M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The purpose of this thread is to keep a tally of what's gone undone/unclaimed, and to have the requests in easy alphabetical format in case anyone wants to claim them. Just holler on this thread if you take one up. thanks.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Melissa Marchant is taken

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Umm, I just did it...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm working on the Rough Guide to Motorik, will finish it when I get home tonight.

willem (willem), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i tried to do Non-English Language UK Top 10 Hits but could only think of three last night (despite us coming up with at least double that in the pub last week)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I know you just did it, that's why I said it was taken.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

but I should've waited for you to, apologies

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

It was just so quick, you fooled me... Cheers.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, I won't do that again. just happy I finally got all that data into something manageable!

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

just happy I finally got all that data into something manageable!

for which you deserve an ovation!

willem (willem), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

thank heavens for WordPad

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Rough Guide to the Durutti Column please

fcussen (Burger), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Some rough guides I'd like to hear:

Chicago soul
Muscle Shoals
Shibuya kei
Visual kei

High hosannas to all who have contributed to this fascinating thread, and to Matos for keeping track.

briania, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

RG to Japanese Koto (pref. the 'pop' years)

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to see a Specials/Special AKA/Fun Boy 3/Terry Hall projects one.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Was there a Two-Tone Records one yet?

Michael B, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

free jazz!

ryan kuo (ryan kuo), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

if anybody could do :

Dem 2
God Is My Co-Pilot
Bis

. . .

etc, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Scott Woods took care of the Beach Boys ripoff RG...? And I THINK one of Tom's lists covered the "77-82 Brit art pop" thing, albeit under a different heading.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, mine was New Pop, which pretty much kicks off in 81-82 and goes on till the mid-late 80s - 77-82 Brit Art Pop would be something different I'm guessing.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll do chart jazz when I have a few minutes.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Chart Jazz! Two worlds collide!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

how about Grace Jones?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Chart jazz is up (it's kind of interesting to see it go from the time when it WAS the same world to the 'freak hit' period).

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll post a Phil Spector RG sometime in the next couple of hours ...

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Scott Woods took care of the Beach Boys ripoff RG...?

Nah, but I'm sort of working on one (4 or 8 songs shy, depending on whether I go with the 4 minute or 22 minute version of "Autobahn").

s woods, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm DYING to hear a female rappers RG (tim? minna?)

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd love to tackle the 808 beats RG but where would do you start??? that'd be like trying to do the RG to guitar!!!

(egyptian lover ---> model 500 ---> masta ace inc. ---> ???)

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I did an "Outsider" music one. It's not very good, but it is there.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I just done an Elton John RG. Will post a France Gall tomorrow.

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd love to tackle the 808 beats RG but where would do you start???

This was my vague suggestion...I guess I was thinking "classic" - i.e., mostly early uses, mostly electro, only '80s. Something broader than that would be cool too.

s woods, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Yo Mark P! What the f******** f*** ***sh*** is 77-82 Brit artpop?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I can take care of the Alice Coltrane one later tonight when i get home from work

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll do Two Tone this afternoon.

-Colin

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Old school rap is done.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

david i was thinking stuff like fad gadget, associates, the normal, etc with eventual crossover into human league territory

more emphasis on the esoteric and the 'arty' (bad word i know) than straight out synth-pop though

so kinda like new wavey proto-synthpop arthouse marginalia?!

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Non-English Language Top Ten Hits - currently we're on ten. Trouble is, Germany does not seem that proud of the Obernkirchen Children's Choir...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Ahhhh. I was thinking more that you meant the Big Flame / Ron Johnson tip, which emphasize/d the 'arty' (yeah, bad word, but what you gonna do?) and the 'qwertyuiop', which is why I thought Tom's Entryism RG covered that. Much obliged for the clarification, Mark P.

So, yeah, someone get on that, OK thx.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

But Julio Iglesias might just be about to put me on eleven...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio's being awkward, but The Singing Nun has put us on eleven. Aiming for about fourteen.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

can you print what you've got so far? add Desireless 'Voyage Voyage' if you haven't already

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I really want something in either Spanish or German. Maybe Portuguese... got it!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Spanish = Macarena

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Not counting that, as it has English bits.

I have got Spanish and Portuguese. German is proving troublesome.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Currently on fourteen, but almost half of them are French. Want more variety.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

closest you'll get is Falco i fear

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

You have Jordy on there, I hope?

