erlend oye - dj kicks

deserves its own thread, i think.

THIS IS SO FUCKING GOOD. i listened to it three times before work today!!

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

the whole section from cornelius to the track before villalobos is brilliance. his vocal contributions are perfect. i don't think i ever want to hear another san francisco style house track without a morrisey lyric on it ever again.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"There is a Light That Never Goes Out" + "Poor Leno (Silikon Remix)" = brilliant.

"Always on My Mind" + "Metal Chix" = somehow more brilliant.

"I Need Your Love" + "I Need Your Love" = not so brilliant.

I love this mix. Almost perfect.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

This sounds intriguing. But!

How likely am I to enjoy it if I thought Erlend Oye's own music was some of the most horrible I've heard in the last 2 years?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

He only sings on about a quarter of the tracks. I'd say it's still pretty likely.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i burnt out on this record way too quickly. that and, as i mentioned before, the ave d cut. still, better than it has any right being.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Erlend Oye's own music was some of the most horrible I've heard in the last 2 years

if it's because you dislike his singing style i'd say maybe there'd be reason to worry. though he's pretty restrained - i knew many of the tracks beforehand and his contributions aren't jarring. he's more often intoning the lyrics than full-on belting them out. it's more miss kittin than louie austen (i don't know if those references make sense to you, tom).

i don't think the music has too much to do with oye's own music. i'm not at all familiar with kings of convenience or his solo work (though i plan to look into it, now). this mix is pretty much straight microhouse, on the downtempo/soft bedtime music end of the spectrum. from what i know of your taste i think you'd like that.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I reckon Double T would detest it, which is to say that he'll probably love it.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

ok i was planning on spending some time this spring looking more closely into electric emo music like postal service, morr music, etc. but somehow i feel like oye's gone and made that stuff a bit redundant by accomplishing it in this context. obviously people have been there before (superpitcher comes to mind), it's just that this mix presents it as a really coherent statement.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Just say no to Emo.

(x-post vahid)

Born-Again Pubescent Undercover Pocket Nihilist Crochet Ninja (mjt), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, this really is much much better than it has any right to be.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i've even gotten over (mostly) the avenue d thing.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean, he sings "it's a fine day" and "cruel summer"...it's like a pocket history of gloopy dance vocals.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

blimey

assuming it's official, when is it out?

zebedee (zebedee), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

april/may

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Track list?

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

How likely am I to enjoy it if I thought Erlend Oye's own music was some of the most horrible I've heard in the last 2 years?

Speaking of just King Of Convenience here, or did you also dislike his dance/electronica oriented solo album from 2003?

Pet Shop Boys

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, right. obviously.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

did i miss any other covers?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know why ILM people wouldn't like his vocals on this - they kind of remind me of Arthur Russell. Less expressive, but same tone.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

steely dan house

that's !exactly! what a lot of it sounds like. all the talk about MOR house that was going around when "digital love" came out ---> leads directly to this cd.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I am stunned by the excellent tracklist.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

yes but is mine more stunning or is dominique's?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

also it looks like areal is blowing up (well, they kind of have already) - i keep seeing ADA's tracks everywhere ...

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

oh is what where i recognize the name from? did "lovelace" correct?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

this looks good

You know the trouble with record labels is they wait too long to release stuff and it ends up cutting into their sales.

This and the superpitcher should be out now!

hector (hector), Friday, 5 March 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep Ada did Lovelaceas well as Blindhouse, which was on Triple R's mix for Kompakt.

Philippe (Philippe), Friday, 5 March 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

funny thing about this mix is the "mixing consultation by" credit on the promo. (i forget who it's credited to.) does that mean that oye didn't actually mix it? even, like, digitally?

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

it's like that nicolette one, where plaid did the mixing.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha which they didn't even do, they just recorded little adjoining interludes. Weirdos.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah but that mix is SO killer and has some amazing stuff that i've never seen anywhere else ...

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

That Minizza track is beautiful.. do they have anything else out?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

(x-post)It's got a really good track list, yes, but its a total mess as a mix (why she get Plaid to do it anyway, was there a shortage of DJs in London that week?)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm. i think they were producing her album at the time?

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

it's weird bjork's never done that. maybe she's too big to do a mix? i expect when her career starts going downhill we'll get one (mixed by mark bell or something)

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

It'd be Herbert these days.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 5 March 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Matthew Barney's doing the cover art though.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 5 March 2004 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

she did a mix for the breezeblock, didn't she?

toby (tsg20), Friday, 5 March 2004 07:08 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
just came across this here.
i was involved in working out the technical side for that mix.
so if you have any questions, feel free to ask me about it.

phonique, Monday, 29 March 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

what did you do?

RJG (RJG), Monday, 29 March 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a question, phonique. What does T.I and T.I.P stand for also what is his real name?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 29 March 2004 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah what did you do?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 29 March 2004 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I've read somewhere that Erlend is going to do dj-set at "skansen" in Oslo, where he is supposed to be singing and mixing at the same time. That could be pretty funny! I've seen him a couple of time doing some sets, and he's the most funny dj i've ever seen. Looks cool also, uhm...

V, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

just went to check out a four tet concert yesterday, and then erlend øye himself showed up as support artist, playing his songs on acoustic guitar only, taking requests and all. during four tet's set, øye sat in the corner of the stage and handed out beer to the audience and took pictures of them. what a lovely guy.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

if you like the album check out Star You Star Me feat Erlend Oye's 'A Place In My Heart' coming out May 2004 on Kickin Records... with mixes from Jori Hulkkonen and Mr Velcro Fastener - you need this record... check www.kickinmusic.com for more details

steve jones, Friday, 2 April 2004 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm listening to this now. I'm surprised how long it took for someone to mention the not-so-good mixing. Talk about awkward transistions.

djdee2005, Thursday, 8 April 2004 06:45 (twenty-one years ago)

isn't (beat)mixing mainly a 90ies thing?

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

are you serious?

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

it's certainly overrated

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Well first of all to me DJ Dee's post implied bad track selection aswell as anything else.

I don't think mixing is overrated, lots of DJs are crap at it and I don't see alot of people complaining. If I bought a mix in the shops though I'd expect it to be well mixed, I mean even they use a computer as most do now.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a slippery slope to sasha is all i am saying

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a big hoo-ha about this in Jockey Slut when one of their worse writers wrote a piece saying "mixing is dead" or something, and it was kind of silly.

the other side is a slippery slope to greasy joes mobile disco.

Obviously somewhere in the middle is ok.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

greasy joes mobile disco sounds great!!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe i just like the name

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

sleazy strongos hit parade

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"OI!! who whants to hear some sugahbahbessss?!"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"and that one goes out to Stephen, who loves Claire"

Michael Mayer (Ronan), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

that's my british funk flex impression

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

It obviously depends on the kind of tracks being played. Techno mixes, goes without saying. Kompakt type stuff with 4/4 beats should be well-mixed, at leats have smooth transitions. And most of their mix disks are pretty good. Whereas more varied stuff, with either non-four-to-floor beats, or guitary/clashy stuff, is fine just kindof mashed in.

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Skill at mixing is a *definite* requirement of good DJing, and I say that as someone who cannot mix at all and have been in a position watch how my own transitions literally killed the vibe on the dancefloor by virtue of their awkwardness. A lot of the time stuff that doesn't sound beatmixed but still sounds fine has actually been mixed very carefully. A sudden transtion can be as hard to pull off as a subtle one. And anyway the "Digweed" approach as SR calls it is propped up by the use of identical records.

Good example of a v. effective and obviously well-planned sudden transition: the sudden switch into "Love Me" on Mayer's Fabric mix.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 10 April 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I submit that Larry Levan is proof that skill at mixing is completely unnecessary.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 10 April 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to be a real stickler about this since I used to DJ Strictly Rhythm/Nervous style house, and I remember hating the MayDay mix because of a few miscues, and those UK Garage comps that were terribly mixed; but I've softened my dogma, and I've rediscovered a bunch of things that I'd previously dismissed (the MayDay mix is now one of my favorite things ever - those early Garage mixes still bug me though). I think the Larry Levan Live at the Paradise Garage was the turning point for me.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 10 April 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Which UK Garage comps Spencer?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 10 April 2004 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

tim so otm about the difficulty of unmixed beatmatching.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 10 April 2004 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

whoops i mean unbeatmatched mixing.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 10 April 2004 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

v. excited for this- heard the royksopp remix w/"there is a light" sung over the top on the radio, of all places. totally pleasurable. i'm not a huge fan of the original song but he sings it well. it's nice he borrowed the idea from schneider tm!

it's great that the singjay idea is moving out into this stuff, it seems like natural.

rgeary (rgeary), Saturday, 10 April 2004 05:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Ivan Smagghe is a bit of a whiz at the not mixing style.

If I'm out and someone is fucking up mixes I'd be a bit annoyed or maybe disappointed is a better word. I remember seeing Agoria and it was like me fucking around crashing tunes together.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 10 April 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually my best "bad mix" stories concerns this total hack local DJ over here, who nonetheless gets gigs everywhere because he's sort of established himself as "the face of Irish dance" or something. His name is Johnny, he's a real parasite.

Anyway he was supporting Mr C one night and he played Poor Leno (as was his wont for about 2 years). Mr C was getting ready to come on and all of a sudden a noise like "POOOOOOOOR LENOEVERYTHINGEVERYTHINGLENO POOOOOOOOR EVERYTHING EVERYTHING ADSFAHFSGBHSADFJHDJHFV" blurted out of the speakers. It was so fucking terrible, I've never seen such a bad mix! Rez into Poor Leno, Mr C looked disgusted even.

There was another time where he tried to mix the Dave Clarke remix of Coatnoise into that awful Joey Negro and Seal track!! The 2 DJs who were behind him burst out laughing and he saw them and changed it. Or on New Years Eve after 3 hours of Dave Clarke he just came on, didn't give a toss, and jammed in that Ashley Beedle remix of the Streets.

Tim otm re bad mixing, it can totally kill the vibe.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 10 April 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Which UK Garage comps Spencer?

