Dave Matthews Band : Name Your Reasons Why They Are So Bad & Hated.

Subthread Taking Sides: Dave Matthews Band Vs Phish

Who would you choose?

Jerry Garcia's Penis, Friday, 30 April 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Both have had Ice Creams named efter them.

I pick phish food rather than Cherry Garcia.

The music, I don't know.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Grilled cheese sandwiches, teva's, birkestocks, patchouli, hairy bushes, hemp necklaces, dirty feet, dirty underarms, hacky sacks, stupid dance moves, endless guitar shit noodling.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

(my earlier was to do with grateful Dead, not DMB who I also don't know the music of, but as far as I know havent had an ice cream named after them.. What would it taste like?)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I would choose Phish over DMB for actually having thoroughly compelling musical moments. Albeit rarely (for every "Theme From the Bottom" there seems to be seventy "Axilla"s).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

It's almost as if some people WANT the random googlers to come here, like so many illiterate locusts

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

One possible reason for why they are so hated: their songs more often than not have totally fucking retarded lyrics. Sometimes, at the concerts, I've looked around and wondered if anyone around me realizes how dumbass it sounds when 30-60,000 people are singing along "DAVID BOWIE! DAVID BOWIE!".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

or "Windowwww windowwww sha la la la la Windowww"

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Phish thoroughly damaged me at a young and impressionable age. I had something of an epiphany while at a concert under the influence of mescalin: They make bad music and have a despicable fanbase. Still, I find them a shred more appealing than the Dave Matthews Band.
I still have flashbacks when I hear "You Enjoy Myself." *Shudders*

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, fuck no.. don't start this....

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

'Sometimes, at the concerts, I've looked around and wondered if anyone around me realizes how dumbass it sounds when 30-60,000 people are singing along "DAVID BOWIE! DAVID BOWIE!".'

What the? As I'm totally Phish-ignorant, could you enlighten me on this?

de, Friday, 30 April 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

They have a song called that, I believe. The entirety of the lyrics are 'David Bowie, UB40.' I wish I didn't know that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i say all this because I liked Phish at one time and fucked some hot hippie chicks in college. None of them had dirty feet or hairy armpits thought. But the earth mama bush made up for it.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I still like a lot of Phish's music, to be perfectly honest. In particular their albums Rift and Billy Breathes, which seemed to be the only moments they took themselves seriously before they started taking themselves too seriously.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

and before the bass player took nude pictures of kids.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

what the fuck is wrong with grilled cheese sandwiches?!?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

nothing, but they sell them at phish concerts and they are filled with beads and patchouli cheese.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

ewww, I just like mine with tomato, thanks.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

for every "Theme From the Bottom" there seems to be seventy "Axilla"s

b-but Axilla is better than TFTB! i mean, you have to be in the mood for annoying, but at least it's memorable.

anyway, Phish

They have a song called that, I believe. The entirety of the lyrics are 'David Bowie, UB40.' I wish I didn't know that.

*grin*

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I was never a good Phish fan though. Like, I don't know the names of most of their songs or nothing (meanwhile, dude next to me is notating every moment of their set on a notepad, lame-O). Like, if I had to do a POX, it would be like this:

1. that one where Page does that piano solo outro
2. that one with the fucked up time signature
3. whichever cover song Fishman breaks out the vacuum cleaner on
4. the one with the pretty vocal harmonies
5. that other one with the fucked up time signature
6. the bluegrassy one about the aliens shooting a cow with a laser
7. the one Alison Krauss sings with them on the album
8. the one that's a take-off on the NPR All Things Considered theme
9. the one where Fishman just GOES OFF
10.You Enjoy Myself

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

People dancing at Phish shows dance exactly like people at raves only lazier.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

some of us are not lazy in our dancing

meanwhile, dude next to me is notating every moment of their set on a notepad, lame-O

*cries*

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

how many times were you introduced to another band solely because phish segued into a cover that you didn't recognize and felt left out

common_person (common_person), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

also, I assume we are speaking of "Axilla, Pt. 2" rather than "Axilla" < /comic-book-store-guy>

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha actually I was gabb!

