2004 Grammys Thread

This is a thread where people can discuss the Grammys as they happen, and afterwards.

Of course, beforehand Andy Rooney chimes in with another chowderheaded attention-getting...um...op-ed piece. Or skit. "Football is a great game because it's real. We don't even know if what Janet Jackson flashed was real." Rockist shit.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

we've seen those closeups, they're totally real.

g--ff (gcannon), Monday, 9 February 2004 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Fate Joe is advertising an energy drink?!?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Fate Joe?!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

So the big opening act surprise is Prince, then? They're gonna have someone else join him, I take it.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Sure enough, there's Beyonce. (Sorry, no accent) (Sorry, it's Fat Joe.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos makes predictions: http://www.seattleweekly.com/features/0405/040204_music_grammys.php

Sym (shmuel), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

tell me if Larry Graham makes a surprise cameo!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

(I'm at work so I'm going to be living vicariously through you all)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

This would be so much better if Beyonce was not on stage.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all Purple Rain-era songs (20th anniversary, you see) with a little schoche of 'Crazy in Love."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I dunno. I like the way she shakes a tambourine.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Jakob Dylan and Carole King are on the show = CBS is running the show. (Even if neither of them are still on a CBS label.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Quentin Tarantino erases any doubt about the fact that he's a dork

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Quentin Tarantino makes for such a skin-crawlingly awful hispter.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Beyonce is wearing a tutu

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Beyonce thank...yes, she makes sure to thank the rest of DC.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I love Ellen a lot, but she's a huge sucking void at awards shows. She always seems TERRIFIED at these things.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Ellen Degeneres in the Life of Chris Rock

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like the idea of a rapper named Fate Joe! probably more than I would like the actual rapper's music, granted. he'd be all like "I have this sense of foreboding"--he could go existential, he could go gangsta, he could go bedsit, etc. think of the possibilities!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

A Beatles tribute by Dave Matthews, Gordon Sumner and Alex in NYC

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Quentin Tarantino truly needs to STOP!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Beatles tribute! Sting! Vincent Gill! Dave Matthews! Pharrell! Awkward!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

(and Pharrell on drums)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Prince & Beyonce was fucking awesome.

Who the hell is this balding dork with the acoustic guitar on the Beatles tribute? "I saw her dancing there?" how the heck can you fuck that up?

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Not sure I got that, but if you're saying I look like Vince Gill....well, I'd like to say that I'm about fifteen pounds lighter than the man. Or maybe you're suggesting I look like Pharrell. I should be so lucky.

This Beatles tribute thing is painful!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The Prince/Beyonce thing I didn't get. Does Prince need her help?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

commercially, yes, absolutely

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

WTF? They said that Chick Corea (?) is playing with the Foo Fighters! Isn't he a jazz gent?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it me, or does everybody seem rushed and nervous?

(Notice that the black person is safely in the background where nobody has to see him.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

EXACTLY! (x post) I don't want Prince dueting with anyone unless I know for sure he's getting lucky afterwards.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Not off to an especially promising start, then.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Sting + Vince Gill + Dave Matthews + Drummer = worst band ever?

may pang (maypang), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh come on, Michael. You've got to be kidding. Aren't you? I hope?

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Not sure I got that, but if you're saying I look like Vince Gill....well, I'd like to say that I'm about fifteen pounds lighter than the man

Yes, and at least, I'm sure. Sorry.

Pharrell looked so... marginalized.

(Target commercial featuring Cornershop!)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's kinda sad that Prince agreed to play twenty-year old material.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

So, basically Prince fulfilled the same attention-grabbing nostalgia function that Simon & Garfunkel did last year when they opened the show, right? Only it's Prince because the Grammys are trying to cater to a slightly younger demographic?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

No worries. You could've said I looked like Andy Rooney. There would've been problems.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

It would be much more exciting if Prince had had done the duet with James McNew.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

back on. back in a bit.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Bro -- you mean about the members of the band? No, I'm not kidding. It was announced in the press a while back.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Christina goes GOTH OH BOY!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen third-rate bands playing in the shithole bars do better Beatles covers than that.

My wife said she saw Wendy & Lisa in the band backing up Prince and Beyonce. I didn't see 'em but I'll take her word for it.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that the Polyphonic Spree gang singing with Christina?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Must she needlessly oversing everything? Nurse, fetch me hither mine nail gun.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

aguilera has hair like peaches!

tricky disco (disco stu), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

My wife said she saw Wendy & Lisa in the band backing up Prince and Beyonce.

I didn't notice that but...who knows?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

no Michael I meant the "black guy in the back" comment. Sort of sub-trifean at best.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd give my liver to charity if someone rushed onstage and garoted her.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

She's not gonna sing the entirety of "Beautiful" on her knees, is she?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Looks like a hole on stage beneath that smoke. Maybe Christina will (magically) fall into it.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

She seems a bit underlit, no?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

My wife said she saw Wendy & Lisa in the band backing up Prince and Beyonce.

are we thinking corporate-backed Purple Rain 20th anniversary dealio, then? hmmmm....

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The hair is a problem.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

(note: I am not thinking "yay!" I am thinking "when coffers need replenishing...")

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I love her in the suit, though. That's just unheard of.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

actually it's more cyndi lauper than peaches

tricky disco (disco stu), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't care what anybody says. I think she's beautiful.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Xtina is a professional and your words cannot bring her down. Her hair is scary tho.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

John Mayer isn't worth spitting on.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

tricky disco (disco stu), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

John Mayer and Matthew Perry - Dave Matthews' parents

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Was there a new Eagles? How did I miss that?

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

no Michael I meant the "black guy in the back" comment. Sort of sub-trifean at best.

Well, I wouldn't necessarily put it past the TV producers for thinking in those terms, if only just a wee little bit.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

No Doubt. Zzzzzzzzz.....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Rock stars should not have children

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this the newly drunken and high Beck we're seeing?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Beck played rock critic introducing the White Stripes

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i heart op art

tricky disco (disco stu), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, Jack is wearing black! I salute his new openness in his fashion direction.

Oh God, of course they have to medley their fucking songs. Bands ALWAYS have to medley songs on these award shows.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

strobe lights make for really shitty television.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

God Bless the White Stripes.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

This show is over. thanks for playing.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I know they're just trying to present a rock band live in the most dynamic way possible, but God, those lights!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Jack's harlequin pants made him look like he was wearing a codpiece.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

the White Stripes were just awesome.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Joe Perry can look as Glimmer Twin as he wants, but he's still a Bahston boy when he opens his mouth

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

My wife said she saw Wendy & Lisa in the band backing up Prince and Beyonce.

according to the recent Prince bio I read, supposedly Prince will not work with Wendy & Lisa again unless they renounce homosexuality, so I kinda doubt it was them.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Outkast: best acceptance speech ever.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Andre just said "thank you" and that's it. Awesome! More bands should do that!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Amen!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

wow.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Poor Joe Perry looked truly, truly ludicrous...and not in a cool way.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

The pimp-cane didn't help.

may pang (maypang), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Where was Big Boi?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't the music in that anti-drug PA sound an awful lot like Boards of Canada?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

notice steven tyler said "the love below - outkast"

interesting faux pas

tricky disco (disco stu), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Big Boi will be fine. It's easy to let the Grammys treat you like no. 2 when your single is no. 2 on the charts.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

but I don't dare say: what's the mat-ter here

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I love pop-country but Martina McBride is just awful and always has been. Time to check in on the Pro-Bowl.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

SO, let me get this straight. Prince plays a medley and it's embarrassing. The White Stripes play a medley and they're automatically the best performance of the night? Jesus, I'm glad I'm not a rockist.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

rockisim is underrated.