You know what? I don't remember exactly. Maybe the early Pure Garage and the early Ayia Napa (Dreem Team maybe, but I can't remember). I just recall spending $35 for a comp and then it was 2 discs of messed up beat-matching. I was appalled. After that I would only buy Ministry mixes because they were obviously done on a computer.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 12 April 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm just downloading this now, mainly cos some guy on slsk was getting Devin Dazzle off me and asked me to put him on his user list and was like "please take something from me too, erland oye dj kicks is great" and I felt it was only polite to oblige.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 12 April 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

?y?ly my best "bad mix" stories concerns this total hack local DJ over here, who nonetheless gets gigs everywhere because he's sort of established himself as "the face of Irish dance" or something. His name is Johnny, he's a real parasite.

heh.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 12 April 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"You know what? I don't remember exactly. Maybe the early Pure Garage and the early Ayia Napa (Dreem Team maybe, but I can't remember). I was about to say that the Ministry ones esp. always had great if obv. programmed intermesh sections. I still remember fondly the first time I listened to the first Artful Dodger Ministry comp and my SHOCK and AWE as the first stabbing beats from the (at that point unknown to me) Stanton Warriors mix of "Jump & Shout" started to lash the ending of "Moving Too Fast".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

God I love that comp. I especially liked the photography in the booklet; urban jungle, dude. Also, the version of MAW's "To Be In Love" seems unique. They must've drawn it out or added something underneath it as it's not really the 'MJ Cole vocal' as noted. But I fear we're derailing this thread with all this 2-step talk.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 05:34 (twenty-one years ago)

haha lauren, I swear I don't complain about him except when he's there!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 08:12 (twenty-one years ago)

(is it me or does erlend oye say "alan braxe, and fred FALCON"

I mean if he's going to play their record he could at least get the fucking name right!!!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

That part reminds me of the beginning of Pulp's "Mis-Shapes" video, "It's Gooooood, It's Goooooooood!"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I think his track selection/arrangement makes this very hard to enjoy but maybe it'll click eventually. It's not technically the beat mixing which is annoying to me really.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Erlend is Djing in SF on May 8th (www.blasthaus.com). Where my peoples at?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Where?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Usual place.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually strike that. I thought it was at Club 6 or Mezzanine, but it's at "Rx", 132 Eddy.

????

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

aw, i woulda gone to this but i'll be in LA for mother's day

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

'RX' stands for Robbed at Knifepoint. It's a rough neighborhood. But it's actually a very comfortable bar once you're inside.

the jiffy-scuttler monthly is run by friends of mine there.

(Jon L), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I'm in.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Me too.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

would if i could!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

A rough neighbourhood? B-b-but it's right downtown...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel like such a newbie.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually that's more the Tenderloin than downtown. But it's no worse a location than oh Club Six.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I cant believe people are saying this is badly mixed, i think it flows really well. It may not be beatmixed perfectly but you couldnt do that with this selection and its not what this mix is about AT ALL. There are plenty of perfectly beatmixed cd's out there to choose from!

jed_ (jed), Monday, 3 May 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not the beatmixing even, it's the order of the tracks.

this is the typification of why mix albums are constantly 3.5 stars out of 5 good, cos they're all so erratic stylistically now, or eclectic. Fun but where's the purity. It shouldn't be just a techno thing.

I mean Rubicon sticks out a mile in this mix. I actually quite like parts of it but it's nothing special.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 May 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

(also how many people on this thread ever end up listening to silicon soul or whatever in the course of their usual downloads? Maybe this just seems ace cos it's got a load of "cheese" (not my description) but enough minimal stuff to make it hit the radar)

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 May 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe Oye is under the impression that he's just supposed to mix a bunch of his favorite songs.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 3 May 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh don't give me this salt of the earth rubbish, it's a record and it deserves as much praise/criticism as any other record.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 May 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I think Rubicon is kind of gimmicky myself, but I still like the album as a whole.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 3 May 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

also how many people on this thread ever end up listening to silicon soul or whatever in the course of their usual downloads?

are you describling s. soul as cheese or mimimal? either way they're not interesting or particualrly good are they? why should anyone listen to them particularly? as for purity it's certainly not what i'm after in a mix of this sort, why should it be?

jed_ (jed), Monday, 3 May 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

they're generally shite! but it's a good remix. my point is that it's a mix which works off the back of clashing two styles together who are unfamiliar with each other. I'm suggesting some of the love for this mix is bolstered by him sticking on some big goofy banger type tracks in a context where it's ok to like them.

I mean if this is mix of the year then I just don't know, it's this sense of scrabbling through everything for enough good tracks which bugs me about house mixes lately.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 May 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

the only thing i don't like is when he does that stupid announcer voice, it really harshes my mellow man

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 3 May 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

particularly!

no one said it was mix of the year though it may well be, who knows? I don't really want to hear thos kind of "goofy bange like" tracks unless they are recontextualised in some way. living and going out in glasgow ive herad that soma-zzzzzzzz........ sound since i was about 18 (14 years ago!) and i dont want to hear it again, really...or sould say particularly!