I've never heard Phish cover anything remotely obscure. The closest is probably "Peaches En Regalia", which I guess I might have never heard had my daddy not raised me in a house chock full of Zappa.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

this is a hate thread! HIPPIES! Hahaha :)

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

What would it taste like?)

Xgau called DMB "blander than a tofu sandwich"

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

see i listened to them in high school when all i knew was alternative radio and throbbing industrial. so they introduced me to the the talking heads(!), velvet underground(!!!), others. ironic, no?

xpost

common_person (common_person), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Phish is a gateway drug.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Phish = pot
talking heads = xanax
velvet underground = heroin

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Phish leads to Talking Heads. Talking Heads leads to Parliament-Funkadelic. Parliament-Funkadelic leads to Dr. Dre. And Dr. Dre leads to THE DARK SIDE.

Yoda (nickalicious), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Phish = skunk weed
Dr. Dre = the chronic

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

anyway, why are they so bad and hated? well, an adoring audience for one thing. weaned on '70s/early '80s classic rock for another. the absence of any explicit darkness or pretension to authenticity for a third and fourth. essentially, they are Britney for hippies.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Phish food ice cream = yum yum. Phish music (taps head) none of it in there!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Most people hate them because of their audience I do believe. Not so much for how much their audience adores them (although that is OTM), but because most people see their fanbase as consisting mostly of trustafarian burnout dumbasses, which is often (though not always) the case.

In fact, it seems like the Phish hate is connected to the "phan" hate which seems to come from a widespread hatred of all things "hippy", and not as often having anything to do with their (often tedious yet also occasionally enthralling) music.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

For me, Phish are just boring. Less boring than a lot of hippie music, but boring none the less. Shoot, there's a lot of music I like going to sleep to. But this isn't sleepy boring, it's more of a "yay, 35 more minutes of guitar noodling and maybe an acapella version of Freebird" while wishing Cheap Trick would decend from above making crude gestures and procede to kick the shit out of them (except Bun E., he'd just be smoking his cigarette waiting for his drumset to be vacated) and play "Auf Weidersehen" and giving me my refill of faith in Rock & Roll that I so desperately need.

I have a lot of Bonaroo-attending type friends, mostly from a period of college from which I remember little, who dig them, collect bootlegs, talk about who did what when, and such. Also have some friends who were "band types" who like them and argue in favor of their musicianship. But I just never could get into it.

I even dig Bela Fleck, so I'd rather hear the Flecktones but I think that a lot of that is I dig Victor Wooten and Futureman. Anybody with the balls to stand up in front of a bunch of hippies and work the electronic percussion voodoo I've seen him do deserves props.

The only thing I think I like less than DMB and Phish that really pretends to be music (so new country, boy bands, etc. aside) is bad trance music. If I have to be on drugs to "appreciate it", then it's shit in my mind.

And last, but not least I think the reason I moved from not caring/disliking to hating them is the number of times I've entered this situation: I have friend X who's cool but not into music (or I'm trying to get with). They introduce me to their friend Y who friend X says is into music also and that "we would get along". I ask "what kind of music are you into?" or something like that trying to start idle chit chat. Y says "Phish and ....". Now I have to be nice while they talk to me about Phish. I always fuck this up. See, Y doesn't care if I like Phish, he just wants to talk about them, so I'm stuck cutting him off. The longer I wait, the more of an ass I act like. The earlier I do it the more impatient, snobby, etc. I seem. Hippies are way to sensitive and X always worries about them because they're sensative and don't get out enough (sit around and smoke pot all day). Fucking Phish fans,

Mike Salmo (salmo), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i couldn't bring myself to hate the phans i knew in college because they were friendly enough and good sources for drugs. also they were probably not typical of phish fans b/c they were in college (taking it seriously too, and not frat boys/sorority girls either) but certainly i wasn't going to talk music with them...have fun at your disco biscuits show, and thanks for the weed!

common_person (common_person), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

jody's story to thread.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a lot of Bonaroo-attending type friends, mostly from a period of college from which I remember little, who dig them, collect bootlegs, talk about who did what when, and such. Also have some friends who were "band types" who like them and argue in favor of their musicianship. But I just never could get into it.

well it's fun as baseball-stat stuff, but this sort of community does tend to reduce one's field of vision (though it educated me a bit re other, older artists in college) and reinforce your tendency to kid yourself about quality.

