When you hear a good single this year you add it to the list, yes?

Numbered just for fun.

9. Britney Spears - Toxic

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 5 January 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

10) Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out (shocked, but seriously - it sounds like a poncy Scottish Daft Punk! Ace!)
11) Boogie Pimps - Somebody to Love
12) Emma Bunton - I'll Be There

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The first 30 seconds of the Franz Ferdinand I enjoyed but why oh why do they have to fuck about with the tempo. All these bands think they're so bloody clever with their cockfarming tempo changes - just find a beat and fucking stick to it you rabble!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

That's you told, Bomb the Bass/Mantronix/Coldcut/Steinski/Grandmaster Flash!

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

My original post had the word "indie" before "bands" but oh no, I thought, I'll take it out, why take pot-shots at indie, it's a new year after all, etc etc, and what do I get?!! Bah.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

13) Junior Senior - Shake Your Coconuts

Am debating whether or not to put Fatman Scoop's new one forward... probably won't. Yet.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't, FMS's nu one is terrible.

Tico -- so only 'real' dance acts can mess with tempo, eh, eh? ;)

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I used to think that too, but I've just heard it and... hmm...

this may be because I'm currently listening to Amy Studt covering All I Wanna Do, though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

YES. Indie drummers and fanny dangle do not mix well.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Amy Studt covering All I Wanna Do

For shame! It is a big let-down. Contender for most pointless cover of the year. What's she getting at with the faux-Americana vid, though?

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

14) Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster - Mister Mental

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 5 January 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

15) junior boys - "high come down"

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 5 January 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

(even though it is now - gack - nearly three years old.)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 5 January 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

16) Skepta ft DEE & Jamie - Thuggish Ruggish.

Kinda old but i think it officially came out today.

peckham rye, Monday, 5 January 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i could say Braxe&Falke's 'Arena' and Crystal City' as i suspect my 'Rubicon' championing has got very boring now (they are all on the same single release this month though)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 5 January 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Eighties Matchbox single is awful.

17. Madrugada - "Majesty"

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 5 January 2004 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The amy studt video is filmed in the faux american diner that you pass driving out of london on the A40!

Robin Goad (rgoad), Monday, 5 January 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

it's funny that that Sasha track (two year's old now) is being repromoted as a Sean Paul one. It's rub anyway.

18. Brandy - Turn It Up
19. Beyonce - Me Myself & I (Panjabi MC "Eastern Delight" mix)

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 5 January 2004 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

sigh...many a time have i wished to dine at said establishment, but it always looks shut - and you can only access it from the A40 if you're travelling west.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 5 January 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

boogie pimps...hmmm, have you seen the video?

jel -- (jel), Monday, 5 January 2004 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, it is horrifying. i hope c*l*m never sees it.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 5 January 2004 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

20. Nick Cannon and R. Kelly-"Gigolo"

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Monday, 5 January 2004 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

23. 2play feat Raghav & Jucxi - So Confused

cis (cis), Monday, 5 January 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Joss Stone - Fell in Love With a Boy

I think. Haven't quite made my mind up about this yet. I might grow on me or off me.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Monday, 5 January 2004 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

(24, sorry)

David Merryweather (DavidM), Monday, 5 January 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

some people are fudging the "2004" part, i think. (unless this is a us vs. uk release date thing.)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 5 January 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

tattle-tale

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 5 January 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

26. victoria beckham - 'this groove'

cozen¡ (Cozen), Monday, 5 January 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just guessing that the Kanye West song with the Lauryn Hill sample "Self Concious" will be release as a single in 2004. It ought to be. If so, then that's 27.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 5 January 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

30. Usher - Yeah ('04, right?)
31. Elephant Man - Blessed/Bounty Killer - Hot Like Fire
32. Memphis Bleek ft. Jay-Z - Murda Murda (Scott Storch's production on this sounds like he listened to This Is Not A Test and "Dirt off your Shoulder" and thought "I can *so* do this better". Actually Storch is a great understudy isn't he??)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

33. Girls Aloud - You Freak Me Out

Nick H (Nick H), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

34) Belle & Sebastian - I'm A Cuckoo

They're playing the Avalanches remix of this on Radio 1 right now. It is tip-top.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Because what B&S have always been crying out for is a Sudanese choir.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

AVALANCHES REMIX?!!!!!