...anyway this will be mix of the year.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 3 May 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

cutty OTM, the only thing that grates in the into to the braxe/falke track.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 3 May 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I just think it's a cheap trick.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 May 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd rather listen to all kompakt/villalobos mixed, is my point. It's a picky one I guess but I think this sort of mix is representative of a general malaise.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 May 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

well wait for kill the dj part 2.

id rather listen to whatever i fancy listening to whether its this or kompakt. ive said this in about 20 different threads but that Mayer fabric mix is dull as fuck.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 3 May 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

of course, I'm not forbidding anyone from listening to it or enjoying it.

Maybe if you find the Mayer mix dull and love this you really SHOULD be listening to more goofy stuff! There's more to it than Soma or whatever.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 May 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

cutty OTM, the only thing that grates in the into to the braxe/falke track.

But that is one my favourite parts!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I think too many people are afraid of what they see as "cheesy". What exactly is so scary about cheese?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

No no you don't get me, I think the reason people like this is due to the sentiment you highlight in your first sentence.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I've got this thing all twisted.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno, i like that this disc is kind of goofy and peppy and stuff but i don't know if "cheesiness" ever enters into the equation at all vis a vis me liking it

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I just don't like the goofy/serious melange.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

although maybe goofy's the wrong word for just meaning populist or something. than again kompakt probably sell more records than vulture

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Hang on, Erland had technical help with the mixing and no one pointed out that the transition between the first two records doesn't work AT ALL? There's a big key clash that throws me completely.

Otherwise, I really like this record - I have no problem whatsoever with the goofy-serious mix (and Ronan you like 2 Many DJs as well so I'm really not sure where you're coming from on this...)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

do you mean the 2nd and 3rd records?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I do like 2manydjs but I had similar reservations about them.

Also this mix is slightly different in that 2manydjs don't seem to be making such gigantic leaps.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i really dont understand what your problems are with it. i dont mean i disagree with you i just dont know where you're coming from.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe I'm not explaining very well.

I just think it's too show-offy, and that's where the macro/micro or goofy/serious conflict comes in for me. I just listened all over again and it just seems like there's no need to mix it at all, it doesn't have a middle to it either, for me, just 5 sets of 3 or 4 songs.

It's a bit of a laugh but I'm glad I didn't buy it.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

it doesn't have a middle to it either, for me, just 5 sets of 3 or 4 songs

this is really true, isn't it? i think my early thrill over this mix boils down to a couple of the segments. i rarely listen to the end anymore, or even the first part in its entirety.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

but the end has that wonderful morgan geist track.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno Ronan, somethuing like "So Wiet Wie Noch Nie" is about as goofy as "Rubicon". I've not got the mix yet but I'm familiar with most of the tracks and I can see a fairly consistent thread running through most of them.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, I effing LOVE "Rubicon." Bought that sucker on 12" in Cologne and can't get enough of it. I don't know if I'll ever manage to play it out, but man, what a tune. I do sort of take issue with the way it's just stuck into the mix here, not mixed in at all (and I loathe the Avenue D song) -- I'd much rather hear it as the peak of a real uptempo section.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

is there anyone on ilm who isn't totally in thrall with rubicon?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, for some reason I thought some of the above comments were dissing it. Maybe I misread. I'd definitely pick it as an ILM track if ever there were one.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"is there anyone on ilm who isn't totally in thrall with rubicon?"

Ronan apparently.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i find it a bit tedious. a lot of earlier falke / roulette stuff was more fun.

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

rubicon is a pretty cool track, but i've heard it out twice and it pretty much stops everything dead. there's no really danceable bass element to latch onto so the song seems unreasonably fast - you end up bopping along to the arpeggios and tire yourself out. which is ok, because at least as people stop moving from tiredness the end part comes in and everyone can air-guitar along to it.

the earlier roule stuff was much more fun but it's was also a bit repetetive. somehow seven minutes of "runnin" seemed much much more tedious than five minutes of even the trackiest tresor techno.

now that phoenix track is something else entirely. i heard a dj drop it about a month ago in the middle of a dancey indie/britpop set (smiths, pulp, the cure, postal service, dntel, etc). the floor was fairly packed and sweaty already but phoenix absolutely KILLED IT.

(and yes, afterwards people around me really were going "what was the name of that amazing STEELY DAN track??" - really! i swear!!)

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha! brilliant.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the "old" version of Rubicon. The one with the "vocals".

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I usually just fill in the words when I hear the instrumental.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

alex i think ronan was referring to the mix overall. at least i'd assume so, given his raves abt rubicon elsewhere.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a version with vocals??? WTF?

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah hook a brother up

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm actually working on a supersecret mashup with vocals you will all recognize, but I'm not saying any more. Vahid, I'm not surprised to hear about Rubicon's floor-killing potential. You're right, the rhythms don't have that undertow to keep people moving. I'm sure it would go over gangbusters at a coked-up electro-rock party, though!

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I still haven't played this CD.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure it would go over gangbusters at a coked-up electro-rock party, though!

i'm sorry to say that's where i heard it (both times) :-(

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Ummmmm...if you guys don't know about it, I'm starting to doubt it ever existed. Maybe it's off a mix or something. I'm referring to the version that has the d00d shouting about "big titty bitches" who "think they is the shit"....if you'll pardon my French.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, so it's a sample, obv. See first post here:

Alan Braxe 'Rubicon' & Paradise (Braxe & Romauld) 'In Love With You'

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I read down the thread and saw Vahid's explanation. Never mind. As you were, gentlemen.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh how far I've come that people think I might not like Rubicon!