The only thing I think I like less than DMB and Phish that really pretends to be music (so new country, boy bands, etc. aside) is bad trance music. If I have to be on drugs to "appreciate it", then it's shit in my mind.

you might enjoy your life more if you admitted to yourself that new country, boy bands, etc. can be good. trance does suck, though, says i the dance music ignoramus.

also thinking future man is somehow not a hippie - haha

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Phish don't bother me quite as much as the DMB (though their fans -- oh, excuse me -- phans -- are just as bad).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't their bass player get beaten up by a buncha Hell's Angels for takin' nudie pics of a six-year old? That story brightened up my day.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh and as for the "hippie" thing. I don't know a single "hippie" who isn't an SUV driving trust fund burnout. They're not light, free, and having fun; they're dull, depressing, boring, and usually jonesin' somethin' aweful. I liked them in college 'cause I was f'd up, they were f'd up, all was good. But closer and closer to graduation they became trolls or something. And a few years later they're still all in their little caves with only two topics of discussion left: inflation in the drug market and Phish.

Mike Salmo (salmo), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

also thinking future man is somehow not a hippie - haha
You have been duped my friend. You probably feel that P-Funk are part of the hippie culture because they "jam out" their songs. But alas, it is mearly Chocolate City invading the Vanilla suburbs. But it's all OK with me. We will all be assimilated.

Mike Salmo (salmo), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

you know, because hippie has a real definition

common_person (common_person), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

You have been duped my friend. You probably feel that P-Funk are part of the hippie culture because they "jam out" their songs.

yes dude, you know me well. i am utterly unfamiliar with George Clinton's anal-stage critique of late capitalism and technophilia.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I am a pop-ist and enjoy Phish's radio hit, "Down With Disease." The rest I can live without (though I remember hearing Junta and thinking it was ok).

All the Phish fans I know are either frat boys/sorority girls or stinking hippie types--there's really not a lot of difference besides frequency and quality of grooming.

adam (adam), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never heard Phish, don't want to, and I wish they didn't get discussed here so much.

bimble (bimble), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

now that, i don't understand. how is that different from the dirty hippie who refuses to listen to anything but phish

common_person (common_person), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

P-Funk are definitely not part of the 'hippie culture'. (neither are Phish)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably because of the knee-jerk anti-musicianship, anti-hippie stance among most (or at least many) ILXers. Either that or because they really really suck. I've never listened to them for more than 30 seconds at a time, so I'm really not the one to say.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 30 April 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The thing I like about their improvisations is that, unlike almost every other "jam band" around today, they aren't group improvisers but group improvisers. Where at a Widespread Panic show or a Gov't Mule show or a Black Banana Deepthroat show or whatever, 20+ minute "jams" = 20+ minutes of guitar noodling, Phish generally improvises as one whole unit. If anybody in the band is noodly, it's their bassist.

(And by the way, it was confirmed on all sides that Mike Gordon never took nekkid pictures of that kid or did anything at all inappropriate, he was just being friendly and taking a 6-year-old child whose parents were off getting high somewhere for a ride on his probably-seeming-really-cool-to-a-6-year-old Segway scooter. He did however get the shit beat out of him by some Hell's Angels. He also recorded a really good duo album with Leo Kottke. And has the most retarded hairdo ever.)

Phish lots are little DIY capitalist microcosms.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 30 April 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I making the following thing up? apparently there was an interview with Trey What-His-Name in which he named his fave guitarist of all time-that't right, Kevin Shields. Cue hordes of fat-ass hippie dudes in my rekkid store asking where they could find the work of said Shields, looking at the cover of "Loveless" and cringing

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 30 April 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha that totally would not surprise me whatsoever

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 30 April 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Forgive me for not caring about the actual topic of this thread; but to return to mark g's initial comment for a moment, isn't B&J's "One Sweet Whirled" Ice Cream named after a DMB song?

