Go on.

Name a band, anything - I'll connect it back to the Byrds. The Byrds are my genesis of everything.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I've not heard that - link me up and I can link it back to the Byrds.

Teletubbies - Alien Voices on PTA 109 from Younger than Yesterday - THE BYRDS.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Old Dirty Bastard - David Crosby - The Byrds!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a sickness!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Orbital. Public Enemy.

Stringent Stepper (Stringent), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Vengaboys - "flying away, on Venga Airways" - Eight Miles High - The Byrds.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Orbital - Ambient Techno - Moog Raga - THE BYRDS

Public Enemy - Bob Dylan - The Byrds

The Move - The Byrds opened up for them in '69 during Sweetheart of the Rodeo.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

You're insane.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

And the move did "So you want to be a r&r star" on the "Something Else" e.p.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Bah - well then - Southampton - Saints - "The Christian Life" - Sweetheart Of The Rodeo!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you not heard Moog Raga? Same thing.

Public Enemy - Chuck D's protest music set to beats -Bob Dylan - acoustic protest music - The Byrds covered Bob Dylan.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Pootie Tang

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Renee & Renato

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Vengaboys - two dancers - The Byrds employed two dancers that followed them when they toured in support of Mr Tambourine Man.

The Byrds are responsible for everything!

I blame the Byrds!

Hold on - I don't know those bands.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Crass - Bob Dylan - The Byrds!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Howabout The Birds (of Leaving Here and Ron Wood fame)

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Saint, can you also connect everything *forward* to the Byrds?
(I notice Mahler and Reinhardt not 'connected' yet)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The Birds - presented a writ to the Byrds as they stepped off of the plane when they first arrived in England. The Byrds immortalised it with a couplet from 'Eight Miles High'.

Mahler - Roger McGuinn - asked Van Dyke Parks to process his keyboard sounds on 'Fifth Dimension' to sound like Mahler or Beethoven.

It's a sickness.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Mornington Crescent.

Oh, all right

"Marissa Marchant" - that's gonna get him...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Renee & Renato - one hit wonders - in a similar style of Sonny and Cher - who were the Byrds biggest rivals when they first hit the scene - going so far as to record a live performance of a Byrds song and copying it note for note.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Marissa Marchant - big ego - David Crosby - THE BYRDS!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, Bob Dylan is such a catch-all.

How about emo?

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

(Anybody else have the uncanny notion of Saint being Geir's evil twin? :)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I know he's evil, thats for sure.

Emo - Husker Du - Byrds.

Dammit. I will think of something.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Rod Hull and Emu?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Emo - The Byrds - Why - initially was a plea for David Crosby's mother to let him do more stuff as a kid. 'She kept on saying no to me since I was a baby' before being changed. Keeping in line with emo's facility to complain about 'bad family situation' - i.e. - 'A Nice Family Dinner for Once from some gadawful emo band I had to review.

I'm just obsessed with the Byrds 'T'! I admit its a sickness.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not evil! I forgot about the Husker Du cover as well! Two reasons why The Byrds started emo!

Rod and Emu - they arent a music act, are they?

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

PS I don't set around and think about the Byrds but they were the first band that I got obsessed with when I was 12. Since then I mark everything against the Byrds. Sigh. Its a sickness.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Merzbow

anode (anode), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

re emu, no but you did say Name a band, anything...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok how about Janet Jackson?

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

O.k., believe or not - McGuinn - in the late sixties - was obsessed with electronics. Check Moog Raga from Notorious Byrd Brothers. I've got a demo of the electronic album that he was bandying about. It actually is a pretty good proto-Merzbow thing. Ha ha! I'm sad.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Janet sampled Joni Mitchell who was a discovery of David Crosby from THE BYRDS!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I finally got it, yr Doomie

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Thats a good way to connect pretty much anyone in hip-hop via Q-Tip. I quit.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Bring back that lovely sympathetic "Geoff" guy, man!

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow. Not heard those bands. I thought of another connection during lunch - Sex Pistols - The Byrds.

John Lydon married to Ari Up's mother - The Slits - A member of the Slits did the hari chant on Dream Academy's Love - Roger McGuinn covers 'Life in a Northern Town' live.