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Ab-so-lute-ly.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Featuring a Sudanese choir.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

40)Petey Pablo - Freek A Leek
41)Alicia Keys - U Don't Know My Name
42)Obie Trice - The Set Up

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 10 January 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard about this Avalanches mix earlier on this week... is anywhere sharing it? No joy on Soulseek.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 10 January 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

No 41 was last year, was it not?

Surprise of the day: being able to second William's Emma Bunton suggestion - she's now had FOUR great solo songs!

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 10 January 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

No 41 was last year, was it not?

Probably. I have trouble keeping up with young people's popular music.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 10 January 2004 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I seriously might die if I don't hear that Avalanches remix very very soon

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 10 January 2004 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

43. Paul Campbell - "Take You Home"

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 11 January 2004 08:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Twista [ft. Kanye West & Jamie Foxx]: Slow Jamz

Actually, the verses could be stronger. Chorus couldn't.

Ryan Pitchfork, Sunday, 11 January 2004 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

44. Richard X feat Javine - 'You Used To'
(Repetitve/obsessed, moi?)
45. Beyonce feat Lil Kim - 'Naughty Girl'
(Assuming Kim gels with the track)

Barima (Barima), Sunday, 11 January 2004 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

46. Basement Jaxx feat JC Chasez - 'Plug It In'

My contribution dies here, seeing as I'm isolated from 'rolling' music releases for the next few months, baring all the hip hop and r'n'b I can pick up off radio and MTV.

Barima (Barima), Sunday, 11 January 2004 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Grr I love "You Used To" but Richard X needs to release "You (Better Let Me Love You x4) Tonight" as a single so Tiga can go head-to-head with Justin on "drums!"

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 11 January 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Been doing that in my head since August, dude.

I think S Reynolds tipped hi-NRG for a comeback, so it's a great choice for later this year p'haps, esp. b/w a Rock Jacket mix by Zongamin, Ewan Pearson, Tony Senghore or Cut Copy. Also U&K if the Pet Shop Boys experience a 2nd renaissance.

Barima (Barima), Sunday, 11 January 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

More more more Ewan Pearson plz!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 11 January 2004 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Just checked Soulseek for Avalanches remix of B&S.

One person has it, 165 people queing for it.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Sunday, 11 January 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

35. Busta Rhymes, Chingy, Fat Joe, Nick Cannon and Just Blaze - "Shorty (Put It On The Floor)"

Yes, Al! First great Just Blaze of the year!!! That Jae Millz is pretty good too.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 11 January 2004 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Eamon: "F**k It (I Don't Want You Back)"

Bombastic, over-impassioned Usher-type ballad, but filled with swears! Not sure how this makes it brilliant, only that it does.

Ryan Pitchfork, Sunday, 18 January 2004 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

53. Jimmy Edgar - Access Rhythm (Warp)

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 18 January 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

56. Sean Paul f/ Sasha - "I'm Still In Love With You"

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 07:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"I'm Still In Love With You" was last year, and actually even older than that.

56. cLOUDDEAD - Dead Dogs Two (Remixed by Boards Of Canada) (Mush/Big Dada)
57. Ludacris - Stand Up (Fatboy Slim Remix) (Def Jam South)
58. Scissor Sisters - Comfortably Numb (Fatboy Extended Mix) (Polydor)
59. Digital Mystiks - Pathways (Big Apple)

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"I'm Still In Love With You" was released as a single in the UK the other week.

60. Liberty X - Everybody Cries
61. Jaga Jazzist - Day

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 25 January 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

in any event, it was a dumb move on my part becaues "I'm Still In Love With You" was already mentioned all the way at the top of the thread.

62. Comp - "Harder"

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 25 January 2004 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

As long as we're not being too discriminating .. (I mean, some of the songs that have been mentioned so far are quite bad in my opinion) ..

63) "Can't Get Enough" - Raghav
Here's a successful mixture of Asian + hip-hop. Take notes, Rishi Rich Project dudes.

64) "Come Clean" - Hilary Duff
Yeah, I like some of them over-produced Matrix songs. so what.

Iam Anonentity, Monday, 26 January 2004 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

J-Kwon: "Tipsy"
This beat is holy.

On a semi-(un)related note, can anyone ID this track I heard on the radio last week: seemed to be Nelly (with Timberlake on the chorus??), mashed up with "Back in Black." Anyone?

RE: Lil Kim & Beyonce
Unfortunately, not so hot. The rmx I pulled off slsk just had Kim talking (annoyingly) over the intro, and otherwise it's just the album version which I loved but am sick of.