I love it, and I find the "kill the dancefloor" comments odd, I played it out and it was the one record that night that got some shouts and cheers, and filled the floor. It's so relentless that by the end people just kind of broke and began shouting. Around the time of the guitar solo.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 07:36 (twenty-one years ago)

coked-up electro-rock party

It is the most coked up record ever.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 07:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Rubicon has a guitar solo?! WTF?!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

At the end? it goes doo-do, do-do-do-do, do-do-do, doo-do-do-doo

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 08:54 (twenty-one years ago)

haha perhaps we who grew up in america in the 80s have a different definition of "guitar solo"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I presume it's on an actual guitar too, yes??

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 09:00 (twenty-one years ago)

It had never occurred to me that that bit might be an actual guitar. I assumed it was some sort of doo-do, do-do-do-do, do-do-do, doo-do-do-doo machine.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone gonna see him spin tonite at APT here in nyc? i am debating going...it could be amusing

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

whoops, i mean tomorrow at APT

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

er, no, i meant tonight!

(i'm sorta out of it)

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm maybe

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

It's $5.

but for $3 i'll sing over any song you want!

ddb, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Geeta plz report back if you go. I am weighing up whether or not to go in SF on Saturday.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

my final word, kind of more eloquent I hope, and also me trying to blog more regularly and get back in the swing of things.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"does anyone here like dance music but hate the dance 'scene'"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i totally agree with ronan! not expecting tonite to be great, but it should at least be an amusing night for five bucks (with free vodka from 9 to 10.) i saw theo parrish at APT last week and he blew my mind...i'm certainly not expecting tonite to go anywhere near that.

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

: ' (

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

that was for strongo!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

(I love the scene, so much so I once had a massive argument with a friend when I remarked that his flyer saying "it's not about the scene it's about the music" was silly)

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

haha sorry ronan i just couldn't resist

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

god, I'd like to see Theo Parrish.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

(you know i'm a dance rockist too)

(x-post: i would love to see theo parrish too, but apparently he's "hip" now, so maybe in a year or two.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I would like to see theo huxtable

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i am still kinda freaked out rudy huxtable is playing a video ho these days

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i wonder if bud's a baller now

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

a winner is mark

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Ronan, is anyone really enjoying this mix cos they think Oye is a nice guy, salt of the earth type as you suggest?

"total lack of care in track selection" ...no, the tracks are well chosen, mostly well mixed and sequenced. I'd try and argue more vehemently in favour of this mix but then i'd sound like i really LOVE this CD rather than quite like it, think its pretty good. It's better than most mixed CD's ive heard lately 'cos it sustains my interest all the way through, makes me wanna move around my bedroom, play it to my mates... and it makes me smile.

Also i DO think you're being a snob about it however much you deny it ;-)

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I was snobby about it too (see upthread!), but that was mostly because Erlend has a comedy mustache.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Apologies to any ILXers with comedy mustaches, it's a trust issue.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

typical, now everyone's gettin in on the snob angle.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

who was the snob first, you or ronan?

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I was a snob way back when Ronan was just an equation on a mad scientist's chalkboard.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

As far as I can tell, Ronan hates the mix because he wants to dance to the thing as a whole, which would be hard. Can I sit at work and listen to this mix? Yes. Can I listen to it in the car? Yes. Can I walk around my apartment and sporadically dance to certain parts while doing random tasks? Sure. I think I'd have problems if I wanted to do nothing but dance for the duration.

It really sounds like a handful of songs that Erlend likes, combined with a few that transition fairly well with those selections. Except the Avenue D cut, which was obviously thrown in when someone realized how inoffensive the rest of the album sounds. As a whole, it experiments with eclecticism without ever being eclectic. But I like it.

mike h. (mike h.), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

spot on.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, I read this:

Erlend Øye the DJ is the Paul Simon to Erlend Øye the King of Convenience's Art Garfunkel. Øye's first-ever mix, the latest installment in !K7's DJ Kicks series, is better than it has any right to be. Opening with the Kompakt shuffle of Jurgen Paape, Kicks not-so-effortlessly mixes the Steely Dan-esque Phoenix with the Rapture, Morgan Geist, and, unfortunately, Avenue D, to make one of post-Immer microhouse's best compilations. Øye charmingly sings over many of the tracks, harmonizing with the original melodies and softening the firmer rhythmic punches. Watch him gawk from behind the decks tonight. (YS)

on flavorpill and then thought:

a) Hey, this rips off jess' "better than it has any right to be" comment upthread!
b)Oh wait, it's probably Yanc3y, isn't it?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah but jess ripped yancey off first, right? SO CONVOLUTED!

why does everyone hate the avenue d track?? maybe i just like it because their live show was great.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i hate the vocals with a passion

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

re: avenue d

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The Avenue D track reminds me that my masculinity is under threat.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this album has every right to be good. But then I believe in freedom for all people everywhere.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

it's sounds like fannypack, but not charming in the least

xpost

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

but shouldn't sounding like fannypack be enough to be charming??

