I haven't been on this board for very long, so I'll ask: is Geir Hongro taking the piss?

Generally? Is this person for real? I have my doubts, you see, and I was wondering if anyone knew why he says such consistantly stupid things...

Stupid (Stupid), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

He's real in the ghetto sense.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

What does "in the ghetto sense" mean?

Also, I wouldn't use black slang in reference to him. He wouldn't like that at ALL.

Stupid (Stupid), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

He's been doing this to our knowledge since 1995. If it's a pisstake, then Doomie should be taking lessons from HIM on how to do it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

He's Geir from the block
He aint never gonna stop
He told all you niggaz
He likes melodic pop

pete s, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

he is funny though. on that philly/motown thread he was saying how he believes in "total music". which is fine, if you didn't know his favorite band is Genesis.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

He's a sophisticated sex robot sent back through time to change the future...for one lucky lady.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"He's a sophisticated sex robot sent back through time to change the future...for one lucky lady.
-- Spencer Chow"

To the soundtrack of Genesis?

Poor girl...

Stupid (Stupid), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The Hongro has always been there. He is the melodic fart of God.

Patrick Kinghorn, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, we all like to laugh, but we all know that if Geir had a Bill O'Reilly style talk show, we'd all watch.

Huckadelphia (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

We are currently participants in that talk show.

pete s, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

So it's The Truman Show with a better cast.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"better"

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I'm an egomaniac.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

http://home.online.no/~knhongro/Geir/geirsynt.jpg

I'm going to major in Hongrological Studies when I grow up.

Nick Mirov (nick), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

to his own dismay, geir is "keeping it real" to an extent where fitty would have to be shot nine times over to even be in the same league as him. i thought he was a joke - or even a bot - at first, too, but he "is very real", as i believe someone in the lord of the rings says about something evil...

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

talking about someone as if they don't exist etc.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

starting more threads to obsess over this guy etc.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

he is the sole irreplaceable person on this board.

Huckadelphia (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

well, him and alex. for his cover thread brilliance.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm. Are there more Geir threads than cover connections threads by now....?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

probably. depressing isn't it.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, I didn't know did I? Like I said, I'm quite new. I just wanted to know.

Stupid (Stupid), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Stupid, you can always use the "Search" function at the bottom of every page. Odds are most topics have been covered - even, yes, including Mr. Hongro.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Geir, now that you're here, let's settle this, officially. Are you taking the piss?
I mean, you must get a kick out of how bent out of shape some people get over your singular notions. I would.
I'm not suggesting that you're a fabrication, but do you, y'know, maybe add a little extra sometimes because you know it'll make someone's head spin?

Huckadelphia (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I am not taking the piss. But seeing great bands such as Coldplay, Travis, Dodgy or Crowded House being talked about in a derogatory way, backed by an attitude that "of course we all hate them" makes me pissed, and possibly causes me to exaggerate a good bit. I mean, I do like Outkast and also a lot of early 90s G-funk, so it isn't like I automatically hate all rap. But I still feel like defending melodic music, because there is way to little of it in the mainstream these days - at least the kind of melodic music that is written by the artist himself rather than some professional songwriter.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i almost think i like you now, geir.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Since this is the ask-Geir-a-straight-question thread - is the GeirHongro on soulseek you?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

geir-funk

(well it had to be said)

omg, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there a GeirHongro on Soulseek? I am GeirHong, but that may be who you mean :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes! That is who I mean. THE ONE WITH THE JAY-Z ALBUMS!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe Geir is really Trife.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Not any more, I think. But I often download a lot of stuff I am not supposed to like just to listen have heard it :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread is turning into an episode of Scooby Doo.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

AND I WOULD HAVE GOTTEN AWAY WITH IT IF IT WEREN'T FOR YOU MEDDLING MENTALISTS.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

!!! You're right! They've gone! But I saw them!

You do have a folder called 'funk' including "Say It Loud, I'm Black And I'm Proud" though

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Ughhhhh! Raggy!

pete s, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

*head explodes*

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the most "un-Geir" stuff I currently have on my HD is "Pre Millenium Tension" by Tricky (like his debut, but really hate that followup). But I have occasionally had some hip-hop stuff in there, that is corrent :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

"P.I.M.P."!!!

CHINGY??!!!!

I feel so betrayed.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

And the funk directory, yes. I probably still have that one. Used it to burn myself a "history of rock" series of CDs a while back. And thought I'd make a funk one too :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Now this :-) begins to look like a mask

pete s, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

THE WORLD MADE SENSE FIVE MINUTES AGO!!!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

And generally downloading anything that is on the Norwegian Top 20 list regardless of it being crap or not. Again to be certain to have heard it.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Check the "rare and unreleased" and "obscure scandinavian powerpop" directories for more representative stuff :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

It's too late to backtrack now!