Ryan Pitchfork, Monday, 26 January 2004 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Ryan-O - the JT/Nelly side of the mash-up - could it be 'Work It'? Downer about Kim/Beyonce tho'.

"More more more Ewan Pearson plz!"

Working on album while living in Berlin, imminent release of Ratpure remix on next single within next couple months. Feel it!

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 29 January 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

'Toxic' is a definite '04 top 10 contender. Love the video too.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 29 January 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

It's definitely "Work It". I DL'd the original today to see and that was it, but for the life of me, I can't find the mashup online, even though all the radio stations obv. have it (I've heard it here quite a few times in the past week, and found it listed on another station's website playlist). I definitely don't think it's GHP, and the weird thing is, it doesn't SEEM to be a mashup, because the guitar part is pretty clearly a karaoke-like re-recording.

That said...

Tussle: "Don't Stop"
Ratatat: "17 Years"
Seachange: "Glitterball"

and-uh, "Murda Murda" seconded.

Ryan Pitchfork, Friday, 30 January 2004 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Ryan - respond to the e-mail I sent you about Tussle you layabout!!

scott pl. (scott pl.), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

ryan pfork otm re: "tipsy"

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone w/ info on some remixes / bootlegs of Ms. Keys' "U Don't Know My Name"? One mixes the vocals w/ TLC's "Waterfalls", and one sets the vocals to a little reggae beat. I adore both, and would like to place them on this list, but I don't know their name(s)! And it feels like YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH! Don't let me miss this good thing, please.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i find this thread distasteful.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 30 January 2004 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 30 January 2004 05:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 31 January 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone w/ info on some remixes / bootlegs of Ms. Keys' "U Don't Know My Name"?

If you speak Dutch, this is a hilarious "version".

82. Kylie Minogue - Red Blooded Woman

It's so much better than "Slow"!

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Spektrum - Kinda New (+ Tiefschwarz remixes)

I've only seen the 12" with the remixes. Has the orginal version been released as well?

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a limited 7" with the 1st 200 copies of the 12" with the single edit and b-side 'Interfearance'. I feel like a Mo' Wax collector just saying that - oh wait...
Anyway, I ordered one from Rough Trade but I have no way of verifying whether I got the 7" with it b/c I'm in an entirely diffrent country! Actually, I'll e-mail them because if I didn't get the extra record, they should have knocked it off the price.

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

83. Technically a 2003 release, but it must be released somewhere in the world this year, and it's so great... Caparezza- Fuori Dal Tunnel

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

84. Benny Benassi Presents The Biz - 'No Matter What You Do'
PS - this has a remix by Cagedbaby, who made one of '03's best singles on Southern Fried named 'Star'/'Berlin'. I was the only one who bought it but this dude's a brilliant motherf*cker. Check him out, he shoudl release more this year too.

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 7 February 2004 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

87. George Michael - Amazing
88. Holly Valance - Desire (assuming it hasn't been canned)

Caparezza - Fuori Dal Tunnel

There must be something we can do to make everyone in this bitch love this song, Dom. Possibly mentioning it in every thread would be a good start.

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 7 February 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

So does anyone know what that newish Lil Jon (?) single with the bizarre ragtime-crunk chorus is? Unfortunately I don't remember any lyrics ): Whatever it is, it's hotttttt

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Saturday, 7 February 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

The Beta Band: Assessment
J.O.Y.: Sun Plus (DFA Remix)
and-- Sleepy Brown [ft. Outkast]: I Can't Wait--

although... is it just me or is Andre getting awfully pretentious?

Ryan Pitchfork, Sunday, 15 February 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Liz Phair's "Extraordinary" is on the radio quite a bit. If I don't get forget it might make my top ten next year. It's like "Brass In Pocket" with more lyrical detail.

Is "Tipsy" the song where they're saying (or at least I thought they were saying) "Irv Gotti's getting tits in the club?"

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 15 February 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

93. Rapture: Love Is All
94. Simple Kid: Truck On

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 15 February 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

98) Ferry Corsten - Rock Your Body Rock
99) Fatman Scoop - It Takes Scoop (FUCK. ALL. Y'ALL.)
100) LFO & Aphex Twin - Simon From Sydney

Lemme clarify Simon From Sydney. I am aware it came out several years ago now. However, it's the tune in the new VW Golf advert. It's amazing. It must be released as a single, please...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

FS came across as really affable in Wes' typically cretinous interview with him. I'll have to give the song another listen next week, as I'm not sold on it yet.