Just think of all the connections with the Byrds: First to use the moog in rock music, Miles Davis got them signed to Columbia, John Coltrane inspired them to write Eight Miles High - etc.

The Byrds, in turn may be connected back to The Beatles and Bob Dylan anyway, which proves that The Beatles are the most important band in history. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The Byrds PISS all over the Beatles! In fact, The Beatles are a cheap rip-off of the Byrds! Moihaha!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Public Enemy - Chuck D's protest music set to beats -Bob Dylan - acoustic protest music

"Subterranean Homesick Blues" is an obvious link here too ;)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Btw. I am really curious how The Beatles got to hear The Byrds already in 1962 ;)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

McGuinn playing 'Life In A Northern Town' sounds like the most exciting cover this side of Ride playing 'Sight Of You' (recently confirmed as most exciting cover of last 15 years).

I like the way the Saint is doing this - his connections are not sheerly frivolous.

U2?

U2 - easy - the Joshua Tree album - the Joshua Tree Gram Parsons burial place - THE BYRDS.

or

U2 - The Thrills - THE BYRDS.

Don't know Cop Shoot Cop!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

heck, U2 was a gimme.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Cop shoot Cop - shared a film director - Richard Kearn with Sonic Youth - who owe their careers to Eight Miles High.

How are U2 linked to The Thrills?

Sonic Youth - who owe their careers to Eight Miles High.

???????

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

How are U2 linked to The Thrills?

Why - they are both Irish bands and I believe Paul McGuinness managed The Thrills for awhile!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Cop shoot Cop - shared a film director - Richard Kearn with Sonic Youth - who owe their careers to Eight Miles High.

Hmmm.....not sure about the Sonic Youth oweing their career to "Eight Miles High" bit, but close enough.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The only reason why I say that is Eight Miles High was the first rock song to imitate the free jazz of John Coltrane - like - Sonic Youth (especially the RCA version). Around the time of Eight Miles High - the Byrds did another lost album - of Miles Davis/free jazz - which was tribute to Davies for getting them signed to Columbia. It was called 'garage jazz'. Think - Sonic Youth - 'garage jazz'. Its there.

scott m (mcd), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Talyor Dane - produced by Steve Rossi - who produced Dylan - who the BYRDS covered numerous times.

Also the parellal - Warren was Dane's Dylan.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I screwed the first one up!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Arnold Schönberg

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Kathy Troccoli who worked with Dane sang recently 'I Can Hear Music' on the Beach Boys dvd - the Beach Boys being the biggest rivals of the Byrds in their heyday.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Arnold Schönberg - a disciple of Wagner - who was one of the three composers that McGuinn asked Van Dyke Parks to translate when working on the Fifth Dimension album.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Kathy Troccoli who worked with Dane sang recently 'I Can Hear Music' on the Beach Boys dvd - the Beach Boys being the biggest rivals of the Byrds in their heyday.

As well, "I can hear music" was featured on a recent Curt Boettcher release - who shared the same producer - Gary Usher - with the Byrds, the Beach Boys, etc.

Palestrina

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Gaye Bikers on Acid's first ep was produced by Jon Langford whose band - The Mekons - covered Gram Parsons from the Byrds! As well as being part of the Grebbo scene - which had grown out of the indie obsession with the jingle jangle of the Byrds!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I can connect everything back to Genesis

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

M Mayer - can't find anything on and I don't know him.

Geir - its going to be the same previous answer on yer query.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

M Mayer on Kompakt - Kompakt records recently had Manitoba dj - Manitoba's 'Up in Flames' was heavily influenced by the Byrds.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i Can connect The Byrds to every major conspiracy theory comitted in the last century

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Anekdoten - progressive rock band playing k-rock grooves - k-rock - was a german take on the n/a psyche of the 60s - i.e. the BYRDS.

tenuous - i know!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

GG Allin

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

GG Allin died on 93-06-27 - twenty years after Clarence White of the Byrds - 73-07-14

GG Allin covered Warren Zevon's Carmelita - Zevon had REM as his backing band in the late eighties - REM repopularised the Byrds and birthed College Rock.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

The Byrds -> The Eagles -> Hotel California -> California is near Nevada which is where Tupac was shot. 'Turn Turn Turn' has prophetic connotations in this shocking new light.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Jimmy, you're unstoppable!

