What's up with Rhythm & Sound (Basic Channel) releasing seven new singles (as a box set) at once?

I'm taken aback, as they've never been so prolific. In the past we'd be lucky if they even put out more than one or two 12 inches a year. I'm guessing (hoping) this will eventually be put on CD. They've recruited some more great vocalists (Sugar Minott, Willie Williams) like they usually do.

So has anyone heard this or know anything else about it?

!!!!
Exciting, although I feel they're in a bit of a rut with the Rhythm and Sound project.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 9 January 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

where's maurizio when i need him most?

oh maurizio, how i love your music. please come back. i miss you desperately and regularly hope you will continue on your path of rightous tracks.

steph jam, Sunday, 9 January 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

That's not a bad idea. After all, Mr. von Oswald's had eight years to come up with a second bassline. Plenty of time.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 9 January 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

I thought "With The Artists" was fab. I guess if you are holding out for more Heroin-house, you are probably out of luck.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 10 January 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

this box set looks amazing...

martin (martin), Monday, 10 January 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

OK, I've heard it. Every song seems to be based on the "See Mi Yah" riddim, which isn't far removed from yer standard R&S riddim. I guess it wasn't that hard to create all the music for this box set, as all the tracks are versions of one another. The vocals are different in each song though. Overall, it's very much like "With The Artists."

"Exciting, although I feel they're in a bit of a rut with the Rhythm and Sound project."

It's a rut that I still find exciting, thankfully.

i'm a huge maurizio fan but this was just awesome

two months pass...
Praise the Lord, how great is this CD?! maybe overall better than w/ the artists in spite of the fact it doesn't have the greatest tune of the decade on it (that's the Cornell campbell fronted "King on my Empire" obviously).

btw i hear that the 7'box set fetish object is quite a bad pressing so yr probably better off with the CD.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 11 April 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

huh, it hasn't shown up stateside as far as I can tell. Maybe that's why.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

the tracks vary quite a bit sonically though they are all based on that "see mi yah" skank - don't be put off thinking it's the same track 11 times with a different frontman. i can ysi a taster track tomorrow if yr interested.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

Praise the Lord, how great is this CD?!

It's so great that I plan on listening to it
for 24 hours straight.

I haven't listened to the album in weeks so that I don't get burned out on it, but unfortunately, there hasn't been a 24-hour period where I could stay at home and do this and put up with the consequences of sleep deprivation the next day.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

haha, that is great!

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

i'm very happy i crept into your Ilmixor top ten too!

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

i listened to this twice in a row today, barry, and i really would not recommend you going any further than that but i'm interested to see whether you stay sane or not.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

I saw them spin an amazing dubset last weekend in Utrecht (and got the chance to "interview" them the day after. A very nice conversation, though pretty rough to write about afterwards what with the no recording/no quotes rules.)

Omar (Omar), Thursday, 14 April 2005 06:45 (twenty years ago)

i'll most likely get this anyway but a yousendit would be great, jed.

and for anyone that missed this recent thread, there is a great liveset of Scion w/ Tikiman linked:

This is very good/just-about-great record, but I think "With The Artists" has the slight edge on it.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 14 April 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Although I totally understand listening to it for 24 hours. How are they are so succesfull using one riddim for the whole record I'll never know.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 14 April 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

has anyone seen rhythm and sound live before? they're doing two nights here in NYC on monday and tuesday, i'm definitely tempted. it's a little rich ($25) though ... am i foolish to even be debating it?

the flyer said they'd be playing mainly 45's with a bunch of live MC's doing their thing on top.

rajeev (rajeev), Saturday, 16 April 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

yeah, I was wondering the same thing

W i l l (common_person), Saturday, 16 April 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

HOLY FUCK, they're playing Toronto on the 24th but there's no venue listed on their website (http://basicchannel.com/item/Tour2005) and there hasn't been an announcement in any of the papers.

BTW, I'm doing the 24-hour thing right now. I'm five hours in and I'm already going a bit nuts.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 16 April 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

Jeezzz $25...bit pricey. Buttt, if you like roots/dub it's a must. They don't play much of their own tracks (in Utrecht just one) and it's a shame St.Hilaire isn't with them in the US/Canada cause he's really great (they somehow get the mix just right that his voice doesn't jump out of the music and he has great timing (i.e. knows when to shut up)

Omar (Omar), Saturday, 16 April 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

I saw them at the Tresor in Berlin about a month ago. Of course this is their hometown, so they brought along about 5 or 6 of the artists and did an amazing gig - a lot wilder than their records! We should do some work and put those pictures of it online at TechnoTourist.org.

Hans Veneman (veneman), Saturday, 16 April 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

Rhythm and Sound are playing a one off show - their 45 session with paul st. hilaire - live in GLASGOW Saturday 30th April. ticket information on www.glasshousetransmission.com its only £11 and in an acoustically adapted converted church!!! you would be mad to miss this one!! they rock live!

transmission music (transmission), Thursday, 21 April 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

who went to the NYC shows? how were they?

W i l l (common_person), Thursday, 21 April 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm seeing them on Sunday.
Boo. Yah.