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Friday, 30 April 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. I have worked with people who normally hate ice cream but will make an exception for this tripe. Though I guess I would totally eat Chunky Tempo House Swirl

Dude, the cover is a GUITAR. What the fuck were they worried about?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 April 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The tires are the things on your car
That make contact with the road
The car is the thing on the road
That takes you back to your abode

The tires are the things on your car
That make contact with the road
Bummed is what you are
When you go out to your car and it's been towed

I woke up one morning in November
And I realized I love you
It's not your headlights in front
Your tailpipe, or the skylight above you
It's the way you cling to the road
When the wind tries to shove you
I'd never go riding away
And come back home without you

Also: Jonathan Frakes on trombone
Also: GAMEHENGE (oink)
In addition: "Five pounds / six pounds / seven pounds"

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 30 April 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost Ned but it's a SCARY guitar...or something

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 30 April 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, wait, I'm sublimating:

Imagine, if you will, spending a weekend in Vermont with a bunch of friends at a quaint cozy li'l summer home a friend's mom owns, only to have 2 of said friends get ripped on Schlitz, throw on _A Picture of Nectar_ at 3 AM, crank up the volume so fucking Nova Scotia can hear those gnarly Trey leads, and bang on someone's bedroom door, screaming "LLAMAS TO BOOT TO BOOT" like retarded Teddy Ruxpins.

Said bullshit was made slightly more tolerable, however, when one of the two friends decided to try a bowl of Fruity Pebbles w/ Schlitz instead of milk. Hilarity ensued. Oh, the hilarity.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 30 April 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

hey american dudes

this shit that gets peddled to you as 'trance', 'dance' whatever, it's not the shit at all.

dance music grew originally and continues to thrive in the underground. all this talk of 'the great crash of 2003' means just the date when shiteass BAD commercial dance music finally got it's dues. Gravy trains had been ridden by very untalented ppl for a long long time.

Dance music is not dead, just as Rock was not dead when they originally claimed it was. it's still newborn and fresh and innovative (in theory) it will RESSURECT. honest. while ur waiting 4 the 2nd coming check out 'Remedy' by Basement Jaxx, as proper write home mind-blowing dance music albums go this is a stand-up fucking classic.

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 30 April 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

A hippie chick was dancing next to me in row ZZ of GreatWoods (now the Tweeter Center or some crap) the one & only time I saw Phish HERE NOW LIVE! Her limbs thwapped me like whale fins, and she stank like gym socks soaked in brine. Urge to kill rose, but subsided.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 30 April 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i have no hatred for this band whatsover. All the stuff I've heard (which isn't much) sounds okay. I'm sure there's one or two killer bootlegs out there (like the Dead's Skullfuck) that would knock me on my ass if i gave it a chance (which I probably won't)

the connotation, though, I agree, is too much to bear.

Light years better than Dave "let's shut down independent record stores" Matthews, the gross fratboy king

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 30 April 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's the ice cream thread.

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Friday, 30 April 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, I quite like "Billy Breathes" but Phish has been ruined for me by a Phishead college roommate who would bump Phish 24/7. Let's just say I've heard about 40 different live versions of "Llama."

My other roommate was into pre-Stankonia Southern hip-hop, though, so it all balanced out.

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Friday, 30 April 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

haha those look kind of like David Byrne lyrics up there.

"You Enjoy Myself" is nice. It's the only Phish I've heard. Is their other stuff similar? Are they anything like any of these bands: Medeski, Martin & Wood; Metalwood; Charlie Hunter; Nero; Allman Brothers Band; Funkadelic; Weather Report; Rez Abbasi Trio; Rush when they're doing instrumental fusion tracks; Earthworks? If they're anything like any of those things I'd probably really like them.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 30 April 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, you probably will.

their singing
their lyrics
their noodling
their fans

oops (Oops), Friday, 30 April 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Sundar - they are recommended to you. You should start with Junta or Lawnboy, of the studio records. Slip Stitch and Pass, a live disc, maybe holds up the best but might be less your speed. Hoist is the entry point for a popist.

Some are more marginal than others, but I like all of the albums up until Billy Breathes (their attempt to make the Phish version of American Beauty or Workingman's, which is a pretty silly endeavor to begin with), and none of the studio ones that followed. I mean, BB is not terrible, but the only there there is Steve Lillywhite's production, which is better on Dave Matthews' first studio full-length.

