Good to see a lot of recent stuff... I guess.

Does no one know "Troy"?!

djdee2005, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, I would be remiss if I didn't replace one of those Neptunes tracks with Grindin'.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i just tried to pick stuff i could imagine people rocking over for 30 or 40 minutes without me getting bored

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Who listens to a single hip-hop beat for 30-40 minutes straight?!

djdee2005, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

jamaicans

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

oochie wally is by ez elpee. i don't know anything about him.

William Wiggins, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Right on. No matter how long Ante Up is, it always feels too short.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

No one's mentioned "Come Clean" by Jeru. The forerunner to "Grindin'" really.

djdee2005, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

people at ciphers

Usually the DJ will switch it up before it plays for 30 minutes. Esp. since that means they'd need two copies of the vinyl.

djdee2005, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooooh, Beatnuts - Break Off A Couple is fucking NIIIICE.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

"It's Hot (Some Like it Hot)" is some good Jay-Z.
"No Exit" by Akinyele has some great stuff.
The "I Got Cha Opin (Remix)" is tight too.

djdee2005, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"Off the Books"
"Tables Will Turn"
"Shook Ones, Pt. 2"

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i sort of picked ones that i love to hear people on, beats that i love to hear flows on, and ones that are popular for that purpose, rather than just hot instrumentals.

William Wiggins, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooh, I really like Matt's list a lot.

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"its hot" would be a good choice for a timbo track, since i didn't list one, but "snoop track" is probably a better one (he really saves all his minimal hard beats for jay, or used to). from swizz probably something like "You Could Be Blind". From Dre maybe "Satisfaction"

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Also I like Alex in SF's list a lot.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't believe jess is the only one to mention 'top billin'

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Since I hate "all-time" lists, this is just the "first 5 to mind" list:

Quasimoto - "Axe Puzzles" (Madlib)
Mobb Deep - "Still Shinin'" (Havoc)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

gang starr "dwyck"

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The synth bass in "The F Word" ruins it for me.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

(details: the Ghostface track is some dude named Arthur Wilson making I Can't Believe It's Not RZA goodness -- it flips this really maudlin/smooth slow jam lost-love Eddie Holman track and through the magic of pitchtweaking makes it sound like BLAAAOUW; the Beasties track is a chunk from that monster 12-minute Paul's Boutique final track and it samples this fuckin' great Southside Movement break, thank u dust bros.; the Hova and Luda beats [Timbaland and... Shondrae?] are the best super-up-tempo crunkulous postcoital shiver beats ever; the Can Ox beat is basically El-P playing Gary Numan, Porn Film Scorer, oops is insane and wrong)

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(possibly i am, but it has more to do with my intense dislike for digital bass, esp anything that reminds me of farts)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Incredible Bongo Band - "Apache"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Talib Kweli - "Get By" (Kanye West)
Ludacris - "What's Your Fantasy?" (Shondrae)
Notorious B.I.G. - "Respect" (Trackmasters)
Fabolous - "Can't Deny it" (Rick Rock)
Freeway - "All My Life" (Bink! aka Bink Dog)

Jess I don't know why you always rep for "VA Banger". I like weirdo super-mininal Neptunes too, but that one just sounds like crap.

i dont like my list anymore, but i'm too tired to think of a new one

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Honestly at this moment I'd list at least three Kanye productions. Not only "Came Back" but "B R Right" and "Get By".

Also the G-Unit Anthem and the intro track from the album.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

My fav. Kanye beat would def. be "In Cold Blood" from Scarface's album.

boo!

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

kris kross - jump

There's populism, but this is just preposterous.

Never mind the fact that the same sample is freaked better on "Izzo".

djdee2005, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ante Up"
"Like A Pimp"
"Shine"
"We Need a Resolution"
"Change the Game"
"Oops (Oh My)"

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoops, that was 6

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i like them both but i like jump better. i dont see why jump is preposterous! give me one good reason.