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 15 February 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

101. Janet Jackson - Love Me For A Little While

Skull-crushingly awesome, this is.

Nick H (Nick H), Sunday, 15 February 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

102) No Doubt - Bathwater - it's the new Take Me Out!

Re: Scoop - he does seem like a genuinely lovely bloke, who has no idea why he's a pop star, but he is and he loves it. Also, loved his comment about 'always being original'. To Wes. Yeah.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"Bathwater" is great but it's like 3 or 4 years old!

102. Nature's Problem f/ Lil Flip - "That Ain't Nothin'"
103. Red Dot & Backland f/ Bone Crusher - "Not Say Nothin'"

Baltimore/dirty south collabos!

Aye, but it's been remixed and reworked and it's getting released over here in the near future.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 February 2004 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Tico Tico - very right on the Franz Ferdinand song.

The whole first part with 'I'm just a crosshair' was fine and then they just went and ruined it all.

JesusMaryChain, Sunday, 15 February 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Bathwater is hands-down the best thing No Doubt have ever done. I haven't heard the new mix though.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 16 February 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

115. Will Young - Friday's Child

I believe this is the next UK single, and it's ACES! Utterly superb pure pop with almost a "This Guy's In Love With You" feel to it. Like the current spate of Emma singles, only kinda contempo.

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Monday, 16 February 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

110. Outkast ft. Sleepy Brown - The Way You Move

You guys do realize this is 2004

djdee2005, Monday, 16 February 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

It's coming out as a single in the UK next month.

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Monday, 16 February 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

March 22 to be exact.

"Friday's Child" - the nine-minute epic which culminates in a FLUTE SOLO - as a single? Well, well. I hope there is no radio edit. I'd've chosen "Free" or "Your Game" myself.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 16 February 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope there's a radio edit, if only cuz can you imagine Radio 1 playing a 9-minute record (apart from one of the "specialty" shows, I mean)? If "Leave Right Now" - which I find a fabulous ballad, as such things go - can make #1, "Friday's Child" MUST.

And I'm with you, Alex - I hope both of those you mentioned are future singles, especially "Your Game."

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Monday, 16 February 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

116. "sorry 2004" ruben studdard. it always seems to come on the radio at the moment that i am vulnerable to it. that might be what makes it great?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 06:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Your Game is the next single, and has been known as such for a while. It was certainly the standout on first listen to the album and should definitely be #1. The video's airing now, I think. Free is definitely an obvious single - but Love Is A Matter of Distance is showing up on one European chart (can't remember which?) so that might get put out too.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 07:37 (twenty-one years ago)

117. Singing Sonia - "Anita Dick"

- worst name pun in pop since Ebenezer Goode!

(I am not sure this is the best anything but fuck it have you seen some of the other things on this thread??)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Please tell me that Bucci Bag track samples Itchy & Scratchy in The Simpsons

All Bunged Up. (Jake Proudlock), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Leki's new single is good. She's Ya Kid K's sister. The single = Basement Jaxx minus the carnival veneer.

Tali - Lyric on My Lip

Stijn - Sex Junkie

nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

what's the leki song called?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Ronan, I only heard it once to be fair, but c'mon, the original took its time on you too, man.

124. Timbaland and Magoo - Indian Flute (blowin' up all over Ghana as I type)

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

125. Bosson - A Little More Time
126. Weeping Willows - Stairs

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

That Timbaland and Magoo thing - I'm not sure...well, it's OK to the end when it goes a bit Sly Stone. Missy Elliott seems to think "Miss Demeanour" is a funny epithet. Sorry, it's a crap epithet.

All Bunged Up. (Jake Proudlock), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not, strictly speaking, an epithet, either.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 19 February 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh, ignore previous comment. I will read posts correctly before responding etc etc etc.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 19 February 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm very disappointed by that new Natasha Thomas single. :(

127. Tube & Berger - Straight Ahead (Geradeaus)

128. Bellini - Tutti Frutti
fucked if i know whose bright idea was it to release a silly novelty summer tune about cocktails in february. the chorus is lazy and a bit crap, but i've convinced myself that in the context of the tune it is a positive thing (haha, poptimist to the core baby!!)

do singles from the tail-end of 2003 count? coz Jessica Simpson's "With You" is just wonderful.