Am I making the following thing up? apparently there was an interview with Trey What-His-Name in which he named his fave guitarist of all time-that't right, Kevin Shields.

you're not making it up

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 30 April 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Trey is very enthusiastic, and a big guitar and music (and eclecticism, duh) guy, but i'm not sure that was a totally unself-conscious namedrop. he also likes Pavement.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 30 April 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

pavement attracts hippies too for some reason.

i hate phish because when I was in college I worked for a document processing/scanning service and before we had an actual office we worked out of people's homes, and the girl whose place I worked out would throw on whatever fucking Phish album it was that had just come out (this was around 94) and it annoyed the shit out of me, so whenever she'd leave I'd put in Red House Painters or something and she'd come back and take it out and put fucking Phish back in and accost me with that fucking barbershop-sounding bullshit. This girl also broke her hymen with a cucumber when she was 13, or so she told all of us one night while drunk and particularly pathetic.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 30 April 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

so everyone has hated on the fans, but not one substantive critique thus far of the music (except oops, but i think we knew about long solos already).

isn't B&J's "One Sweet Whirled" Ice Cream named after a DMB song?

yes

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 30 April 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Phish about 10 years ago, supporting the Violent Femmes in London, and it remains the single most horrible live performance I've ever seen, worse even than Pearl Jam or Goldblade. Here's what I hated about it, fair or unfair :

- they sounded like a cross between Supertramp, Yes and Barenaked Ladies.
- they looked like chunky, mainstream guys wearing bad jumpers.
- they smirked at each other whenever someone played a particularly hot "lick".

That's all I can remember, but I'm sure there were many more things they did that night that made me loathe them. Luckily this jam band thing is totally an American phenomenon so I don't have to come across it too often. Noodling and humour is a bad, bad combination.
- the audience loved every minute of it. They danced badly and whooped a lot, even though many of them were British.
- for one song, the guitarist and bassist bounced on trampolines.
- for another song, they lay down and made semaphore signs with their feet.
- for yet another song the drummer pretended to hoover the stage. Someone mentioned this upthread so I guess they always do it. Again, the audience loved all these "humerous moments".

I quite like "Farmhouse" too, actually. I'm surprised how much of their studio output I like. I think Phish fans just have a tendency to play live tracks way, way too much.

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Friday, 30 April 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I signed out Slip, Stitch, and Pass. I like the instrumental section in "Mike's Song" and "Taste" is OK. But I dislike much of the rest. (I'll admit I skipped through particularly frustrating songs.) Do they have albums which emphasize the instrumental psych/prog/fusion elements and which maybe have tighter, more elaborate playing/writing? I didn't like the jam in "Wolfman's Brother", which just reminded me of the Dave Matthews Band. What album is "You Enjoy Myself" on?

For good measure I also signed out American Beauty, Anthem of the Sun, and Live Dead.

This is why I recommended Junta (which has YEM) and not SlipStitch.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 30 April 2004 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

as background - while the change was not a dramatic one, their songwriting and improv styles have moved in a progressively (haha) less proggy direction throughout their career, but in particular during and after 96, when their writing started to lean toward more traditional songform and their live playing became lazier/groovier/funkier (if you will). SlipStitch is from 97.

songs you would probably like, in rough order of preference: Divided Sky, David Bowie, Rift, It's Ice, The Squirming Coil, Guyute, Foam, Reba (possibly my favorite; the second half outweighing the first), Punch You in the Eye, Harry Hood (many regard this as their favorite song, the Phish "Scarlet Begonias"), Stash, Mound, Colonel Forbin's Ascent->Famous Mockingbird, Maze, The Curtain, McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters, Glide, Theme From the Bottom, All Things Reconsidered,

other songs you might like (ok, this is most of them, minus the rock 'n roll/funk songs): Bouncing Around the Room, Camel Walk, Cars Trucks Buses, Cavern, Fast Enough For You, Fluffhead, Harpua, Horn, Llama, The Mango Song, My Friend My Friend, NICU, Run Like An Antelope, Silent in the Morning, Tela, The Oh Kee Pa Ceremony, The Wedge

Cue hordes of fat-ass hippie dudes in my rekkid store asking where they could find the work of said Shields, looking at the cover of "Loveless" and cringing

Five bucks says Phish will cover Loveless at the next whatever-they-call-it where they play an entire album from start to finish. The vacuum cleaner will obviously be used on "When You Sleep" and "Soon" will be 20 minutes of chicken-scratch guitar.