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, you can like anything you want to, but I don't see why the beat is special or deserves to be singled out in any way. Its catchy I guess, but it just seems like there were so many better beats in the same style coming out at the same time that I have a hard time understanding why someone would be passionate about it, unless they had some sort of personal association (Kriss Kross was my first tape, when I was 8 years old, but damn...)

djdee2005, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

jeremy i order you to stop liking what you like

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

dj dee i love it because it makes me happy and want to jump. i bet if you heard it at a party you'd be happy too, it ws your first tape after all! don't hate on kris kross, 8 yr old you was right.

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah the SONG would make me happy. But more because of nostalgia than any sort of inherent quality in the production.

Nothin special about the beat though...

djdee2005, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

thread title says 'favorite', dj.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

'Jump' is brilliant but whatever

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

who the fuck listens to kris kross instrumentals!!! i dont want to seperate the beat from the song

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

jamaicans
people who live in houston
obsessive compulsives
people in ciphers

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha I totally want to go to a party now where nothing is rocked but Kris Kross instrumentals (preferrably with Jamaican's toasting over them and the DJ slowing them down and cutting them up to boot.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Freeway - "All My Life" is fucking evil!! The part where he says "I'm going going back back to Cali Cali" and there's that huge drum roll - then kicks back in with that little "ooh-ooh-ooh" vocal thing in the background. FUCK. Amazing song. Its a shame Bink gets overlooked because of Kanye.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

colin, i think i'msmitten

adam west (adamwest), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

1) dead prez - hip-hop
2) a tribe called quest - award tour
3) bubba sparxxx - twerk a little
4) souls of mischief - '93 til infinity
5) company flow - worker ant uprising

i guess

ryan kuo (ryan kuo), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

word to Badlees! I'm actually listening to that song right now and just freaked out to that drum roll like I always do.

my other favorite Bink beat:

Jay-Z f/ Beanie Sigel, Memphis Bleek and Freeway - "1-900-Hustler"

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

yay for the Souls love

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

thread title says 'favorite', dj.

Um no shit but that doesn't mean that I can't raise an eyebrow when someone drops some pretty bland production.

'Jump' is brilliant but whatever

Lets not go overboard. Its a decent pop song, but seriously, its nothing special. SO much incredible hip-hop from that time goes ignored you have to understand why I'd be somewhat perturbed by someone saying that the beat to "Jump" by Kriss Kross is one of their all-time favorites. Like I said, they have the right to love whatever they love, I'm just saying you don't have to settle.

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Dee, stop being such a cunt. Just because people like things that you don't feel deserve merit doesn't mean you need to devalue their opinions. Considering this is a largely indie rock forum, you can't expect people to canonize their lists with "T.R.O.Y" (which I've always thought is overrated) or with more obscure shit like, I dunno, "Jingle Jangle" by the Legion or "K.I.S.S" by Diamond D. I mean, people are going to like what they like, you know, so stop trying to force your views on people like that, dude, you make hip-hop smarts like you and I look like real assholes.

Hey, didn't you email me once? About Tribe's producers and Sage Francis and stuff?

That said, come back to PhilaFlava's site, the board has people on it and someone was wondering where you went.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Thursday, 18 March 2004 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

haha what the fuck!? I'm not trying to devalue people's opinions! I guess I'm just sorta clashing with this popist perspective on hip-hop, and all these guys who've listen to lots of current hip-hop but haven't heard any of the stuff from the early 90s or consider Rakim the prog-rock of hip-hop. Whats funny is I end up arguing the popist perspective on hip-hop boards!

Anyway, yeah I'll head on over there when I get a chance. I haven't posted in a while. (and Yeah I did email you, about how Tip produced most of tribe's stuff.)

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

(btw, TROY overrated?! bah!)

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

How isn't TROY overrated? Then again, find me a hip-hop DJ who doesn't have 'take sips of the brew' tattooed to their forearm and you'll have found the exception to the rule, for sure. I've always thought it was a really good beat, but you know, everyone loves it while I just like it, I think.