Mind Taker, Thursday, 19 February 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Re NT, you've got to love Ace of Base first, I reckon. Well, I'm playing the buggering thing non stop, all five mixes. I'm dancing, I'm laughing. I know I will go off it soon at this rate; no sign of that happening yet. It's like a toffee apple and as pure as Couperin.

All Bunged Up. (Jake Proudlock), Thursday, 19 February 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

127. Tube & Berger - Straight Ahead (Geradeaus)

149. J-Five - Modern Times

Trust me on this one, just find it. It's charting in France at the moment, a fun hip-hop single bigging up the filmic work of Charlie Chaplin.

It was on CDUK Hotshots yesterday, so I presume a release is imminent. She does this mental fall-down thing in the dance routine. She also appears to be trying to look like Beyonce.

172. Surferosa - Lucky Lipstick

How does this compare to "Neon Commando" and the indecently ace "Saturday Night"? I eagerly await their album.

178. Scissor Sisters - Take Your Mama

How does this compare to "Neon Commando" and the indecently ace "Saturday Night"?

No idea as I haven't heard them yet... I will d/l as soon as soulseek stops killing my elderly, cantankerous computer. The b-sides are called "Long Lust" and "Bim Bam Boom", though, and both are fantastic! It's all a bit like Sahara Hotnights as produced by Max Martin.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick, the Surferosa album is absolutely brilliant from start to finish. I've been listening to it for ages now. It's been out for yonks, but it's just been repackaged with Saturday Night added.

The best track is "Chinese Moon" so get that if you see it.

Sasa, Tin & Kedzo - 365

Must reinforce this. Fantastic single. Also should have mentioned these on here yonks ago:

204. The Mo - Nostalgia Locomotive
205. Singuila - C'est Trop
206. TM Revolution - Albiero
207. M-Flo Loves Boa - The Love Bug

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Mind Taker already mentioned it but it was buried in his list so KELIS - TRICK ME

Dave M. (rotten03), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

208. Tarkan - Dudu
209. Cortez vs X-Ray feat. Lemon Juice - What U Get Is What U C

"What U Get Is What U C" is quite... bizzare. the sort of bass pulse that hasn't been heard since the mid-nineties glory days of eurodance, sleazy rapping in terrible yet totally amusing spanish-inflected english that's so mind-bendingly awful, it's like nothing you've ever heard before, and then comes along the huuuuge La Bouche-like chorus! there's an ogg of it in the hip hop/R%B section of sample.b6.to, if you're interested. i think that european hip-pop is just starting to get really interesting. there ain't a record in this world that sounds like One-T + Cool-T's "The Magic Key", but that might change soon. hopefully.

Mind Taker, Tuesday, 23 March 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, maybe not EXACTLY La Bouche, but somewhere along those lines anyway.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

193. Kelis - Trick Me

Excellent, she's sucessfully fought off the pressure to release "Millionaire" and cash in on the "Hey Ya!" fallout. "Trick Me" is twattingly good. I wuv Dallas Austin.

210. Kim Locke - 8th World Wonder
211. The Streets - Fit But You Know It
212. Spray - Child Of The 80s (this is brilliant post-modern Eurothump. Get. Now.)

Did I read that right?

Nick H (Nick H), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, it's the version that's being released in mainland Europe. I've never heard the original, but this one basically sounds like... Bubba shouting over a Blink 182 track. Moshalicious.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Out of the songs that are actually from 2003, I agree that about 12 of them should be on here.

Shit, I meant to write 2004.

Out of the songs that are actually from 2004, I agree that about 12 of them should be on here.

"196. The Rapture - I Need Your Love (Ewan's Friends With Girls Mix)"

I listened to this at the record store - it's epic!!! At first it sounds like Ewan's gone all disco-house, but really this goes all over the place, constantly moving between frigid electro and sensuous disco like ripples in a pond. And of course it's just wonderfully wonderfully layered. But the big surprise is at the end when it suddenly switches to soca!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

He also does another fab but more typical mix called the "Stay in School Mix".

217) The Zutons - Pressure Point

I am going to be immensely disappointed by this band when I actually hear their album, but for now, I have quite the crush on their saxophonist. And the songs sound right enough an' all...

261. Westside Connection- Gangsta Nation

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 15 April 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Best thing about Wee Kev's new single - he does an acronym:

K is for the kisses I give to you
E is for everything I do
V is for the visits I'd visit you, baby, you know that
I is for the way you inspire me
N is for how nasty, sexually, we can be, baby, yeah!