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark, are you calling Yancey and jess (taste) fascists?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe we should take this to the northern state thread.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

er x-post

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

to make one of post-Immer microhouse's best compilations.

HUH!?

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

haha yeah that's def not comin from me

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

haha! that was a line added in the editing process

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

ryan pitchfork strikes again!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

wait no

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the Avenue D track. I often play it just by itself.

I don't actually dance to mixes while listening, I just like mixes which seem like mixes I'd like to dance to.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Ronan, bad mixing aside, I'm not convinced that any of your criticisms of this record couldn't equally be directed at the Jaques Lu Cont Fabric mix from last year, if anything that's MORE eclectic and self-consciously all over the place.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 08:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Not really, until the final mashup, or track 13 or 14 it's mixed beautifully. There are some great mixes throughout though, Devo into Junior Sanchez may be eclectic but it's also mixed amazingly well. Same goes for the Eurythmics/Cosmos/GusGus segue.

If anything, now that you mention it, that mix shows how much better the whole eclecticism thing is when it's actually thought about and mixed well. I think I need to hear that amazing Devo/Junior Sanchez segue right now!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

(I think the mixing part can't be put aside so easily Matt, I mean shouldn't track selection be determined in terms of making a mix??)

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Yancey, you're trying to tell me that line was added in the editing? Who, other than you or me, would have referenced Immer in the first place? I smell a rat.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

to be fair, yancey originally wrote "post-royksopp"

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

post-2manydjs shambles

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh no, I've turned this into yet another "rock" crit beef thread!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

crit beef? I like that in a kebab.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

ew ew leg of derogatis

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

added in the editing process = went through an edit pass here in nyc where l.r. and d.l. thought it needed something more in that spot. d.l. suggested namechecking another album and that's what i came up with. (what can i tell you? without jkg it was hell here!)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

more acronyms pls

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

haha so i went to APT last night and he was an amusingly horrible dj! he was obviously REALLY into it, though, dancing like crazy in the booth while spinning, and yelling stuff out like 'you're gonna love this one!' and stuff. girls were really into erlend too...they were clustering near the dj booth to try to catch his eye (he has that tortured-indie-artist look that i guess those girls go for...mussed brown hair, thick glasses..i dunno, i'm not into it) the segues were a little better than i thought. he played some good stuff but some was so obvious and dated that i wondered how he even managed to get away with it. like he played jaxx 'just 1 kiss' followed by daft punk's 'one more time', and then sang along off-key with 'one more time' like it was karaoke...truly dreadful but at the same time kind of endearing.
at some point he got tired of djing and just threw on a prince mix and hit the floor, dancing with all the girls who were eyeing him.
so he was pretty awful. not a bad night out for $5, though. i haven't yet heard that dj kicks mix.

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

that is exactly how I imagine him to be.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

aw, bless. i love erlend. say what you will, but you can't fault him for lack of enthusiasm.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

in fairness he sounds like me DJing.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

lauren was so one of the girls around the dj booth.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

excuse me? i've moved up from djs to musicians.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

rockist

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

he got tired of djing and just threw on a prince mix and hit the floor, dancing with all the girls who were eyeing him.

Proving that he is a motherfucking P.I.M.P.

Lauren, Erlend is both! Don't get evasive on us.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

he is. i realized that right after i posted. he's also my shopping buddy - i'm being totally serious. we usually run into each other in random cities and go shoe-hunting.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Scand-alous! Shit, I wanna be Norwegian like Erlend... sounds like they have the right approach to DJing up there. From now on my theme song will be "I wanna be a Nord."

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i fear i am only one letter away.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

ho ho!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

we usually run into each other in random cities and go shoe-hunting.

He was leading those girls on, wasn't he?

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

haha

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

why must you live in a world of binaries, barima

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

does the Morgan Geist/Erlend track exist anywhere else but this mix?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 13 May 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

what, lullaby? its on the 'super' 12" on environ. and also on a astralwerks comp

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 13 May 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

thx.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 13 May 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
I've been listening to this for a couple of months now, and I only now realized that the version I downloaded doesn't have "Poor Leno" on it! Heh, that always seemed like a poor transition.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 29 July 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

(I was fooled because it still has 17 tracks, which is how many AMG says it has, because some versions omit "Luckycharm/Intuition," I guess.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 29 July 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
loving this today, esp. 'Metal Chix'

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 12:53 (twenty years ago)

Avenue D into The Ratpure is good mixing (as in unremarkable but competent and pleasing to the ear)

if only it was the Pearson 'Friends With Girls' mix of 'I Need Your Love'!

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 13:37 (twenty years ago)

why must you live in a world of binaries, barima
-- strongo hulkington (dubplatestyl...), May 5th, 2004.

Why all my personality flaws are more apparent on ILM than ILE I have no idea.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 13:50 (twenty years ago)

when I criticised this record I hadn't even read the sleevenotes which confirm everything I said!

on the other hand, I have a weird mp3 of him singing "intuition" over Lucky Charm by Ada and have no idea where it came from cos it's not on the mix as far as I know. it's amazing.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 14:36 (twenty years ago)

it's on the copy i downloaded, at the end. definitely his most haunting vocal i think (as is the Ada track). the Smiths and PSBs vocals are a bit naff tho, gotta be said.