You're right about the Ozric Tentacles, sort of, but they and their ilk haven't made anywhere near the same inroads into the mainstream as Phish. The crusty wars of the early 90s threatened it, but it never came to pass - you could conceivably be a dilletantish and obsessive music fan and never hear an Ozrics record in your life

Not a fan (I've even tried -- a fanatical friend foisted assorted live cassettes on me, including the entirety of the Gamehenge cycle). All the complaints about their music are pretty much on point. But I've never understand the hate either, the whole "smelly dirty hippies" thing -- sounds too much like what Rush Limbaugh listeners say about anti-war protesters. They've created their little universe, and while I don't choose to visit much less live there, I don't see anything harmful about it. I think their business model, which mostly bypasses the standard corporate music structure, is pretty interesting and encouraging. And most of the Phish fans I know are perfectly lovely (and well bathed) people.

PHISH about to break up

rad, Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
You indie kids have your panties all in a bunch, Christ.

Phish is really quite good if you give 'em a shot. Beyond the epics (Divided Sky, Reba, Split Open and Melt, David Bowie, Fluffhead, Maze, You Enjoy Myself, etc etc etc), their song catalogue can be fairly dismal. But that's not what Phish is about.

Phish is all about tension and release, building on horrible-sounding themes and blowing them to shreds in one giant Trey-led climax. The kind of climax that makes you want to pull out all your pubes and staple them to your forehead in a sacrifice to the gods. The kind that keeps building and building until you shit out your intestines and spend the rest of the show trying to shove them back down your throat.

God those were some nasty analogies. But that's the kind of power they have the ability to channel. They're not anywhere in the same realm as the crap 'jam' scene. They transcend it in a million ways, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise (Dood, the String Cheese Incident is so heady, brah).

I will never have a music epiphany like I did at a Phish show ever again. I know their songs can suck. I know their fans can suck. I know their lyrics suck in general.

But show me another band that does THAT. Fucking zen.

I'm still trying to remove the staples from my forehead.

Phish reminds me of smoking. You're first cigarrette is not too enjoyable. Then they get better from there. Over time you get used to it and don't realize how shite they are. Somewhere in here you might get addicted and not realize it. On the other hand you may realize it. Eventually though, you ween yourself away from it if you're smart. Otherwise you have a decent chance that its cancerous plague will pull you under.

Rock Bastard, Sunday, 25 July 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, here's my phish story-
my grrlfriend, she had a huge thing fer phish. so much so that when they came around to play the fuckin hugest venue in town, she and her friends would religiously go see them. so, finally she wanted me to come. i said, thanks but no thanks. i went to a dead show and traded that for a sheet. best deal i ever made. i don't think that can happen again though.
so, she bought me the ticket, no strings. said she'd drive to and fro. i relented, didn't even need to take off work. twas my grrlfriend and 4 of her phishy friends and myself. i was immediately odd man in the parking lot. not only did i get evil stares (i presume for not looking 'hippy' enough, perhaps for being a NARC{which i ain't}) but the beer was over priced, the drugs were over priced, the food was ok, but overpriced. i got hugged by FUCKIN STRANGERS!!! there is little worse than being hugged by some E-tard stank ass hippy saying 'oh, man, yr so beautful...you want some ______?'
i DID however, get some free liquor from some hippy grrl types. i must've had my "oh my fuckin gawd! what have i gotten myself into?!" face on.

flashforward- music time. after funneling into the nice place, we took a lawn seat, i went and guzzeled 4 yuenglings in 10 minutes,at 5 bones a pop i wanted maximum impact. oddly, over the PA system was SCOTS. i was pleasantly suprised by that. but, i seemed to be the only one, so...back to the lawn.

phish came on and the crowd of course twirled like crazy, the air began to stink even worse and i was in hell. until they played 'gold sounds' and i lept up and watch the entire place stop moving as they had no idea what the song was. i did a little jig as i sang badly. that was the 4 minutes i enjoyed, beyond the alcohol.

