johnny i have both 'versions' of the iron & wine. the one with the tracklisting i posted sounds bright and properly recorded and the jezebel one sounds of a lesser quality fidelity-wise than even creek/cradle, leading me to believe it's a collection of pre-subpop four-track demos

Antics is still only in mono as far as I know.

Simon H., Friday, 16 July 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't notice that Antics wasn't in stereo. That must be part of why I like the sound so much - I could tell that something was slightly off, that must've been it.

...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - Worlds Apart (no track titles)

Simon H., Wednesday, 22 September 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, that Trail of Dead album, at least what I've heard of it (first 4 tracks) is such a departure, in a disappointing way. It's a lot more just...pop than I thought it would be. I mean, that single, Worlds Apart, seems like it could be a Hold Steady song (not that that's a horrible thing in itself). But not at all what I expected this album would sound like when people were talking about the set they played at Siren fest or wherever in the summer.

Kevin H (Kevin H), Thursday, 23 September 2004 05:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe what I got was not the real album. I'm praying it wasn't.

Kevin H (Kevin H), Thursday, 23 September 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 23 September 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 23 September 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

That was a nice analysis on your blog, Yancey. I couldn't believe it when I heard it- you're right though, it does seem like a career-killer.

Kevin H (Kevin H), Thursday, 23 September 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Has the new Nas leaked yet?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 23 September 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Piscesboy - I worship "The Holy Bible" and "Everything Must Go" (well, not REALLY but I like the way that phrase sounded.. they're both great albums though!), like enough of the first two albums to say that yes, they're generally good and think roughly half of TIMTTMY is quite serviceable. Know Your Enemy was absolutely rubbish, of course. Perhaps I will start another thread for Lifeblood.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 24 September 2004 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

:|, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, Disciples Of The 36 Chambers leaked, but I can only find it as one big continuous mp3. Not sure if the cd is like that, or if that was just the promo. The commercial release is this week. It's really great, I'll probably buy it.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

the mp3 leak i found came with a cue file, so i'm guessing the cd isn't like that.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry to go off topic but how the hell do you use those cue files anyway

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

a .cue file needs to have an accompanying .bin file. you can use these to burn a perfect disc image in nero or roxio or whatever, and if you like, you can then rip the tracks from that disc. it's a bit of work, but sometimes it makes more sense for continuous mixes cause a disc image means you get tracks blending seamlessly into each other as they do on the original.

Michael B, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The U2 album I've seen floating around, labelled as the new one, is actually a bunch of the demos from Achtung Baby.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

If anyone gets the real U2 album, please notify me asap! I have to write an essay about the "new U2" by Friday, and it's kinda hard to do that only having heard the one song.

Mercury Rev - Secret Migration
Red Sparowes - At The Soundless Dawn

Ramon D, Tuesday, 2 November 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Surely the new U2 must be leaking any day now, right? I have two shoddy live mp3s of "City Of Blinding Lights" and "All Because Of You," and I'm very excited to hear the rest of it now.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

the low record is different but not that different. there's more big rock guitar (by low standards) than they've had. several songs have riffs. it's kind of a natural progression from "trust", with some tempos up a little bit. production isn't that different from albini. it's a new low album and i'm very happy.

dan (dan), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

More details on the Gonzales Solo Piano thing, please!
Is it actually him and a piano? I loved his cover of 'One More Time' in that vein, so my interest has been piqued...

LCD Soundsystem - 'LCD Soundsystem'

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it actually him and a piano?

Yeah. He retired from pop music last year, and now he put out this classical album. It's just him playing the piano, no accompaniment, no overdubs, no nothing. But it's great! Even my grandma likes it! If you go to his official website http://www.gonzalespiano.com you'll (over the coming months) be able to access the sheet music to all the songs. I've been seriously considering buying an actual piano simply to learn these songs. IT'S THAT GOOD!!

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 1 December 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"He retired from pop music last year"

Didn't he already retire from rap? What's next for him after he retires from classical?

MADVILLAINY | FOUR TET & MF DOOM
“Madvillainy” has made the best of 2004 lists in ROLLING STONE, SPIN, GQ and the year-end lists in ALLMUSIC, AMAZON.COM, XLR8R, PITCHFORK, and several other villainous publications. Props to Exclaim Magazine for naming "Madvillainy" #1 record of the year. Last year we mentioned the MADVILLAIN REMIXES by Four Tet and Koushik. These two EP's were delayed to make way for a last-minute production collab between Four Tet and MF Doom on a “Rhinestone Cowboy” remake. The Madvillainy Remixes will be released in 2005.

I really like the one new Prekop track I've heard, even though the vocal line seems to ape a recent Sea and Cake song (something on Oui, I think).

where is the wolf parade album?

jmeister (jmeister), Sunday, 26 June 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

Supergrass and The Warlocks are out there now, too.

(I don't think I've heard a worse stereotypically "indie rock" album this year than that piece of shit Wolf Parade album... learn to sing!)

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 26 June 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Johnny Fever - "I'll Believe In Anything" proves you are wrong because it is better than the entire Stephen Malkmus record.