Didn't Abba release non-English versions of hits, or would including those types of singles in the list constitute cheating?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Jordy wasn't a top ten hit

'Mundian Te Bach Ke'!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve - got.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

bugger this guessing game then

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, if my last hope for Germany doesn't come together, I'll put it up anyhow.

I am well pleased with the Portuguese one.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Done.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

hello, I got your email Matos, and I am working on the SG and the FG ones.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

It should be stressed that ppl should do already done ones again. Much as I like Otis and think his revisionist Hi-NRG comp is very interesting, I don't want it to be the only one on the books!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i can do a Bis one

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

yay!

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

well i think multiples are a bad idea unless the initial one is totally nonsensical - but i assume Tom wants a Hi-NRG dance one to go with his handbag and piano?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

RG to Motorik is done & posted.

willem (willem), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Well OK how about this - if you're doing a duplicate RG you can't include any of the same tracks? Certainly I think single artists don't deserve multiple RGs but there's plenty of genres where there's room for more/deeper/shallower excavation.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I can do the Grace Jones, as well as Prince 90s ho!

Jedmond, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

can't believe no one's requested Sun Ra yet, so I will

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I did the Muscle Shoals one, just in case that information's of any use to anyone. Ever.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Foreign Lang:

Las Ketchup - Ketchup song (asereje)
continuing.. Why not make a separate thread with done so far?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The Ketchup Song that hit the charts was the english-language version.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The chorus (repeated makes up 80% of the song) is spanish, allegedly, and about 1/3 of the verses are too.

A nice translation website translated:

asereje ja de je de jebe tu de jebere seibiunouva,
majavi an de bugui an de buididipi

into

asereje ha of je of rubber your of jebere seibiunouva, majavi go of bugui go of buididipi

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway, bonafide one:

Kyu Sakamoto, Sukiyaki

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Further requests:

- él records
- Louis Philippe
- Marc Almond, cover versions sung by (NED!)

Also, I second Terry Hall. Could try to do one myself, but am not familiar with Vegas or that recent Mushtaq collab.

OleM (OleM), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The Ketchup Song that hit the charts was the english-language version
Depends which charts you're talking about - the version that was a hit in Belgium was in Spanish (with poss a bit of French thrown in).

German: how about Trio? or Kraftwerk even (7" of 'Autobahn')?

Jeff W (zebedee), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

- Marc Almond, cover versions sung by (NED!)

I bet Ned does a FIERCE version of "Sex Dwarf" after a few 40s.

Rough Guide Requests (Quality Control OFF):
- George Martin productions
- songs that want to be George Martin productions
- detuning
- fandom

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I could do a free jazz, sun ra, no wave and maybe a concrete one but I'm so damn busy that it might be a while.

I'll try and do free jazz one on saturday.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I bet Ned does a FIERCE version of "Sex Dwarf" after a few 40s.

Ahem.

I will ponder the request and post tonight or something. (I'm actually not really checking this thread so you'll have to wave or shout or something to get my attention.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone going to do a Rough Guide to Contemporary J-Pop? Heard some stuff by a couple of girls called Hal Cali and loved it. They were on that Adam and Joe programme and my mate has bought a load of their stuff on import. Other suggestions would be appreciated.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I did a J-Pop 96-01 RG on the initial thread.

pudding (js williams), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, a request for the rough guide to pitchshifted/chipmunk vocals.

pudding (js williams), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd appreciate a Surf Guitar one please.
(up to and including Man or Astroman, ie 50s to present day if possible)

MikeB, Wednesday, 21 January 2004 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Stooges Fun House Box Set Rough Guide
Pet Sounds Sessions Box Set Rough Guide

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Pet Sounds Sessions Box Set Rough Guide

my rough guide: the vocals disc is all you need.

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I have the sampler for that one, but the funhouse box sampler eluded my grasp several tries.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

um, how about just the Pet Sounds and Fun House albums for those?

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, this is starting to get a little ridiculous, don't you think?

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

(haha the Rough Guide to outtakes nobody but obsessives and completists need)

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

not really, i love both albums and would be eager to hear the best alternate takes/tracking elements without having to spend the $60-$750 for the boxes.

i like your binary b/w logic though... you either like the album itsself or you're a completist obsessive! hurray, you're the new nabisco.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I want some country RGs please! - maybe by decade 40s - 00s would be a nice start. Also Dolly, Tammy, G. Jones? And a 'countrypolitan' one though I've no idea if this term even exists outside of a Dave Marsh book I read.