279. Ghostface featuring Jadakiss - "Run"

JoB (JoB), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

haha job i hope that was unintentional

i am almost certain it's utter drek, but it's FUNNY drek, which this year might be enough.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

It was unintentional, but it was a funny coincidence. And Ghostface deserves to be on this list, even though he really should do a "Chicken Run" remix.

JoB (JoB), Monday, 19 April 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

<EM>Ooh, I've been wanting hear this! I'm afraid I will be disappointed, though.</EM>

Actually, it's pretty good. It's very light, soft pop, but no more so than, say, "Thank You For the Music".

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 2 May 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

what the hell to does that last song sound like, wbs?

btw the acid-y noise on the verses of "in the park" sounds a lot like a squelchified "party to damascus" hook

343. Chingy - One Call Away
344. Florence Joy - Consequence Of Love*
345. N.E.R.D. - Maybe**
346. Kylie - Chocolate

* (despite the awful fake smile in the video)
** (sounds much better on MTV than in the context of that wretched album of theirs)

plus - i've just noticed, strange but true, that no-one on this thread has mentioned:
348. Norah Jones - Sunrise!!

Mind Taker, Saturday, 5 June 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

somehow i've skipped 347! which is kinda handy, cos i also like:

347. Armand Van Helden feat. Spalding Rockwell - Hear My Name

it's not blindingly brilliant or anything, but at least it sounds like articulate work of a somewhat sane person, which could have hardly been said for "Ghandi Khan".

Mind Taker, Saturday, 5 June 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Taker - what's the Jentina thing like? We're apparently about to be hit by a wave of new British female MC's (CD:UK sez so), and she's supposedly up the front...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 5 June 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i must admit i've heard it only once, but i liked it instantly - struck me like something halfway between MIA (the Galang one) and Princess Superstar. faintly trip-hoppy beat. apparently it's "Video of the week" on MTV Hits. they've also started showing the new Girls Aloud video, of which i only caught the last 20 seconds, bah!

Mind Taker, Saturday, 5 June 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Rachel Stevens and Richard X, please fricking leak!

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Sunday, 6 June 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

damn right, i'm desperate to hear "Some Girls"!

349. Alcazar - This Is The World We Live In
it's... it's... a mashup!!! sort of. "Upside down" loop (a mere month after Kevin Lyttle used it on his album) + Genesis "Land Of Confusion" vox in the chorus + Alcazar doin' their thang = irresistible, really

Mind Taker, Sunday, 6 June 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Mind Taker, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

359: Rachel Stevens - Some Girls
It's leaked! It's great! Rachel Stevens: shuffletech's ambassador to pop, or pop's ambassador to shuffletech? This isn't just about the groove though - Rachel sounds wonderfully silly, and there's these great Wicked Witch of the West Henchmen groans running through the arrangement.

Re: 258. Britney's going with 'Outrageous' as her next jam cause it's been added to the Catwoman s/t. It's worth mentioning b/c it grows on you, R Kelly does b-vox and the middle-8 is fembot bliss.

If I ever meet Richard X, I want to call him a "Wicked Witch of the West Hench".

SINGLE OF THE FUCKING YEAR

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 25 June 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Basically, imagine "Walk This Way" if Aerosmith were some nearly dead Italian bobbysox crooner gone "rock e roll", and Run DMC were a gay Eurohouse act.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 25 June 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, is that the song you were telling me about, Dom? Coz I'd only heard the remix which made it sound like Zombie Nation. The normal mix of it is genius, you are quite correct.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 25 June 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently it's an Eiffel 65 cover, which makes it even better.

Dom, Gabry Ponte is in Eiffel 65, so that's a bit odd.

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 26 June 2004 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually there is a (not nearly as good) Eiffel 65 version with different vocals, part of them in english. It's pretty amazing how those Italians get so much mileage out of such an extremely limited template.

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 18 July 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

DOTR are back, and have been back for a few months now, but I only got the album recent like. I do love it and them very much though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 18 July 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Good heavens.

