Thin Lizzy: Classic or Dud?

My friend Dave made me a mixtape of Thin Lizzy (all of Jailbreak, parts of Fighting, Bad Reputation and Chinatown) in exchange for a tape of Bon Scott-era AC/DC.

I can't believe how awesome Thin Lizzy is. The danceable beats, the DOUBLE lead guitar parts, Phil Lynott's voice...dear god. I need a theme song for when my friends come back to town on vacations and "The Boys Are Back In Town" (which never did anything for me as a radio jam back in the day) is IT. "Cowboy Song" may be the first song I've ever heard about a rodeo and liked. "Sweetheart," "Running Back," "Soul Slips Away," JESUS this is sooooooooo good.

What say you?

Exactly why did this question even need to be asked?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 6 March 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Cuz it hasn't yet! And there's only like 14 posts on the longest Thin Lizzy thread out there. And Robert Christgau gave Jailbreak a B MINUS so you know there's haters out there.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 6 March 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

The ultimate band of the 1970s: Judas Priest meets Steely Dan.

plus as Eddy has said, Van Morrison. plus as I have said, the greatest band of all time.

POX: Thin Lizzy

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 6 March 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

that's just so i don't have to list all my fave songs again.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 6 March 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

not only this, but my kids agree too. I did a dj shift at the great WORT community radio station, my kids got to pick one song each, Emma picked "Jailbreak," they shouted along on the chorus. It's bubblegum folk metal emo Irish blues boogie soul pop r&b rock, and it's sexy.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Saturday, 6 March 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I didn't wanna revive that yet cuz I've only been listening to Thin Lizzy for a day and am not quite ready for a POX. But what a day it's been. The solos have inspired me to practice SCALES on my guitar for the first time ever. They actually make me wish I had chops.

i once heard "The Boys Are Back In Town" being played over a massive pa system during the overthrow of the serbian government while i was watching on cnn. i always thought that was pretty.. cool i guess is the word im looking for..

We must've done this before, surely.

In any event, fuckin' classic, and anyone who suggests otherwise has their head way, way, way up their ass.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 6 March 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm partial to the Eric Bell era. They were just a lot more weirded out back then. The albums have a strange flow to them. They kinda hadn't found their feet yet, hadn't really codified into the classic band everyone knows and loves. But I think I like the sound of the trio format better, there's a bit more space in the music. Their vaunted "dual-guitar" stuff can sound kinda tightly wound. Plus Wishbone Ash did it first anyway. I don't know. I went through a period of just jonesing out on those first three records for like a month last year, so that's probably why I'm saying that now.

The Robertson era is great too, though, don't get me wrong. I like basically everything up through Bad Reputation. Actually, I haven't heard anything after that, so I might like it too! About a month ago though I heard some archival King Biscuit Flower Hour concert on the local classic rock station, from the era with the dude from Whitesnake. It was kinda bad, actually. All arena gestures. Phil sounded tired.

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 6 March 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Question for us Thin Lizzy neophytes: I only have Jailbreak. Where to go next? Boxed set? Any other individual album that's as good as Jailbreak from start to finish?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Saturday, 6 March 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

bah!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 6 March 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I know the album "Bah!" Is that one of MOJO's great lost albums?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Saturday, 6 March 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

It's how Phil Lynott sang "ma"

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 6 March 2004 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

total classic!

scott pl. (scott pl.), Saturday, 6 March 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Josh - get Night Life! It's kind of their transitional album, it's a little laid back. Starts off with "She Knows", which is just a beautiful song. But it also has some cool rockers, like "It's Only Money", which I think was sampled by the Beastie Boys somewhere. Anyway, it's kinda funky. Yeah, that's a great album.