ModJ (ModJ), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Gotta love that window stage prop.

may pang (maypang), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

re: Martina McBride, I still don't get what this has to do with country music, like at all

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

(for the record, I was underwhelmed with Prince's segment myself... because he didn't get the chance to rip open his guitar, but it's still a better opening act than the Grammys have seen since... God, I don't know when.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

This song's a banal snooze, but Martina McBride's not usually this boring.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

no one told me the White Stripes did a medley. ew.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i missed the prince thing :(

tricky disco (disco stu), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I like Martina. But the Nightmare Before Christmas set is uh...

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"I kinda doubt it was them."

I think she saw a curly-haired girl playing the guitar and jumped to conclusions.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

That Sting song sounds so BAD

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

what's with these really lame 15-second "tributes" followed by random, unconnected award presentations?

also, who is this Joan of Arcadia girl? (no reason. really.)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Justin didn't thank Tim. Jesus how stupid.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim Baland?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

You can almost see Justin's mom's nipple shield...

Sam Hunt (robosam), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Was that Carole King or Scott Thompson?

may pang (maypang), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I sort of miss that minute of little awards that usually closed out each segment. Y'know... the categories I actually care about?

(Justin's mom is hot.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

SO, let me get this straight. Prince plays a medley and it's embarrassing. The White Stripes play a medley and they're automatically the best performance of the night? Jesus, I'm glad I'm not a rockist.

Prince played a medly of TWENTY YEAR OLD MATERIAL.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The dancing intern is my new boyfriend, only he doesn't know it yet.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Justin just gets cuter and cuter

(hmm. did he thank "Tim Mosley" or something? did he thank anyone? are the Producers' awards being presented in the main program?)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

... that's also better than the White Stripes brand-spanking new material.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

(Christ, I'm letting myself sound like I'm, like, 40.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

60 Minutes had a recent picture of Luther in a wheelchair. He didn't look bad, considering.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Ladies and Gentleman... replacing Janet Jackson as leader of 15-second tribute to Luther Vandross, but more appropriate Patti Labelle

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

the best male vocalist nominees were really strange

i don't get these categories

tricky disco (disco stu), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

She's amelodic.

It's always nice to hear some Bacharach at the Grammys.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 9 February 2004 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"Celine 'talented' Dion," that was great, as is Celine's sound disaster

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought he was going to play "Right Here Waiting" for a second.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Richard's got much more tasteful haircut these days.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

"SO, let me get this straight. Prince plays a medley and it's embarrassing. The White Stripes play a medley and they're automatically the best performance of the night? Jesus, I'm glad I'm not a rockist.

The White Stripes play a medly of 40 year old material.

gallantseagull, Monday, 9 February 2004 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

please please let Celine ask for a little more kickdrum in her monitor

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"woah she just sang that little vocal hook from "Slow Jams" "

that's cos Kanye sampled Vandross.

stephen morris, Monday, 9 February 2004 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos is going to predict everything that happens and win bets.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The way Celine sings to the camera is so desperately creepy -- she's a pro right down to her last corpuscle.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

though to be honest, her mid-range gives me chills - I wish she'd stick to it, though

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

A sign, perhaps, that Richard Marx and Celine Dion just aren't that interesting?

That is SO Right Here Waiting!

And the Janet remark. Snap!

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

oh I get it. Thanks stephen. What's the Vandross tune?

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

He's still got a long hard road ahead of him.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm enjoying imagining Celine kicking some stage manager ass right about now.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"A House is Not a Home"

stephen morris, Monday, 9 February 2004 02:07 (twenty-two years ago)

what exactly happened to Celine?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been something of an Alicia Keys-anti fan, but I agree that her lower range is remarkably strong and even if she's flat, she's still got at least a hope of controlling her voice, which Xtina and basically every other performer I've heard tonight (Dave Matthews) don't seem to be harnessing.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to admit It was kinda nice to hear her sing a song using a mic that wasn't drenched with digital effects.

may pang (maypang), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I was wondering about that, but is she too much of a pro to throw a tantrum per se?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Celine should have flashed boobie, that would have gotten their attention

(Anthony, she had no sound at all - just her pianist - then her mic fed back badly - it was very bar-band, which is a context I'd love to see a whole Celine concert in)

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

*scree*

"Ah fuck it, we're just going to sing upcountry Quebecois drinkin' songs."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

(holy shit!)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

what exactly happened to Celine?

A weird five-ten moment at the beginning where you couldn't hear Celine but you could hear the editing room.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Maddie looks like she had some new work done.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

so: did Madonna want to not be announced, or was this more audio problems? either way, it was iconically awesome

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Sting going to sing that song? What is that song?

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Madonna's hair = classic. That friggin' accent = dud.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, the predictions of "Roxanne" were completely right.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I like how Celine used both country and r&b inflection in the same song

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, I know what people mean about Madonna's British accent now. (xpost)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Celine's first handheld mike was dead. You hear the stage manager talking into the other mike, asking "should I bring out the backup? should I bring out the backup?" (We were one pissed-off director away from hearing a nice, juicy f-bomb and making us and CBS ALL forget about Janet's boob.)

Her IFB (earpiece) wasn't working. As the stage manager was leaving, she began to plead "I'm still hearing nothing." She turned around, looked a bit pissed, Richard Marx got the audience to applaud her professionalism, and about 15 seconds in, feedback started. It quickly stopped, but her mike sounded awful hot for the rest of the performance and her pitch appeared to be slightly shaken. Celine Unplugged!

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

It's amazing that any time Sting does a Police song, he starts singing with that jamaican accent.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Betcha Sting does a medley.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Even Maddie seems full of nerves, the hell?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Sting and Sean Paul's "Roxanne": HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA omg I am DYIN' here

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

So, Sting introduced Madonna to Guy Ritchie? Famous people suck.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

If Sting (or better yet, Bono) ever finds out he has six months to live AND there's a Grammy Awards ceremony during that period, THAT'S the one I'll skip work to see.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"Yeah, I'm tired of being pertinent and kinda cool - I think I'll perform with fuckin' STING!"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"Take THAT, Jay-Z!"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I like this duet in theory, but it really sounds like two different songs.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean Paul's doing "Roxanne"? I bet Pras is watching this in his small apartment, PISSED OFF AS A MUTHAFUCKA.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

With Bob Marley dead Sting is the only reggae icon that matters!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, the Police and dancehall really don't have that much to do with each other, do they?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Well that sucked.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

when will the aliens be presenting?

tricky disco (disco stu), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

God that sucked. Did the producers think Sean Paul just by himself wouldn't big enough or something?

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoa!