I'm more inclined to think these are people who have heard a lot of new and old stuff, but started with the newer stuff and therefore hold a greater resonance toward it.

I totally agree with arguing the popist/rockist/not trad-rap view on hip hop boards, I tend to do that quite a bit. I was like the only guy who would admit to liking Dizzee Rascal at PhilaFlava and everyone freaked out on me.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Thursday, 18 March 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

TROY ain't overrated (gah i hate the term). Every measure the drums are changed up slightly, a 'trick' that all hip hop producers should take note of.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 March 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean just cause something is well-respected doesn't automatically mean it's overrated. Sometimes it's just rated.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 March 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Joe Beats told me that there were some strong rumors that Large Professor actually sequenced the beat for "TROY" and that he and Pete Rock worked together on it.

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the story was that Marley Marl did the drums? does anyone have any solid info on this?

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 18 March 2004 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

We should do a music that is neither under or overated thread, but is actually accurately rated.

Sym (shmuel), Thursday, 18 March 2004 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Way to kill a thread with "who really produced that" nerdiness, guys.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 March 2004 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Christ rollie i didn't think it was possible to out-rockist dj but you've done it here.

"these indie-rock suckaz don't know the REAL shit" my goddamn ass.

Anyway right now I think that California Love and Going Back to Cali need some love.

Also more great puffy productions need to be listed! bad boys for life, more of his stuff for biggie, etc. Mo Money, Mo Problems

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 18 March 2004 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

here's something that I have to share and can't think of anywhere else...just looking at the back of EPMD's Crossover and noticed they credit the source material to Roger Troutman and David Gamson. Gamson worked with Roger at some point when he wasn't producing all the music for Scritti Politti in it's NY phase or releasing the awesome Sugar, Sugar 12" on Rough Trade. These kinds of connections get me really excited. Gamson had one other pop/electro-funk track called "No Turn on Red" that is only on 2 comps, I think.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 18 March 2004 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

these indie-rock suckaz don't know the REAL shit

didn't you call that slug track a banger?

$corpium ($corpium), Thursday, 18 March 2004 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Christ rollie i didn't think it was possible to out-rockist dj but you've done it here.
"these indie-rock suckaz don't know the REAL shit" my goddamn ass.

Dude wtf you keep saying this shit about me being "rockist" but have yet to produce any evidence of such! And I don't think that claiming a Kriss Kross beat is nothing special counts as "evidence" either.

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"I guess I'm just sorta clashing with this popist perspective on hip-hop, and all these guys who've listen to lots of current hip-hop but haven't heard any of the stuff from the early 90s or consider Rakim the prog-rock of hip-hop."

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 March 2004 05:32 (twenty-two years ago)

How is that rockist? I'm saying that my perspective is different, I'm not claiming my perspective is RIGHT. I'm not saying people HAVE to know early 90s hip hop to have "correct" opinions or something.

"these indie-rock suckaz don't know the REAL shit"

Out of curiosity, where in this thread did Rollie say this?

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

and the "rakim the prog-rock of hip-hop" comment came from a discussion that I had w/ "chuck" on another thread where he claimed that hip-hop fans liked rakim because of his lyrical complexity or something, rather than the fact that we just enjoy his music.

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

"Its a decent pop song, but seriously, its nothing special. SO much incredible hip-hop from that time goes ignored you have to understand why I'd be somewhat perturbed by someone saying that the beat to "Jump" by Kriss Kross is one of their all-time favorites. Like I said, they have the right to love whatever they love, I'm just saying you don't have to settle."

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 March 2004 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently I'm an idiot, because you're going to have to spell out to me what exactly is "rockist" about that.
If I made a post claiming that "God Save the Queen" was the greatest punk song ever, I'm sure a bunch of people would start arguing with me...are they rockists if they said something like "well, I'd recommend hearing The Only Ones and the Clash before saying that..."?