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 6 March 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

In any event, fuckin' classic, and anyone who suggests otherwise has their head way, way, way up their ass...like a certain highly-placed US music mag editor who cited TL as laughably lost'n'forsaken 70s burnouts in my presence a while back."No need to do an update on THEM, hahaha." Words of wisdom from a no-nothing douchebag.
Try "Johnny the Fox VS Jimmy the Weed" it's funky as hell. That's the only great cut missing from the Dedication best-of. All their LPs have good cuts, but Jailbreak is their only filler-free album in my book.
Sadly, I noticed an entity called Thin Lizzy are playing in NYC this spring. Beats playing in a Crue covers band, I guess.

lovebug starski, Saturday, 6 March 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Rob! Man, I remember how many Thin Lizzy LPs HPK had in their library and was always amazed.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Saturday, 6 March 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Sadly, I noticed an entity called Thin Lizzy are playing in NYC this spring. Beats playing in a Crue covers band, I guess.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 6 March 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

One of them was signed!!! I think. If I'm remembering correctly.

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 6 March 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Live & Dangerous sounds great but was widely known as a "doctored" (re-recorded) live album. Lynott's Solo in Soho sounded good at the time (79/80) but I don't know how it would hold up now.

lovebug starski, Saturday, 6 March 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Completely classic.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Saturday, 6 March 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

See, the big misconception that a lot of people who have only heard the radio hits STILL have is that they were just some monolithic boogie/arena rock band to be filed next to Foghat and Bad Company or whoever when nothing could be farther from the truth of course. They were a multi-faceted machine to say the least. (don't shoot if you think bad company and foghat were the bees knees-just needed some quick klassic rock examples)

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 6 March 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still glad the used their double lead guitar facet as often as possible.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 6 March 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

'Live & Dangerous' and 'Johnny The Fox' are the two albums I'd go for and singles-wise you should hear 'The Rocker' and, of course, 'Whiskey In The Jar'

LondonLee (LondonLee), Saturday, 6 March 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I just don't always need Thin Lizzy to "rock", for me, even though they certainly did it quite well. But I've got Sir Lord Baltimore records and Budgie records for that. I guess I just like their mellower stuff, the stuff that really emphasizes Phil's voice, his songwriting, his lyrics, etc. I'll take the ballads on the early stuff ("Honesty is No Excuse", "Remembering", "Sarah", "Little Girl In Bloom", "She Knows") over any of the big rocking radio hits, great as they are.

Damn, I really need to get those Lynott solo albums.

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 6 March 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Sadly, I noticed an entity called Thin Lizzy are playing in NYC this spring.

This is an exception that breaks the rule. Its John Sykes and Scott Gorham's travelling shrine to Phil Lynott. In the past they've also toted along one of the old Lizzy keyboard players, Mark Mendoza and Tommy Aldridge.

And, man, do they smoke for a few dollars. I was a skeptic but the live "Thin Lizzy" album they made a few years ago is very good, altogether superior to the final Lizzy live album and good to hear alongside "Live and Dangerous."

George Smith, Saturday, 6 March 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

When I interviewed Lemmy a couple of months ago, he mentioned them to me, apropos of nothing. He said, "Go see Thin Lizzy if they come around. You wouldn't think they'd be able to do it without Phil, but they're really fuckin' great." So there you go.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Saturday, 6 March 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"Mark Mendoza and Tommy Aldridge." as in "The Animal" of Dictators/Twisted Sister fame and the hack drummer from Pat Travers/Ozzy Ozbourne/Whitesnake? How many keyboard players did Thin Lizzy have anyway? Good for Scott Gorham, who stood by Phil Lynott's side the whole time, but I'm not quite convinced..

lovebug starski, Saturday, 6 March 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Tommy Aldridge drumming for Ted Nugent about three years ago.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Saturday, 6 March 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"You wouldn't think they'd be able to do it without Phil, but they're really fuckin' great."

It's true. The rep on them is really grass-roots.

George Smith, Sunday, 7 March 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

the hack drummer from Pat Travers/Ozzy Ozbourne/Whitesnake?

Don't forget Black Oak Arkansas. "Raunch & Roll."

George Smith, Sunday, 7 March 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, the Phil Lynott album "Solo in Soho" is worth checking out. The Elvis tribute song, Kings Call is probably it's best remembered track.