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh. Thank God it wasn't Dido. "White Flag" has been following me everywhere like a curse.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

xtina is trying to live out a Trevor Brown painting

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

LINDA PERRY! AHHHH!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The demon comes forth!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Xtina made a bad Janet Jackson joke!

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, j0hn.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I really liked how the graphic covered her up, just in case . . .

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

will funkadelic actually make this show not suck?

tricky disco (disco stu), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

wait, are outkast and pfunk performing TOGETHER, or are those seperate performances?

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

NOBODY ON EARTH is capable of making the Grammys not suck. why else would you all be watching?!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I saw P-Funk play a Grammy's Ceremony like ten years ago and...THEY WON'T HELP MUCH.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Camera zooms in pretty damned fast to rid CBS of the cleavage that will be their burdon tonight time and again.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Heineken commercial features Air song!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

WTF with Heineken pandering to the RIAA?

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Xtina's hair is truly a hideous sight.

may pang (maypang), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Optimism-chimer again: no, that sucked because they were there in service of Red Hot Chili Peppers. Tonight it won't be as bad because they're backing up OutKast.

(Oh, wait. I forgot ILM hates OutKast right now. Sorry.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks M. I was wondering if it was just me. I haven't watched in a few years.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

OK I thought that had something to do with RHCP. You might be right, Eric H. I actually would love to see the Outkast performance.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The Grammys always do these big indigestible multi-artist showcases: wasn't there some kind of TRIBUTE TO SYNTHESIZERS in the mid-eighties with Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Thomas Dolby and Howard Jones in a really weird wig?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

the telepromptering never fails to make me cringe

tricky disco (disco stu), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

thank fuck for jt

tricky disco (disco stu), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha! Yes! I remember seeing that -- and how it was oh so cool that they could stutter their voices.

I should also note that the rehearsal for that show was filmed for an episode of TV's Bloopers and Practical Jokes wherein Stevie made Herbie think some of his music was erased! The hilarity!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I supposed to believe that Justin is actually playing that thing?

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

what? the bass? the skin flute? what?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah Jessica Parker...because we can't imagine music is important enough to hold three hours' worth of TV time.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess they couldn't get Jamiroquai so Justin agreed to pick up the slack

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's a Fender Rhodes piano.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

graci, J.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

And I guess he really is playing it, 'cause I heard at least one bum note.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Best performance yet!!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but that's not saying much.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The camera just swung behind to assure us that yes, Justin is playing the damn piano. Why he's teamed with Arturo Sandoval, we may never know.

Was it bad of me to jump up and down when 50 didn't get best rap album?

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"HOORAY! We applaud you for not being that awkward."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

um, does the Grammy's actually just have Justin playing a Fender Rhodes for your entertainment? Are we THAT fascinated by the guy these days?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus, everybody's talking over Olivia Harrison.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooh...I hope they get Jay-Z doing something from The Gray Album!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Yoko Ono LENNON?

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually truly liked Justin and Arturo! There was lots of energy in that call and response!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Yoko's talking weird again.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Justin was great.

I'd so love it if Yoko busted out a little "Don't Worry Kyoko" right now.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I love her, but she makes NO sense.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't it weird that it's taken this long for the Beatles to win whatever award they're getting?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"YOKO!" "JUSTIN!" "YOKO!" "JUSTIN!"

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I always cringe when Yoko says things like "If John were alive today, he would..."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

they won lots of Grammys when they were around

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yoko looks awesome.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

God, Ringo's had some work done, eh? He looks about 35!

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Who the hell wrote this cliched Beatles dialog that "cleverly" works in song titles?

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

yoko >>>> pmc

tricky disco (disco stu), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

yoko = shrill mama-san

ModJ (ModJ), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul does not.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul McCartney has a Detroit Red Wings logo on his acoustic guitar!! WTF???!!

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Yoko does look awesome, though, true.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Fucking Paul.

stephen morris, Monday, 9 February 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul is even hammier than Celine, fer chrissakes.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul bears a pretty disturbing resemblence to the current incarnation ov Genesis P-Orridge

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

so Paul's a woman now?

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hi, I'm Ringo. I just woke up."

may pang (maypang), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Starsky & Hutch. Heart palpitates!

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Rob, Paul did it just for you!

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

jaymc: once again, I'm thinking I'm on your wavelength moreso than anyone else here. What the White Stripes performance was for Alex in NYC (i.e. so the best moment of the show it's ridiculous), JT was for me... at this point. No, it wasn't spellbindingly great, but in this line-up, he's the only one that's done better than I expected.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

No, it means Paul has a lot of piercings now.

Down there.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I the only one here who thinks that Yoko was FAKING IT?

may pang (maypang), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I heart Yoko.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

CBS acts as if they OWN the Beatles!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

no, they just own the Sullivan rights. DING! DING! DING! DING! DING!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Ringo of course was the best

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I'd be pretty content to turn the whole show over to Justin

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Josh he cares! That was seriously bizarre. A hockey logo? On his guitar?

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Must be their turn. Didn't ABC own the Beatles back when the Anthology came out? ("Stay tuned to A-Beatles-C!")

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

When will people learn that this Black Eyed Peas song isn't political, it's just bad?

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, yeah. I remember when ABC was running a slew of promos scored to that orchestral glissando from "A Day in the Life." Memories.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, are those string instruments for real?

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Who writes this drivel? Can't they hire critics to write dialogue? Can you imagine what presenters would say?

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Finally, Horse Face let down his mane.

stephen morris, Monday, 9 February 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

It can be BOTH political AND bad...and...shit, this was just an excuse to have Justin on again, wasn't it?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

It's about as intelligent as modern politics... but, yeah, that doesn't make it good.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

have you watched a Behind the Music recently, Kate? we don't WANT critics writing dialogue! theirs is just as bad! (cf. this post)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that Beyonce or Carmen Electra? Or both?

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

the Black Eyed Peas' faith in the electoral system would be moving if it weren't so sad

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

this show needs more channeling of genesis p'orridge

tricky disco (disco stu), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes! Open shirt + classical music!

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Doc Watson!

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait a minute...isn't this show on a five minute delay thx to Janet? And they STILL left in that humongous Celine goof?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, kids, the Grammys' priorities are EXACTLY as out of whack as you remember them being as a child.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, more pretending that we care about classical music.

Diamond - you're joking, right?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

June Carter Cash gets the posthumous award = the grammys just as usual.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

WHOA!!! JC is sitting next to Justin's mom. I think we all know why this is (wink, wink... JT heart JC heaven).

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I HAD FAITH IN THE GRAMMYS ONCE! (True!)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

ha, I care a fuck of a lot more about Van Cliburn, who is AWESOME, than I do about a pointless exercise like "Where Is the Love?", daring as it does to take pop music to the next level by rhyming "love" with "above" and whatnot

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh didn't we all Mike. (I think I lost it when Peter Garrett asked for peace on it back in 1983 or something.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

About the hockey thing gabbneb? No, I'm serious!! It was a little sticker next to the bridge! Completely random and bizarre!

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

five SECOND delay IIRC? maybe that's the Oscars though

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Van Cliburn and Merle Watson didn't even get to come to the fucking stage. At least they had reaction shots.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't had the chance to have faith in the Grammys in my lifetime. Stevie Wonder's three album trophies came before I wuz born.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

My first Grammys was the Jacko sweep, so I had it good.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I could swear it was five minutes, not seconds...lemme look in Yahoo! news.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that was mine as well. Man, that Adam Ant outfit he had.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

These commercial breaks are the longest!

