVER her

Hysterically Hardcore (snoball), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:00 (fourteen years ago)

You know, there was never anyone on the net named Marissa Marchant. Even Chris Dahlen (the author of this article) admitted to that. What proof is there that there was a person named Marissa Marchant? People have this fictitious story out there only for the pleasure of some online harassers that do not have a life of any kind. Who cares if some person who is just another songwriter who doesn't have any talent charges 1000's of dollars for their cd and everyone laughs at them? Obviously, she is not worth writing about in a serious manner. I do think that people were extremely jealous of her talent though. I am not this person. You have no proof. Stop using newspapers and the net as a place to harass, defame, mock and torment people. You have no right to take people's copyrighted material and change their name and make up stories about people. She could contact the FBI. Cyber stalking is a federal offense.

satisfying punishment for that thing he said about lesbians (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:01 (fourteen years ago)

This article was ONLINE harassment and defamation of character. This musician never charged this much money for a CD. The author never spoke to the person before they wrote this misinformed article. They took online gossip and rumors and formed their lame article about a person who has never been online selling cd's at that price. There is nothing in the article about their talent which is dishonest. The most important factor of this artist is their talent. This article is disrespectful, sarcastic and abusive.

I don't think I ever actually heard her music.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 22:09 (fourteen years ago)

I never did either.

fela cudi (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 22:48 (fourteen years ago)

She was the only sane and talented person who has ever posted on these boards. Not brainwashed by the criminal music industry scam or by the merely human musical scales our simple ears are used to, either.

StanM, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 22:48 (fourteen years ago)

Listening to EMU. Are all her songs out of tune Kate Bush?

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 22:53 (fourteen years ago)

I actually kind of love that this was what the fuss was about.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 22:54 (fourteen years ago)

well that and the $1000 CDs

sleeve, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 22:58 (fourteen years ago)

Comparing her to a commercial industry product like kate bush is a complete insult and a lie. That song is clearly a tribute to Creedence Clearwater Revival.

StanM, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 23:05 (fourteen years ago)

was just listening to a prog on the radio about the Portsmouth Sinfonia today. kindred spirits perhaps

that radio interview is like a brain-addled, disturbing grownup version of Gilda Radner's 'Judy Miller Show' SNL sketch. somehow the most unearthly part of it is the way the interviewer pronounces "Bela Fleck".

I have a theory (inspired by something I read about Jandek) that all of her internet postings were composed during a single, manic, 24-hour self-clowning session. like a supernova burns with the heat of a trillion suns before cooling off in a flash, the Marissa Marchant persona spewed out more fuming self-righteousness in a day than most of us can manage in a lifetime, and every message we've gotten from her over the past 7 years is a carefully-chosen excerpt from that initial outburst.

why delonge face? (unregistered), Thursday, 25 August 2011 00:49 (fourteen years ago)

unregistered I don't know how to break this to you but I think the "interviewer" is the same person as the interviewee

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 25 August 2011 00:50 (fourteen years ago)

btw that Jandek theory was a fun idea but also was untrue

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 25 August 2011 00:52 (fourteen years ago)

OTOH the "single burst of concentrated charisma & talent" version of that idea appears to have actually been true of Axl Rose

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 25 August 2011 00:57 (fourteen years ago)

oh you just had to blow all my illusions apart, didn't you, aerosmith?

what's next, are you going to tell me that her singing in "Emu" sounds off-key not because the tone-deaf music industry has brainwashed us with no-talent mcdonalized poptarts who win phony awards for hitting the wrong notes, but because she's actually singing really really badly off-key? I don't think I can handle this.

why delonge face? (unregistered), Thursday, 25 August 2011 01:11 (fourteen years ago)

ahem:

I quickly crossfaded straight into 'Emu'. he was very friendly and stood there and the second the first verse started, he dug in, and listened intently through the entire first chorus. and the end of that time I finally said 'she sings that chorus the exact same way each time -- she's not improvising, that's exactly the way she means it, she knows exactly what she wants.' and he nodded, and said 'I think it is something in her ear', smiled and walked away

I choose, perhaps advisably, to refrain from critically analyzing the musical taste + output of this performer