Begs2Differ - uh, I don't know. The record I mean is the new Twista single (new in't uk, that is) where he samples that 'just one look at you / and I know it's going to be / a lovely day' song off the old Tetley ads and raps moderately fast about how money is pretty neat. It might be called 'lovely day', I guess.

cis (cis), Sunday, 18 July 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

No it's called "Sunshine". Which is odd because I can't remember sunshine being referenced once in either the hook or the raps.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 18 July 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

okay, yeah, you guys are correct, i just haven't heard it as a single over here yet, and that lil flip song is also called that. my bad. the other anthony hamilton-using singles over here are jada's 'why' and the angie stone one.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Sunday, 18 July 2004 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

429. Anastacia- Sick and Tired.

It sounds like that one Dismemberment Plan song. Only, you know, good.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 19 July 2004 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sick And Tired" is absolutely mental. The Bollywood sample in the middle of a soft-rock 80s power ballad, wtf?!

430. Marques Houston ft. Twista - Dirty Dancin'

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 19 July 2004 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

439. Technical Itch ft MC Jakes - Pressure Drop (Kryptic Minds Remix)
440. Liquid Overdose - Ancient Space

403. Royal Gigolos- California Dreaming

This would be so much better if it had just that bassline and the cut-up vocal snippets and not the breakdown with the full vocals.

458. Whigfield - Was A Time

she's back! and she's gone... schaffel!!

Mind Taker, Thursday, 5 August 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

To some of us, Whigfield never really went away...
(puts MP3 of "Gimme Gimme" on and pretends it's 1996 again...)

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 5 August 2004 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

That Whigfield tune is fantastic! Sounds like a schaffel remix of "Rendez-Vu"...and luckily, all mixes of this tune are also available as instrumentals.

474. The Servant- Orchestra

This song may be rubbish, but at the moment I like it. European (French, I think?) nu-indie take on "Big In Japan".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

So's 'Leave (Get Out)'. She looked like a dwarf on TRL.

re: 332 - The Janet is so on point.

Barima, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

you're right Dom, "Orchestra" is rubbish! thankfully only Hit Channel plays it so i have no problem avoiding it.

475. Paps'n'Skar - Mirage (La Luna)
476. Mando Diao - Paralyzed
477. Lil' Flip feat. Lea - Sunshine

i've finally heard 404, and indeed it's worth all the praise. Richard X producing other people = totally classic!

Mind Taker, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Mylo - Musclecar (freeform mix) was at 304
And Kelis 'Trick Me' was at 193

Which puts us at 475: Villalobos - Easy Lee (Smith N Hack Remix)
476: Ferenc - Cronch

Michael Dieter, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i hate the original Easy Lee

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Musclecar might be from 2003 too, if you want to get technical.

Michael, the remix is from this year.

The new Dizzee single is class, as is the new Prodigy (watched 'em on MTV last night, along with a vid for 'Drop The Pressure', not so coincidentally).

Dizzee - what you expect now that he's been hanging out with blingers in the US, spent a little more on clothes and been fattened up a bit by his mum.

Prodge - In. Sane.

Mylo - gets off with his bird in a caravan. Caravan explodes. The moral of the story?

489. Luca Dirisio- Calma E Sangue Freddo

OK, so my new love is guitar driven European radio pop. If Luca Dirisio was English, he'd be in Razorlight or something shit like that. However, he instead sounds like someone trying far too hard to prove he can sing over an old Police tune.

that Winehouse song is no worse than 'These Words' for sure, but can you explain the title?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

It's as in 'fuck me shoes', and it's much better than These Words - it's Footballers' Wives set to R&B!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I must concur that Fuck Me Pumps is genius. Even if the rest of her album isn't very good, that one song is.

507. Amy Winehouse – “Pumps (Mylo Remix)” even better!

uh... did he ever not? I've just got a promo single with him on. It's really really good.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 5 September 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

weird as far as I know he's not on the original. it's a little bit old maybe they recorded a new version with him. I love the original!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 5 September 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never heard the original! Odd, I'd never heard any Freeform Five until this week and now I've heard this and "Strangest Things", they're both excellent... and I've just bought the Bjork and Dizzee albums so there my interest must end.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 5 September 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

There is a nice M.A.N.D.Y. remix of "Strangest Things" if you ever get round to it. Alot of the Freeform Five stuff is nice actually, though it's all sort of odd. Nice remix of Muscle Cars by Mylo too.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 5 September 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The Ultimate Dilemma double 10" Freeform put out was a disappointment, though.

I don't feel so inclined to stick their version of I'll Stand By You in this thread, although it is perfectly fine and everything as theoretical means-to-end (cover-y ballad for Children In Need to finally give them that apparently "all-important" second number one, although when it fails to get to number one the whole thing may be left looking a little rubbish and lazy and ill-conceived)