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The closest I came to having a good Grammy night was when Lauryn Hill beat Madonna, if that tells you anything.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought I heard 15 minutes. "Live" indeed. Re: tape delay

may pang (maypang), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Best Grammys ever was the Herbie Hancock one obv

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

not to get all Alex but Beyonce really does suck poop

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

OK... now I am getting mad about the Prince opening thing. He should've been given the stage by hisself if Beyoncé gets to come back. Jayzus.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand the staging of this thing.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

well this is a shit song, innit?

stephen morris, Monday, 9 February 2004 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the main idea behind the staging is "hey, maybe there oughta be some staging or something"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, it is, but the malleability of beyonce's image = genius

xp

THE FUCK?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Grammy site appears to be down, but I just read that Beyoncé has already won 5, and this is before I think Female R&B and Record of the Year. Christ, I like that song, but this is excessive.

Eugene Levy, winner best song from a film.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Bill Clinton, Grammy winner

I care about Van Cliburn too (well, sort of), but very few people at or watching the Grammys do, but they're all pretending to know who he is.

The "hockey" logo is the logo for a guitar company I can't seem to place at this moment (Takamine? Washburn?).

Whoa, Evanescence!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

haha YEAH 50!

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

You go, Fiddy!

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

What did 50 do? I missed it.

stephen morris, Monday, 9 February 2004 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Rock - Fitty walks on stage after Evanescence wins best new artists!

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

At least we were spared the embarrassment of Fountains of Wayne winning Best New Artist.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

ok 50's appearance has redeemed this entire broadcast, that was awesome

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

What'd he do, say he was there for the children or what?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Did he mishear it? I mean, I guess "Evanescence" sorta sounds like "50 Cent."

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I think 50 realized that running on stage during someone else's speech might be the only way to get up there. The camera was somewhere else, what the hell was he doing?

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

No, Ned, that's the Wu-tang.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Alright. The Funk tribute is coming up (if the announcer's to be believed). It's make-or-break time.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

did he shoot Ja Rule from the stage? (please God...)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, J, thank you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

naw Ned he just walked onstage, circled behind Evanescence, and walked right back off - it was like the funny idea the kid from drama club would have

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

actually it would have kicked ass if 50 Cent yelled "Wu-Tang is for the children!" and left.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

amy didn't thank god!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, John! Love it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony OTM

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Eric, dude, you're kind of harshing my buzz with the constant complaining. The broadcast has been fine so far.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

wait, did they say Outkast, pfunk AND Earth Wind & Fire? dslgkjdgiohsg

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh sweet Daft Punk in a Bud commercial

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Why didn't that air during the superbowl?

stephen morris, Monday, 9 February 2004 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

wait, did they say Outkast, pfunk AND Earth Wind & Fire?

how many fucking people can that stage fit?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I LUV U BEYONCE KNOWLES IN A "ME LIKEY UR VOICE MUCH MUCH" WAY

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

decaf, Dan.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

They only they could get this audience get funky is if they pumped the auditorium full of methane gas.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, what Dan just said is REALLY what 50 Cent should have announced.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

what a way to inspire a Jay-Z/50 Cent beef!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

What a missed opportunity this will be if Prince doesn't show up again to jam with PFunk, EW&F, and OutKast.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

hmm... time hasn't been too kind to Phil Bailey's falsetto

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

he'd have to stand in front or it'll be hard to see him behind Andre.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Broheems OTM

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously, I understand that people have different tastes and all, but COME ON SHE WAS FUCKING GREAT.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Why isn't EW&F *backing* OutKast?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Or are they? Is that live or ... ?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, THIS is great.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

They're singing back-up at least.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Delete Sam Jackson plz.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

beyonce was great

(they're singing, but the backing is mostly the backing track)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh please don't tell Robert Randolph is gonna steal the show from everyone...

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Seems possible, since Clinton appears to be sleepwalking.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Sweet P-Funk started with a snippet of "Alice In My Fantasies"!!

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Worst performance by an actor playing a preacher reading a teleprompter goes to Samuel L. Jackson.

BrianB (BrianB), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

poor george, he knows that audience has no funk to give up.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

My god, George Clinton is Willie Mays in a Mets jersey falling down while shagging shallow fly balls

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Bootsy!

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh that's tough

ModJ (ModJ), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno, this is pretty good for national television (but jesus, the p-funk performance is pretty messy)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The P-Funk thing sounds as overcooked as I feared.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

on the other hand: GOLD LAME BOOTSY

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"Get Low"!!!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, Bootsy. But was Prince part of this or did I miss him?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

They sang the bit from "Get Low"!

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

they let George out of jail for this?

Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"Get Low"? Was Lil' Jon there? I was hoping they'd take a cue from the BET Source Awards' Tribute To Crunk!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Did I see a Dixie Chick up there or does EW&F have a white female on fiddle?

BrianB (BrianB), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't see Prince. More interesting, didn't see Andre, who was born to be a part of the mess.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

P-Funk spectacle was aweomse but it'd have to go on for an hour or so to get the idea

Dan, Beyonce's got a nice voice but she can't sing a lick

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck anyone in the ass with a broken bottle who didn't smile at least once during that segment.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Andre was there

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

who the heck is Robert Randolph?

yay get low!!! and yay Clinton looking like Yoko Ono

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

and uh, are the Foo Fighters playing with some revered jazz pianist next? uhh

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

P Funk was a mess, just as great a mess as they normally are.

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

After QotSA, Killing Joke, and Probot, Dave Grohl is going to play drums in the Return to Forever reunion.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Robert Randolph is steel guitar for God, kinda.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Robert Randolph grew up in NJ, playing "sacred steel" guitar in his church (this is common apparently in certain churches). He was encouraged to go secular and was adopted by the jam-band/Medeski Martin & Wood scene, from which he's widened his popularity somewhat. He's supposed to pretty much show up anyone he plays with.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

WHAT? Snoop Dogg and Jason Alexander? THIS IS UTTERLY UNEXPECTED!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you think they asked Jason Alexander to be on the show just so he could make that Britney joke?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

anybody remember when Snoop Dogg had a modicum of menace to him?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry to intrude, but I have to do a phoner with John Mayer tomorrow.
Any obvious questions related to the Grammys? (I'm not watching; just got satellite TV and don't have locals yet.)

M Deeds, Monday, 9 February 2004 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Aja discovers jazz!

stephen morris, Monday, 9 February 2004 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

walk-on cameo was the case that they gave me

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Why is this Foo Fighters / Chick Corea thing happening?

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"I know a place where I can go...when I'm lonely..."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I was just about to mention that I talked to Robert Randolph right after he finished opening up for Mayer...he was shocked at the things that 14 year-old girls will yell at you!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the funniest thing ever!

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, those church steel guitar players are fucking surreal.

I like Snoop Dogg drinking from his pimp chalice. I didn't think you were supposed to do that.

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Jazz is boring WITHOUT GUITAR ROCK ACTION, you see.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Listen to all those glissandos! I love it!