Okay, howabout......... Missing Foundation

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Jimmy McGuinn's favourite colour is blue which is also the colour of several of the books in the depository that Lee Harvey Oswald fired his THREE AND ONLY THREE shots. coincidence?

Fields of the Nephilim?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Fields covered - In Every Dream Home a Heartache - which was done originally by Roxy Music - who covered Eight Miles High by the Byrds!

Thinking of Missing Foundation - they were on restless werent they?

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Missing Foundation were briefly on Restless. Basically an amorphous gaggle of squatter insurgents here in NYC in the late 80's fond of inciting riots and playing what some might describe as 'music', but what others might decry as needlessly violent noise.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Latimore. Denise LaSalle. Johnnie Taylor. Bobby Rush. Clarence Carter. Malaco in general. Connect 'em.

My friend Kathy was a big fan of them in the day. She saw them during the late eighties. Still can't find the link. I will, though!

haha tenuous as fukc - anekdoten = awesome scandinavian red-era king crimson soundalike.

missing foundation - restless record labels - golden paliminos - also on restless - featured mr stipe - byrds obsessive - who covered - a moby grape song - a band that opened up for the byrds many times.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Fair enough. nicely done.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Jandek - Low did a cover version of one of his songs for the tribute album - Low had the guy from America sing on one a Low album - America briefly charted with 'Horse with No Name' - which was a sound-a-like of CSNY - a group that featured David Crosby - OF THE BYRDS!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The Bacon Brothers - first album was produced by Bon Jovi - who in turn wrote songs for Cher's comeback album 'If I Can Turn Back Time' - Cher - for a brief while - and along with Sonny were the main rivals to The Byrds - having taped their performance of a Bob Dylan song - did it in the Byrds style and released it in direct competition to the Byrds.

This one might be tenous but off the top of my head -

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

There is always a hipster who kills any office fun with their 'cool' comments.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

No hipsterism here. You just kept on calling it a sickness, and I guess I got kinda worried.

sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Obviously I'm sick or else I would not be denying it! Arrggh. Must go and reread Johnny Rogan's bio of the Byrds.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Britney Spears.

Abby, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Christ, I thought I was obsessed. I'm like Jane Normal with Duran Duran compared to you, Jimmy the Biggest Byrds Fan Evah.

In fact, please connect Duran Duran to The Byrds.

Mellow Dee (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Duran Duran - named from a character from Barberalla - which stared David Hemmings - who did an underground movie - name escapes me - but will track it for you if you ask - which had a soundtrack which featured contributions from the recently departed Byrd, Gene Clark and the other Byrds. I think it was LA something something.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Britney Spears - Justin Timberlake - Janet Jackson - sampled Joni Mitchell - who was a find of David Crosby of THE BYRDS!

I'll do aqua and anal cunt tomorrow.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Dead Milkmen

Tessa Court, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Anal Cunt - covered the Smiths - on a tribute album - who in turn were, along with REM responsible for the jingle-jangle Byrds revival of the 80s.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Awesome.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

do King Crimson.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Jimmy, I am building you a shrine. Will you be my icon?

Mellow Dee (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha!

: - D

King Crimson - off the top of my head -

King Crimson made their debut at the Hyde Park concert with Rolling stones - opening - and I think the Hyde Park show was the memorial show for Brian Jones who was responsible for co-writing Eight Miles HIgh which was a big hit for THE BYRDS!

I'm saving Aqua for tomorrow.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

impressive, but it's CTA102. I'll assume that was just a typo. But don't to it again. That song means a lot to me.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

It was a typo!

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, I@ve got Aqua and Dead Milkmen for tomorrow ... I won't use the same restless link again for the Dead Milkmen.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 5 February 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Thursday, 5 February 2004 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

too obvious and all with direct links.

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Thursday, 5 February 2004 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

damn f0iled

pete s, Thursday, 5 February 2004 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Y'know, Jimmy, I was impressed you decided on this unique linkage between "my" band and "your" band. I thought maybe you'd use the Bob Dylan link you used upthread because Duran recorded a cover of "Lay Lady Lay" in 1995 for Thank You, but I'm seeing that you're trying for original links here.

I salute you, sir.