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 05:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, everyone can have their own opinions but it gets to the point where you throw up your hands and say "whats the point of discussing music, everyone has their own opinions."

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

haha oh dear lord

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 18 March 2004 05:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not trying to cause a scene or something here...I'll admit it if I'm wrong, I'd just like someone to break this down for me.

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"If I made a post claiming that "Come Clean" was the greatest rap song ever, I'm sure a bunch of people would start arguing with me...are they rockists if they said something like "well, I'd recommend hearing Group Home and Souls of Mischief before saying that..."?"

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 March 2004 05:52 (twenty-two years ago)

uh the difference being, alex, that the beat to "jump" isn't one that most people associate with being a really dope hip-hop track. Perhaps "God Save the Queen" isn't the correct parallel -
"my favorite punk song is that one by SR-71."

Wouldn't you ask him "Why?!"

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, you wouldn't say he's wrong, but it would kinda make you wonder what punk music he's heard.

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 05:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The guy posted FIVE tracks other than "Jump" on this thread, so I think he's probably HEARD some hip hop (PLUS he posted on this thread to begin with.)

I think you have me confused with Alex in NYC. I wouldn't give a shit.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I meant the rhetorical "you," not neccessarily you in particular.

The reason I brought it up was because it really did seem like a left-field choice. When I talk to most people who've heard hip-hop about some of their favorite production work, I can't think one who would list "Jump." I mean, its a cool song but I just didn't see how it stood out. I'm not trying to be a hard-on here, it just stuck out to me. forget it.

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:05 (twenty-two years ago)

"When I talk to most people who've heard hip-hop about some of their favorite production work, I can't think one who would list "Jump.""

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the story was that Marley Marl did the drums? does anyone have any solid info on this?

It seems like it would be a little bit after Marley Marl's time at this pt...I mean he was doing beats mostly for the Juice crew and the last major album I'm aware of him producing was LL Cool J's comeback record, which still had that 80s production steez going for it really.

"When I talk to most people who've heard hip-hop about some of their favorite production work, I can't think one who would list "Jump.""

I meant to type "a lot of hip hop," not just "hip-hop", so you know, but I fail to see what's rockist about that sentence. I had expectations about what people would post, and he surprised me.

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, give it a rest. I have NEVER heard anyone---personally or in writing---extoll the glory that is the 'Jump' beat. I doubt most anyone else here has either. It's only natural for its mention here to raise an eyebrow or three.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:22 (twenty-two years ago)

And provoke sneers, jeers and general smugness. Yes, completely natural. Sorry. Not rockist at all. Back to business, folks. Anyone got any more beats?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

yep.

Vanilla Ice "Play that Funky Music"
Gerardo "Rico Suave"
Post cereal corp. "Barney's Rap"

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Goddamn if anyone's being smug its you with this trite quoting in an attempt to prove that I'm some sort of authenticity-obsessed rockist. I never claimed that enjoying Kriss Kross deserved "sneers [and] jeers" I was just taken aback by the suggestion that the beat to "jump" stood out in any way.

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Getting back on topic I've always enjoyed the 1-track-jack that was "Can I Live."

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"Post cereal corp. "Barney's Rap""

There's populism, but this is just preposterous.

Never mind the fact that the same sample is freaked better on "Count Chocola's Revenge".

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

haha

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"general smugness."

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I consider this very specific smugness actually.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Whatever. At least now I know better than to raise an eyebrow about anything, ever.

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"Cuz the block got its eyebrows down, YAH HERRD MEH!?"