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it just me, or did Snoop just school the teleprompter?

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Snoop schooled the guy doing the hearin-impared transcription

ModJ (ModJ), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Watch Dave bang his head to that serious SHIT Chick's puttin' down!

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Snoop Scarlet and Friar Costanza

Foo Fighters + Chick Corea = Phish

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Welp now there is one degree of separation between Anthony Braxton and Dave Grohl.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I was hoping they'd prog on out.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Hell, one degree between Dave Grohl and maybe L. Ron Hubbard.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel like Eddie Murphy could show up as Snoop at these award shows and no one would notice.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Snoop would never laugh at his own jokes.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Doesn't Michael McDonald look uncomfortably like a college professor?

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

What was the point of that little skit? To remind people that Michael McDonald used to be famous once?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary J and Michael McD are the best presenters so far, though they should be singing together

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Coldplay in not-being-Outkast shockah!

stephen morris, Monday, 9 February 2004 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

countdown to chris martin political statement...

teeny (teeny), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos was right about Coldplay.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Coldplay in political endorsement shockah!

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

michael macdonald and mary j. blige = colonel sanders and one of his chickens

joseph (joseph), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

it taking the appearance of non-Americans to make political statement shocker (they name-checked John Kerry)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

COLDPLAY/?!?!?! AHHHHHHahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

I feel especially appropriate clicking "submit" in this context

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

should've seen it coming. give the anti-hip-hop contingent only one choice and watch it coast.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

YOU CAN'T EVEN VOTE HERE!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

In the end, John. It's got to hurt a little bit.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Once again, the weirdly gay-coded Jay-Z/Henieken commercial.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe he's getting dual citizenship now that he's with gwennie.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad Coldplay won. That probably was the best song of that lot. Well, ok, "Crazy In Love" was better.

Don't worry, OutKast will get their Grammys.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

By the way, no once mentioned the appearance of Sir Nose during the funk number.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I was hoping the Foo Fighters were going to do "Jazz Odyssey"

LondonLee (LondonLee), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe he's getting dual citizenship now that he's with gwennie.

I totally read that as "with his weenie." Which is still valid.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Brits can't talk about American politics? Don't they do it all the time in ILE?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope Coldplay achieves Rattle & Hum like absurdity in the next few years. For hilarity's sake.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Meanwhile, Radiohead can think, "There but for the grace of God..."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

That was the strangest introduction yet.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

why is Sarah McLachlan here? did Shania have to cancel at the last moment?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Pro Bowl time again

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

In one evening, I have enjoyed both Sarah McLachlan and Sting. I need help.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh to take that out of context.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoa. Dude sitting next to Steven Tyler with pink beret and dyed-red goatee - John Kalodner?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

So, uh, when do they give out the awards? I swear they have only handed out like 5 in the last 2 hours.

Sam Hunt (robosam), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Meanwhile, Radiohead can think, "There but for the grace of God..."

woah, woah, woah, so Roger Waters is God now?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I luv Ozzy.

stephen morris, Monday, 9 February 2004 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh to take that out of context.

wow. I bow.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

If Warren Zevon wins this . . . oh, he did. Wotta shock.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

so Roger Waters is God now?

Never would I be happier to be a blasphemer in that case.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

whoa! they gave it to the dead guy! shocka & stuff.

Kingfish Funyun (Kingfish), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

pray! pray on stage, kid!

Kingfish Funyun (Kingfish), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to point out that I said that on post #420, as well, so I believe I can claim my title as Master and Supreme Ruler of the Universe and All It's Creatures.

stephen morris, Monday, 9 February 2004 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it me, or is there something oddly morbid about having Ozzy give an award in honor of Warren Zevon?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Ozzy is awesome.

The Warren Zevon record was pretty darn good though. But yeah, sympathy vote etc.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i was waiting for "and the fucking award goes to..."

tricky disco (disco stu), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

*pause* "SHARON! Can't read this."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that one's just you, Michael.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it me, or is there something oddly morbid about having Ozzy give an award in honor of Warren Zevon?

I'd rather note the Bark At The Moon/"Werewolves Of London" connection.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm starting to get that lurid schadenfreude thing, hoping that Best Album somehow goes to Evanescence so that the Grammy's hopes of building up a "year of hip-hop" tribute show end up sabotaged by the 93-year-old voters of the Academy.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Ozzy ruled the roost. "And the grammy goes to..." "Me!" Rad.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha wtf the 93-year-old GOTH-METAL fans?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

well... yeah. I meant the 93-year-old racists, but whatevah...

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

... oh, and the 93-year-old fans of Christian rock.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Berio and Lou Harrison get honored...kinda surprising, that.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

oh what the fuck. Lauryn Hill won big time. Frankly if goth-metal won best album that would be WAY more unprecedented than Outkast.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean has a metal act EVER won Best album?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"SO, let me get this straight. Prince plays a medley and it's embarrassing. The White Stripes play a medley and they're automatically the best performance of the night? Jesus, I'm glad I'm not a rockist.
Prince played a medly of TWENTY YEAR OLD MATERIAL."

The White Stripes play a medly of 40 year old material.

You're missing the point, as always. I wasn't speaking disrespectfully of Prince. Quite the oppposite, in fact. I find it sad that they didn't allow him to perform alone (he certainly doesn't need Beyonce). THAT's the pathetic part, that he wasn't treated with more reverance.

The White Stripes are a completely separate issue, you paranoid popist!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, Alex, isn't this a bit like arguing after the party moved on?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Zevon tribute with his recorded voice and backing chorus sung by - his son, Alison Krauss, Emmylou, Billy Bob, Dwight Yoakam, Jackson Browne, and who was the other guy? Chris Whitley? Someone else I'm missing?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

So, I stopped watching after Celine's mic problem moment to go watch "the Forsyte Saga" on PBS. Did I miss much?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I was being cutely polemical, but you're right. Goth hasn't ever won a best album trophy. ON the other hand... Evanescence isn't exactly NIN or Primal Scream or whatevah else.

Elliot Smith was... punk?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Timothy B. Schmidt?

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Jorge Calderon, one of his collaborators over the past fifteen years (maybe more) and a great guy

x-post - this is answering "who was the other guy in the Warren Z. tribute"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Now that we've moved on a bit, you, too, are right Alex. The Grammys have a huge schism between kowtowing to pop music ancient history and pretending to like what's new and fresh. It is a bit ridiculous. But I was just happy to see Prince dance again, that's all.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the long-haired guy looked like Timothy B. Schmidt, but surely he's older now?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

meh. time to switch to "Home Movies" on Adult Swim...

Kingfish Funyun (Kingfish), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, I know Theismann and Piscopo, but who were the other two guys?

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

?! What, is it a 1983 tribute or something?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

That Forsyte Saga, like everything else on PBS these days, is terrible. Dress-up soap opera.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

From the presence of Andy Williams, I sense there's gonna be a industry speech.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Or maybe not.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, we don't have Michael Greene to kick around anymore, do we?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

No Ned - they weren't on the show, they were in a commercial featuring "Joes". You aren't watching? You missed the Cult Hero commercial again!

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

shit yeah linda perry's hair!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh Richard Marx is still with Cynthia Rhoads, that makes me happy.