Sean M (Sean M), Sunday, 26 June 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Sean, Wolf Parade and Malkmus/Jicks is such an apples and oranges comparison!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 26 June 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

where can i find the wolf parade album?

jmeister (jmeister), Sunday, 26 June 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

Matthew - Yeah, you're right; I was just trying to think of an ""indie rock"" record this year that was worth talking about but that never clicked for me. The competition (Magnolia Electric Co, The Headphones, Andrew Bird, Hood, Patrick Wolf, Josh Rouse, Sufjan Stevens...?) seemed either even more innappropriate or simply pathetic.

It's been a pretty bad year for straight-up "indie" albums, actually... A lot of quite good stuff (Antony/Hangedup/Mountain Goats/Clem Snide/Clap Your Hands/Imogen Heap/New Pornos/Sunset Rubdown/Sons and Daughters/Micah P Hinson), but very little that's actually consistent or great (for me it's the Smog, Final Fantasy, and maybe maybe this Wolf Parade). Obviously that's my personal taste talking, but something tells me that I won't be compelled to listen to many of these ten years from now.

Sean M (Sean M), Sunday, 26 June 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

breezy, Monday, 27 June 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

It's been a pretty bad year for straight-up "indie" albums, actually.

You think? I'm actually sorta amazed that I've found so many indie records that I like a lot this year, because the last couple years were so dry. But then again, it's mostly new work by old favorites.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

Then again, you and me have really different taste in albums (even if we like a lot of the same songs... or at least, i like a bunch of songs you do!) Things like Sleater Kinney of Around the Sun do absolutely nothing for me.

william, it was really nothing (superpopelectro), Friday, 15 July 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

No, I meant that in many cases they don't actually wartermark the promos, they just say they did so as to scare journos or whomever so that they don't leak it.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 15 July 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

The waiting for Goldfrapp and Ladytron is KILLING me!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 22 July 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

It's killing me too! "Supernature" is supposed to be released exactly in one month. Doesn't that mean that it should leak sometime soon? Sometimes I wish albums just came out without any prior notice.

I can understand that. DOn't look at - http://www.soulseduction.com/ whatever you do. God, they get their promos so early! I now have opinions, thoughts, feelings about a couple of records I've been hugely anticipating, based on their little sampler pages.

Trouble is, I could still be way off knowing if they are actually good albums, and will only really know... in SEPTEMBER when they are finally released. GAHHHH.

I gotta claim to be an internet n00b, in that I have no idea how to access the binaries usenet. I've found plenty of other ways in, through google groups or through some random Dutch site, but even then I'm stymied by their talk of .nlz files and etc.

snowballing (snowballing), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

kyle - the only versions i've heard of The Greatest are transcoded/have a radio intro to one of the songs, etc. Are you sure the full-quality final vsn has leaked?

re Belle and Sebastian, I am now looking forward to getting home.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

hahahah gerard the only reason i clicked on this thread was to ask about the new Destroyer. I'm psyched!

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

The Cat Power leaked in 192kbs three weeks ago and the radio intro is obviously part of the album.

Hairy Asshurt (Toaster), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

i thought that radio intro was on the album. (oops xpost)

-- snowballing (snowballin...), November 29th, 2005.

WOAH!

piscesboy, Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

I can say with confidence that there is no radio intro. Also, the version that just leaked is 192, and not a transcode.

The Elected "Sun, Sun, Sun" has leaked

Orson, Wednesday, 30 November 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

what do you mean it's "transcoded"? you mean it's transcoded up from something lower?

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

According to my friend, a lot of people in Vancouver have copies of the new Destroyer album. I've heard two songs - less midi, more Streethawk.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, from the buzz it seems clear that there's a bunch of copies of the new Destroyer out there, but Mr Bejar seems to have given them to the right (ie, honest) people, sadly.

re transcoded - Yes, the previous Cat Power leak (before this week) was a crappy rip made to look like a better one, with weird extras like a radio-show intro, etc.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to put a new Destroyer track on my blog in one second, should be there until I get a cease and desist order, or get skittish and take it off...

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 11 December 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, both the Islands and Destroyer albums open in a very similar fashion - although the Destroyer album is much better. t's criminal to have Jim Guthrie in your band but not let him sing, especially when Nick Diamond is in charge of vocals.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Sunday, 11 December 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

rosej, Sunday, 18 December 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

forget everything you knew about the elected. their new album is awful...nothing like Me First. None of those lovely alt-country flourishes or subtle electronics. utterly dissapointing for an elected fan, been waiting a long time for their follow-up.

Beatles - White Album

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 19:29 (twenty years ago)

Yeah-- I found the new South. I'm still undecided. If you're in the camp (like me) that thinks their debut was light years better than their follow-up, then you might be disappointed. But I'm pressing on and it does get better with every listen. Definitely a low-key New Order vibe on this one, as compared to the loud Coldplay vibe on the last. Only time will tell....

But yeah-- I need the King Biscuit to leak immediately, too.