Alright I don't have it with me but I'm gonna try and do my best here. I know it was all of Jailbreak and songs from Bad Reputation, Fighting and Chinatown (those are the ones he's got). I don't know whether or not he grabbed ALL the winners (from what I've read I'm surprised he didn't include "Rosalie") but I really enjoyed everything on here. He's actually bugging me to make HIM a copy cuz he can't dub tapes and he wants a copy he can play in his walkman. This is good enough that I'm debating buying a new walkman, cuz right now only the radio on it works.

Side One
1. Jailbreak
2. Angel from the Coast
3. Running Back
4. Romeo and the Lonely Girl
5. Warrior
6. The Boys Are Back in Town
7. Fight or Fall
8. Cowboy Song
9. Emerald
10. Killer Without A Cause
11. Dear Lord

Side two
1. Soldier of Fortune
2. Bad Reputation
3. Opium Trail
4. Southbound
5. For Those Who Love to Live
6. Suicide
7. Wild One
8. Fighting My Way Back
9. Spirit Slips Away
10. Sweetheart
11. Sugar Blues
12. Killer on the Loose

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 7 March 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

If I was gonna do a POV on this I'd pick: Boys Are Back In Town, Running Back, Sweetheart, Rodeo Song & Southbound (or Dear Lord...dammit I've had this tape for two days and already POVs are too hard)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 7 March 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

my list from the POX thread would be my mix if i had a mix. it's fairly chronological.

The Friendly Ranger at Clontarf Castle

Black Boys On The Corner
Whiskey In The Jar
Showdown
It's Only Money
Sweet Marie
Suicide
Rosalie

What a performer, musician & poet.Got my Live in 78 Dvd outside of the Sydney Opera house. Those guys new how to rock. Phil ,Gary Moore,Scott Gorham & some dude on drums ( It wasn't Brian Downey) played a concert that would have been so awsome to see live,if only i wasn't 8 at the time.Gay Moore absolutely goes off in " are you ready" if only the quality of the audio on the dvd was a tad better i could puump it up relly loud ....Live on Lizzy, their music still has a meaning!!!

Guess who just got back today? Them cats ... etc etc. You know what is great about this band: they're like the opposite to those jingle-writers, or 40s musical writers, who always scrape to make their lyrics scan ... that guy phil has stupidly complicated lyrics but they scan in this wonderful way, as if they're in a whole seperate song but it's a BETTER song

Metallica bludgeoned all subtly out of that song for me! It's sad....I can't hear it with pure, un-Helfield damaged ears now! They took something from me I will never get back.

Thin Lizzy never lets me down...every time I hear Phil's voice I smile, they rock so hard. Ned -- I'm down with the extended intro on "Whiskey In the Jar"...it's that nuance that you forget between listens, that reminds you why you came back to it. Like a buried treasure. Then again, the keyboards have the same quality

Love the Lizzy!

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 5 December 2009 15:15 (fifteen years ago)

There was a repress of their first album at a record store in STL a few weeks ago. I got excited cuz I never see it anywhere, but it was priced $32.99 and it was already bent up at the corners. No way am I paying that much! So I went back to the used records section and found Bad Reputation for 7.99. It's a better record and I didn't own a copy already. So I won, I guess.

Wow, very unexpected. Saw him a couple of times back in the 80s, but he was in the gated drums and weird stage costumes phase so not that good. Funnily enough Phil Lynott guested at one gig in his last ever public performance, he looked awful.

Was just thinking that the statue of Phil outside Bruxelles in Dublin looked like him in bloated late era.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Phil_Lynott_Statue_at_Bruxelles_Dublin.jpg
A bit like choosing to portray Elvis as he looked in the mid 70s over any other era that could be chosen, '56 or '68 much preferable.

I'm just picking up the remastered reissues.
Still not found out why the Eric Bell era ones got delayed for like 5 years or whatever.Grabbed them as soon as I got the chance when they did appear. Love that stuff.
Less familiar with the later era. Love Jailbreak now I've got it. Will gradually pick up the others over the next while.
Not sure why they skipped 2lps, are they going back to reissue them remastered? Did they just skip from the delayed reissues to the most popular lps, then intend to work on from there including those 2?