what a fuckin waste.
even the grrl said it was underwhelming.
next time they came, similar situation, no pavement cover. i fell asleep. easily. without booze, even!

moral- phish=lame. not as bad as DMB, not nearly.

this thread is hilarious as a phish fan...95% of the criticism is totally superficial and unfounded. The other 5% i can appreciate and agree to disagree. by the way, DAVID BOWIE contains some of the most complex composed guitar work in phish's repetoire, the lyric sections are nothing more than transitionary between the focused on instrumental sections.

to those who actually saw shows and knock things like the tramps, vacuums and other humorous aspects....i can just see you standing at a SHOW which you paid to see for crossing yoru arms and refusing to have a good time...get over yourself.

Lee, Sunday, 25 July 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I am immediately suspicious of any band that regards its rhythm section as a backdrop for endless noodling, so I don't care for Phish or DMB (save "Two-Step", which I quite enjoy). The same goes for prog stuff like Dream Theater, which says nothing to me beyond "I Can Play, Hear Me Play, Listen To Me Play This Complicated Lick".

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Sunday, 25 July 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

You guys really dont know what you are talking about. The VAST majority of Phish fans are not sweaty non-showering hippies. They are working in corporate America in every capacity. Generally speaking, they are well off, well educated individuals who, for one reason or another, have formed a bond with this particular type of music, and there is nothing wrong with that. What YOU dont get the "endless guitar noodling" is really quite simple:

You are missing the whole point of "jam" music. To put it bluntly, they are ALL endlessly noodling. Its the type of fan that likes this type of music that listens to EVERY band member, and not just the guitar. They are ALL noodling, and what makes it amazing is that they are all doing their own thing, but still staying on the same page.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 July 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Sweeping generalizations about phish fans just don't work, the fan base is MUCH more diverse than anyone here could imagine. there is a stereotype of a smelly hippy, especially since everytime phish is documented in any way, this is what they focus on. they're there, but don't constitute any sort of majority. Caspians comment is not meant to impress anybody, but to dispell the ridiculous generalizations people make about the fanbase. it won't work as people will believe what they want to believe and focus on what they believe whenever the subject comes up, but it's simply not reality.

i was once on board with those who don't like phish but i discovered in the past couple years how dead wrong every notion i had about it was. you have no idea what you're hearing when you listen to phish because you listen to it based on your own experience and expectations of music as is the natural thing to do (why do you think some foreign music sounds very strange to you). I had to change the way I listen to music to really 'get it'. now everything i used to listen to (90's alternative generally speaking) just sounds bland...there are details within phish's music not readily apparent to the untrained ear. unfortunately i can't convey these in any simple terms so i won't try but only say this: don't knock what you don't understand.

this is mostly in response to lee and to some similar comments ive read on these google-baiting threads.

the thing i dont understand (and i used to like phish a lot in high school, i went to a bunch of shows, i wasnt even on drugs, for chrissakes...) is how this idea of "phish, in contrast to all the other music in the world, which is totally imperfect and criticizable, is not something that you can discuss at all objectively. if you dont love it subjectively, you just dont get it, and theres something magical that happens, and it cant be quantified, etc etc etc." its really like people have been brainwashed into this blind acceptance of the experience and music without their critical thinking skills, which the well-educated "phans" should, by all rights, have in spades. i feel like really really hardcore phish phan-dom can beget this horrible brand escapism that is harmful in its insularity and its lack of critical examination of music...

maybe thats overstating it a lot, i dont know... i also know that indie/electronic/experimental/etc. fan-dom can engender similar insularity, but i never hear the sort of rapturous praise heaped on a single band by their fans than i do with phish.

btw, i still like billy breathes.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I am immediately suspicious of any band that regards its rhythm section as a backdrop for endless noodling...

The thing is, Fishman and Mike are the two most noodly players in the band. %60 of their jams, Trey is just sustaining a couple notes indefinately while they flounce all over the place. Fishman actually is one of my favoritest drummers live, but Mike honestly is one of my least favorite bassists I've ever witnessed. His tone is way too plucky and muffledy, and it seems like he never has and never will understand the concept of "the pocket".