When I bought my ticket, I started venting my frustration regarding the late announcement as noted a few posts up. I said that the promoters must have been "asleep at the wheel" for not getting the word out earlier. It turned out that the guy I was talking to is the promoter. Oops. Anyhow, he explained that they didn't announce any info because there was a venue change and they didn't want to have any false info out there, which is completely understandable, of course. Still, I felt bad. My foot didn't taste good.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 21 April 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

Hello there Hans Veneman! Strange to see you in ILM land, How is the 313 list these days? (this is Mike Taylor from 313)

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

lovely.

it does for me what very little digi roots does. its relaxed. it skanks. its fucking lovely.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
So I finally bought See Mi Yah (took forever to get released here) and it's quite good (I don't even recognize half of the vocalists--the mystery to me Rod of Iron steals it too AFAICT.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

How much did you pay for it?

Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

$17 or so.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

SMY is nowhere near as great as w/the artists, depite my post upthread.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 22 June 2006 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, I think I've flip-flopped now and I like See Mi Yah better than "With The Artists!" It took a year though for that to happen. The second half of the album really takes off, and I'll be damned if "Lightning Storm" isn't the best thing they've ever done as R&S.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 22 June 2006 18:37 (eighteen years ago)

wow really? i don't like Rod of Iron's voice that much. i much prefer the Sugar Minot track but i think there's nothing as great as King..., Making History or Best Friend off w/tA.

I've heard about half of these mixes, all excellent patricularly the Sleeparchive, Carl Craig and Basic Reshape mixes. looking forward esp to hearing the Vainqueur.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 22 June 2006 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

four weeks pass...
So what's the general consensus on the Remixes (which just came out on CD)?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 20 July 2006 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

i still haven't bought this but of the mixes i have now heard the Soundstream one is my favourite.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 20 July 2006 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

the carl craig and r&s remixes are good, the rest were real snoozers to me, even under the influence

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Thursday, 20 July 2006 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

the craig one is menacing and slinky, i like that from him more than his usual modes

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Thursday, 20 July 2006 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

I like some of the remxes: Delay, Craig and Villalobos in particular. The Craig remix is quite awesome.

trees (treesessplode), Thursday, 20 July 2006 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

Mmm, I actually thought the Craig remix was a bit dissappointing...maybe because I was expecting him to improve yet again on the Relevee/Falling Up/Barbiturik Blues model.

Omar (Omar), Friday, 21 July 2006 06:25 (eighteen years ago)

Agree with the Craig champions above, not quite Falling Up, but god damn, it shifts my gears.

Macro Voyeur (Macro Voyeur), Friday, 21 July 2006 07:22 (eighteen years ago)

okay these are all really good except for francois k - especially vainquer and soundstream and delay. what was i thinking??

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Thursday, 3 August 2006 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i was gonna say. the francois k one is just, uh, wrong.

PARTYMAN (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 August 2006 20:33 (eighteen years ago)

is that the mid90s drum n bass sounding one? if so, it really breaks up the album's continuity...

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 3 August 2006 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

yeah it's like a bad breaks track pitched up to +8

PARTYMAN (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 August 2006 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

dear oh dear, the francois k mix of this is truly shameful.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 4 August 2006 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

not as bad as

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Friday, 4 August 2006 23:47 (eighteen years ago)

xpost
maybe cut a new groove in the vinyl to skip through it?

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Friday, 4 August 2006 23:48 (eighteen years ago)

oddly enuf, dude is like pulling exact same moves on his mix CDs. "francois k presents deep space NYC vol 1" is all gorgeous rainforest percussion-laden dubby house until track 9, when he suddenly busts out a sub-knowledge-covermount MATRIX + FIERCE track on us (?!?!?) ... guy is straight-up DISCO DAD w/ the drum & bass.

JABBA JABBA!! NIB NIB!! (vahid), Saturday, 5 August 2006 00:43 (eighteen years ago)

Is that Deep Space mix good Vabba? Apart from the d&b I mean? I've looked at it quite a few times, I have this (possibly erroneous) notion that it might sound a bit like Doc Martin meets Reverso 68.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 5 August 2006 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

i seriously wonder what ernestus and oswald made of that fk mix. maybe they were too polite to leave it out.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 5 August 2006 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

or maybe they liked it!

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 5 August 2006 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

doc martin meets reverso 68?? no, it sounds like what a competent ilxor might throw together ... it's not bad, but it doesn't blow minds or anything.

JABBA JABBA!! NIB NIB!! (vahid), Saturday, 5 August 2006 01:39 (eighteen years ago)

Okay. I think I am still a bit too enamoured of the idea of Francois K, I keep asusming everything he touches is going to be awesome.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 5 August 2006 02:15 (eighteen years ago)

There was one mix "see mi yah" that came on in my car player one day and the bass just made me shake all over, something I'd never gotten over headphones.

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 26 January 2008 20:35 (seventeen years ago)

i really revived to point out that between his remixes of SMY, "moving like a train" and "auto disco", mr soundhack / soundstream / smith'n'hack had a hell of a 2006.