Hello:

A treasure trove of tapes stashed away by Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott will be released as a boxed set later this year.

Twenty six years after the Dublin rocker's death at the age of 36, more of his lost music will be heard by the public for the first time in June.

Shortly before he passed away in 1986, Mr Lynott gave 150 tapes to a third party for safekeeping. The cache of up to 700 songs has finally been released to record company Universal Music.

"This is an absolutely stunning find," Steve Hammonds, project manager behind the new Thin Lizzy box set, told the Irish Independent.

"In every group there's a member who lovingly collects their recordings and in Thin Lizzy that was Phil Lynott, because Lizzy was his baby and his band."

It will be the second boxed set in recent times to feature archive work by the band, following last year's 'Live At The BBC' release.

But the newly unearthed recordings stretch from Thin Lizzy's years with Decca Records, beginning in 1971, to their 'Renegade' album in 1981.

"There are out-takes, unheard versions of Thin Lizzy hits and, most exciting of all, material which was recorded but never released at the time," said Mr Hammonds.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 18:46 (thirteen years ago)

That sounds amazing! I still need to hear the BBC box.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 18:52 (thirteen years ago)

"Little Girl in Bloom" is such a jam. it seems lazy to compare that song to the groove of The Unforgettable Fire since both bands are Irish but "Little Girl in Bloom" invents that sound, & I'm guessing Bono et. al. knew it well

jailbreak is as good a starting point as any imo, cause it has some of their (deservedly) best-known songs and the rest of the tracks are as good or better. and it cuts a great balance between muscular hard rock and heart-on-sleeve pub rock. 'fight or fail' has always been a personal favorite of mine.

Hadn't really looked into the later era before the deluxe editions 10 years ago and I still need to pick up a couple.
I have a live set with John du Cann on one of the 2 guitars somewhere not sure he stands out as much as elsewhere.
But band was pretty great for a long time.

And now, for the 50th anniversary of the band’s formation, Universal is embarking on a big reissue campaign to underline the group’s legacy, the first installment of which is a giant box set. The career-spanning compilation features six discs of rarities, demos, radio sessions, and live recordings. Altogether, there’s 74 previously unreleased tracks.

In addition to all the music, there are also a couple DVDs featuring the BBC documentary Bad Reputation and the band’s performance on Rod Stewart’s 1976 TV special A Night On The Town. The set also includes a bunch of book material, spanning everything from reproductions of old tour programs to Phil Lynott’s poetry.

Listening to "She Knows," the Van Morrison influence on Lynott's vocal is pretty charming, especially the brief scat at 2:40. And I really dig the exquisite guitar solos that follow, not to mention those smooth drum fills that punctuate them.

Anyway, great stuff - musically, the record feels like a lovely marriage between Hall & Oates's No Goodbyes and Steely Dan's Katy Lied.

This slipped by too - Thin Lizzy gets a LOT more press in the UK than the US, that's for sure - but here's Record Collector's review for the next box set that's out this week. This part is pretty insane:

"The first in a series of archive releases, Rock Legends will satisfy collectors disappointed with the Warriors, Kings, Vagabonds, Angels (2001) box set’s paucity of rarities. By comparison, this hits the motherlode, with 74 previously unreleased tracks, sourced from an extensive cache of newly recovered master tapes, long rumoured to exist. Nick Sharp, one of the consultants involved in compiling Rock Legends, told RC that the tapes were retrieved when outtakes from Johnny Thunders’ So Alone album appeared on eBay. Knowing of Lynott’s contributions, the seller was contacted and found to be the custodian of the Lizzy tapes. Despite having at one point been stored in the damp confines of a barge on the Manchester Ship Canal, the majority of tapes were salvageable, and the songs chosen for inclusion have been newly mastered."

Maybe it'll be in the booklet but how does a stash of master tapes like that wind up sitting in a barge?

birdistheword, Monday, 26 October 2020 19:55 (four years ago)

This may be the greatest maritime rarities salvage incident since the Grateful Dead's houseboat tapes.