LiquidTide (LiquidTide), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Broheems: heh, strange. My TV is essentially a video monitor and I like it that way.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Marx Beats Mathers!

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

they're only showing skinny pictures of luther vandross.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

he is beautiful, no matter what you say.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

HERE'S the industry speech.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Anti-file trading?

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Arts funding! Wow.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"weapons of mass education"?

Kingfish Funyun (Kingfish), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The record industry IS a big family...a big dysfunctional family where everybody gets drunk and fights during Christmas.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay, it;s pro-school music education spending. Wouldn't it be cool if Chad and Pharrell contributed a bunch of cash, seeing how they met in band or something?

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

And a not-so-veiled slam on Bush.

Oh, and here's the anti-file trading part.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"we will re-invent and review that which requires change"

oh go fucking die already

Kingfish Funyun (Kingfish), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

PSA: "BUY OUR RECORDS YOU CHEAP FUCKS."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.whatsthedownload.com/

teeny (teeny), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Nevermind, it's also about stealing music on the internet. Wait, and they're trying to get people to link the two. I hate this shit.

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

pink pink pink, what the hell.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

what does that commercial even mean???

teeny (teeny), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

What a crap ad campaign.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

the Oscars don't pull this type of shit

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

yet

Kingfish Funyun (Kingfish), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

haha have you seen the anti-piracy trailers that run before movies lately?

teeny (teeny), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The problem is that I know a bunch of people who'd GLADLY and DELIGHTEDLY rob the Happenin' Youth Culture Club of its music.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

PSST . . . It's file COPYING, guys.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Alright. This "Hip-Hop sweeps the top 4 Grammy categories" easy headline is one award away from total destruction. So this statement from the Grammy mouthpiece...

"we will re-invent and review that which requires change"

seems extraordinarily ironic. These Grammys are the same as they've ever been.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

that site is slow as fuck, I don't think they were prepared for the traffic. Or they're already getting DOS attacked.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

dude is that a dong?

teeny (teeny), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh the hilarity

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, this is fucking weird.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just thinking how I needed to hear "Hey Ya" yet again...

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, somebody is REALLY high right now...

...and he's singing

Kingfish Funyun (Kingfish), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

From whatsthedownload.com:

"We all love music. We listen to it at home. We bring it with us on the run. We share experiences through it. But lately there's been lots of noise about music, how we get it and what we do with it. That's why you're here. WhatsTheDownlaod.com is a place for music lovers to visit. To learn. To chat. To get info. To be heard. To get answers. To understand that there's so much more to music than meets our ears."

Yes, they misspelled "download" in that URL.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

close encounters of the third kind, i'm telling you!

tricky disco (disco stu), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Not to mention utterly un-P.C. Is he lip-syncing? You can't see his mouth!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

TUSK!

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it wrong that i find this performance strangely horny.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

USC marching band?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

okay, the marching band all doing The Robot TOTALLY makes this all worthwhile...

Kingfish Funyun (Kingfish), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hey Ya!" is OutKast's "Tusk"!

xpost

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The dancers are FINE.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha -- J. totally OTM!!

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

(x-post -- about "Tusk" I meant)

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

That should render all of the "Speakerboxx/Love Below" / "Tusk" comparisons nobody was making moot.

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I just conceived Andre's child through the TV.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

What, the dancers weren't fine?

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Phew!

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

OUTKAST WINS!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The Hidden Cameras wuz robbed!!!

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Andre is wearing some mix of Macho Man Randy Savage & Ultimate Warrior get-up

Kingfish Funyun (Kingfish), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

So are all the people who bitched about Coldplay happy now?

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha--most of the posts on the What's the Download? message board are pro filesharing, and some people even know what they're talking about legally/historically.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, that would have been awesome if he took out that piece of paper held it up and said "Thank you."

Carey (Carey), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

at this point, i need to share this image with all of you.

Kingfish Funyun (Kingfish), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, how about l.a. reid?

teeny (teeny), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

ya smell me?

tricky disco (disco stu), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Justice prevails. Good night!

J (Jay), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

OH YEAH, L.A. Reid. Payback's a bitch.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get it. what's the story with LA reid?

Kingfish Funyun (Kingfish), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

This should clarify a few things re: LA Reid.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I know everybody here hate "Hey Ya" but I thought that was completely awesome

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

It's pretty bizarre that they don't even bother to list all the Grammys for "genres nobody cares about". Like, in the old days they'd at least scroll them before going to commercial. How will I rest without knowing who won the best jazz album Grammy?

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

God, the local news is still all about THA BOOB.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get it. what's the story with LA reid?

He was recently ousted as president of Arista. OutKast, a band he had ushered for a decade make good. (X-posted)

Vic Funk, Monday, 9 February 2004 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been on the fence about "Hey Ya" for a while but I think the performance pushed me towards on the side of "it's good."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I still contend that the Hey Ya hating is fun-hate at it's finest (read: least fine).

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know that that was directed at me, of course, but I wasn't bitching, per se, about Coldplay winning Record of the Year. I was simply amused that, at least until the Album trophy, it seemed clear that even though the "blue-ribbon panel" that shapes the nominees for the top categories really liked hip-hop this year, the voting body at large... didn't.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

This should clarify a few things re: LA Reid.

oh ya

Kingfish Funyun (Kingfish), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Ya also has a slightly tricky time signature, which is always a mean feat in a pop tune.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I also like that with "stank you, stank you. you're smell-come" André put himself in the company of FUNK instead of hip-hop.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Also: My brother, who was downloading music, turned to me and said in a completely serious tone "Oh my god... a club just shut down."

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

exactly. an odd 6/4 measure needs to be more popular in pop.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Also: My brother, who was downloading music, turned to me and said in a completely serious tone "Oh my god... a club just shut down."

You lost me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

And Clive Davis is back in charge of Arista, if my half-paying-attention to 60 Minutes was right.

nickn (nickn), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Now that it's all said and done. Is there any reason to be hatin' on "Hey Ya," Coldplay's politics, Timbalake's rhodes-playing, or Linda Perry's hair when we got the honor of hearing Dave Matthews howl his way through a Beatles tune? I might have only gotten a few predictions right, but that Beatles number being the flat-out lowest of the low points (so bad it was bad) was a prediction I nailed.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The phrase "there's more to music than meets the ear" is all too ripe for détournment.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

You lost me.

The PSA had a swingin' dance club that went dark once a girl finished her illegal download. (It's an even less convincing youf-oriented PSA than those thetruth.com ones!)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh that's beautiful. I want to find the person who scripted that and rub their face in crunchy underwear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

dude I was NOT hating on Linda Perry's hair.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus Matthews got the damn lyrics wrong, the moron.

The only thing I would have changed was to have Coldplay endorse Al Sharpton instead of John Kerry.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i would have had Al Sharpton & John Kerry dance during the last number.