An idea I had for an RG or Top 100 - RG to blatant bandwagon jump cash-ins that were actually good! Somebody did this with disco bandwagon jumpers but every movement has its chancers...

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

'countrypolitan' = there's pretty good new comp out called "country got soul". i don't know if it's the rough guide that a fan would produce - it's a bit on the obscure/dusty side of things. but i'm really enjoying it anyway.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

that's right, because anyone who smells obsessive completism in vanity outtakes boxes is automatically a b/w binarist! you're a genius!

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

also, if I'm 1/3 as brilliant as Nabisco I'll count myself very lucky indeed

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

where can i see the index thing - has it dissappeared?

i want to do a Matthew Herbert one but not sure if it has been done yet.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

index: http://base58.com/ilx/ilmroughguide.html -- down at the moment but that's probably temporary

no one's done Herbert--go to it!

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

And a 'countrypolitan' one though I've no idea if this term even exists outside of a Dave Marsh book I read.

"Countrypolitan" is just Chet Atkins/Billy Sherill Nashville sound. My Early-Mid 60s Nasvhile RG covers a buncha this stuff.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 22 January 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Done George Jones.

Right, so 'classical' has been requested several times, and i want to take a bash at it but for the sweet love of jesus, how?
Anyone want to give me an idea of how they think it should be done, and i'll see if i can.

pete s, Thursday, 22 January 2004 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

And if you're interested Tico i could have a go at country-rock.

pete s, Thursday, 22 January 2004 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i wouldn't mind seeing a rough guide to Shinohara Tomoe.

ryan kuo (ryan kuo), Thursday, 22 January 2004 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Just did Redd Kross.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 22 January 2004 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I could do a Chet Baker one if anyone cares.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 22 January 2004 05:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I care!

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 22 January 2004 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for G Jones! I know my way around country-rock a bit more but I still think an RG would be good. I'm more interested in country-country rather than the -rock or -alt kinds, if that makes sense.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 22 January 2004 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

devil music

Already nicely done here, although not quite the ultimate "devil music through the ages".

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 22 January 2004 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

NEW JACK SWING PLEASE!

Semi-obvious inclusions:
- Ice-T - "New Jack Hustler"
- Bobby Brown - "Every Little Step"
- Johnny Gill - "Rub You the Right Way"
- BBD, old R. Kelly, "Rumpshaker"?, Toni Braxton
- obscurities & curios welcome (duh)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 22 January 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

RE: The stooges fun house sessions.

I tried this already, the problem is how do you cram representative alternate takes of an album into one CD? I did do a minidisc 'selection' but I can't remember which ones I picked.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 22 January 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

ah, thanks for the attempt mark. no worries. i was hoping someone could highlight the key tracks that were very unusual and possibly better than the album cuts (eg, the "god only knows" sung by brian that ends in the acapella).

(and thanks for being brave enough to stand up against the rough guide security guard).

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

God, I wish someone would issue that George Jones record.

Not That Chuck, Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i wouldn't mind seeing a rough guide to Shinohara Tomoe.

DONUT BITCH TO THREAD!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
What about a rough guide to Schranz? Siegbran? Anyone?

j4n (Wintermute), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

How about very local guides, to show the rest of the world. Like the aforementioned German Rare Groove. Other example: Rough Guide to Friesche Bries. Including Pigmeat, Lul, It Dockumer Lokaeltsje, Solbakken, Kobus Gaat Naar Appelscha, Trio Hell and other refreshing postpunk/eighties new wave bands from Friesland - a northern part of Holland.

also:
Rough Guide to bay area trash
Rough Guide to Florida death metal

That top list should have included RG to Legendary Pink Dots (probably a boxed set ;-)

Roger T (Roger T), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
SOMEONE DO AUGUST DARNELL (all affiliated projects) PLEASE!! JODY?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 22 July 2005 03:59 (twenty years ago)

Request for RG to Alterna-Pop with digitally enhanced crunchy guitars (in a nu-Liz Phair, Since U Been Gone stylee)

Baaderonixx cancels each other out (Fabfunk), Friday, 22 July 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

I really loved the RG to JPop (1996-2001), has anyone done a more recent one?

temeraire (r h), Friday, 22 July 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

Rough guide to MF Doom? And how does one request the actual disc then? (Pardon my ignorance).

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Friday, 22 July 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

Rough Guide To Maoist Punk

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Rough Guide To Slutsky

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Saturday, 23 July 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)
