I feel REALLY stupid for believing all the negative reviews I'd read. I should've known, since htey were the same people that rated In The Court Of The Crimson King as the highlight of their discography. It's a mess, but by gum, it's such a wonderful mess. This and live recordings of the mid-70s lineup is probably my favorite KC material around.

Kaplan Brothers - "Nightbird"

WTF is this?! Here's a review of it I found that pretty much describes it perfectly :

Incredibly bizarre album. I personally can't stand it, but it's undeniably strange.

The Kaplan Brothers were a cheesy Chicago area lounge act. For some reason they freaked out in the early '70s and wrote this WAY over the top "meaning of life" concept album with progressive/psychedelic rock arrangements. The deluded vocals are hilarious and it's musically potent, just not at all my kinda sound.

Imagine King Crimson playing a melodramatic but dead-sincere set at the local Howard Johnson's and that'll put you in the ballpark.

Paulina Rubio - Paul-Latina -- which on first listening is good, but FAR from her best (or best Spanish language) album, and not nearly as good as her previous (English) album. (Maybe I'm wrong, though. I was wrong upthread, I think, when I compared Los Lonely Boys to old-school Santana -- really, they're like a whole band based on the NEW-school Santana hit, "Smooth"!! But with better vocals {not quite as stodgy as I thought at first -- the guy kinda reminds me of Hidalgo from Los Lobos when he first started out, and I'm not as annoyed by that as I'd guess; he's quite soulful!} and guitars (by one of three brothers in the band, apparently). And maybe better percussion, too.)

yes

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 1 April 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, well I never!

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 1 April 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

well I think you did, otherwise you wouldn't have asked

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 1 April 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Right! An odd thing to come across in 2004 nonetheless.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 1 April 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Needs a CD reissue - I saw one, 30 copy ltd edition for about $100.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 1 April 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Haven't heard it in years, can't even remember what it sounds like - a bit This Heat p'raps?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 1 April 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

a bit, but also sounds oddly like Magma in places (mostly because of the bass). good record

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 1 April 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember the titles: King Quack, Curly Wall, is that right?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 1 April 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

ghostwriter - long time comin'

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 1 April 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Curly Wall
2. Alien on Sunday
3. King Quack
4. Lights
5. Hoi Hoi Hoi
6. Merchandise
7. Hansten Klork

I have burn of a friend's LP, so not sure how the sides break up.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 1 April 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

As you said, a quick Google search reveals a Metabolist double CD: Hansten Klork/ Goatmanaut (don't know what this is) - yours for $106!

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 1 April 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Goatmanaut was their only other release, an EP, so I think this is just a single CD.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 1 April 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Indeed, further Googling reveals Goatmanaut to be an EP but mentions a cassette-only album - the sort of thing that was all the rage around 1978-81.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 1 April 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually I remember the "Identify" single by Metabolist - it was quite punky, by their standards.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 1 April 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

It's all here, for the three of us who are interested.

excellent spoken word & atmospherics, no tunes. blegvad's writing in top form. begins straightforwardly, but increasingly bizarre arrangements as things proceed. incredible packaging. quality radio.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 11 May 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

M83 - *Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts.* I definitely like them more than Manitoba or Prefuse 73 (or whatever his number is.) I very well might like them more than Four Tet. (I have no clue whatsoever whether those comparisons really have anything to do with these guys, however. I'm not sure where else I'd slot them. The CD cover compares them to Tangerine Dream and Mogwai, neither of whom I have any memory of actually ever hearing, though I'm sure I must have once or twice.)

I'll have to agree with you on all points there. The last song on the album is the best, though I admit this disc and nearly all the other laptopgaze albums from recent years are all pretty much on the same 'eh, okay' level (Fennesz being the positive exception that tests the rule).