Kingfish Funyun (Kingfish), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I dinnt say you were! No one probably was... I was just going down a list of things I liked about the Grammys that I figured might be getting hate. Pre-emptive hate-hating.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Has "Hey Ya" shown up at the primaries yet? I swear I heard it at one of the John Kerry wins.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Should I be worried about posting something on whatsthedownload.com, even if I'm using a fake e-mail address to do so?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 9 February 2004 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't watch, but, uh, I read this. ALL OF IT.
Mind you, it only took 25 minutes.
Nothing to say actually, just didn't want to think that I read all of the above for nothing, but, uh, let's face it...

that really was members of the USC marching band backing for hey ya, rendering the tusk comparisons even more...comparable. Did anyone else think the Staples Center was a weird place to have the Grammys?

Todd Everlasting (Todde), Monday, 9 February 2004 07:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Adrian is funny
That whole 'let's give out 2 lifetime achievement awards, then a real award' was awkward. "Speaking of unique geniuses..." How many times was the phrase 'Jazz Legend' used in that bitch? Still, best grammies ever obv. Andre's kid put it over the top.

Sym (shmuel), Monday, 9 February 2004 07:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Blount! You should have been here for play-by-play man! You smell me?

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I officially am a Justin Timberlake fan now.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Monday, 9 February 2004 08:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Justin was great - really enjoyed it. It was cool that he did "Senorita" instead of one of the bigger hits. And he held his own on the piano! not too shabby!

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 08:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i only barely watched it! i hope robert randolph gets a boost - discovering him almost made dealing with my sister's jambandfandom worth it. i liked the funk tribute, esp. the lil jon shoutout, though the going into the crowd part reminds you what a (the) huge problem with awards shows - the audience. kenny loggins and a bunch of accountants. i enjoyed white stripes too. i boycotted the probowl cuz of simeon rice (literally the only pro-bowl 'moment' i can recall is barry switzer eating them hotdogs). curb your enthusiasm was incredible, chappelle show (which i'm totally sold on now) was incredible too, the thing with him and john mayer shoulda been in the grammys.
oh i liked andre3000 overreacting to whatever suit told him 'i've liked you guys ever since stankonia!' backstage. and i really really liked the l.a. reid luv - at least 90% of any impact atlanta has had on the radio is due to him.

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 9 February 2004 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - yeah, Andre's whole "Stankonia was not our first record!" thing was kind of bizarre and sweet at the same time.

Yeah, it sucked with the Pro Bowl conflict. But I was able to switch over and see the end. Awesome! Vanderjagt misses a 50-yarder that coulda sent it into overtime! Would have been the best Pro Bowl ever! But noooooo, mr. alcoholic has to miss the fucker

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been on the fence about "Hey Ya" for a while but I think the performance pushed me towards on the side of "it's good."

yeah, me too

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

also, the funk thing was really good--you know it's good when P-Funk is the worst part! too bad Prince was so fucking boring and perfunctory

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 08:42 (twenty-two years ago)

oh now i don't feel so bad for missing that

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 9 February 2004 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, it turned into Chicago the musical on us. bzzzzt.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 08:49 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - i sorta converted back to 'yes' on 'hey ya!' when i found out it was origininally titled 'ingrediants of a pimp' and that andre conceived it as a pro-sex without luv anthem - my kinda feelgood hit. there was a story in the ajc about the making of the album that was good (they also had a sidebar with people's opinions on outkast, including patterson hood - who once wrote the local alt-weakly a letter slamming them for trife's 'cloth eared' outkast review - and the increasingly upiquitous dizzee rascal), big boi has a funk album coming out under the alias 'hot tub tony'. (i never actually was 'no' on 'hey ya!' i was just sick to fuck of hearing it - something the gramcrue seemed to acknowledge by favoring 'the way you move' - though maybe that was just "well it's number one now" - and 'think you've heard 'hey ya'? stick around!' which seemed to acknowledge 'yeah everybody's sick of it but RUH-RUH-RUH-REEEEEEMIIIIIIIX').

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 9 February 2004 08:50 (twenty-two years ago)

(the Prince/Beyonce thing, I mean)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 08:50 (twenty-two years ago)

it was "think you've SEEN" "Hey Ya," and they were pretty much right.

absolute all-time best moment of evening:
ANNOUNCER: "In the house, Snoop Dogg!"

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

last week (during the Super Bowl halftime show, no less) I commented to my ladyfriend that I thought "Hey Ya" would be better as a high school marching band staple. Glad to see that my vision is becoming a reality.

hstencil, Monday, 9 February 2004 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

(the way announcer said "In the house!" was SO ENTHUSIASTIC, it was amazing)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i also kinda lied about boycotting the probowl - i did catch enough flipping by to see peyton get sacked and to think "it ain't gonna get any better than that".

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 9 February 2004 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

the bassline just reminds me of tubas.

Thank god Blount means Payton Manning not Walter Peyton.

hstencil, Monday, 9 February 2004 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - my bad! (walter peyton = greatest football player of all time)

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 9 February 2004 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

oh god, agreed about Sweetness. As a Detroit Lions fan, he was an arch-nemesis. But nobody was better. Not even my beloved Barry Sanders. Walter was beautiful. Poetry.

Also, weirdly I totally agree with everyone about "Hey Ya"! I was totally thinking that while I viewed the performance; before reading everyone's reactions on the thread. Like, "you know what? this song is pretty goddam alright!" It's "The Way You Move" that pisses me off now!!

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

haha!

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 9 February 2004 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Have the Grammys' stabs at tribute "blockbusters" performances ever been so distressingly far apart in their quality? Whereas the funk thing was by far the best thing I've seen on the Grammys in the last five years probably the Beatles tribute was easily the worst.

Yes, Matos. The Prince thing was sort of a wash. At least he danced. If it had to be Purple Rain resurrection, a nice slow build on "The Beautiful Ones" would have been preferable.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

amazing that the closest thing to a Lennon in that Beatles tribute was playing Ringo.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to see Pharell shake his hair. (... like a polaroid picture.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm totally straight but I'm also in love with Pharell. I would have gay sex with him in a heartbeat. That guy is something else.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

also, Matos, you really didn't like the Prince thing at all?

I dunno, it certainly wasn't mind-blowing, but gosh it was sort of nice to see him just out there, you know? Like, in people's faces; maybe he'll decide to actually make some records with real, relevant performers now! This could be a great thing for him!! Also he played some nice guitar! "Baby I'm A Star"!! That's not exactly a huge single from the record! Nice choice!

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I think even the non-singles from Purple Rain were pretty massive hits, weren't they? (maybe not "Computer Blue")

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, "the beautiful ones" was definitely ALL over the radio and "baby i'm a star" was played with "i would die 4 u" more often than not. the only traxx i don't remember getting radio were "computer blue" and "darling nikki" obv.

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

No, you're right Eric - we all know Purple Rain like the back of our hand. But at the same time, if the guy is gonna do a medley of like, four songs, you would assume he would just perform the most popular hits. HE didn't do that. He didn't play "When Doves Cry", certainly the biggest hit from the record. Seeing him perform "Baby I'm A Star" was thrilling and satisfying, as far as this Prince fan is concerned..

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

This from abc news online:

Meanwhile, CBS and Jackson offered conflicting reports about why she was not at the show, which was televised on a five-minute delay to avoid anything like the Super Bowl incident.

CBS said it agreed to allow Timberlake and Jackson to participate as long as they apologized on the air for their Super Bowl stunt. But a statement from Jackson's camp said CBS and the Grammys first asked her not to attend, then reversed themselves and re-invited her, but she chose not to go.

Timberlake took the CBS offer. He performed on several songs and won two trophies: male pop vocal performance for "Cry Me a River" and pop vocal album for "Justified."

Onstage, he made another mea culpa for the Super Bowl boo-boo.

"I know it's been a rough week on everybody," he said, stifling a self-deprecating smile while the audience laughed. "What occurred was unintentional, completely regrettable, and I apologize if you guys are offended."

Justin's performance was pretty good, but I like Janet's reaction to this alleged extortion better.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't think much of it. He seemed to be sleepwalking, to be fulfilling his obligation as professionally as possible, and not any more than that. I've seen him a few times, and he's always--always--radiated a joy for performing that was missing here.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean Paul should have been able to sing his own damn song. I'm still totally pissed off about that one. Complete garbage on the producers.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

But he danced!!!

Oh, and "Baby I'm a Star" is my favorite track on PR except for "Beautiful Ones" and "I Would Die 4 U."

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 9 February 2004 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

As much as I liked seeing Prince perform with Beyonce, and making the discovery that out of Madonna, Michael, and Prince; that he is now the most sane of the three, I have to agree with Matos. Even playing songs he has performed thousands of times, he normally comes across happy to just be on stage making music. I have to admit I actually wish he interrupted the medley to make a speech about the theocratic order- at least it would have showed he had some spark.

Jedmond, Monday, 9 February 2004 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

when's this on uk tv?

piscesboy, Monday, 9 February 2004 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

dude I was NOT hating on Linda Perry's hair.

I am. Wendy O. Williams shall rise from the grave and HAVE HER REVENGE!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I also thought the OutKast performance was positively celestial (I especially liked the fact that the d.j. in the rear was wearing a full-on Indian chief headdress!)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I was so drunk I actually kinda enjoyed the Sean Paul/Sting thing.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe Prince was just grumpy he didn't win at the pre-telecast.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Linda Perry's hair was the most excitng moment of the evening. LOVE HER. (Ned, spare me the "I just don't get it.")

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

She was in 4 Non Blondes, you know.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeanne, please don't take this the wrong way, but is there a female performer you don't love?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

So where was Moby in all of this?

ModJ (ModJ), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, haha, yes, plenty. Though I'm not sure there's a female punk dyke I don't love...

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Fair enough then (though I bristle at the thought of Linda Perry being called a "punk").

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Gwen Stefani, Ashanti, Britney, can only take Patti Smith in small doses, Fiona Apple, not bowled over by Karen O, Sahara Hotnights are fine but not fab... (stop me whenever you want)

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex In NYC and Jeanne Fury not-hatched-from-the-same-punk-egg-to-say-the-least shockah.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

God! The Sahara Hotnights! They just kinda vanished suddenly didn't they!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Gwen Stefani, Ashanti, Britney, can only take Patti Smith in small doses, Fiona Apple, not bowled over by Karen O, Sahara Hotnights are fine but not fab... (stop me whenever you want)

These are the ones you don't like, right? Kudos for recognizing the undercookedness of Patti Smith's "art."

I'm starting to like Karen O more than I used'ta.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I am, too, funnily enough. Though I still haven't warmed up to Cat Power, Fiery Furnaces, Deerhoof... okay, I'll stop. As an aside, I think Patti was critical in helping to develop punk, but I'm just not a tremendous fan of every single thing she's touched.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, spare me the "I just don't get it."

I haven't to my knowledge looked at an image of her in a while so if you're talking about the hair, whatever floats yer boat!

Her as a creative act, well let's not go there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Cat Power bores me to tears. Have yet to hear the Fiery Furnaces. Deerhoof...well, it's interesting in a sort've "halloween sound effects" record kinda way.

Patti Smith.....let's just not go there.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

sounds like moments of this show aped ones of THIS particular show...

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm wondering if I'm just getting old and uncool, but that was basically the best grammy show ever. Bands I'm generally lukewarm about really knocked me out. White Stripes were SATANICALLY good.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I think, at the very least, it was the best Grammy year for performances that I've personally ever witnessed.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 9 February 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, they were just discussing this on MSNBC, but I don't remember seeing it: Did Beyonce and Prince really engage in a bit of a tug of war with the microphone? Did he really snap it away from her?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Why is Xtina trying to look like Julia Louis-Dreyfus?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 9 February 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Xtina looked cute . . . from the neck up, anyway. you coulda parked a car in that cleavage gap, though.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, George Clinton in having the least interesting performance in the funkathon SHOCKER

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 9 February 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

This year's show was SO much better than last year's

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 9 February 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

, Dave Grohl is going to play drums in the Return to Forever reunion.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG what the fuck song did they do? Which RTF was it? I hope Dave was rockin' with Al diMeola.

This sounds like the best Grammy awards ever, I'm crushed that I missed it.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 9 February 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, I think that was a joke?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

DAMN IT. That's what I get for skimming massive threads.

Oh well, does anyone know who actually won for best jazz album? It better have been Dave Holland...it would have been fantastic to have the DH5 perform and have to squeeze all the fire into 3 minutes, someone would have imploded.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos, you kill me with how similar our minds work. I wrote something to the effect of "You could've driven a Buick between Xtina's boobs" in my round-up (which hasn't been posted yet damnitalltohell).

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Christina shoulda stuck with the pant-suit, she looked great in that.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

PICTURES PLEASE.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot about Mary's Big Bird outfit! my coworker Neal: "How many Muppets died to make that?"

xpost: Alex, there's nowhere near enough space between the boobs for it to be her, sorry dude.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

haha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

A serious Christina pic:

Nice nipple shield.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

that's more like it. I did like the dress and the hair, but the cleavage is unsettling.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, they are someone...ummm...separate, aren't they.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Wardrobe provided by Kleenex®

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 9 February 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, somewhat...

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I suspect my last post has officially made me Part of the Problem. I shall speak no more of this.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"Christina shoulda stuck with the pant-suit, she looked great in that."
glad im not the only one who thought that. i was beginning to doubt my sexuality.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Monday, 9 February 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

They have just postponed the tape-delayed broadcast of the Grammies in Germany for a live performance by...

...wait for it...

DAVID HASSELHOFF!!!

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I am no longer sure if I love Germany or not.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, it's on now. That's Rhonda Smith playing bass with Prince; she's fucking awesome and looks nothing like Wendy or Lisa.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, Big Boi just thanked "the Most High". The German translator said he thanked "Moe Seifert".

I'm moving to Austria in a few months.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, I like that translation.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get the White Stripes love -- to me, they sounded like George Thoroughgood and the Destroyers with the guy from the Darkness singing.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I posted five Grammy questions on another thread:

three grammy questions....

But you can answer them wherever you want. If you want.

chuck, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get the White Stripes love --

Oh yeah, but Prince dueting with Beyonce....that's groundbreaking, isn't it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

No, 'cause I think Beyonce's got a completely anonymous voice -- but Prince and band were pretty damn good.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The Beatles, funk, and Zevon tributes all got the big scissors, but Sting playing "Roxanne" on a stage where, as if by coincidence, Sean Paul was also toasting made the cut. To bed, then.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)