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 14:51 (twenty years ago)

the worst is that fucking god awful track at about number 6 where he's like "wokeupinthemorning with a job to dooooooooo" in a horrible cracked high pitched voice.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 14:56 (twenty years ago)

isn't that his acapella over 'Jolly Music'? i like it - he doesn't sound 'Eurojockey' enough tho

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 14:59 (twenty years ago)

that should be 'Radio Jolly'

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Avenue D into The Ratpure is good mixing

"Wake up!" I love it.

The best sequence is still "Airraid" into "Poor Leno" into "Metal Chix". That shit is unstoppoable.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 15:54 (twenty years ago)

ronan, you're right re: luckycharm/ada not being on the actual release. the promo version differs slightly from the disc (lengths of tracks are different, the actual disc ends with the morgan geist lullaby trumpet solo, a few other things).

Nick Sylvester, Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:28 (twenty years ago)

why in the hell would they leave ada off the actual release?

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:38 (twenty years ago)

yes it's easily the best track!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:18 (twenty years ago)

so you DO hate 'Rubicon'!

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:21 (twenty years ago)

no no Rubicon is great. I have always, like Erland, loved Fred FALCON.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:22 (twenty years ago)

he actually says "Fall-ka" which is the right way to pronounce it.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:30 (twenty years ago)

...i would have thought.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:30 (twenty years ago)

I just listened again, it still sounds like "falcon" to me. but perhaps I'm being harsh.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:32 (twenty years ago)

it's clearly 'Falke' pronounced 'Falk-a'

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:33 (twenty years ago)

OMG HERE'S FREDDY FALCO WITH ROCK ME AMAYER DEUS

Frankerlend On Oyece (blueski), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:34 (twenty years ago)

haha, maybe he pronounces it differently on the promo.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 18:35 (twenty years ago)

fred FALCON is an awesome name mind.

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:10 (twenty years ago)

seven months pass...
Ronan should avoid Erick Bieritz's most recent Stycast, wherein Todd Burns introduces a Royksopp remix by "Alan Brax-ay and Fred Falk-ay."

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

Has there been a 2005 equivalent to this mix yet? (poppy, fun, easy to like)

jergins (jergins), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

The Moonbootica mix DJ Sounds Good is poppy, fun and easy like, but more in a Fatboy Slim way than a Corny Indie Fuxx way.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

Erol Alkan-Bugged Out Mix, perhaps?

It is quite hard and not as wistful as Erland Oye maybe but it is alot of big records well put together. Plus the Bugged In chilled out CD is probably as good as if not better than the uptempo one.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
hi dere

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 6 May 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

i find both the hot chip and four tet dj kicks pretty uneven. heven't heard erlend's.

negotiable, Sunday, 6 May 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

I listened to this for the irst time like 3 weeks ago, and in my opinion, at least, take out tracks 3-11 and I'd just love this forever. (as a side note,I had a bunch of loose mp3s before hearing this in full, which was stuff like so weit wie noch nie, the poor leno remix, metalchix, etc. so the long stretch of avenue D and the rapture etc was both suprising in a way and kind of tedious)

mehlt, Sunday, 6 May 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

this has rubicon on it right? i love that song.

negotiable, Sunday, 6 May 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...

I'm very late to the game. I was reading RA's feature on the best mixes of the 00's and this came on #18 I think. Finally gave it a spin today and have to admit I'm very impressed. Very indie-dance-pop friendly. I think I could play this to my acquaintances who hate electronica without hearing a complaint.

Are there any other mix albums in the same style that you can recommend me?

Moka, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 23:55 (fifteen years ago)

This comes close, I think: http://www.discogs.com/Modernist-Collectors-Series-Pt-1-Popular-Songs/release/764442

Not brilliant, but nice enough (lou), Thursday, 28 January 2010 00:14 (fifteen years ago)

or this?

http://www.discogs.com/DJ-Koze-All-People-Is-My-Friends/release/225367?ev=rr

i used to get right het-up in the olden days. i don't think i've posted much more than a [this is good] or a [this is not as good as the last record] to an ilm album thread for maybe two years. old age!

i listened to this about a month ago and really enjoyed it for about 25 minutes, then got a bit irritated then liked it again for villalobos then switched it off because the end is pretty dull.

jed_, Thursday, 28 January 2010 00:28 (fifteen years ago)

RA's feature on the best mixes of the 00's and this came on #18 I think.

Thanks, those two mixes look spot on. Particulary interested in the modernist one, lots of songs I love in there. Will check those out.

the playgroup and tiga dj kicks too (both in the RA top 50)

jed_, Thursday, 28 January 2010 00:45 (fifteen years ago)

(xx-post) Thanks! This is GREAT! And it's cool that they got Dave Clarke and Michael Mayer to write the blurbs for their own mixes.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 28 January 2010 00:47 (fifteen years ago)

yeah RA Top 50 mixes needs its own thread like 2 minutes ago.