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Geir do you have a brother?

pete s, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Judgment at ILXemburg

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

this is the best Geir thread ever because the human Geir, who doesn't really think that everybody who likes [insert music Geir doesn't care for here] is wrong, is surfacing. Hurrah!

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Which of the following folders does NOT exist on Geir's hard drive?

a) Bad Brains - I Against I
b) Cheb Khaled - N'Ssi N'Ssi
c) The Beatles - Sgt Peppers Lonely Hears Club Band

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Called Geir Hongro? No. :-)

(But, yes, I do)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

(ok to be fair there is a very very large amount of Scandinavian melodic powerpop...)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i downloaded 'Enter The Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers' off GeirHong on slsk! then i remembered i already had it...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Never had that one on Soulseek.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I am disturbed by the way you have taken to saying 'melodic music' in place of just 'music', Geir.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Good Lord Limahl has a best of???!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

you lie! or maybe i mean something else, something not very Geir at all. maybe it was 'Bummed' by Happy Mondays?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I did have some Wu-Tang spinoff solo project with a similar title for a while though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

If i'm honest Geir i do think you're a bit of an enigma, even before this thread. Your all-round pop knowledge is quite vast, and despite your crackpot theories you seem to have catholic taste, if your every contribution to every thread is taken into account. Your love for Janet Jackson and Madonna took me by surprise, for example.

pete s, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"Bummed" it may have been. (I have nothing against baggy, but was not too impressed with that particular album)

High Cholesterol (bastarda), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Where is Donna right when we need her?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

This is definitely the funniest thread in quite a while. Brave new world where everybody can see what's on everybody's computer. I'm amazed that you use your own name, though, Geir, in these blood-thirsty record label times.

Oh, and Tico: Khaled!

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Did anyone else see "The Believer"?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I generally like a lot of stuff. But the stuff I like most is the kind of stuff that I really miss having more of in the current hitlists.

And while I have downloaded some of it to check out, I am not at all impressed by current R&B, apart from Alicia Keys and some others, who appear to have more of a musical talent than most of the rest of the bunch.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe Donna's too busy downloading Geir's System Of A Down album?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

(NB I am sorry Geir for ransacking your folders - my HD has just as much 'incriminating evidence' I'm sure.)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The Khaled album is great, really.

(And if you do a search you will find that I have said a lot of positive stuff about rai music in various threads around here, also threads concerning black/white music)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, we could of course continue the discussion in the ILM room (I am there now), but.. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

High Cholesterol you are so OTM! I'm laughing my ass off here. Weel, I'm off to see a documentary about 2pac, maybe a little something for you too, Geir? It's on Danish TV (DR2) in five minutes...

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom, please tell me there's no pictures of homemade vibrators.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

2Pac I quite like, but not to the extent of wanting to check out a documentary :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

the kind of melodic music that is written by the artist himself rather than some professional songwriter

Geir, are you familiar with the "death of the author" concept?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom, please tell me there's no pictures of homemade vibrators.

You don't think I am stupid enough to share all of my hardcore kiddie porn movies, and all those Word documents that prove I am employed with Al Qaida? ;)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

BEST THREAD EVAH

pete s, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think he was accusing you of having homemade vibrator pics Geir :(

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

haha finally vindicated for my theory abt geir listening to rap more than the rest of nu ilm!!

$$, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I often download a lot of stuff I am not supposed to like just to listen have heard it :-)

it's positively towshendian!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

No problem Tico Tico. I thought it was just a joke anyway, like my response :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Except what Townshend did was illegal..

(oh wait... oh, well. nevermind) :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

this thread alone has made ILM worthwhile

chris (chris), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Great, I'm dl'ing the Daft Punk vs Sister Sledge boot. Geir you're a dark horse.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Never said anything negative about neither Daft Punk nor Bernards/Edwards here, mind you. Daft Punk I like a lot, actually (but that was not the reason for downloading that particular file)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

(I was kidding geir! I'm pleased to know that you do a lot of "research")

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Geir never gets angry or rude, no matter how harsh people are with his views. His manners are impeccable.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

apologist!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm utterly stunned at this thread. Daft Punk?! You like "Homework" even?

I also just found "Pass That Dutch" in your files.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Geir never gets angry or rude, no matter how harsh people are with his views. His manners are impeccable.

He shares this with Momus.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"Homework" I find a bit patchy, but the singles I love a lot. They sound a lot like some early 80s stuff that I used to love - same kind of synth sounds, same kind of snare/handclaps. Really great stuff.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

And Missy Elliot may also be added to the list of current R&B/hip-hop acts that I do like.

I find her just slightly overrated, but still considerably more listenable than most other stuff within that genre.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

But.......she's....not.....melodic...unnngh!

*, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Sometimes she is, yes. Other times, the production is what saviours her.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

B-but "Pass That Dutch" - it doesn't even have a instrumental hook, let alone a melody!

But this thread is only adding to your brilliance.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"Pass That Dutch" is not a favourite of mine. But the album isn't too bad.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Listening to Missy without seeing the film clips was a slightly deflating experience. The music was less bizarre and creative than the brilliant visuals implied.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

funnily enough i thought this about pass that dutch just last night colon

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

the 'pass that dutch' vid is only marginally less awesome than the 'work it' clip

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

(same goes for the music actually)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

My girlf was raving about Pass the Dutch, saying, 'it's on, get off the computer and come and see' etc every time it came up on Video Hits. But when we distilled it down, we realised what was blowing our minds was the f***ing brilliant choreography.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Generally, what I wrote in the mid 90s was probably more "representative" though. I still find the entire rap/R&B thing terribly overrated, and I still think there would be other styles of music on the hitlist. But I do see some value in some of it, particularly some early 90s G-funk, but also some of the current stuff. (And Arrested Development, PM Dawn and Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy too).

And as for electronica, I haven't been mocking it a lot here at all. I disagree with some of its musical values, but still love a lot of electronica, in spite of the fact that they are often lacking in melodies (but not necessarily in harmonies). You will probably find Google posts by me from 95-96 where I attack electronica though, but the old AMA regulars may remember how I publicly changed my mind regarding electronica sometimes around 1997.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread fills me with joy, for so many reasons.

Geir - loads of modern RnB is melodic. This is the thread where you tell us what you like.

Huh?

I'm going back to the Byrds thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Geir, I saw some other Bertine Zetlitz tracks in your folder, are they worth bothering with? The one Tom mentions came up on the Europop thread from before Christmas, so I know nothing about her, although I think she's Polish for some reason.

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 5 February 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy shit.

Just when you think you know someone. Hey Geir, you're checking r'n'b for real? Awesome. What do you think of Tyrese's abs?

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 5 February 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

they are more impressive than Abs

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 5 February 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

All I can think of is a comment on the G H: C/D thread where someone called him "the only true voice of reason in the mentalist wasteland" or words to that effect. And now the mentalist wasteland had taken him to their bosom and other body parts.

I think I don't need ILM anymore. This thread has sealed it for me.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 5 February 2004 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

C'mon, man, fight the good fight.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Geir, I saw some other Bertine Zetlitz tracks in your folder, are they worth bothering with?

They are OK, but not the same electroclash-like style, as they are from her previous album. Her most recent album I would probably need a better ripper to be able to share. (I guess you know why, then...)

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 5 February 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Errrrrrrrrrrrrr, what is wrong with Geir, is he getting laid (at last) or something? I'm tempted to say "Welcome to the human race" and hope that, in future, he will think twice about referring to the non-white inhabitants of Britain as "immigrants" etc etc etc.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 5 February 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember on the old Creation records site, the kevin rowlands board. Hoxton Tom (a very name from the past) was on there claiming Kev as having the best soul voice that wasn't a wooden.

(Check yr rhyming slang dictionary)

Even though that's 'racist' language, I dunno if he even meant it derogatory.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 5 February 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh i reckon Geir has found love...with a hip-hop lovin' Ulrikaka

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 5 February 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

wooden spoon! ouch

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 5 February 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

See, this is the thing..

Is it better to say 'wooden' and not be thinking racially prejudiced?
Or say 'black' 'ethnic' or whatever polite version, and have that 'racially' motivated thinking process subsumed?

Sorry, that's gibberish. You get me tho?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 5 February 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

please explain the 'wooden' rhyme slang for a continental european ...

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 5 February 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"wooden" = "wooden top" = "w0p", (I'm guessing here)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 5 February 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Wooden plank = yank

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 5 February 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 5 February 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The permutations are probably endless, I fear. (I was fooled by the mention of "continental european", upthread)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 5 February 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

No Mark, you're thinking of 'silvery spoon'. I'm ashamed to know this.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 5 February 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 5 February 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, "Adam And The Ants" = "Pants" (well, only from 1981 onwards, surely?) and "Ant 'n' Dec's" is apparently now an accepted representation of "Oral Sex".

Well that's debatable - but, I confess, I made that one up. Actually I find rhyming slang in Glasgow generally more inventive and more widespread than it appears to be in London - not that you meet many "Cockneys" in London.

I really enjoy Geir's comments, generally because he doesn't pander to anyones expectations and is most likely 100% honest all the time, without fear of judgement. In ILM, that is a very unique presence to have. Maybe someone drew the comparison on another thread, but do Geir's opinions sometimes remind you of Karl Pilkington ?:
