"The Average ILMer"

This has come up a lot, both on the boards and off (in blogs and correspondence, for instance): the idea that there is a "typical" ILM poster. Obviously there can be certain kinds of groupthink about different topics here (and there are certainly artists that appeal to and/or spark a lot of debate among a number of folks on here--Luomo, Dizzee, the Streets are three examples), but the facelessness of the board has something to do with this I think--the idea that it's all one collective hivemind pervades even the people involved to some degree, I think. So let's reduce it to an exercise with the possibility of expanding (do whichever you wish): Describe the average ILMer according to the broadest stereotypes you can.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The Hivemind Concept, right or wrong, is shaped by the Big Personaes here -- the ones that stick out, you know, due to their, um, opinions and how those opinions are delivered.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

point fingers, you

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

absolutely, yes. no question about that.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

but what I REALLY want is a Dewar's Profile of the Average ILMer

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

chronic masturbator

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

the average ILM'er listens to whatever Ned Raggett says. religiously.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

not one or two little one-liners, a whole written-out profile, please! (I'll work on one when I get back from lunch)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

okay, IF I didn't know better I'd say:

- hates indie rock/undie rap
- overrates some pop music
- thinks Outkast is mediocre
- alt country = no good
- Pitchfork: Worse than Rolling Stone
- Christgau = Shakespeare

but that's just a general stereotype that has no relation to reality, right guys?

right? =[

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

If that is true then I am the anti-ILM.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

the average ILM'er listens to whatever Ned Raggett says. religiously.

Thank you -- check's in the mail.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

hivemind idea exists because the "um opinions" aren't just your standard toss on 90 percent of the other messageboards.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

sweeping generalization:

prone to sweeping generalizations
slightly cliquish
prone to overreliance on lit criticism as model for music criticism
secretly agrees with c/man
doesn't shave as much as they should (male or female)
in denial about JT's utter craptitude
thinks Thor could whoop Superman's butt

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i guess the average ilm'er has alot of time on their hands to write essays on everything. this excludes me as i post from work and can only really squeeze in quick comments before i have to dysapear.

i also get the impression most ilmers loath any music writting that is not their own.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

in denial about JT's utter craptitude

Don't come at me with your pop-freudisms!!!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Poorly phrased there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

besides, I meant Jethro Tull

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

also: lerves lists.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

besides, I meant Jethro Tull

Oh, then the phrasing was perfectly accurate:

http://www.markglinsky.com/tull2.jpg

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they might just possibly be male.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The average ILMer enjoys coming repeatedly.

maypang (maypang), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

dont forget steely dan

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I know most of y'all adore lists, beyond that I don't care to make any generalizations.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

And enjoys the possibilty that, in describing themselves as an ILMer, someone might mistakenly think they work for George Lucas.

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

the average ILMer links images from other sites and doesn't credit San Francisco-based amateur photographers properly.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

LC, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, Gear!

maypang (maypang), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, Gear! show me the link!!! was it Virgil Porter?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

- overrates some pop music

Are we going by international fixed standards here?

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

haha I was talking about Mr_Steve our brief and unpleasant ILE SF photographer friend :(

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

link please!!!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The difference between the average ILMer and the average person I know in real life is that the ILMer considers 1978-82 to be the greatest ever years for music, and the real lifer thinks they're the worst.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you definitely have something, there.

Thea, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

this?

New York City is for sellouts

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

deleone OTM!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe dleone- following from that, much of ILM seems to be anti-canon (which means 'they' like whatever 'they' like, so there's no typical ILMer).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it the opposite for 1971-76?

maypang (maypang), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The average ILMer has a blog which links almost exclusively to other ILMer blogs.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

a trekker without the b.o.

kephm, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe we could make one of those online quiz things to know which prototypical ILXer you are....

Jon Williams in brrrrrrrrrrrRochester! (ex machina), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

a trekker without the b.o.

"without"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

prone to sweeping generalizations
True. I am the king of overly broad statements.
slightly cliquish
Inapplicable. Not sure what this means.
prone to overreliance on lit criticism as model for music criticism
False. Lit Crit, Schmit Crit. I'm not interested in whether the rekkid in question goes with red or white wine. I just want someone to tell me how it sounds and if they like it or not.
secretly agrees with c/man
Mostly False. Although I have no personal beef against his fave bands, I don't think Oasis/Sleeper/Echobelly are thre greatest thing since sliced bread. I don't have a sexual quirk about Alison Moyet. I don't think that either Brits or Yanks are automatically better musicians just because of their nationality. I do think that Guns and Roses and the Smiths are equally good.
doesn't shave as much as they should (male or female)
True. But this is only because I need to go to the store and get a new pack of razors.
in denial about JT's utter craptitude
Inapplicable. JT?
thinks Thor could whoop Superman's butt
False. Although Superman is vulnerable to magic, and therefore vulnerable to "Mjolnir"; I'm also very sure that Superman is more than capable of catching the hammer in mid-flight and weilding it himself. And if (assuming the rules from the 1960s to 1980s are in effect) this transfers "Thors Power" to Superman. Making him Super-Thor!
Be afraid, be very afraid.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I know in real life is that the ILMer considers 1978-82 to be the greatest ever years for music, and the real lifer thinks they're the worst.
Well, that tears it then. Real lifers are finks with no taste.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't consider 1978-82 the greatest years for music by a long shot

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

b-but, that's when numan did his best stuff

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Let x = Numan

X = MC squared.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd say it was 1977-1992 for the underground stuff, and 1981-1987 for the overground stuff.
Granted bits of 1994 and 1998 were cool, too.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Ian Anderson has better legs than Justin Timberlake.

So there is the Average ILMer (who is a white male between the ages of 21 to 29 who love/s/d indie rock but now is maybe getting sorta curious about this hip-hop/pop thing and is probably under/un/employed and thus has plenty of time to hang out on message boards and argue about the Village Voice or the NME) and THEN there is the perception of the Average ILMer a/k/a the ILM mafia (who archtypically represented by Jess for Americans and Tom for Brits.)

I know I'm a little guy--don't post that often, get replied to less, have started precious few threads (one?)--but part of the appeal is that there ISN'T that much overlap between me and you folks. It helps me get into all kinds of new crap, which is fun.

The great thing about this place is that among all the threads with pointless one-line jokes numbering in the dozens... there are some fucking FASCINATING reads here--great arguements, not flamewars. That's pretty rare.

But yeah, Supes is weak against magic--Thor whups 'im. 'Nuff said, true believers!

i does seem that some Brits [n.southall, momus, stewart] do not know what pazz & jop is.

pazz & jop 2003
http://www.villagevoice.com/specials/pazznjop/03/

[a music poll organised by Village Voice magazine, that certain Americans on ILM take far too seriously re: predictions and analysis of results]

i suppose i should have given a parallel brit oriented option: NME albums of the year - when many Brits every year moan at the rubbish selection of albums chosen by NME writers.

or maybe analyse the poor selections for the much maligned Mercury Music Prize shortlist, every year.

jonviachicago, Thursday, 27 January 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

This is just my personal bias but when I think of a stereotypical ilm poster I think of some dude that:

-lives in his parent's basement
-is proud of his complete collection of Guides By Voices albums and singles
-reads Pitchfork religiously, if only to bitch about it on ilm later
-thinks girls are icky

Now, 90% of the people who post on ilm aren't like this at all. But when I think of the people who make ilm a tedious place to be, this is the sort of guy I picture.

24-35. 34.
Has had sex with around five people. God. I consider myself practically monastic when it comes to gay men, but even *I* have had more than that, easily.
Drinks, maybe smokes socially, inc. pot I drink socially, which is to say once every couple months. I don't smoke unless I'm drunk. I shouldn't even be drinking or smoking right now because they give heart palpitations. Only had weed maybe four times in my life, the last time being in 2000 or so, and MAN I'd love some.
Works in either computers or something tangentially related to the entertainment industry. Nope. The design industry.
Out of shape. Was running three times a week most of last year, but lost my momentum once I pulled a muscle and the cold weather came in. Hope to resume soon.
In debt/still paying student loans. Dad paid for college. Credit card debt is under control. I have a mortgage, too, but I don't think that's what the question is getting at. Credit card debt is under control.
Attended at least one Lollapalooza. Two: 1994 and 1995.
Has worn an ironic t-shirt at some point in his or her life, AND then later decried ironic t-shirts. I think the closest thing I ever had to an ironic t-shirt was a replica of the t-shirts worn by Little Leaguers in Wantagh, New York. Wantagh's only a mile or two -- in fact, I may have seen them play my brothers' team, though I don't really know -- so I bought it because it reminded me of home. Does that count?
Grew up in a suburb of a major city. Long Island, baby.
Born between 1973 - 1979 Sort of redundant, no? 1971.
Has a blog... Several, in fact. If I'm lucky, I'll finally be able to update one of them tonight.
...which links almost exclusively to other ILMer blogs. It barely links to anyone at all: the links page only has NYLPM, Josh Blog, jonno.com, and my mom's site.
Lives in a City / large suburban commuter town/ urban area. Yorkville in Manhattan.
Has got tickets for The Pixies Reunion. Wouldn't even consider it.
Takes Pazz & Jop far too seriously. I take P&J "too seriously" the way a fashion designer might take the fall season "too seriously."
Makes nerdy CD-R compilations on a theme. You don't know the half of it.
Reads Pitchfork daily [even though they may disagree with the overall tone] I have no real beef with it, but I never read it, either.
Male [let's face there a more men on ILM than women] Yeah.
Likes 90s dance music such as Orbital, The Chemical Brothers and Leftfield. Can't remember a single Leftfield song; otherwise, guilty as charged.
Still listens to Joy Division Apart from the "hit(s)" I never really began listening to them in the first place.
Thinks NME these days is rubbish aimed at teenagers hyperbolic, but not exclusively for teens, and not everything for teens is rubbish I'm American, so I don't even see the NME around much. I think anything aimed exclusively at a very specific age demographic, young or old, is completely retarded.

24-35. just turned 33 in fact
Has had sex with around five people. more than that
Drinks, maybe smokes socially, inc. drink like a fish, do not smoke, and that's about it besides the occasional pill these days
Works in either computers or something tangentially related to the entertainment industry. not at present, but did spend 3 years in IT in a previous life
Out of shape. no, not particularly.
In debt/still paying student loans. yeah, some decently sized revolving debt.
Attended at least one Lollapalooza. two, including the first.
Has worn an ironic t-shirt at some point in his or her life, AND then later decried ironic t-shirts. I honestly can't say I've done this. I like all my T-shirts. I've never really done the thrift store thing.
Grew up in a suburb of a major city. Nope -- rural, baby.
Born between 1973 - 1979 '72
Has a blog, which links almost exclusively to other ILMer blogs. Yeah, guilty; just started it tho.
Lives in a City / large suburban commuter town/ urban area. City.
Has got tickets for The Pixies Reunion. Nope. Saw 'em twice back in the day and they were GREAT the first time and SUCKED the second time, and that is enough for me.
Takes Pazz & Jop far too seriously. Why would I? There are no Jazz or World or Improv or Modern Classical records that ever even sniff the upper regions. It's IMPOSSIBLE to take seriously.
Makes nerdy CD-R compilations on a theme. not really.
Reads Pitchfork daily [even though they may disagree with the overall tone] Never read it, unless it's the subject of a thread and someone links something. Never even heard of it before discovering ILM honestly.
Male [let's face there a more men on ILM than women]. Yup
Likes 90s dance music such as Orbital, The Chemical Brothers and Leftfield. NO. Hate all of that British garbage. I love house and techno though.
Still listens to Joy Division Of course.
Thinks NME these days is rubbish aimed at teenagers hyperbolic, but not exclusively for teens, and not everything for teens is rubbish Never read NME, couldn't care less.
Read Select magazine in the early/ mid 90s [if British] or if American - Spin. Grew up on Spin in the 80s; Leland, McNeil, Kogan, Eddy, Sheffield, Coley, etc.

Takes Pazz & Jop far too seriously. Stopped paying attention to those a decade ago.
Makes nerdy CD-R compilations on a theme. Yeah, i've done that.
Reads Pitchfork daily [even though they may disagree with the overall tone] I've only read Pitchfork when it's been linked via ILM, like when Cris Ott said some thoroughly unfounded things about a Cop Shoot Cop album, rendering the entire website completely and entirely moot.
Male [let's face there a more men on ILM than women] Yes
Likes 90s dance music such as Orbital, The Chemical Brothers and Leftfield. Never was wild about the Chemical Bros, but yes to the others.
Still listens to Joy Division: Why the fuck wouldn't I? They made brilliant, timeless music that was both elegant and cruel. I'll be listening to Joy Division for the rest of my life, I'd wager.
Thinks NME these days is rubbish Haven't read it since the early 90's. I always preferred Melody Maker, actually. But, it's all shit, so who cares?

Drinks, maybe smokes socially, inc. pot - I was straightedge growing up, then hit the LSD pretty hard, now I'm kind of a stay at home nerd (hello ILM!) with occasional binges.
Works in either computers or something tangentially related to the entertainment industry. I make music that is tangentially related to entertainment.
Out of shape. - I'm not ripped, but I'm not out of shape.
In debt/still paying student loans. I am not in debt and don't have student loans, but I'm still in grad school.
Attended at least one Lollapalooza. Nope.
Has worn an ironic t-shirt at some point in his or her life, AND then later decried ironic t-shirts. My fave says "I'd rather be 40 than pregnant"; yesterday I wore my Uriah Heap shirt with the cool looking wizard on it. Irony isn't my primary concern, but it doesn't have to be such a bugbear either. . .
Grew up in a suburb of a major city Louisville, KY is pretty un-major, I reckon.
Born between 1973 - 1979 , nope, '71
Has a blog. No.
Lives in a City / large suburban commuter town/ urban area. SF
Has got tickets for The Pixies Reunion No, the reunion shows that had me all a-quiver this year were TG and Incredible String Band. They both ruled!
Takes Pazz & Jop far too seriously. I've never really read it; stumbled onto it once while web-surfing, and left quickly.
Makes nerdy CD-R compilations on a theme. Momus' answer was good: I make nerdy albums on a theme.
Reads Pitchfork daily [even though they may disagree with the overall tone] I am guilty, in more ways than one.
Male [let's face there a more men on ILM than women] Yes
Likes 90s dance music such as Orbital, The Chemical Brothers and Leftfield. I'm definitely down with 90s dance music, but that list isn't my cup of fur. It just sounds like the HMV singles bin circa the Criminal Justice Bill riots . . .
Still listens to Joy Division: yes, of course
Thinks NME these days is rubbish. I just don't read it so how would I know?

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

Is called Nick. Yes.
24-35. Ten years older.
Has had sex with around five people. Multiply by 20.
Drinks, maybe smokes socially, inc. pot. One beer at dinner, no smoke ever.
Works in either computers or something tangentially related to the entertainment industry. I make pop records, sound art, journalism. Not so tangential, really.
Out of shape. Not bad for my age.
In debt/still paying student loans. Permanent overdraft.
Attended at least one Lollapalooza. The 'truly detestable summer festival?' No.
Has worn an ironic t-shirt at some point in his or her life, AND then later decried ironic t-shirts. But of course! Resistance to fashion is also fashion.
Grew up in a suburb of a major city. 'The cities swept about me like dead leaves.' (Tennessee Williams)
Has a blog. Click Opera.
...which links almost exclusively to other ILMer blogs. Certainly not.
Lives in a City / large suburban commuter town/ urban area. Normally Berlin, currently Hakodate, Hokkaido (for a sound art project).
Has tickets for the Pixies reunion. Good grief, no. When is Sachiko M getting Cosmos back together? I'll get tickets for that.
Takes Pazz & Jop far too seriously. I don't think I've ever seen it. Might as well be on another planet. Don't care.
Makes nerdy CD-R compilations on a theme. That sort of describes my sound art project. The last one I made was of a Kleenex squeaking on a car window for an hour.
Reads Pitchfork daily [even though they may disagree with the overall tone]. I read it weekly. I think Pitchfork is generally rather good.
Male. Mm hmm. (Looks at watch, time to go to the university.)
Likes 90s dance music such as Orbital, The Chemical Brothers and Leftfield. I really, really hate that stuff. Especially when I have to live next door to people who play it.
Still listens to Joy Division.: Yes.
Thinks NME these days is rubbish aimed at teenagers. Absolutely.
Busts a nut for grime/crunk/big and rich/every kompakt release ever. Last time I was in London I heard an Asian kid playing some, back of a bus, top deck, and it sounded great. Anne Laplantine in Berlin has suddenly become a big grime fan, so perhaps I can ask her to make me a nerdy CD-R.
Alternately, busts a nut for vh1 classic's the alternative. I don't watch music television.
Doesn't actually know all that much about music released before 1979. I have big holes in my knowledge, but I love the past because it's a foreign country and we always need trips abroad.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

hey Drew Louisville is like top 15 now!

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

Oh god, have I answered this twice? How embarrassing! (Hello Drew!)

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

(I see in my 2004 answer I multiply the five sexual partners by 11 and in the 2005 answer I multiply it by 20. Which means I've had 45 partners in the past twelve months. I really must learn math... or get some sleep.)

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

(In video testimonial, Momus, looking tired, said 'It all depends what you mean by "by", sir. I'm not helping you because you're not helping me here.')

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

God, you're annoying.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

Actually, you may have hit on the defining feature of the average ILMer there. 'Is annoying'.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

I doubt anyone thinks of me as the typical ILMer simply bcuz I seem to get in fights with lots of people (although maybe that's more typical than not...) but here we go anyway.

24-35 21
Has had sex with around five people In the general area

Attended at least one Lollapalooza. Wouldn't have gone near it.
Has worn an ironic t-shirt at some point in his or her life, AND then later decried ironic t-shirts. I have a t-shirt that says "Bank of dad." I guess its ironic?

Male [let's face there a more men on ILM than women] uh-huh.
Likes 90s dance music such as Orbital, The Chemical Brothers and Leftfield. No. I probably should investigate it more.

Attended at least one Lollapalooza. 1995! Sonic Youth, Pavement, Beck, c'mon of course I went
Has worn an ironic t-shirt at some point in his or her life, AND then later decried ironic t-shirts. I've always felt somewhat weird about the idea of ironic t-shirts; that said, I have a thin yellow t-shirt that says GET HIGH ON QUALITY underneath a red hot-air balloon with the POST cereal logo on it, and I love it, but partially because it fits me so well
Grew up in a suburb of a major city Yup, 40 minutes outside Chicago.
Has a blog Coming up on two years.
...which links almost exclusively to other ILMer blogs Maybe half of my links are ILX-related
Lives in a City Chicago
Has tickets for the Pixies reunion. I like the Pixies okay, but I tend not to shell out my hard-earned for BIG SHOWS in BIG ARENAS because they mostly suck
Takes Pazz & Jop far too seriously. Yeah, probably.
Makes nerdy CD-R compilations on a theme. I do this every month for a variety show I host!
Reads Pitchfork daily [even though they may disagree with the overall tone] Guilty again. I don't read it top to bottom, usually just scan to see if there's a record I'm interested in or a review by a critic I like
Male [let's face there a more men on ILM than women] Y
Likes 90s dance music such as Orbital, The Chemical Brothers and Leftfield. Not really. I mean, not those three artists. I was mostly listening to Warp-ish stuff in the 90s
Still listens to Joy Division Never have. There's something about them I can't quite get past.
Thinks NME these days is rubbish aimed at teenagers hyperbolic, but not exclusively for teens, and not everything for teens is rubbish I have no idea; I'm American.
busts a nut for grime/crunk/big and rich/every kompakt release ever Oddly enough, I think you just named the typical ILM drool-genres that I'm mostly immune to (though with the exception of Big and Rich, I do like some stuff in each category)
alternately, busts a nut for vh1 classic's the alternative Don't have cable. Isn't this the Miccio clause, anyway?
doesn't actually know all that much about music released before 1979 ("not that that's a bad thing") Sad but true. I mean, I'm familiar with a lot of it, but it makes up a small part of my collection.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 28 January 2005 02:29 (twenty years ago)

Are the ILM Big Personaes (see top of thread) different from what they were? I am wondering if all is different here, now, from when I joined: which was c. February 2001.

two weeks pass...
24-35. 34, soon to be 35.
Has had sex with around five people. A bit more than that, actually.
Drinks, maybe smokes socially, inc. pot I don't drink much these days, though I'm not a teetotaller. I smoke cigarettes like a chimney, though. Haven't touched pot in, oh, 5 years.
Works in either computers or something tangentially related to the entertainment industry. I suppose the legal industry is "entertaining," if yer into sick humor and watching pompous twits make asses outta themselves (meself included).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 12 February 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

24-35.

Just turned thirty.

Has had sex with around five people.

Uh, closer to a dozen.

Drinks, maybe smokes socially, inc. pot

Social drinker and pot smoker. I drop an E maybe once every 2-3 months. Didn't try drugs or indulge in any hangover-inducing drinking until my late 20s.

Works in either computers or something tangentially related to the entertainment industry.

Day job: Selling and tech-supporting digital audio workstations (Pro Tools, Logic Audio, Apple computers, etc.).

Freelance job: All-purpose digital musician and producer. I've done everything from commercial jingles to house remixes. Yes, I get paid.

Out of shape.

Reasonably slim at the moment, but want to drop a couple of inches off my tummy and firm up.

In debt/still paying student loans.

Killed off my student loan (finally) last year. I have a couple of debts (one credit card, plus one credit line thru bank for financing equipment), but nothing I can't handle.

Attended at least one Lollapalooza.

Didn't care about Lollapalooza when it was a twentysomething rite of passage, and barely blinked when it got cancelled.

Has worn an ironic t-shirt at some point in his or her life, AND then later decried ironic t-shirts.

Yeah, and I still do (wear 'em and decry 'em, that is). Isn't that the fun of it?

Born between 1973 - 1979

1974.

Has a blog

No, I prefer semi-autobiographical message board ramblings.

...which links almost exclusively to other ILMer blogs.

No, I'm relatively late to the party that is ILM.

Lives in a City / large suburban commuter town/ urban area.

Beautiful downtown Toronto.

Has got tickets for The Pixies Reunion.

No. Although I have a soft spot for "Monkey Gone To Heaven".

Takes Pazz & Jop far too seriously.

What, that Christgau wrap-up thingy? Nah.

Makes nerdy CD-R compilations on a theme.

Sometimes, yeah.

Reads Pitchfork daily [even though they may disagree with the overall tone]

No, I dorked out on Pitchfork for about a week after I found out about it, but on the whole, it's a little too indie-fixated for me.

Male [let's face there a more men on ILM than women.

Guilty. (???!!!)

Likes 90s dance music such as Orbital, The Chemical Brothers and Leftfield.

"Chime" blew my mind when I was fifteen. All three acts are OK by me, but I was never a hardcore fan - when they were huge, I was more into things like deep house, d'n'b, and the emerging UKG scene.

Still listens to Joy Division Apart from the "hit(s)"

I'm only really familiar with their best-known stuff, like "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "She's Lost Control". I like them but am a little too young too have been a fan. New Order, however, are another story. I bought "Bizarre Love Triangle" on 7-inch vinyl as a kid - that was a pivotal moment for me.

Thinks NME these days is rubbish aimed at teenagers

Haven't read it recently at all. Can't comment.

So, whaddya think? Do I fit the profile?

Takes Pazz & Jop far too seriously. No.
Makes nerdy CD-R compilations on a theme. God yes. Was an obsessive mix-taper too.
Reads Pitchfork daily [even though they may disagree with the overall tone]nope.

Has had sex with around five people. No, a lot more, honestly. See Drew's answer above.
Drinks, maybe smokes socially, inc. pot I drink regularly and smoke about half a pack a day. I hate pot, haven't smoked it in 20 years. It's worse than acid.
Works in either computers or something tangentially related to the entertainment industry I teach second grade at a public school. It's in LA, though, does that make it tangentially related to the entertainment industry?
Out of shape. Yes. I mean, not terribly, but I could lose 25 pounds. I'm turning into a bear and apparently I just don't care anymore.
In debt/still paying student loans. Yes, credit card debt. Not huge, though.
Attended at least one Lollapalooza. Never went. I didn't care for most of the bands and I thought I'd feel really trapped in the heat. I've been to Coachella twice, though I'm young again!
Has worn an ironic t-shirt at some point in his or her life, AND then later decried ironic t-shirts. Yeah, can't argue with this one. Not ironic music-related t-shirts, though, more like sports or movie or military shirts. And I don't decry all ironic t-shirts, though, just the shitty ones.
Grew up in a suburb of a major city. My town in Connecticut was an hour away from Hartford, New Haven, and Providence. 2 1/2 hours from NYC. It didn't feel particularly suburban. It felt like a coastal New England factory town. Come come nuclear bomb!
Born between 1973 - 1979 1961.
Has a blog. No. That'd be way too much work.
Lives in a City / large suburban commuter town/ urban area. Guilty! And I probably always will.
Has got tickets for The Pixies Reunion I was thinking about it, but I never got around to buying tickets. I rarely get it together to go to anything I'm excited about. I did go to the Dolls reunion show. It was OK, Johansen had a cute outfit on. Some fancy schmancy loincloth thing.
Takes Pazz & Jop far too seriously. No. I got disappointed that there weren't all that many ILXor comments this year, though.
Makes nerdy CD-R compilations on a theme. Rarely. Once in a while I come up with a theme and a list of songs, but I don't get it together to make the compilation.
Reads Pitchfork daily [even though they may disagree with the overall tone] I usually forget it's there until someone links to it on a thread. Some of the writers are good. Especially the ones who post here, ha ha. When I first became aware of it, 3 years ago, I found the attitude of a lot of writers puzzling--uptight and old-hat, weirdly cred-conscious and bitchy . But it doesn't really seem to be like that much anymore. I thought their year-end lists were great.
Male Yeah.
Likes 90s dance music such as Orbital, The Chemical Brothers and Leftfield. They're OK, I only really know the Chemical Brothers. I prefer 90s dance music like Snap!, Eiffel 65, and Ace of Base.
Still listens to Joy Division Apart from the "hit(s)". Sure, but I mainly listen to the hits. They sound great. I don't really put on whole albums.
Thinks NME these days is rubbish aimed at teenagers Can't argue with that. I leaf through it once in awhile at a newstand in Pasadena and I'm just shocked by the lousy, predictable writing.!I can understand why people seem to dislike every band they champion, though I really loved the first Libertines record.

Makes nerdy CD-R compilations on a theme haha I always think about doing this but rarely actually get round to doing it.
Reads Pitchfork daily [even though they may disagree with the overall tone] certainly not.
Male [let's face there a more men on ILM than women] yes
Likes 90s dance music such as Orbital, The Chemical Brothers and Leftfield. I like but don't love all of those.

Still listens to Joy Division: .I just spent seven years on a book with JD as a vital thematic element, so I’ll take a few months off

Thinks NME these days is rubbish aimed at teenagers hyperbolic, but not exclusively for teens, and not everything for teens is rubbish

One thing about this question I'd like to point out: it should be shortened Thinks NME these days is rubbish. Originally it was just that, but somebody incorporated Haibun's answer into the question, rendering it sort of confusing, and everybody (myself included) has been repeating this in their responses.

iang, Sunday, 13 February 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

busts a nut for vh1 classic's the alternative: good grief no.

doesn't actually know all that much about music released before 1979 ("not that that's a bad thing"): Absolutely not. A large proportion of my favourites (soul, punk, rock & roll, old R&B...) were before then, and I know quite a lot about some of that.

But I also like it because I actually think of myself as an old man. I also have a pro-abstinance tee-shirt "I'm Worth The Wait" that I've never actually had the guts to wear in public. Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 17 September 2005 05:53 (twenty years ago)

Describe the average ILMer according to the broadest stereotypes you can.

My theory is that his place is just really 8 friends signing in with different screennames, going back and forth about music as if they're opinions are actually valid to the outside world. Every so often an outsider will chime in, but I'm convinced the meat of this board consists of the opinions of a small few.

Dan Barramouss (jimnaseum), Saturday, 18 November 2006 00:18 (nineteen years ago)

The average ILM'er used to grow up and get into music in the early 80s, and was pissed off by critics who didn't tolerate synth driven musical styles. Then decided that critics=bad and hitlists=good, which was correct in 1983, but isn't today, only the average ILM'er has yet to realize.

Doesn't actually know all that much about music released before 1979 w/r/t a few select careers I'm pretty knowledgable (Miles Davis, Capt Beefheart, a handful of others), but there's oodles for me to learn. That desire to learn is part of the reason I hang out at ILM.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Saturday, 18 November 2006 03:41 (nineteen years ago)

weird, two Austin people in a row. My sister-in-law and her family just moved to Cedar Park from Indianapolis.

Makes nerdy CD-R compilations on a theme. I have been known to, once or twice.
Reads Pitchfork daily [even though they may disagree with the overall tone]. I check the homepage almost every day, but I only read reviews if I hold a genuine interest in the band. They're more frequently OTM than given credit for, but on their pet bands they're insufferable.
Male. Indeed so.
Likes 90s dance music such as Orbital, The Chemical Brothers and Leftfield. Yes, first two especially. Great stuff (at least until TCB released 'Come With Us', one of the worst albums I've ever heard).
Thinks NME these days is rubbish aimed at teenagers. They occasionally get a minor review right, but on the whole their entire purpose and concentration is a means to highlight and promote the 'in thing' with musical morons who value loutish swagger ahead of actual artistic worth. Most of whom are teenagers. i.e. they suck.
Doesn't actually know all that much about music released before 1979. No, I don't. Although I know a lot about prog, which really is the only pre-1979 movement worth following nowadays. I'm joking.

Doesn't actually know all that much about music released before 1979 - oh, I dunno. I mostly listen to stuff from the last 15 or so years, I guess, but there's a hell of a lot of much, much older stuff in there too.