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Thursday, 28 January 2010 01:06 (fifteen years ago)

Thanks jed. Will check them out. Lots of stuff I dont recognize but vol. 3 has some amazing balearic picks.

Moka, Thursday, 28 January 2010 01:45 (fifteen years ago)

Already checked the Eskimo and Dj Koze mixes and they're wonderful.

Haven't had any luck with 'The Modernist: Collector's Series'. Can't find a download link anywhere. Boomkat and amazon don't have it for digital sale either.

Moka, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:24 (fifteen years ago)

it seemed like that one, and the kaos + sal p mix that was the other 'collectors series', disappeared pretty quick. which is a shame because the latter is ace. dude putting together collectors' series was involved with dj-kicks at the very start apparently.

unicorn tear da club up (haitch), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:35 (fifteen years ago)

around the same time, a dude from le hammond inferno (who i don't know at all) posted a mix free for download that i think has the same appeal, it had like seelenuft - manila, and "we are your friends" about two years before was a hit, and a lot of vocal tracks generally. i remember it as really fun. i could upload it for you somewhere some time in the next few days if you are interested.

men lie, women lie, hips don't (zvookster), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:36 (fifteen years ago)

Moka (and whoever else might be interested)- I can hook you up with a zip of the Modernist mix if you like.

lou, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:38 (fifteen years ago)

zvookster, lou: Yes, thank you! hook me up with those two mixes please! my email is motelmoka(at)gmail.com I'm sending you a message from here (ilxor) as well. Thanks!

Moka, Friday, 5 February 2010 20:34 (fifteen years ago)

lou, me too please if you don't mind. it would be at "emailnp(at)yahoo.co.uk". thanks!!

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Saturday, 6 February 2010 00:38 (fifteen years ago)

Erlend's DJ Kicks is probably THE record that shaped my listening tastes from the age of 15 onwards. Still listen to it all the time.

Dwight Yorke, Saturday, 6 February 2010 22:05 (fifteen years ago)

Oh yeah, question: where does the Intuition a capella come from? I swear Feist did a version on one of her albums.

Dwight Yorke, Saturday, 6 February 2010 22:07 (fifteen years ago)

It's nothing short of great, but if tracks 3-9 were taken out, it's be a true masterpiece.

EDB, Saturday, 6 February 2010 22:21 (fifteen years ago)

just an opinion: lots of great tracks but the selection/mixing is too jarring and unfocused; a lot of it seems like he just took a bunch of his new favorite songs and tried to make a mix out of em..

but this:
It's nothing short of great, but if tracks 3-9 were taken out, it's be a true masterpiece.

that'd be taking out "if i ever feel better" and "rubicon" which are two of the best tracks on there.. i'm sure lots'll rep for "i feel love" and that cornelius rmx if pretty awes too (albeit, totally out of place)

guammls (QE II), Saturday, 6 February 2010 23:51 (fifteen years ago)

eh that was a poor thought out post, delete myself

guammls (QE II), Sunday, 7 February 2010 00:23 (fifteen years ago)

Moka and Tannenbaum Schmidt- In case you missed it, I figured I'd let you know here that I sent you guys an email yesterday re: The Modernist.

lou, Monday, 15 February 2010 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

Lou, yeah I DL'd it earlier today - huge THKS - yet to give it a listen, but looking forward to it. Thks again.

Where did he go?

dollar eye twinkling (admrl), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 14:46 (thirteen years ago)

Erlend? There were Kings of Convenience and Whitest Boy Alive records in 2009...

Ascot Fitzgerald (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 14:49 (thirteen years ago)

What is Whitest Boy like? 2009 was at least three years ago!

dollar eye twinkling (admrl), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 14:50 (thirteen years ago)

there was a kings of convenience album last year iirc

just sayin, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 14:53 (thirteen years ago)

ydrc

Ascot Fitzgerald (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 15:41 (thirteen years ago)

Whitest Boy Alive toured here in January, so, Australia?

Θ ̨Θƪ (sic), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 23:35 (thirteen years ago)

this was a really beautiful thing for a minute or two. and i never think about it at all. it is really locked in amber.

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 23:38 (thirteen years ago)

I was at a very enthusiastic TWBA gig in Seoul around this time last year.

For a few years it seemed like Erlend was doing vocals for all kinds of stuff, but that's a very long time ago now.

djh, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 20:58 (twelve years ago)

two years pass...

I love this album! What are some other albums that sound like this? Is this what they call "microhouse"?

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 1 October 2015 10:37 (nine years ago)

A lot of the second half (from 2 After 909 onwards) is microhouse yes, but as a mix it's so stylistically all-over-the-place that you'd need to say which bits are working particularly well for you.

Matt DC, Thursday, 1 October 2015 11:09 (nine years ago)

Like, what the heck is "So Weit Wie Noch Nie"? That's on Kompakt. I'd love to check out those Total compilations but there's like 20 of them.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 1 October 2015 11:32 (nine years ago)

So Weit Wie Noch Nie is microhouse as well, yes. Totals 3 and 4 are probably the ones you should start with - they were firmly up and running by that point but before the point when they started repeating themselves.

Michael Mayer's two early 00s mix albums (Immer and Fabric 13) are both essential as well.