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

rza - wu tang: 7th chamber pt 2: rza becomes even more sloppy = the best rza beat. check the squalling noise that kicks off ghost's verse

just blaze - what we do (free, jay and beans): the cushiest just blaze beat, best ever use of weird chromatic/phased ascending synth line

dj premiere - gangstarr's "work", because it's, yknow, the beat to "work"

mannie fresh - undisputed by cash money millionaires

havoc - i THINK it's "up north trip," it's the beat with the weird spiralling keyboard loop followed by a mournful guitar bend; i chose it because it was once stuck in my head viciously the first (and to date, last) time i worked on a commercial fishing boat in alaska and we had just transferred to a new district; the one we were in previously was grueling and i was reeling from it mentally, wondering about the next two weeks i would be out and in this alien environment, and just looking around the river we were in, at the houses on the banks with that loop stuck in my head, looking up at the sky with that bent note in my head and feeling relieved yet tired and apprehensive. if not up north trip then a song right before or after it

hj, Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:45 (twenty-two years ago)

"Royalty" by Gang Starr is another one with some pretty awesome production, how one of the samples just does triplets throughout.

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's my current fave 5:
1-900-Hustler
G-Unit
Aunt Dot
Rubber Band Man
Murda Murda

Sym (shmuel), Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)

currently, excluding earlier (and um, I know shit about hip-hop or beats, so...):

BDP - "9mm Goes Bang"
El-P - "Deep Space 9mm"
Ice Cube - "Down For Whatever"
Lauryn Hill - "Doo Wop (That Thing)"
Masta Ace - "Take A Walk"

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 18 March 2004 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 March 2004 07:34 (twenty-two years ago)

(actually, I'd never heard anything by BDP until this week)

Based on zero results in an ILM search, "Super-Hoe" is underrated. (Or under-talked about)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 18 March 2004 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just gonna mention "Super Hoe"! (is that how they spell it?)

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 March 2004 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

On the MP3 I downloaded, yes.

"Scott LaRock is a ho, Scott LaRock is a super-ho!"

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 18 March 2004 08:02 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry dj didn't mean to call you out so much as tease you and call rollie out -- for this line in particular:

"Considering this is a largely indie rock forum, you can't expect people to canonize their lists with "T.R.O.Y" (which
I've always thought is overrated) or with more obscure shit like, I dunno, "Jingle Jangle" by the Legion or "K.I.S.S" by Diamond D.
I mean, people are going to like what they like, you know, so stop trying to force your views on people like that, dude, you make
hip-hop smarts like you and I look like real assholes."

i disagree with you plenty, but you don't *grate* on me like that post or nothing.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 18 March 2004 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

look kids jump really isnt worth getting so worked up about, if youve even listened to a funkmaster flex cd you know jump is a way canonised rap beat anyway, this thread has removed all of my enjoyment of the song and i scrap all of my choices except for left right left anyway because choosing 5 beats in the whole world is insane, the question is do you really even need to dig that deep in the crates to choose 5 amazing rap beats, i think the answer is NO

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Thursday, 18 March 2004 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

all the same could you please stop choosing the same 5 earnest beats as eachother?

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Thursday, 18 March 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i take that back cos my choices were boring too. i just got annoyed!

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Thursday, 18 March 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

swv - right here
juelz santana - monster music
t la rock - breaking bells
david essex - rock on

prima fassy (mwah), Thursday, 18 March 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm being stupid, but what do we mean by 'beat'? Upthread there's talk of synth noises and stuff...

Strachey, Thursday, 18 March 2004 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Sterling, I'd say you're one person who has recontextualized pretty much everything I've said on this board. I don't see why what I'm saying is awful, it's realistic. You wouldn't expect an indie rap board to be mentioning like Slint or My Bloody Valentine, right? I'm not saying that this doesn't happen because in both circles, there are lots of people who know about each genre. But still, I was thinking that might be a simple reason that people haven't been putting up the shit that dj dee has been expecting to see, I guess.

Or are you implying that this board doesn't lean more to indie rock? Cause I agree that it's a big melting pot, but I'm saying if you blindly click, you'll get more indie rock than anything else.

Or was it just the term 'hip hop smarts' that 'grated' on you so much?

You've really got it out for me, Clover. WE COULD BE FRIENDS ONE DAY

I would also like to add "The Sound of the Police" by KRS-One.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Thursday, 18 March 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"hip hop smarts"!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 18 March 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)