I listen to virtually no indie bands---now or in the past---and yet still think Phish are wretched. And yes, I am able to pay attention to more than just the lead guitar in a piece of music. Remarkable, I know. The condescension in Lee's posts is also remarkable.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

a good point peter and very true for many types of music. I certainly fell into it in phish but do realize that it can be criticized along with everything else on the planet. my post was a response to the general superficial nature of most of the arguments on here, so i was fairly blunt. If it came off condescending (which I can see now reading it again) I apologize. I'm more than open to discussion but that's not what I saw, and that's what I was responding to.

generally speaking in discussions like this (just look at the main topic of the thread), intelligent discussion is not permitted and anything along those lines is viewed as condescending. damned if you do, damned if you don't.

lee, Wednesday, 28 July 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Keep in mind, Lee, that the thread actually is inspired by/a parody of a similarly titled thread here about the Dave Matthews Band, with even more fiendish results from random googlers causing mirth (and explaining some of my own dismissive comments above). At base, while we all have many conflicting opinions about what music we like here, there's a general sense of tolerance and acceptance of differing opinions, though sometimes hard to see. Sure, plenty of us are flippant about 'hippie jam crap' etc. or whatever, but as you note, going on about 'untrained ears' and the like isn't much better. Roll with the punches, check out the other threads, and stick around if you'd like.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

as far as noodling goes, it's an easy term to apply to free improv that you don't like, i see this word pop up anytime someone doesn't like improv music. generally this noodling you refer to in phish has a purpose and is simply going somewhere very slowly and you may not even realize it until you get there. Also theres a tension & release type effect, in that it will fit into the overall jam or even the overall show making other portions stand out more than they would on their own; all the while, if taken on its own its just 'noodling'.

If it doesn't have a purpose, doesn't go somewhere, or fit into a bigger picture in the right way, the first people that will admit are the people at the show. In fact sometimes they're too overcritical of this.

people will hear this noodling section, decide its crap, and turn their ears off basically even if the music continues but they lose the effect and have no chance of enjoying anything that follows. i've seen it a hundred times. this is one of the details i was referring to earlier. one of the biggest reasons for the 'get it'/'don't get it' factor.

Lee, Wednesday, 28 July 2004 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

well, that's an area we'll have to agree to disagree on ned..'untrained ears' is exactly what it is, even for bands you already like. New albums often have to 'grow' on you; this is what i'm referring to. With phish it usually takes a very very long time with the way our ears are trained to hear most american music...it literally took my friend 2 years of persistance to convince me it wasn't dogshit which i firmly believed.

Not to say its for everyone, but that's typically how it works for those who listen to phish, it wasn't a 'hey this is great' first time round. that's why we tend to get defensive because we see ourselves in the trivialized arguments ;)

lee, Wednesday, 28 July 2004 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Think of it this way -- you'll get people a lot less het up if you said "unfamiliar ears," for instance.

Phish, sigh. I listened to Phish for several years in my young days and I still think there are some decent songs on Nectar and Lawn Boy. I have a couple tapes like the 'White Album' show (which is pretty bad in my opinion), and some others and been to a handful of shows. So anyway, I think I know what I am talking about when I say Phish improvisations are boring and rote. The musicianship is great, but the reason people call it noodling is because it doesn't go anywhere half the time. You can say that people who feel this way 'don't get it' or aren't patient enough or are not looking at the context, but I think I get it fine, thank ya. The harmonic web is pretty basic as compared to someone like Cecil Taylor for instance; it's like listening to a straight line as opposed to listening to a 3-D box. Phish perhaps (but the Grateful Dead more so) turned me into a better listener early on, to be able to wait for and appreciate those moments in improvisation where everything meshes. The thing that sort of disappoints me about Phish is that they've had some fine moments but I think rested on their laurels. They obviously have vast influences and interests that just didn't advance their music in any coherent or exciting way.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

It all comes down to me not liking their aesthetic, their vibe. And judging from the hatred they seem to engender, a lot of other people don't like it either. However, there is a (relatively) small group of people who LOVE their aesthetic. Likewise, many people do not care for, say, the look of long grungy hair, flannel shirts, and Birkenstock sandals while a small percentage of the population LOVES it. One can try to logically explain exactly what it is about that look that they find so unappealing, but it just comes down to aesthetics.
